[Ontbirds] Great Egret at Carp

2020-03-28 Thread Judy and Peter Hall via ONTBIRDS
This afternoon about 2:00 pm while I was looking over several hundred Canada
Geese (with one Snow Goose) in the flooded Carp River just south of the town of
Carp west of Ottawa, a single Great Egret flew in. It seemed restless and took
short flights to several spots along the river. It only stayed about five
minutes and then flew off out of sight behind some trees. This is the first
Great Egret I have heard about returning to eastern Ontario.
Good birding

[Ontbirds] Great Egret in North York (Toronto)

2020-01-04 Thread Glenn Coady via ONTBIRDS
Ontbirds subscribers,

As I was leaving the Archives of Ontario just now, while travelling south on
Keele Street I noticed a Great Egret flying west to east over Finch Avenue West
likely headed to a nightly roost (possibly G. Ross Lord Park??).

Without a doubt the latest I have seen a Great Egret in the GTA.

Great Egret (Ardea Alba) off Hwy 132 between Kunopaski Rd and Ferguslea Rd

highway around guard rail on mud flat on far side of open water hanging out
with Great Blue Heron, but please be aware this 2 lane highway can be quite
busy on weekends in both directions and there isn’t mush space to pull off.
Has been hanging around for about 5 days but spotting has been erratic. Photos

[Ontbirds] Great Egret , North Bay

2017-04-19 Thread Richard Tafel via ONTBIRDS
A Great Egret in breeding plumage was very surprisingly within the North Bay
area this aft.
It was within the grounds of the Osprey Links golf course (not yet
playable), off Cranberry Drive, just north-west of Callander.
Callander is just south of North Bay, which in turn is 3 1/2 uninterrupted
hours north of Toronto.
A very rare bird for this area!

[Ontbirds] Great Egret, Nonquon Education Centre

The Great Egret, previously reported yesterday, is still present at/near
the Ed Centre. At times it is out in the open in the channels off the
Nonquon River along Old Simcoe and 10th Line. However, probably because of
the cold weather and wind, it hunkers down in the dead cattails and
disappears.

Directions: From hwy 7A in Port Perry, travel north several miles on Old
Simcoe to the bridge over the Nonquon and adjacent to the 10th Line of

[Ontbirds] Great egret and White Pelican at Niagara Falls, ON, Monday June 8th

2015-06-10 Thread Janet Snaith
Hello,

Sorry about the later post, but had a technical difficulty at my end, and my
original post was misdirected.

My first time posting here, but had to note that on Monday June 8th, at
approx. 2:30 pm my daughter and I saw a White Pelican flying from the
Niagara River heading west over the Niagara Parkway at the Niagara Parks
greenhouses, which are just above the falls. Unmistakeable.

Shortly after that we saw a Great Egret at the Dufferin Islands picnic area,
where we had parked. Perhaps a local that I wouldn't be aware of.

All the best,

Janet

[Ontbirds] Great Egret- Lighthouse Cove

2014-12-08 Thread Aaron Charbonneau
Tonight around 4:15pm I observed and photographed a Great Egret at
Lighthouse Cove, in Lakeshore(Tilbury).
It hunkered down for the night at 5:00pm across from the Marina.

Lighthouse Cove is north of Tilbury, on Lake St. Clair. Off Hwy 2, turn
north onto Lighthouse Side Rd. Follow this right, then left and it becomes
Tisdale. As you cross the tracks, turn right onto Mariners Dr. This
follows the Canal, turns left and ends at Harbour Dr. Turn right onto
Harbour and stay Left at the fork. There is an inlet on the left just after
the fork, and I saw it sitting on the tree branches in the water there. It
flew further down the river, and landed in the Marina at the end of Harbour.
This Marina is private property but without entering it was still visible
from the main road. ( I was also able to observe it from the actual
Lighthouse parking lot, looking down the river. )

[Ontbirds] Great Egret (Windsor)

2014-11-22 Thread Kelly Morrissey

The bird I reported to eBird two days ago as a Great Egret (approximate size
of Great Blue Heron, white plumage, yellow bill, blackish legs and feet) is
back again this morning and was there last night as well fishing the east
bank of the Little River just south of the Wyandotte Street East Bridge. I
would do the usual thing and invite viewing from my deck but this morning the
deck is very icy and treacherous. Also, activity on my deck makes it fly
upstream toward the pollution control plant aka sewage treatment facility. It
is that facility, by the way, that warms these waters and makes them
attractive this time of year to egrets, herons, kingfisher, and the like.

 Kelly Morrissey

Google Map of location HERE http://ow.ly/EInGD

The Wyandotte Street East bridge can be accessed by taking the Manning Road
exit off either the 401 or EC Row expressway. Drive north to Riverside Drive
East, west until the marina and lighthouse, left (south) on Riverdale Avenue
three or so blocks to the intersection with the light. The bridge will be
just east of the intersection. Another good viewing vantage point for
waterfowl on this small tributary to the Detroit River is the bridge taking
Little River Road into Little River Corridor Park just a few blocks south of
there (continue on Riverdale Ave to get there).

some large pools of water on the surface, most prominently at the

[Ontbirds] Great Egret at Nottawasaga/Collingwood

2012-04-05 Thread Weseloh,Chip [Ontario]

Yesterday at 8:40 AM, I observed a single Great Egret flying from
Nottawasaga Island (where egrets breed) to the mainland just west of
Collingwood, Ontario. This was the first egret I had noted at or near
Nottawasaga Island this spring after conducting 1-hour observation
periods, from the shoreline, on 22, 25, 28 and 31` March. Nottawasaga
Island is the largest and one of the most northerly breeding colonies of
Great Egrets in Ontario. Previously already this spring, egrets have
been reported from the Chantry Island breeding colony (Southampton,
Ontario), from the vicinity of the Gull Island colony (Brighton,
Ontario) and from the new colony (last year) on an unnamed island in the
Niagara River (immediately above the Falls). Egrets have also been
reported from Essex County, suggesting that the several breeding
colonies on islands in western Lake Erie are also occupied.
Ontbirders are reminded to be watchful for evening roosting sites of
Great Ergrets, especially in spring when known roosting sites are
scarce. Egrets usually roost in trees or bushes in or near standing
water, sometimes in shallow water or on mudflats. Please send any such
observations to me.
Thanks,
Chip Weseloh
Directions: Nottawasaga Island can been seen quite clearly from an area
west of Collingwood. From Collingwood, take Hwy 26 (west) out of town.
On the western outskirts of town, watch for Dockside St./Ave. on the
right-hand side of the road. About 100m beyond Dockside is a vacant lot
with a large For Sale sign and a dirt road/trail leading towards the
water. Go to the bottom of this road/trail and walk out to the
shoreline where the island (with its lighthouse on the west end) can be
easily scoped. Great Blue Herons, Black-crowned Night-Herons, Great
Egrets, Double-crested Cormorants and Herring, Ring-billed and usually a
single pair of Great Black-backed Gulls breed on the island.

[Ontbirds] Great egret update and a Catbird Windsor-La Salle

2012-02-17 Thread Brad Hamel
I went out again today to try and find the Egret and it was spotted just west
of the bridge on Matchette road in La Salle. I then walked a little west to get
acloser look and met a man who allowed me to use his backyard to spot the
bird but his dog kinda beat me to it and scared the bird off. Me and John (the
man who lives there) both saw the bird fly off, he told me that he saw the bird
about 10 days ago so were guessing it stayed the winter. I left that area
after getting a terrible pic of the bird and walked the trail east for about 1
mile and spotted a Catbird in some brush. It was 2 years ago in march that I
reported seeing a Catbird in the same area to the folks at Ojibway nature
center. I'm thinking this bird also wintered over. I also saw a bald eagle fly
over and heard a Kingfisher. There is also a Mockingbird along the trail.
Directions to the Egret are to exit off Sprucewood road and turn left (south)
for about a mile and Turkey creek runs right thru. The Catbird can be found
behind the Tim Hortons on Malden road in La Salle. There's a walking trail
behind Tim's and the bird was seen there at around 3 o'clock.

[Ontbirds] Great Egret at Van Wagners Beach, Hamilton

2011-04-03 Thread Weseloh,Chip [Ontario]
This morning, at 722, there was a Great Egret at the north end of Van
Wagners Beach. In all likelihood, this is the same bird that Kevin
McLaughlin reported to Hamilton Birders yesterday; he saw it there at
830 Saturday morning. I was also at the High Level Bridge, in Hamilton,
with Peter Scholtens and his son, this morning before sunriselooking
for Kevin's egret at the two known autumn roosts that are visible from
the Bridge ---one at Hickory Island (to the west) and the other at
Carroll's Point; (to the east) - there were no egrets there. This
suggest that the egret may have roosted in...or near...Van Wagners Pond.
This would either be an unusual behaviour (roosting solitarily in a
marsh) or at the very least a new roosting site for the Hamilton area. I
would like to ask if any birders see this egret towards dusk this
evening, please stay around and watch it to see what it does as it gets
dark. Does it stay in the pond or does it fly off somewhere? That's
quite a simply...but important question re spring roosting behaviour of
Great Egrets. I'll try to be there myself.

Thanks,

Chip

Directions: From Toronto, take the QEW towards Niagara, as you approach
the Skyway Bridge, take Eastport Drive...stay on it over the Lift Bridge
and along the Bay on your right. Turn left onto Beach Blvd (there is a
sign), go right at the next set of lights (Van Wagners Beach Road) and
go down that road until you come to a marshy area on your right. The
egret was right there along the roadside at the beginning of the marshy
area.

[Ontbirds] Great Egret still at the Coves, London??- Yes

2010-07-27 Thread Len M

Greetings to all Ontbirders! :)

The Great Egret recently reported to be in the north pond of The Coves, in
London, On, is still there as of early this morning. I spotted it last night
and have had reports of it from today as well. Just make sure to check both
sides of the road (springbank), which feature two different ponds. The bird
will fly between ponds, but doesn't seem to be bothered by the proximity of the
road in the North Pond too much.

There are a lot of minnows here for the bird to feed on, so it may stay a
while. Also, keep eyes peeled for shorebirds as I have had a few reports of
different species as well.

For directions, e mail me or call me at 226-663-8163

[Ontbirds] Great Egret/Flamborough

2009-04-03 Thread execulink
Today at 1345 I spotted a Great Egret in the corn stubble fields and ponds
amongst Ring Billed Gulls behind the Rockton Berry Farm SW from Highway 8.
From my vantage point I could not determine if there were any legs bands.

Directions: nearest major cross roads are HWY 5 and HWY 8 north of Copetown.
Follow HWY 8 towards Cambridge. Rockton Berry Farm is on the south west side
of the highway.

[Ontbirds]Great Egret (Ottawa)

2008-10-20 Thread Ott User
Hi.
A lingering Great Egret was still at the pond along Earle Armstrong Road
near High Road. A Great Egret has been seen at this pond off and on now for at
least a month. Some days I see it and some days I don't (even when I walk out
to check). Late today it was busily feeding at the pond until dusk. There
were also 2 to 3 Great Blue Heron at the same pond along with a few hundred
Canada Geese. A White-Winged Scoter was also observed resting on the pond.
Last time I checked, Green-Winged Teals were still presnt at the pond along the
inner loop at the Jack Pine Trail. A number of males can be seen in nice
plumage. A young common merganser has been at the same pond for a couple of
months now. It swims very close to the boardwalk for great views.

[Ontbirds]Great Egret and Dunlin in Fort Erie

2008-05-31 Thread Jean and Bob

Hi All,

Today, May 31, my wife and I observed six Great Egrets on the Niagara River
in Fort Erie. They were observed on the stone pier slightly south of the
International Railway Bridge at 2:00 PM this afternoon. Two egrets flew up
river as we were leaving the parking area.

Four Dunlin were observed on Lake Erie at Jaeger Rocks near Lakeshore Road
and Adelaide Street at 3:00 PM this afternoon.

Bob Highcock and Jean Hampson
St. Catharines, ON

Directions:

Stone Pier on the Niagara River

In Fort Erie, exit the QEW at the Central Avenue exit. Turn right on to
Central Avenue and continue towards the river and head north (turning left)
on the Niagara Parkway (Lakeshore Rd/Niagara Blvd.). The parking area south
of the

International Railway Bridge is 1.5 km from the south end of Central Avenue
and on the right. Catherine Street will be on the left.

Jaeger Rocks

As above, but turn right on to Lakeshore Road. Lakeshore Road follows the
Lake Erie shoreline. At Lakeshore Road and Adelaide Street a rocky area
along the shoreline is apparent.

Started out the day by going down to 50 Point Conservation Area. While there
I viewed 2 yellow bellied sapsuckers, Caspian Terns, 5 Blue Heron, 2 Belted
Kingfishers, 1 pied grebe and a Great Egret.

Directions are QEW Niagara to 50 Road North, to North Service Road, left to
Baseline to Entrance

Then I headed back towards Bronte harbour. There I was fortunate enough to
view and photograph a pair of Red-necked Grebes. There where Caspian terns
as well as Double-crested cormorants present.

QEW to Bronte Road South, Lakeshore Blvd West one block to Marina entrance
on the south side of Lakeshore Blvd.

Then west along Lakeshore Blvd, to Shell Park. I viewed and photographed the
following birds while there. Northern Flicker, Carolina Wren, American
Goldfinch, and Hermit Thrush

QEW to Bronte Road South, Lakeshore Blvd West to Park entrance which is on
the north side of Lakeshore.

Good Birding and Good Luck...

[Ontbirds]Great Egret and Turkey Vultures

2007-09-05 Thread Ott User
Decided to check out Andrew Haydon Park and Ottawa Beach after work. There
was one Great Egret feeding in the mud flat area at AHP bordering Dick Bell
Park (same place where three Great Egrets were spotted a few days ago).

The highlight for me was the dozen or more Turkey Vultures flying over
Ottawa Beach. Earlier there were 9 of them walking on the beach itself. I
saw (smelled it before I saw it up close) the object of their affection, a
mostly eaten carcass on the beach.

From Highway 417 (The Queensway) take exit 129 (Greenbank Pinecrest

Pinecrest Road. If driving east, a 0.3 km offramp brings you to
Pinecrest/Greenbank Road, where you will turn left or north onto Pinecrest
Road and in 0.4 km join the westbound offramp traffic. Both groups will now
follow Pinecrest Road north 1.0 km from here to Carling Avenue. Turn left or
west on Carling and go 1.7 km to the turnoff for the parking lot for Ottawa
Beach on the right or north. Turn right into the lot.

My notes: To see the Great Egret, drive west along Carling from the
parking lot mentioned above and enter the next parking lot (or walk over on
the paved pathways) at Andrew Haydon Park.

A relative rarity for Ottawa, there were two Great Egrets fishing the Bruce Pit
today at 4:30. I observed them for only about ten minutes as I had just paused
for a quick check on the way to pick up my son from camp, but they were
actively fishing the north and east portions of the quarry pond.

Photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/silliopolous/1227844116/

Directions: Take 417 to 416 south and take the first exit (Hunt Club) from the
416. Turn left (east) onto hunt club, cross over the 416, and then take the
first left (Cedarview Road). Go north on Cedarview about 1km to the Bruce Pit
parking lot on your right. The quarry pond is immediately north of the parking
lot. Note, scan the tree in the middle of the field in Fosters Farm as you pass
it on Cedarview. It is a frequent perch for local raptors.

[Ontbirds]Great Egret - Long Point January12.

2007-01-12 Thread Stuart Mackenzie
Hello everyone,

This morning in the Bird Studies Canada headquarters, in Port Rowan, there was
a bustle of activity around 0930 when well over 100 Sandhill Cranes picked up
from the surrounding fields are marshes, and circled the property. Among them
was a Great Egret! The egret was again observed around 1630 flying west, low
over Big Creek marsh. Presumably this same egret was also seen from near the
causeway last Friday!

A great January bird!!!

Good birding,

Stu

From Highway 401 or Highway 3, come south
on Highway 59 to the north shore of Lake Erie. BSC's National Headquarters
is situated at 115 Front St. in Port Rowan. From Highway 59 south,
turn east on Regional Rd 42 (Front St) and drive 400 metres to our
building on the south side of the road. LPBO's Old Cut Field Station
is on Old Cut Blvd. on Long Point, just
two streets before Highway 59 ends at Long Point Provincial Park. We are
the 6th building
on the right as you head north on Old Cut Blvd. from Highway 59. There is
a small sign on
the front lawn. You can park across the road in the Ministry of Natural
Resources boat
launch parking lot. We're open to the public during spring and fall
migration (from April
to mid June and early August to mid November, respectively).

[Ontbirds]Great Egret, Richmond Hill

2006-08-30 Thread frank.pinilla
All, not a rarity but for York Region, I thought it noteworthy. There has been
a Great Egret hanging out today in the pond at the corner of Yonge Street and
Jefferson Sideroad in Richmond Hill. Jefferson Sdrd. is south of King Rd and
north of Elgin Mills Rd.

Also, last night before dusk I counted 23 Common Nighthawks and that was just
from the dinner table!

Cheers good birding,

[Ontbirds]Great Egret (Billings Bridge) Ottawa

2006-04-29 Thread Ott User

The Great Egret initially spotted last Saturday in the Rideau River across
from the Billings Bridge shopping centre has been seen regularly in the same
area for the last week, up to and including Friday, April 28th. I've seen
it there in the mornings on my way to work and regularly in the late
afternoons. As mentioned previously it tends to like the small islands on
the north side of the river. On Friday I saw it feeding right along the
bank on the north side.

As an aside, the area in and around the parking lot mentioned in the
directions below is a good spot to see a variety of birds including up to 6
Wood Ducks and a few days ago a small hawk flew by very close while chasing
after a few of the birds that frequent the area.

At 5:35 pm today, from my bus going over the Rideau River between Lees and
Hurdman Stations, I spotted the Great Egret on the river to the south-west of
the bridge.

This would make it visible from Springhurst Park, which can be reached from the
following route:
From the 417, take the Nicholas/Lees exit. Turn left onto Lees then right
onto Chesnut St. then left onto Springhurst.

Hello Ontbirders

After a cold and miserable weekend, I enjoyed a comfortable
delightful spectacle this evening at the quarry ponds off Moodie Drive,
south of Trail Road.

It was still cold, windy and wet when I arrived at about 4:50 pm.
However, there were a few interesting birds to keep me entertained.
As I scoped the area, the wind died down, the temperature rose, and the
sun poked through the western clouds.

Birds began arriving to the roost in good numbers. Meanwhile, a few
predators kept stirring the mix. This included an adult male Merlin, an
adult Red-tailed Hawk, and two Coyotes patrolling the shoreline.

Geese, swallows and blackbirds continued to arrive, even as I left at
7:45 pm.
The adult Greater White-fronted Goose arrived at 7:40 pm. It came in on
its own, and was persistently calling before it landed.

Other birds present include the following:
* All 6 eastern swallow species
* 17 species of waterfowl including all three species of merganser, 3
Redhead, 3 Ruddy Ducks and a Greater Snow Goose.
* 7 species of gull including 5 Bonapartes (various plumages), 3 adult
Lesser Black-backed, 4 various immature Glaucous, and one immaculate
breeding plumaged Iceland
* One night-heron was heard barking

Directions courtesy of Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/birding.htm

From Highway 416 take exit 66 (Fallowfield Road). If southbound, a 0.4
km offramp dumps onto Fallowfield, where you will turn right or west.
If northbound, the 0.4 km offramp brings you to Fallowfield, where you
will turn left or west onto it and in 0.5 km join the southbound
offramp traffic. Both groups will now follow Fallowfield Road west for
an additional 0.4 km to reach Moodie Drive. Turn left or southeast onto
Moodie Drive and go 5.3 km, passing Cambrian Road to reach the quarries
(second gate on the left). Park along the side of the road without
blocking the access.

Warning: This site is private property and is an active quarry. Because
of liability concerns the pit operators do not allow access during
working hours. Trucks and machinery operate here on workdays, so please
don't block the roads into the quarry. At such times, limited birding
can be accomplished from the roadside, which overlooks the pond,
especially with a good scope.

Hi All,

A morning outing to Second Marsh resulted in at least 8 Little Gulls
with 400+ Bonaparte's Gulls, my first 4 Common Terns of the year, also
here were a few Ruddy Ducks, Northern Shovelers and 1 Greater
Yellowlegs, in the very cold east winds.

I also stopped in at Thickson's Woods, where, just inside the gate at
the north side I watched a quiet LEAST FLYCATCHER for about 5 minutes
(also, independently seen and photographed by Gord Gallant), this seemed
quite early for this species in the GTA, early dates showing as April
25th. Also at Thickson's were many Winter Wrens, Yellow-rumped
Warblers, a couple of Pine Warblers (both species singing), a few
Eastern Towhees, and a large flock (100+) of mixed swallows along
Thickson's at the west side of the woods, including Northern
Rough-winged, Barn, Tree and a couple of Bank Swallows.

Good birding,

DIRECTIONS:
Second Marsh - If driving east from Toronto on Hwy 401 then exit at
Farewell Street (Exit 419) and drive south to Colonel Sam Drive, turn
left, east on Colonel Sam Drive and drive to the General Motors Head
Office parking lot. Park at the southwest corner of the lot and follow
the grassy trail from that corner to the viewing tower.
The trail from the tower runs north into the woods to another viewing
tower with another view of the marsh and of the surrounding woods and
wet area.=20

Thickson's Woods - If driving east from Toronto on Hwy 401 then exit at
Thickson Road (Exit 412) and turn right (south). Drive along Thickson

[Ontbirds]Great Egret (Billings Bridge) Ottawa

2006-04-23 Thread Ott User
The Great Egret reported on Saturday, April 22nd was still present in the
Rideau River across from the Billings Bridge Plaza. It seemed to spend most
of its time on the north side of the river. I saw it around 1pm as it was
taking flight but landed a short distance later near one of the small
islands. I left around 1:30pm but not before getting a very close look at
it on the north side of the river. Went back later to have another look and
it was still there at 4:30pm. Not sure if this is the same bird reported by
Roger Clark earlier today.

[Ontbirds]Great Egret at Thickson's in Whitby--April 8

2006-04-08 Thread Doug Lockrey
On Saturday morning, April8, a number of us were entertained by a Great Egret,
stalking the shallows, with periodic short fly-abouts, in the marshland to the
south of the old beaver dam, east of Thickson's Woods in southeast Whitby. 3
Green-winged Teals were there as well.
2 Eastern Phoebes busied themselves alongside the Corbett Creek valley, viewed
from the meadow path.
At the south end of the woods, at 9am, I was literally surrounded by 5
woodpecker species-- 1 Pileated, 4 Downy, 3 Hairy , 2 N.Flickers and 2+
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers.

Of interest is the building activity by beavers to the west of Thickson Rd., to
the immediate north of Wentworth Dr. Indeed, there is a very visible pond
between 2 dams, and, very near the northerly dam is a large tree that is liable
to fall very soon--it has been well-gnawed.

Exit the 401 at Thickson Rd. (in east Whitby), south through Wentworth to the
first street on your east -park alongside the north edge of the pine woods.

On behalf of the 2 who phoned in the bird to me (Gord Gallant and Ron
Stephenson) I am reporting a WHITE-TAILED KITE which flew northward over the
east side of McLaughlin Bay at Darlington P.P.in Oshawa--2pm on April 8. They
were so concentrated on noting the all-white tail and diagnostic underwing
features that there was no opportunity to photograph the bird as he flew over
them.
E-mail or phone me to ask for Gord's cell-phone no. if you wish to contact him.

The west approach to Darlington is by exiting the 401 at Farewell, south to

[Ontbirds]Great Egret and Orchard Oriole at High Park, Toronto

2005-05-15 Thread Jay Peterson

Hello ontbirders,

An evening walking around High Park uncovered a Great Egret in the southwest
area of Grenadier pond. In addition to that delightful bird, I found an
Orchard Oriole singing away near the downward turn on to Deer pen Road.

Not a whole lot of warbler activity this evening. Many Yellow-Rumped, 2
Yellow, 2 Nashville an American Redstart and a few assorted Chipping
Sparrows.

A pair of Wood Duck and the resident Black-Crowned Night heron are usually
easy to find.

Good birding,

Good Day All

Today was another pleasant day on the Toronto Islands even if it was hard
on the feet.

Some of the new arrivals were Caspian Tern (2), N. Mockingbird (1),
Rough-winged Swallow (2), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (21), Black-throated
blue-Warbler (1 rough looking male), Swamp Sparrow (5), White-throated
Sparrow (21), Savannah Sparrow (26), and Chipping Sparrow (2).

Other birds of note were Canvasback (1 pair), N. Flicker (78), E. Phoebe
(7), Hermit Thrush (25), Brown Creeper (21), Winter Wren (9), Song Sparrow
(35), Field Sparrow (19), E. Towhee (3), and N. Cardinal (13).

Golden-crowned Kinglet and Dark-eyed Junco numbers are down to below 50 and
not one A. Tree Sparrow was seen by me.

Be aware that if you plan a trip over there during these nice days that a
large number of people start arriving after 10am but if you follow the route
Wards (behind the houses) to Snake Is. to Snug Is. thru Centre Is. to the
Wildlife Sanctuary and on to Gibralter and Hanlans Point you will miss the
bulk of the crowds as they stick to the more manicured areas and walkways
and if you take children over also be aware that the beach on Hanlans Point
is a nude Beach and some men already are using it.

All in all a nice day to be out with 56 species tallied.

Good birding.

DIRECTIONS
TORONTO ISLANDS

To get to the Toronto Islands from Queen and Yonge Streets on the TTC. If
your on the subway

southbound stay on it and get off at Union Station, walk south about 1 km to
the ferry docks at the

foot of Bay Street and Queens Quay and you are there. If in an auto on the
Gardener Expressway

or on Lakeshore Blvd, then exit at Bay Street and drive south to Queens
Quay, there are lots of

parking lots nearby (fee). There is a fee for using the island ferries
($6.00 / $3.50 for seniors) and to

find out the sailing times you can phone (416) 392-8193 and there are
washrooms on the islands

as well as the city side at the ferry docks.

The 1st boat to Wards Island (my preferred starting point) is 6:35 am and
the 2nd is 7:15 am Monday

to Saturday and the 1st is at 8:00 am on Sunday.

[Ontbirds]Great Egret, Pt. Colborne, etc

2005-01-02 Thread john miles
This morning on the Pt. Colborne CBC we had a Great Egret alone the ditch
beside the Wilson Rd. This road is the first through N/S road west of the
Wainfleet Swamp west of Port Colborne. The spot is perhaps 300 metres north
of No. 3. The site is a clear weedy opening of 5-10 acres. The ditches alone
the roads are all open so the bird could be anywhere. A Great Blue Heron is
also feeding alone this ditch.
The Fisherville CBC was held Saturday and not all reports are in. The
preliminary count is over 80 species with the highlight a Virginia Rail at
the head water marsh of Taquanyah. 7 immature Bald Eagles were east of the
Power Plant, an adult west of Cheapside and more along the Grand River.
Tuck in beside the Power Plant was a flock of 20 Great Blue Herons, 2
Double-creast Cormorants and 3 American Coots.
Due to the heavy snow and ice storm just before Christmas the raptors
departed in mass as per the hawk flight recorded on the West Elgin count.
Consequently with the heavy crust on the snow most of the Short-eared Owl
vacated the area before the count. Eastern Screech-owls seem to be in good
supply with 3 groups each getting over 20, the final total yet to be
determined.
Of special note one of the groups was approached by a local who reported
hitting a Barn Owl Friday morning on the way to work. Not knowing what to do
with the bird he apparently disposed of it in a Cayuga dumpster

[Ontbirds]Great Egret Hamilton and Niagara Trip

2004-12-05 Thread Mark Cranford
I saw the previously reported Great Egret in the back of the wetland off
Valley Inn Road at the beginning of the Hendrie Valley Trail. All three
Scoters at Sayles Park, Stoney Creek (in subdivision on east side of Grays
Road).

Niagara River gull numbers are building. The viewing platform at Adam Beck
provides lots of interesting birds, including the California regularly
perched on the rocks at the north (downstream) side of the US power plant,
Iceland, Glaucous, Lesser-blacked, Thayer's and an oversized Nelson's type
(hybrid Herring and Glaucous). No Little Gulls seen anywhere. It was
verbally reported that two were seen at the Whirlpool. I also heard
rumours of Saturday sightings of the Black-legged Kittywake.

Easily (bins - scope a lot easier) saw a Purple Sandpiper on a large
solitary moss-covered rock 100 - 150 meters offshore 150 meters upstream
from Barge. Reported female Harlequin and male European Common Teal
(Green-winged Teal with horizontal white bar in folded wing) were not seen.

Awesome Rough-legged Hawk and Northern Harrier activity on Airport Road in
Vineland.

The Rufous Hummingbird continues. I believe the hosts of the bird ask
birders to wait until 9 am before visiting.

Directions:
Rufous Hummingbird
Take the QEW to the Thorold Stone Road exit in Niagara Falls. Now turn left
(east) to Dorchester Road, then right (south) one block to Pettit Avenue.
Take a left here and continue for about 1/2 km to Sherwood Road (directly
across from First Baptist Church on the right hand side). Turn left and
proceed one block to Peach Avenue to 4579, the second or third house on
your right.

Great Egret - Valley Inn - from Plains Road and Highway 403 - west on
Plains Road (maybe called York after Highway 6). Less than 1 click turn
left off 'Plains' onto Valley Inn Road after crossing single-lane bridge
turn left and cross second single-lane bridge. Park at closed gates to Rose
Garden. Walk Hendrie Valley Trail 70 meters to lookout.

Niagara River - including Adam Beck - QEW to Highway 405 (and Lewiston
bridge to USA). Highway 405 EXIT at STANLEY St. Cross overpass and turn
right and follow first east to river and a new round-about. Right to Adam
Beck and Niagara Falls. Around and downhill to Queenston (sand docks off
Dumfries Road) and Niagara-on-the-Lake (aka NOTL). The Barge is upstream
from the Falls. Free (seems to change day-to-day) parking was at the
Greenhouse across from the Barge and south of the $10 parking lots.

Airport Road Vineland - (I need a map atlas) - from Hamilton heading to the
River - exit first road past Welland Ship Canal and follow road to
Niagara-on-the-Lake cross highway left at lights then right at next lights.
Inspect weedy fields just below a secondary escarpment bench (bad geology
talk) both sides of road.

Today (Sun. Aug. 15), just before noon, Dave Don and I had a juv.
Western Sandpiper at the Townsend Sewage Lagoons. It was in the SE cell
with the several hundred other shorebirds. We tallied 13 shorebird
species here, including the Red-necked Phalarope, 2 White-rumped
Sandpipers, 1 Stilt Sandpiper and 1 juv. Short-billed Dowitcher. There
were also 8 Bonaparte's Gulls in the NE cell, including one juvenile.

Directions: From Hamilton, go south on Hwy. 6, continue south past
Hagersville; turn west on Haldimand Reg. Rd. 69 into Townsend. At the
four-way stop, turn south on Keith Richardson Parkway. At the road just
before the railway tracks, turn right; the lagoons are about 1 km along
on the north side. Do not block the entranceway or park in the turning
widening.

[Ontbirds]Great Egret-Cranberry /Whitby-Aug.8

2004-08-08 Thread Doug Lockrey
During the morning hours of Aug.8 a Great Egret was visible in the eastern
waters of Cranberry Marsh-- it could be seen by standing on the mid-rail of
the north platform on the west side of the wetlands. Also 2 Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds were noted along the pathway to this platform.

For the past 2 days I have not been able to see the Red-headed Woodpeckers
at the south end of the old Whitby Mental Hospital cottages-- today John
Stirrat and I discovered a juvenile Cooper's Hawk in one of the trees
between cottages 28 and 30. Overhead were Chimney Swifts.

The Cranberry Marsh Raptor Watch will kick off prior to the last weekend of
the month.

To get to the hospital grounds-- west from Henry St. in Whitby on Victoria
St. to the first street on the south side--Gordon St.-- south right to the
bottom-- on the corner is cottage #30

For Cranberry Marsh-- south down Hall's Rd., which is 1 block east of
Lakeridge on Victoria St. in Whitby.

Folks:

On the way home from seeing the Painted Bunting (lifer) at Normandale
AND the Red Necked Phalarope (year bird) at Townsend's, I was driving
through Thorndale and a large white mass in a tree caught my eye. By the
time I could pull the truck over to the side, it had flown down into the
river and began feeding. It turned out to be a Great Egret. It was in
the river, north of the dam, north of number 2 highway in Thorndale.
Thorndale is about 10 miles east of London on highway 2.
