Russell, if you go to the AVI forum, there's a review section where you'll find reviews by me and several owners including some pictures. The AVI website also has a nice picture of one with cherry veneer. In my opinion, these are a very significant advance over the ADM9T+sub. However, there is also a new and improved version of the ADM9T available (with a new woofer design) which I haven't heard but by all accounts is also a worthwhile improvement. OK, but it its because of SQ, my opinion is that the A5s are not really good enough to make it worth the effort - unless you turn it all the way down. For normal use, I'd say the usable volume range on the Touch allows for quite some flexibility. But it is nice to be able to physically adjust roughly for low/medium/high volumes, so if they are totally out of reach, I can see the point. -- bhaagensen bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54559 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations
Hi All. First post here.. I have recently replaced my MF XRay CD player BW CDN1T, Audio Lab 8000 pre/power combo and gone the SB/FLACS/Active speaker route. That's my calibration point. I have also enjoyed NAIM of late and was so, so close to going the SuperNait/BW 805s route, also with Squeeze box. (only my wifes prudence, and the thought of our two year old with little cone crunching fingers prevented this) All of a sudden running modestly priced active speakers with minimal wiring/additional remotes/ancilary boxes, became far more appealing. So instead I now run a Tranquil WHS feeding mixture of FLACs and 320s to an SB classic into A2s in kitchen; and a SB Duet into A5s plus a new Velodyne SPL 800 Ultra sub in my lounge. Audiophile quality? Depends on your definition. The sound is very pleasing to most who have auditioned and praised in comparison with my previous set ups. I am experimenting with A5 positioning, toe-in and tilt, but they punch and charm well above their price band in my lounge with a mixture of music genres. The velodyne sub, with built in EQ has integrated very well and 'disappeared' into the music at saem time really adding punch and timbre when appropriate (this box is worth a post on it's own). But, I (plus wife) have been really enjoying listening to music again and rediscovering loads of old stuff, plus new stuff too. 'No-Man' Schoolyard Ghosts, stuns; Led Zepp rocks; Grieg soars; Sinatra croons. Isn't that what it is about? For wife factor, the simple minimal installation of active speakers is a winner - we have cable tidy Q stands, two white A5s, one power lead, and that's it. The Velodyne is sort of discreet, and all leads drop down into celler below through floor boards. The A2s are as described elsewhere -actually very sweet sounding and pleasing. Exceptional value too. Upgrade bug will doubtless call and the AVI 9is seem worth auditioning as do the Dynaudio MC15 active speakers. I may experiment with other DACs. Powered speakers are deffo not just for the near field listening experience or computer games. Audiophile or not, I think they can give many 'true HiFi' component multi-box systems a very good run for the money. And for £200 the Audioengine A5s offer an amazing price/performance proposition that the press reviews hinted at. Thanks for reading. -- turbot fiend turbot fiend's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22691 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54559 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I second the suggestions for the AVI ADM9.1. Here's an online review: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/avi-adm-9-1-review. Another good option is the Acoustic Energy AE22-04 actives. See here: http://www.acoustic-energy-pro.com/professional-speaker-range/index.asp. I haven't heard them myself, but they've been receiving good reviews in numerous hi-fi magazines. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations
There have been a couple of Pro Audio suggestions already - Mackie, DynAudio - and I'd like to second them. I have found that Pro Audio gear provides quality construction, great value, and superb sound (and as a bonus, you get to hear the song just as the recording and mastering engineers heard it). In the value range (comparable to the A2 price) you can consider the Edirol MA-15D powered speakers. At higher prices, consider both the DynAudio and Mackies. If you head over to GearSluts, you'll find a lot of pro recording engineers really like the Adam Audio and Genelec lines, although they are more expensive again. The great thing about Pro Audio is you are paying for sound quality and durability - not aesthetics and voodoo marketing. -- TooSteep TooSteep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16066 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54559 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I think the fact that Paradigm bailed on this market niche says a lot. They have clearly figured out a way to manufacture quality equipment in North America at a variety of price points. Perhaps they made the push toward active speakers prematurely, but it still really hurts not to have a market leader putting product on the shelves to see, hear and touch. Many people seem to happy with the performance of these products - but why do so many of them have to be eyesores? I understand that many of them are designed for near-field studio use - but one would think that having attractive products would make the studio a more pleasant place to work. The Audioengine A2s in my daughter's room have beautifully designed and constructed cabinets - but they would be much less conspicuous with grilles - which aren't even offered as an option to the best of by knowledge. I would love to see more loudspeaker manufacturers bring traditional looking, affordable active monitors to the market. I know Paradigm produced an active line years ago that critics seemed to love, but they dropped the line shortly thereafter - presumably due to lackluster sales. The only person to own a pair of A5s was far more inconclusive, his opinion being Compared to the A5s, it comes down to the room size and how much separation is available in the listening position and how far away one is from the listening position. In a small to medium room with a close listening position, the Boom beats the A5s fairly easily. Add a sub-woofer in a medium to large room and the Boom will give the A5s a good run for the money. The key there is close listening position, and in the inlukely case you want to hold your head 2 feet in front of the Boom for extended listening sessions. I also would say that the message above was written with some overenthusiasm around the launch of the Boom, which also saw threads in this very forum stating the Boom was audiophile - in which case the A5 can make easily the same claim. I love the 2 Booms I own, but one -which I unfairly located in a medium sized room, our homegym- benefitted from hooking up a subwoofer (and I am not fan of bass, the subwoofer's volume dial is turned to 1 on a 10-scale) - but there is no way I would have ever considerd the Boom an alternative when I had to move away to an apartment for 1 year and *had* to put together a good system, because I can not live without good music. An SB3 with a pair of A5s kep me company for that year and allowed me to truly thoroughly enjoy my music collection far away from home. It never failed to impress people that lstened to it and allowed them to fully immerse themselves in music. It is true the A5s are a tad boomy with the bass if one does not position them right, but a little too much is always better than decidedly too little, which would the the Booms problem for any serious listening when it comes to bass. As the poster that wrote the one and only comparison with A5s in the 2 threads you provided stated: .. I think it comes down to better sound for less total dollars .. Or let us hear another A5 opinion from a satisfied owner: .. I paid 170 EURO for the set. And at that price I think that it would be, at least difficult, to find a match (active or passive w. amp). I find your analysis of the past balanced, by the way - but what you have written in this thread shows that you are indeed irrationally negatively biased for whatever reason. Your personal history with whatever brand is your right, I guess. Back to the original poster: I, and many -included the person that in this thread attacks the A5 solution- can recommend the A5s as a great solution at the price. It is not audiophile, but it comes very close at a price that not too long ago would have been unthinkable. And the Boom does not change that. The Boom is great as a sattelite that sounds clean - but it lacks the depth, stereo separation and bass to provide for long lsitening sessions in front of it, in my opinion. It is great for backgound music, but far more limited for serious dedicated listening than an SB3 with a pair of A5s would be. -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54559 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Can you supply any experiences?...Georg Hi George, Yes I returned the Dynaudios after both the retailer and then Dynaudio themselves, told me the hiss from the tweeters was normal. Apparently it results from having no volume control on the speaker unit (according to Dynaudio). Certainly not happening from anything further up the signal chain. This result was very disappointing to me, as I enjoyed the sound of the Dynaudios very much - but in the end I just cannot stand hiss, it just drives me nuts over time. The Quads have no hiss, and sound very nice indeed - different from the Dynaudios (and much better looking). But neither the Quads nor the Dynaudios can hold a candle to the sound quality of a good set of audiophile speakers with a good separate amp - not even close. Keep the powered monitors when their convenience outweighs the sound quality difference - this is my advice to anybody considering them! :) -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54559 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If your budget is quite limited, stick with physically small speakers; it is much easier to get an acceptably rigid cabinet when the walls are not large in size. The A5s have very well built cabinets. When you rap them with your knuckles, you don't hear ringing or any flexing in the side walls of the cabinet. That is the sort of thing you pay real money to get in stand mounted monitors. I have 3-way speakers with active crossovers and 6 channels of amplification in my library. They are clearly better than the A5s in most respects but the A5s are still very enjoyable to listen to. ShutterShock, if you like what the A2s provide, you should find the A5s to be even better. If on the other hand, you found the A2s fatally lacking in clarity, imaging, centering, precision, frequency response, tightness in bass etc., then you should definitely consider bhaagensen's $ 86 audiophile speakers. There can be no discussion. If you are willing to spend $ 600 or $ 1000 on speaker + amp (together or separately), you can probably do better than A5s. But not every combination in that price range will be better. A pair of big floorstanders for $ 86 is not likely to have rigid cabinets free of audible resonances. If your budget is quite limited, stick with physically small speakers; it is much easier to get an acceptably rigid cabinet when the walls are not large in size. No arguing that. I guess if you're not familiar with Dali, then there is nothing I can do to convince you that they way better than the A5's. But I urge you to check out the second hand market for speakers you might now and like with 5-10 years on their back. You might be surprised at what you can get: Whardales, BW, Dynaudio, Dali, etc. are dirt cheap. The A5s have very well built cabinets. When you rap them with your knuckles, you don't hear ringing or any flexing in the side walls of the cabinet. That's a flawed argument. Yes, if they do shake and rattle they're probably pretty bad. You don't seem to understand the difference between a necessary condition and a sufficient condition. I described one aspect of a speaker' design where the A5s were well done. I did not make a statement that that was the only measure of a good speaker. You never want a cabinet to produce sound separate from what the drivers and ports produce. Making rigid cabinets is the usual way to minimize colorations from cabinets. Minimizing colorations is a necessary condition if you want stuff like clarity, imaging, centering, precision, freqnency response, tightness in bass. Your essential point about the dali speakers and a NAD amp seems to be that you can buy used components for less than they cost new and get more value. A valid point. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations
I use in my home office driven by a good quality PCI audio card. I mostly listen in the near field (3' away from the speakers.) I sometimes listen from farther away or from the next room. I think they are very enjoyable and a great bargain. Some suggestions: - A5s have a rear port. They need to be at least 4 away from the wall behind them. (More distance might be better. Right now, placing mine 4 from the rear wall is convenient.) Bass will be too heavy and boomy if they are too close to the rear wall. - The left A5 has a volume control on the front and the on-off switch on the back. It is convenient to leave the A5s on and to control volume with the knob on the left A5. - A5s have auto-sensing to let them go into a low power mode after they have been idle for a few minutes. The auto-sensing works better if the input level is high. So set the volume in the source to a high level and use the A5 volume control to reduce the level. - The auto-sensing doesn't work instantly. A fraction of a second of music is not audible when the A5s wait up after being in low-power mode. If this is a show-stopper for you, the A5s may not be the right choice. - Like most speakers, the A5s frequency response varies depending on your position relative to the tweeter axis. be prepared to place them higher or lower to get best results. (or tilt them.) Well, since we're in the audiophile forum here we go... The A5's are not audiophile, and not so by far. Why so? Because they don't possess any audiophile characteristics. They fail miserably on stuff like clarity, imaging, centering, precision, freqnency response, tightness in bass etc. Well OK, they can play loud, but only for short periods of time before the thermal protection kicks in. What they are is a competitive compromise. They relatively pleasant to listen to, being a one, OK two box, solution they are quite compact, they're not that ugly, they're not that expensive, and they can play loud and in doing so poor out plenty of bass. However if your going for audiophile you can certainly get better stuff for about the same money. One way to do this is to sacrifice some of the ompf and pure spl. That will put you in the marked for something like the smallest Fostex which are more audiophile, but in many ways not as impressive. Or you could go for something used. For that kind of money you could get some OK bookshelf speakers and an integrated amp which would easily dance around the table with the A5's. Of course its not as compact and used gear in that price range may have some bumps and scratches, but it'll sound better for sure. Or you could get some used active speakers, but where I live those don't seem to come up very often.
