RE: frame-relay lmi question...

2000-09-22 Thread Johns, Andrew M ETC (CNE N654)

I found in my CCNA notes that the LMI-type only needs to be specified for
IOS ver 11.1 and earlier, 11.2 and up its autosensed. It says if using 11.1
or earlier, specify the type used by the switch (telco). It should not
matter at all whats on the other end, its is only concerned with the local
connection between the local router and the local telco switch. Does that
sound right?

I am on your side Cory - the L in LMI stands for LOCAL, and the LMI type has
to be the same between your router and the frame-relay switch it is
connecting to.

I found some more info about it here...

I'm reading a CIT book that is saying that not only does frame-relay
encapsulation have to be the same on both sides (central site to remote site
router) but the LMI does also... I thought the LMI type was only
significant from that router to its telco frame-relay switch.

Comments?

problem in multilink

2000-09-22 Thread Jacob Thomas

Hi!
I have been having a problem in one site where 2 async modems are connected
to a 1600 router. This site is connected to a router at the HO.When one
modems works there is no problem with the data transfer , but as soon as
the second modem dials in there are large packet drops and the speed
drops .When pinging to the Ho router large number of request timeouts are
found.
I have changed the modems and checked but there is no change. It would be
god if someone could help me out.

RE: what is unmumbered?

2000-09-22 Thread Yee, Jason

ip unumbered is an interface configuration command. If you type in ip
unnumbered ethernet 0 it means that the interface that you type in this
command has ip address that takes the value from ethernet 0

You often do this where you have a lot of async interfaces for dialing in
but you only want to worry about a single ip address for all these async
interfaces for routing purposes

RE: US DOD. How do they do it?

2000-09-22 Thread Johns, Andrew M ETC (CNE N654)

What kind of name is that anyway?
I do work for DOD and its not any real secret, our networks are
internalized. We use NIPRNET SIPRNET. Nonclassified Internet Protocol
Routed Network and Secret Internet Protocol Routed Network. (I could very
well have some of the words wrong as I don't memorize it). Our connections
are to the NOCC, Network Operations Control Center. One in UK One in the US
(there are more but for simplicity...) The NOCC controls access of NIPRNET
to the "outside". SIPRNET never goes outside. You can't get in. Course
anyone who wants in bad enough will figure it out, but I'm sure they have
the biggest and baddest firewalls around.
Interestingly, there are some efforts underway (and some commands have done
it) to go on the economy for internet service since its very slow on NIPRNET
sometimes and we are charged from our budget for the bandwidth used.
My disclaimer is that I don't know ALL the details, this is my personal
understanding of the BASIC operation. I don't know everything.
I wrote this mostly for the group. Anything beyond this no one will get
access to.
What kind of name is that anyway? I think I would be embarrassed to use
it

RE: CA in IPSec

2000-09-22 Thread Horvath, Russell

Just a quick question regarding CA's on windows2000.

I am currently looking at this for our network but in the labs. This said we
are looking at using the windows2000 one as its the cheapest.

Has anyone actually set up the CA for windows2000?
Are there any 'GOTCHAS' I need to be aware of when using with cisco IOS 12.1
and above?.
Is there a limitation with the size of network you can use it on?

RE: CCNP Todd Lammle Books???

2000-09-22 Thread Jon . E . Gudmundsson

I use following tecnique when I study for an CCNP exam:
- I try to get as much hands on experience as I can.
- I read some hands on books about the material. The CCIE books are usually
good.
- Then I read a studyguide like Todd Lammle writes. I do it to get an
overwiev of the material for the exam.
- At last (Last week or so before the exam) I start reading books like the
Exam notes from Sybex or the Exam Cram books from Coriolis. I am lazy and
dont take notes when I read so I use these books as they are designed to be
as notes. At this stage I take as many practice exams as I possibly can to
see where my knowledge lacks and hit the books again.

Yes, that is correct. IOS 11.2 and later will autosense the LMI type. It
is possible that the LMI cannot be decoded, and in that event, you may have
to manually set the type. (i.e. frame-relay lmi-type ansi )

I suppose u have to set-up through the DHCP the following settings:

-Wins Server address for your clients (You have to install one if there is
none)
-Node Type= H(Hybryd)see the MS docs

If u don't have Wins and you don't intend to install one you have to setup
the router interface to

One thing that i'm unable to do is browse our network neighborhood. I think
the router is blocking NetBIOS broadcast traffic to pass through. Is there a
command in Cisco IOS that will let NetBIOS broadcast traffic pass through
both ways(from client to LAN and LAN to clients).

Thanks.

Are there any listers with knowledge of Defense
networks out there. I am working with a defence type
organisation (western world; not saddam!) and need
info on how the US DOD use cisco in their services.

For example do they rely on cisco's implementation of
IPSEC for non classified traffic or do they just send
in the clear on a private network.
Do they utilise public networks.
Do they utilise THE public network eg VPNS to remote
sites?
Do they outsouce portions of there network for
"connectivity only" and implement their own controlled
security at higher layers?

I guess the minimum level of security for even
non-class info would be 3des and classified would be
sent on a completely seperate hardware (kgxxx)
encryption based network.

Do they utilise the catalyst range of switches and if
so how do they maintain high levels of security at
layer 2. What stops the cleaner plugging in his
lappie, dhcp'ing an address and shoot'n some nukes?

Are there any US DOD public web pages on how they use
cisco technology?

There are many examples of other types of organisation
(not in the killing industry) that also have a
requirement for TOP SECRET levels of network security.
Are there any public web sites with examples of
implementations?

Thanks!

I know MCSEs that are making much less than 45k a year, and MCSEs that are
making
MUCH more than 65k a year!!!
For them it depends on the job responsibilities, and experience...

For CCIEs, there are companies that will hire full time for well over
100k a year. But, there is much more money to be made in consulting
where I know of a person making over $150 an hour!!!
At even 30 hours a week, do the math :-)

It all depends on what you are looking for

Re: Problem in 2948g switch

2000-09-22 Thread Don Orlik

Yes, it does defeat the purpose of a Layer 3 switch. But according to the
post, the user/customer isn't using layer 3 technologies. In most cases,
customers buy Layer3 switches not understanding the capabilities of them and
want to use them as a regular switch. To do so, all the ports need to be
within the same bridge group.

Again, here is a link on how to approach configuring the 2948G-L3 switch.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/l3sw/2948g-l3/rel_12_0/7wx51
5a/config_g/intfc_cg.htm

Also notice under the section Additional Configurations on the Fast Ethernet
and Gigabit Ethernet Interfaces, that Cisco states "... can configure the
Fast Ethernet and the Gigabit Ethernet ports into a bridge group, which is
the recommended configuration, or use the ports as router interfaces."

To fix the Microsft Browsing Service problems that could be introduced
within a switched environment is a whole other topic.

Hopefully, this clears up any questions that people may have.

Don Orlik

I think I would be embarrassed to use
it

Re: CID Exam Question

2000-09-22 Thread Kevin Wigle

I don't think that it's a question of "whatever a client wants to
support"..

It's more like, this stuff is out there in legacy systems and they use Cisco
stuff so you should know it if you bump into it.

That's why there's still a lot of Token Ring in the CCIE, not many implement
it for new networks but there's still a lot of it out there.

Pradeep,
Your conduct is disgraceful, your timing appaling, your lack of sincerity
embarassing.
Rest assured that were you inclined to treat me with the same contempt and
sheer bloody-mindedness at such a traumatic period in my life I would not be
as graceful as Raymond.

There is no place for people like you, on the global internet, or otherwise.

Subject: OT: US DOD. How do they do it?

Thanks!

Problem with CiscoSecure ACS v2.3 for NT

2000-09-22 Thread Cletus . O . Ugwu

Hi guys,
Please could somebody help me out on this :
I have CiscoSecure ACS V2.3 using Windows NT 4.0 domain authentication
running on 2 NT Servers. It works okay except that it refuses the creation
of some user accounts.
For example I wanted to create an account "phtmi2" but could not until I
change it to "phtmi0". I checked that no such account exists in all the
groups. I cannot really explain it. I keep getting into the same problem now
and then.
Please who can help ? I wonder if anybody else has bumped into this
kind of queer problem.

Passed Support 2.0

2000-09-22 Thread Miller, Nathan (AZ15)

Thanks to the group for the study tips etc. I passed the Support 2.0 exam
yesterday (931). After taking some of the practice exams earlier in the
morning I thought that I had probably thrown my $100 away. Perhaps I got
lucky in the question selection but the level of detail required for this
exam was not as great as I had expected. Much of the exam is strait out of
the Cisco press books. I prepared by taking the CIT class from GN, reading
the exam cram book, and scanning the Cisco press book as a reference. In my
estimation I answered 50% of the questions from general knowledge, 30% from
portions of the Cisco press book that seemed to point to test questions, and
20% based on things that I learned in the class. Don't get me wrong, the
class was great and I learned a ton but the exam can not really simulate the
scenarios that are presented in the lab portion of the class and the test
can certainly be passed without taking the class. If I were to do this
again (and I am going to because I still need to pass foundation) I would
read the Cisco press book(s) twice or more and use other books for
clarification. Thanks again for the resource that this group/community
provides.
Regards,

Nathan Miller

Not unless you also have a DSL-to-(something else most likely Ethernet)
bridge or router. The only Cisco equipment which supports a direct DSL
interface are the dedicated DSL routers, and the new WIC-1ADSL module for
the 1700's (support for 2600's and 3600's pending)

The two Microsoft knowledge base articles that really help with the Netbios
browsing accross routed Domains issue in Windows are:

Q181501 Dial-UP Clients can not browse the network
Q150800 Domain Browsing with TCP/IP and LMHOSTS Files

Print them out, stick them in a binder, and don't ever lose it.

Problem with CiscoSecure ACS v2.3 for NT

2000-09-22 Thread Cletus . O . Ugwu

Hi guys,
Please could somebody help me out on this :
I have CiscoSecure ACS V2.3 using Windows NT 4.0 domain authentication
running on an NT Server and another server for backup. It works okay except
that it refuses the creation of some user accounts.
For example I wanted to create an account "phtmi2" but could not until I
changed it to "phtmi0". I checked that no such account exists in all the
groups. I cannot really explain it. I keep getting into the same problem now
and then.
Please who can help ? I wonder if anybody else has bumped into this
kind of queer problem. Thanks in advance.

First off, if you were truly working with a Defense Data Communications

of our Allies you would not need to ask.

Would you ever want a router interface to pick up an IP address via DHCP?
Why or why not?

A non-addressable firewall is 100% effective at blocking unauthorized
traffic, but 0% effective at allowing authorized traffic...

CR: On a real world, production network, no. However, in a lab setting,
just for the heck and convenience of it, it would be cool to have the
routers get an IP address always reserved for them from a local DHCP server.
That way, when you erase and rebuild, that is one less thing to do. That is
about the only time I would actually use DHCP with a router.

What error did you get when you tried to create the user? If I am not
mistaken, there is only and add/edit button for user manipulation. If the
user does not exist it is created and if it does the user configuration
window is opened.

Please post the error you are receiving.

http://www.cisco.com/partner/visio/ if you have a Partner-grade CCO login.
Also, if you're a partner, check out http://www.cisco.com/partner/cnd/ for
the Cisco Network Designer tool which does Visio-style diagrams plus can
generate complete bills of materials, pricing, and more; trick is you have
to attend a class to get the software, then pay for maintenance if you want

If you're not a partner and if the latest Visio Technical doesn't have newer

Re: native vlan

2000-09-22 Thread Gabriel

Also, and importantly: While ISL tags *all* frames with VLAN info, 802.1Q
does *not*: Traffic on the "native" VLAN is forwarded unaltered. So, an
802.1Q trunk will not work at all if the native VLANs are not identical,
whereas an ISL trunk can if nothing goes wrong.

Re: 2611 or 2511 for the lab

2000-09-22 Thread Gabriel

2500s: fixed ports, slower, cheaper
2600s: modular ports, faster, more expensive

If you're only going to use the router in one role and you don't need the
performance, get a 2500. If you want to be able to use the router with
multiple interface types in multiple scenarios, get a newer more modular
router.

A 1700 with 2 dual-serial WICs should make a fine frame switch if you don't
need more than 4 serial ports.

Ah, 100VG the Betamax of the networking industry. FYI, 100VG was
actually an official standard and was supported (albeit only nominally) by
some vendors other than HP. Good stuff, though... more like 100Mbps token

Not compatible. You can use an NM-4A/S if you don't need faster than 128K;
otherwise, use two WIC-2T's.

(If you're already using your WIC slots, you can get an NM-2W which will
give you 2 more WIC slots.)

Re: ccie r/s practice tests>?

2000-09-22 Thread Lauren Child

The tests on certificationzone I found concentrated more on the groovy
fashionable stuff like voice etc. and not on the downright obscure and
awkward stuff that the written exam actually had. It might have just
been the exams I took, but I found it concentrated on very different
areas.

I cant tell you what sort of areas were on the exam, as the NDA is quite
binding, but I found the token ring white paper on ccprep very good, the
CCIE section of the ccieprep.com book was good, and very similar in
terms of complexity/awkwardness, and the papers on certificationzone
were good. If you can get through the CCIE bit of the ccieprep.com book
(the rossi brothers one), then you should be fine.

Re: DSL with 5 Cisco routers

2000-09-22 Thread Frank Wells

Connect your DSL modem to an ethernet port on one of your 25XX routers (2514
preferably for ease) and you can work on some NAT, VPN and IPSec labs. You
could also play around with some various DMZ security issues.

You will need to run an IOS with the firewall feature set to really get some
cool stuff going though. Get more than one public IP from your ISP too.

re: CiscoPro 2501

2000-09-22 Thread Daniel Cotts

The CiscoPro boxes were sold through distribution. They had specific IOS
versions. You cannot just load a new IOS on the box. There is a utility
program on CCO that converts a CiscoPro into thinking that it is a Cisco.
 http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/rsl
Most had 4 MB of Flash. Best to upgrade to 8.

art of subnetting

2000-09-22 Thread John Deatherage

Here is my dilemna: I could probably answer most questions on CCNP, CCIE
written, etc. exams on subnetting, but the most important thing seems to be
real-world experience. I'm mainly looking for more info on the following
topics:

- /30 for wan links, when/where to use
- if you have a /20 (example), where to put your blocks (of course,
summarization is a must), and where it's generally better to put /30s
according to what two subnets they are connecting

All I can really do is look over case studies and real-world examples that
people show me, and learn from my mistakes. I just want to be able to
design IP networks and be able to show the results to someone and not leave
any room for improvement ;)

Re: Catalyst 4000 series

2000-09-22 Thread Michael Fountain

Go to Cisco's main page.
Under Products & Technology go to switches
Under 4000 switches click on product literature
On this page click on product literature also (silly, I know)
Under data sheets click on 'Catalyst 4000 family'

I could give you the direct link, but if you're going to be working with
Cisco much, it is better to get a feel for how their web pages are layed out
so you can find stuff faster.

ISDN BRI Dialer Problem

2000-09-22 Thread Kari Nurdin

Hi All, I need help,

I have a central site and a remote site in a ISDN BRI bridged environment.
I have over and over verified the configuration and it all looks fine. I
have a number of installs that are similar configurations and they all
function(I have compared the configs).

I am not able to connect, the following message echos:
"02:37:133143986176: %ISDN-4-INVALID_CALLEDNUMBER: Interface BR0, Ignoring
call, LDN and Called Party Number mismatch

call, LDN and Called Party Number mismatch
02:37:158913789952: %ISDN-4-INVALID_CALLEDNUMBER: Interface BR0, Ignoring
call, LDN and Called Party Number mismatch
"

When running the debug dialer command the following message echos:
"02:35:28: BRI0 DDR: Dialing cause bridge (0xE0E0)
02:35:28: BRI0 DDR: Attempting to dial 9965

02:35:33: BRI0 DDR: Dialing cause bridge (0xE0E0)"

I am researching this problem(looking over all my books), I have spoke to
the telco and they say all is good, show isdn status shows:

I don't want to make this post to long, however, if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Why 8 wires in RJ-45?

2000-09-22 Thread Guyler, Rik [EESUS]
Title: RE: Why 8 wires in RJ-45?

This is not quite true.  You need to stipulate the caveat that 10BaseT and 100BaseT Ethernet in *half-duplex* do not use all 4 pair.  Full-duplex communication *does* require the additional pairs.

Future Needs.  You are right that 10BaseT and 100BaseT do not use more than
4 wires, but 100VGLAN and 100Base4 do.  Those specifications used the extra
wires to transmit data at a slower speed.  When you add up the additional
data lines multiple, 4, by the slower speed, 25Mb,  you get 100Mb
transmission rate.

FYI:  100Base4 was designed to run 100Mb over Cat 3 wiring.

I hadn't thought of that. Great call!
Besides, the original question was how we use Cisco- the same way everyone
else does! Its certainly not "government Cisco equipment" Its all off the
shelf, router route, switches switch. Whats the real question?

First off, if you were truly working with a Defense Data Communications
Group that needed information on US datacomm prots etc, and they were part
of our Allies you would not need to ask.

FW: Unspecified Card

2000-09-22 Thread David Toalson

On the 2610 at least you want to put your card in the first slot - W0.
Have you tried moving the card to slot W0 or is there another card in
it? The first time I installed a 2610 I had the same type of error -
moved the WIC to slot W0 and the error went away.

Re: ISDN BRI Dialer Problem

2000-09-22 Thread Rodgers Moore

A few things came to mind.

First, my telco (Bell South) has been notorious for years about not telling
customers about trailing zeros on spids. (Just something to check.)

Second, are you sure your LDN, dialed number and phone number match etc.??

Third, starting this month there are new phases of 10 digit dialing within
the same area code being required in service area's nationwide. Cincinnatti
and Lexington near me will be adding a new area code and 10 digit dialing in
a few weeks. It won't be long till we all have to dial 10 digits to call
next door. Anyway, your LDN may need the area code or you may need to add
the area code to the dial string.

If I can help you, fine, e-mail me your design and I'll have a look at it on
a technical level. But I can not divulge any info about our current nets or

2000-09-22 Thread Scott Nelson

I need to know more info to help you out.

What model are the MAC that are having a problem?
What version of MRJ are they running?
What version of MAC OS are they running?

Since this is a Cisco forum, please contact me directly and I'll help you as
far as I can. It would help if I had some idea what your network looked like
also. ( **Without** the real IP address please ).

I am looking at buying a Catalyst 4006, but my local Best Buy does not have
one on the floor (yes, that is a joke), so I can gander at it. Does anyone
know where I can get more specs on this? What I am looking for is
dimmensions, weight, BTU's, etc. What about mounting that bad boy? Any info
is greatly appreciated. By the way I do NOT have CCO login. Thanks for the
help.

Re: output queue drops

2000-09-22 Thread Charles Ryan

Shawn,

Looks like you need more bandwidthtake a look at the load on the
interface (224/255). This circuit is pretty much maxed out. I see your BW is
set for 768kbmight look into going all the way with a full T1. Also, you
can try changing your queueing from FIFO to WFQ (weighted-fair queueing),
however, it may not do you much good right now since your pipe is saturated.

HTH,

Chuck

Re: BGP Dampening!

2000-09-22 Thread Kent

Rodgers,

Yes, that was one of my thoughts.

I just felt that maybe the dampeing can help me in
this case without static route, looks like no, so the
dampeing is only for the flap routes, and I do not see
any definition on how long a route can go down and
come back to be consider flapping instead of dying.
Say the route goes away for one day, and comes back,
is this a flap?

Thanks

Kent
