IP routing is enabled by default on Cisco 2600's [7:1821]
Hi I have read in numerous places that IP routing is enabled by default on Cisco routers. Is this is true? The reason I ask is because the last 3 Cisco 2600's I've received (new routers straight from a VAR) have had IP routing disabled? Re: Failed CCDA [7:1698]
Study up and I'm sure you'll have it the next time. Regarding the age thing, experience (not just knowledge) is often a factor. Plus, what says you're not going to leave them as soon as you're able to work full time? More than likely this other employee isn't going to leave as fast. Don't worry, in a short while you'll have some years of "experience" under your belt as well (often "experience" isn't seen just as knowledge or hands on experience, but as years in the trenches). Just keep at it, set your goals and stick to them. I'd also talk with your manager and see if they see value to certs, and if so if you can work it into a way to get raises. But when you think about it, most likely the CCDA doesn't hold that much value at your current position, whereas a CCNA and CCNP would be seen as an asset at an ISP (unless you're out selling design solutions to customers like Howard, where it'd make more sense). -- Jason Roysdon, CCNP+Security/CCDP, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ ""Russ Kreigh"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > I too am only 17 years old and like Priscilla I think this is a > controversial topic. To me it looks >like it should be 15. > >Thanks, >Steve There's a widespread and unfortunate belief that "summarization" is OK if it includes a list of addresses, even if it picks up addresses not included in the list. True, you can probably get away with that in many enterprise situations, but it can be catastrophic in the Internet. As I interpret the problem, the minimum number of addresses that can be created from your example are: 10.2.1.0/24 10.2.2.0/23 You can't do the /22, because it would pick up 10.2.0.0/24, which isn't part of the list. /15 or /16 make no sense. Converting the third octet to binary: 10.2.0.0/2400 00 10.2.1.0/2400 01 10.2.2.0/2400 10 10.2.3.0/2400 11 ^^ ^^ 111222 22 789012 34 Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=1814&t=1794 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I had begun to think that I was dropped from the Cisco ``News for Consultants'' newsletter, as the last ML message I got from them is from February. So as I wrote to them a few days ago, and haven't received a response I went to their site and poked around and found the last issue of the list archived there dates from February. ? I had thought that I was dropped unintentionally from the program, but now it appears that something's amiss Cisco side. Hmmm. mentor tech and global knowledge [7:1811]
3rd day into my CID course with Mentor Tech. The instructor Bill McInerney, a CCIE, seem to be a well-rounded knowledgable guy. Good teaching skills too. Took a Nortel VPN class with global knowledge a few weeks back, the instructor was not very knowledgable, even in the security aspect (misinterpret/can't answer a few questions). Not well-prepared for the class (can't find an important command because of an OS version upgrade). I'm planning on taking a CCIE lab course soon. I know the above may not be a good comparion. Has anyone taken Global Knowledge's CCIE lab course? How good is their instructing quality? I'm leaning toward Mentor Tech. Bruce Caslow is teaching the ECP1 now, and I heard other known CCIE book writers are also teaching there. Can anyone shed some lights on the comparison of both CCIE lab courses? It's not going to work with port redirection doesn't work with anything other than tcp and udp. You need rdp (protocol 27, not a port, but the protocol), as well as tcp 3389 and tcp 1503. Try it with this instead and you'll see that it should work (provided no ACLs or firewall is blocking it): ip nat inside source static 192.168.1.25 200.200.200.1 -- Jason Roysdon, CCNP+Security/CCDP, MCSE, CNA, Network+, A+ List email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage: http://jason.artoo.net/ ""Kim Seng"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > I have a MS Terminal server (Port 3389) inside a > private subnet. When I was 17 years old (1987), I washed chili pots @ the local greasy spoon for $3 an hour... wondering how I was going to pay for college. My senior worked 9 to 4 (I worked 4 to 11, sometimes 12AM), made $5 an hour, only had the cushy lunch crowd to contend with, & left the tough pots for me. I feel your pain. Re: Route Summarization [7:1794]
Thanks Chuck, I think the number of bits in the mask equals the number of highest order bits the addresses have in common. By "highest order" bit, does that mean a bit set to 1? As for the mask being 16, that's what the approved solution for a virtual lab says. It is possible the solution is wrong. At any rate, it has me confused. Route Summarization [7:1794]
I want to summarize three addresses within an OSPF area: 10.2.1.0/24 10.2.2.0/24 10.2.3.0/24 Converting to binary, I see the 15th bit is the highest order bit the three addresses have in common. RE: Serial Link is flapping [7:1793]
Tariq, you don't get away so easily :-> When you say "flapping" what is the specific symptom? Sh ip int brie shows up down? Down down? Is it that you are losing routes? Debug fram pack for frame relay links, debug ppp for ppp links, debug hdlc I think? Don't have a router handy. ) shows what? You are sitting there minding your own business and the link goes down, then comes back up? Or are you doing something, like reloading the router, and the link appears up for a moment, then goes down? In a situation where you are connecting routers back to back, in general I have found that if a serial link is not operating properly, it is a config problem. Knock on wood. Rico, I need to know how familiar you are with Unix platform. I run my tacacs server on a linux platform. The setup and configuration is quite simple. Before I go on, I need to know the following the information: 1) How familiar are you with Unix? by that, I mean you don't have to be familiar with Unix, just enough to compile the source code, 2) are you familiar with either vi editor or emacs? 3) are you familiar with compiling the source code? You can find the TACACS+ source code at: http://www.gazi.edu.tr/tacacs/ If you say "YES" to the above questions, then I will be glad to help you. RE: TTL [7:1700]
I'm not sure I understand the question, or the need. The TTL field is 8 bits, which gives a max value of 255. At this point, I believe that one's only options for manipulating TTL would be in terms of changing default hop count maximum for IGRP and EIGRP routing protocols. I.e. the default distance for an (E)IGRP network is 100 ( 100 hops ) and this can be changed to a max of 255 RFC 1812 specifies that all packets be dropped after the TTL is expired. This is to keep packets from floating around forever. The process is specifically described in terms of router behaviour. I suppose that various applications may manipulate the TTL value in various ways, but the fact is that the max value is still 255, and router stacks are generally not configurable in the way you suggest. Am I understanding your question correctly? Certification Plaque [7:1786]
Dear Group, Got a present delivered by FedEx today. I can remember a thread a long while back about not getting a decent plaque when you certified to CCDP or CCNP. Well, Cisco Canada has started a program that does send out a neat plaque. It reminds me of the laser cut wooden plaque I got when I certified for CBE (Certified Banyan Engineer). The plaque is 9" by 11", wooden and has a metal Cisco Bridge on it with "Cisco Systems" embossed. Your name is cut into the wood as well as the sentence: "Recognized as Cisco Certified" Then in a little bag are brass plates with all the certs you have earned. CCNA, CCDA, CCNP and CCDP (in my case). You peel off the sticky tape and place them on the plaque. A letter suggests you may want to place them in consideration of earning more certs! I know the idea is the knowledge (or the journey) and not the certs (or the trinkets/certificates) but I have to admit that this looks cool and somehow suggests a more substantial achievement than a piece of paper might indicate. (in the industry cert arena anyways) However, I guess you get the plaque even if you've just passed CCNA. so I don't know. Perhaps they should restrict it for the NP/DP. I'm not sure I would agree that any one exam cert deserves this kind of recognition... (easy to say since I've got more I guess) Don't know if Cisco (US) will start this but I think that it would be welcomed if they did. Exam Cram [7:1785]
I want to say a word in favor of exam cram books, I have all the series for CCNP and also the one for CCIE. As you can notice, english is not my mother's language, but for a long time, everything I study comes in english, twice the effort needed to understand the subjects. Exam Cram Books are simple, and I read them twice to prepare an exam, the first time to know some detail of what am I suppose to know, then I use Need to know more section on the books to have extra information, I participate reading all groupstudy notes, including Natashas, which I considere essential study material, also read Cisco Press Books, which are hard to follow, but knowing already a little makes it easy, and finally when I think I am prepared for the exam, I read exam cram again and do the sample test. For sure I will not do an exam by only reading exam cram!. Ruben _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: 2503 - Finding Serial Number [7:1777]
I don't have anything on the outside of my 2511 either, unlike the easy to find & read labels on my 4500's. I'd say to pop the case & see if their are stickers on the motherboard. I believe they're usually orange-ish/ yellow, much like on the CAM's, PAM's, & Catalyst cards. All, Just wanted to say a quick THANK YOU for all the help this list has been over the past 12 months. I passed the CIT on mmonday and now am a CCNP. I actually put this list on the test survey as a "other" study method. My next bit of help is in what specialization gives me the best career opportunity??. I am going to get the DP over the summer because I think it is good to have, but what after that? Again thanks to everyone on the list. Sorry Paul- not a lot of compassion from this camp. Your employer's dolling out a nice sum of $$$ for your career. I now replace the switch with a router, the connection from the radio into the router was made using a cross connect rj45 cable. After all configuration, show ip route duplicates all the routes from the first router into the second router. Everything seem okay. But outside the route I cannot browse the internet. Both routers were connected together via the radios through their ethernet interfaces. The questions now is, 1. Can't I connect two routers via a radio through their ethernet interfaces? 2. If the answer is NO, why then was 'show cdp neighbor' showed me the second router, why was the line protocol up, why was the routing table forwarded to my second router? 3. Is there anything I am missingup? Thanks Oletu H. G. Re: Test is in 2 hours and I'm having difficulties with RIF [7:1760]
I believe that the 8 bytes is wrong. An RD is 12 bits for the ring, and 4 bits for the bridge number. This is 16 bits which is 2 bytes. 2 bytes for each ring, bridge combination or RD. It has to be 6. No wonder why the CCIE exam is such a pain in the butt. The documentation and learning material stinks. Re: what does " no logging console" mean? [7:1708]
Good point. A lot of the really fun debugs would be disastrous on a production router. Unfortunately, they have the best chance of generating cool stuff in the first place. Home labs just aren't nearly as much fun! Besides, that tension from not knowing exactly what's going to happen and that your network could die at any second just makes debugging production routers that much more interesting. >>> "Donald B Johnson jr" 4/24/01 12:15:29 PM >>> Actually i do both, one to watch things happen in real time when you change configs (invaluable for "ccie labbing it") and when a session is over i print the full debug to read before i go to sleep hoping i wake up a ccie. ANSWER: OSPF overrides 'no ip classless' [7:1758]
I have received results from a TAC case about this familiar issue. For those coming late to the picnic, the issue was that the presence of OSPF or IS-IS overrides 'no ip classless' in the router configuration and would force the router to behave classlessly. The TAC engineer consulted with some Development Engineers and here is what they said: Yes, we do this if the default (or the supernet) route is supplied by OSPF or ISIS (I guess EIGRP should be there, but it is not) and the part of the code that requested the RT lookup didn't not specify to ignore the default route if there's no specific subnet (which is the case for the locally originated and transit packets). The assumption is that it is safe to use a default/supernet route installed by a classless protocol. So what ever you and me have seen in our testing is correct behaviour. So, our original guesses were correct. The router assumes that if we're running OSPF or IS-IS then we want classless routing even if we didn't specify 'ip classless' in the config. However, an important point is that this applies only if the supernet was installed by the classless protocol. If OSPF or IS-IS is running on a router but the supernet was installed by another process, then classful routing would still apply without the addition of 'ip classless' to the config. I've also discovered that if you add 'ip clueless' to the config, the following occurs: First, ip classless is overridden but only in cases where no ip classless was manually configured previously and was not the default setting, unless the router has not had any previous configuration and is running at least 12.1(5F)T12. This does not apply for any 12.0 images except 12.0(6)S but does apply to any 11.2 image after 11.2(26c)P; Second, the gateway of last resort might be chosen by the RT lookup process if the GOLR was set by a classless routing protocol with an administrative distance lower than that of any other classless or classful routing protocol on the router, except in the case of BGP or EGP in which case the administrative distance must be at least equal to that of the routing protocol which previously installed the GOLR, if already present; Thirdly, if the lowest-weighted routing protocol is OSPF and the GOLR is advertised to neighbor as an E2 route, then the neighbor router may choose to use that route unless another neighbor has advertised the same supernet route as an E1 route. In which case--but especially when utilizing IP over Avian Carriers (with QoS)--the RT lookup will choose the Type 1 External route unless EIGRP is running on this router as well. In that case, the GOLR will be set via EIGRP because Cisco prefers EIGRP to OSPF and we should all use that anyway because, don't ya know, OSPF is harder to configure and requires way too much thought to begin with. IS-IS is just out of the question. However, if a router learns a supernet route via OSPF and IS-IS *and* EIGRP then you will be severely punished. Flogging is generally suggested. As an alternative, only run EIGRP and leave "ip clueless" configured. Any other configuration will provide ambiguous results. Pathetic Prometric [7:1746]
I need to vent. I studied and passed(did quite well) the BCRAN test 4/9. I noticed today that my records on the Cisco tracking site did not reflect my passing of the test or failing. I called Prometric today and they said that I was listed as a "no show" for the test. I asked to speak to a manager that could fix this problem and was put on perpetual hold. I'm at work so I can't wait on line forever. I got so fed up after waiting so long, I hung up. This company always seemed third rate to me. I plan on using VUE for testing in the future. OK I'm done. RE: ECP1 or ACCP1,2,3 [7:1710]
Laurel, You are confusing the ECP1 class from Mentor Technologies with the ANEW classes from Global Knowledge. The ANEW classes are being retired and students that signed up for the ANEW classes are being switched over to the new ACPC classes. If you compare the ANEW class outlines with the ACPC 1, 2 and 3 outlines you'll see that there is a major difference in the course content which I'm sure the students being switched will appreciate and isn't leaving them high and dry. The ANEW classes use to also be part of the ACP program. The replacements classes are the ACPC 1, 2 and 3. Global Knowledge is offering an ACP program which consists of the ACPC 1, 2 and 3 plus a mock CCIE lab and mentoring. Actually i do both, one to watch things happen in real time when you change configs (invaluable for "ccie labbing it") and when a session is over i print the full debug to read before i go to sleep hoping i wake up a ccie. I aint talking about production. Thank You, Don Johnson Engineering Adelphia Communications Corp. Re: Failed CCDA [7:1698]
I'm going to say something Very controversial here, which is that I think it's a good sign that a 17-year old had a hard time with the CCDA test. It validates the test a bit. Design requires experience. Can someone who has just learned to drive, design a car? Can someone who has just started learning networking, design a network? Remember that I teach (part-time) at the high school level and I love the energy, quick thinking, and creativity of that age group. I strongly believe that the inventions that they will develop will be even more amazing than the ones our generation came up with. So I do not make this comment out of prejudice. Aaron, it sounds like you know which areas you need to study a bit more in order to pass the test, so I'm sure you'll do well next time. Good luck! Re: Just Pass CIT and become CCNP certified, but .. [7:1677]
It takes analytical skills to categorize and outline topics. It also requires an ability to think in a non-linear, hierarchical fashion. (I've seen really bad outlines from author wannabes where every topic was at the same level.) Cisco appears to have a person who lacks these skills categorizing topics for some of the tests, especially CCNA and Support. My other theory is that they have a computer doing it. (Or maybe monkeys! ;-) Just be glad you passed. Congratulations! The key for those of you still trying to pass and learn about the tests: Do not use the test outlines. Use the course outline for the instructor-led training. Re: Status is up and Line Protocol is down. [7:1508]
"Line protocol is down" could have more to do with your IP schemes. change or reenter ip addressing, verify same subnet. go to global conf. and type IP routing. This may not be your fault so much as it is the routers code. Also, down the interface, bring it back up and wait for 120 seconds. Do a sh ip int brief to verify connectivity. Michael L. Even when debugging from the console, I prefer to turn off console logging and log the debug output to memory. RE: how to implement access-list in the way [7:1730]
It would seem that you want to apply the access-list to the interface that connects to the Internet. I assume that is the Serial interface. You want to block ICMP echoes incoming. (Someone pinging you.) You want to allow ICMP echo replies incoming. (Replies from others to pings sent by you.) Your example allows telnet from the Firewall to the router. However it does not block telnet from the Internet to any other box other than the router. Hopefully the Firewall provides that protection. Alternately, you could just block all telnet at the serial interface. > -Original Message- > From: David Gollop [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2001 11:09 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: how to implement access-list in the way [7:1730] > > > Hi.. RE: ECP1 or ACCP1,2,3 [7:1710]
I am looking at signing up for the APPC program which includes ACCP1, 2 3, a mock lab, mentoring, and remote lab access. However, I've been talking over the last week or so with the rep at Global Knowledge and I'm becoming a little leery of the program. He says they are discontinuing the ECP labs and replacing with the ACCP, but they are still in the midst of making changes and that he couldn't quote a firm price yet or even tell me exactly what would be included in the program. He said they are meeting on Wednesday of this week to go over the changes in the program and that he will get back to me after that. I've also heard some reports that Global has recently cancelled a lot of scheduled classes including the ECP labs because not enough students were signing up. I can understand their need to do this to stay profitable, but evidently it is leaving some students who have purchased the courses as a package deal like the APPC program kind of "high and dry." -Original Message- From: roger mcneace [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2001 7:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: ECP1 or ACCP1,2,3 [7:1710] Has anyone attended the ECP1 or ACCP1,2,3 CCIE lab prep courses? Re: DDR into a PRI [7:1701]
Yes; you have to use MICAs. The MICAs (modems) are the only thing that will be able to interpret the modulated then digitized signal coming from the remote locations. The remote modems create an analog signal which only another modem of same protocol could read (V.whatever). The Remote analog signal gets digitized at the nearest CO, using PCM. The Pulse Code Modulated verision of the analog signal is sent all the way thru the PRI and your central site router redirects it "ISDN INCOMING-VOICE MODEM" to the MICA modems. The MICA "modems" look at the PCM data and interpret it as though it had arived as a analog signal. Question to ALL: ## Does any body know if the MICAs actually convert the PCM data back into analog. Then read the V.whatever. or Does the MICA do both at the same time. The first approach would be cheaper from a circuitry stand point; but it seems kinda crazy to convert the digital signal into an analag signal for approx 1 cm. ### DaveC Robert Fowler wrote: > > Ok here is my question, Say you setup DDR with analog lines back to a > central location with PRI, would you need to have the MICA modems or is > there a command that will let the PRI interface card use the lines from the > t1-PRI? RE: Enterprise Plus IOS Image for 12.09/x [7:1685]
Have you ever had an IOS problem that you have to call into TAC while using this compressed software? If so, did they balk at the use of the compressed version? I would be worried that I may not get proper support if I am not using the IOS software as it comes from CCO. RE: Extended access list question [7:1718]
Since the access-list is worked from top down, wouldn't the top line allow all IP traffic. I don't think that IP packets are ever going to see the lower lines in your config. Also, don't forget the implicit deny at the end, you are setting up to drop all traffic not on the 192.168.0.X network. Re: Extended access list question [7:1718]
You should open standard port 53 for DNS traffic, not port greater than 1023.
