Re: [Chevelle-list] 66 327
I think if you look again, it's the number "1". The letter "I" was used to represent the number "1" on pre 69 engine build date stampings but beginning in 1969 the number "1" was beginning to be used; like these http://chevellestuff.net/1969/engines/index.htm. A suffix code of "IHA" makes no sense and neither would a data of T052 - not enough numbers to make a mm/dd code. Dealers would not have installed a warranty engine with a date coded and suffix stamped engine. The warranty was only 2 years or 24000 miles for 1966 Chevelles. Sounds more like someone stamped a 1969 engine suffix code (or tried to) on the engine block but without a photo. If you have a photo of the engine pad, could email it to me off list at ad...@chevellestuff.net? Other Chevelles 65-68 an SS can be identified in the VIN code. The Protect-O-Plate first appeared in 1965, so there would be no such thing for the 1964 model year. Only certain options were coded (not all options) and different years showed different options. Only in 1969 and 1970 can it be used to identify an SS-optioned Chevelle by looking at the original engine code since all 69-70 Chevelle SS-optioned Chevelles came with a performance-oriented 396 or 454 and that engine code is on the POP. When the SS option became more of a dress-up option than a performance one in 1971-72, both 350 engines as well as the 402 engine could be ordered with or without the SS option so the presence of these engine codes is not a way to tell; only the 454 engine in both 1971-72 were available with the SS option exclusively. They were to be thrown away after they were used but many guys simply stuffed them in the seats, doors, above the glove box or gas tank and anywhere else they could hide them. So if you can't find your build sheet it's because someone else did many years ago and tossed it or the guys on the line that day were doing their job correctly and disposing of your sheets correctly. These sheets have all your options on them and thus can identify a real 69-72 SS. Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 chevelle
The numbers of interest would be on the top of the frame rail. Those on the side are the mfg. number and date, the top of the frame rail will have the partial VIN. However, the partial VIN is of no use in determining whether it was born with the SS option or not; a match would only mean the frame is original to the car. But, see http://chevellestuff.net/qd/frames.htm for the locations of previously found partial VINs on the frame. See http://chevellestuff.net/1969/69ss.htm for more on the 1969 SS option. Does either the engine or 4-speed have a partial VIN stamped on them? If they are original to the car and match the car's VIN, that should suffice. Dale

Honestly I didn't pay as much attention to the Chevelles as I did the others. None really caught my eye and I see a lot of them at the Chevelle-specific shows I go to. Rick, I would imagine he's talking Hughes satellite, it's also offered through DirecTV and maybe even Dish, don't know. Good I suppose if your area doesn't have any cable service or access to DSL. Download times may be acceptable (like DSL) but uploads are really slow. I have cable here in Lawton for Internet, TV and now phone. Not as fast as others (10MB down, 1MB up) but it's the fastest available here and since I do a lot of uploading for my web sites, DSL or satellite was never an option for me. You say you want to get TV from the Internet.how are you connecting to the Internet now if not by DSL, cable, or satellite? I have both satellite and cable. Re: [Chevelle-list] (no subject)
It could be that no vendors are advertising it or even offering it; maybe because Windows Virtual PC no longer requires a hardware enabled CPU to run in XP or 32-bit mode as Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 did - apparently two different products. 64-bit is pretty much becoming the standard for new PCs and CPUs. I bought Windows 7 Pro a few months ago and it comes with both 32- and 64-bit DVDs. I installed the 64-bit version initially. That's when I discovered you needed a CPU with hardware virtualization to run 32-bit programs with Virtual PC 2007. So, I reloaded the drive with the 32-bit version so I could run my old software. Now that Windows Virtual PC is not suppose to be hardware dependant I may reinstall the 64-bit version and test it. On the MS website they still show 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Home Premium for sale. In either case I'm sure you need the Pro version to run Windows Virtual PC as I just tried to download the software to my laptop (with 64-bit home version) and got a dialog box saying I needed the Pro version to run it. Back in the day, machine shops I used for this kind of stuff was generally a well equipped parts store with a machine shop in the rear. Almost everyone got "dealer" pricing on parts anyway but if a person wanted to bring their own parts in to be installed it usually meant no warranty. Re: [Chevelle-list] Tires for my 67
No - Circumfrence was the designer of the knights' round table or was the Sir Cumfrence? Circumference is the boundary line of a circle. Sorry, couldn't pass it up. :*) Dale _ Did I spell circumfrence correctly???
Re: [Chevelle-list] Tires for my 67
Wouldn't a 70 series tire give a narrower tread footprint than a 65 series tire for a given size? A comparable 215/65R15 and 215/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A shows a 7.0-inch tread width for the 65 series and 6.4-inch read width for the 70 series. Technically the blanket statement that *any* tire size change will affect your speedometer reading is correct but as long as you keep the overall diameter within .1 or .2 of the original, you shouldn't notice a difference. Even with the 205/65R15 your speedometer will only read 0.1% too fast. At a real 65mph *real* speed your speedometer will read 65.65. A taller 205/70R15 is .8" taller and will make your speedometer 3.1% too slow; a 65mph reading on your speedometer would really be 67mph. I've owned a lot of 67 Chevelles and if you can read their sweep speedometers within 2mph, you're doing pretty good! :*) You might check my web page at http://chevellestuff.com/tools/tire_calc.htm. Just plug in the 195/75R14 in the Stock tire size and play with the New tire size. It'll compare Sidewall, Radius, Diameter, Circumference, and Revs per mile for each size and report how slow or fast your speedometer will read as a percentage. One should be aware that 'calculations' don't always reflect the real world and tire manufacturer's differ a bit and many tire sizes just aren't readily available. Looking at the same BF Goodrich Radial T/A chart doesn't list a 205/65R15 size but does list a 225/60R15 which is .1-inch taller and would make your speedometer read 0.4% too slow. Play with the calculator then find your favorite tire mfg and see what they offer. Their high horsepower unit (up to 450hp is just under $1800 - http://www.phoenixtrans.com/html/gmtrans.html. Naturally if you're nowhere close by Texas, I'm sure there are other shops just as capable. There are a lot of aftermarket disc brake companies as well and most are pretty good. Building a high horsepower engine, you shouldn't skimp on brakes. Expect a good disc brake setup to run anywhere from $700 to $1500 depending on company. Don't settle for some $395 eBay special. Baer is on the higher end but have excellent products. MP Brakes (mpbrakes.com), Classic Performance (classicperform.com), Inline Tube (inlinetube.com), and I'm sure there are more offer basic kits from around $700 up or a bit more if you want power disc. Your tire size will have some effect on the rear end gear you might want to choose. A page at my site, http://chevellestuff.com/tools/rpm_calculator.htm, will let you play around with tire sizes and rear end ratios based on your transmission selection. Transmission gear ratios are shown for the most popular GM transmissions; just plug in your rear tire size (such as 235x60x15), a rear axle ratio (like 3.55), a highway speed (like 75mph) and it'll calculate your RPM. Be aware there will some slippage with an automatic so numbers won't be exact but they'll be relative regardless of ratio, tire size, etc. selected. Taking my car for example, TH350, 3.36 rear end, 235x60x15 tires and at 75mph it calculates to 3245 rpm where my tach shows about 3500. Changing to a 700R4 (and nothing else) with the overdrive ratio the rpms drop calculates to 2270 at 75mph. I could run as low as a 4.56 gear and still only be turning 3100 at 75mph with the o/d. I do not need the high end brakes just better than drums can offer. I am also thinking about a March serpentine belt system. Of course, next comes the rear end rebuild with a posi-unit. Re: [Chevelle-list] I need advice
Depends on where you are as to what shop I'd recommend for a 700R4 - or any transmission. I've heard good things about Phoenix Transmission in Weatherford, TX. and had them install one in my old 67 SS396. The Competition Plus is/was different than the Super Shifter. The Super Shifter was a 'generic' unit and sat the housing in a straight line with the shift rods with the installation kit (rods, shift arms, etc.) being the only difference between various transmissions. The Comp Plus is/was a 'bolt-in' to replace the original Muncie unit with installation kits and shifter body tailored to specific applications. The shift handle on the 68 unit is shown to be bent about 1" toward the driver half-way up the handle. Isn't this bend applicable to the original unit? Interior photos I have of 68s with a console appear to show a bend. Could it be you might have the wrong installation kit or shift tower? Maybe a 64-67 unit or a 69-72 unit? My 2005 Hurst .PDF shows a 68 with a Muncie is different from 64-67 and 69-72 units. Installation kit (373 3163) is the same as 64-67 due to the attachment arms but the shifter only (391 8014) is the same as the 69-72 Muncie units. Re: [Chevelle-list] Help please withTransmission codes
Joe, Looks like your transmission is made of different pieces and that's not uncommon. 3846429 is the number for a 63-65 tail housing, driver side speedometer, 27 spline 3925660 is the number for 1968-1970 main case R9R27B is a mystery. Is this a stamped sequence or a casting? The only way to really insure it has a M22 gear setup in it is to pull the side cover and inspect the cut of the gears. While it's true much of the information can be found online, it is convenient to have all of it in one place. While most of the years are not complete with some optional equipment and some data may be outdated after publication, it is data published by Chevrolet and is generally good until someone can disprove it with other GM documentation. Re: [Chevelle-list] 1969 SS Spare in Trunk
The spare wheel always matched the four mounted on the car, be they SS wheels or not discounting space saver wheels of course. I assume the spare wheel was mounted with the tire fill valve down was a conscious decision to (1) maintain uniformity, (2) possibly to keep the "J" hook as short as possible and/or (3) to keep the jack base below the level of the tire. Think about it, if the wheel were face up the "J" hook would need to be longer and force the jack base to be sitting on top of the wheel and on a SS wheel that would be a very small spot where the center cap hole is & tend to mar the surface. The 1969 AIM does show two configurations on the SS wheel storage from the "J" hook and jack base through the center of the wheel on one to showing the "J" hook coming through a wheel stud hole and the base is stored under the wheel/tire along with the mast and wrench stored in different locations. [Chevelle-list] Speedometer cable hole
I'm looking for data on 67 Chevelles concerning the speedometer cable hole in the firewall. The 66 model year may also apply. I have a 67 El Camino that originally came with a Powerglide and the hole in the firewall for the speedometer cable is just below the steering column. Question #1. Would I be correct in assuming the 3-speed manual use the same hole as the Powerglide? I also know (I think) the 4-speed speedometer cable enters the firewall on the passenger side. Question #2. Would (or should) the firewall have provisions for both cable locations? My Fremont-built El Camino (w/PG) does not have a hole on the passenger side. Question #3. Would (or should) a 4-speed car with speedometer cable hole on passenger side have the hole on the driver side and just have it plugged or would it even be present? Then. Where is the hole in your firewall for the speedometer cable? What year? What plant? What factory transmission? Thanks! Dale

Naturally, disconnect the hoses and sender wiring before removing and maybe even flush out the tank with water if possible and let sit for a day or two with the cap off to help ventilate before dropping the old one. A floor jack and either a thin piece of plywood or thick cardboard between the jack head and tank to spread the weight when dropping the old tank. A buddy helping to keep the tank on the jack would be nice too. Re: [Chevelle-list] VIN numbers matching
No, none of should. The tag on the firewall is the Fisher Body number plate (aka trim tag, cowl tag, etc.) while the VIN plate on the A-pillar is the Chevrolet identification from GM. Body numbers are generally sequential by particular STYLE shown on the trim tag while the VIN plate is sequential per plant in production order regardless of series or body style. Another misconception is the Style number on the trim tag indicates a V8 or L6 engine -- it does not. The first 5 numbers of the VIN do indicate if it was born with a V8 or L6 and the body style (sport coupe, conv., pickup, wagon, etc.) but the Style number on the trim tag is a different animal. Asked for suggestions on troubleshooting "no spark" from an HEI distributor. After much aggravation & blind alleys I got it running today. I had 3 modules checked by parts store (all good) , 4 coils all ohms checked the same so I assumed that they were good. Tried various combinations of modules & coils to no avail. Last monday I found the radio fuse in my fuse box blown. I was sure that I had checked for 12V at the distributor previously- but maybe I didn't. I have the HEI connected to the ACC position in my fuse box & this is fed by the radio fuse.Dummy me! Thought I had it licked. I replaced the fuse and then reassembled my distributor. Took my time to get it right. Even ohms checked the wire harness, pickup & capacitor to make sure that they were all good.Once done, with SUPREME confidence I twisted the key. WTF - NO GO! Nothing , not even a hint of wanting to start. To say I was frustrated was an understatement.Left it alone all week. Today I went out to look at it again, starting from square one. Checked 12V at connector in fuse box - OK. Went to dist to check for 12V. Disconnected Tach & Power wires at distributor. 12 V -fine. Reconnected power to HEI. Connected timing light ( to a different plug wire) was gonna check for spark. Went around to door to crank it, while holding timing lite. Hit the key - and it STARTED first kick! Scared the crap out of me. WTF - once more. Went for a test drive. Everything was great, except I had forgot to reconnect the tach and it was dead. Stopped at K-Mart to buy some stakes for Christmas Lights. When I came out, I popped the hood to reconnect the tach wire. Climbed in, hit key - NOTHING AGAIN!. Genius that I am, I quickly opened the hood and disconnected the tach. STARTED RIGHT UP! Came home - reconnected tach wire - and no start.BAD TACH - UGH! Thats my story and I'm stickin to it!

Re: [Chevelle-list] 67 shifting
The 700R4 shifting issues depend on what shifter you plan on using. When I put a 700R4 in place of the 4-speed in my old 67 I used a B&M Quicksilver ratchet shifter and had a bracket made to position the shift handle to come through the 4-speed's original location. I'd already had a custom console built with the 4-speed location retained and didn't want to modify the entire console to accommodate a different location. If you're going to use a stock-type TH400 console, Shiftworks.com has a replacement shifter for TH350/TH400 that eliminates the rod linkage in favor of a cable. That might just work for a 700R4 as well; might not be able to get to low gear manually due to the detents and stops but that's not clear on the website. Kind of confusing on their site but they also show the console lens with (what looks like) "P R N O D L2 L1" for 66/67 consoles so maybe their conversion kit does work on O/D transmissions. Convenience of the cable is the shifter bolts to the floor as normal and the cable only requires a small hole forward of the shifter instead of large hole on the side of the tunnel for mechanical rod linkage. I don't have specific measurements for the cable's hole but as long as the cable has a pretty straight forward shot from the shifter, it should still be well within the confines of the console. I'd guess it's even part of their instruction sheet. I've heard the 700R4 swap may require some additional clearance at the rear with the floorboard. I had mine installed at Phoenix Transmissions in Weatherford, TX. and they said the same thing. They had found though that if the body mounts were in good shape and/or recently replaced, they didn't find this an issue. Biggest problems they had run into was with old, compressed mounts allowing the body to settle more on the frame thereby causing the clearance issue. I also had to have the 4-speed driveshaft shortened but Phoenix Trans took care of that as well. The only other issue I can think of is trans cooling. Either a radiator with integral cooling or an external cooler is needed. Hope some of this helps and good luck on your project! Re: [Chevelle-list] Car show judging
Frank, Their website shows the GOLD SPINNER judging criteria at http://www.chevyvettefest.net/judging.htm. There is also a statement that to be judged CORRECT, "Indicated item appears correct to the best of the Judge's knowledge and in accordance with latest data available at the time." So if there's anything that might not generally be known, I'd say be prepared to prove it's right. I don't see anything on the site about "Bow Tie Blvd" (?) If you can't find anything there, I would contact the host of the show and ask for their judging criteria. Good luck at the show! I just got the one for this time period and it is a great one as usual. It has lots of stuff about the 64-65s which is very interesting to me. I will let the list know when I see another.
