Oh please, AP was never about real estate marketing in the first place. That
concept is the biggest failure of this city ever. It's about a beach, a
boardwalk, a music scene, and once upon a time, entertainment on a scale we
know nothing about anymore. The real estate push is about a bunch of greedy
people who care more about making money off of people then creating something
unique and culturally rewarding.

Yes, it lost its original intent because the real estate market went south.
Don't be upset at the Roadtrip organizers; take it up with the realtors who
didn't sponsor the real estate side of the event as they have in the past.
The realtors dropped the ball on this weekend when they stopped selling homes
and making money because of the economy. Why didn't they take a chance with
their own money by hosting a real estate trolley like they did in the past,
where were all the open houses etc...?

And I resent (and will speak up) against the closing of any public property
for a private event for which you have to pay. Why should a section of the
beach be closed off so a private group (bs on the not-for-profit) can charge
$45 and $60 to get in there? Why should the CH/Paramount arcade - a public
easement be closed Friday Night (Meet and Greet) and you have to pay $15 to
get in? This should not happen next year. Go rent a PRIVATE venue and do not
close a PUBLIC area that I pay taxes and beach fees to use. That goes for
weddings on the beach too that have had the nerve to ask people to move
 while setting up?

uummm maybe because the weekend events (including Tiesto) brought in over
8,000 people who packed every hotel and BB in Asbury and Ocean Grove and the
people also over loaded the meters with money and shopped and dined in Asbury
stores and eateries? The town made money on the people who attended. What was
the inconvenience for you? You had to walk around the building on Friday
during the 4 hr window that they had the party? I would rather the out of
towners come to Asbury and spend their money and keep my taxes low. People
who didn't pay for the beach event got the same entertainment for FREE as
people who paid $60! Is it that important for you to set up a blanket against
 the building?

I guess if we stop these events we have to stop all events like volleyball,
lifeguard competitions, polar bear plunges, marathons, art fairs, fireworks
etc… boy the beach is getting boring.

2010-07-20 Thread asburycouple
I thought everything going on this weekend was fantastic for the boardwalk, the
city and for those merchants who have bet the ranch to make it here.

Regardless of the initial intent of the Road Trip, it was a reason (along with
Tiesto) for thousands of people to come here and spend money, while likely also
being very pleasantly surprised by the environment making many likely to return
without a major event.

I was talking with the guy who owns the Cuban restaurant and he was staying
open until 4am each night because the business was there to warrant it. We
complain about people closing early - if they have a reason to stay open they
will, and those who don't will be replaced by those who will. But these kinds
of events are the things that draw the crowds that provide the reason...

There was a real vibe on the boardwalk right through a packed Sunday night.
Nicely done.

I am against closing public proerty and making someone pay to enter it. That

Dan just sums it all up. Those boys from Brooklyn.

Imagine if you had to pay school taxes for real - what those property taxes
would be?

Here's a summary of a new tax bill I just got on a property I own in Ocean Twp.

The lot is 100x100 and next to wet lands and is on a DIRT road.

The HOUSE is only 700 sq ft and assessed at $226,000 (paid $181,000 for it, and
not worth a dime more...)

The breakdown on taxes:

County: $ 707.30
Open Space: $45.34
REGIONAL SCHOOL TAX: $2863.22 ( LOOK LOOK)
Library: $40.81
MUNI TAX: $970
FIRE DEPT: $106.55 (WORTH EVERY DIME)

My house (it is a carriage house about 1200 sq feet give/take, it is a
condo with 5 units in the Mansion house) was billed in AP at almost
$8000/year. It was lowered then til about $6k, but yeah if I had to pay another
couple of grand on top of that for the crappy schools system I would be pissed.
The funny thing, was that before they condo'd teh lot, the whole thing with the
big house and everything was $9000/year.

You misunderstand. They close off a portion of the 5th ave beach for the sat
sand blast portion of road trip and then charge $45 in advance and $60 at door

You get to dance on the beach for that amount. I don't go, but it irks me to
have public property closed for private groups who can then charge admission.

To me, its the beach, and there is a lot of it compared to the space used for

However, CH not being open w/o paying an admission is (as Snoop Dog would say)

[AsburyPark] Re: Observations this weekend...- Road Trip BS

2010-07-20 Thread oOoOoOo
All valid points about CH, but we can't stop there. I guess someone needs to
bring this all up at the next city council meeting. I guess when we can kiss
the Asbury Film Festival event at CH goodbye as well since it's closed off for
their welcoming event. Let's kick out revision theatre from the carousel
building as well. They have the nerve to charge for tickets to see Tommy in a
public space!
Since we can't please all, I think they should just ban all events on public
space in Asbury starting with Roadtrip. The organizers should move it to
Belmar or long branch. Who needs 1,000s of people spending money in town and
taking up valuable beach space, hotel rooms and filling up restaurants? Let
some other towns share the wealth. Asbury doesn't need it and I'm sure places
like Long Branch would welcome all the revenue. I'm sure the people going to
Biggies Clam shack will more than make up for all the hundreds of thousands of
dollars in lost revenue from the weekend. I almost forgot to mention ending gay
pride in asbury park. They charged for that too and closed public streets for a
parade. Bye Bye Pride. Since we can't pick and choose, we must end all events
on public space. No more BBQ festival in the park either. Get rid of the flea
markets at sunset park as well. Bye Bye farmers market. I should be able to
play kickball in that space at that exact time since my taxes go to mowing that
lawn. Bye bye Oysterfest, it was fun while it lasted. No more Jazz festival
either. Whew the list keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Why did I move to Asbury Park?

From a residents point of view, I agree with you 100%, its ludicris to want to
end any of that stuff, quite frankly its what makes AP so great, however, look
at it from a visitors point of view...

I bring my family in from out of town to hit up the beach, and the kids want to
hit Biggies for a quick bite, but now I have to tell my kids NO because there
is a cover charge

I personally don't agree with shutting down the arcade because of a meet and
greet

There are plenty of other places that could have happened at besides the
arcade, how about the banquet hall in the Berkely?

But otherwise I agree with you, its peddie BS to complain about this stuff,
especially when the revenue is there

All valid points about CH, but we can't stop there. I guess someone needs to
bring this all up at the next city council meeting. I guess when we can kiss
the Asbury Film Festival event at CH goodbye as well since it's closed off for
their welcoming event. Let's kick out revision theatre from the carousel
building as well. They have the nerve to charge for tickets to see Tommy in a
public space!

I understand where you are coming from, but looking at the big picture, its a 4
hr window (7pm-11pm) that CH is closed to the public. I think my guests would
be more pissed off if they were mugged or had their car broken into. In my
opinion, crime is more of a problem than whether I have to move my blanket 100
ft to the right or have to go to Pop's Garage instead of biggies for clams.

You can say that again.

I mean there are several factors playing into the crime, and though its not the
biggest factor, I think our city officials are so concerned with parking
meters and the waterfront that they forgot about the crime and addressing it

Sure the undercover prostitution bust a few weeks back was nice, but I don't
think that one guy (of of the bunch busted)...the 78yr old man was really a
threat to the city

But the 20 or so youth draped in red on the boardwalk probably is, as well as
the same guy slinging rock at sunset park every night, or the two who deal off
their porch on comstock

I could go on for days

CH is not a public space. It belongs to MM now. The passageway is public space
in the form of a public easement. I agree, the passageway should not be closed
off and charge people to enter if that is the case.

Let's kick out revision theatre from the carousel building as well. They have
the nerve to charge for tickets to see Tommy in a public space!

The Carousel House is not public space but belongs to MM. Tommy was wonderful.
I bought tickets to all three shows and I am a supporting member of the
Revision.

Misconstruing. Closing public space for private gain and charging the public to
enter.

I almost forgot to mention ending gay pride in asbury park. They charged for

to Belmar or long branch. Who needs 1,000s of people spending money in town
and taking up valuable beach space, hotel rooms and filling up restaurants?
Let some other towns share the wealth. Asbury doesn't need it and I'm sure
places like Long Branch would welcome all the revenue. I'm sure the people
going to Biggies Clam shack will more than make up for all the hundreds of
thousands of dollars in lost revenue from the weekend. I almost forgot to
mention ending gay pride in asbury park. They charged for that too and
closed public streets for a parade. Bye Bye Pride. Since we can't pick and
choose, we must end all events on public space. No more BBQ festival in the
 park
either. Get rid of the flea markets at sunset park as well. Bye Bye
farmers market. I should be able to play kickball in that space at that
 exact
 time since my taxe
s go to mowing that lawn. Bye bye Oysterfest, it was fun while it lasted.
No more Jazz festival either. Whew the list keeps getting bigger and
 bigger.

Big difference in not being able to access public space temporarily for an
event and only being able to access that space for a fee to same event.

Listen, if the public wants to do it fine, but then why not a cut of the pie?

So let the city close down your entire block for a day and for a permit fee
give it over to a private entity who can then park cars there for a fee. During
that time you cannot enter that street or park your car without paying that
fee. It's a deal.

Not true at all. You could have volunteered your time and effort in exchange
for a free ticket to the events. Someone has to pay for marketing, insurance,
dj's, sound system, entertainment, management etc... If you can't afford it,
volunteer, but don't try to ruin it for everyone else. Some of us think the $60
ticket is a bargain compared to the $100 for the same event in the city.

Those spaces are free 99% of the time. Lighten up a little and I won't park my
car in front of your house anymore.

The use of the beach was not free for Sand Blast. The city charges a fee
for the use of the area and depending on the number of guests the fee gets
increased. The participants also have to buy a beach badge if they want to
use the beach beyond the party. Weddings have to pay a fee, and so do all the
other events that take place on the beach the boardwalk in the streets and
also the parks. If anyone would like to look at the fee schedule I suggest
you reach out to Tom Gilmour he would be able to provide that information.

The event coordinator/promoter is also responsible to pay for
Police/Fire/Ems and whatever services are needed from the city. Unless the
event is
hosted by the city the taxpayer does not pay a dime.

Hope this sheds some light on concerns.

Oh yeah, one more thing. All events such as the ones that took place this

then given to the City Council and they have the final say if the event

The city has to make money. Anyone have an idea on how much parking meters have
taken in along with ticketing for parking?

Roll back the clock to the first gay pride parade which was on the boardwalk. I
had a place way back then. The one mother with kid on a deserted boardwalk ran
for cover - it was more like a gay rights here we are parade.

The houses then were near worthless and the city coudln't collect a dime in
taxes.

The city should make more use of it's main asset - the beach - charge away.

Someone should produce a gay version of Bay Watch - in AP.

Look at all the people this weekend in AP. The weekdays are pretty quiet - you
still need MORE housing, more day trippers and more local weekday residents. AP
is still lacking all of the above to really support day business in AP.

That's why you need events to bring them in with disposable cash. Not even can
dish out $3.25 for a slice of pizza now. Before you know winter will be here.

Just an observation.

 2. Street lights - people complained those lights look terrible. However -
there are not enough lights down Asbury Ave/cookman, around the Esperanza
 (3rd/4th ave).

 3. didn't see any PD around the meters last night - and the meter at Asbury
Ave and Ocean Ave was out (next to the casino)...and those directions are
hard to read at night and the guy in front of me used a credit card. It took
about 3 minutes for it go through.

 4. HOT TUNA - my brother in law lvoed it as we walked by - that's from our
time - reminded him he has about 6 years on me. And is it that neccessary to
try to hide the stage from viewers on the boardwalk with another row of
banners? Pretty soon they'll start charging for boardwalk seating - better
then the the PNC views for sure.

 5. Still don't know why some places close up at 9pm in the middle of the
 summer and 85 degrees out.

Light at Asbury/Cookman/Kinglsey is a disaster waiting to happen. Most people
roll through stop signs and simply ignore that a flashing red light (Kingsley
and Cookman) is a stop sign. I have to blare my horn each time I roll through
on Asbury whether on two or four wheels.

Grand Avenue is another disaster. Take the traffic lights away if they are not
going to be used. Some traveling on Grand keep stopping thinking maybe they are
out. Personally, I think the lights should be used. Too many roll through
east/west stop signs.

MM pays for the cops monitoring the meters. A joke. We need those bike cops
back. Late Saturday cops checking coolers on beach for alcohol and issued
tickets. Should be patrolling streets and stopping muggings. Someone got mugged
getting off the train Friday.

And lastly, Road Trip has lost its original intent as a real estate marketing
tool to have people buy in AP. Nothing but a money-making circuit party for the
organizer(s). And I resent (and will speak up) against the closing of any
public property for a private event for which you have to pay. Why should a
section of the beach be closed off so a private group (bs on the
not-for-profit) can charge $45 and $60 to get in there? Why should the
CH/Paramount arcade - a public easement be closed Friday Night (Meet and Greet)
and you have to pay $15 to get in? This should not happen next year. Go rent a
PRIVATE venue and do not close a PUBLIC area that I pay taxes and beach fees to
use. That goes for weddings on the beach too that have had the nerve to ask
people to move while setting up?

Don't be upset at the Roadtrip organizers; take it up with the realtors who

uummm maybe because the weekend events (including Tiesto) brought in over 8,000
people who packed every hotel and BB in Asbury and Ocean Grove and the people
also over loaded the meters with money and shopped and dined in Asbury stores
and eateries? The town made money on the people who attended. What was the
inconvenience for you? You had to walk around the building on Friday during the
4 hr window that they had the party? I would rather the out of towners come to
Asbury and spend their money and keep my taxes low. People who didn't pay for
the beach event got the same entertainment for FREE as people who paid $60! Is
it that important for you to set up a blanket against the building?

I guess if we stop these events we have to stop all events like volleyball,
lifeguard competitions, polar bear plunges, marathons, art fairs, fireworks
etc… boy the beach is getting boring.

Oh please, AP was never about real estate marketing in the first place. That
concept is the biggest failure of this city ever. It's about a beach, a
boardwalk, a music scene, and once upon a time, entertainment on a scale we
know nothing about anymore. The real estate push is about a bunch of greedy
people who care more about making money off of people then creating something
unique and culturally rewarding.

 while setting up?

uummm maybe because the weekend events (including Tiesto) brought in over
8,000 people who packed every hotel and BB in Asbury and Ocean Grove and the
people also over loaded the meters with money and shopped and dined in Asbury
stores and eateries?
