Yep, my windows 7 experience helped to make windows 8 have practically no learning curve. I do appreciate the boot times, and general snappyness of the operating system. I heard a rumor that a future windows release will lower hardware requirements, which means windows could run on some pretty low powered stuff. I guess we will see. I think from here on out, power users will just have to grit there teeth and deal with what microsoft's vission ends up being.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166060#p166060

most accessible form of linux without broken accessibility advice need

Hey guys. I love experimenting with different operating systems. I have tryed using sonar linux, vinux, and even mainstream ubuntu 13.10. In my experience, orca seems to be an ok screen reader. However, when using firefox, i usually experience some form of broken accessibility, which can be very frustrating when i want to fly through web paiges quickly. I'm guessing that as things get updated, accessibility is more easily broken? I don't have the linux experience to know how to just simply have a fully working distro with no issues. Could someone please point me in the right dirrection? I like linux as a whole, i just need to know how to set up a distro so i don't mess things up. Re: Things you really miss?

I miss arcades as well. I miss playing all the mortal kombat games especially. That was how i got in to the series as a whole, and i have some great memories of playing those games at various arcades in my state. I also miss old tech. I remember my first computer, an old compaq desktop with windows 98 SE. That machine lasted several years, eventually getting an XP update, and trucking right along until the motherboard died. I have recently got in to buying older machines, and upgrading them, so they perform almost like new. I really can appreciate how far tech has come. I remember in the 90s how owning a computer was a big deal, almost like a status statement. I can even remember the dos days, and the games i played as a young kid on those systems. While i love modern tech, i really miss the days of old sometimes.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166465#p166465

At fastfinge: i think you hit the nail on the head about missing the function of old tech. I believe that is what i should have said. As an example, i certainly don't miss the ungodly long load times of dial up, or windows boot times, depending on the machine of course. I think i just miss how simple things could be. Old windows interfaces and menus just seemed more functional in a lot of ways. Of course i also miss my snes, and even my old CD players with my large collection of CDS. Now a days, modern tech has allowed people to access vast ammounts of information which is pretty cool.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166501#p166501

Re: Unattended installation of Windows 7-8 without WAIK

With windows 7, this is quite easy to do. You can just install the operating system from the windows vista desktop, or another version of 7. With xp though, you can't do this, as the installer is not compatable with newer versions of windows. So, the talking PE gets things started for you, the rest is easy. I'm using an old computer as a media machine, running xp. Since support will be ending soon, i'll keep it off of the internet.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166772#p166772

Re: Training Centers

Ok, this may sound a little more harsh than my speaking tone would suggest. I feel that an organization who can't even provide career training options is a joke. While learning basic living skills, I would want options to learn how to build and repair computers, or take a course in computer hardware at the very least. I would expect such an organization would have many different options besides would shop? Seriusly? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that there are most likely a very few number of people who would have interest in such things. While I understand that this might be a confidence boost for some, again I want options, I don't want to be force fed projects that NFB feels that I need to be successful. I also feel that totally blind people like myself should be able to opt out of the sleep shades, it's pointless, sorry. I could understand needing to level the playing field a little. But if you have no vision at all, why bother? I'll stick
to what works for me personally, receiving my training from friends and family, not an organization who expects me to play follow the leader, and be molded in to there image  Blind power baby! Sure, if it works for you, rock on, but I think the acultist attitude of the NFB is well documented and laughable. We aren't in the 1950s any more, blind people get out, have hobbys, and, from what I have observed on this forum, pretty modernized and educated. The NFB needs to be open to this, and offer more options, and not only living skills, but possible training programs for career oriented people. I stress, if it works for some folks, great, but keep your options open.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=167036#p167036

Re: Training Centers

At rstrunk: Sorry for my ranting, I see your much more level headed and aware than most NFB officials I have had the pleasure of talking to. My acultist comment was a little over the top, i'll just put that on the table right now. But it would seem from the outside, that the NFB does indeed want to train lemmings, and I say this more of the individuals who have noted this in there stories of personal experiences at training centers. I personaly was very mainstreamed my whole life, only going to one local training center in my state for a month, which did help me brush up on some basic living skills. Believe me, I realize I am far from perfect, and could probably use more training, but it is difficult to stay positive when you hear of others not having the best quality NFB experience. I'm sure if you poke around forums like this one for NFB topics, you will realize my point. I simply feel that blind people would be in the best situation if they attempted to integrate with
the sighted world as much, and as soon as possible, so that we as a society will have one less area that devides us. I knew a blind woman who told me that going to schools for the blind until she was an adult was the worst thing she ever did, as only hanging around only blind people gave her a very limited view of the real world. Those schools and training centers did not give her the social skills that she needed to interact with sighted peers effectively, and she applauded my efforts at public school and beyond. Again, i'm not down on the NFB as a whole, I realize that people need training, but perhaps, there needs to be a new approach that includes society integration and preparation for harsher challenges like avoiding being stereotyped, and placed in a nice little box to be labeled by society.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=167080#p167080

Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

I think what still kind of bugs me is why does modern windows require at least 2 gigs of ram to run? Sure, hardware has evolved, but who really cares about the arrow graphics of 7, or the modern UI of 8? While I can use it just fine, I can't help but miss the days of only needing 512 MB of ram, and an install disc was less that a gig. While Microsoft says you can run windows 7 on a gig of ram, just try, it crawls. Why not just release a modern xp, same look, same feel, maybe some performance tweaks for current hardware, but keep the folder structures and everything. I'm truly going to miss XP from a productivity stand point, and of course, playing old games from the dos days, and games programed with vb6 was easy. While I could go round and round with these points, I think what I really want from any operating system is ultimate customization without having to click around 20 times to get to the heart of the OS. On this machine right now, i'm running windows 8.1, no
t to bad, but I would be just as happy, if not more, to run XP without this deadline.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=168094#p168094

Nice job Gellman. I do have one request though. I really think there needs to be a way to install xp on the actual hardware that is being used. The PE environment is fine, but i still would like a way to install xp if at all possible. The problem XP installation is tricky without spoken feedback, even though it's certainly possible. Xp is picky about partitions and the way it boots, so it's not always easy to find out if an error occurs during installation. But to the topic at hand, while i can't comment on the mac OS fully yet, i would suggest simply keep a windows machine handy if you want to use windows instead of going through boot camp. I know you bring up programming as a good job consideration here and there on the forum. So, let's say your on a project with a dev team. However, from what i gather, this can be a pain at times, and require a lot of work arounds and such. I think if i ever buy a mac, it would be literally a computer to simply screw around on, and get as much out of the mac OS as i could. I have 3 windows machines here, so it's not like i'm lacking windows in my life. I honestly think mac would just be a compliment to windows in a way, doing the same things differently. Hey guys. Just wonder how many folks have got dirty with there computers, not afraid to put there hands in there and swap out a drive, ram, or motherboard. I'm approaching this from a blind person's perspective of course. How about power supply and CPU upgrades though? Does anyone have any experience with these tasks? Heat syncs, thirmal paste, fans, all of it? Don't be afraid to go in to detail on how you accomplished tasks of this type by yourself, or with only a little help. Totaly agree Tom. I guess it's that whole nerdy asspect of myself lol. The machine i aquired is a fairly but not to old Dell OptiPlex. It came with windows Xp pro and 2 gigs of ram. I swear i think someone overclocked the pintium 4 processor in there because windows says it's running at 3.8 GHZ, which i was not expecting. Anyway, i love the design, as it is a small form factor machine, yet the parts are all full sized desktop components. So, i'll start by upgrading the memory to about 4 gigs, as that is the max the proprietary Dell board will support. I'll throw in a Crutial SSD for speed, and i bet i'll have a pretty modern feeling and snappy system. Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Well, not sure if this was mentioned around the forum recently but, xp support is over April 8th of this year. I can't help having nistalgia over what xp is, and was in the past. Hell, i'm even tempted to put it on one of my spare machines for old times sake until support goes away. I love it's interface, and it's speed on older hardware. In some ways, i like it more than windows 7, because even if you have it on a machine with pretty low specs, it performs quite fluidly. Try to run 7 with only a gig of ram and tell me how that works out for you lol. Anyway, i want to open up a xp fondness topic, just to reflect on the operating system as a whole, and how microsoft are bastards for pulling the plug on folks who aren't quite ready. While i can appreciate modern operating systems like windows 7 and 8, i started really learning all my computer skills on XP, so it brings back good memories. Sure, xp absolutely has it's security flaws, but i wish there was

I have heard that places like hospetals and similar businesses still run XP, and may take a while to migrate there systems over to 7 for cost reasons. This is where it could get tough for them, because there won't be any more security patches. I guess people could move to 7 over time, but before you know it, microsoft will be saying, all people need to be running windows 8, because support for 7 will be ending. I don't think people should be punished for still running older hardware that is still on XP, it would be nice if a 3rd party company still offered patches until most people could be in a spot to afford new hardware. Re: Goodbye Windows XP, i still get nistalgic over you.

Dark, i think another asspect to consider is security concerns. How secure do you think your xp box will be in 5, 10 years? Anti virus is one thing, but what if someone hacked the microsoft update feature once support went away, and you were subjected to a backdoor atack of some kind? This is just a quick example but it's something to think about. If anything, just upgrade to vista, you could switch the start menu and folders to classic mode, which is basically the XP interface. For whatever reason, this feature wasn't in windows 7. Vista support ends in 2017, so that would give you a few more years of a secure system. My concern is that once the operating system receivs no more patches, how safe will you be? If there were 3rd party patches, hell, you could be perfectly content on xp for like another 10 years. I certainly understand your concerns, but i wouldn't want to hear that you got your system hacked and information compromised. That's something no one wa
nts to go through. But, thats just my thoughts on the matter. The only reason i can afford to keep my systems up to date and upgraded is because i get free microsoft products through my school. Also, i have a passion for computers and technology, but i know not everyone feels that way.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=157097#p157097

Good point dark, i figure those swords scream with historical inaccuracys. For example, something i was pondering was, if legolas was a real person, let's assume for a second middle earth was real, would he have used the types of weapons like is type of bow, or his apparent fighting knives? I think Legolas simply used a longbow, not sure what type it could have been. Re: Let's really dig in to Tolkiin and Lord of the Rings,

Nice post Joseph. I concur with your thinking on the book to film adaptations. To be honest, and i may be frowned upon for saying it, but if they didn't make the hobbit an epic, the only thing it would be is an epic one watch, go in the box never to be seen again. I think the epic nature of the lord of the rings films drew a lot of people to watch, i think Jackson has a good idea of his audience after 10 years so, we now get an epic hobbit triligy, whether Tolkien fanatics want it or not lol. Don't get me wrong, i'm just as likely as the next Tolkien fan to pick apart the literature from cover to cover, but i see the films as separate, yet similarly related works of art.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=142585#p142585

Re: Let's really dig in to Tolkiin and Lord of the Rings,

One thing i did like about Thorin was the sense that he was one tough dwarf, and quite a bigger warrior than his dwarf size might have suggested. Although, one thing that kind of bothers me now is his all issue with Elrond in the film. In the book, is really only mentioned that the dwarves and elves don't get along all that well, but i don't like the whole Thorin getting testy with Elrond bit in the movie. I'm reading the book right now, and Thorin, by Gandalf's suggestion, tryed to keep a straight face and be polite. I guess my point is, the movie kind of makes Thorin out to be an ass, which is not how i picture him.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=142623#p142623

I liked all of those asspects as well. One thing that concerns me, is jackson overdoing the bit about the necromancer. While it was suggested in the book that he is indeed a threat, the white council dealt with him in there own time, hense, only being briefly touched upon. I would say i totaly see where most of you are comeing from. People tell me to get out more and be more social, when the reality is, i have a fantastic girlfriend, and a close friend very close by. Why should i go somewhere to socialize when the people in my close circle give me all the emotional support i will ever need? There are times that yes, i want to go somewhere on the fly, but it's pretty much not possible unless i get a ride from someone, as the transportation in my area sucks. I can't simply walk out my door and drive somewhere and screw around for a couple of ours. As a blind person, i almost need a checklist, because if i walk around a store by myself, even if i simply intended to just look around, people would think i'm crazy or need help, plus, it's inpractical anyway. So, as tward said, sighted folks have a much simpler go out and do attitude, as it's more accesible and natural for them.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=143069#p143069

At camlorn: having used windows 8 for quite some time, i can say that narator has a lot of potential. The voices lag a bit, but as far as features go, it's on par with voiceover on IOS in my oppinion. The capslock is the equivalent of the voiceover key in this case. It has pretty good support for metro apps in windows 8, and you can brouz the web with it, and work in office and be productive with it. Just use espeak for the sapi voice and you pretty much have a fully functional screen reader. Of course it doesn't have ocr, or anything fancy like that, but in all honesty, someone could use it as a primary screenreader if they didn't know any better. To say that microsoft won't advance it's development is probably hearsay, because if enough people reach out to the developers and provide actual feedback, it could be made to expand to comercial level. Microsoft isn't all bad as some people tend to conclude. Is narater a service at this point? Yes. Would i
use it as my primary screen reader? No, however, if it does get a few more features like faster voices, it could be a fantastic built in alternative.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=144359#p144359

Just keep talking to her on facebook and see where things go. Be patient with your feelings and hers. If she wants to hang out, then she will mention it. If you want to hang out with her, just set up a time and place. If she says no, so be it, it wasn't meant to be. I know it may sound rough, but in most cases, good relationships happen when your not looking for one. Try to keep your emotions and insecurity out of the picture, and just talk to her and try to make a friend. I speak from experience man, so i don't just throw around advice for nothing. I have been with my girlfriend for 5 years now, we never thought we would be in a relationship at first, but it grew. So, as i said, be patient with it, and see where things go. So, after installing sonar 13.4, as well as trying vinux 4.0, i still haven't found a sollution to this orca problem, so i thought i would ask here. In a nutshell, while navigating the internet with firefox, at a random point in time, the arrow keys will stop responding, as well as the orca modifyer key, and all related orca commands. In fact it got so bad even after multiple restarts, i had to run orca from the tourmanal, as it crashed on startup. There is something going on, but i don't have enough linux knoledge under my belt to pinpoint the issue. I have every thing updated and seemingly running properly. I'm ringing my hands with frustration, as i do enjoy this distro, however if i can't solve this problem, i will honestly think less of the stabiliby of ubuntu. Here's what i ended up doing. I ended up installing ubuntu 12.4.2 from the actual ubuntu website. And have had no problems at all after that installation. I have found out that it is the latest firefox update that clashes with orca, at least, the latest version of sonar and vinux seem to have a problem. I was running natively by the way. My 2.4 i5 chip is more than enough to run linux, so it wasn't hardware related. I'll stick with this release for quite a while, as i'm not keen or breaking anything lol. The only thing that is a slight issue with this firefox update on this version of ubuntu is the f 10 key doesn't bring up the file menu.
