Hard/software requirement

2001-01-18 Thread Jason T.

Hi Group, does anyone know what's the minimum hw/sw requirement to set up a
trunk port? I have a cat5500 with Supervisor Engine I running s/w 3.2(1b) &
a 12-port 10/100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet blade running s/w 3.2(1) connecting to
a FastEthernet on a cisco 7204. I cannot get trunking to work. The switch
doesn't understand "show port capabilities". Do I need a Supervisor Engine
II in order to do trunking? Thanks.

Aironet to Cable Modem [7:38212]

2002-03-14 Thread T B

First off I am not familiar with the aironet line!

I have a cable modem (dynamic ip address) connected to a Aironet 350 AP
(AIR-AP352E2C). I am able to get the aironet dynamic ip assigned to the
ethernet interface (from the cable company dhcp servers). I was able to
assign a static ip to the AP radio interface and connect via my wireless nic
(static ip). But, I cannot access the internet via the cable modem.

My guess is that it is more of a switch then a router. I was hopeful it had
a little bit of routing capabilities. I assume that because the ethernet int
and AP radio int are on different subnets that is the reason I can't talk.
But, again I am not sure and hope someone can help me out!!!

I would like any advice to get this working without any other equipment. I
was hoping to do this without using one of my routers! Also, is there any
way to configure it as a DHCP server? And any config advice would be
helpful!!!

Thanks for any advice you may give me !

RE: Aironet to Cable Modem [7:38212]

2002-03-14 Thread T B

Thanks for the Help!

I was hoping that the aironet had some NATing capabilities built into it
that I couldn't find. I guess it would be considered more of smart switch
then anything else.

Thanks!!!

RE: Aironet to Cable Modem [7:38212]

2002-03-14 Thread T B

Sorry, Maybe i didn't explain it right.

I have an Aironet 350 Access Point.

I would like to connect it to my cable modem. Via the ethernet interface and
use the cable company DHCP assigned ip for that side.

I would like to assign some private address (10.0.0.0) to the AP Radio
interface.

I have already done both on the AP.

I would think if I could NAT the private address (AP Radio) to the ethernet
public address it would allow me to access the internet. is there a way to
do the NATing or do I have it wrong.

Thanks for any advice you may give!!!

Study Materials for CCNP 2.0 Track?

understand) in either security or Voice-over-IP...any advice?

Re: Study Materials for CCNP 2.0 Track?

2000-09-06 Thread T. Miller

Agreed. In my experience of self-studying for MS, Novell, and Cisco certs,
I've found each company's official curriculum to be a better source of
information than any third party material I've tried...especially for
overall knowledge and not just getting a passing score on an exam.

You type
copy ?
and what you get is:
copy tftp[:[[//location][/pathname]]] flash[:[image | pdm]]
so you can assume, that copy tftp: flash:pdm will do the job...

and it won't affect the pix configuration, why should it? It's just a
configuration editing software, just like configmaker, only located on the
pix flash for your (in)convenience

MPLS on existing routers [7:43414]

2002-05-06 Thread Michelle T

Folks,

I would like to mess around with MPLS, both Traffic Engineering and MPLS
based VPN's if possible. However, the routers I have may or may not be able
to do any MPLS. I've got some 2509's, a 2600, and some 4000-M's. Does anyone
know what code levels I would need? I can figure out the memory and flash
requirements if I can just figure out what minimum code level to run.

Thanks,

Michelle

What about IDE Flash? Is it possible to use that for a home-built PIX?
Easy to obtain Compact Flash cards and buy adapters to connect to IDE. This
works for a Linux firewall:

Regardless, I would like to get those instructions from you Mike.

RE: CCIE Home Lab Materials and Equipments [7:57810]

2002-11-21 Thread T B
You need more books then those two. Vol 1 is a great book.
The cisco web page is the best place for information.

This is the Web page for the Cisco CD that you are allowed to use in the
lab. (The CD not the web page)
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/home/home.htm

You need to go to "All Product Documentation" then "Cisco IOS Software
Configuration"

You don't need a Catalyst 5000. The lab changed to Catalyst 3550 w/ the EMI
image. Two totally different switches.

Also get more routers, the 2500 series is good enough and cheap on ebay.

Cisco CSS load setting [7:58171]

2002-11-26 Thread sukhesh T
Hi All,

I have a pair of CSS 11150 switched (vrrp configured for redundancy)
configured for load balancing between 2 web application server (Layer 5).The
setup up was working alright and we tested the load balancing and the
request used were going to both servers on round robin.

Now I am facing problem that the request is sent to only one server. When I
see "show load" it shows for one server1 as 2 and server2 as 255 and that
is the reason request is not being sent to server2. The CSS is using all
default configuration related to load treshold and teardown timer etc.

Can anyone tell me how to reset the load value on the CSS..or any other info
on this will be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Sukhdev.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for what you wrote...

I want the BRI just for a back up... so the line should stay down all the
time when every thing is normal. I want the BRI come up only once the serial
go down " in this way we get small bill" :)

how about the routing section ? did you had a look at?

you may have some issues if you are using private address space behind the pix.

Foundation 2.0 (640-509)

2001-01-22 Thread Eric T. Bell

I am considering taking the Foundation 2.0 (640-509) Exam in place of
the Routing, Switching, and Remote Access Exams. It may be harder, but
I see some advantages in it. For example, the foundation exam will
allow me to complete the CCNP in a shorter period of time and better
prepare me to sit for the CCIE written. Also, I would think your strong
areas (ie routing) would help to balance out some of your weaker areas
(ie ISDN or appletalk).

Is my thinking correct? What is your experience with the Foundation 2.0
exam?

Thanks

Re: Verizon BGP

2000-10-09 Thread Jason T. Carnevale

The problem is not that Verizon can not advertise another providers IP space
it is that Venison by policy DOES NOT route other provider's IP space. What is
trying to be accomplished here is that Jin Tam is trying to dual home his site,
which is normal. Verizon requires that a customer get their own IP space from
Arin to do this. Verizon is well aware of the longest match rule, but to route
one ISPs address space to multiple ISPs, (even if it is a more specific route)
is asking for global routing problems, which is why Verizon and other providers
do not allow this. You will also find that large ISPs do not except BGP routes
more specific than /21. I would refer to Internet Routing Architectures for more
information on setting up a dual homed BGP session with your ISP. I also must
state that people that respond to these types of posts should not assume all the
facts are presented by the poster and with that in mind should not assume that
the parties involved are high school idiots. Just my 2 cents.

well it would, except that:
1. you are no doubt pointing an aggregate to null0, and the actual routes
which have meaning are more specific.

ports all on the same vlan, with "switchport" set to enable them as layer 2
switch ports. Directed IP traffic flows fine, but broadcast traffic is not
flowing between the ports.

The short story of the problem. In this test environment I have 5 NT
servers plugged into the Cat 6500 and they can't see each other view
"Network Neighborhood".

My current goal is to just get this switch to act like your basic unmanaged
switch (I'll work on the more interesting settings after I get this basic
functionality working.)

Any ideas what I might be missing?

What utilities are you guys using to find MAC addresses across a large

for their MAC, whats the easiest way to find out which switch port?

Thanks!!

RE: Interface Reset? [7:33275]

2002-01-26 Thread Bond, Jeffrey T

It's the number of times an interface has been completely reset. This can
happen if packets queued for transmission were not sent within several
seconds. On a serial line, this can be caused by a malfunctioning modem that
is not supplying the transmit clock signal, or by a cable problem. If the
system notices that the carrier detect line of a serial interface is up, but
the line protocol is down, it periodically resets the interface in an effort
to restart it. Interface resets can also occur when an interface is looped
back or shut down.

Hope this helps

Mediaone and routers.

2000-07-26 Thread Jonathan T. Bowie

Basically I was wondering what methods there are out there for getting a
2514 between my mediaone cable modem and my internal network. This is the
solution I have come up with:

ARP spoof the mac address of the NIC Mediaone's dhcp server is looking for
on eth0 and statically assign the mediaone ip address, then on the machine
that actually owns the NIC write an expect script that upon losing
connectivity to the network (probably mediaone reassigning the ip address
due to an expired lease) will use the router to transparently send the dhcp
update lease broadcast packets out to the mediaone network and then login
to the router and renumber the eth0 of the router.

As far as I know IOS 11.2(8) does not support interface numbering via dhcp.
If anyone has a better solution to this I'd love to hear it, or if there
is a flaw in my logic please let me know.

Re: Sysco cert question

2000-08-01 Thread Shawn T. Carroll

All the information you'll need to pass the test is in the documentation
on the back of the packets. Be sure to practice. I've found that 45
degree tears in the side of the packet aid in the even distribution of
condiment to jar/food.

I haven't taken the 2.0, but I heard that there was an emphasis on
deploying Lite Mayonnaise Packets.

Re: (Off-Topic) Openview vs Sniffer

2000-08-08 Thread Shawn T. Carroll

It would help to tell us more about what you're monitoring and in what
detail.

With a lot of nodes on your network often the only thing you need to know
at the highest level is "is it up". If it's not, you can drill into where
it's not working telnet here and there, etc. or use the monitoring ap that
came with your device.

How big is your network? Now many nodes, how many different things
running over the wires? i.e. IPX, SNA, or just IP? How many different
applications?

Sniffers on your network (at strategic points) will allow you to
monitor/troubleshoot to an almost infinitely small level of detail, but
you need two things to go along with it: 1. the skill and experience to
use it, and 2. the money to buy the agents and console software.

RE: Switch Design

2000-09-07 Thread Shawn T. Carroll

Honestly, what kind of applications are you running on the network? How
much traffic do you expect, and what kinds of traffic patterns (i.e. all
users using high-bandwidth network aps at once vs. 5 minutes use, then
half-hour not computing, etc.).

I recently installed a 10/100 switching infrastructure with 111 out of 192
ports in use; 5 servers, 8 printers. My observations are that 100-Meg
switched is almost overkill. Plenty of headroom. And you're thinking of
gigabit? Lot of dollars without knowing beforehand that you need it.

But again, the last word belongs to Lorenzo, in a previous post--you need
to do at least some preliminary homework to determine your needs--gather
some specifics. 100-Meg switches alone may not be enough for your
network. Of course, how they're tied together is equally important.

FWIW, my solution was to use 8 24-port switches. 3 floors in the
building, so a stack of 3, 2, and 3 (stack meaning that 3 or 2 switches
are tied together using high-speed proprietary cables--generally >
gigabit), so on each floor you have a "virtual switch" of 72, 48, and 72
ports respectively. And these stacks were tied together with dual 100-MB
Full Duplex "port trunks"--a feature you'll generally find on switches,
whereby you can connect switches or stacks of them together using not one,
but up to four cables, and do load-sharing instead of having spanning-tree
kill off the redundant connections.

Whew, took the CCDA exam on Wens. 72 questions, 755 to pass. Had 3 scenarios
with around 12 questions from them. The test really makes you think.

Books used, CCDA book by Lammle
CCDA exam Certification Guide by Cisco Press
Top Down Networking by Oppenheimer.

Quizzers
Boson Quiz #1, #2
CDs from first 2 books.

Thanks to everyone who posts on this list, lots of good information comes

Just an FYI on waiting to take the lab.

Written Exam Expiry
Candidates must attempt the CCIE Lab exam within 18 months of passing the
CCIE Qualification exam. After the first lab attempt, candidates must
attempt the CCIE lab at least once every 12 months from the last lab attempt
in order for their qualification exam to remain valid. However, if a
candidate has not passed the CCIE Lab exam within three years of passing the
qualification exam, he or she must retake the CCIE qualification exam before
the candidate will be allowed to schedule the lab exam again.

Hi guys,

This may seem a dumb q, but I'll ask it anyway.

How hard is the CCIE written. How much value do you think it adds (if
you don't intend to do the lab for a some time).

RE: Switches !!!

2000-08-13 Thread Alves Sgt Paulo T

I have to say that I'm a little confused my self!
RSP "Route Switch Processor" is used by the 7500's
RSM "Route Switch Module" can be used by Cat5500 for example.
We have currently 7 5500's with RSM's, and I tell you it is doing all of the
routing for us to include VLANs. Lot's of then.
What I am trying to say here is that I can Route between VLAN's just fine
with an RSM. I think that someone missed typed RSP with RSM.

Sean,

I'm confused. Are you saying that if I have a Catalyst 5500 with a RSP
that I will need an additional router (external to the 5500) to route
between VLANs. If that's what your saying, I would have to disagree. I
could do some additional research on it, but I want to ensure that is
what
you are saying.

I believe that the RSP is really just a 7500 and we are running a full
blown
IOS on it to boot. When I do a sho ip ro, I am seeing the local routing
table.

Thanks,

RE: Switches !!!

2000-08-14 Thread Alves Sgt Paulo T
Title: Switches !!!

A.1  If you
want to telnet into the switch you should give the switch an IP address.
This IP address should be applied to VLAN 1.  "Administrative
Interface"
A2  The NIC on
the PC will broadcast their MAC address to the switch.  You're getting the
correct picture.  However, if for some reason you are not being able to
communicate between both PC's you need to check the port assignments on the
switch.  All ports should be assigned to VLAN 1 by default.  If the
ports are not asigned to the same VLAN they are going to be on seperate
broadcast domains.  This means that in that case you'll need a router to do
the job.
I try to be as
simple as possible.
Paulo
If you're still
confused don't quit.
I've been confused
since the day I've started in this business.

RE: Ghost sessions on vty ports

2000-08-14 Thread Alves Sgt Paulo T

Craig,
I have had a problem somewhat like that before.
What I had to do was to change the exec-timout time. I did not have
anything stated in the router, and as soon as I applied the exec-timout 3
command it fixed the problem. It seems that your sessions don't have an
expiration time, and sometimes just by closing the telnet window your're not
closing the actual session. I would also try to upgrade to a knewer IOS.

Group,

Got an interesting problem. I have a 7507 that is
leaving up ghost sessions on the vty ports and on the
console port. I have tried to clear the sessions using
the normal clear commands (example clear line vty 0,
etc). I am running 11.2 (17) and was wondering if
anyone else is having problems with this version.
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of an alternate
method of clearing the ports short of rebooting the
router. Thoughts and suggestions

RE: 2924XL and 2600 Trunking problem

2000-08-15 Thread Alves Sgt Paulo T

You need a client attached and you need to assign the port to the respective
Vlan.
If you have a 2924 the command should look something like this: switchport
access vlan 2
This should be done at the respective interface. Just remmenber that once
that you have a trunk every port needs to be assigned to a vlan 1 or 2 in
your case.
Hope this helps

VLAN will not come up unless there is a client attached - VTP is irrelevant
in this context, onlt matters if you're using the higher end switches) ie
5X00, 6X00) and a router that supports MLS (3600 is the lowest model that I

RE: Router type questions

Stance,
I don't exactly know what you already have in your possession but if I am
understanding correctly, you don't have much. One router is not going to do
the trick! This is if you actualy want to learn the stuff.
There are some kits that people are selling out there. I don't have
anything for sale and I don't want to advertise it for anyone. You do your
school and research and find what fits your budget. The kits run around
$3000 to $4000 if you want to get something that can take you thru your
CCNP.
My advise take as you please.

Cisco PIX question, static, conduit, and alias [7:40722]

2002-04-06 Thread Robert T. Repko (R Squared Consultants)

I am having a problem getting to the inside Mail/Web servers from the
outside and I can't determine why.

I'm replacing an old Cisco 7000 router with a new 7206 VXR. I'm also
reconfiguring the way their PIX was setup. The servers were configured
with outside addresses (the PIX had a 'nat 0 xxx.yyy.115.0' statement)
which made them vulnerable. I am moving them to an inside address and
building a conduit from the outside to the inside.

In order to leave their old network up and running while I configured the
7206VXR. I used my PIX 506 (Ver 5.x) for configuration purposes. I had
everything configured and working. Then over the Easter holiday I
configured their PIX trying to use the same statements that I had in my PIX
506. This is where I ran into problems. Since they are running such an
old version (Ver 4.1.4) of the IOS I could not use the same exact
commands. I'm not as familiar with the PIX 4.1.4 commands and obviously
have something stated incorrectly. Below I have what I believe to be the
pertinent information from both the 7206 and PIX. Can someone tell me
where I went wrong. The xxx.yyy represent the same 2 octets through out
both configs. Any help greatly appreciated.

RE: Cisco PIX question, static, conduit, and alias [7:40722]

2002-04-07 Thread Robert T. Repko (R Squared Consultants)

I thought that's what I had?
conduit (inside,outside) xxx.yyy.115.172 25 tcp 172.20.18.172 255.255.255.255
(outside address) (port) (ip addr of host to reach)
  (inside address)

If I'm misunderstanding could you rewrite the statement above to
demonstrate what you mean.
Please keep in mind this is ver 4.1.4, 'any' is not a valid part of the
conduit statement, the PIX complains when I use 'any' in the command.

At 4/7/2002 12:59 AM, Daniel Cotts reminisced:
>Conduit should be outside address of local machine (xxx.yyy.115.172) then
>port to be reached (25 tcp) then address and subnet mask of remote hosts
>wishing access. any = 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0. It could be a single address; but I'd

RE: Cisco PIX question, static, conduit, and alias [7:40722]

2002-04-07 Thread Robert T. Repko (R Squared Consultants)

Please don't think I'm being argumentative, I'm trying to explain the
configuration I have and what I'm trying to accomplish. This is coming
from my understanding and concept, which I am starting to think is way off
base. What really throws me is that this configuration is working at
another site and at this site with my PIX 506 running Ver 5.1, just not
with their PIX running Ver 4.1.4. Maybe that's my problem, I saw this type
of a configuration first and just assumed it's the norm, when in fact it
may be a kludge.

Now to answer your questions.
I do want any outside host to access the web server.
The public address for the web server is xxx.yyy.115.190. When someone
does a DNS lookup for the www.domainname it resolves to
xxx.yyy.115.190. Therefore the host goes to xxx.yyy.115.190. While the
domainname has a public address of xxx.yyy.115.190 the actual ip address of
the server is 172.20.21.241. That's where the static and conduit commands
come in to play. The PIX accepts the address of xxx.yyy.115.190 (because
of the static statement) and sends it to 172.20.21.241 (I would use the
term routes it to 172.20.21.241 but I am afraid it would cause further
confusion ... to me). So, I do want everyone to access the web server at
ip address xxx.yyy.115.190. But that one address goes to 172.20.21.241.

If I don't use the alias command then the internal hosts can not see the
servers for which I have a conduit built, ie: web and mail servers. When
the internal host performs DNS on their own name they are unable to get to
that server. With the alias they are able to get to the server. I'm not
sure I understand why, I just know that is what's happening.

I don't know if that clarifies anything.

At 4/7/2002 06:31 PM, Kent Hundley reminisced:
