Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] MEASUREMENTS: Audiophile Sound and Operating Systems. (Windows 8.1, Windows 10...)
Here's a table with examples of typical db(A) levels for some events, for instance fire cracker explodes at shoulder: 170 dB(A). Search for Typical dbA levels. http://www.sengpielaudio.com/TableOfSoundPressureLevels.htm There's a lot of other interesting stuff there too. For example that a non-distorted sound cannot be louder that 194dB, because that corresponds to the average air pressure. Search for How many decibels is the loudest noise?. Also don't forget that according to Fletcher-Munson you can only hear 20kHz at 120dB, which happens to be the threshold of pain. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Cut your speakers in half!
(Clickbait schlittbait) Yesterday I paid a visit to a local hi-fi store. They sell mostly gear of the crazy variety, but they also have excellent speakers, some of which I wanted to listen to. There I found a floorstanding speaker cut in half, lengthwise. The point obviously to show the advanced technology used by this brand. This speaker is manufactured by a well known expensive brand. I'm not sure of the exact price of this particular model, it's a few years old, but the latest version of it costs about $25,000. Now to the point of this post. I could see the circuit boards of the passive filters both from above and below. From above they looked just fine, expensive components in a well-ordered fashion. But from below they were horrifying. They were obviously hand-soldered, which might be a edge in marketing. But I'd say that 80% of the solder joints were poorly made. I've done a lot of soldering. Many years. I have not made such a sloppy job since I was 14 or maybe even 13. There were three categories; too much solder (large spherical blobs), too little solder (almost none), even joints with deep holes. All were shiny, though. So they were probably ok. But wave soldering or skilled personnel would have made them almost perfect, it's really not that difficult. A speaker is prone to vibration (cough). It also has high currents running through it. A bad joint might affect the sound, even stop it completely. A bad joint might even get hot enough to start a fire. I've never heard of that, but still. This particular brand has a 10 year warranty, so obviously this isn't a problem for them. Anyway, I'm baffled. (Pun intended.) Ah yes, that's true. One should look at a real one. But I suppose the point of these units would be to actually make people impressed with their products. Imagine the IKEA experience at a BMW reseller. Cardboard engine and bean sacks for seats. It's just a demo, the production model is better equipped. Sell much? :-) Well, I might be unfair. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Cut your speakers in half!
Yes, but they have a wide range of speakers, most of them cheaper but perhaps a third are even more expensive. They must sell thousands of speakers every year, and they all have passive filters. Plenty of opportunity to excel in soldering, it's not difficult. And if they make a lousy job with these simple things, how can you trust them to pay better attention to the difficult matters? The exterior finish is excellent, but for $25,000 I'd expect more. I wonder how many of these filters that are rejected in quality control. We invented the scientific principle 400 years ago. (But perhaps the chinese actually invented it much earlier? They were really good mathematicians 6,000 years ago, I think. Western history books seldom include their history.) I find it hard to believe that suddenly a mutation that allowed scientific thinking rapidly spread over the world at that time. We must have been able to think like that a long, long time, even if we didn't do that on a great scale. Has any proof ever been produced that says that we have changed at all for thousands of years? Since agriculture was invented 11,000 years ago we have adapted to new food. But our mental capacity? Since the 1960s (IIRC) we have started developing better concentration skills (bigger working memory), because of the increasing amount of information we are exposed to. That is said to translate directly to abstract intelligence. So according to neurocognition scientists, humans get more intelligent by the decade, because of our environment. This curve has a name, which I have forgotten. But did this perhaps already start 400 years ago? If so, could it have been the greater cities with more impressions, the invention of the printing press and possibly time to read because of better living conditions in general (if they were actually improved)? ralphpnj wrote: So gee how is that the Egyptians managed to build those pyramids? There is an overwhelming bias in today's world that mankind lived in the dark ages until Steve Jobs appeared on earth to save us mere mortals (I'm exaggerating :)). Seriously there is a strong bias in favor of modern science which only serves to discredit the very real scientific achievements and discoveries that were made and that were well known prior to The Dark Ages. For example the concept of logarithms was well known hundreds of years ago (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logarithm#History). In particular this bias runs strongly in favor of electronics and computer science and against what I would Newtonian science, i.e. the everyday physical world. Of course my feelings on this issue are also very biased by the fact that I am a mechanical engineer. Funny thing is when one needs to dig a hole a simply shovel works a whole lot better than an iPhone app. I'm not trying to be a Luddite but only to point out that much of the foundation for today's modern marvels was laid many, many years ago. We actually agree. Perhaps I was unclear. I'll try again. Science is a method that has to be learned. In general people can actually plan things and that must be one of our few advanteges on this harsh earth. But some individuals have always been really good at that they are genetically equipped with a sizable working memory, greater than the average. It can also be trained. It enables deeper, more abstract thinking, which is needed to think logically, plan ahead etc. Everybody can't just mimic each other, nothing new would ever be invented. We have made a great many inventions over the time, not just fire and baking, which may have been found out in the wild and mimiced. Also very important ideas like money, credit, insurance etc, that are not found in nature. Not to mention hunting methods, building methods and materials etc. Our forefathers may not have used the precise scientific method, but they could think. However, at some point in time we might have reached a critical mass, where the average intelligence enabled us to make our living conditions significally better? It could perhaps happen because people started living in larger communities. Especially when compared to the nonlinearities introduced by the speakers and the listening room. They are several orders of magnitude apart. Several. I bought the Transporter over the internet immediately after it first came out. There was no way of hearing or even seeing it in beforehand. I had never heard of Slimserver, but it seemed very versatile. The hardware with all the connections also seemed very versatile. The large display was just what I wanted. And finally, the measurements were good enough to make it a safe purchase. The Duet was never in question, as I lusted for the Transporter's display and hardware versatility. The Touch wasn't available at that time, but if it had been I just might have bought that instead. I consider this purchase one of my best ever. LMS (Slimserver) turned out to be very powerful, top class. I can even use it for DRC, which I do. The display is fabulous. I use or have used all of the connections except the RS232. If I went shopping today I could have the same performance for half the price. And the display is not as important nowadays with all the apps, but I still prefer using it because it's always where it's supposed to be and it never has to be charged. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is anybody sick of the recent spate of threads?
jkeny wrote: That's the point - most people look at reviews (both users mag reviews) decide on what is worth their time auditioning for themselves. They make up their own minds of the audibility of the device in their system under a stress free listening environment - they prove it to themselves which is all that matters to them. The offer of free home trials money back returns low prices greatly facilitates this for most sensible people. Ah, we have now reached the real focal point. How well does cosy testing in our own homes work? Is there possibly an alternative? Most people want the most bang for the bucks. The very wealthy may not care about the bucks, but everybody cares about getting the most bang. So how do we decide what best enhances the sound quality or other part of the listening experience? How do we decide what to spend our money on and what gives the biggest effect at this point? How do we go from wanting to getting? There are many possible pitfalls of psychological nature in play in testing. These are well established in the scientific community. One of them is that we hear with both our ears and our brain. And we can't turn off either one, both are always on. When the brain is highly involved, anything might happen. For instance, that makes us susceptiple to hearing what we want to hear. I can't list all the problems, but here is a great video that exemplifies some of them, Ethan Winer's Audio Myths Workshop (oldie but goldie). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYTlN6wjcvQ This is a very informative video with actual scientists and it's also humorous. I recommend checking out at least the first ten minutes, Poppy Crum is hilarious (05:15-09:30). But the rest of the hour is also great. After seeing that video and contemplating a bit, one may not see sighted testing as the best tool available to humans. Reviewers are also humans, so they suffer from the same problems as the rest of us, which makes also reviews a blunt instrument. A safer way of acquiring good information would be to look for published measurements and formal tests, something substancial, anything that contains hard facts. Then we have at least a little part of an objective truth. That gives us a much better basis for our decisions. After all, our goal is to get the most bang, and our best bet is to find already known hard facts. Without something stable to lean on, we might stumble. It's quite easy to compare the quality of two pictures on a table in front of you or to compare two existing modes on a TV by switching rapidly between them. However audio is different. The auditory memory is short, fragile and easily exhaustible. The listening experience is also influenced by your mood etc. Therefore testing is much harder to conduct properly. Well, the manufacturer is working on measurements, I believe but there is another way to evaluate a device - listen to it :) A fact is a fact is a fact. However. Not all facts are relevant. Actually most facts are irrelevant to any specific topic. Perhaps that's what you mean. Yet another however. Right now there are precisely zero facts in this discussion. Generally speaking any fact would enable us to discuss and criticize the relevance of that fact. Someone would immediately devise a(nother) test, which then could be performed and discussed. Naturally, starting off with a well-thought-out measurement procedure often saves time and effort. While I'm certain that any fact and any measurement metod would be bashed, it would form a basis for discussion. At the moment we lack that completely. But in this particular case what ultimately matters is if an input change results in an output change. With output I mean the output of the DAC. So it's easy to devise a well-thought-out test. Noone can successfully argue against the validity of a null test. If the difference is undetectable then the input change is of no consequence and therefore also of no interest. If the difference is detectable but small enough, it will not be humanly possible to hear. If it's reasonably sized, the device under test is of value. At this point I cannot know whether this contraption works, but right now this goes for everybody here. Perhaps even for the manufacturer. There are dedicated hardware signal processing/measuring devices available, which for instance can subtract signals. The measurements then form the basis for consumer information. Nothing academic about that. jkeny wrote: Anyway, there is no such thing as a complete null so what null do you think is below audibility? Regarding good enough, I don't believe I have ever seen a serious study which concludes that -120dB is a problem in itself. This discussion is so far completely void of hard facts. It would be helpful if someone, *anyone*, would measure the device, *any measurement at all*, and then *publish *it. That way this would turn into a discussion based on (at least some) facts. We could then stepwise take it further with possibly other measurements. But please remember that the burden of proof, from a purely logical standpoint, is on the *manufacturer*. The manufacturer is the one making claims. So the logical step would be for the manufacturer to measure and publish. I would actually have paid a lot for a commercial solution to get this result, but as I didn't know the power of DRC (and I'm also cheap), I figured I'd try free software first. Sometimes you're just lucky! The bottom range would otherwise be very difficult to fix without large bass traps, which is not an option here. Archimago wrote: Likewise, although not to +/-1dB, more like +/-3 dB for me, the difference is remarkable. I already have a couple of side panels to tame 1st reflections from glass in-wall storage for my CD/Blu-rays/headphones/etc. which made a difference with reverberation time in the mid-range. Also have my LP collection to the back to act as scatter. But those panels would do nothing with bass unevenness. To achieve what was doable with DRC I suspect would have been very costly and not particularly esthetically pleasing to most rooms! I really should have some panels too, mainly behind my head (small room), but I try to manage without. Having a good bookshelf, a decent carpet and fluffy furniture helps. Though I'm sure it would be very beneficial behind me, I will never ever resort to 'audiophile art'! :-) Are your panels large or are they just to fix the sweet spot? Do they help outside it? Is it a big improvement? Archimago wrote: Another thing that's great with DRC FIR filters is the ability to do time-domain corrections. This definitely has improved soundstage and imaging in my room beyond flat frequency response and channel balance. Amen to that. What frequency range do you correct and are you happy with it? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What The Future Of Audio Might Look Like In A Digital World
DRC is the poor man's 'room full of fluffy stuff'. If you have the time, space and funding to build a dedicated listening room with the help of audio engineers going bananas, I presume you don't need DRC at all. But there might be contraints, financial or perhaps estethic. DRC can help a lot, but not all the way. There are different problems in audio with different orders of magnitude. Listening room acoustics is high up on that scale and DRC can help correcting that problem. Much, much more rewarding per monetary unit and time spent than for instance replacing an amplifier with THD 0.005% to one with 0.0005% (which also would be pointless). Another advantage is that in the process one measures and quantifies the sound quality and usually present it in a visual way. After applying a suitable filter you can usually also see the improvement visually. DRC gives audible results, often substantial, but for the skeptic who likes seeing those in numbers, the process has inherent proof. So, why is DRC not everywhere already? As it's possible to automate it, there is no hard reason. At least according to my head, where I live. While fully agreeing, I haven't so far seen or heard of an audiophile spending all of his monthly income on Nordost cables and letting his children starve. ;-) To be serious, I have many times tried to explain the severe logical problems inherent in some popular yet grotesque conspiracy theories, but utterly failed. And these are highly intelligent people with higher educations. I agree with the article, but I also think that mistrusting science can be a kind of belief system in itself. And changing a belief is difficult at best. Arguments fall short where there's no will to even consider another view. How could you with rational arguments change views that aren't based on rationality, but on belief alone? It seems education and science doesn't solve it all. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 4 or 3?
The washers I use with my spikes cost me $12 for 8 pcs, I think, and it seems highly unlikely that they perform worse than gold plated ones. But still, it's hopeless to adjust four spikes, so I believe vibrations are in principal unavoidable. But does it constitute a problem? For some background, I found a paper that uses a smidge of science for an introduction to a bit of the basics of (de)coupling using spikes and (visco)elastic materials 101: www.genesisloudspeakers.com/whitepaper/Genesis_Loudspeaker_Coupling_Decoupling.pdf If I'd buy something from the site mentioned above, I'm afraid I'd get stuff that's been lying around in his garage for 25 years. The material might have hardened in that time span. And I suspect that it's Sorbothane, by the way. Also, I rarely believe what I can't verify by myself, so I'd feel intellectually naked if I used sighted listening tests for evaluation. And it would be truly exhausting to perform any kind of blind listening tests in this case. What to do? The obvious answer is of course to measure the vibrations objectively: au naturel, with felt cushions, when adjusting the spikes, with spikes, with Sorbothane cushions, ... (Almost as exhausting.) There are plenty of apps that measure vibrations, some even in 3D. Perhaps one of them would suffice? For instance: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vibrationmeter https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vrmobilehl=en https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lul.vibration.monitoringhl=en https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.sira.vibrationhl=en Has anybody done this already? I'll see if I can find the time to play a little with all of this. But unfortunately it'll take a while. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Remastered Music, to buy or not to buy (Dumb question)
Some people have problems hearing faint sounds, some have problems with transients, some have problems with both. These are problems that many people experience when they grow older and some even long before that. All of these people would presumably actually *benefit* from the loudness war. They would simply hear more of the music, without the pain during the transients. This is the same principle that makes music with low dynamics more easy to listen to using only tiny computer speakers. Too faint and you can't hear anything for the buzzing fan, too loud overloads the speakers. (Like many others I experience listening fatigue when I listen to music with low dynamics. But I haven't yet developed any hearing problems, I think, so I prefer high dynamics just because I can.) [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 4 or 3?
I have a problem. I'm sure many of you have had, or still have the same one. When I try to trim the four spikes underneath my floorstanding speakers to make them level and stable and hence not prone to vibration, I always rigorously curse the designers who didn't put three spikes there instead or four, which would make the problem moot and also the speakers a little cheaper. Is there any benefit from using four, or are speaker manufacturers just generally rigid and, well, dense? Or are they perhaps all conspiring and doing this for the sole reason of annoying me? Please help my tormented soul and enlighten me! PS Or, to open up Pandora's box, do I even need spikes in the first place? Perhaps they're just remnants from the dark 80s? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 4 or 3?
Ah yes, I actually found this site a few years ago. The audio society Ljudtekniska Sällskapet, which is mentioned, is honourable enough, but I didn't dare purchasing anything. Both 'audiophile' and 'standard' damping feet, both for speakers and CD players. A web site that hasn't changed since about the year 2000, with reviews from 1991. Hm. I smelled a rat. But I like the idea of tuned suspension. When I do my laundry I often admire the double suspension under the washing machines that absorbs almost all of the different vibrational frequencies and amplitudes. Very efficient and very instructive, and yet I never thought of applying that principle to speakers. Also interesting to see the jagged graph of the floor movement with spikes. I'll look into this. It seems like a sound idea and I haven't even had the prospect of a hardware tweak in more than a decade. And the grandchildren of the original seller might still be alive. :-) Perhaps there is another solution out there somewhere, based on the same principle...? I thought it just was about underperforming (which I thought was odd), but I see now that it also is about succeeding. And I must confess I often equate cynisism with realism. An objective component review would indeed be hard with ABX. I have always been suspicious of ABX, as it, from a purely practical standpoint, simply is too difficult to manage. It's almost as hard as doing a doubleblind study on the effects of oil massage. Fugedaboudit. I think a more fruitful way is to measure, measure and measure again. We would perhaps need to develop more methods of testing. For instance some people seem to believe that single test tones are not enough. Maybe they have a point. Well, then develop a different method to investigate that. It's not just about proving things, it's also about explaining why it is a proof to the people that don't have the background to understand it by themselves. And hearing/seeing is believing. Never waste time with subjectivities. Always find hard facts and build on those. Yada yada. (Why do these discussions always come to this?) But I actually believe the optimal testing method is already since long invented; the null test. It's extremely powerful, but more importantly; it's also extremely transparent. Everyone understands it and it's hard to argue that the test is inadequate, when you actually measure the entire audio content of some complex piece of music and compare this to the source. What could possibly be missed? And if you get a difference at the -120dB level, this would be very difficult to hear. It's easily tested, just attenuate a sound in a sound editor by that amount and see if you can hear it with the volume knob unchanged. If you can, then add a masking noise and we're done. By the way, doing a null test with the the entire audio chain would be very unforgiving. There is a reason that we never see distortion figures for speakers, in the way that we do for amps. andy_c wrote: My understanding from reading the paper and Toole's book is that reflections from the front and back walls may not be beneficial for giving the illusion of spaciousness because the reflected components of the sounds in the left and right ears caused by them are highly correlated, while the opposite is true for side wall reflections. My home that I moved into a few years ago is one of those open-plan homes that seem to be popular nowadays. Also, it has hard tile floors on all but the bedrooms and study. So kitchen, dining room, living room and hallway running all the way from front door to back are all hard tile. Floors and ceiling are drywall. When I first moved in, it sounded like a cave, with all sorts of late echoes. In the listening area, I put a large area rug, big squishy leather couches and chair forming a U shape, and hanging decorative rugs on front and back walls (but not the side). This seems to have completely tamed the cave effect in the living room where my system is, but it is still prevalent in the kitchen and dining room, which are dominated by hard surfaces. Next project is multiple subwoofers! That's an interesting aspect of the paper too. Ah. I have it all backwards. The room size and the way it's furnished doesn't really allow for much squishy stuff on the front och back walls, so I have not done anything there. But I've always taken comfort in the fact that at least I have book shelves on the side walls of the room. Perhaps any amount of soft matter at the front or back would be an improvement? Sometimes I see people having a kind of room treatment, a sort of board roughly the size of a newspaper, standing on the floor by the front wall, directly behind the speakers. Do they help much? I use Digital Room Correction and it makes a substantial improvement. But it's very obvious that you can't cheat the laws of physics. Since we're discussing psychoacoustics, perhaps this new knowledge alone will make me less satisfied with the sound of my current setup. I'd like to, but dare not use subwoofers. I have a neighbor with such a contraption and this buildning clearly wasn't constructed with that in mind. I don't want to stress my neighbors more that I already do. And I do. But just for adding to my brainweight, or in case I move house soon (I'm looking), please let me know any good ideas. get.amped wrote: Surprisingly, not all sub-woofers are created equal  I have found that the ones intended for home theater low frequency effects are rarely appropriate for music reproduction. They rumble and shake most impressively, but don't have the same tight, punchy bass that I get from my Quads. There are subs specifically designed for music that provide nice reinforcement in the 30-60Hz range that many monitor/bookshelf sized speakers struggle to reproduce well. Yes, I know there are different kinds, but I have never really given it any thought in this case. I just implicitly assumed it was my annoying neighbor's choice of music, or whatever one should call that roaring stuff. But actually, when I think about it, he seems to use his sub mostly for gaming, so it's probably safe to assume that it's one of the cheaper and shakier varieties. And explosions are seldom particularly musical. I have decent floorstanders, which go down to 30 Hz, but they could be more controlled at the bottom end. That probably mostly depends on room modes, speaker placement and so on. But still. It would be interesting to try out a high class sub, or perhaps even multiple ones, tuned to perfection for precisely my livingroom. Hmm. Something to consider for my future (bigger and hopefully more soundproof) apartment. andy_c wrote: One good source of information about psychoacoustics and how it relates to sound reproduction can be found... Ooo, this was very interesting! According to this paper, reflections are neutral or benign in small rooms (except in the LF range). Who knew? Adaptation seems to be powerful. Roughly speaking; before adaptation the room is the significant factor and the loudspeaker isn't, and vice versa. Perhaps this is the most important factor in the infamous breaking-in of speakers? (Not cables or such, that falls into the category of in dire need of heavy medication.) And yes, I know that one common explanation is the subtle untightening of screws due to vibrations, which doesn't seem unlikely. It really puts some of common audiophile knowledge in perspective. Both pure myths but also expert advice from, for instance, loadspeaker manufacturers. Physical models of wave propagation don't seem to be enough, we simply don't hear precisely what is measured. The physical models so far only concern what reaches the ear drums (or possibly the end of the cochlear nerve), we are not yet able to measure the impact of the extensive processing happening in our minds during the act of hearing. Granted, this is not a new concept at all, but at least I haven't previously had a glimpse of the magnitude of importance. I have so far only read half of the paper and I'm sure more revelations are to come. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Happy thoughts

Does anyone have any thought-provoking psychoacoustic phenomena to share? I'll go first. Perhaps you already know of them, but they were unknown to me.
