In Java there isn't a way to read CPU usage. There are utilities which

Spike,

Glad to see you are actively soliciting input. Here's my list:

- A good data browser. Sean suggested DBEdit, I'll have a look at it.

- Multiple file/folder panes. Maybe I'm lazy but I find the two file/folder
pane feature of HS+ to be really convenient. That was such a big deal when it
was added to HS+.

- Split file/folder panes. Possible with CFE today? The DW layout really bugs
me, and personally I think it represents very poor usability. Here we spend all
this time learning to build usable Web sites that don't scroll, and we end up
with an IDE with endless scrolling. It would be really cool if the panes were
detachable.

- VSS integration

- Something like the Tag Inspector pane in HS+. I don't use it all THAT often,
but I find it comes in really handy on occasion, especially when looking at
someone else's code.

- The current top 10 on CFEclipse look good, although I would have put the CFC
thing lower given that the server can do that already.

Most of all, above everything else, I would like a system that is well
documented and comes with an easy-to-install, well understood baseline package.
I have downloaded and setup Eclipse on a bunch of machines, and yet I just
downloaded it (3.01) to install on my laptop and I got a JVM terminated. Exit
code=1 error. I have no idea what that means and I'm not inclined to look
right now. I need a package I can download that will just work when I install
it.

If you want to insert a snippet wrapped around some text you can browse
to the snippet you want in the snippets view, select the text you want
to wrap, and double-click on the snippet you want to insert.

You can't insert snippets via a keyboard shortcut, but we could probably
figure out a way to make that work. One possibility being if you have
something selected and type ctrl+i it pops up a dialog asking you for
the trigger text for the snippet to insert. There are other ways we
could do it, but that's one that springs to mind.

For each snippet you can assign a set trigger trigger characters such as
cff for a snippet that inserts a cffunction block. When you type that
trigger followed by ctrl+i it will insert the snippet and prompt you for
any custom snippet variables in the snippet. You can configure a
different shortcut to use instead of ctrl+i.

That's something I could probably adapt to... Are there plans to
adopt assignable keyboard shortcuts in future versions, or will these
trigger characters be the only available functionality long term?

Bzzzt! Nope. Not the editor. I think you'll find the official line
is that it's meant to be a ColdFusion editor and that it's meant to
have enough functionality that CFers don't actually *need* anything
beyond DW (they may *want* more but that's a different story). In
other words, if you're building a web site and using CF, you *could*
use DW as your only IDE.

Read Ben Forta's CFDJ article on Dreamweaver:

http://www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/article.cfm?id=696

So, is Dreamweaver MX 2004 the best tool for ColdFusion developers,
and if I was asked to say so now would I be able to do so? I think I'd
have to answer that with a qualified possibly. It is probably not
the best tool for all ColdFusion developers, but for many it is. Is
Dreamweaver MX 2004 a replacement for ColdFusion Studio? Absolutely
not (and I know that some Macromedia sales reps spin Dreamweaver that
way, and they're wrong). If it was, we'd not include HomeSite+ with
every copy of Dreamweaver bought, would we? The reason we provide both
products is that there is value in both, and as a ColdFusion developer
you get to pick which works best for you, using one or both as suits
you best. (Yes, if you are a Windows Dreamweaver user, then you
already have a copy of HomeSite+ that you may use too; it's included
with Dreamweaver but needs to be installed separately.)

Dave, your message is really difficult to read.

I'm not sure that your assessment of Robert not knowing how to use
Dreamweaver is accurate at all. The reality is that there is a significant
amount of scrolling with that design for files and folders that simply isn't
necessary.

My laptop is 1400 by 1050, and my workstation is 1280 by 1024, and both of
them involve a lot of scrolling that also results in disconnection from
where in the file structure you are.

---adirectory
---mydirectory

Is something similar to what I'm getting used to seeing in that panel. Of
course, if you want to actively use any of the other panels at the same
time, those panels also eat up that screen real estate.

I don't think its great usability at all. I think Windows Explorer and
HomeSite are far better.

Re: Joe - dave Arrays VS. Structures?

2005-01-14 Thread Joe Rinehart
Hey Will,

Good to see you thinking dynamically!

You actually don't need an array or a struct to do this, but I'll
write up a quick way using each.

Without array of structs:

cfset numberoffields = 5

!--- actions ---
cfif weProcessAFormNow and everythingIsValid
  cfloop from=1 to=#numberoffields# index=i
cffile action=upload formfield=file#i#...
cfquery datasource=#dsn#
   INSERT INTO files (title, filename)
   VALUES ('#form[title i]#', '#cffile.serverFile#')
/cfquery
  /cfloop
/cfif

!--- form ---
cfloop index=i from=1 to=#variables.numberoffields# step=1
cfset filename = file i
cfset titlename = title i
input type=File name=#variables.filename# /
input type=text name=#variables.titlename# /
br /
/cfloop

If you needed to break that and store everything in an array of
structs, here's how we could do the action part:

!--- actions ---
cfif weProcessAFormNow and everythingIsValid
  cfset uploadedFiles = arrayNew(1) /
  cfloop from=1 to=#numberoffields# index=i
cfset thisFile = structNew() /
cffile action=upload formfield=file#i#...
cfset thisFile.title = form[title i] /
cfset thisFile.file = cffile.serverfile /
cfset arrayAppend(uploadedFiles, thisFile) /
  /cfloop

!--- Ok, loop over array to do insert ---
  cfloop from=1 to=#arrayLen(uploadedFiles)# index=i
cfquery datasource=#dsn#
   INSERT INTO files (title, filename)
   VALUES ('#uploadedFiles[i].title#', '#uploadedFiles[i].file#')
/cfquery
  /cfloop
/cfif

I'm reading some on Jeff Peters book, Lists, arrays, and structures, and I'd
like to ask you guys what would be the best way to handle my form values,
 looping them into a table.

Let's say I had this for a form.
 cfset numberoffields = 5

 cfloop index=i from=1 to=#variables.numberoffields# step=1
 cfset filename = file i
 cfset titlename = title i
 input type=File name=cfoutput#variables.filename#/cfoutput /
 input type=text name=cfoutput#variables.titlename#/cfoutput /
 br /
 /cfloop

How would I build a flexible array or structure that ArrayAppend(ed) or
StructAppend(ed) my items into them. Then I loop over the array or structure
and insert the values into my table.

What's the best method? Joe? dave? Could you provide a simple example?

 Thanks,

 Will

If so what are your experienes with it, would you recommend using it ?

As the standard Verity search with coldfusion is slow and not very accurate
in its search results.

Or are there any other search engines that can be used with Coldfusion for
fast and accurate results?

It's not really a bug. Using CFQUERYPARAM with CFQUERY
means that rather than a regular statement, CF is able to use
prepared statements, so the execution plan (depending on the
RDBMS you're working with) can be cached for extra execution speed.

To cache with both, it's have to store the values passed into
the CFQUERYPARAM tags, the prepared statement itself, and
various other bits and pieces. They probably see it as being
 more trouble than it's worth.

How hard could that be? What other various bits and pieces would they need
other than the query itself and the parameter values?

I agree that it's not a bug, but it's certainly a poor implementation, just
like prior versions of CF couldn't support CFCOOKIE and CFLOCATION within
 the same script.

Re: OT: Homesite enhancement project?

2005-01-14 Thread Mark Drew
In CFEclipse, Spike added the CFStudio style Explorer, does this help
people? I have got my head round using projects and tend to not use
this explorer too much (I guess its a matter of preference)

IMHO having TWO of these is nuts. you have a project view already
(where your site should be in theory) and then the Explorer view that
allows you to view local files and do FTP actions.

A note on the snippets, if you are used to donig CTRL+space for code
completion already you can map the instert snippet action to this too
which makes it really intuitive

fusedoc CTRL + space for example just rocks my boat

I love the idea of doing

CTRL + i list of snippets (like code completion) + return.

Saves my dumb Homer like brain from remembering the quazillion
shortcuts, although havnig said that there are a couple that I do love
in CFE, that if they are equivalents in DW I havent spotted

Ctrl + Shift + d = surround with cfdump var=##
Ctrl + d = delete line (bye bye CFDUMP)
Ctrl + E = show list of open documents (then you can put the first
leter of the document and it filters by it)

The nice thing about the list of documents in CFE is that they are
done in name + path that II find very useful (especially if you do
fusebox as I have fbx_Switches by the stack)

Anyway, to each his own but I only use CFStudio now as it has the best
documentation on it

Re: Verity Pickle...

2005-01-14 Thread Gel .
I realise no one is following this thread anymore, but I'm just updating it in
case it helps someone from the archives later.

Course if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to chime in.

I have changed the Select strings to make all the keys unique. I still don't
understand why this is necessary, but I was advised to do so (thanks Phil) and
it worked...to a point. The records are now being indexed.

Until I add a fifth table. Now the select statement is fine, if I run an index
on this table by itself it works. But once I add it as the fifth table in the
Union query, the CFINDEX results in a 0 length collection.

So the scenario is this. Union on 4 tables...CFINDEX works.
Union on 5 tables (Any table, and all the SQL is valid, the QUery runs and
works), and Verity fails to INdex the query.

I am not dealing with a lot of records here. The Query still returns the
correct number of rows, but it is CFINDEX that seems to be bombing for unknown
reasons.

I cannot get around this problem, and to me it seems to be a bug rather than
somethign I am doing incorrect. Someone feel free to correct this if I'm wrong.

As the only possible workaround, I am going to create a seperate collection for
every joined One to Many table pair I have, and then run the CFSearch on these
multiple collections. Messy.

I've been greatly disheartened by the lack of documentation, online help, and
it would appear,'buggyness' of the Verity implementation thus far.

Again, if anyone has any suggestions or reasons why this is all happening,
please let me know :)

Here's an example of what I changed all the Select statements to:
select tblCasinos.casinoid + '|' + 'H' + '|' + CStr(tblVideoPoker.videoid) AS
CasinoID,tblVideoPoker.videodesc AS pokerdesc
from tblCasinos,tblvideopoker
where ',' + tblCasinos.videopoker + ',' like '%,' + CStr(tblVideopoker.videoid)
+ ',%'

The letter 'H' was necessary to ensure that the keys returned would be
unique.Though I still don't understand why this is necessary :)

That would also display the address to everyone. You must use bcc for
that... that is why it is called Blind Carbon Copy.

I don't think you can nest tags inside attributes.

However, this may be closer:

cfscript

var result = '';
if (row EQ 1)
result = myEmail;
return result;
}
/cfscript

CFOUTPUT QUERY=mail_roster
CFMAIL TO=#student#
  FROM=#mailfrom#
  BCC=#setBCC(mail_roster.CurrentRow)#
  SUBJECT=Greetings

BLAH BLAH BLAH

/CFMAIL

Doesn't CFMX choke on blank mail addresses though?

timeouts and DB connections

2005-01-14 Thread Douglas Knudsen
As I recall it, if you have a CF page with a very long running query
and the page hits the request timeout limit, the long running query is
not cancelled and continues to run tieing up a CF thread.

Now, what happens if you use the timeout attribute of cfquery tag?
From what I understand, CF passes this value along to the JDBC driver.
Does this actually nick the query running? Or does it just throw
the same exception as with the request timeout?

Nothing mentioned here about it

consuming webservices

2005-01-14 Thread Matthew Small
Hi all,
I've built a webservice in .Net that I intend to consume from CF. As
I'm building it, I've noticed that the .NET Web service's arguments are
cached by CF - that is, if I make a change to the .NET WS, then CF doesn't
realize it.
I know this sounds sort of strange, but as I'm troubleshooting the
connection between CF and .NET, I might see one error message from CF. I'll
continue to see the same error message repeatedly, even if I change the .NET
webservice to work with what CF is passing. When I restart the CF server,
it then acts appropriately - either by throwing a different error or
working.
Is there a setting to change in CF to prevent Webservice caching?

Thank you,
Matthew Small

Re: Verity Pickle...

2005-01-14 Thread Deanna Schneider
The unique keys in a verity collection are for the same reasion you need a
unique key in a database - for updates. When verity refreshes a collection,
it doesn't drop the whole thing and rebuild it. It looks for the key and if
it exists, it updates the record.

As to why it fails with a fifth table, I'm not sure. Are you sure that when
you add the fifth table you still end up with all unique keys? Have you
tried making your mongo query as a view in the database, and then calling on
CF query on the view and indexing that?

Re: cf on linux

2005-01-14 Thread Yves Arsenault
One thing you should keep in mind is that the Verity engine that comes
with CFMX only supports certain Linux distribs, at least it did at the
time I set up the MX server. If I'm wrong or have outdated info,
please feel free to jump in

:-)

But there was a Lucene based engine on one of the DRKs...

For BD 6.1, I manage a BD 6.1 on Mandrake 10 box, BD 6.1 has Lucene
built into it.
I've never used it in production, but have tested it, it seems to work
very well.

Thanks,

Yves

refreshed. A PITA, but not as bad as restarting CF every time!

Consuming .NET webservices in CF

2005-01-14 Thread Matthew Small
Joe Rinehart - are you out there?

Hi everyone,

As my subject states, I am trying to consume a .Net webservice
in CF. I've been reading Joe Rinehart's article in CFDJ about passing an
actual object (CFC) to the webservice, and I *think* I've created the
correct CFCs as objects to pass, but I keep getting back argument type
mismatch or parameter not found errors when doing so. Here's what I've
got:

.NET Webservice method:

WebMethod()

Public Function MailSend (

ByVal Server As String,

ByVal From As String,

ByVal templateSubject As String,

ByVal templateBodyText As String,

ByVal Emails As Email())

As String()

As you can see, all of the parameters are strings except for Emails(). This
is an array of Email objects, which is a .NET that I've created.

This is the structure of the Email class:

EmailName As String

EmailAddress As String

TemplateSubjectReplacements As NameValuePair()

TemplateBodyReplacements As NameValuePair()

One more thing here - NameValuePair is another structure that I've created
for the purpose of allowing a set of parameters to be sent to the
webservice.

So to summarize this process:

CF builds an email template and sends it to the webservice. It also
builds an array of email objects that contain the email address, actual
name, and a list of things to replace in the email template so every email
going out is completely customized. The webservice gets this information
and does the parsing and replacement, then hands it off to the email server.

Any help of this?

Thank you,

Matthew Small

Ooh, this is interesting - and timely as I'm currently wrestling with
java.lang.outOfMemoryError errors at the moment.

Is there any way of telling how much 'permanent' memory (as set by MaxPermSize)
is being used?

I read that if you have a lot of files in /cfusionmx/wwwroot/WEB-INF/cfclasses/
you will need a larger MaxPermSize but how much is a lot? The files on disk
weigh in at 29.6Mb - is that a fair measure of how much they would occupy in
memory?

Re: CFmail and receiving 1 copy

2005-01-14 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
Why not simply do this:

cfmail to = #me#
  from = #mailfrom#
  subject = Greetings
  blah, blah
/cfmail

cfmail query=mail_roster
  to = #student#
  from = #mailfrom#
  subject = Greetings
  blah, blah
/cfmail

In that case, each cfmail tag is cohesive, in that it can be allowed
to work as designed for a more narrow purpose without having to work
out unusual or creative workarounds for its innate features.

If you have to add tweaky things to the CFMAIL tag, which can have
enough bugs of it's own, then perhaps executing 2 calls (especially
since each call has an entirely different purpose, method, and
attribute set) is really the best idea.

Re: OT: Homesite enhancement project?

2005-01-14 Thread Spike
Robert Munn wrote:
 Spike,

Glad to see you are actively soliciting input. Here's my list:

 - A good data browser. Sean suggested DBEdit, I'll have a look at it.

There are quite a few out there. I've used Quantum and JFaceDBC. Both
did all I needed, but I found setting up drivers a bit of a pain, so I'm
always looking for better alternatives to point people to. I currently
use Quantum.

 - Multiple file/folder panes. Maybe I'm lazy but I find the two file/folder
pane feature of HS+ to be really convenient. That was such a big deal when it
 was added to HS+.

We have talked about this and we're still looking for use cases to see
exactly how people currently use it. It could very well be that we can
do something better by adding features to a single view. The most common
use case is people wanting to keep track of where they are in the file
system when working with multiple files. We already have a right-click
menu option that allows you to find the current file in either the
navigator view or the file explorer view.

What do you use the multiple views for?

 - Split file/folder panes. Possible with CFE today? The DW layout really bugs
me, and personally I think it represents very poor usability. Here we spend
all this time learning to build usable Web sites that don't scroll, and we
end up with an IDE with endless scrolling. It would be really cool if the
 panes were detachable.

We already have split file/folder in the file explorer view and we plan
to create a new project navigator view that can work this way as well as
having ftp support in the context menu.

 - VSS integration

There is a VSS plugin available here:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vssplugin/

I don't use VSS, so I can't comment on whether it's any good or not.

Have you tried it?

 - Something like the Tag Inspector pane in HS+. I don't use it all THAT
often, but I find it comes in really handy on occasion, especially when
 looking at someone else's code.

We have an Outline view that does something similar to the Tag
Inspector. We could certainly expand it to cover some more of the
feature set of the Tag Inspector if enough people want it.

 - The current top 10 on CFEclipse look good, although I would have put the CFC
thing lower given that the server can do that already.

ok.

Most of all, above everything else, I would like a system that is well
documented and comes with an easy-to-install, well understood baseline
package. I have downloaded and setup Eclipse on a bunch of machines, and yet
I just downloaded it (3.01) to install on my laptop and I got a JVM
terminated. Exit code=1 error. I have no idea what that means and I'm not
inclined to look right now. I need a package I can download that will just
 work when I install it.

That's a pretty reasonable request and we've been chatting about
providing a packaged solution.

I presume by now you've seen Rob's blog:

http://www.robrohan.com/blog/index.cfm?mode=entryentry=14994065-D86C-DE08-A0395AD015D50C8B

We're also working on the documentation and troubleshooting side of things.

Re: CFmail and receiving 1 copy

2005-01-14 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
True, Calvin... and sometimes you get really great advice!

Sometimes you end up with a mishmash of options that just mean you
know less than you started out with. Gotta love it.

But as a side note, I've done things like all 4 of the below, thinking
I was doing really great stuff by altering the behaviors of things to
be creative in my development. What you generally end up with is
something that's cool and unique, and hard to support, and easily
broken.

If you've got 2 separate cfmail tags, you can tell at a glance what
each does, you have no extra code to read thru to remember what you
did or figure out what someone else did, you have 2 tags that execute
as purposed, each of those tags executes quite efficiently, and
there's nothing else going on.

Of ALL the options we've discussed, other than 2 separate tags and
individual emails to each student, the only other option I'd really go
for is:
cfmail to=[EMAIL PROTECTED] bcc=#valueList(student_query)#

And that I'd want to test, VERY thouroughly, to insure that on the off
chance I end up with a student_query that's over 1,000 records I
wasn't going to bomb the app. And I'd include a failto= attribute (if
you're using 6.1 anyway) in case the messages fail.

If you use 2 separate tags, each student gets their own copy, which is
essentially how cfmail was intended to work in the first place. If
you use the BCC attribute, you're handing the responsibility for the
success of a much larger single operation off to an external system
(the mail server), whereas if you use single emails from 2 cfmail tags
you can be relatively certain that (being a simpler, smaller act of
sending on mail to one recip for each row in the query) it will
succeed.

If I were going for creative I'd say hell yeah, do it however and
tell us what nifty thing it was. I used to do that. At this point, I
get more satisfaction from developing something that's
standards-based, rock-solid, and as self-contained and cohesive as
possible.

Ain't tellin ya what to do, just why I'd do what I'd do.

Laterz,
J

Re: CFmail and receiving 1 copy

2005-01-14 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
I did just think of one other option that may not be so bad...

if you init a counter at 0:

cfset counter=0

and then use a conditional loop:

cfloop condition = counter EQ query.recordcount
cfmail to=

Nope, still ain't gonna cut it.

It's a bunch of extra code and work when the functionality to just
send it out is already there...

Well, I tried to find a funky way that was better but I still can't
convince myself that when a tool is built in to the system, there's a
reasonable way to do the same work by altering the system's built-in
methods.

Oh well...

Back to sequence diagrams... fun fun!

J

Re: OT: Homesite enhancement project?

2005-01-14 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
There's a few things that I've been frustrated with about both CFS,
HS+, and DW... but like Spike said... working is subjective. If they
say it does this and costs this much and you pay that much and it
does... then it works. And DWMX 2k4 is FAR superior to DWMX. Upgrade
if you can.

There's some things that just don't make sense to me about DW 2k4,
though. Like the lack of integration between the Behaviors tab,
cfinput tags, and CFMX's built-in JS validation generator. Those
things are linked for us, directly linked, and to have DW refuse to
recognize a named CFINPUT tag, a named CFFORM tag, etc., really struck
me as being broken or even incomplete. But, I use both DW 2k4 and
HS+, in tandem, and I don't mind either one.

I mean, there's things about every IDE that I hate, or dislike, or am
annoyed by, or had to learn to work around. When someone invents the
perfect IDE for something, please let me know and I'll give you every
bit of money I can scrape together for it. I think HS:neural would be
cool... HomeSite with a neural interface... nifty.

Another thing that just never made any sense is the fact that desktop
integration for RDS/FTP is built in, but you can't use it for anything
but browsing. Why on earth do I want a Macromedia RDSFTP icon in my
computer when I can't use it to upload or download files? Maybe I've
been doing something wrong all these years, but for me, even back in
the CFStudio 4.0 days... it never friggin worked right.

And yeah, after reading Sean's post about the wishlist and bugfix
pages, I'll do that. I think these things seem so obvious to me that
the fact that they don't work as expected leaves me feeling a
little... suspicious or disgusted... but I'm an adaptable guy, and
since I have a place to make my beef known, I'll take it there.

Laterz,
J

Dynamic CF PDFs problem - please help

2005-01-14 Thread Stephen Hait
For the past two years we have had an application that
dynamically populates a PDF form that must be printed, signed
and mailed. About 3 weeks ago we started getting one or two
reports per day of problems users were having when trying to
view the PDF. The most common problem reported was Error
opening document.

We have been unable to reproduce this error ourselves so
troubleshooting has been fairly fruitless. If anyone knows of a
reason this may have suddenly become a problem, we'd like to
hear it. Here's a template with links to the dynamically populated
form as well as the actual PDF form file and the contents of the
FDF stream that feeds the PDF if you have a few moments to
test it and have Acrobat Reader 5 or newer:

http://www.hopeaviation.com/pilotform/test/index.cfm

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Stephen

Jon,
My recommendation is to build it right into your application. Any other
form tends not be used or kept current. If your site has content mgmt
already included, this can be used for field, screen and task level
documentation. Since you will have to add the links to your app anyway, the
actual page maintenance doesn't need to be a separate app.

My 2 cents. If I deserve change back, so be it.

RE: OT: Homesite enhancement project?

2005-01-14 Thread Calvin Ward
Dreamweaver has the find the current file option as well, This changes the
focus of the file panel and results in losing your place in the file
structure, which is also undesirable when you just want to know what file
you are in. Of course if there were multiple file panels, maybe this
wouldn't be as potentially disruptive.

The other value of dividing the files and folders is quickness of navigation
and being able to easily see where in the file structure you are in the file
panel itself.

RE: CFmail and receiving 1 copy

2005-01-14 Thread Calvin Ward
In addition to the options you get in the discussion, you also get
discussion of the options, and we all learn from it :)

Actually, of the four, I prefer the Add record to the record set solution
best, since you don't muddy the usage of the cfmail code, and additionally
you get exactly what was sent to the other recipients.

The other solutions aren't as ideal for various reasons, in my opinion.

Laterz,
J

RE: Blackstone: when?

2005-01-14 Thread Michael Dinowitz
Actually, Blackstone is built on the same base as CFMX 6.1. Think of it as a
bug fix upgrade with a lot of new and cool features. This will (or should)
remove the fear people have about moving to a new version of CF before the
next update. This is the update. This is the next level past 6.1
Yes, there will be many who will still be afraid but let me tell you, it's
fantastic. I've been running it on HoF since early beta and it's faster and
more stable than 5 by far. How much faster than 6.1 I can't tell but it
handles a lot.
If you want public docs, look at Ben Forta's blog
(http://www.forta.com/blog/) where he's been talking about specific features
with code. Also check out the MM site itself
(http://www.macromedia.com/software/coldfusion/blackstone/).

MM has been publicly dedicated to backwards compatability so shouldn't
be any syntax changes to run your MX stuff on blackstone. That being
said I doubt anyone is going to give you the documentation due to NDA
stuff...could be wrong though I guess...

Re: CFmail and receiving 1 copy

2005-01-14 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
OK, I'll go with you on that one...

And thinking about it again, you don't have to handle the email
content twice, either. You basically extend the concept of recipient
by adding yourself to it.

I've been buried in studying OO these days, so I'm thinking
differently than I did for a long time. If you add yourself to the
recipient list, you have to abstract the idea of recipient from the
idea of student because all recipients aren't students.

In this case, then, me and student extend recipients, since the
desired result is to get an email to all the recipients. me IS-A
recipient and student IS-A recipient but me IS-NOT a
student.

So wouldn't this put me in a class by myself?

Hehe, ok, that was lame, but somehow I just couldn't resist...

RE: CFmail and receiving 1 copy

2005-01-14 Thread Calvin Ward
I just prefer not having the two calls, since the objective is to receive
what your recipients receive, and any changes to the one cfmail must also be
made to the other cfmail. By simply adding your email to the recordset you
ensure that you only have one place to make changes.

I recognize that a variable is likely to be used for email body and subject,
but I'm also thinking about such changes as adding enctype, attachments,
setting type to html, having alternate email methods, etc.

There's nothing inherently wrong with two email calls, I just like to think
ahead as far as reasonable and if the solution doesn't call for significant
extra work, then planning for some eventualities can be helpful during the
70% of the application's lifecycle that constitutes the maintenance phase...

no caching pages.

2005-01-14 Thread Ian Skinner
I have a couple of questions about applying code to not cache pages.

As recommended by the austere group, the following code should prevent data
being stored in the browser's cache.

cfheader name=expires value=0
cfheader name=Cache-Control value=no-cache
cfheader name=Pragma value=no-cache

First question is how robust is this across the wide verity of browsers? I
have implemented this and experimented with IE and Firefox and it seems to work
well, but I know I will be questioned on this by our technically illiterate
quality assurance watch dogs and I really don't have much knowledge on this
functionality. Links to resources always welcome.

Second question, are these the equivalent of writing Meta tags? This could be
useful when creating pure HTML content.

meta name=expires value=0 for example
meta name=Cache-Control value=no-cache
meta name=Pragma value=no-cache

Re: Dynamic CF PDFs problem - please help

2005-01-14 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
Stephen,

I just hit your test page, and the PDF form came up, the contents of
the FDF came up... same as Doug.

But when I clicked on the link to the FDF, I got the Reader splash
screen, and then nothing. Blank screen. No content at all. No errors
either... but I'm not sure that's a good thing. I used the FireFox
Page Info dialogue to save the FDF to my desktop and when I opened it
in Reader, nothing at all came up there either, just a blank, gray,
empty Reader screen.

Have you considered working a few cflog tags into your pilotform.cfm file?

If you want to try something, you can check out my MIME-based document
delivery system for ideas... it's at:
http://www.web-relevant.com/pdfView/index.cfm

The system is oriented toward delivering content from a base64 encoded
DB text table, but the example uses a PDF which is streamed back to
the browser in a CFM page with cfcontent and cfheader making Acrobat
think it's a PDF file... source code is downloadable from the link
provided.

I am using FireFox 1 and what Adobe calls Core 6.2 for Acrobat
Reader, running on WindowsXP SP-2. If he's on IE, it's not the
browser.

Doug: Which reader version do you have? I opened Reader, went to
Help:About... and clicked on the version a couple times to get it to
give me the Core: version number.

Let me know if you need anything else... happy to help if I can.

Laterz,
J

2005-01-14 Thread Micha Schopman
Oh ofcourse he has. I have no insight whatsoever, but I can imagine you don't
know about everything within a club of 1000+ employees.

I have submitted several extensive reports through the MM website bug
submission form. Bugs, described in detail with complete steps to reproduce. So
I have in fact done my own part, notify something is wrong, and I cannot do
more than submitting reports.

The part of engineers not being aware, has been confirmed by an engineer
himself. Asking the engineer when do you plan to fix bug A, bug B and bug C
were replied with what bugs? ...

As a customer this makes me think excuse me?. It is not that I am angry, I am
just dissapointed and astonished. I cannot imagine no one ever had problems
with the treeview part, the welcoming screen staying on top of the coding
canvas, crashes when searching through folders, not being able to cut/copy/past
files without the message file already exists and the targetfolder had just
been created.

I can imagine, when you have bugs that occur on very odd actions, or occur on
such a low scale, you say as a company this bug involves too much time and
money to be fixed .. but the bugs I submitted were of the type occuring very
often.

Re: CFmail and receiving 1 copy

2005-01-14 Thread Jared Rypka-Hauer - CMG, LLC
There's nothing wrong with two calls to CFMAIL...

In fact, there's still something to be said for letting one call be a
1-to-1 operation and the other call be a query-driven operation,
allowing CFMAIL to do each thing seperately as intended.

But Calvin has a point, in that it makes for 2 points to update, if need be.

It isn't really reasonable to debate the viability of either way
without discussing a slightly larger view of the system. What
surrounds this cfmail operation? Is there a unified process that
creates all the parameters that drives it? Can 2 calls to CFMAIL be
created with the same set of parameters being provided by other
sources?

Many of these design decisions are driven by context and specific
need... without a little more context, it's difficult to say which is
best.

If you had a SendCfmail class that took all of its parameters from the
caller, then issuing 2 calls successively could be done without worry
that things would change between them. In that case, separate
SendCfmail messages could be sent, one with a query object being
passed in and one with an individual recipient.

However, if your focus was on the recipient class, you could argue
that adding yourself to the recipients would be more in line with the
process's intent, and the addToQuery(me) call would be more
appropriate.

It entirely depends on the context, forces, and requirements of the situation.

YMMV, but that's why I've become a huge proponent of models and OO
lately... it answers those questions before you're too invested in one
method, only to find out that it doesn't work quite like you wanted
to.

J

RE: Multivalued Array help

2005-01-14 Thread Adrian Lynch
You'd use a structure, arrays in CF are indexed with intergers, structure
have character keys.

cfscript
item = StructNew();
item.level = level;
item.ecs = expanded;
item.dn = dn;
item.rdn = rdn[1];
item.icon = icon;
cfscript

!--- Have a look at the item ---
cfdump var=#item#

If you want to preserve the case of the struct keys, user item[level]
syntax instead.

Hello,
If I wanted to do a multi-valued array in php I would initialize the
array like this, how would I do this in ColdFusion?

Thanks,
- Charles

PHP Example --
$item = array(
  'level'= $level,
  'ecs' = $expanded,
  'dn'= $dn,
  'rdn'= $rdn[0],
  'icon'= $icon,
);

RE: John Dowdell Wants to Know What's Wrong with Macromedia

2005-01-14 Thread Tangorre, Michael
 From: Micha Schopman [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Oh ofcourse he has. I have no insight whatsoever, but I can
imagine you don't know about everything within a club of
 1000+ employees.

Nor could assume that all the engineers see every bug report!

I have submitted several extensive reports through the MM
website bug submission form. Bugs, described in detail with
complete steps to reproduce. So I have in fact done my own
part, notify something is wrong, and I cannot do more than
 submitting reports.

I am sure there is some kind of formula that dictates what number of
occurrences prompts further investigation. Just because you have the
issue does not mean everyone does. The more people that report the
problem the greater the possibility it gets looked into further.

The part of engineers not being aware, has been confirmed by
an engineer himself. Asking the engineer when do you plan to
fix bug A, bug B and bug C were replied with what bugs? ...

Again, one engineer not being in_the_know as to every bug is not
uncommon. I would imagine they get discussed in some kind of fashion,
evaluated and the appropriate people are informed of the action being
taken, if any at all.

As a customer this makes me think excuse me?. It is not
that I am angry, I am just dissapointed and astonished. I
cannot imagine no one ever had problems with the treeview
part, the welcoming screen staying on top of the coding
canvas, crashes when searching through folders, not being
able to cut/copy/past files without the message file already
exists and the targetfolder had just been created.

Again YMMV. I have not run into all the things you mentioned; that is
not to say they don't exist but if only a people report it how can MM
make the case to investigate it ahead of other things being reported.

I can imagine, when you have bugs that occur on very odd
actions, or occur on such a low scale, you say as a company
this bug involves too much time and money to be fixed ..
but the bugs I submitted were of the type occuring very often.

The amount of feedback probably triggers further response Which
makes sense. You are doing your part in reporting to MM in detail the
issues you encounter. When enough people report to MM or the higher
priority issues are resolved I bet they do look into yours.

Mike

I've always used cfheader name=expires value=#now()#

But that's that I've always done, and it's always worked fairly well...

One thing I've never been able to accomplish is make a page, like some

wondered how they accomplish that.

I know IE has some trouble with caching in that it ignores some of the
meta tags that control local page caching... ahh, here's the link. Old

Combined version of Eclipse + plugins for Windows?

2005-01-14 Thread Damien McKenna
With someone building a combined version of Eclipse with plugins for
MacOSX, has anyone managed to create an install of Eclipse with the
following plugins that they'd be willing to share?
- cfeclipse
- phpeclipse
- fusebox4cfe
- svneclipse
- a CSS plugin of choice
- a database plugin of choice with support for MySQL, PostgreSQL and MS
SQL Server.

That'd be quite, quite cool and would probably get a good many people to
seriously try Eclipse, I would (again).

PS. Yes, I'd give Eclipse a go again if someone built this, my reason
for dropping Eclipse and going back to Homesite was due to plugin
problems not Eclipse itself.

Thanks in advance :-)

Putting cfcode inside a database

2005-01-14 Thread Jay McEntire
All-

I know this has been a question for some... So I've taken the liberty
to find a cool solution.

Say I want to put some cf code inside a database and then retieve the
code and execute it. How do I do that? Well, there really isn't a
way to do that, but I did find a way to cheat a little.

cfsetting showdebugoutput=no

!--- this represents my database var ---
cfsavecontent variable=test
ef_includes = /admin/test1.cfm,/admin/test2.cfm /

!-- html and stuff --
table width=100% border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0
  tr
tdhi/td
tdbye/td
  /tr
/table
/cfsavecontent

cfset str = ReFind(ef_includes = (.*?) /, test, 1, TRUE)
cfif ArrayLen(str.pos) GT 1
cfset ef_include = Mid(test, str.pos[1], str.len[1])
cfset includes = Replace(Mid(test, str.pos[2], str.len[2]), chr(34),
, ALL)
cfset includeArray = ListToArray(includes, ,)

cfloop from=1 to=#ArrayLen(includeArray)# index=i
cfinclude template=#includeArray[i]#
/cfloop

cfoutput
#Replace(test, ef_include, )#
/cfoutput
/cfif

---

This code shows how you could make a ficticious tag to store
references to cfm include file. Then using ReFind, you can extract
the references, use a if statement to include your cfm files, then
output the rest of your normal html. :)

This, i think, is faster and easier then writing the code to a cfm
file using cffile.

Comments appreciated!

Jay

OT: Suggestion for developers of code editors

2005-01-14 Thread Damien McKenna
I've got a small suggestion for people who are developing code editors
or plugins for them (e.g. Eclipse) to cope with specific languages (e.g.
cfeclipse). It will be more work but I think it'll be definitely worth
the hassle. My idea is to have different releases of your editor /
plugin for different revisions of the language in question. An example
would be having a revision of the syntax highlighting / code insight
portion of eclipse for different revisions of ColdFusion, that way
someone with CF5 can have a version tailored to their needs while
someone with Blackstone can get support for all of the modifications
along the way. I guess it might be more useful for PHP where they
change function syntax a bit more, but still.

When I explored that, at least my bank, uses JavaScript. You initialize a time
object, and when that object is fired it calls a function that opens a window
with the desired content. I've got a simple version, that just relocates that
page, but you can do anything you want in to triggered function.

Re: Could not connect JRun Server

2005-01-14 Thread Nathan Strutz
I used to have the same issue, and it can be a large variety of
different things that cause it.

As for the iisreset tool, try:
iisreset -kill
It's a little undocumented, but it works.

Other than that, I'll offer a bit of advice. It's probably either:
1) Connector issue. Use the wsconfig tool to destroy rebuild the
connector. Worst case: upgrade to win2k3 or move to linux.
2) Load issue. Too much traffic on your web or database server, or
another external system. Worst case: load balance.
3) Bad CF coding in general can break a cf server. Worst case: rewrite.

What if you wanted to change those Desktop's to something cheaper, more
secure, or for some other reason (thin client ?) ?
Your app has added to the switching costs, for no good reason.

No - we simply don't (and won't) change those desktops!

Although the cost of the desktops, in isolation, might be cheaper, the
infrastructure costs alone would dwarf that savings out of the gate. When
you've got 3 or 4 hundred people trained to manage windows desktops, install
windows desktops, configure windows desktops and diagnose windows desktops
there really is no cheaper alternative.

The physical costs alone of physically addressing many thousand desktops
across several dozen offices (not to mention several hundred affiliate
offices) would be massive.

It's the total project cost that kills you, not the cost of the desktops.

So, if you're set on the your desktop then it only makes sense to leverage
that choice.

In my current case QA for the application will account for roughly 40% of
the total project cost. That's QA on a single platform. To also QA another
platform would extend that by perhaps a quarter or a third (I assume that
only the UI would need to be tested).

On this project that might mean something like $40,000 extra. One one of
our larger projects it could mean millions extra.

All that being said I agree completely that whereever possible you should:

1) Understand when you're using a platform-specific feature and be able to
defend that choice (if it costs as much to complete the same functionality
in a cross-platform way then that should be done).

2) Encapsulate your platform-specific code as much as possible. This allows
you to replace that code more easily in the unlikely case that you might
have to.

In my case I'm using IE (HTA-specific) code to fetch XML-data (for example)
but then I place that data into a DOM container for use. The fetch code
could be modified to work (for example) in Firefox pretty simply, but the
usage code should already work as is.

The fetch code is encapsulated into a distinct JavaScript object (as is the
parsing code for that matter). I know where my dependencies lie.

I also know that a lot of people DON'T work this way - and I think they
should. The ability (via choice or corporate mandate) to utilize a single
platform doesn't mean you should ignore all others.
