Hi,
I need to connect two offices with VPN. They both can only get an
Internet Connection with dynamic IP addresses, static addressing is not

Is there a possibility to establish a connection?

Thanks in advance.

RE: HSRP - hows it work [7:24721]

2001-10-31 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi group,

Who have used the 'standby track serial 0' command
before, while configuring HSRP.

I tried it and was disappointed because, my two
upstream providers are connected via a radio
(microwave link). Even when one of them is down, the
radio coneected to the router still send keepalives to
the route and as such the interface does not go down,
and as such the HSRP does not work when any of the
upstream goes down.

Has anyone being able to solve this problem?

Multihoming Without BGP!!!!!....How Posible???? [7:20305]

2001-09-18 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi all,

first let me pay tribute to my numerous Networking
colleagues, who lost their life while in active
service at WTC and Pentagon that fatefull Tuesday and
may God grant their love ones in this group the
courage to bear the lost. I stand with the popular
side 'Terrorism must be completely stamped out'

I will need some help with this configuration am
proposing.

I want to implement multihoming for one of my clients
and I do not want to use BGP at all neither do I want
to ask each of my upstream providers to route the
other provider's Set of IP Addresses given to me,
through its own Network. I have two Routers called
RouterA and RouterB. RouterA have three ethernet ports
(EA1, EA2 and EA3), while RouterB have two ethernet
ports (EB1 and EB2).

My two upstream providers (ISPs) are Source1 with IP
address 63.98.9.0 255.255.255.0 and Source2 with IP
address 100.10.10.0 255.255.255.0. Source1's link is
terminated on port EA1 on RouterA while Source2's link
is terminated on port EA2 on RouterA as well. Port EA3
on RouterA is connected to port EB1 on RouterB, while
Port EB2 on RouterB is connected to my Access layer
Switch.

That is the schematic above, my proposed configuration
is stated below:

RouterA(Config)#Interface EA1
RouterA(Config-inf)#IP Address 63.98.9.1 255.255.255.0

Undefined Port Adapter type 55 at bay 1 [7:20112]

2001-09-16 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi,

I have a 2621 router with 8M flash and 32M Ram. I
inserted a network module with 1 ethernet port into
it, the IOS 12.0 did not recognize it. It only sees
the FastEthernet ports that came with the router.
Upgrading the memory to 64M did not help issues,
Changing the module with two other onces did not help
the situation.

However, the IOS keep saying that the Adapter ports
are undefined.

Looking forward to your response.

CID Exam!!!--- - - Stratacom Switches [7:18476]

2001-09-04 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi group,

Am bill to write my CID exam in 4 days time, am using
the cisco press book. However, the book did not give
stratacom switches any treament except for a few lines
and they test this area heavyly I learnt in the exam.
I have done a lot of searches even in CCO but could
not locate any white paper on this subject.

Please, help with a link or URL where I can get a
white paper on this switch. The URL provided in the
cisco press book did not help issues and on CCO, the
only thing I saw was how Cisco aquire stratacom in
1996, I wonder whether they will ask one that in the
exam. Any link will help, please.

Also feed me on the last minute check-list on the CID
exam.

RE: VLAN Security [7:18203]

2001-09-02 Thread Trevor J Corness, CCNA

Well, it depends.. I definately still would not VLAN off ports from a big
switch.. do you plan on putting a NetManager box on the inside, and wanting
to monitor the DMZ Hub/Switch? If not, a Cat3524XL could be best (though
I've had bad track record personally with those boxes, I'm sure over-all
they're fine.. I've just been unlucky to come across 14 bad ones out of 17
I've installed).

Anyways.. hope you can straighten it out.. those are just my .02c worth.

CID Exam--How difficult????????? [7:17497]

2001-08-27 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi group,

Am finally going for my CID examination on Saturday.
Has any one written the exam lately? I heard that
cisco is planning to change the course content. What
is its difficulty level? I already have CCNA, CCDA
and
CCNP. I understand alot of people do fail this exam,

what are the things to silence areas to keep watch on

and what are the areas to give less attention.

AM using the Cisco Press, Internetwork Design book by

Matthew H. Birkner CCIE #3719, how good is this text?

Do I need the appendix section of the book for the
exam or it is just met for general knowledge?

 Sorry for being this inquisitive.

Please feed me as much as possible about this exam
 without violating the NDA.

 regards.

VoIP Traffic Shaping Config [7:14451]

2001-07-31 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill CCNA, CCDA, CCNP.

Hi folks,

Hope this newsgroup does not make me lazy!!!
hehehehehe

I have a problem guys. I have a Cisco 3640 configured
with an FXS voice module (2 voice ports). I am
contending with a 28.8k link to my head office. I do
voice and data on that link. However, i need to
restrict my voice calls to one at a time. I have done
some QOS on that link. In addition, i want the two
voice ports on the FXS VIC to be operational. Is
there a command which i can use to disable one voice
port automatically when i am using the second port?
What i really mean is to have one port disabled as
soon as i pick up the handset attached to the other
port. You get what i mean? Well the reason behind
this is that i don't want my colleagues (who think
28.8k is a heaven)to use more than one handset at a
time to call the head office. But i want port 3/1/0
and port 3/1/1 to be active so that any can be used at
any time (not simultaenously).

Regards!!!

Cisco Press Vs Sybex Which Way Forward ===> [7:13243]

2001-07-22 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill CCNP, CCNA.

Hi group,
(Please contribute to this trend from you own experience. This is my own
experience and perception and I will accept responsibilities for been wrong
and will learn from my errors through your contribuctions)

I wrote my last CCNP exam 23rd of last month and that was BCRAN, all through
my CCNP series I used Cisco press except for BCSN ---I did not use any book
for this exam, I depend on the internet, CCO and many white papers on RIP,
RIPv2, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP.

I wrote my CCDA exam two days ago and I used Sybex cos I could not lay my
hands on Cisco press. Guess what, I saw hell in the exam hall. At the end of
the day I passed not because I have read the sybex book but because of the
residual knowledge I had gathered from my CCNP series and other things. From
then I made a decision never to read sybex. Even 20 minutes before the exam
at
the exam centre I saw cisco press book displayed on the bookstand, curiousity
made me to pick it and just flip through it, on going through it, I
discovered
that I was not yet prepared for the exam going by the standard set by Todd
lammle in his sybex book, but it was too late to cancel the exam, I had to
write it anyhow and thank God I passed.

I will be taking my CID to obtain my CCDP by the end of this month, I have
taken the extra effort to comb the whole town and have secured a Cisco press
book for that exam.

Todd Lammle would do us in the networking field a lot of good if he go and
get
his CCNP. He can't be writing CCDA, CCNP and CCIE books gear towards the exam
proper, without passing through the examination process. Good, he might be a
good writer and also might have some wealth of experience. But you would
agree
with me that, the exams are different scenerio from the day to day hands-on
job and it is a different ball game from one having experience. Many who
boast
of tons of years of experience can go in for these exams and still fail it.

Let Todd Lammle at be patience and only write books for which he is
certified,
by this he will gain more popularity. I like his books for their simpilicity
and easy of understanding, but what am against is that do not use that to
shield me from difficult and complex areas the exam would be bordered on.

Am sorry, not against Todd Lammle in any sense, I appreciate his great
contributions to us the networking folks, am only trying to suggest ways
through which he can really be of more immense surpport and help to us.

Please you are free to confirm or otherwise contradict what I have just said.

I wish you all well.

My 2 cents
Regards.

Re: More newbie questions [7:11102]

2001-07-05 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill CCNP, CCNA.

DMZ zone which is the short form for 'Demilitazed Zone' (You can get the
clue from the name itself, it presupposes that, there is a militazed zone
and a Demilitazed zone, a secure zone and an unsecure zone if you would
prefer it that way). It a zone in between two routers, the otherside router
faces the internet while the inside router faces your
internal network.

The purpose of this is to place the highest possible security restrictions
into your internal network without preventing people from accessing services
like WWW, email server, etc. This zone is where you put your webserver,
email server and firewall. The otherside router allows free unhindered
access into this area for people to access these information and they can
not go beyond this area except they have certain priviliges you have defined
in the second router that permit access into your internal network.

The aux port is just like the console port, which I believe you know about,
the only different is that for the aux port you need a phone line a modem
connected to it, so that you can remotely dial into the router through the
aux port for the purposes of configurations, etc.

Good luck.

Regards.
Oletu

say CCNA, CCDA, CCDP, CCNP+voice, CCNP+security, etc I have not gone against
the agreement, cos I rest on the strenght of the word 'MAY' It is true that
these look redundant but many HR would prefer that to someone that just put
CCNP, CCDP. The guy who did this exams want a return in terms of good jobs,
etc, so putting all these will fetch him the desired job, no harm.

There was a trend in this group where someone said he attended a job fair
with his friend, he has his CCNP and his friend have CCNA. To follow the
rules he only put CCNP in his resume. Many employers were in favour of his
friend's CCNA cos, according to him, they said 'They are not doing CCNP
stuffs' but have a lot to do with CCNA in their company. Out there many HR
knows just two cisco certifications ie CCNA and CCIE. Until Cisco or whoever
completely educate all the HRs and many others, it is better to play safe.

Regards.
Oletu.

CCDA after CCNP, How tough???? [7:10960]

2001-07-03 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill CCNP, CCNA.

Hi,

Please tell me more about the CCDA exam, I recently got my CCNP, I want to
get
my CCDP before going for the CCIE written, I gather that despite my CCNP, I
would have to do CCDA.

Am preparing for the CCDA now to write it sometime this week. Am using CCDA
by
Todd Lammle(Sybex). I found alot of CCNA and BCSN stuffs in the book, I only
have about one or two chapters dealing with hardware and other stuffs.

Please can someone tell me whether the sybex book is enough or I need some
other materials. A friend was once telling me to read up SOHO and other
remote/Home office devices covered in BCRAN nothing was mentioned about these
in the sybex book. Do I need these additional knowledge? Please help.

Thanks.

Regards.

Re: my test [7:10340]

2001-06-28 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

I envy your courage, keep it up. The most important thing is to keep the
fighting spirit on. Do not quit, you will definitely win.

I had the same experience, CCNA was my first certification exams, the exam
was changed from version 1 to 2, July last year and when I was preaparing
for the test. I was reading Sybex version 1 and all that and was thinking
that the pass mark was still 755. I knew the difference a day before the
exam, there was nothing I could do at that momwnt, I went in for the exam,
what happened? I failed, got 806 and I need 812 to pass. I ran to the bank
cleared my account borrow money went back that VERY SAME day and booked for
the exam again. That day was a Thursday, I scheduled the exam for Tuesday
the week following, so short a time you might say, but at the end of that
D-day I scored 903.

So, keep ip up, you will fly.

Good luck.

Re: BCRAN test....was there fill in the blank? [7:10284]

2001-06-28 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

No, I did BCRAN last week, the commands did not require you to know the
modes and you do not need to type in the modes, it was exactly like this:

For the purpose of making it clear so that many will benefit, am going into
these example question, it does not represent any exact exam question, it is
just to drive home the point this trend is generating, so that would be
writers of these exams will be better guided.

Which command is used to trigger load backup when the primary link has
reached 50% utilization and will remain up, even when the primary link
utilization decreases.

You will then be asked to click on the exhibit, where you will see things
like:

1. backup interface 50 never
2. encapsulation ppp
3. ppp authentication chap
4. framing esf
5. x25 map ip 10.98.98.25 65252525552 broadcast
6. backup load 50 never

We will then be required to type in the correct command.

Offcourse the answer you will type in this particular case will be 'backup
load 50 never' . you do not need to type:

'Router2(config-if)# backup load 50 never'

Cos there was no option like this and you are not require to do it, you do,
you got it wrong.

I wrote the BCSN on April 20 this year. In the case of BCSN you must know
the modes cos the options were like this:

1. Router#Show running-configuration
2. Router(config)#ip address 65.76.123.1 255.0.0.0
etc

In the case of BCSN you are only required to type in the number
corresponding to the correct command, ie either 1 or 3 or 4. You are not
required to they in the command itself.

Note:
Am driven the more to do this cos, I do not want anybody in this list to
make the same mistake I made when I was writing my BCSN. Because of what I
gathered before that very exam from some one, mostly cos of the near
demi-god that exam had been publicly proclaimed to be, I was so filled with
emotions, so getting there, questions like the last set above were asked,
cos of what I had gathered either in the group or elsewhere, I just type-in
the exact command as it appears in the exhibit I was shown ie something like
'Show running-configuration' instead of '1' . I had done this for about 5
very cheap questions until I realized my mistakes (then the tension had cold
down, cos I discovered that the exam was not a demi-god afterall), but you
know it is adaptative, I can't go back. I lost good 5 cheap questions. Well,
I passed with about 854.

So please, be calm, the exams are very simple, read your cisco press or any
material you are using very well. Close your pick up the pinted scheme for
that particular exam you must have downloaded from www.cisco.com or
elsewhere, look at the outline and see whether you can explain all the
topics, practice as many sample questions as possible, and you will fly at
the end of the day.

Regards.
Oletu

Support 2.0  ==12/6/2001
Remote Access2.0 ==23/6/2001

I almost went to sleep after Routing 2.0, but it is easy. Which next Design
track or Security track or CCIE written??

Please write to advice me.

After CCNP what Next [7:9149]

2001-06-20 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

Hi Everyone,

I have just Remote Access 2.0 between me and my CCNP cert and by Saturday
this
week, I would have been a CCNP certified. My problem seem to be the way
forward, before now I had been thinking of getting my CCDP before focusing
strength on the all important CCIE. I seem to gather last night from Cisco
site that CCDA is a prerequisite for CCDP and I have not written my DCN (CCDA
exam). confirm whether my findings about the CCDA prerequisite is true.

The dilemmna is, should I write DCN, then CID to get my CCDP as well or I
should forget all that and concentrate on my CCIE written? I am more for the
latter, to me once one have his CCIE, there will be no need for titles like:

Oletu Godswill, CCDP, CCNP, etc, etc, . It will just be
Oletu Godswill, CCIE #

Please, I want to hear your own point of view.

Regards.
Oletu H. Godswill.

Please Help with VLSM [7:9024]

2001-06-18 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

Hi group,

Please just throw more light of this. If I have a block of ip address, can I
use different subnets for different purposes like this:

If my block is 216.73.203.0

1. 216.73.203.0/26 4 Networks, 64 Hosts each
2. 216.73.203.0/27 -- 8 Networks, 32 Hosts each
3. 216.73.203.0/28 -- 16 Networks, 16 Hosts each
4. 216.73.203.0/29 -- 32 Networks, 8 Hosts each
5. 216.73.203.0/30 -- 64 Networks, 4 Hosts each.

My desire is to use the item 5 for all my WAN links since it only have 2
valid
hosts per network and the rest for other purposes.

But my problem is if I have use two same IP-addresses but from different
networks (eg one from item 3 and the other from item 4 above) assigned to two
different hosts on both ends of a routable network, wouldn't the system
response with a conflict/duplication of IP-addresses or give some other kind
of error?
Eg If, I have this scenerio:

Host A = 216.73.203.21 255.255.255.248 (ie a host on network
216.73.203.16/29)
Host B = 216.73.203.21 255.255.255.252 (ie another host on network
216.73.203.20/30)

Questions:
Since both hosts are on both sides of a routable network:
1. Wouldn't there be an IP-address conflict?
2. Wouldn't it be a duplication of IP-address?
3. If I ping 216.72.207.21, which of the two host will reply?

OR
4. Is it that I can only variably subnet a block of IP-addresses once, say
/29
and use only hosts from that subnet and cannot do another subnetting on that
same block when the need arises?

These are my questions.

How I wish someone can clear this, for it will help myself and many other
people in the group.

Rgards.
Oletu

Confused about Cisco Agreement [7:8819]

2001-06-16 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

Has anyone really taken time to read and thoroughly understand the Cisco
examination agreement page?

The item 6 in that agreement reads(ie page 2 of your score sheet) "Not to
sell, license, distribute, give away, or obtain from any OTHER source OTHER
THAN CISCO the exam materials, questions or answers"

Is Cisco trying to say that obtaining exam materials from Sybex, boson,
certifyexpress, cramsession, wanpro, certificationzone, and passing on same
materials to friends who need them for their exams or borrowing others is
illegal? If that is not what they meant, I think it is good they re-amend
that item 6.

Am confused, can someone explain better to me. Are mind by this enslaved to
cisco for all my materials relating to the exams or what do they really mean.

Regards.
Oletu

CIT Down 1 to go [7:8311]

2001-06-13 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

Hi Group,

It was not easy, but it all ended well yesterday by my passing the CIT exam
with 885 scores. What surprised me most was the grouping of the exam. I was
scored 75% in HDLC and I can't remember answering any question on that.

I wrote Switching 2.0 last week Tuesday, With my passing Support 2.0
yesterday, it is now left with Remote Access which must be hacked down early
next week. After that the week following will definitely see CID down as
well.

Am greatful to all in this group your immense support has been of great value
to me.

Have a nice day.

Which is the Best Book on the CID test [7:8117]

2001-06-11 Thread Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA.

I will be writing my CIT today, I wrote Switching 2.0 last week Monday and
will wrap up my quest for CCNP next week by writing Remote Access 2.0 . I
would have taken the CID next week instead of Remote Access, but for want of
the real book to go for. My target is to become a CCNP and a CCDP by the last
week of this month, nothing more nothing less.

Please can any one help me with the correct book to use? I have been using
Cisco press all these while, but recently popular options in the group did
not
favour the Cisco press for its lack of focus on the exam proper.

Please which of the book will be more focused.

Where is the Missig Link [7:7304]

2001-06-05 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi Group,

Please if you can just drop a line across to me, it
might really help me.

Has any one install a 2600 series router at the other
end of a microwave radio link through the ethernet
port be it 0/0 or 0/1?

I have tried this on several occasions but it would
not work, for reasons I have not found out.

The setup is like this. I have a microwave radio link
which is perfect. If you connect your computer to the
the radio through a cross-over cable you would browse
the net fine. My desire is to place this client in a
different subnet/network. I introduce a router in
place of the computer connecting to e0/0 of the 2600
using a cross-over cable. The other e0/1 of the
router is then connected to the computer using another
cross-over cable. The radio is getting its link from
another router whose ip-address is 64.86.155.221/28,
the radio's ip-address is 64.86.155.155/28, the e0/0
interface of the 2600 is 64.86.155.156/28, the e0/1 is
192.168.0.1/24. The routing protocol is 'igrp 200'.

After the above configurations, the best I can get is
the replication of all the routes learned by this
router from the other one over the microwave radio
link, but my computer can browse the net. Remove the
2600 router and plug the computer straigt into the
radio you would be able to browse the net.

This is my dilemma. The questions that race through my
mind without answer are:

1. Is it that I can't use the interface e0/0 and e0/1
to make a WAN link over a microwave radio?

2. Do I need to install an ethernet interface WAN
module in the WAN slot provided in the router.

3. Are mine just missing something.

4. Please remind me of what the missing link seem
like.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

BCMSN Exams [7:3157]

2001-05-04 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi All,

Am bill to write this exam next week. I need some helping tips:

1. What is the pass mark for the exam?
2. Am using the Cisco press book for BCMSN by Karen Webb. Is this book
enough?
Surprising, this book did not cover topics like DDR, Cisco TAC/CCO, ATM/LANE,
etc which I gather from cisco site that are some of the test areas. Should I
forget about these and just concentrate on the cisco press book or I should
get other additional materials?
3. What is the difficulty level of the exam when compared with BCSN?

Thanks for your respond.

addresses to e0, no internet access, another router, or setting up a win2k
box with dual NICs and enabling IP Forwarding (routing). The only
stipulation is that the one particular Win2k box will be plugged into the
production lan ETHERNET segment.

If finding funding for another router such as a 1005 with a serial and
ethernet interface is nigh on impossible, it may be time to reconsider where
you are working.. especially if it is required to support confidence in the
health state of the production network. A 1005 shouldn't cost more than
$300USD.. how expensive is an hour of downtime on the production network
worth? 4 hours? 8 hours? It's simple business politics and accounting..
time to learn how to justify testing gear cost.

ok heres another spanner in the works so to speak, how about if I setup one
of my win2k boxes as a router (in the test Lan) and via a couple of serial
to ethernet adapters (with a 10baseT crossover cable in between) connected
it to the serial connection of the cisco router? surely if feesible that
would make more sense than binding two ips to one ethernet card, (basically
i dont want any packets taking a "short cut" from the test lan to the
production lan) i know this scenario is far fetched but trying to get
funding for such a "minor" project such as wan traffic is nigh on
impossible!! some people have no idea!!

it is possible, but not advisable in an undetermined lab environment. A
chattering win2k box could cause problems for your production network.
Given limited resources though, I suppose you could do it.

conf t
int e 0
ip address 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 (Production Network)
  ip address 192.168.100.0 255.255.255.0 secondary (Win2K Lab)

would be sufficient. This would also allow ip routing between the Win2k
lab, and the production network. Running 2 LANs off of 1 segment
though,
you are making all of your production network machines look at the MAC
address broadcasts from your lab. If both are of a substantial size, it
may
create a performance issue on your production network. It is really a
design issue.

what do you think?

You can not "add" any interfaces to an existing 2500-series router..
and
like Jenny said, this sounds more like a 2503. Another possibility,
would
be to find another 2501/2503 router, use a back-to-back serial, and use
the
ethernet on that router to your lab. Your lab would look a little like
this:

Outside world

(BRI)
  |
  Cisco 250x -(e0)LAN
   |
  (S0)
   |
  Cisco 250x -(e0)Win2k Lab

WAN Connection Through Ethernet Interface [7:1955]

2001-04-25 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi,

Is it possible for me to connect a production WAN interconnecting two cisco
routers with a microwave radio link in between through their ethernet
interface? Or must it be through the serial interface.

I have a cisco 2621 and 2511, with no add-on card. Which means, I just have 2
fastethernet interfaces on the 2621 and 1 serial interface with 1 ethernet
interface on the 2511. The serial interface on the 2511 has been connected to
another WAN. Am implementing a second WAN connection from the ethernet
interface of the 2511 through a microwave radio-link using speedlan radios to
1 of the fastethernet interfaces in the 2621.

After everything, 'show cdp neighbor' works fine on both routers. 'show ip
route' also works fine on both router. Pinging is okay. But from does prompt
in a workstaion attached to the 2611 router through a 3com switch 'tracert'
did not work, though 'ping' works fine and I can not browse the ethernet
either.

What might be the problem? What am I missing out? Or is it that WAN
connectivity can only be achieved through serial interface connection?
..??

Many questions, few answers.

Regards.
Oletu.

Strange Configuration, Strange Result [7:1763]

2001-04-24 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Am trying to connect two cisco routers each on both side of two speedlan
radios and antenna. In place of the second router was a 3com switch before
now, and with that connection I can browse the internet.

I now replace the switch with a router, the connection from the radio into
the
router was made using a cross connect rj45 cable. After all configuration,
show ip route duplicates all the routes from the first router into the second
router. Everything seem okay. But outside the route I cannot browse the
internet.

Both routers were connected together via the radios through their ethernet
interfaces. The questions now is, 1. Can't I connect two routers via a radio
through their ethernet interfaces? 2. If the answer is NO, why then was 'show
cdp neighbor' showed me the second router, why was the line protocol up, why
was the routing table forwarded to my second router? 3. Is there anything I
am
missingup?

Thanks

actual speed (BW) on a Frame-Relay circuit

This is actually more complicated than you think. :-) Which do you
want to know, the speed of the link or the available bandwidth? If it's
the latter, what do you mean by available? Do you want to know the CIR?
Or how much you can burst over your CIR?

Let's say you have a frame relay T-1. The speed of that link is always
1.544 Mbps. If you send data across that link, regardless of the CIR,
the data is travelling at 1.544 Mbps! Because it's frame relay, you
might be paying for a certain CIR which is a statistical parameter that
sometimes doesn't have much to do with how much data you can push across
that link.

In fact, if your provider isn't experiencing any congestion, then CIR
doesn't mean squat as far as I'm concerned. Whenever you exceed your
CIR, frames in the cloud can be marked as Discard Eligible. All that
means is that during times of congestion, those get dropped first. If
there's no congestion, DE status doesn't mean much.

So, to answer your question... The speed of the link is whatever your
link speed is.The CIR can usually be seen by using the command
"show frame-relay map".

I hope that helps and didn't just confuse the issue more. I may have
been imprecise, and if I have others will surely correct me.

Regards,
John

Re: Signs of LANE Incompatability (Nortel & Cisco) ???

2001-02-11 Thread Alex Kuhn, MCSE, CCNA

We had Centillions and 5000 Series at our edge and at our core, and had such problems
getting them to connect to our Cisco Core routers with ATM LANE that Cisco provided a
special IOS version for our routers to keep it running. I was told it was built just
for our network.

We ended up dumping all our nortel gear, and all the ATM, and going straight Cisco
GigE.

Where we used to have a major outage a couple times a month with Nortel/Cisco/ATM, we
haven't had one in 8 months with Cisco/Cisco/GigE.

801 to the Internet

2001-01-31 Thread CCNA

Hi,

I would like to connect to the Internet using my 801 router. Is there a way
to accomplish this without having a fixed IP-address. I mean just as a normal
PC connecting to the internet.

3600 Flash

2001-01-30 Thread CCNA

Hi All,
I need some help.I am replacing the flash memory of my 3620 router
from 16MB (8x2) to 32 (16x2). I have taken out both flash SIMMS and inserted
the new Flash SIMMs
(They are blank). After I inserted the Flash SIMMs the router's "syetem" LED
started blinking constantly. I have also replaced the DRAMs from 24 MB to
64 (16x4) but they are fine.
Following is the error message

System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA2, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE
(fc1)
Copyright (c) 1999 by cisco Systems, Inc.
C3600 processor with 65536 Kbytes of main memory
Main memory is configured to 64 bit mode with parity disabled

loadprog: error - Invalid image for platform

boot: cannot load "flash:"
System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA2, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELRELEASE SOFTWARE
(fc1)
.
.
romon1>.

What I want to ask is is it possible that we can insert a brand new flash in
the router and install the new IOS in it provided there is no flash Memory
in it on other slots or I can only upgrade not replace the flash SIMMs with
the new ones???

What should I do to make it work ?? I have a 3640 router also. Can it be of
my help in any way ? How can I insert the new flash of 16MB in 3640
which has 8 MB SIMM and copy the IOS in it and place it back to 3620 ??
Partition like thing ..
Please giude me.

Thanks to All

Nickel,

Is there any fill in the blank type of question for BCRAN?

Tony Chen

>>> "Gabriel Nickel" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 11/21/00 07:51AM >>>
Yes!!!
Compared to Routing and Switching i found this exam fairly easy. There
were like 20 choose-IOS-command-from-list questions. The
following subjects were covered:
- Frame Relay
- X25
- AAA/Security
- ISDN
- Dialup, Modem Config
- Router and Connection Deployment
- PPP
- NAT

I took the Boson #1 and COLT test and read the Ciscopress BCRAN book by
Paquet (except for the chapter dealing with the 700's). The
list, off course, is also a great resource.

No Domain Server Found

2001-01-11 Thread Mr. Oletu Hosea Godswill, CCNA

Hi all,

I have a little problem with my LAN. Most likely I am not think alright =
presently.

In a bid to preserved our public IP Address, I installed a proxy Server =
Software on one of the PCs that have a public IP Address, this PC is =
connected to a central Switch to which the main radio gateway to our =
Service Provider is connected.

The Proxy Server host PC have two NICs installed one pointing outside =
and the other pointing inward. I assigned private IP Address 192.168.z.x =
to the one pointing inward. The other PCs in the LAN have address ranges =
of 192.168.z.x+1. The internet explorer was configured to use the proxy =
to connect to the internet.

When I try to log into the domain from the workstations, I keep =
receiving the message 'No Domain Server Available to validate your =
Password.". When I click Okay, and the systems boots. I found out =
that I can ping the Domain controller and other workstations in the LAN =
and can as well browse the internet via the proxy on the Domain =
controller, but when I click Network Neigborhood I can only see the =
current workstation.

This senerio had been working fine for me in my former place of work, =
the only difference is that both NICs from the Proxy server PC are not =
connected to the Switch, one is connectec directly to the gateway and =
the other to the LAN.

I believe I am missing something out somewhere, the multi-million dollar =
question is 'What is that?.

Thanks in advance.

VoIP Installation and Configuration

Hi Guys

I intend installing a voice over IP gateway and I have with me here the =
following software:

1. Gateway

3. Gatekeeper
4. SQL Server

All from Innomedia.

Question.
1. Do I need any other vital software to complete the installation?
2. Can I install all the Software Packages in one Computer System or it =
will be
better otherwise? If otherwise, then which one(s) will go into one =
Computer=20
system and which will go into the others?
3. Other useful information / Documentation will be well appreciated.

I lost the manual that came with the software and that is why I am doing =
this.

Re: Colt Exams??

2000-12-08 Thread Tom Keough, MCSE, CCNA

Niraj,
I am studying for the BSCN and using the Colt Exams as well. I find there
are many errors in the scoring and in the questions themselves. I have been
looking up the answers in the book. To me the benefit is to see the range
of topics and detail Cisco is showing us. Perhaps a glimpse into the actual
test.

I find that in looking up the answers I am learning more than I would if the
system worked as it should.

A question for the group...
I purchased the Boson tests for the BSCN and in these tests there are many
"fill in the blank" questions where you must type in commands. Is this the
format on the actual test or are the answers there to choose from? It is
much more time consuming to study for a "recall" test than for a
"recognition" test. There are no "fill in the blank" questions in the Colt
Exams.

RE: why tokenring?

2000-10-13 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

If anything, it has a lot to do with the fact that SNA is VERY
time-critical.. it doesn't care how FAST a link is, but rather that it
recieves its packets in a relatively predictable time period.. it doesn't
like it to take 15ms for the first packet.. 33ms for the second.. 12ms for
the third.. and 24ms for the fifth. Fluctuation an delay is DEADLY in an
SNA environment. Since there is a set size of a ring, and a packet has to
travel the ring regardless of whether there is a payload or not, delay
fluctuates a lot less in a Token Ring environment.

This is atleast my understanding between the logic behind using TR. If I am
totally off base, feel free to correct me.

I am just curious as to why SNA still runs on tokenring today. Is there any
reason that it cannot just hook right into an ethernet network?? I have
read a few white papers on SNA, and I assume that because tokenring was the
major LAN media back in the day, and because SNA uses RIF's to determine
paths to other hosts, that SNA was built requiring the use of RIF's. Is
this correct??

RE: WHIZZ KIDS WHO HAVE THE CCIE number

2000-10-13 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

Though I can't comment on being certified at 12 or 13.. when I took my
certification courses over the last year of my life, there were guys in the
class who were 17 when we started, 18 when we finished.. we couldn't even
all go for a beer after class, but that was cool. I considered doing my
Cisco certs right after high school, back in 1997.

I did 2 of my MCP classes while in grade 12.. Windows 95, and Windows NT
Workstation. Quite honestly, I've been a big computer geek since I was 11
or 12. I was rejected by society for different reasons at a young age,
unpopular even in Kindergarten, and found peace in the digital world at age
10 or 11. Every kid has a hobby.. at 12 mine was hockey cards and
computers. The computers stuck with me.

Now I'm 21, and still spend an amount of time on computers per day that most
would consider unhealthy.. but it interests me, and to be honest, I love my
job. Now, if only we could get rid of the suits and ties at my company...
;P This morning, I sat a 3 1/2 hour meeting with 10 reps from Nortel, going
over the features of the Nortel Business Call Manager -- my company is
trying to teach me about telecommunications, and I'm helping train the
telecom guys on the data stuff, as BCM is a box that speaks OSPF, RIP, IP,
H.323, and interfaces other stuff for VoIP, and gateways to the PSTN for
failover, and PBXs.

What the generation that follows me is going to learn, and what the 12 and
13 year olds are even already doing, just boggles my mind.. I ran a BBS at
13.. these kids are running webpages with hits from worldwide, and designing
spectacular graphics.. or the other kids who are running little mini-LANs at
home. I am moving into my cousin's basement suite, and have no doubt that
my 13-year old cousin is going to pick up on my Cisco stuff no problem. So
what? He also has a girlfriend, skateboards, plays hockey, and has tons of
friends.

RE: books for ccda

2000-10-03 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

This is really a question for the Associates list, but I'll answer it here,
as I am not sure if you are signed up for the Associates list.
I have been preparing for this exam, but am yet to actually sit the test. I
have used both DCN, and Priscilla Oppenheimer's Top-Down Network Design. I
have found both to be excellent sources of information, and plan to keep
both on my bookshelf as bible-like references in the future. Also, I seem
to remember Priscilla having flash cards on her site for prep for the CCDA
exam (http://www.priscilla.com).

Both very good books, I found Priscilla's writing style more bearable to
read as a human trying to read it cover-to-cover. I found DCN to be a good
insomnia-breaker, and reference guide for the concepts which I had a hard
time grasping from Top-Down (not often, due to Priscilla's excellent
explanations). I HAVE read both cover-to-cover.. and highly suggest taking
the time to work through the case studies in the DCN book.. as I have heard
there are a lot of scenario / case studie questions on the exam. I can not
verify this personally, as I have not sat that one.

For the DCN book, I have found pdf copies of it floating around on the net.
I am not sure about the legality of this, but do a search on Cisco's website
for it.. I believe it is usually called dcn.pdf -- I found this file a few
days after my return period at Chapters expired.. so I was out the $90CDN it
cost me.. OUCH. But well worth the money, if you prefer bound media.

RE: Could someone help me !

2000-09-30 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

There is a few things going on here. Everyone that has replied that I have
seen so far, has missed a major thing. Source Port, and Destination Port
swap for the return packet.

Scenario #1, You want to browse a webpage.

Your PC: 10.192.168.1
Web Server: 10.0.0.2

Your PC sends out a packet, this packet will look partially similiar to this
layout:

Source Address (Where it came from) : 10.192.168.1
  Source TCP Port (Random number > 1023) : 31000
Destination Address (Where it is going) : 10.0.0.2
  Destination Port (Well-known service port) : 80

When this packet comes to the webserver, it looks.. "My IP Address? Yes.
Port number? tcp/80. Do I know what that port is? Yes, pass it to Apache."
Apache then looks, "Source 10.192.168.1, new session. Source port 31000."
It adds : 10.192.168.1,31000 to a table of active connections, and preps a
packet with the information requested. It will look like this:

Source Address (Where it came from) : 10.0.0.2
  Source TCP Port (Random number > 1023) : 80
Destination Address (Where it is going) : 10.192.168.1
  Destination Port (Well-known service port) : 31000

The packet is then sent through the network to your PC. Your PC looks at
the packet, "For my IP? Yes. What port? tcp/31000. Do I know what that port
is? Yes, I just sent a request in Netscape window #2 on that port to the
source address of this packet." Pass it to Netscape, which opens the file.

This process continues, allow with TCP ACK packets, since this is a tcp
session, until that file is loaded. This is also done in several threads at
once, to load your webpage faster.

If this still confuses you, draw a picture on a big piece of paper.. two
computers.. several arrows going left and right, and write it out visually.

Just try to remember that for the scenario listed, your PC always uses
tcp/31000 (only in this scenario, it is a random number between
1024-65536).. the webserver always uses tcp/80. Whether these numbers are
"Source" or "Destination", depends on the direction of the arrow.

1 More attempt.. if the first didn't work.
Think of it like an airplane flight, round trip. You have a source airport,
and a destination airport. On the way home, they are swapped.

Vancouver to Toronto:
To Toronto, your ticket (packet) is like this:
Source Airport (where I'm leaving) : YVR (just like an IP, it is unique)
Source gate : Domestic, A30
Destination Airport (Where I'm going) : YYZ
Destination gate : Domestic, I43

On the way home, for the sake of this example, your flight happens to use
the same gates (since they do in a tcp session). This is a round trip
ticket, so I'm not leaving from Vancouver, I'm going to Vancouver.

Source Airport (where I'm leaving) : YYZ (just like an IP, it is unique)
Source gate : Domestic, I43
Destination Airport (Where I'm going) : YVR
Destination gate : Domestic, A30

Just an analogy to see if it helps.. some people get it, some don't. That's
the way I thought of it at first, and now it's just second nature.

on a www, http segment) of 80, would be on the server from which we will
download the data right? and we would specify a port (called source
port) to which we want the data to come into our machine right?
but then how would the www server distinguish between many sessions if
their port is always port 80??

another example... suppose a college closes a "napster" port... can't you
just log onto the napster server using a different port from your
college? hmm.. i really confused.

could you somehow help me visualize where these ports are in the
network. and who sets them and how destination servers and clients differ
etc..

thanks,

RE: Napster Question

2000-09-29 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

The list went through this several times already.

Blocking ports , , , is useless.. since Beta6, Napster has
been able to work on ANY port, INCLUDING 80.. so to kill Napster, you would
have to kill all access to http/tcp80.. NOT good. Blocking the IPs is the
best and most thorough solution at this time.

Also, besides blocking the access to the main Napster sites will block most
users, and for those that go around it, there should be a user policy in
place. It is not totally your job to govern what the users do and do not
do.. the users should also be held responsible. Put a political policy in
place, and if it is broken by a user by using something such as opennap,
discipline from management will solve this issue.

Blocking these IP addresses will only block users from accessing the main
napster servers and will not block access to other napster servers, such as,
opennap, which can be found easily by using the napigator program. The best
way to block Napster is to block the ports that the client uses which are
,,,. Don't quote me on these ports because I can't find my
documentation at the moment, but I think they are right.

RE: CCDA summerization question

2000-09-28 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

This is possibly one of those situations with just a poorly worded question.
Now, to nit-pick at the wording.. "The following IP *ADDRESSES*" --
Addresses, not networks, but ADDRESSES..

Now, is this VLSM summarization, in which case "no bits in the 3rd octet"
without doing 2 summaries (50% savings on the routing table traffic, but why
when you could 172.16/16 for 75% savings).

The other possibility, is (I do this occassionally on firewall rules setups)
summarizing for an access list. In other words, "What is an IP/mask
combination that will match those 4 addresses." The answer would be :
172.16.0.0   = 172.16..0
172.16.64.0  = 172.16.0100.0
172.16.128.0 = 172.16.1000.0
172.16.192.0 = 172.16.1100.0

Remember that the mask in an access-list etc, does NOT need to be contiguous
bits.. therefor :
172.16.0.0 0.0.192.255 (172.16.xx00.x) works fine for those specific
addresses (and added feature, doesn't include anything else). Just another
point of view to look at this question from.

Remember that while writing a Cisco exam, or out in the real world, ASSUME
NOTHING. If it does not mention VLSM, don't assume they are talking about
VLSM. If possible, check on what the exam says is the "correct" answer, and
try to reverse-engineer their thinking to see what topic they are covering.
Also, check the erratta for the exam to make sure you are looking at a
"correct" answer.

RE: TTY Lines

2000-09-28 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

Simplest way to do this would be the following (note this isn't tested, but
it should work:

Since not setting a password for telnet disables telnet, simply try the
following:

> en
# conf t
(conf)# line 0 4
(conf-line)# no password
(conf-line)# end
#

So theoretically, to only allow 1 tty line,

> en
# conf t
(conf)# line 0 0
(conf-line)# password abcdefg
(conf-line)# line 1 4
(conf-line)# no password
(conf-line)# end
#

Like I said, this is untested, but should work fine (in theory). If anyone
has time to test this out in a lab environment, let me know if anything
works properly, or incorrectly.

RE: they want us in England!!

2000-09-21 Thread Trevor Corness, CCNA

Congratulations, Sam!

I myself landed my first real networking job yesterday. I had IBM Canada
and BMS Communications fighting over me for 24 hours. IBM took a month to
get back to me, I interviewed with BMS Monday and Tuesday.. Tuesday
afternoon I had the offer (2 hours after IBM called, but I purposely took my
24hrs to choose). 6 months, and 7 companies interviewed later, I'm a
Network Systems Engineer.. a fancy title for a guy that goes on-site for NT,
Cisco, Nortel, Unix support, and does some network design along with
presentations with our sales team. I start October 2nd.

England is a place I would like to go later in my career, possibly 5 years
from now, but I'm just kind of starting out here. My family is from back
there, and I've always wanted to go see all of England, Ireland, and
Scotland.. along with the rest of Europe of course, only seen Barcelona,
Spain up until now.

Best of luck in the new job, and drop by from time to time to check on us.

Interconnections, Second edition (ISBN 0201634481) came out a few months ago,
and is even better than the first edition. Radia's humorous writing style makes
the topic easy to understand. I buy a copy for each of my new staff to help
them understand what's really going on in a complicated network.

My autographed copy is proudly sitting next to my routers in my lab.
