I'd love to hear what you think of them, I've fancied a pair of the
ADM9T's with a Sub, but now having seen these, I'm really intrested in
them. They are a big price hike, so they would have to be a quantum
improvement for me to justify the extra cost. I see that at the moment,
they are made to order, but you can go to ADM to audition them.
If you could post some pictures of these speakers, it would be very
helpful in seeing the quality of finish.

Russell, if you go to the AVI forum, there's a review section where
you'll find reviews by me and several owners including some pictures.
The AVI website also has a nice picture of one with cherry veneer.

In my opinion, these are a very significant advance over the ADM9T+sub.
However, there is also a new and improved version of the ADM9T available
(with a new woofer design) which I haven't heard but by all accounts is
also a worthwhile improvement.

Just to let you know what Audioengine replied about the A5+:

Here's some power consumption and sleep function info for the A5+;

Idle: 10W
Mute: 6W
Sleep: 4W

The idle mode would be automatic when no music is playing, the lights
will remain on and solid and nothing needs to be done to resume audio
playback. The mute and sleep mode can be initiated with the remote
control and will reduce power consumption even more when not in use,
these each have there own way of blinking the indicator light to let
you know they are in a deep sleep mode, you would need to use the
remote, or the front panel volume control to bring the set out of these
deep sleep modes to resume playback. It's perfectly fine however to
simply let them Idle when not in use.

The dividing line is that some believes that a sound engineer can use

And of-course check with larger main monitors etc.

auratones are used for a couple of purposes.

often run as a single speaker, in mono...

the reason being if your mixes sound amazing in mono, they will sound
INCREDIBLE when mixed to stereo. so often we check things in mono just
to see. getting things mono compatible is crucial for a good mix.

also... auratones are very good at mimicing the sound/response of
consumer equipment.. so if we get things sounding great on
these..again, they are gonna be superb on real speakers

:-/ why not make it soud as good as it can, to present the music as
good as possible ?
My acoustic is a bit daft , but I rarely owned such speakers looks like
what comes with a 70's compact stereo. me thinks the lowest common
demeanour have moved a bit .
And btw it is a bit like the loudness war ? Why adapt the sound for
consumers that don't care for sound quality at all a very weird
practice ?
Make it sound better on crap stereo owned by people who could not care
less ?
If mixed to sound good on more able speakers we audiophiles would be
happier :) and the others won't notice ( maybe when their cones fall
out of thier speakers )

But mono is needed otherwise nothing would sound good in Radio or
similar equipment

OK, but it its because of SQ, my opinion is that the A5s are not really
good enough to make it worth the effort - unless you turn it all the
way down. For normal use, I'd say the usable volume range on the Touch
allows for quite some flexibility. But it is nice to be able to
physically adjust roughly for low/medium/high volumes, so if they are
totally out of reach, I can see the point.

I stand corrected. The Sleep feature is controlled from the remote.
There MAY be an auto sleep mode also, but I
don't see it at glance. Seems like a small matter. You needed a
Remote. Use it to put 'em to sleep! :)

The website is not clear about the auto feature, that's why I'd prefer
some owner confirmed how the sleep mode works.
As to the manual sleep on the remote - I don't want to look for a
second remote to put the speakers on or off whilst controlling the
touch from my android. Or remember to put them off when I finish. The
remote is needed for occasional volume adjustment. Seems petty but
that's the convenient way I'm used to do it (with my crappy JBL
speakers)

If the Auto Sleep function were in fact, no longer a part of the new
A5+...I'd wager that it was because people were alarmed by the POP
you'd hear when the speakers snoozed off...

To me, it seems like small potatoes. Six of one...Half-Dozen of the
other. Idle current consumption (it IS specified) is menial, and
probably about the same as a Kid's nightlight. Probably a lot less
than the sum total of all the wall-warts that we have plugged in around
the house idly sipping electricity.

I thought the A5's were an extraordinarly good value, and mostly found
the Auto Sleep to be a nuisance. When I'm done listeningI just
turn everything off.Been doing it that way with things for years.
:)

Get yourself some A5+s. Audioengine has a very liberal Money Back
guarantee (30 days, so there's nothing to lose!

Spend an evening or two getting 'em set up just-so in your room...same
as you would do with a $1000 speaker, and you will likely get $1000
speaker sound! The low price tag, and PC speaker moniker undersells

ATC. Some time back, before ATC started producing their own preamps,
they routinely recommended AVI preamps and CD players to partner their
active speakers (and AVI power amps for their passive speakers) in
domestic installations. It was a little bit like the old Linn/Naim
partnership.

The thing that the two companies seem to have in common is that they
are driven by real engineering - there is little or no audiophile
marketing spin in their activities. As a result their products,
although fairly expensive, are actually superb value for money.

I think the AVI derives from the same school as ATC.

My Googling shows up many ATC speaker / AVI amp combinations, and I
think the AVI owner is ex-ATC, or vice-versa.

The main appeal seems to be that they have the benefit of active
technology but in a domestically-acceptable product. All of the others
I look at have a very studio finish. Grey and drab.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations

2009-01-05 Thread turbot fiend

Hi All.

First post here..

I have recently replaced my MF XRay CD player BW CDN1T, Audio Lab 8000
pre/power combo and gone the SB/FLACS/Active speaker route. That's my
calibration point. I have also enjoyed NAIM of late and was so, so
close to going the SuperNait/BW 805s route, also with Squeeze box.
(only my wifes prudence, and the thought of our two year old with
little cone crunching fingers prevented this)

All of a sudden running modestly priced active speakers with minimal
wiring/additional remotes/ancilary boxes, became far more appealing.

So instead I now run a Tranquil WHS feeding mixture of FLACs and 320s
to an SB classic into A2s in kitchen; and a SB Duet into A5s plus a new
Velodyne SPL 800 Ultra sub in my lounge. Audiophile quality? Depends
on your definition. The sound is very pleasing to most who have
auditioned and praised in comparison with my previous set ups. I am
experimenting with A5 positioning, toe-in and tilt, but they punch and
charm well above their price band in my lounge with a mixture of music
genres. The velodyne sub, with built in EQ has integrated very well
and 'disappeared' into the music at saem time really adding punch and
timbre when appropriate (this box is worth a post on it's own).

But, I (plus wife) have been really enjoying listening to music again
and rediscovering loads of old stuff, plus new stuff too. 'No-Man'
Schoolyard Ghosts, stuns; Led Zepp rocks; Grieg soars; Sinatra croons.

Isn't that what it is about?

For wife factor, the simple minimal installation of active speakers is
a winner - we have cable tidy Q stands, two white A5s, one power lead,
and that's it. The Velodyne is sort of discreet, and all leads drop
down into celler below through floor boards.

The A2s are as described elsewhere -actually very sweet sounding and
pleasing. Exceptional value too.

Upgrade bug will doubtless call and the AVI 9is seem worth auditioning
as do the Dynaudio MC15 active speakers. I may experiment with other
DACs.

Powered speakers are deffo not just for the near field listening
experience or computer games. Audiophile or not, I think they can give
many 'true HiFi' component multi-box systems a very good run for the
money. And for £200 the Audioengine A5s offer an amazing
price/performance proposition that the press reviews hinted at.

Thanks for reading.

Not necessarily. Pro active speakers come in all shapes and sizes.
Cheap ones tend to be nearfield, of course - accurate speakers that can
fill a room cost proper money.

The aforementioned ATC is fundamentally a pro audio company - they were
in studios for ages before they branched out into the domestic market.

I second the suggestions for the AVI ADM9.1. Here's an online review:

Another good option is the Acoustic Energy AE22-04 actives. See here:
http://www.acoustic-energy-pro.com/professional-speaker-range/index.asp.
I haven't heard them myself, but they've been receiving good reviews in
numerous hi-fi magazines.

If you are willing the DIY route I can highly recommend the Linkwitz
Lab's fully active speakers (see http://www.linkwitzlab.com/). I've
built both the Pluto+ and the Orion+ speakers. The Orion+ speakers are
the best sounding speakers I've heard in my system so far.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations

2008-12-23 Thread TooSteep

There have been a couple of Pro Audio suggestions already - Mackie,
DynAudio - and I'd like to second them. I have found that Pro Audio
gear provides quality construction, great value, and superb sound (and
as a bonus, you get to hear the song just as the recording and
mastering engineers heard it).

In the value range (comparable to the A2 price) you can consider the
Edirol MA-15D powered speakers. At higher prices, consider both the
DynAudio and Mackies. If you head over to GearSluts, you'll find a lot
of pro recording engineers really like the Adam Audio and Genelec
lines, although they are more expensive again.

The great thing about Pro Audio is you are paying for sound quality and
durability - not aesthetics and voodoo marketing.

I think the fact that Paradigm bailed on this market niche says a lot.
They have clearly figured out a way to manufacture quality equipment in
North America at a variety of price points.

Perhaps they made the push toward active speakers prematurely, but it
still really hurts not to have a market leader putting product on the
shelves to see, hear and touch.

I'm glad someone mentioned ATC here. It would be nice to see them
offer some more affordable products (and something a bit smaller in
scale) - but as with AVI they're not the easiest things to find for an
audition in many parts of North America.

Many people seem to happy with the performance of these products - but
why do so many of them have to be eyesores? I understand that many of
them are designed for near-field studio use - but one would think that
having attractive products would make the studio a more pleasant place
to work.

The Audioengine A2s in my daughter's room have beautifully designed and
constructed cabinets - but they would be much less conspicuous with
grilles - which aren't even offered as an option to the best of by
knowledge. I would love to see more loudspeaker manufacturers bring
traditional looking, affordable active monitors to the market. I know
Paradigm produced an active line years ago that critics seemed to love,
but they dropped the line shortly thereafter - presumably due to
lackluster sales.

Can anyone recommend a line of traditional looking small active
monitors - with quality cabinetry and no gaudy lights, switches, etc on
the front panel? Couldn't they expand their market a bit by simply
offering optional grilles?

Separate power cord to each speaker even in the smallest model ! not

I also have a pair of Swans M-200's (based on a recommendation from this
forum some time ago). They're serving as bedroom speakers right now,
hooked up to a Tivo and an SB2. Sound quality is (IMHO) excellent for
the price, and the build quality is also pretty amazing. Highly
recommended if you can find a pair (I think they've been discontinued
for a while).

Both threads talk about the A2. The only person to own a pair of A5s

Compared to the A5s, it comes down to the room size and how much
separation is available in the listening position and how far away one
is from the listening position. In a small to medium room with a close
listening position, the Boom beats the A5s fairly easily. Add a
sub-woofer in a medium to large room and the Boom will give the A5s a
 good run for the money.

The key there is close listening position, and in the inlukely case
you want to hold your head 2 feet in front of the Boom for extended
 listening sessions.

I also would say that the message above was written with some
overenthusiasm around the launch of the Boom, which also saw threads in
this very forum stating the Boom was audiophile - in which case the A5
can make easily the same claim.

I love the 2 Booms I own, but one -which I unfairly located in a medium
sized room, our homegym- benefitted from hooking up a subwoofer (and I
am not fan of bass, the subwoofer's volume dial is turned to 1 on a
10-scale) - but there is no way I would have ever considerd the Boom an
alternative when I had to move away to an apartment for 1 year and *had*
to put together a good system, because I can not live without good
music. An SB3 with a pair of A5s kep me company for that year and
allowed me to truly thoroughly enjoy my music collection far away from
home. It never failed to impress people that lstened to it and allowed
them to fully immerse themselves in music. It is true the A5s are a tad
boomy with the bass if one does not position them right, but a little
too much is always better than decidedly too little, which would the
the Booms problem for any serious listening when it comes to bass. As
the poster that wrote the one and only comparison with A5s in the 2
 threads you provided stated:

.. I think it comes down to better sound for less total dollars ..

Or let us hear another A5 opinion from a satisfied owner:

.. I paid 170 EURO for the set. And at that price I think that it
would be, at least difficult, to find a match (active or passive w.
amp). Sound quality wise I'd recommend them for all kinds of background
music. .. So in the end I'm keeping mine based on a combination of
price, planned usage, sound quality. ..

 Oh, that was you in

Hm. Obviously something sored you on Audioengines. I find your analysis
of the past balanced, by the way - but what you have written in this
thread shows that you are indeed irrationally negatively biased for
whatever reason. Your personal history with whatever brand is your
 right, I guess.

Back to the original poster: I, and many -included the person that in
this thread attacks the A5 solution- can recommend the A5s as a great
solution at the price. It is not audiophile, but it comes very close at
a price that not too long ago would have been unthinkable. And the Boom
does not change that. The Boom is great as a sattelite that sounds
clean - but it lacks the depth, stereo separation and bass to provide
for long lsitening sessions in front of it, in my opinion. It is great
for backgound music, but far more limited for serious dedicated
listening than an SB3 with a pair of A5s would be.

In that review I state that they are not even comparable to entry
level stereo systems NAD, Denon, BW etc. which is exactly the kind of
stuff that the A5 price will get you on the 2. hand marked. In fact I
classify them as computer speakers-like stuff, and use wording like
mediocre, not up to par, mess up etc. In fact everything I said
in that post, almost word by word, is exactly what I've been trying to
get thru in this thread.

The only thing that's changed is that I have now heard the Fostex 0.4
and they sound better. This proves that its possible to do better; even
if you don't believe in getting used gear sold by, in many cases, people
just like ourselves.

As I stated I paid only 170 euro and kept them based on several
parameters, only one of which had to do with sound quality. In other
words, a compromise as far as the sound quality parameter is concerned.
This would be the kind of compromise I spoke of in my first post in this

negative. I'm providing complementary and additional comments to the
merits of the A5's. The pros certainly seems well covered, and my posts
reflects the cons. That's it.

My recommendation on the A5, then and now, is to be interpreted modulo
other parameters than sound quality.

Anyway, OP I urge you to post if you have questions or opinions that

Hi George,

Yes I returned the Dynaudios after both the retailer and then Dynaudio
themselves, told me the hiss from the tweeters was normal. Apparently
it results from having no volume control on the speaker unit (according
to Dynaudio). Certainly not happening from anything further up the
signal chain. This result was very disappointing to me, as I enjoyed
the sound of the Dynaudios very much - but in the end I just cannot
stand hiss, it just drives me nuts over time.

The Quads have no hiss, and sound very nice indeed - different from the
Dynaudios (and much better looking). But neither the Quads nor the
Dynaudios can hold a candle to the sound quality of a good set of
audiophile speakers with a good separate amp - not even close. Keep
the powered monitors when their convenience outweighs the sound quality
difference - this is my advice to anybody considering them! :)

bookshelf format speakers and also a physically smaller amp.

We touched a nerve for bhaagensen. We seemed to have blasphemed by
using the word audiophile in vain.

A pair of big floorstanders for $ 86 is not likely to have rigid
cabinets free of audible resonances. If your budget is quite limited,
stick with physically small speakers; it is much easier to get an
acceptably rigid cabinet when the walls are not large in size.

The A5s have very well built cabinets. When you rap them with your
knuckles, you don't hear ringing or any flexing in the side walls of
the cabinet. That is the sort of thing you pay real money to get in
stand mounted monitors.

I have 3-way speakers with active crossovers and 6 channels of
amplification in my library. They are clearly better than the A5s in
most respects but the A5s are still very enjoyable to listen to.

ShutterShock, if you like what the A2s provide, you should find the A5s
to be even better. If on the other hand, you found the A2s fatally
lacking in clarity, imaging, centering, precision, frequency response,
tightness in bass etc., then you should definitely consider
bhaagensen's $ 86 audiophile speakers. There can be no discussion.

If you are willing to spend $ 600 or $ 1000 on speaker + amp (together
or separately), you can probably do better than A5s. But not every
combination in that price range will be better.

Interesting. I was going to connect them to my Transporter/Headphone

Not at all, I'm just trying to provide some advice for the OP who wants
good room filling speakers in the price range of the A5. If that is the
goal, the A5's are not best choice.

No arguing that. I guess if you're not familiar with Dali, then there
is nothing I can do to convince you that they way better than the A5's.
But I urge you to check out the second hand market for speakers you
might now and like with 5-10 years on their back. You might be
surprised at what you can get: Whardales, BW, Dynaudio, Dali, etc. are
dirt cheap.

The A5s have very well built cabinets. When you rap them with your
knuckles, you don't hear ringing or any flexing in the side walls of
 the cabinet.

That's a flawed argument. Yes, if they do shake and rattle they're
probably pretty bad. However the opposite case does not give any
guarentees about the sound. Of course the manufacturers are aware of
this pseudo argument and can easily build cabinents which are sturdy
and passes the knuckle test; even I can (almost) do that.

the A5s are still very enjoyable to listen to.

I never said they weren' t. I think I used the wording pleasant
though.

 bhaagensen's $ 86 audiophile speakers.

I never mentioned the word audiophile in relation to the Dali's. And
FYI they retailed at ~600USD 6 years ago.

OP: If you go ahead and get the A5's I'm sure you might be happy with
them. However if you are willing to spend some time and energy
listening to systems consisting of an integrated amp + speakers with
about 5-10 years on their back, then I am convinced that you can find
something that sounds much better than the A5.

Your logic is what's flawed. You don't seem to understand the
difference between a necessary condition and a sufficient condition. I
described one aspect of a speaker' design where the A5s were well done.
I did not make a statement that that was the only measure of a good
speaker.

You never want a cabinet to produce sound separate from what the
drivers and ports produce. Making rigid cabinets is the usual way to
minimize colorations from cabinets. Minimizing colorations is a
necessary condition if you want stuff like clarity, imaging,
centering, precision, freqnency response, tightness in bass.

Your essential point about the dali speakers and a NAD amp seems to be
that you can buy used components for less than they cost new and get
more value. A valid point.

It is a great time to be an aspiring audiophile - I for one will nod

As to used gear - heck yes. But there is also real risk in buying audio

mostly listen in the near field (3' away from the speakers.) I
sometimes listen from farther away or from the next room. I think they
are very enjoyable and a great bargain.

Some suggestions:

- A5s have a rear port. They need to be at least 4 away from the wall
behind them. (More distance might be better. Right now, placing mine 4
from the rear wall is convenient.) Bass will be too heavy and boomy if
they are too close to the rear wall.

- The left A5 has a volume control on the front and the on-off switch
on the back. It is convenient to leave the A5s on and to control
volume with the knob on the left A5.

- A5s have auto-sensing to let them go into a low power mode after they
have been idle for a few minutes. The auto-sensing works better if the
input level is high. So set the volume in the source to a high level
and use the A5 volume control to reduce the level.

- The auto-sensing doesn't work instantly. A fraction of a second of
music is not audible when the A5s wait up after being in low-power
mode. If this is a show-stopper for you, the A5s may not be the right
choice.

- Like most speakers, the A5s frequency response varies depending on
your position relative to the tweeter axis. be prepared to place them
higher or lower to get best results. (or tilt them.)

Well, since we're in the audiophile forum here we go... The A5's are not
audiophile, and not so by far. Why so? Because they don't possess any
audiophile characteristics. They fail miserably on stuff like clarity,
imaging, centering, precision, freqnency response, tightness in bass
etc. Well OK, they can play loud, but only for short periods of time
before the thermal protection kicks in.

What they are is a competitive compromise. They relatively pleasant to
listen to, being a one, OK two box, solution they are quite compact,
they're not that ugly, they're not that expensive, and they can play
loud and in doing so poor out plenty of bass.

However if your going for audiophile you can certainly get better stuff
for about the same money. One way to do this is to sacrifice some of the
ompf and pure spl. That will put you in the marked for something like
the smallest Fostex which are more audiophile, but in many ways not as
impressive. Or you could go for something used. For that kind of money
you could get some OK bookshelf speakers and an integrated amp which
would easily dance around the table with the A5's. Of course its not as
compact and used gear in that price range may have some bumps and
scratches, but it'll sound better for sure. Or you could get some used
active speakers, but where I live those don't seem to come up very
often.

My 2c etc.

I totally disagree. If there is one thing the A5s do NOT do well is to
play very loud. They are NOT designed for boy rocker types.

I do have an audiophile main system. I can still totally enjoy
lsitening to usic on the A5s - they undoubteldy do deliver true
audiophile qualities. They do provide good staguing and depth, and very
 good clarity and transparency.

I truly think you are merely allowing their price tag to prevent you
from lsitening to them with an open mind. You can obviously not expect
to listen to the same quality levels you'd get out of a $7,000-plus and
well matched system (heavens know I have listened to more expensive
systems that are actually less audiophule than an SB3 hooked up to a
pair of A5s, unfortunately). But you are utterly overstating the
limitations of the A5, the simply fact is that they do sound like
something that 5 years ago would have commanded over 5 times their
price tag in an audiophile shop.

as stated often before, the A5s represent one of the most unique
audiophile level price-value propositions out there. the sound quality
is beyond amazing for a $400 speaker. there are some others out there
that are potentially just as great, but they all seem to cost a bit
more. the nht M00 wiyth the matching NYT subqoofer also sound very
sweep, but the combo runs over $600 and i find it decidedly less
 musical.

and i am not sure what happened to acoustic energey, they had a set
called the Aego M that was also mindblwoing at the price, i have it at
work. but people who tried buying it these days tell me it's become
 impossible to find.

Since we are in a Logitech forum, I'd also like to put a good word in
for the
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/231cl=us,en

Audiopjile they aren't, but they are very musical PC speakers that
sound amazing for their below $200 price tag, and provide very clear
sound if one sets the subwoo up right. Logitech is doing very
disruptive things.

I for one predict that in less than 10 years we will get better sound
quality out of DSP controlled power 2.1 systems than we have from our
beloved traditional stereo setups, at a fraction of the price. I look
at it with a tear in one eye, and great expectations on the other side.
It is an exciting time to love music and its delivery through a balanced
audio system.

Classic?... Just wondering about room-filling alternatives...

For a room filling alternative, you might try a pair of Quad 12L2
Active speakers - 'Here's an audiogon link to a good priced new pair of
them.'

I personally haven't found any active monitors yet that are as
audiophile as a separate amp/speakers set, but these particular Quads
are closer than most IMO...

What about something from dynaudio accoustics? These are near to
mid-field -- maybe big enough to fill a small room:

(I am considering a pair of BM 6A MkII for my desktop.)

It's not about the A5's being cheap. The point is that it is a piece
of cake to find much better stuff at the same price. You might have to
go with used stuff, but if sound-quality is the target, then that will
be the best solution.

It took me 5 min. to find the following. A pair of Dali 450 (which are
excelent, I have owned a pair), here listed at ~86USD

http://www.dba.dk/asp/soegning/detail.asp?annonceid=57302491

Pair it with e.g. this NAD 317 here availble at ~170USD and it WILL
most certainly beat the crap out of the A5's.

http://www.dba.dk/asp/soegning/detail.asp?annonceid=57076692

This is orders of magnitutes better than the A5's, there is no
discussing that.

Also search on these very forums for comparisons of the audioengines and
the boom. I think you will find that most grade the boom as sounding
better. And Its about the same price and does a whole lot more. The
audioengines are not anything special sound quality wise. They are nice
and competitive as such, but thats it.
