CCIE Written Passed

2001-01-05 Thread Ed Moss

I finally made a passing mark for the CCIE Written with a 79%. Four days
ago I missed the passing score by only 3%. With the encouragement of
several people here in GroupStudy, co-workers and friends, I was convinced
to reschedule.

>From my original exam, I scored very low in areas that I thought I would
have been comfortable in. I believe my comfort level contributed to those
poor scores. Many have said it before read the question, read it again.
You should know the answer before you look at the possibilities. After you
have made your selection - read it again and ensure it is justified.

For studying for the exam, I really don't have much more to offer than what
has already been posted elsewhere on the list other than these comments:

I believe the "CCIE Study Guide" by Giles provides an excellent
presentation on layer one and two topics for each of the technologies
(Ethernet, Token-Ring, FDDI, etc.).

CCO has many excellent documents. Ones I thought provided a great deal
of help in understanding was "Loading System Images and Configuration
Files", NLSP, and DSLw+.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the help.
The journey continues

CCIE written passed

2000-10-23 Thread Frank Z

All,
Well after too much study, I have passed the
written. It really wasn't that hard at all. I can say
the best prep site was Certification zone's tests. I
had taken 4 of them previously, so had 400 study
questions to help. It is important to not only know
the answer to each of these questions, but also
understand the nature of the topic it is referring to.
This helped me more than anything and I found myself
really digging to understand a few unknown concepts to
me. Also, their specific topic study guides were very
helpful (especially TOKEN ring, you gotta know it).
Good luck to everyone in their testing.

CCIE Written Passed

2000-10-28 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Hi, guys and gals! Miss me while I was gone? :->

I am quite pleased and very proud to announce that I passed my CCIE written
this morning. I won't bore you with my score, let alone the number of
questions on the test and the passing score. This sort of thing information
is available elsewhere. My own score is irrelevant, except to say that it
wasn't even close. ;->

All in all, this was a very good test, in my opinion. There were a couple of
questions that might be considered ambiguous. There was certainly a bit of
whimsy to be found. I nearly broke out laughing at a couple of the totally
discongrous things I saw. I have to wonder how many test takers even realize
the humor that is to be found in a couple of places? :->

In terms of preparation, let me state that in my experience, there is NO
substitute for Jeff Doyle's TCP/IP Routing, nor Bassam Halabi's Internet
Routing Architectures. I also used the CCIE Exam Cram book, with good
effect. Heresy as it is to suggest this, I believe that in terms of pure
test preparation, that with regards to Radia Perlman's Interconnections, one
might find better ways to spend one's time. ( this is NOT to say there is no
value to be found, NOR is it to say that one should NOT read the book. It is
only to say that in terms of pure preparation for the CCIE written as I saw
it, there are better sources available ) I also took advantage of a number
of study materials freely available from CCO, CCPrep, and our own groupstudy
web site. The latter two sites have some token ring / RIF information that
was invaluable. I also spent a LOT of time with the materials one can obtain
by subscribing to Certification Zone ( disclosure - I have been compensated
for services rendered to Certification Zone )

If I were to tabulate, I would say that the plurality of questions involved
OSPF and bridging of various kinds. There was far less BGP than I would have
expected, given what the Blueprint describes. In terms of a couple of areas,
such as router operation, protocol behavior fundamentals, and so on, that
Exam Cram proved to be quite useful. One might consider investing in this
one even at the CCNA level, and growing into it.

Also, when you read my signature, your will understand that I am embarrassed
to report that my worst score by far fell under the category of security

Lastly, I wanted to mention that I saw several questions on my test that I
have also seen posed here on Groupstudy - almost word for word, and right
down to some very accurate representations of the diagrams. Some of you bad
boys and girls have been violating the NDA. Shame on you ;->

I am aware that Nigel, Bernard, and the other Chuck will be taking their
written's over the next couple of days. It is definitely looking like the
class of 2001 is shaping up quite well. Hey, guys, I look forward to seeing
your announcements of your own success Monday and Tuesday. There is no doubt
in my mind. If I can do it, you certainly can. Just don't outsmart
yourselves. Always THINK!  :->

I kinda look at it this way. I began the climb to Everest at the shoreline
of India. CCNA/CCDA = Delhi. CCNP/CCDP = Katmandu. CCIE Written = Base Camp
18,000 feet. The rest of the climb looks real steep, real tough. But I can
look back along my route and see that I have come a long way. And like the
Little Engine of lore, I Think I Can! There are too many of you who are
entitled to and deserving of my thanks for your advice, your wisdom, your
good humor, your knowledge. I can only say that it is indeed my privilege to
know and associate with each and every one of you.

See you all up on the top of Everest!

CCIE Written Passed!

2000-11-11 Thread Norma Schutt

The second time around was a cinch! (I failed it the first time with a
66%. ) I studied for a couple more weeks and took it again this morning
and passed with an 84%. Both times I only had about 5 minutes left on the
clock when I was finished.

The first time, I had done really well in only 3 areas where I'd spent the
majority of my time studying. This time around, I studied only in the
areas I had done poorly in before. It really showed. I scored 100% in
three areas and over 90% in three others. (And, the areas that I skipped
reviewing this time around did not suffer much from lack of review, either.)

I just needed a little more time for all the pieces to settle into
place. Now, it's off to the Lab!!!

CCIE Written Passed!

2000-11-20 Thread Tim Ross

I passed my CCIE written exam today. It was a very frustrating exam. After I
failed it the first time, I purchased the Boson CCIE practice Test. Boson
had helped me before to prepare and pass CID and complete my CCDP track.

If not for these, I might be re-taking this exam until this time next year.
It was the best investment I ever made. The good thing about it is that, it
is more like a tutor than a practice test. It clarified lots of areas that I
had problems with.

My other advice: go to http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/CCIE
It is the blueprint of the things that you should know. Cisco is not
kidding. You must know whatever is mentioned here.

Sorry, I can't provide more info (NDA), but study hard because the test
content is broad, test questions ambiguous.

Well, I finally passed with a 72%. Not great but it was above the 70 required.

I will soon post my study materials and other related information on my website
www.thetestpage.net

This is diffinetly possible for anyone. 1 year ago I'd never touched a router. So
don't give up.

Remember that a great deal of the questions are trick questions.

Have fun

Tim,

I have been advised that the CID 3.0 exam is a really good starting point
for passing the CCIE written. If so, what would you advise brushing up on

CCIE Written Passed ---- JUST!

2000-12-06 Thread McCallum, Robert

Hi,

I have just received the beautiful news that I have passed the CCIE Written.
At the moment I am still typing with my hands trembling from the experience.
For those of you who have still to sit this exam good luck. I personally
didn't enjoy the experience as from question 50 I thought I had failed. As
for exam questions I can hardly remember any BUT what I will say is that you
do not get told how many answers there are to the questions i.e. choose all
that apply between 1 and 8 answers. On most of these questions (around 30)
I found that I always had a maybe correct, so I was faced with do I check it
or Not.

The subject headings for my exam were :-

Cisco Device Operation
Networking Theory
Bridging and LAN Switching
TCP/IP
IP routing protocols
Desktop Protocols
Performance management
WAN
LAN
Security
Multiservice

For me the areas that I thought I was strong in i.e. TCPIP, Cisco device
operation were the worst (except the security questions 33% in that field).
I scored 50% in TCPIP (doh!) and 50 % in Cisco device operation. You really
have to know your bridging if you don't, I reckon you wont pass.

The total I got was 70% the pass mark was 70% -- what springs to mind
is I am one lucky person. But hell, it still says PASS.

I am now sitting the design written in two days (I must be MAD!), will let
you know how that goes but after this experience I am not looking forward to
it.

Aste!

P.S. I am heading to the pub right now! Cheers!!

Could you outline the level of security info you thought would be enough,
but didn't turn out to be. It would be a big help. thanks.

Re: CCIE Written Passed

2000-10-30 Thread Daniel Boutet

Congrats Chuck,

This is your time for a little rest before the "big one".
I have been on this list for about four months and realized that the help
I am getting is invaluable. The best advise from the list so far is
surely the reference to Jeff Doyle's BIBLE I have been procrastinating
on the OSPF (chapter 9) for at least a 1 1/2 week so far. OSPF is so well
written, covered, explained, broken down, configured etc... that I cannot
wait to take in the rest of the book (I started with chapter 9)

My library consist of over 100 books (not only Cisco) and this is by far the
most comprehensible
book that I ran across for the subjects covered (wish BGP was covered). I
know it has been said
a thousand time but if you do not have that book the you don't have a
complete routing library!

Way to go again Chuck and I like your comments!

Another Wannabe (CCIE Written Passed)

2001-02-12 Thread Craig Columbus

I passed the CCIE Written this morning, so I guess I'm an official wannabe now.
For those of you still studying, here's some insight:
I prepared by going the CCDA, CCNA, CCNP, CCDP route (all 1.0 version).
I highly recommend reading Doyle - Routing TCP/IP, Halabi - Internet
Routing Architectures, and Perlman - Interconnections, until you fully
understand the content. From other's I've spoken with, Caslow's Cisco
Certification might also be a good addition.
I did a last minute review by reading the whitepapers at
Certificationzone.com (thanks to all who contribute). I wouldn't, however,
recommend using these whitepapers as your only study methodology; they're
more of a rapid overview of core content.
I found the test to be slightly easier than the CID3.0, though with
different content.
Anything on the Cisco guidelines is fair game, though I suggest that you
know your bridging (and all that goes along with it) cold.
All in all, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
Well, I'm off to start preparing for the lab now.

Craig

CCIE Written Passed - Base Camp..!

2000-10-30 Thread Nigel Taylor

Hey Gang,
 Well
that big day has come and gone and let me say that I'm glad this part of the
process is over.  Something weird about being able to read and understand
the material without having to meet a test(goal) to feel that you've read and
understood the material.  On that note let me share with you that I've now
joined the rest of "Class 2001". (Chuck L  - Bernard, and Chuck Church
waiting to hear the word)

Let me say that Chuck L's review on the various materials
required to prepare for this exam was right on.  However, based on the exam
I took today I cannot express the importance of knowing token ring/Bridging/RIF
format/Hex and binary conversion /Non-canonical and Canonical conversion.
I'm sure this is not new information to most of you but man was there quite a
bit of that stuff on the exam. The standard few IGRP/EIGRP/OSPF and BGP stuff
was present as well.

I think one of the big things that made the difference was the
subscription to CertificationZone(plug..!) I must admit the questions in my exam
was more on par with the level of the questions on Cert Zone and the Study
Questions CDROM.

I too used the Exam Cram as mentioned by chuck, the questions
in the book are reasonable but in retrospect the questions seemed a little too
easy.  The other point of interest was that I could go back as well as mark
the questions you felt uncertain about. Also be prepared to choose multiple
answers without being told how many choices.(I hope I didn't break the
NDA).

Anyway, it sure seems like it's been a long day so I leave on
this note.  Thanks to everyone in the group and I mean everyone.
Sometimes it seemed like some question were dumb and yes some were but this kind
of free thinking is what makes "Studygroup" the success it is today.

Special thanks to all the folks that make reading the post
worthwhile - Chuck, Phil, Priscilla, Howard to name a few and most of all Paul
B. for providing a place for this process to flourish.

Well Chuck it seems like I made it to "Base Camp" now my
head looks up to the sky towards Mt. Everest as I look to the journey
ahead.  See you at the top..

Thanks again, All

Nigel.

CCIE written passed! [7:2615]

2001-04-30 Thread scott mann

Feels Good!

I just passed the CCIE written. It was not actually all that hard if you
have all of your CCNP stuff still in your head. Just studied for a couple of
weeks after taking 3 months off from CCNP. I would suggest that all
candidates buy the new Caslow book and buy the Boson tests. Use the Bosons
not only for the memorization of questions, but also for the
explanations/references given for each answer. I spent about 4 hours per day
studying for these two weeks using just these two guides.

Thanks to those who helped me by answering my questions...They directly
helped if you know what I mean...

On to the LAB...should take about 3-4 months to study intermixed with my
actual job.

CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-05-31 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

I took the CCIE written yesterday afternoon and passed (80%)

I was expecting more, but I flunked the performance/QoS section of the exam,
which I neglected somewhat during preparation.

I used both Boson #1 and Boson #3. Those 2 tests are complementary and are
NOT substitute for each other. Boson #3 focuses on SNA issues where as Boson
#1 focuses on the other networking topics.
If you can, you should purchase both tests.

For preparation I did a pre-test on Boson #3 and discovered how little SNA
and ATM I knew. For 3 weeks, I studied SNA and ATM using CCO + hands-on
until the whole thing felt natural. Then, on the 4th week of preparation I
repeated the same strategy with Boson #1. I dicovered 3 areas of networking
where I had some weaknesses. I only had time to work on 2 of them thoroughly
before the test.

Thank you to Bernard and Dennis for excellent test materials and to all
those who gracefully took the time to answer my questions. I particularly
want to thank Priscilla and Leigh Anne who both put me back on track several
times during the last two years and Daniel Cotts for squeezing some time out
of his busy schedule to spend some time discussing Cisco with me.

CCIE Written Passed & Lab Advise [7:30838]

2002-01-03 Thread Olympia Ric

I just passed the CCIE Routing and Switching Qualification Exam and would
appreciate recommendations on preparing for the lab. I do not have access to
Cisco gear at work but have registered for Global Knowledge CCIE lab
preparation courses. What equipment do I need? Rent vs buy. Recommended lab
sites preferably in the Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland area. I would
consider other location as well depending on how good they are.Do I need to
schedule my lab date now?

Thanks.

Re: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-05-31 Thread neil K.

Hi Alex,

Congratulations.
I am also planning to take the CCIE written next month.I don't have any
material from Boson or from anybody else.
Could you please tell me which book to follow for the QoS / performance, and
how much of this stuff is asked in the exam.
Also is the will Boson Material help a lot?

Thanks,

Neil

RE: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-05-31 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

Well, if the moderators let this through, I'll probably get flamed to death
because I'm always pushing CCxx Productions. Why? Because I wrote most of
the materials. However, I can guarantee that they cover the exact same
topics as Boson at a much better price. The difference is that you get the
materials in Microsoft Word format instead of a test engine. But the
advantage of that is that you can transport the materials anywhere you want.
With Boson, you can only put the materials on one PC.

Flame away

2002-05-31 Thread Pierre-Alex Guanel

The IOS documentation has a section on QoS. Check CC0

Regarless of your method of preparation you need to take some test

to check your understanding. Boson was a great help in that matter.

Good luck on your exam.

I'm sure this will get deleted also, but I would at least like to add that
there's no reason to pay for something you can get for free.

go to google and try typing "ccie cheat"

Bingo, the Global Document Database has a TON of great stuff!

RE: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-06-01 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

Here's why it matters: I had a discussion with Paul Borghese (owner of
Groupstudy) a while back regarding messages on this list that are from
people trying to tout their websites or products. As long as the messages
are helping someone with a problem on this list (which you were, and that's
cool) and the person writing the message makes note of their involvement
with the product or service, then the message is in good taste. Paul doesn't
want this list to become a list of advertisements for anyone who has a Cisco
product to sell, which I can understand. That's why whenever I mention CCxx
Productions, Network Learning, Quizware, or Boson (whom I'm not too fond of
right now) when trying to help someone with a certification question or
trying to help them save money on their certification study materials, I
make note of any involvement that I've had with them in the past, present,
or future.

RE: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-06-01 Thread Nick Lesewski

I love how all these guys use boson as the point of comparison. That alone
tells me something. When I passed the written I used several of the popular
books, including reading Caslow and Doyle, which are more for the lab, but
are great books. Then I tested myself with the #1 and #3 bosons; and they
were great. One of them, and I don't remember which, had something like 400
questions and was right on the money.

Lastly, the current version of the written is going away soon, and if
anybody is getting ready to test out, they should have multiple sources of
study. Definitely read the popular books, review the public domain
cramsessions that are around, and download a couple of these practice test
things. The test costs $300 (or at least it did when I took it, I think
it's more now), and buying ALL the popular books, the bosons AND shawn's
home grown ms word document thingy is less then the price of failing just
once and having to take it again.

Just my $.02 (was that a gentle enough flame?)

That was a fair enough flame. HOWEVER, :-) the reason Boson is used as the
comparison is because people are cultified (is that a word?) with them even
though they could get CCIE Written materials for $50.00 less than Boson that
cover the EXACT SAME TOPICS! WHY IS THAT? ARE PEOPLE AFRAID OF CHANGE, OR
WHAT? Doesn't that tell you something? It would sure tell me something!
Like, what could I do with an extra $50.00 in my pocket!

How can one save $50.00 on a product that only costs $40 to begin with?

RE: CCIE Written passed - Boson [7:45535]

2002-06-01 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G

Nic said that he used both Boson 1 and 3. That's about $80.00 for
questions/topics that are covered in other materials for $29.95. I could
safely say that all the topics in all three Boson exams (about $120.00) are
covered in other materials for only $29.95. If someone's got all three
Bosons and wants to match topic for topic with CCxx materials, contact me
offline.

Shawn, no offence, but we get the point. Boson is good and
expensive, CCxx is good and cheap. Boson has a test engine, CCxx doesn't.
Boson has a name, CCxx is making it. Summed up, Boson wins in many people's
book.

Why don't you use Zyxel routers in everyday life? Boy, they are
cheaper than Cisco and they route, too!

Marko.

P.S. I'm just a satisfied Boson customer.

2000-10-30 Thread Chuck Church

All,

I guess it was a good weekend to be taking the CCIE Written if your
name was Chuck! This morning I passed with a 75%. Had but 5 minutes to
spare, but never really felt rushed. It was a fair but mentally draining
test. None of the questions were ambiguous. I could have spent more time
studying BGP, IS-IS, and DECnet, but everything else was fairly familiar.
My score sheet doesn't list the number of questions in each section, but
I'll list my percentages for the possible benefit of the group. Things that
I used to prepare were:

1. On the job experience - I worked with Cat 5000 and 72xx extensively at
my last job which was a bank. Currently working for a reseller where I'm
doing everything from PIX to Aironet wireless. I can't imagine passing the
test without lots of hands-on experience.

2. Cisco Press books - Used the Halabi BGP book, and most of the actual
courseware from the CCNP track. Also used some of the titles from the CCIE
development series.

3. Giles CCIE prep book. Has some amazing (and amazingly boring) details
on token ring and FDDI. I think the Cisco Press books are much better,
though.

4. Certification Zone - Practice written tests and the white papers are
great. Well worth the money. The practice written tests are tougher than
the real one. I had scores of 600, 750, 700, and 710 these last 4 months.
Great preparation.

Now I just got that little lab thingy to pass :) What's the lead time for
scheduling? I'm thinking I might be ready by January? If there's anyone in
the NYC area looking for a CCIE lab study partner, let me know.

SCORES:

Cisco device operation - 71%
Networking Theory - 83%
Bridging and LAN switching - 70% Ughh, token ring
TCP/IP - 75%
IP Routing Protocols- 80%
Desktop Protocols- 87% Knowledge of NetWare helped here
Performance Management - 33% I have no idea what happened here
WAN - 83%
LAN - 60% I always thought I was better with LAN
than WAN...
Security- 100% This is more of a mystery than the 33%
above
Multiservice- 0% I assume there was only a couple questions
here.

If you are in the DC are maybe you should consider the Net Master Class by
Bruce and Val instead of the Global Knowledge. I attended ECP1 and know a
couple of individuals who attended the new RSNMC1, it sounds like the new
class is even better.

www.netmasterclass.net

You should be able to schedule your lab date soon. It usually takes a couple
of days for it to be reported to Cisco. There is an online registration tool
on the Cisco web site in the certification section. The dates are about six
months out. Don't worry about the backlog, most candidates need the time to
prepare. Just schedule a date and get cracking.

Thanks.

There is a CCIE practice Lab in Virginia. I believe the author of the great
book Bridges,Routers and Switches (Caslow) used to teach for that Lab.

How about a "Chuck - Chuck - Nigel " thing. Yes, it does seem like

FYI, the reliability of LLC Type 2 is usually end-to-end (host-to-host). An
end-station host would retransmit if a frame didn't get acknowledged, not a
router or bridge. When is that not the case? (A CID-type question. ;-)

By the way, LLC Type 2 is also used by NetBEUI, in addition to SNA.
