SWITCHING: Which Cisco Press book? [7:8815]

2001-06-16 Thread Jianliang Li

Which Cisco Press book is better for CCNP switching
exam?

CCNP Switching Exam Certification Guide
http://www.bookpool.com/.x/q36sqo7hd0/sm/158727

Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks
http://www.ciscopress.com/book.cfm?book=116

Background:
1. I want to buy just one of the two books.
2. From CCDA study experience: I liked the exam guide
much more than the DCN book.
3. I have built Cisco 6509 switches.

Which book should I buy?

Thank you!

Lab Exam fee is to be Hiked [7:8814]

2001-06-16 Thread sumit

Following is the excerpts from CCIE site:

After a rigorous evaluation of our current cost structure, we find it
necessary to increase our CCIE Lab exam fee to reflect our current cost of
doing business. The present $1,000 US lab fee has been in effect since the
CCIE organization was first launched in 1993. Effective on April 1, 2001, we
will begin charging customers $1,250 US per lab attempt, (plus any
applicable local taxes).

Free stuff for 640-506 [7:8817]

2001-06-16 Thread Daniel Fey

I am taking the 640-506 exam on Monday which is my last
one for CCNP 2.0 so I guess it is time to look for a job.
I think everyone should know about www.thetestpage.net
which has 100 free practice questions for this exam. And
most of you might know about www.Priscilla.com . She also
has 100 free questions in the form of flash cards.
But I just finished a free test with 146 questions from Cisco.
I logged on expecting 17 QAs as I got on 640-505, but I
was surprised. A lot of the questions were difficult and confusing.
Others were true and false and simple. But I was able to learn
all of my weak points. I have enough time to go through the books
once more before the exam.
I also highly recommend www.boson.com . They are not free, but
they are cheaper than taking an exam twice. I never have taken a
Cisco exam without their help. And I have never failed a Cisco exam.
I really have to pass on Monday. I am looking for a job either as
a technical trainer or in networking. Not much experience, but I
have passed 23 certification exams since my old company was
sold the second time. I am in job retraining. I was told by an employ-
ment manager that they don't like to hire people my age so it has
been difficult to get experience.
I almost forgot the free test at www.examcram.com .It has a
couple of bugs as do all of their exams.
Bye, Daniel

Confused about Cisco Agreement [7:8819]

2001-06-16 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

Has anyone really taken time to read and thoroughly understand the Cisco
examination agreement page?

The item 6 in that agreement reads(ie page 2 of your score sheet) Not to
sell, license, distribute, give away, or obtain from any OTHER source OTHER
THAN CISCO the exam materials, questions or answers

Is Cisco trying to say that obtaining exam materials from Sybex, boson,

materials to friends who need them for their exams or borrowing others is
illegal? If that is not what they meant, I think it is good they re-amend
that item 6.

Am confused, can someone explain better to me. Are mind by this enslaved to

Re: Confused about Cisco Agreement [7:8819]

2001-06-16 Thread Bradley J. Wilson

Let me repeat the wording, with the emphasis elsewhere: ...or obtain from
any other source other than Cisco *THE* exam materials, questions or
answers.

In other words, if someone goes and takes the Lab, and brings along a James
Bond-like photocopier in their wristwatch, makes a copy of *THE* materials
that they're given, then leaves and gives or sells them to you, then you're
in violation of Item 6 - you've obtained *THE* materials from someone other
than Cisco.

However, if someone goes and takes the Lab, then afterwards writes a study
guide but makes up their *own* questions (which you then use to study from),
then you're not in violation of Item 6. You've obtained materials, but not
*THE* materials from someone other than Cisco.

Of course, my writing this is reminding me of that scene from Animal House:
Relax, I'm pre-Law. I thought you were pre-Med. What's the
difference?

Which then reminds me of a scene from Young Doctors in Love, but I
digress.

Don't worry about Item 6 - it's necessary from Cisco's point of view, and
you're not in violation of it. :-)

The exam materials, questions or answers is the key phrase. The companies
you discuss do not sell the actual exam but practice questions.

In other words, if you purchased a copy of the actual CCNA test on the black
market, that would be grounds for removal of your certification, i.e. you
cheated.

:-) VMS 4, mostly.

This was 1980 or so. Yes, there were computers then.

My office and library tend to be a mess. But it's often hard to
explain to an administrator or organizer that wants to help me that
old journals and manuals can have very real value. The seminal paper
in structured programming, Dijkstra's Go To Considered Harmful,
dates to 1968.

I still use medical journals over 10 years old. My pharmacology
textbooks often suggest consulting an earlier edition for details on
drugs rarely used now. Admittedly, I cherish a 1934 book called
Modern Office and General Practice, simply to remind me how far we
have progressed. Essentially, EVERYTHING in it is wrong.

A few of my computer science materials are simply there for
historical value, like the FORTRAN manual for the IBM 709. This
wasn't called FORTRAN I because it was too early to consider there
ever might be a FORTRAN II.

I certainly saved my own publications, even if they go back to the mid-70s.

Okay. Some of you have asked for the web resources i used:

This one gives an overview of the Stratacom network architecture (flat,
structured and tiered networks) and switches (IPX, IGX and BPX):
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/wanbu/bpx8600/8_2_0/82over/s
ysmch01.htm
This one describes the Stratacom's network management tools
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/wanbu/bpx8600/8_2_0/82over/s
ysmch04.htm
I think that these ressources are sufficient. There are part of a huge
manual. Picking up some other chapters of this manual might be a good idea.

For SNA, i didn't need any ressource... I'm lucky. I have been working
several years as an IBM S/370 and S/390 Systems Engineer and Systems
Administrator... Therefore i've generated several NCP's and maintained VTAM
ressources...

RE: wake on lan [7:8792]

Actually, the default on ip directed-broadcast is subject to IOS release.

Since IOS 12.0, no ip directed-broadcast is the default and will therefore
not show up in the configuration.

The no ip directed-broadcast command is for IP, as you can tell. If you
don't see that command in the running config, then ip directed broadcasts
are presumably being forwarded. A directed broadcast is one that comes from
a device on one segment and is destined to all devices on another network,
for example 10.0.0.1 sending a frame to 172.16.255.255.

But it sounds like ip directed broadcasts won't do you any good because
Wake on LAN isn't an IP packet.

To make the router forward a broadcast that has no network layer you would
have to turn on bridging.

I have been receiving a report of a worm being sent to people as a reply

worm and may be spreading to others (this person has been removed from the
list).

Here is a link for more information:

The worm operates by responding to unopened e-mails with an attachment
saying Take a look to the attachment.

Please realize, the worm is not being passed through the GroupStudy server,
but instead sent directly from sender to recipient as if it was an off list
reply. In fact, GroupStudy does not allow attachments so any worm will be
automatically removed.

If someone sends you a worm as a reply to an e-mail sent on the list, please
send me the e-mail address of the person for removal. They may rejoin once
the worm has been cleared from their system. It would also be nice to tell
the person about the worm so they can correct the problem.

Please understand, this worm is not being passed via the GroupStudy servers
so there is not a whole lot I can do from this end. Just be careful when
opening attachments to replies from the list.

RE: Cisco IOS Firewall vc Cisco PIX Firewall [7:8200]

2001-06-16 Thread Hundley, Kent

Your statement is incorrect.

Context Based Access Control (CBAC) has been around since 11.2 on certain
Cisco router platforms and does indeed keep state on connections through the
router, much like the PIX. i.e. CBAC keeps track of src/dst IP addresses,
src/dst port numbers and TCP sequence numbers, it also understands many
multi-channel apps like FTP, CUSeeMe, VDOlive, etc and will dynamically open
ports as needed for these apps.

To the OP question:

The main differentiating factors between the PIX and a Cisco with CBAC(i.e.
FFS) are:

1) PIX is pre-hardened, no unecessary services. A router must be properly
configured to remove all unecessary functions, but then you still cannot
selectively remove things from the code itself, just change commands so
there is always a chance that some service may still be active on the
router. Not so on the PIX. In simple configurations, the PIX is much
easier to get working than a similarly configured router, less room for
error, easier to manage, etc.

2) PIX code is optimized for NAT/filtering services, theoretically the PIX
should be faster than similar router hardware. The high-end PIXes are
definitely faster than high-end CBAC routers. Mileage may vary on the lower
end PIXes (i.e 506, 515) depending on the router its compared to.

3) PIX has 3rd party integration products to perform things like HTTP and
email content checking, not so with the routers.

4) PIX can do stateful failover to a backup PIX, routers cannot.

5) It's easier to sell management on a security design that uses PIX vs a
router because all they know is we need a firewall. ;-)

Kent

Re: Cisco Certs [7:8807]

2001-06-16 Thread John Hardman

Hi

There seems to be a move a foot for companies to require a 4 year degree.
But it seems to be somewhat limited to your age group. IMHO if you are under
35 you had better have/get that BS degree, but if you are over 35 then it
really depends more on your experience.

Many companies placing people in senior positions are much more concerned
with experience than degrees. Which makes it fairly easy for someone over 35
or so to land and retain that senior job without a degree. The assumption is
that someone older has had the opportunity to gain many more years of
experience than someone in their twenties.

Where a degree or certification for that matter, really come into play are
with pay scale and if you are a contractor in getting your foot in the door.
I have worked at a couple of companies that have two or three different pay
scales based on rather you are degreed and/or certified or not.

To address the idea that a EE is required to make a good CCIE. Well I have
worked as a engineer and worked with many engineers in fields that are not
engineering related. I find that engineers tend to have a different thought
process than the average person doing IT work, which is a benefit to their
work. Engineers tend to be much more capable of seeing both the fine details
and the big picture, they tend to be very methodical in their approach to
everything they do and this is a benefit IMHO.

Bottom line, some of the best minds the world has ever known have not been
classically educated, Einstein (you know the guy that came up with the
relativity theory and was a high school drop out) comes to mind. It is not
how many certs or degrees you have, it's what you can do.

2001-06-16 Thread Shawn Goodson

All,
If it helps here is a link that has some good information on WOL. There
is a link to AMD in the online references, that has a white paper that
breaks down actual frame, and discusses network and platform issues with
WOL. One section describes how the engineers at IBM used the subnet directed
broadcast for WOL. We don't incorporate the feature at our sites. But I
might try to tinker with it in the lab after reading the posts (peaked my

The no ip directed-broadcast command is for IP, as you can tell. If you
don't see that command in the running config, then ip directed broadcasts
are presumably being forwarded. A directed broadcast is one that comes
from
a device on one segment and is destined to all devices on another network,
for example 10.0.0.1 sending a frame to 172.16.255.255.

But it sounds like ip directed broadcasts won't do you any good because
Wake on LAN isn't an IP packet.

To make the router forward a broadcast that has no network layer you would
 have to turn on bridging.

Re: DHCP Requests across VLANs [7:8689]

2001-06-16 Thread Bob S

I think he said he has one DHCP server, so this example shows three
different DHCP servers. Also, in this example you will not need an IP
helpder address for the DHCP server that is connected directly to this
segment, in this example you will not need ip helper-address 10.70.48.48
under interface vlan 1.

One common application that requires helper addresses is Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which is defined in RFC 1531. DHCP protocol
information is carried inside of BOOTP packets. To enable BOOTP broadcast
forwarding for a set of clients, configure a helper address on the router
interface closest to the client. The helper address should specify the
address of the DHCP server. If you have multiple servers, you can configure
one helper address for each server. Since BOOTP packets are forwarded by
default, DHCP information can now be forwarded by the router. The DHCP
server now receives broadcasts from the DHCP clients.

It's not that Cisco thinks should be forwarded as well but the ip
helper-address by nature of it's feature forward all this UDP broadcast.
It is correct to limit these UDP that are not needed to be no forwarded.

Start a session with the router and insert a 'ip helper' address.

Be carefull though...by default, for whatever reason, cisco thinks netbios
broadcast and name resolution along with dns and a few other broadcasts
should be forwarded as well. You'll need to manually shut these off via
'no
ip forward'

example:

interface Vlan1
  ip address 10.40.48.1 255.255.240.0
  ip helper-address 10.70.48.48
  ip helper-address 10.70.80.30
  ip helper-address 10.70.80.33
  ipx network 104048

Then in global config do the following:

no ip forward-protocol udp tftp
no ip forward-protocol udp domain
no ip forward-protocol udp time
no ip forward-protocol udp netbios-ns
no ip forward-protocol udp netbios-dgm

There is an easy Win NT solution. You can have a one of the servers or
workstations act as a DHCP relay for the other subnets. They will listen
dor
DHCP broadcats and forward them to the proper DHCP server.

ISDN Simulators [7:8860]

local router attempts to dial but the call never occurs. Any suggestions

Re: wake on lan [7:8792]

2001-06-16 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

The paper says that in order for the Wake on LAN frame to get through
routers the Manager station (the one that wakes devices up) must send a UDP
IP directed broadcast. That answers the question as to whether it's an IP
frame or not. Normally it's just an Ethernet frame, but to get through
routers the Manager must be configured to send it as an IP frame. That
makes sense.

I have had different responses from two different newsgroups regarding the

cisco 2600 BOOT ROM? [7:8864]

2001-06-16 Thread anthony moore

There are two chips on the systmem which are right next to each other and
right next to the fan on a 2600 series router. I though that they were the
BOOT ROM. I was later told that the boot ROM is only one chip.
To make a long story short I have a router that is not working. One of
those chips is missing. I replaced them with the chips from another 2600
series router and it worked. Just plopped them in the slots.
Any idea what those chips are, if not BOOT ROM? Know where I can get a
diagram of a 2600 series router motherboard?

Thanks

Teltone ILS-1000 OR 2000?? [7:8866]

Hi all,
I am in the process of purchasing an ISDN simulator. I see the Teltone ILS

Does anyone know the difference b/w the two? And which one is more better in
terms of the CCIE Lab? Are there any others besides Teltone that one could
buy?
Thank you.

Go to the Teletone web site:
www.teltone.com
I believe that the 1000 is an older product no longer manufactured. It may
do the job. Call their customer service and ask the techs.
Emutel makes a less expensive two port ISDN BRI emulator.
The Adtran 550 or 800 are great if you also want to do PRI. .. and have the
budget.
Check the GroupStudy archives for more specific information on these boxes.

Re: BGP on BSCN? [7:8810]

2001-06-16 Thread Michael L. Williams

I know that my brother-in-law swears that about every other question on his
exam was BGP... I had quite a few probably 20% or maybe more..

But aren't these exams adaptive? I.E. if you miss preliminary questions
on a topic, you'll get more of them... I don't know personally, but it
seems to be they are because there were times I'd get 100% in an area and
know that I only got 3 or 4 questions on that topic.. then others that
I'd get 70% in I remembered getting more questions about that topic..

Can anyone confirm/deny this adaptive theory?

Routing exam [7:8873]

2001-06-16 Thread Thomas

Hi All,

I just took the Cisco Routing exam 640-503 this morning. I prepared alot
for it and expected to meet lots of senarioes. However, the questions in
the exam confused the hell out of me. Some questions were so vagued and
less infomation that I didn't even know if they were regarding the OSPF or
EIGRP Other than that, all the topics of the exam are covered on the
Cisco Press I used to prepare for this exam, Building Scalable Cisco
Networks by Catherine Paquet and Diane Teare. I could say the exam covered
30% on both OSPF and BGP, 20% on EIGRP. The rest was for extended IP scheme
(VLSM, address summarization, redistribution...). I got 75 minutes to
complete 61 questions. The passing score is 690 out of 1000.

Well, thank you all for all the supports you gave me in the past, and good
luck to all who are working on this exam. I now start working my Switching
exam.

Thomas
