Lockers would be great for day trippers to use who come in by train. I think it would also help to increase the numbers of tourists per day. No need for parking spaces for these folks either. I really think when Asbury Park starts to build more hotels in the future that they ought to promote coming in by train and leaving your car at home. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: NYT
I remember someone suggested it be named The Titania. I believe this was the title created and given by James A. Bradley himself for the winner of the annual pageant held at one time in Asbury Park. Princess of Titania was the winners title. I think The Titania was a great idea in that it had a historical connection to the city and its founder. As a side note I didn't like the MM websites use of Bradley in that way either. In addition, the fuse noise in the beginning almost gave me a heart attack. Mr. Geibel said the project would be given a new name its third. A contest among Asbury Park schoolchildren produced the name Esperanza. It was a great name, Mr. Geibel said, but this is going to be a different building, a building that will fit the market, and the times. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Senior Center at Atkins and Springwood
I just read at Restoreradio.com that this is the new location the city has decided to put the senior center. I still think a location closer to the beach and downtown is much better. I have suggested before that the property directly west of the library is ideal, a senior/community center. The seniors could then go to the library, stroll in the park, get something to eat on Cookman or wander down to the boardwalk. It's a great centralized location to maximize exercizing the brain and the body. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Mallina's December 20th Coaster Article Posted at asburypark.net
There is a lot to comment on, but just like her other articles, she tends to leave out a great deal when it suits her. I like how the piece is ment to jab at Keady for the most part, but she easily forgets to mention the other unnamed council member(Loffredo)she disagrees with. Also, she goes on to criticize some of Keady's campaign contributors because they are the old Asbury Park power brokers according to her, yet she avoids the fact that ten of thousands of dollars to the Sanders, Bruno, Loffredo and Johnson ticket came from New York. Those donations more reflect outside influences. Yahoo! Great Post Traderdube. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, traderdube [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Gives you many minutes to ponder. RE: AP needs money: All the ideas presented were execellent. Here is one that, because of the new people in the building dept., is underway. It is, become much, much, much more developer friendly. When we undertook the makeover of the 300 block of 4th Ave, possibly the worst block in the city, the city cost us at least 12 months. Between fighting for permits, getting harassed by zoning, and zero help from anyone in city hall, 2 condo projects that could have meant over 90 new tax paying homeowners, the delays caused our sales to start right when the market started to turn. Instead of welcoming the developers, Fasano, Sigmund and Gifford, they were treated as if they were thieves in the night. City officials should have celebrated the projects and got behind them. The end result, 304 4th ave ended up in auctions and, sadly, the building is reverting to the mess that it was prior to our cleaning in up. I am a very big fan of Terry Reidy, but I put the bulk of the blame on him. Despite our constant begging of him to step in and assist us, he did not. Yes, we deserve a portion of the blame. Stupid arrogance did get in the way. But when you venture millions of your own money, albeit to make money, there should be some give and take. Again, I believe if we started this project under the new building department personnel, the project would have evolved the way we imagined. RE: Hamilton and the drfiveway. I had the same thing happen to me. Gypsy pavers offered to pave my driveway(in Oceanport) for $700. Once they got started it became $3200. I threw them off my property and have enjoyed the hald a driveway they paved. RE: House of Blues. I ask you, is there anyone more connected than our very own Dan S? RE: Moving city hall to the west side. How is this not a no brainer? The West Side of AP has been neglected since day 1. The people who live there have earned and deserve this. Get the project moving and eff the whole idea of a redevelopment poroject. Make the vacant land available, make it available to minority buyers t incredible incentives and get the governing ding bats out of the way and allow captalism, you all remember good old American capitalism, to take over. within a very short period of time, Springwood Ave and the West Side will be transformed into a vibrant, money making community. The nicest people live on the west side, again, they deserve this. RE:The Baronet. Fishman bought the theater promisin(at council meetings) and to the seller, Fasano, that he would keep the Baronet going. He chased us away and the theater is quickly falling into the state it was in when we bought it. I tried to discuss the logical idea of developing the Baronet, Fast Lane and Asbury Lanes, along with the Pryor Pavillion, into what it is. Agenuine Historical Arts District that would be a great tourist draw for the entire city. Larry Fishman refuse my calls, never returned a acall, and when I did finally get to speak with him, he continued his lying ways. The most important thing that can happen is for thsi lying, no account piece fo garbage to be ridden out of Asbury on a rail. He has done the city immeasurable harm. Thankfully, we were able to broach the idea to Gary Mottolla and he was morfe than receptive. Again, Fishman remains in the way. RE: The Blue Bishop football team. Get behind them. These guys, despite the overwhelming odds, are the epitome of champions. While we're at it, we should embrace APHS's glorious sports tradition. The men and woman who excelled are all getting old, there should be something done to preserve the unbelievalble APHS sports tradition. Happy Thanksgiving, I hope the dog finds his way home. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Van Zandt's School Music - We're a bit late
Also a very very good post. Tom I think that if you ever wanted to do the one thing in your life that could truly help Asbury Park, this might be the answer. I think many would support you in this endeavor. And kinda knowing you, you would not care what the opposition thought. How much money would something like this cost to have a case like this fought and won? I know this would be just an estimate. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, justifiedright [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oak it looks like we ended up agreeing in the end. I have no problm with choices people make. Go to private school, move to a good public district, etc. I support all of it. I do have a problem with government screwing things up by injecting themselves into it, which is what wrecked APHS - not parental choices. When buying a house, I absolutely avoided Asbury Park and the sending district because the High School is now segregated. I know that many, many other people did the same. That wasn't the case before the RBR ruling. I went to APHS with the sons of doctors, lawyers and millinaire businessmen. Yes, having that demographic was helpful to the poorer kids. That's gone thanks to the ruling. Look at real estate listings. Many of them list private schools on the listing so as not to list APHS. I laugh and cry everytime I see it. Since Avon no longer goes to APHS, their real estate has skyrocketed, now topping $1 Million on the MEDIAN house sale, and holding steady in this downturn. Everything changed when the Commissioner ruled that RBR having a better music program than Asbury Park is more important than whether a black kid goes to a segregated school. Read the decision that Mario linked. That was the ruling. It's the most bigoted, racist piece of government work I've seen in my lifetime, and it is shamelessly ignored. It's ignored because those with the political power in the area benefit from the ruling (like Avon); those without the power suffer from it (Asbury). Just imagine the classic busing issue: If a primarily white school in the area was suddenly going to be filled with poor black kids from Asbury, people would go berserk. There would be all sorts of lawsuits to stop it, with claims of government interference, social engineering, and claims that the school's natural demographic should be preserved. That ruling by the Commissioner is exactly the same thing with the colors reversed. The NATURAL DEMOGRAPHIC of APHS was racially and economically diversified, just as Ocean Township is now. The ruling destroyed that by busing the white kids past Asbury Park to another public school in Little Silver. Who is going to file the the Federal Civil Rights lawsuit claiming de facto segregation (can anyone claim that wasn't the result of the ruling with a straight face)? Are the white parents who are avoiding APHS going to do it? No. The poor black parents? I don't think so. AP Board of Ed? No, too busy gossiping and in fighting to tackle something so serious and important. If APHS was naturally segregated by race, you wouldn't hear a peep out of me. Since it is racially segregateed by the government with busing to another public school, I'm confident my objection is on the moral high ground, even if I stand alone. Standing alone though, I'm starting to feel like I don't care anymore either. The state can keep the school segregated, Asbury Park Board of Ed (Bored of Ed?) can keep taking the Abbott hush money and not challenge the segregation ruling, and none of it is going to hurt me. So why should I care? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakdorf@ wrote: TD, You and I can both stop, take residence in AP, and stick our kids there. but we haven't. I was excited to learn of this because in recent weeks, I have been working on a draft plan for a Committee for Fiscal Responsibility. From his brief explanation of what he has in mind, I believe we are on the same page on this issue. I have included a copy of my draft plan below for your review and have submitted this plan to the City Manager, along with a short list of names of citizens that I feel should serve on this committee. It is important for each of you to know why this committee is so necessary at this point in Asbury Park's development. Because of the failed policies of the Council majority, most specifically in regards to the Waterfront Redevelopment Plan and the Waterfront Redevelopment Agreement, our city is short $8 million dollars in tax revenue to cover our bills for 2007 and it is projected that we will be short $12.5 million dollars in 2008. For those of you who are unaware, by this point in the redevelopment of the waterfront, we should have been close to having 1200 new condominium units (300 each year). To date, we have approximately 40. One cannot blame the most recent market shifts for this lack of performance. This is a matter of incompetence on the part of Asbury Partners and an unwillingness to play hard ball on the part of the Council majority. These are the facts and we must deal with them. What is necessary now is clear leadership and direction to get our fiscal house in order. We must recruit the most qualified citizens to help the city reach the goals and objectives I have outlined below. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please email me at james.keady@ or email the City Manager at terence.reidy@ For your convenience I have posted this information on my blog at www.keadyreport.blogspot.com. If you have comments you would like other citizens to read, please post them there. I hope this finds you well. Could that meeting be the first step to use emminent domain AGAINST the Partners and to allow MM to take it all over by themselves? I have written and spoken about this for a couple of years. I have advised (or tried to) on this matter. The WRA prohibits the City from condemning property in the redevelopment zone without Partner's approval. That is so Partners cannot be forced to take and pay for property before it wants to. It would include Partners properties as well. However, what I told the city, is that it cannot contractually agree to limits its inherent sovereign power. Thus, nothing could stop the city from violating that provision. Only the state legislature can limit a local sovereign's power of eminent domain. However, that being said, while nothing could stop the city from taking property contrary to that provision, Partners might be able to sue for breach of contract. However, another possibility is that the court could find that the provision limiting the city's power of eminent domain was contrary to the public good and thus, the provision is not only unenforceable but void ab initio (never existed). All of this is an invitation to litigation. No one wanted it, especially after being held in purgatory by the bankruptcy court. However, I believe that ultimately a tiger cannot change its stripes and litigation will be necessary. While I wish it did not have to happen, perhaps the city leaders will finally reach the breaking point and decide that we have to tighten our belts and go to the mattresses. That litigation could grease the skids for Partners' exit. Yahoo! I always thought a great idea would be to put the senior center next to the Library. The property to the right if you are going up the steps. I'm sure the city could get it for a good price or through eminent domain. What I would do is expand the library and connect via an enclosed passageway to the senior center. That way the two building could cross pollinate uses. The senior could go to the library, volunteer, check out books, baby sit, use computers, etc. and the library could hold seminars at the senior center in the evenings. A win win for all. The other nice thing is that the seniors could use Jacks park and keep an eye on the things. This location is within walking distance to Cookman avenue and the Boardwalk. I went to Jewell Marketings website. I think I found out why the idea of a hundred banjo players was marketed for the Apple Festival. Mr. Jewell teaches banjos. [AsburyPark] Downtown Marketing
I always wondered why we don't have any major signs telling people traveling on Main to turn into the downtown district. A lot of tourists going up and down the coast might not even know this area exists and just keep on going straight to somewhere else to spend their money. Really, for a few well placed signs, think how much traffic would be diverted into the district and down along the ocean. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Mayor's Ball
Tom D., I will be direct. 1. Can you tell me last years' total dollar amount given to charity from the Mayors' Ball. The reason I ask is I'm curious if the amount of UEZ money or city taxes needed to run the event was greater than the amount given to charity. My Mayors Ball thread started because one day in August the Council decided they were no longer going to take money to help pay for the Mayors' Ball from the developers and attorneys involved in Asbury Park. Then Gilmour is suspended, and now they are going to take money for the Mayors' Ball from said developers and attorneys. Tom,can you answer number 1? Yahoo! I know this story is a little old, but if you go look at the last article Mellina wrote for the Coaster posted on August 28th,2007,(Deja Vu all oner Again) on AsburyPark.net, she mentions all the corrupt people who got busted in the FBI raids. She fails to mention Weldon at all. An oversight? This is the one part where I think Mallina is so inconsistant. [AsburyPark] Re: Marketing ??
I see the benefits of the Fourth of July parade to the community, but the Mayor's ball? If you can't make a profit off of the tickets what are we doing? Paying for fluffing feathers. And I'm suprised the three knuckle heads did not think it was a little imapproprite to take this money from developers and attorneys in the past. They better not get elected again. Last month, Bruno and some other council members raised concerns over the 110th campaign when funding for certain events, such as the deputy mayor's own Fourth of July Parade and the Mayor's Ball, did not come through as it had in the past. The problem, Bruno said in August, was that he and others agreed not to go to the developers and city attorneys for funding for their traditional events as they had in the past. Yahoo!
