Re: List Circuitbreakers fired [7:25791]
Why are you tracking people anyways? What do you have to gain? You getting paid by knowing peoples real name and company they work for? Maybe selling it to recruiters? You're the reason why my company uses this kind of secure internet service. It keeps people like you from snooping around our network. Also I never attacked you personally and don't know why you attacked me. It just seems that you would be smart enough to make some cash off your site. No need attack me for making a wrong assumption. Re: CCIE Lab Preparation Workbook [7:24920]
Chuck, As I stated in my previous post, "We are in the process of going through ALL of the labs, removing the errors, removing the old technologies, making the configs standardized for our racks (frame-relay interfaces, router #s, etc), and including pre-config files (for IP addresses, etc, like the new 1-day lab)." Part of the planned changes for the revised labs will reflect the actual interfaces for the routers in our remote racks. (The interfaces in the diagrams will match up with our remote racks). We should have the revised versions released within the next few months. I do have a revised 1-day beta version of Lab19 if you are interested in giving that a run. Lots of BGP Practice [7:25898]
[Hair-brained idea alert!!!] I was thinking, which is sometimes a dangerous thing. What if each of us put a router or two up on our Internet connections and create our own cluster of autonomous systems? This would let me and my 4 routers have more entries in my AS-Path than I could ever do on my own. We could have someone (could be me, but I don't care) coordinate the AS allocation. This way, I could add two or three AS entries to the collection. Someone else could add another 2 or three. Soon, we would have a nice collection that we could really screw up. :-) I'd have to tunnel BGP through my firewall, but that's another challenge. Thoughts? RE: Open BGP Lab - across the net [7:25581]
weekend over. lab shut down. but I believe the couple of people who joined up learned a lot. one of the participants will be taking his CCIE lab this week. I'm waiting the good news. Question came up. One of the participants was able to connect to be using a static default route. He sent me his configs. If that's what's on his router, so be it. However, I know from long hard experience that BGP does NOT form neighbor relationships with a neighbor the route to whom is NOT in the routing table. For example: R8#sh ip bgp 200.0.0.4 % Network not in table R8# as you can see, there is reachability and connectivity: R8#ping 200.0.0.4 Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 200.0.0.4, timeout is 2 seconds: ! Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 8/80/128 ms R8# interestingly, the other side prints out a neighbor report, but indicated that no messages are being received or sent: R4#sh ip bgp nei 222.222.222.8 BGP neighbor is 222.222.222.8, remote AS 44001, external link BGP version 4, remote router ID 0.0.0.0 BGP state = Active Last read 02:42:47, hold time is 180, keepalive interval is 60 seconds Received 0 messages, 0 notifications, 0 in queue Sent 0 messages, 0 notifications, 0 in queue <<<=== no messages sent! Route refresh request: received 0, sent 0 Default minimum time between advertisement runs is 30 seconds For address family: IPv4 Unicast BGP table version 429, neighbor version 0 Index 3, Offset 0, Mask 0x8 0 accepted prefixes consume 0 bytes Prefix advertised 0, suppressed 0, withdrawn 0 Number of NLRIs in the update sent: max 0, min 0 Connections established 0; dropped 0 Last reset never External BGP neighbor may be up to 10 hops away. No active TCP connection R4# the guy who told me he is using static defaults is also using a dial up account to the internet. I am suspecting that concessions are made within the code to accommodate dial up. Anyone have any insight on this? As a result I have a fairly complex setup here in my home lab. So I would like to make my pod available for BGP research across the internet. You can connect your routers to mine using BGP across the net. I will have things set up beginning late Friday - after 7:00 p.m. Pacific Coast time ( Greenwich -8 ) If you would like to connect your routers to mine using BGP across the net, please contact me off line. I will be using AS #49191 for the connect point. my internal AS #'s are , , , 60350, 60400, and 60670 When you contact me, I will need the public IP address of your router, and the AS number for peering. I will answer your e-mail with my own public IP address and the AS# Some things to remember when configuring: 1) there must be a route in your routing table to the IP address I provide. This can be a static route, but a default route or default network will not work 2) remember to use the eBGP multihop command. It does not hurt to use a value greater than 100. The peering establishment process can take a couple of minutes. 3) my connect point AS is in public space, but if my research is correct it is unassigned. Even if it were, there will be no effect on any public internet peering. connections must be configured correctly from both side. 4) I am assuming that people taking me up on this offer will not be using ISP or enterprise equipment to connect. I assume that all acceptors will be using private lab equipment. Do not put your company at risk for something like this study session, something that can be on the chaotic side. 5) people connecting from @home might want to double check their internet connections. I have had some problems connecting to @home users. I have also had some excellent sessions with @home users. 6) I suspect that there are some ISP's who filter BGP traffic. But for the most part, problems have been identified as misconfigurations. rest assured, I have done these sessions several times. It is interesting to do, and it gives me and other participants a chance to try different things based on being connected to an unknown source. Let's have some fun. this is a bit nit-picky, but it is irritating to rent bootcamp rack time, and spend a significant amount of it hassling with the cabling that does not match the lab diagrams. which end is DCE, which end is DTE, and finding you have to cross reference with the updated web pages for the new rack equipment. Re: Salary Expectations/CCNP's!!!!!!!!! [7:25805]
Yeah, that was Chambers all-right. Now if I may digress... Funny thing, a lot of people dismissed Chambers's one-dollar move as just a cheap PR stunt, in that he just wanted to look like he was sharing in the pain of the 8500 layoffs, while not really sharing the pain (i.e. he didn't give up any of his stock options, for example). Fair enough, but on the other hand, I didn't see any other CEO's of companies that did big layoffs doing anything comparable. McNealy of Sun, Barrett of Intel, Roth of Nortel, Fiorina of HP, McGinn/Schacht of Lucent, Armstrong of AT&T, Nasser of Ford (OK, Nasser isn't there anymore), Tucci/Ruettgers of EMC, etc. etc. While slashing thousands from their payroll, did these guys cut their salaries at all? So the way I see it, while of course it is true that Chambers could have done more to share the pain, on the other hand, he did a whole lot more than those other guys did. So you could say that Chambers is a pretty cool guy, relatively speaking. > > > Actually I think I read in an article that Chambers cut his salary to $1.00 > a year. RE: List Circuitbreakers fired [7:25791]
is this post a result of "list envy"? exactly how nice a living do you think Paul makes off this list? as nice as some who use this list to dig them out of holes with their employers or their customers? if groupstudy were a money making operation, there would be a LOT of competition. the success of this list, in terms of usage, good company, a great group of professionals, and sheer size, is due in great part to Paul's selfless efforts and long hours spent keeping things going. I doubt Paul makes a dime off this list. Worse, I doubt he even gets a tax write-off. you, however, get the benefit of the collective expertise found here. which you can then use to your own advantage. hardly seems fair. Re: List Circuitbreakers fired [7:25791]
I do not get paid to manage groupstudy as it is a hobby of mine consuming countless hours of time I should be spending with my family. Every vacation we take gets somehow interrupted by some issue with groupstudy.Plus at times the we could have really used the money spent on GroupStudy for other things. Frankly my wife has been amazing supportive of the entire thing. I was talking to a friend of mine about the pains associated with managing this site. He could not believe all the crap that I need to deal with on a daily basis. So the next day I decided to keep a log of all of the things that I needed to take care of for that particular day. I was going to publish it but was later advised against it (see item 1). In a nutshell, on this one particular day I spent most of the day (in between doing my "real" job): 1. Dealing with a person who was threatening to sue me over a posting another list member sent (under the belief that I am responsible). This person was also suing the poster and the poster's company in an attempt to get the guy fired. I know this because he insisted on courtesy copying everyone involved on all correspondence. $100's of dollars in legal fees later I learned that the entire thing was frivolous and the courts were quite clear with numerous decisions that I am not liable. The case was later dropped. But it is still not pleasant to think that your financial future may be jepodized over a hobby. 2. Trying to help a person get off the list. I needed him to send me a header of one of the e-mails but everytime I asked for the header he would respond with obscenities and demand to be removed. But I needed the headers to figure out how he was receiving the messages. He ended up bouncing all of his messages (out of some sort of warped revenge) to my personal e-mail account. But at least then I was able to view the header and get him off the list. What I don't understand is if he was capable of bouncing e-mails to a third account, why all the obscenity? He should have understood the reasoning and just sent me the headers. 3. Tracked someone down at Cisco's request who broke the CCIE NDA. 4. Did an interview for a magazine for an article on GroupStudy.com. 5. Tracked down a hacker who had broken into a companies machine and was now attacking groupstudy.com. After blocking that machine from GroupStudy, I wrote to the contacts listed in the whois database. By some strange coincidence the security offer of the company called me (who I had never spoken to before) to discuss a matter concerning a posting on one of the lists that needs to be removed. He had no idea there was this problem with the hacker but was able to get me in contact with the technical people in the company so I could explain. If this was a job, believe me I would quit! We do sell a limited amount of banner ads, but that money goes towards the upkeep of the servers and lessens the burden of this site on me financially. For a while I was spending close to $1000/month on bandwidth before InFlow rescued us by giving the site free bandwidth. Now we seem to be at a break even point and may even have enough money for that new shinny server I have my eye on :-). So to make a long story short, Money OUT > Money IN while I believe most jobs use the formula Money IN > Money OUT. But like a real job AGGRAVATION>APPRECIATION. Paul Borghese P.S. Please let's improve the list by using our real names instead of cowarding behind a yahoo account and using anonymizer.com. Indeed, the translation of a toll-free number will vary with where you are. In a PBX, etc., this is called a rotary or hunt group. Originally, when you ordered 555-1000 and 30 lines, you'd actually get 555-1000 through 555-1029. More modern switching systems don't need to do that; they can associate 30 accesses with one number. A true PBX extension is something else--it has local significance only at the PBX, and is not known to the telephone network. There are "extensions" that really are associated with telephone numbers and either can be reached from the operator or by Direct Inward Dialing (that is the proper term). Re: Firewalls [7:25777]
Ah ha- I just spent the last month answering these question and more, as I was asked to research firewall solutions for my employer. There are two types of firewall in used today: Proxy based (i.e. Symantec, better known as Raptor) and Stateful (i.e. PIX and CheckPoint). Proxy firewalls intercept all requests. To a network device, the proxy firewall knows everything. This is the most secure of all firewalls, but it can become slow. Every request is authenticated, state is established, then it's taken to layer 7 for checking against a well know RFC. Stateful firewalls differ, but mainly work by making this process modular. Traffic is authenticated, state is established, and layer 7 checking is occasionally brought into play. Cisco and CheckPoint are a little sketchy with how they both handle this. I essence- user traffic (in the form of a conversation) passing through a stateful firewall, must reach some level of trust to gain a dynamic rule in the state table. As the firewall- if your conversation is tested and fits requirements (rule sets), why do I need to do anything above securing that connection against exploit. With a proxy, every request in that conversation is test as if untrusted. Some pro's and con's Proxying is the most secure (minus vendor and platform exploits) Proxy is slower and requires beefier servers, when compared to appliances like the Nokia Firewall 1 and PIX. Stateful is not as secure, in the same sense as the proxy is secure. The modularity allows this type of firewall to focus on dynamic perimeter security and not become tied to the latest patch of firewall software. Proxy firewalls require patches or upgrades to allow new applications and RFC's. This two adds a bone of contention, when the patch contains a new exploit or performance degration. I would write more, but my 3 month old is telling me E-mail time is up :o) Phil - Original Message - From: "John Tafasi" To: Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2001 11:58 PM Subject: CID: Firewalls [7:25777] > Hi Group, > > I a little confused about osi layers at different types of firewalls work > (proxy, packet filters and stateful firewalls). Re: ATM reference??????? [7:25802]
I got up to speed a few years ago with old Global Knowledge class books. As far as the initial foundations for ATM, I highly recommend the Ciscopress WAN Quick Start book. The one ATM chapter in that book has probably the best explanation of ATM and ATM COS I have ever read. .02 Phil - Original Message - From: "Kelsey Miller" To: Sent: Sunday, November 11, 2001 7:22 AM Subject: ATM reference??? Re: Min router model to run BGP , OSPF , rip , eigrp and igrp [7:25820]
Add ISIS to the list and yes you can have basic IP IOS running these routing protocols, starting (I'd say) with the 1600 series and UP. Now to handle the 120,000 prefixes out on the Internet is another story entirely :o) All the best !!! Re: CCIE Lab Preparation Workbook [7:24920]
Jason, Hi! thanks for the information. what technical topics did we miss in our lab scenerios? also, here is the general list of equipment you can use to do our labs: 2x 2501s (R1, R4) 2x 2503s (for ISDN) (R5, R6) 1x 2511 (reverse telnet AS) (access-server, can also use for R9) 3x 2513s (TR/Ether) (R2, R3, R8) (or for R8 you can use a 4000M) 1x 2522 (frame-switch) (R7) 2x 36xx (voice/atm) (R13/R14, or R11/R12) ISDN Simulator Catalyst 5k switch: sup1/WS-X5213 3900 TR Switch LS1010 (to do most of the labs, you can get away with just the 2500 series routers, and skip the ATM/voice stuff. you can then do the ATM/voice stuff on a remote rack) That's pretty much the list of gear that you need. When you say "different equipment" are you referring to the different cabling you need to do? There is a standard cabling methodology that we use on our racks so we do not have to re-cable the hardware. If you would like to know what that is, you can check out our website. As far as presentation goes, we have them on single sheets of paper so it makes it easier for you to do your labs. We could bind them together, but then it would make it much harder. Besides, do you really care if it looks pretty or not? The focus of our labs are to help you pass your CCIE, plain and simple. We go right for the throat, and don't mess around! :) Our scenarios our completely focused on the high-level engineer and expect the individual to really "know there stuff." I thought I knew everything before I bought the bootcamp labs (and before I even knew of ccbootcamp). After I went through lab8, I realized how little I actually knew, and got my butt in gear for my studying. We are in the process of going through ALL of the labs, removing the errors, removing the old technologies, making the configs standardized for our racks (frame-relay interfaces, router #s, etc), and including pre-config files (for IP addresses, etc, like the new 1-day lab). I would have replied personally, but you didnt include your email address. Sorry for the long winded response. Re: Help Error on Boot up [7:25754]
It's not a problem, just a warning that you've upgraded your image and there may be lines in your configuration which are no longer supported. Just ignore it. I'm not too sure what actions get rid of it. Something I've not bothered to think about before. Be interesting to find out I suppose. Does it go away the first time you do a write mem? If you copy the config, do a write erase and paste it back in, are there lines which are not accepted? All these questions make me realise I'm only giving you a half answer, so anybody else please take over. I haven't got a router with me to find out. It's not a problem anyway. Has any one play with BUSY-MESSAGE command for Telnet [7:25816]
Hello, I am trying to use the busy-message command to customzie the message that I see when I initiate a telnet connection. R1 R2 Assume R1 has IP: 1.1.1.1 and R2 has 1.1.1.2 R1 is the calling router. So I configured the following in order to customzie the message on R1 ip host CALLED-LINE 1.1.1.2 busy-message CALLED-LINE \ Test 123 \ line vty 0 4 autocommand telnet CALLED-LINE /stream When i try to telnet for example telnet 1.1.1.2 I don't see any custom messages. I see the plain old message. Does any one have done such lab? The best method to deal with any IP addressing problem, including subnet masks and wildcard masks, is to convert everything to binary. Both the IP address and the subnet/wildcard mask have 32 bits. In the long run, for success in this area you should try to think in binary as much as possible and always keep those 32 bits in mind. In my opinion you'd do well to steer clear of those freeware subnet calculators. You should learn to do it in your head or on a napkin in 3-4 minutes. As you know, the wildcard mask is mostly for access lists and does everything "backwards" from a subnet mask. Let's take an example. If I have a subnet 10.0.0.0 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 this means I have eight (8) ones in the first octet and the "10" is the network portion and the other 24 bits (three octets of 0.0.0) can be used for hosts. This means that 10.1.234.16 and 10.168.3.53 are on the same subnet. So if we wanted to make an access list that applied only to the 10.x.x.x subnet we would use a wildcard mask of 0.255.255.255 ( 8 zeroes and 24 ones) because in wildcard masks the zeroes mark the network portion of the address. Re: pix helding [7:25796]
Sounds like a hardware failure or bad image of the PIX OS. Have you tried reinstalling or upgrading the OS? You could also set up a SYSLOG server & set up logging to see if it's trying to tell you what's wrong. Also, just a shot in the dark, try setting duplex manually instead of setting to auto. That may have nothing to do with it but it's a good idea anyway.
