RE: Expanding skill sets - So, what's next?

2008-02-08 Thread Billy Cox
I did a .NET project last year - customization of a DotNetNuke install, so I
wasn't writing anything from scratch. I was struck by how how many choices I
had in everything from hosting to pre-developed components.

I think that .NET would be a good complement to CF skills and it's never a
bad idea to have some of the evil empire's tools in your toolbox.

I am looking to expand my skill set. I already have the typical
CF/JavaScript/SQL/HTML/CSS/XML stuff, but there are still a lot of options.

I am looking at Java, PHP, and .Net. I have used a little Flex and
Flash/Actionscript in the past, so they would be possibilities as well.
Having experience with them all would be ideal, but realistically, I am
going to have to go with one or two at a time. I am just not sure where the

best place to start would be. PHP seems the simplest of all and I have seen

quite a few opportunities floating around for people with LAMP.

So, I am asking you fine folks. What would be your top one or two choices?

Without going into too much personal detail, I will say that over the

Ruby on Rails is next on my list ... I'm tired of losing business to people
who just flat-out refuse to switch hosting to one that uses CF or won't
shell out the bucks for a copy of CF ...

I really should, in that case, learn PHP, but I just can't bring myself to
do it for some unknown ridiculous rebellious reason ... same with .NET

Ruby looks more interesting to me, an important factor in motivating me to
learn anything new.

If you don't want to completely switch gears from CF to learn a new
language, sharpening up on Flex would be most beneficial, IMHO. I think Flex
opportunities are going to explode through the roof.

Ad-aware is a great scanner ... but I wouldn't recommend leaving it on
permanently. I've had a lot of trouble with in that regard: it's a resource
hog and it often gets confused and tried to protect you from yourself. For
example my Internet Explorer home page was set to gibberish and I couldn't
change it... figured out Ad Aware was protecting it.

I leave it installed but inactive and scan regularly.

Re: Differences between Obama and Hillary

2008-02-08 Thread Maureen
Here are the major problems with any health care plan.

1. The outrageous profiteering of the insurance industry.
2. The outrageous profiteering of the health care industry
3. The lobbying of congress by said industries to make sure their
profit machine does not go away.
4. The level of fraud infesting both industries when dealing with
the consumer and with government programs.
5. Any proposed program would create a bureaucracy that would cost
more than the health care costs

Until you fix those, any universal health care program will fail. In
fact, if those problems aren't addressed soon, the existing health
care system is going to collapse under its own weight.

I've spent most of my 30 plus year career writing software and doing
management consulting in the insurance and health care industries.
Both of them are rotten to the core. Throwing more money at the
problem is never going to fix it. It will just fatten the sharks.

Employer Contribution:
Employers that do not offer or make a meaningful contribution to the
cost of quality health coverage for their employees will be required
to contribute a percentage of payroll toward the costs of the national
plan. Small employers that meet certain revenue thresholds will be
exempt.

I'm getting from this that the government is adding business payroll
tax unless you're business is operating at the poverty level.

Isn't this the same as HC's mandatory insurance plan?

George W. Bush and the G-Word
By Al Kamen
Friday, October 14, 2005; Page A17
The reemergence of the controversy that President Bush allegedly told
Palestinian leaders that God told him to invade Afghanistan and then
Iraq is not the only time that his comments regarding God have sparked
confusion.

In July 2004, he stopped to campaign with some Amish folks at Lapp
Electric Service in Smoketown, Pa. Just as the meeting ended, Bush,
according to Mennonite Weekly Review columnist Jack Brubaker, told the
group: I trust God speaks through me. Without that I couldn't do my
job. This also produced White House denials that Bush used those
words.

Loop Fans will recall that the Palestinian kerfuffle began in June
2003, when an Israeli paper reported that former Palestinian prime
minister Mahmoud Abbas said Bush told the Palestinian leaders: God
told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then he
instructed me to strike at Saddam Hussein, which I did.

The White House declined to clarify, but the Israeli reporter at the
time read what he said were the Palestinians' minutes of the meeting
to an Arabic-speaking colleague here. Our colleague's translation was
different: God inspired me to hit al Qaeda, and so I hit it. And I
had the inspiration to hit Saddam, and so I hit him.

Substantially different, we felt. Moreover, this is Abbas's account in
Arabic of what Bush said in English, written down by a note-taker in
Arabic and then put back into English.

The newest uproar was sparked by a BBC documentary airing this week in
which Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath says Bush said during that
meeting that he was driven with a mission from God.

President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from
God. God would tell me, George, go and fight those terrorists in
Afghanistan. And I did, and then God would tell me, George, go and end
the tyranny in Iraq. . . . And I did. This sounds much like the
original Haaretz version. Bush then allegedly said God had now told
him to go get the Palestinians their state.

This time there is a response: We checked contemporaneous notes from
the meeting with President Abbas and did not find a single reference
to God, a senior administration official told us. The closest thing
we could find that the president said is: 'My government and I
personally are committed to the vision of a Palestinian state.'

Back in 2004, a White House spokesman told Mennonite Weekly columnist
Brubaker that Bush likely talked about his own faith, as he often
does, but did not say God speaks through him.

Brubaker, in a follow-up column, said he checked with his source, an
Amish reporter, who rechecked with attendees and had gotten different
wording from several of them. But Bush has said similar things on
other occasions, Brubaker noted, citing B ob Woodward's Plan of
Attack, where Bush says he's surely not going to justify the war
based on God . . . Nevertheless . . . I pray I be as good a messenger
of his will as possible.

'Messenger of his will [or] God speaks through me,' Brubaker
wrote. The difference seems rather fine.

The question is, how is it that Bush so confuses groups as diverse as
the Palestinians and the Amish? Is it the Andover-Texas accent?

That's not what he's proposing is it?

Employer Contribution:
Employers that do not offer or make a meaningful contribution to the
cost of quality health coverage for their employees will be required
to contribute a percentage of payroll toward the costs of the national
plan. Small employers that meet certain revenue thresholds will be
exempt.

I'm getting from this that the government is adding business payroll
tax unless you're business is operating at the poverty level.

Isn't this the same as HC's mandatory insurance plan?

Hij ack This is more of a reporting tool than a spam removal tool. It
shows all registry keys, installed Browser Add-Ons and extensions etc.
You need the knowledge of knowing which extensions to look for, what
the registry keys mean and then how to manually remove them.

Try geeks2go.com
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Malware-Removal-HijackThis-Logs-Go-Here-f37.html

and see if someone there will take pity on you.
It helps to be obsequious.

Failing that, reinstall windows and your primary applications. When
you have the system the way you want it, before installing anything
else make a backup image using Acronis Truimage Home.
Should anything ever go wrong in the future, you can recover the OS in
about ten minutes and continue working.

because it's medicinal affects are easily replicated and surpassed with
other drugs that don't have any of the negative side affects.

Hhm, not so sure about that...it's one of the most effective anti-emetics and
thus very useful in pain treatment of people particularly with end-stage
disease. I have chronic pain issues, and I can tell you it's a frustrating
situation when you have a choice between suffering with the pain or taking pain
meds that you know will make you sick to your stomach or have severe cramps,
etc. I've never tried marijuana (nor would I be likely to) but I do understand
people wanting the option to use it when nothing else works. They just need to
regulate the use of it better...which frankly goes for all narcotics...way too
easy to abuse any of them, get scripts from multiple doctors, etc.

Another somewhat related issue is industrial hemp...a crop that could do a
great deal to help farmers and our struggling economy. We're the only
industrial nation that does not produce hemp, and it's time for that to be
corrected.

That is what Maureen is saying as well. I had heard at one point they had
engineered some marijuana that retained many of the medicinal qualities of
the plant, without the THC high.

I had read several doctor's reports where they suggested that other
medicines were preferred to marijuana in just about every instance. They
seemed to suggest patients who said otherwise were at least partly
interested in the other affects of marijuana.

I guess I'm up in the air after listening to you and Maureen...

 4. The level of fraud infesting both industries when dealing with

 5. Any proposed program would create a bureaucracy that would cost

Until you fix those, any universal health care program will fail. In
fact, if those problems aren't addressed soon, the existing health

I've spent most of my 30 plus year career writing software and doing

That's even worse than I could ever fathom, and inexcusable.
And precisely why someone needs to step in and do something...

It's amazing how bad it has gotten so quickly. Health problems are now the
number one cause of bankruptcy...and that's among people that *have* health
insurance. Costs for the self-insured are rising so fast that more and more
can't afford if (if they are even able to get coverage) and if you get sick at
all you can expect your premium to shoot up the following year (mine went up by
about $400 this year due to one trip to the emergency room last year...my only
medical expense last year other than one or two normal wellness visits.) You
hear more and more stories of people denied coverage for important tests or
treatments, and people that can't afford the medicine due to the overwhelming
cost of prescription drugs. I personally suffer with reflux and should be on
one of the newer drugs but the cost is about $100/month for me, so make due
with Prilosec even though it's no longer effective for me. Likewise my eye
doctor would like me to try Restasis for dry eye...that one was $200 for a
month supply! I'll make due with eye drops, thank you. These aren't the kinds
of sacrifices well-employed, middle-class people should have to make, but we
do. The American Dream is rapidly moving out of reach for all but a very few.

Re: The Fairtax Book

2008-02-08 Thread Matt Quackenbush
A regressive tax system does not mean and likely would not result in low
income earners paying more taxes than the wealthy, only that the effective
tax rate relative to income or consumption would be a larger tax burden to
low income earners.

Given the definition on the Wikipedia page, the effect of which is summed up
by the above quote, a regressive tax is extremely appealing to me. It means
that the more I make, the less tax affects me. That's hellabetter than
being taxed more (in terms of %) just because I'm more successful than I was
the year before. Gives me even more motivation to better my income.

Comics are heavy!

2008-02-08 Thread Jim Davis
I'm not saying that they're deep... I'm saying that they're seriously
freaking ton-tastic.

I just moved my whole collection from the garage to my bedroom. That means
I emptied two five-drawer legal-sized file cabinets into 17 long boxes,
carried everything up two flight of steps and then put all the books back in
the drawers.

Fat men aren't made for this! ;^)

Still... it only took me a little under two hours for the whole operation.

I do wish I would have taken up stamp collecting tho'.

Re: The Fairtax Book

2008-02-08 Thread Dana
I am not sure why Adam thinks you are arguing intelligently. To me it
seems as though I am having a discussion about economics with someone
who knows nothing about the subject and does not want to learn. I do
not think that a progressive tax rate is generally considered a
subsidy. But supposing it was:

In many instances, economics may (somewhat counter-intuitively)
suggest that direct subsidies are preferable to other forms of
support, such as hidden subsidies or trade barriers; although
subsidies may be inefficient, they are often less inefficient than
other policy tools used to benefit certain groups. Direct subsidies
may also be more transparent, which may allow the political process
more opportunity to eliminate wasteful hidden subsidies. This problem
- that hidden subsidies are more inefficient, but often favored
precisely because they are non-transparent - is central to the
political-economy of subsidies.

Examples of industries or sectors where subsidies are often found
include utilities, gasoline in the United States, welfare, farm
subsidies, and (in some countries) certain aspects of student loans.

Re: The Fairtax Book

2008-02-08 Thread Dana
I think that moderation is the key to this as to many other things. As
best I recall Britain reached a point where its top tax rate was over
90% -- this was back in the 70s, and that is why people like Mick
Jagger and John Lennon moved elsewhere. Clearly, such a tax structure
is a disincentive to increased earnings. However, if you tax everyone
at 20% -- let's say -- this is a much greater burden on some people
than on others.

On Feb 8, 2008 6:32 PM, Matt Quackenbush [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
A regressive tax system does not mean and likely would not result in low
income earners paying more taxes than the wealthy, only that the effective
tax rate relative to income or consumption would be a larger tax burden to
 low income earners.

Given the definition on the Wikipedia page, the effect of which is summed up
by the above quote, a regressive tax is extremely appealing to me. It means
that the more I make, the less tax affects me. That's hellabetter than
being taxed more (in terms of %) just because I'm more successful than I was
the year before. Gives me even more motivation to better my income.

can't afford if (if they are even able to get coverage) and if you get sick
at all you can expect your premium to shoot up the following year (mine went
up by about $400 this year due to one trip to the emergency room last
year...my only medical expense last year other than one or two normal
wellness visits.) You hear more and more stories of people denied coverage
for important tests or treatments, and people that can't afford the medicine
due to the overwhelming cost of prescription drugs. I personally suffer with
reflux and should be on one of the newer drugs but the cost is about
$100/month for me, so make due with Prilosec even though it's no longer
effective for me. Likewise my eye doctor would like me to try Restasis for
dry eye...that one was $200 for a month supply! I'll make due with eye drops,
thank you. These aren't the kinds of sacrifices well-employed, middle-class
people should have to make, but we do. The American Dream is rapidly moving

We have a computer that I think is infected with spyware. We have Norton

 Thanks.
