Truth be told, it's been hardly 50 years since Rosa Parks took her brave stand on that bus, and even though that was a great and admirable first step, it has been and still is an uphill battle for many African Americans. It shocks me how much racism still exists in our world, and sometimes it comes from surprising sources. of respect, I stepped aside and gave you my entire column space the
following week for a reply and the last word. You took it.

KEady should be commended for his rec initiatives. It's a sahme that he has to beg for funding for them. Why wait for the funds, when they exist in various programs - state and federal. Take ahrd look at some city hall jobs. By the way, Ocean Township does open their rec programs to outsiders - if there is space in the program. Most programs there is a fee. I'm SURE if a familya doesn't hve the $ to pay for the fee - there IS a little angel to help the modest fee. Yahoo! Even if we wanted to hire 10 new cops right now, as Deputy Mayor Bruno correctly pointed out at the meeting on Wednesday, they would not be ready to hit the streets for almost a year. I want action NOW too Allan. That is why I am pushing my idea of greater immediate involvement from police in our surrounding municipalities and from the county and state forces. Again, our crime and violence problem is linked to regional issues and we should have regional cooperation for a regional solution. As for spending money on recreation, as an example, I can get a basketball league going two nights a week (which means two nights that these young guys won't be on the streets) for about $3-4K. This is a far cry from the tens of thousands it would take to hire one new police officer with benefits. I may also be able to get this paid for without city money, similar to my soccer program that I run in town where the program is completely self-sufficient through donations and fees. However, in light of recent events, I do think that taking a significant amount of money from the Community Development and Affordable Housing fund and investing it in recreation programs would pay both short and long-term dividends for the community. To this end, I have been in conversations with the Mayor and we JOINTLY stated at the meeting on Wednesday that we are going to be hammering out an expanded program and attaching a dollar amount to it in the near future. I am curious, have you called or emailed anyone in the Council majority and asked them for their plan of action on this matter? If so, can you please let me know what information you were able to get. On a completely different note. I would like respond to Rev. Brown's labeling me a Progressive Democrat. Progressive, yes, I will even proudly wear the mantle of liberal, (i.e. open minded and willing to accept and promote change). I am not however, a Democrat. I'm certain that Basketball isn't high up on the list of things that people on the West Side are complaining about the day after a teenager got shot in the face. They need cops. I don't know the solution either. Ball fields may not be the cure all, but you have to start somewhere. Some have been saved by someone else reaching out. If you rely on people like me, nothing is going to happen. Again, I disagree with him on many issues, but Keady is willing to put his money where his mouth is and I have to respect him for that, idealist and all. Thus, I think he has often been attacked unfairly. I stand up for someone else too (I have even called the dogs off Tommy Boy - not that I get any thanks for it ;)). Typical Cracker suggestion. Liberals are not open minded and the only change they promote is from other's views and policies to theirs.
