Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust.... Block ID

2010-10-26 Thread Dan Solomon
The block is a 454 used from 72-75 in the Chevelle, up to 76 in passenger cars
thru 76 and trucks until 79. Also used in the vette in 72.

The 3919840 was on the 396 from 67-69 and on the 427 from 67-70. It is a closed
chamber 106.8 cc head.

The 3873858 was used from 66-67 on the 396 and 66-68 on the 427. It is also
closed chamber but with a larger 108.9 cc chamber.

If you have a question for the list, you should start a new thread to eliminate
confusion.

Thanks, Dan

Never had a problem in over thirty years, using Loctite vs. steel and anti
seize. In my early days I spent a lot of time on rusted and rounded exhaust
bolts. I do suggest anti-seize on the studs when replacing. Hand tighten is
sufficient. Tighten on three or four even passes.

Retorqueing after thermal cycling is a good idea but not brass nuts, they are
too soft and may strip out.

The only reason a carbon gasket will fail is if air/exhaust is able to pass by
it causing  it to oxidize. I would take a real close look at your flanges. Are
they lining up properly? Is there any nicks or any other imperfections in the
mating surfaces that  may cause mis-alinement's? You would be looking for any
cuts or burrs that would damage the integrity of your sealing media.

Tighten your bolts in sequence, assuring that you have a even compression of
the gasket. Torque in increments 1/3 of the end result you wish to achieve and
then once around to check. Whenever you touch one bolt, it changes to values of
the other two.

Hope this helps.

I have been told that there are metal gaskets (poss copper?) and regular donut

once i put a new engine in my car, and then put anti-seize on the studs on
the lower exhaust manifold, and i too had the donut leaking problem, but it
was because it kept loosening up due to the anti-seize. - which in turn then
blow them out

I forgot to add, lubricate your new bolts. You can achieve a greater bolt load
with the same torque value. Do not use Loctite.

also like the pypes systems. I can not afford the stainless but the 403 system
are about $500-650.

What about noise levels? Does one make more noise than the other?

Whatever I get my plan would be more happy with the x-pipe or small crossover

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have Hooker Competition headers, Flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers, and
mandrel-bent 2.5 tailpipes on my BB.  I had my muffler shop run the pipe
between the collectors and the mufflers, just before it goes over the
axle.  The Flowmaster pre-bent pipes fit fairly well, the muffler shop was
able to use them without any modifications, although they are tight towards the
tires.  Personally I am tired of the Flowmaster muffler sound, it seems as
though every kid with a V8 runs them.  I bought mine about 8-9 years ago
before they got quite so popular.

deciding as what to use, glass packs  or Flowmasters, and what Flowmaster

Gardner Exhaust Systems is the absolute best.
There is no other company that even comes close for a concourse restoration.
They are a bit pricey but their exhausts are exactly as original and they fit
perfectly.

Cool Thanks,
I tried calling the company for a price quote Monday but only got their
answering machine. I'm anxious to try them on my GTO because it should be an
easy bolt-on job. If things go OK, I will eventually get 3" Y-pipes for the
Chevelle and install cut outs on it. Thanks for the tips! Do you have any
photos of the units or the install?

Hardest part I would think would be aligning the motor of the cutout so you
had room to install it without it hitting the floorboards or dragging the
ground. Of the two, I like the design of the DMH just for that reason, it
appears to have more adjustability in the orientation.

I used a set of the Summit pipes with the caps (#SUM-670136). Only took a
few seconds to uncap them manually. I think the electric ones would be cool
for a few reasons not really associated with performance. Performance-wise
you still have the potential for a portion the exhaust to exit the mufflers
by not making the turn at the cutout.

On the fun side, think of the smiles you'll produce in your car the next
time a rap-thumper pulls up next to you at a stoplight and rattles your
windows or ricer starts revving his coffee-canned exhaust.

Hello,
Any of you guys running one of those nifty exhaust bypasses on your cars.

I'm thinking about putting electric ones on the car but I'm a little afraid
to spend sooo much money to GET an exhaust leak (if you know what I mean).

Summit has two types for sale:
Quick Time Performance2- 2 1/2" electric units for $299.00 -shipping
tomorrow
and...

DMH Performance 2- 2 1/2" electric units (without the Y-pipe) for $320.00
-shipping some time in November (WOW)

Anyway, I was wondering a few things:
1. Are they any good (as far as quality/ leak-free)
2. Are either of these companies any good?
3. Anyone have horror stories or things to worry about?
4. Is there an alternative to these that are better?
5. I like the ability to be loud or not-as-loud. Is there any true
performance benefit?

I already have 2 1/2" exhaust on the GTO with Flowtech Warlock mufflers, so
the bypass plugs are already in place. All I would need would be the
electric solenoid units to be in the game.

The Chevelle would need 3" units and Y-pipes to be cut in just before the
Flowmaster 40's (which are already loud).

Thanks,
Steve

My 1965 Malibu SS-350 went to the muffler shop to diagnose a ticking noise in
the right muffler. When put on the rack it was obvious the ticking (while
idling in drive) can also be heard along the pipe forward of the muffler all
the way to the manifold.

I guessed, particularly since the idle is not perfect, was that I was hearing a
badly leaking exhaust valve. A compression check on the 2-4-6-8 bank shows
135, 140, 130, 140. This seems too good to have a significant valve leak.

It has a new GMPP Crate Engine with 500 miles since installation and the tick
has been there since initial startup.

Does anyone have an idea?

In the '50s, '60s and '70s glasspacks and turbos were popular.  Long

You must be referring to the new Mustang Burnout comercial...sounds
good but I wondered...is that really the sound...or is it modded. I
haven't heard one on the street sound like that.
Plenty of decent exhausts out there. 3" would be overkill but
would give you room to grow. I've always liked the flowmaster sound
but couldn't pass on the deal I got on a 3" Borla w 2.75 tailpipes.

Nothing can make it sound like that, Mustangs have their own distinctive

Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust Manifold Bolt Removal

2006-02-12 Thread Rob Shaffer
Well, I finally got the sucker off.  I tried the bolt-outs, but there was not enough clearance at the manifold to make them useful.  A 14mm socket is just a tad smaller than a 9/16" bolt, so I hammered the 14mm in place.  I heated the bolt so that it was cherry red.  I cooled it with PB Blaster.  After about 3 heating and cooling cycles, it finally came loose.
Thanks for the help.Rob S.On 2/8/06, Al Hembd <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I agree with Mike, if you have a welder this is a
great way to do it. Not only do you have a nice new bigger nut to grab, the
heat from welding helps loosen the bold.

Rob, A trick I use for tough rounded
bolts is I set a larger nut on top of the bolt and weld it to it. The
larger the better as long as you have clearance. I would use a 1/2" nut
on the 3/8" exhaust bolts. Then carefully impact it out while it is
still hot from the weld.

Chevelle related, but is chevy related nonetheless.  I'm removing
the exhaust manifolds from a 1995 Chevy 454 engine to install
headers.  The passenger side manifold bolts came out with the
help of an impact wrench.  On the driver side, I've got all but
three bolts loose.  I stopped when one of the tough bolts started
to round out.  Now I need to remove the bolt, but cannot get a
grip with a socket.  I think Craftsman makes something that will
grip even a rounded bolt head, so I'll give that a try, but thought
I'd ask whether anyone has any advice on removing these last three
bolts.  Any tips to remove the bolt that has started to
round?  How about just removing the stubborn bolts?  Should
I heat them first?  Any tips that have worked for you in the past
will be appreiated.  Thanks. Rob S.1966

Try a "Star" socket.  Get one just slightly
smaller and hammer on bolt head.  then use impact or breaker bar.  If
that doesn't work try heating them a little first and while hot apply wax to run
threads.  Hope it works for you.  John

Thanks for all the help.  I think I'll try the "socket" and if that doesn't do the trick, then use Mike's advice and weld a nut on top of the bolt.  I did have them soaking with PB Blaster before I tried to remove them.  However, based on the bolts that I did remove, it does not look like any of the penetrating oil actually migrated up the thread bolts.  I might try heating the areas with a torch.  When heating, shold the bolt be heated or the surrounding manifold area?  Thanks.

Rob,

I bought a set of those "sockets" from Sears that
are made to bite into the head as you try to loosen the bolt. It worked great.
It works better if you can use some sort of penetration oil like PB Blaster, and
let it soak for a while, or if you can heat the area first with a torch. Careful
- and good luck.

I've had good luck with the Irwin sockets that are
intended for removing nuts and blots with rounded heads. Comes in a little
carrying case that is blue and a GREAT tool to keep in your toolbox. It looks
like a socket, but the inside of it is kinda like a spiral which bites on the
head of the nut/bolt. They work great. It's kinda like an eazy-out, but for a
socket. No drilling is required, just slip it on like a socket and start
turning.

Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing the
temp and barometric pressure listed on the dyno sheet. Thanks for your post
Craig. I learn something every day on this list.

CFM and ACFM (Actual CFM) are the same. SCFM is
"Standard" CFM and assumes a specific barometric pressure, humidity, temp,
etc. It is arrived at using a math formula applied to conditions at the time
  of the test.

Since "air density" is greater in colder air, a
greater amount of oxygen will be pumped into the motor at 60 degrees than at
  90. The difference is considerable enough that the takeoff weight of aircraft
  is adjusted for temperature, etc.

Clint,

Everything you said about my engine is correct
except I did go with hydraulic roller lifters and roller rockers. My motor
man told me to set redline at 6800rpm.

I had my dyno run today, and you are right. It
did make peak power at 6000rpm.

442hp @ 6000rpm
467fp @ 4250rpm

Just a point of interest, airflow was 720.3
scfm @ 6250rpm, which is as high as they went. What does the "s" in front of
the cfm stand for?

You guys have to remember that Larry's car
  isn't running a hyd lifter,oval port big block but a solid lifter,forged
piston, four bolt main L78. Those things will easily rev to 7,000rpm and
make their peak power well over 6,000rpm. It can handle a higher flow
exhaust. I suggested 2.5" tailpipes because the exhaust velocity is
reduced enough that the extra expense and more noise of 3" tailpipes isn't
necessary on a BBC less than 427ci. The smaller tailpipes will help the
low-end torque curve a noticeable amount and reduce the

That is so true Ron! When my motor man called and
said "it's time", I drove to his shop like a madman! I walked in with a digital
camera and video camera with a big smile on my face. I haven't built an engine
since the mid 70's. Although I double-checked everything, there is always that
little doubt until that engine fires up. Although I was hoping for a bit more
power, I'm sure it will be plenty for my purpose... and I just love that
lope...

I know
that a well built header will use the exhaust from one cylinder to scavenge the
others, but I'm not sure about how the exhaust system itself can or will do
that,
I
thought that once past the collector it was only a matter of getting rid of the
exhaust.
there
was an article in a magazine about an instrument measurng exhaust backpressure
and as I remember it it was all a matter the lowest pressure
possible.

I dont
think I'd use a step down in tube size, the entire system wont flow more than
the smallest tube anyway.
Maybe
Clint tought of that because of the lower restriction restriction of the bigger
muffler.

experience based input is very important to me.

It looks like we are pretty evenly split between
2.5 and 3 inch exhaust systems. I've heard (and please correct me if I'm
wrong) that having too much pipe could be detrimental to your torque numbers,
because you need a certain amount of back pressure to scavenge (pull) the
  exhaust out...

I guess the real question then becomes does my
396 with a Performer RPM Airgap intake and L78 heads redlining at 6500 - 6800
rpm move enough air to warrant 3 inch pipes. Is there a formula out there to
figure that kind of thing out? Of course I'm willing to pay for the 3 inch
system if it sounds better and has no detrimental effect on my numbers
I found Clint's comments interesting, using 2" head pipes and
reducing down to 2.5" after the muffler...

Thanks for putting up with my persistent stream
of questions here. As I dump all available dollars into this project while

Right on Craig,
Many mags have put the bigger/better idea out there. You have to
have 4.10/4.11's big carbs and exhaust to make powerNo not for the
street/strip guys. Look at your overall package and spend from
there.

Hey Larry,
Both 2.5 and 3" will get the job done. I would look at quality,
fit, and muffler sound that you like. I ran 11's with a 2.5" exhaust
and summit cheapy turbo mufflers and ran 10's with 4" flowmaster loud
pipes! The current Borla system fits in all the factory mounting
locations and is made of SS. I picked it up off the Summit clearance
counter for under $300. I like the flowmaster sound a little better
than the borla but price, fit, and quality won out. Here are a few
pics of the system http://www.personal.kent.edu/~wbainey/BORLA.htm

2005-11-29 Thread Craig Ellis

Just my two cents but the old axiom "you drive torque
and race horsepower" is true. Unless you actually bet folding money on street
races or a drag strip regular, I'd choose the options that produce torque. I've
got a BBC 402 that's .060 over - that's only 413 CI. Not to offend anyone out
there with a BBC but that is a smallish motor and does not justify 3" exhaust or
2" headers. All that stuff seems pretty cool but even the calculations argue
against those sizes. I know that my motor will spin to 6500 but rare will be the
day that it does. I routinely shift at 5500 and once in a blue moon spool it out
to 6000. 1 and 3/4 headers and 2.5 exhaust produce the ideal torque and HP for a
.550 lift cam. Note how many 400+ CI small blocks with 1 and 5/8
headers and 2" exhaust are written up in HotRod and other mags. This subject has
been studied for years and every time the results are the same. Once in a while
one of the big motor builders will "reveal" that they put a 1000 CFM Dominator
on a SBC with an RV cam and it ran like a scalded cat. You know as well as I do
that somebody is zommin' somebody. I don't know about you, but every
engine builder I've ever known would BS their mother if it won them more
business or won races. If a motor combination sounds too good to be true...it
probably is. Stick to the calculations and run the recommendations and you won't
regret it.

Speaking from experience - the only "mistake" I made is
to put a 770 CFM Holley Street Avenger on my motor. It runs perfect
but I am sure that a 670 CFM would have been the better choice. That motor just
can not pump that much air. It's like octane - any more than is needed to
eliminate preignition is wasted - and more carb volume and exhaust volume than
needed to balance the pumping action of the motor is detrimental to performance.
I was just another one of those guys that didn't want to stand around the car
show and tell people "it's a 600 CFM Holley Wimpalator". But the fact is, the
calculator said, as I recall, my engine should have a 600 - I just couldn't buy
one.

Just my opinion.

hours going to all suggested websites, trying to learn what I can. Personal
experience based input is very important to me.

As I dump all available dollars into this project while
dodging my wife's broom, I want to keep my future regrets to a
  minimum.

  Thanks,
  Larry Shouse

It's time to buy me an exhaust system. The
system will go on a fairly healthy normally aspirated 396 running L78 heads

Those of you in the know, please help me decide whether I should go with a

Hi Larry,

On my chevelle with a SBC and headers I had the flowmaster setup, this due to a
suggestion I received on this list a while ago.
I was very happy with it but this time around I'll go with a 3"stainless setup
with
four borla mufflers due to my dream of allot of horsepower in my next engine.

I dont know about the size but I would spend the extra cash on stainless steel
right
away

A healthy L78 can flow a lot of air. My suggestions
for decent street manners would be 3" headpipes to the mufflers, then full 2.5"
tailpipes.
All mandrel bent,of course,,no compression bends.
If the car will be very low, keep that in mind when choosing
mufflers.

Definately 3". With a big block it is the way to
go. Deep throaty sound. Yes there are many suppliers out there. I do like Herbs
spin techs, but they are loud. I am running Flowmasters 3" system on my

Right now is my exhaust system dangling from the trunk bottom,

[Chevelle-list] Exhaust system help/thoughts

2005-06-09 Thread Richard M. Pruett

Has anybody heard of or used these
guys?

http://www.grabthepower.com/

There is a local muffler shop that has given me a
price of $300 for a 2 1/2" dual system on my big block V-6 pick up and I'm
wanting a little feedback from users.

http://stovebolt.com/gallery/pruett_richard_1967.htm

Also, I'm interested in comments as to where to
bring out the pipes. Turn down underneath? Straight out the back? Out the side;
behind the rear wheels or before? I'm not looking for originally here;
original single 2" pipe came out behind driver side rear wheel. What I
want to achieve is to allow this old engine to breath as best as she
can. I recently opened up the air flow on this big boy by installing an
oversized air filter and raising the breather cover 1/2"; now bringing in air
all around rather than sucking it through the 1 1/2" snorkel but keeping the
original look. That made a huge difference!!

Any and all thoughts are welcome.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust System - LS 5

2005-06-05 Thread Richard M. Pruett

Has anybody heard of or used these
guys?

http://www.grabthepower.com/

There is a local muffler shop that has given me a
price of $300 for a 2 1/2" dual system on my big block V-6 pick up and I'm
wanting a little feedback from users.

http://stovebolt.com/gallery/pruett_richard_1967.htm

Also, I'm interested in comments as to where to
bring out the pipes. Turn down underneath? Straight out the back? Out the side;
behind the rear wheels or before? I'm not looking for originally here;
original single 2" pipe came out behind driver side rear wheel. What I
want to achieve is to allow this old engine to breath as best as she

Borla is a great exhaust system. A million mile warranty exaust system.
That shows they're confidence in the product. I put a Borla system on my 95
GMC Sonoma and it was great ! It made the 6 Cylinder sound like an 8 with no
excessive noise. Its throaty, but its what we ( and others) Americans love.
The extra Ponies were helpful in blasting the 5.0's that Ford made famous.
Although it wasnt only the exhaust system, it definately didnt hurt the
performance. By the way, I do not work for Borla, only a fan.

I just installed a new exhaust system on my 69 El Camino w/350 SBC and
used 2.5" & 3" aluminized tubing with Flowmaster series 40 Delta Flows.
One word describes it: loud.
The newer Pypes stuff is pretty good.

Here's my previous post about Pypes:

I bought my 3" exhaust from pypes exhaust, and it is awesome.http://www.pypesexhaust.com/I
mocked up the kit myself, and easily could have put it on if I would havehad
a lift.  The exhaust over the rear axle was a PITA, so I brought it
tothe muffler shop, and they put it on cheap.  They said it was the
best kitthey had ever put in.  I got the X pipe with the cut outs so
that I can getthat race sound when I want (I plan on putting the electric
cutouts on thecar soon), but went with the pypes mufflers because the 502
has a big voice, and I wanted to be somewhat quiet when idling through the
neighborhood.  Itstill sounds great though, and has a very deep/mean
bass sound when idling.LaterCharleswww.65ss.com

P.S. I had nothing but great stuff from them.  When I called with
questions they took the time, and helped me, and the kit was almost perfect
fit.  One tail pipe was slightly cocked (1/2", probably wouldn't have
noticed) but the muffler shop fixed it.

Check the forums/boards at performanceyears.com for threads relating to
PYPES, and also ask about the availability of instructions, support, etc.
before making a purchase. I bought one of the early PYPES systems a
couple of years ago and it came with no instructions, just a photo that
was barely helpful. And the website kept saying that the online
instructions were "coming soon" but when I checked back last year they
still weren't up. I have the system on my car but have never been truly
happy with it; I had to do quite a lot of modifying to get it to fit and
it still hangs too low for my taste (Trans Am, which doesn't have much
ground clearance to begin with). In fact, I'm planning on working on
it today in case I hook up with the Power Tour tomorrow...

Hopefully PYPES' products and service have improved since 2003 but I'd do
some serious research before sending them any money, based on what I
went through. You can also check the threads at classicalpontiac.com
(Performance Years started out as strictly Pontiac) for some opinions.
Good luck!
