Re: Anyone used SwitchSim?

2001-02-20 Thread Niraj Palikhey

I don't see it listed on Todd Lammle's site. Where can I buy this?
Anyone done with their's and interested in selling...for a reasonable price,
ofcourse?
This product might truly be a help in passing the switching exam for ccnp and also
practise for ccie lab.

Colt Exams??

2000-12-08 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Does anyone know of a way of finding the right answers to the Colt Exams?-
Besides digging up the answers in the book :-)
I am preparing for the CIT exam and the questions in the Colt Exam for this is
really tough in the way that they are constructed. I found most of the answers in the
Cisco Press book for CIT. But there are so many questions that I could not answer or
find the right answer.
Can anyone provide any clues? Does Cisco have another link with the right
answers?
Thank you.

Intermittent ISDN connections

2000-10-02 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Need help in trying to trouble-shoot an isdn pri E1 connection problem b/w 2
3640 routers using DDR b/w our two sites, one in Paris and one in Morocco.
The call connection drops after about a minute. I can do an extended ping to
the Morocco router from Paris. It works initially, but the link drops after
a couple of pings.
Does the dialer hold-queue have to be the same values on both routers to
keep the link up? I have 2 different values now, one at 75 and the other at
100.
I also have the dialer load-threshold 10 either command both routers. Should
this values be higher?
Also the hold-queue for the s0/0:15 interface is set for 75 on one router
and 150 in and 150 out on the other router. Should both these values be the
same?
Is there any special tweaking that needs to be done because these channels
are used for voice traffic?

Any help is gratefully appreciated.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Niraj

Re: Intermittent ISDN connections

2000-10-03 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Yes, the access list specifies ip any any
dialer idle-timeout is set to 360 on both routers.
When we do an extended ping and tell it to ping 2000 times, it pings
initially, then stops and then pings once again. During the stop period, we
cannot type any commands on the router. It just freezes. Then once ping
works again, we are able to work on the router

Re: COLT tests

2000-10-18 Thread Niraj Palikhey

How would I take the Colt tests? Are these the same practise tests on the
Cisco web site that is for registered CCO users? I forget the url but does
anyone know the url? I would appreciate it.
Thank you.

WFQ on X.25, LAPB etc. .....

2000-10-18 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Could somebody explain why WFQ is not an option when using X.25, LAPB,
compressed PPP and SDLC? The Cisco BCRAN book mentions FIFO as the default
queuing method for the above but not an explanation as to why.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Niraj

Cannot ping own serial int. in a FR lab env??

2001-03-26 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I have setup 3 2501 routers for FR and cannot figure out why I am NOT able
to ping my own serial int.(10.1.1.1) but can ping the other router(10.1.1.2) through
the frame relay switch. I face the same problem from the other side too. I setup
additional 3 router configs. to verify this and I have the same problem. Is this only
in a lab environment or am I missing something? Please advise. Thank you.

Line prot. down with ppp auth pap command?

2001-03-26 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I have setup 2 routers with a back-to-back cable. When I setup the serial int.
with ppp encap. I can ping the other router and vice-versa. But when I setup the
username and password and add the command #ppp auth pap, the line prot. goes down. I
setup #debug ppp nego and one of the debug output reads, "Closing connection
as remote router cannot authenticate". I made sure that the hostnames were setup
correctly and the passwords were the same(cisco). What could be the possible
reason why the serial int. shows line prot down(sh ip int brie). Please
advise.

Token Ring interfaces in a UP/UP state?

2001-03-26 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Is it possible to setup a Token Ring interface (2502 router), in a UP/UP state
WITHOUT connecting it to a MAU, similiar to setting up an Ethernet int. with the #no
keep command?? I gave a #no keep and #ring-speed 16 commands but this does not
work? Is there any other way? Please advise. Thank you.

Thanks, I'll try that and let you know

On a sidenote, when I can successfully ping the other side, is it the frame
relay switch that's helping to resolve the ip to the dlci configured on the
switch with the #frame-relay route command?

2514 Upgrade Problem!!

2001-03-26 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
When I was upgrading the IOS on a 2514 router via tftp, the connection was
lost while the router was trying to download the new ios from the tftp
server(after having erased the existing ios!!). The router retried a couple
of times and I was finally forced to reboot the router. The routers now
boots to the mini-ios(gives me the Router(boot)> prompt. What can I do to

Re: 2514 Upgrade Problem!!

2001-03-27 Thread Niraj Palikhey

That's exactly the command that I forgot to type on the router prior to the
upgrade. I have a X-over cable b/w the router and the tftp server(95
laptop).
NO, I cannot ping the tftp at the Router(boot)> prompt Nor can I ping the
router from the tftp. Any ideas?
Can I setup the #ip default-gateway command at the
Router(boot)> prompt(once I am able to ping-if that's possible?)
I am also doing a search on CCO but am not having much luck.
Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

RE: 2514 Upgrade Problem!!

2001-03-27 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Jason,
I would love to do the xmodem(after having done on a couple of 36 and 2600
series) but my problem is that I have never been able to upgrade the ios on
a 2500 via the xmodem. Everytime I do that, the first thing it does is give
me a > prompt and when I type the xmodem command, gives me a what? response.
I do NOT get this on the 36 or 2600 routers. I have tried to get this info.
on CCO without any luck.

Does ANYBODY know how to upgrade the ios on a 2500 via xmodem?
Has ANYBODY done this successfully.

Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

All,
Thanks for your help. I finally upgraded to the new ios. I had forgotten to
give the ip default-gateway command, disable the other
interfaces(recommended by Cisco) and from the Router(boot)> mode, I was able
to download the new ios.

RE: Line prot. down with ppp auth pap command?

2001-03-27 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Khalil,
Thank you and all the others for providing help on this. The command ppp pap
sent-username is the one that worked. Thanks a million to you. I am
puzzled-I was following instructions from books(won't mention which) and
none of them had this command!! Here is what I found out...very interesting.
2 routers, RouterA and RouterB connected back to back.
RouterA 1.1.1.1 DCE
username RouterB password cisco
encap ppp
ppp auth pap
ppp pap sent-username RouterA password cisco

RouterB 1.1.1.2 DTE
username RouterA password cisco
encap ppp
ppp auth pap
ppp pap sent-username RouterB password cisco

This command is reqd. on BOTH routers. If this command if entered on only 1
router, the serial on the other starts flapping!!! strange!!
If NOT entered, the BOTH serial report line prot. down!! strange!!

But if configured with chap, ppp chap sent-username.is NOT reqd. It
works fine!! strange!!

My only explanation could possibly be is that since pap sends the password
to the other side, the other side needs to know who is coming in with what
password and compares this to the local username and password. I wonder what
would happen if I did not have the local username and password set??

Would anyone be kind enough to explain why this configuration is such??
Thank you.
Kind regards,

1912 switch with a DB-9 port for console??

2001-04-02 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I just bought a 1912 switch(looks like an older model) that has a db-9 port
for the console connection. Do I just use a regular console cable and a db-9
adapter to console in? How about the pinouts on the adapter itself? Does it
follow the same pin configuration that is used for the router? Please
advise.
Thank you.

2001-04-03 Thread Niraj Palikhey

OK, I plugged in a null modem cable and now what? I hate to ask anyone
solutions to my problems the easy way out but I apologize for this. Would I
be able to get the info. on CCO? I was not sure how the null modem cable
could get me into the switch using Hyperterm. It does not. I have used a
null modem to get into a 3com switch with 3c0m's web-based software. So I am
thinking that Cisco would also have a similiar kind of software on CCO?
Please advise.

Cannot ping switch in a inter-vlan setup??

2001-04-03 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I have setup a 1912 switch with 8 vlans. I have 8 pc's with 8 different ip's
plugged into the switch along with a 2620. I have an ip of 10.1.1.2 to the
switch and a default-gateway of 10.1.1.1. I can ping any computer in any
vlan through the 2620 but one strange thing is that I cannot ping the switch
from any pc or the router itself no can I ping the switch's ip on the switch
itself or the default gateway. The first pc's ip=10.1.1.10 with a gwy of
10.1.1.1 on f0/0.10 on the router. I thought that atleast this pc would be
able to ping the switch since they are in the same network but this is not
the case. What am I doing wrong?
Please advise.
Thank you.

RE: Cannot ping switch in a inter-vlan setup??

2001-04-03 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Don,
That is exactly what I have done. I have no problem pinging computers in the
other subnets. The switch is 10.1.1.2, the router f0/0.10 is 10.1.1.1, a pc
on e0/1 is 10.1.1.10. My problem is why can I NOT ping the switch from the
pc or the router and also ping from the switch back to the router or the pc.
All other pc's happily ping their default gateways and to each other. Please
advise.

Re: 1912 switch with a DB-9 port for console??

Allright, I finally got into the switch and reset it to factory defaults.
But I do not see an option for K-command line. I tried to upload the
enterprise ver. of the ios via the console using xmodem but immediately I
get a msg. saying cancelled by remote host. I have tried it 5 times with no
luck. I did not have any problem when I upgrading the newer 1912 switch
using xmodem via the console. Any ideas?
Thank you.

In the meanwhile, I'll keep trying too :-)

Re: Cannot ping switch in a inter-vlan setup??

2001-04-04 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Luke,
Here is the config:
1912: #ip addr 10.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
  #ip default-gateway 10.1.1.1

2620: #int f0/0
  #no ip addr
  #exit
  #int f0/0.10
  #encap isl 10
  #ip addr 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
  #shut
  #no shut
  #int f0/0.20
  #encap isl 20
  #ip addr 20.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
  #shut
  #no shut
  #end
  And so on for 30.1.1.1, 40.1.1.1...till 80.1.1.1
1st pc ip=10.1.1.10, 255.255.255.0, 10.1.1.1
2nd pc ip=20.1.1.10, 255.255.255.0, 20.1.1.1
And so on till 80.1.1.10, 255.255.255.0, 80.1.1.1

All the pc's are plugged into the 1912. The router is plugged into f0/26.

All pc's can ping one another and the router and ditto from the router back
to each pc. Same for telnet from a pc to the router. NO problem.

*** But CANNOT ping the switch from the pc or the router no can ping the
swich ip on the switch itself or the router or any pc *** This is the
problem.

Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

Re: Cannot ping switch in a inter-vlan setup??

2001-04-04 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi John,
How do I specify on what vlan interface should the switch ip be? I assumed
that it was vlan1 by default. But looks like I understand the problem now.
The switch by default is in vlan1 and I have specified vlan10 as 10.1.1.1
which is the default-gateway for the switch. Obviously, this is not going to
work. Looks like I have to define a new subif (f0/0.1), encap isl 1, ip addr
10.1.1.1, shut, no shut and then make the pc(10.1.1.10)part of vlan 10. I
think this would do it, right?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Re: FW: 1912 switch with a DB-9 port for console??

2001-04-05 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Nick,
Thank you very much for the information. I downloaded the ios for firmare
5.35 and uploaded it to the switch. When it reboots, I still don't see an
option for the command line, K that I see in the other 1912. Does this older
model of the 1912 even have such an option?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Reverse Telnet on a 3640 NOT working!!

2001-04-07 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am trying to setup a 3640 router with 3 async interfaces for reverse
telnet but it's not working.
On the 3640, I consoled in and created 8 loopback interfaces 1-8 with ip's
starting at 1.1.1.1..8.8.8.8. I have ip host R1 2001 1.1.1.1 thru ip
host R8 2008 8.8.8.8 configured.
I also have under line 33 48
#transport input all
#flowcontrol hardware

Presently, I only have 2 other routers connected to the 3640. When I type R1
on the 3640, I get a connection refused error msg. Same for R2.
I unplugged the octal connector and connected it to the second port on the
1st async interface. Same problem
I configured the other lines and plugged the octal connector to those ports.
Same problem.
Is there something that I am missing or doing wrong.
One thing that I am trying to understand is that Do I have to actually
Telnet to the 3640 and then do a reverse telnet instead of consoling into it
and trying to get to the other router's console??
Please advise.
Thank you,
Kind regards,

IGRP on the 800 Series? [7:1365]

2001-04-20 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Can anyone tell me why the 800 series routers do NOT run igrp? I would think
that besides the 700 series, all Cisco routers that run the Cisco ios should
be capable of running igrp? After all, since igrp is Cisco's very own
protocol, shouldn't Cisco give credit to Len Bosack on the 800 series too
:-)
Please advise.
Thank you.

Re: Passed CCIE Written but NOT doing lab [7:3568]

2001-05-08 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hello Steve,

Personally,it's not about what the world thinks, it's what YOU think.
Attempting the lab and passing or failing it :-( for ME is not about
whether there are so many IE's out there or a $150K job or no job or Juniper
lurking in the horizon, it's about one's own achievment and self-worth. Like
you, I too started pulling cables through ceilings, bled my fingers
(literally) by opening up x86's and some of those never heard brand-names,
the Novell sh**, the Microsoft sh**, A+, N+, Citrix, xxNA, xxNP etc. etc.
etcyou know the list goes on and on. It's about the challenge that the
lab offers and the fun? of fixing those godam*** problems that excites me.
OK, I am not trying sound like a pr*** here.

I personally think now after all these years, all these other certs are
nothing when compared to the CCIE because they are written, something you
can memorize and pass, which is what most of us have done. But the LAB, it's
whether you know it or you don't? As we say at work..it's all in your 10
fingers!!

NO one in my parent company is certified, NO one, NADA - the Cisco guru,
Unix guru, Oracle guru, NT guru etc.etc. and whenever I fall into problems,
guess who helps me out?
And I always use them as my Prime Example in my classes when I am trying to
teach someone who does not know the difference b/w a router, switch or hub?
God help me!!!

Attempting and passing the LAB is like climbing up Mt. Everest which is in
my home country, Nepal. It's not whether Hillary or Tenzing Norgay who
climbed it first and the many others after them, it's YOU who had done it
now. YOU.
Ok, stop being poetic here :-)

So I suggest GO FOR IT MAN!! or as you guys say there, CHAP :-)
Best of Luck!!

Just my 2 cents!
Peace!!
Kind regards,
Niraj

1602 as a Frame swictch? [7:4491]

2001-05-14 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Is it possible to configure a 1602 as a frame-relay swich like a 2501? If a
1602 has 2 56kbps wic cards, can you connect another 2 1602's to this and
setup frame relay?
I see that the 1602 takes the frame-relay switching command and also encap
frame-relay, frame-relay lmi-type.. commands. How do I specify the
frame-relay intf-type dce and the frame-relay route 100 serial 1 101...
commands?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Re: 1600's - Using to make a Frame Switch [7:4643]

2001-05-15 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Gary,
Actually, I had the same question but got no reply from anyone. So far, I
have been using a 2501 as a frame relay switch. I would like to use the 1600
but it just does not take the frame-relay route and the frame-relay
intf-type dce commands. I tried the cisco web-site but no luck. Actually,
here is my question that I posted yesterday:

Is it possible to configure a 1602 as a frame-relay swich like a 2501? If a
1602 has 2 56kbps wic cards, can you connect another 2 1602's to this and

command and also encap frame-relay, frame-relay lmi-type.. commands. How do
I specify the frame-relay intf-type dce and the frame-relay route 100 serial
1 101...commands?

Please let me know if you get any replies. Thank you.

Re: 1600's - Using to make a Frame Switch [7:4643]

2001-05-16 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Phil,
It's you to the rescue again. :-)
But unfortunately, it will not let me type the frame-relay intf-type dce and
the frame-relay route 100. commands. Is there something that I have to
do on the 1602 for this?(Since it has a 56kbps wic with a built-in csu/dsu).
I scoured the CCO with no luck.
I am wondering there should be a way because it DOES let me type the
frame-relay switching global config command?
Thanks,
Niraj

Re: 1600's - Using to make a Frame Switch [7:4643]

2001-05-17 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Well, after spending some time once again on CCO, this time using TAC's
help, I finally figured out how to configure a 1602 router as a frame-relay
switch and connect another router to it. It's actally very simple with one
side R-1 providing the clock(56000) and the other side R-2 configured with
the frame-relay switching command. Both routers are configured with s0.1
point-to-point subif and an ip address, a common dlci specified for both and
only on R-2 the frame-relay intf-type dce command configured. It works!!
Now the next step is to install another 56kbps wic on one and configure it
to route frame packets b/w 2 dlci's. It should be the same as for the 2501,
I figure.
Also figured out that the frame-relay intf-type and the frame-relay route
commands can actually be configured on the routers.
Thanks, Phil once again for your help.
Kind regards,
Niraj

I guess this helps the other gentleman who needed to know this.

Help on a CAT 5 switch? [7:4952]

2001-05-17 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am looking to invest in a Cat 5 switch for the CCIE Lab but don't know
what kind of config/modules are used in the Lab. I am checking on Ebay and
see some of the following descriptions with prices ranging anywhere from
1200-2600$$$:
Cisco Catalyst WS-C5000
(2) Cisco Catalyst WS-C5008A AC Power Supplies
(1) Cisco Catalyst WS-X5509 Supervisor 2
(1) Cisco Catalyst WS-X5225R 24 Port ISL 10/100 Blade

WS-X5009 Supervisor Engine with Dual FastEthernet Uplink Ports
(1) WS-X5213 Fast Ethernet Switching Module (12 Port)
(1) DC Power Supply

Cisco Catalyst 5000 Chassis with Dual AC power
WS-X5009 Supervisor I with 2 port 10/100 Ethernet ports
WS-X5213 12 Port 10/100 Ethernet Ports
WS-X5010 24 Port 10 MB Ethernet

What should I be looking to buy as an ABSOLUTE minimum so I can prepare for
the Lab? And at what reasonable price?
Any advise or help is gratefully appreciated.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Niraj Palikhey

RE: 1600's - Using to make a Frame Switch [7:4643]

2001-05-18 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi Chris,
What I am about to do is to add a T-1 wic to the 1600 and see if I can make
a frame switch and connect it to another 1602 and a 2610. The config that I
used if from the TAC website(- my own ip's) and it is only b/w the 2 1602
routers, which is different than configuring it on a 2501 switch which is
b/w 3 routers.
I'll let you know how that goes.
But here is the config for the 2 1602's:

Router 1:
#conf t
#int s0
#no ip address
#encap frame-relay
#clock rate 64000
#no keepalive
#exit
#int s0.1 point-to-point
#ip addr 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
#frame-relay interface-dlci 100 broadcast

*** I have the clock source internal configured on this guy ***

Router 2:
#conf t
#frame-relay switching
# int s0
#no ip address
#encap frame-relay
#no keepalive
#frame-relay intf-type dce
#exit
#int s0.1 point-to-point
#ip addr 1.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
#frame-relay interface-dlci 100 broadcast

*** I have the clock source line configured on this guy ***

Both routers have the 56kbps wic card connected via a console cable.

The only command that does not work is the sh frame lmi (obviously becoz' of
the no keep command)

All the other commands viz. sh frame pvc, sh frame map etc work.
Good luck.
Kind regards,
Niraj

ATM switch for the CCIE Lab [7:6011]

2001-05-25 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
If I were to get an ATM switch for the lab, which one should I be getting at
a minimum so as to practise atm? I see a cisco LS100 model but I have heard
references about a 1010 model. Would someone advise me as to what should I
be getting?
Thank you.

no ip directed-broadcast?

2000-07-13 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am trying to figure out 2 things on interfaces:
When I configure a serial or Ethernet interfaces, there is a default setting
that says no ip directed-broadcast or no ip mroute-cache?
I have looked up books for this explanation but cannot find any. What is
this default setting? What does this do? If I enable it, what are the
effects.?
Please advise.
Thank you.

ipx on a 804 router?

2000-07-13 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I have a 804 router that I tftp'ed an ip/ipx ios to flash. When I do a sh
flash, I see a TinyRom, the ip ios and the new ip/ipx ios. But when I do a
sh ver, it shows the older ip ios. I cannot configure ipx routing on this
router or igrp? The config register is set to 0x2102. Is this the setting
that I need to change for the new ios to take effect? What would it be?

Aside from this, Is there a book that explains basic things like this? I
have read many Cisco CCNA books but none of them focus on basic things like
this which I feel is so important to know. All the books talk is about
passing the exam, that's all.

Please advise.
Thank you.

no ip address for frame-relay switch?

2000-07-14 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am trying to understand as to why an ip address is not assigned to the
serial interfaces of a router that is configured as a frame relay switch. Is
this only for a lab environment or is this how it is also done in the real
world?
Also each interface is assigned as a dce interface. Why does the router need
this to support switching?
Can someone help?
Thank you.

ip unnumbered??

2000-07-19 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am trying to understand why a serial connection (s0) is not assigned an ip
address to connect with the service provider when configured for frame
relay.
As a configuration example that one of my friends showed me, his serial 0 is
configured for T1, with no ip address, serial 0.2 is configured for frame
relay as a point-to-point subinterface. There is an ip unnumbered
Ethernet0/0 command for this interface and also the frame relay
configuration is set (dlci #, lmi type etc)
What does this ip unnumbered do in this case?
Pg. 417 and 418 of the ICRC book from Cisco Press for CCNA 640-407 does not
explain why the physical interface serial 2 and sub-interface serial 2.2
point-to-point is not configured with any ip address NOR does it explain the
use of the ip unnumbered Serial1(in this case).
In this scenario, how does this router talk to the service provider's
router?
Does it just look at the DLCI number and use the virtual circuit for
communication to the outside? What is involved?
Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

Hi,
I am trying to find some information regarding the exam that you have passed
but am having no luck.
Would you please list the url's that you have mentioned below and also where
can I buy the Cisco training books for this exam?
Another question is: Do I have to pass the CCNP first and then take the
voice exam - I mean is this an additional exam after passing the CCNP?
Please advise.
Thank you.

2620 keeps rebooting on and on and ....!!!

2000-07-21 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am trying to figure out what's wrong with a 2620 router that keeps
rebooting on and on and on...Initially, I did the Ctrl-Break on startup, got
into the router, configured the startup-config file and set the
config-register to 0x2102. Everything went fine and it was working. Today
when I turned the router on, the same problem. Now I am having problems even
getting the Ctrl-Break key to work.
Any ideas??
Please advise.

64 VLAN's in Catalyst 1900 switches??

2000-07-26 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am trying to understand how a Catalyst 1912 or a 1924 can support 64
VLAN's. If each port in a switch is configured for only 1 VLAN, then the
maximum number of VLAN's should be determined by the number of ports,
right??
Also, how does a Catalyst 5500 switch support 1005 VLAN's? Does it have
10005 ports at the back of the switch?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Cisco Catalyst 5500 switch??

2000-07-26 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
If you have users on 3 floors of a bldg. and you had a Catalyst 5500 switch,
do all the cables from all 3 floor terminate into one central patch panel
and then to the switch?
Presently, we use 3 com 1100/3300 switches, and we have 3 floors. All the
switches in these 3 floors are connected via fiber links while the switches
themselves are connected by stright-through cables on each floors.
If I would like to introduce a Catalyst 5500 switch and create VLAN's, don't
all the cables from the jacks on each floor have to be directly connected to
the big switch -as each MAC address is mapped to each port that is mapped to
one VLAN??
How would this be done?
Please advise.
Thank you.

64 VLAN's on a Cat 1912 switch?

Hi,
I am trying to understand whether the Catalyst 1912 switch supports upto 64
VLAN's(meaning connected to other vlan's) or you can create upto 64 VLAN's
on this switch. It has only 12 ports. If 1 port can only belong to 1 vlan at
one time and each port is mapped to 1 mac address, then how come I can
create upto 64 vlan's on this switch.
Please advise.

Removing NAT??

2000-07-31 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I have enable dynamic nat on a 2501 and cannot take it out. It gives me an
error msg. "Pool Internet in use;Cannot redefine". "Dynamic mapping in use.
Cannot remove"

Basically, instead of specifying a legal range of addresses for the pool, I
specified the internet addresses 10.11.10.2 through 10.11.10.20.

I also have access list 1 specified for 10.11.10.0 0.0.0.255.
I have for E0 - ip nat inside and for S0 - ip nat outside

What do I do first to modify the ip nat pool Internet line to include the
legal range?

I first removed the access-list and then the nat for both s0 and e0? I still
get the error msg. I did a no ip nat and still get the error msg.?

Please advise
Thank you.

Route maps???

2000-08-01 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I am trying to understand route maps. I see it mentioned in the NAT and OSPF
papers that I downloaded from Cisco's web site but they are not very clear
about it. I looked up the EIGRP book but no there is no mention about it.
Same for the ACRC books by Lammle or Cisco Press. Where can I find info. on
it so I can learn how to implement route maps? Is there any information on
the CCO Login site?
Thank you.

Voice over ATM??

2000-08-08 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Could somebody advise me the value of working in a voice over atm
environment?

I am on my way to achive the CCIE certification(well, that's my ultimate
certification goal). Presently, I am working towards my CCNP and have learnt
a lot about Cisco routers and routing in general.

I have an opportunity to work in a voice over atm environment. This is
dealing with Nortel GSP switches connected to Passport switches which is
connected to Lucent CBX 500 ATM switches. Will be part of the team that will
build this ATM core backbone. They also have plans to route data(ip) over
this ATM backbone possibly in the future.

Since I will not really be dealing with Cisco routers but more so with those
ATM switches and voice switches etc. is it worth it to work in this kind of
environment, keeping in mind the CCIE certification?

The pay is ok and I do understand any kind of ATM knowledge is good, but I
have yet to pass my CCNP and work with routers in a larger scale and
understand them better??

Would someone give me an honest advise?

Thank you.

Configuring a 3640 T-1 ??

2000-08-17 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
We have a 3640 router that we would like to use instead of a 7505. This 7505
has 2 existing T-1's connected to 2 remote sites. The 3640 has a T-1
controller card with 2 ports. We would like to configure this controller
card with the existing 2 T-1's. Is this possible to begin with??

If so, is configuring the 3640 T-1 card different from configuring the
serial on the 7505?

Would someone please point to a Cisco link that has a configuration example
like this one?
Thank you.

RE: EIGRP contiguous AS

2000-06-06 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
I know that this question of mine is not related to this post but since you
all are talking about EIGRP and seem to know the subject matter, I would
like to ask abou the differencs b/w EIGRP and OSPF? What are the major
differences b/w EIGRP and OSPF aside from the fact that EIGRP is Cisco's
proprietary protocal and OSPF is open?
Why would one use EIGRP over OSPF and vice-versa?
I know that EIGRP uses bandwidth as it's metrics and OSPF uses cost but
which one is a better metric?
Please advise.

Re: Can you block CDP with an access list???

2000-06-28 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
So basically, if I understand, CDP can be used on serial as well as on
Ethernet interfaces to get info. on neighboring routers. One question I had
regarding CDP is when you do a sh cdp neighbors, it gives you config info.
regarding the neighboring routers. I wanted to understand what AGS under
Platform meant in this configuration. What does it stand for?
Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

Basic Config question??

2000-07-05 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Had a question on the output of a sh ver. command on my 2501 router.
The memory reads 2048/2048 bytes of memory. The NVRam has 32K of memory and
the system flash reads 8192K bytes of processor board System flash.

Why does the memory read 2048/2048? Does this mean it had 4MB of total RAM
but what is the significance of the (/)slash?

Since the startup-config file resides in NVRam, and only the startup file is
in NVRam, is it why it has only 32K of memory? Would I ever need to upgrade
this?

Regarding flash, does it have it's own 8Mb of memory? Since this is needed
to load the IOS, will this also ever have to be upgraded depending on the
ver. of IOS being used?

Also the sh ver. command shows Bridging software and X.25 software ver.
3.0.0? What is this software and what does it do?

None of the books that I have read explain basic things like this that I
feel is very important to understand the basics of a router - just like
understanding the internal components of a pc. Most books go straight into
configuring routers etc.

Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

Connecting 3 subnets with Cisco routers??

2000-07-07 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
If you are given a Class C network, eg. 207.96.46.0 and you had to create 3
subnets for 3 floors of your bldg., how would you use routers to connect
these 3 subnets and go out on the Internet? (Without using any internal
addresses ie 10, 172, 192). I know that the mask is going to be
255.255.255.224 with 30 hosts on each subnet. My question is, do you connect
these 3 subnets using the Ethernet interfaces or using the serial? And if
you use either, what would be the ip addressess for the default gateways on
all 3 subnets? How would the hosts on each subnet know how to get to the
other subnet?
Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

2620 Keeps rebooting

2000-07-07 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
My 2620 router just freaked out and it keeps rebooting on and on and on!
(It's not a production router!)There is no way to stop this-similiar to auto
reboot in nt when it crashes. Can someone please advise as to what's going
on? Is there a ctrl-break kind of key to stop this?
Please help.

xmodem command on a 3640?

2000-07-07 Thread Niraj Palikhey

Hi,
Does anyone know on where I can find some reference regarding the use of the
xmodem command? I spent a long time on the Cisco web site, but had no luck.
Nothing came up regarding using the xmodem command to download the IOS to
flash.
I did a xmodem -c c3640-js-mz.113.11a but got an error msg. "timeout waiting
for data download aborted" I just need to know which file do I have to
specify after the -c parameter. I specified the ios file but is this
correct?

I had copied the flash file to the tftp server directory. When I use the
xmodem command, do I have to specify the path to this directory? How does
the router know where this file is located?
Could somebody please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
