BGP vs CCNP (For Fred R) [7:75207]

2003-09-10 Thread Joseph Brunner
Fred R. You're obvious a pretty smart guy. Your posts here are
very well structured and helpful.

Don't put so much stock in the CCNP(NA) vs. bgp.

I had my ccna only a few short months, when we went to multihoming
with BGP.

Do you really think that the small enterprise is going to
use all the advanced BGP stuff to get it working nicely
(route reflectors, confeds, clusters, etc).

That stuff is for REALLY big Enterprises, and Bigger ISP's.

I have never had to use more than route-maps, prefix-lists
and "next-hop self" to get it working smooth.

Also pretty much any ISP that runs BGP itself will allow you to advertise a
/24 or greater. The only argument where the block comes from.

MCI (formerly wcom/uunet)
Qwest
Sprint
ATT
Winstar (now owned by IDT)

all have offered /24 and bgp for T-1 service. Several I use now.

BGP for multihoming, load-balancing, and pretty much whatever else
at the enterprise level is very basic and easy to design, setup
and even troubleshoot.

1 thing I have always liked alot are the networkers
"troubleshooting BGP and design" powerpoint files they put out
ever year.

exams twice recently.
As my CCNA is only valid until Dec 6th this year, does this mean I'll have
to do it all over again ??

Yes, the Lab Companion guides can be used standalone without the rest of the
Network Academy material. They have lots of labs that you can do on your
own, assuming you have enough equipment.

In the case of CCNA, many of the labs are easier and also more detailed then
you have to know for CCNA. For example, there are pages of labs on using a
LAN Fluke test and a wire-punch tool and configuring a PC for networking and
doing subnet masks.

I don't have the CCNP ones in front of me. My guess is they are a bit more
advanced and assume the student is less clueless.

> (What is the
> journal used for anyways?)

The journal has summaries and notes and ideas for the student to take notes.
I don't think they are helpful.

At first the Academy just told students to keep journals. I think that was a
great approach and real-world. Personally, I have never been without an
engineering journal. I've kept one for 25 years now. They have all my notes
regarding projects. I think Cisco should have just explained to the students
how people really use engineering journals and tried to get the students to
do that too. Instead, they got lots of complains from high-school teachers
(who teach the Academy program) that nobody knew what this journal thing
was. So they wrote their own journals. Which totally misses the point.

Well, anyway, back to your point! ;-) Yes, I think the companion guides are
worth the money and would be helpful for home study.

Do these lab companions have specific labs for study or does it only work
off of the Network Academy books? Basically, what I am asking is if they
can be used separately with my own home lab versus do I need to get the
whole package of Network Academy companion book, lab book, and journal?
(What is the journal used for anyways?)

For a low price of about $30 US you should buy:

"CCNP Cisco Networking Academy Program: Semester Five Lab Companion,
Advanced Routing" from Cisco Press.

There's also a lab companion guide for switching and remote access.

They include topology drawings and all the info you need to set up the lab.

Security is new to the Academy program, but there should be some materials
for it too from Cisco Press, since it's certainly not new to Cisco or their
certification programs.

Good luck!

RE: CCNP Lab design and Topology [7:74389]

2003-08-26 Thread Daniel Cotts
Have you contacted your local Cisco office for assistance in setting up the
Networking Academy? I'm sure they would be glad to help in any way.
Else, purchase the Cisco Press books for the various courses. They should
indicate what equipment is suggested. My point being that while maybe 2600
series routers are specified - 2500 routers will substitute for some. That
may be important if your budget is limited.
Just looked at the "Semester Five Companion Guide - Advanced Routing" book.
Each student team (usually one or two individuals) uses one pod of three
routers. The recommendation is two 2620 and one 2621 routers per pod.
Keep in mind that the courses will change as new equipment and technologies
are created. Best to teach the basics - and for that older gear may work
just fine.

Nope, you're out of luck.

The following is a copy/paste from the above link:

14. What is the impact on me when my certification expires?
You may no longer represent yourself as a holder of that certification or
use the designation on your business card. And once your certification
expires, you will no longer be able to recertify with a single exam. If you
want the same certification, you will have to start over and complete all
prerequisites and exams.

This has been talked about previously on this list.

Hiyah everyone,

Been quite busy of late, preparing for the exams, so I haven't checked this
site for ages, and my e-mail was full...

Neway, as the subject heading, I just wanted to say that I'm now a CCNP.

Took 3 papers in bout 2 weeks, before the changes took effect. I found
Support to be the most challenging.

Well, time to end the festivities and begin preparing for the fearful CCIE..
though I'm not sure whether I should head off into Security or R&S.

As far as practice tests go I would recomend transcender.

Hope that helps ;-)

Hi all... I apologize if this shows up twice... I waited half a day and the

Anyway,
Has anyone seen or know what the current equipment list is for the CCNP

Specifically:

1) What switches are now being used/tested on in BSMSN 2.0?

2) Is the BCRAN 2.0 test still testing on that useless 700 router?

3) What switches are now being tested on? Has the CatOS been dropped or is
the 5500 still valid?

Thanks

2003-08-14 Thread Reimer, Fred
I think he is referring to a RJ45 jack on one end, and a RJ45 connector on
the other, so that you can turn a normal patch cable into a cross-over
cable.

I'd actually suggest plugging all of the router Ethernet ports into a switch
so that you can create VLANs and match two routers up in an ad-hoc kind of
way remotely...

New CCNP 642-8x1 exams [7:73598]

2003-08-14 Thread Alan Ho
We all know that the existing CCNP (640-xxx) will no longer be available
after Sept and will be replaced by the new 642-8x1 series. However there is
no preparation materials (e.g. Cisco Press books) available as of today.

Can someone let us know the differences between the current exams and the
642- series so that we can prepare to sit the new exams in Oct/Nov?

I tried the Cisco Certification sites and print out the exam syllabus of
both but cannot make out the difference as they are presented in different
formats.

Thank you

RE: CCNP and future CCIE lab setup [7:73696]

2003-08-14 Thread Daniel Cotts
You have a great start. Let's consider what you have. The 2500s are great.
In time, you will want to load an Enterprise version of IOS. That requires
16 MB Flash and 16 MB DRAM. There are many sources of third party DRAM and
Flash - check the archives.
You didn't say if the 2600s had any WIC cards. Two WIC-1Ts in each would be
great. I recently bought several at an average price of $50 each. Just be
patient.
Again, verify how much Flash and DRAM you need for all your routers to run
the images you want.
Back-to-back serial cables. Again several sources. I have purchased from Bob
Lowery, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good prices and great service. Length depends on
how you group your routers. Three foot (one meter) is handy if the routers
are close together. Six foot or ten foot might also be useful.
Ethernet cables. You'll want some crossover cables. May I suggest making
some very short ones with a plug on one end and a jack on the other. Then
add a regular patch cord of the desired length to meet your needs.
Consider racking your equipment. Besides the full height racks you may have
at work, there are short portable racks made for musicians. The rack is part
of a shipping container. The discussions about these on groupstudy indicated
they were quite reasonably priced.
If you start with Routing, I would think that you have everything you need.
I'll assume, without checking, that the 8 A/S module has DB-60 interfaces.
Later when you do Remote Access an ISDN simulator would be a great addition.
CCO has many resources. There are many great books. Consider some of those
mentioned often on the list. Doyle "Routing TCP/IP" Vols I and II, "Cisco
LAN Switching" by Clark and Hamilton, the Cisco Press books for the
Networking Academy courses, etc.
Good luck and have fun.

2003-08-14 Thread R. Benjamin Kessler
I think they're suggesting that you make a short cross-over male to female
cable (instead of the standard male to male patch cable).

The idea being that you could still use your standard patch cables and where
a cross-over cable was required and simply connect the short cross-over to
one end.

Does this clear it up for you or are you more confused?

I honestly do not know what you are referring to. A plug on one side and a

Can you please explain what that is about?

RE: New CCNP 642-8x1 exams [7:73598]

2003-08-14 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G
After looking over the blueprints, there aren't a lot of differences between
the old exams and the new exams that I can see. There are some newer topics,
but I really don't see enough change between the old exams and the new exams
to get nervous about. I noticed that Cisco likes to take a topic from an old
blueprint and re-word it so that it looks different in a new blueprint, even
though it's the same topic.

Here's what I've noticed "most of the time" in the past when Cisco releases
a new version of a particular exam: The core topics are always covered,
regardless of whether you're taking an old exam or a new exam. Cisco likes
to re-word questions taken from old exams and put them on new exams.
However, they still cover the same topics. Know these core topics and you
have 90% of the exam covered. The other 10% may be new questions covering
new technologies, etc.

Just my opinion.

Subject: New CCNP 642-8x1 exams [7:73598]

We all know that the existing CCNP (640-xxx) will no longer be available
after Sept and will be replaced by the new 642-8x1 series. However there is
no preparation materials (e.g. Cisco Press books) available as of today.

Can someone let us know the differences between the current exams and the
642- series so that we can prepare to sit the new exams in Oct/Nov?

I tried the Cisco Certification sites and print out the exam syllabus of
both but cannot make out the difference as they are presented in different
formats.

Thank you

Bri module (dont know module name), 2-2912, 1-2950.

Can you also give me any suggestions? Larus has mentioned a backbone router
but isnt the 3640 sufficient? Overall... is there anything else that i need
to improve this other than 3550 switches which are way out of my budget!!!?

Re: CCNP >> MCSE >> hands on [7:73284]

2003-08-01 Thread Gnart
Please clarify: You mentioned both W2KServer & Desktop (is is
Professional)?
If W2Kserver are you running Workgroup or Domain? If domain, please check
to make sure W98 is logged into the domain.
If Workgroup do you have any personal firewall running? If you do, check
the traffic log and open UDP port 137/138 for local network or open up all
for local network subnet.
Did you share the W2K drive (not just administrative share) and allow
everyone to the share?
If W2Kserver install network monitor on the W2K and capture the traffic for
analysis.

Just double check on the Workstation service on the Win2K server. I have
worked on systems in NT4 environment and there used to be this service which
provides all services to NT clients, and if this is off the clients can not

Re: CCNP >> MCSE >> hands on [7:73284]

2003-07-31 Thread annlee
Typically, on a home or small business LAN, the firewall
reconizes a network as internal (trusted) or Internet (damned
dangerous), and has default port settings based on that.
ZoneAlarm is a popular software firewall, and automagically
detects networks based on TCP/IP settings. If you designate that
you trust the network, the default is to leave the Windows
networking ports open (that can be changed, of course).
The Internet, however, is by default never trusted.

ZA is actually pretty good -- I found a little porn package on a
customer's home PC when it tried to phone home and we said words
to the effect of "where did that come from?"

Why silly, it came from an unprotected DSL connection!

Yup, realized that right after I hit send. I am used to troubleshooting
things here. Have to double check everything a tech says he did. Had a guy
one day tell me there was a network problem with a PC, everything at the PC
checked out OK. I asked for the cable number, checked the database, check
the switch port, and no activity. Went down to the machine, did a couple
checks, decided to make sure the jumper cable was pushed in all the way.
This is when I discovered that the cable wasn't even plugged in. Since then
I check the obvious first.

you need an account on the 2k box with the cumputer name of the win 9x
box. Then if you try to access the box it should ask you for a password.
Simply enter the one you set and your good to go. Oh also do you have
the client for MS networks installed

If you want to save money, do the research and do it in pieces. If you want
it all there for you, buy the bundle. It just depends on how far you want to
go with your investment dollars. It also depends on if you are planning on
going further then just your ccnp. I learned a ton in setting up our lab and
pieceing it together router by router. Good luck with your lab building =)

Looks pretty good. On Ebay most of those routers go around 200 or more
(unless they have gone down again). Not sure on the switch, I think the 1924
I have went for 250 with free shipping. The DTE/DCE cables are about 9 a
piece. Biggest thing on the 25xx routers is the 16Mb of flash, which those
have. Otherwise you have to mess with the rom chips etc. Good luck with your
lab those pieces make up a good portion of my lab as well.

Studying for CCNP switching Need a LAB??? [7:73174]

Hi I am beginning my studies for my CCNP. I work with routers and switches
at work, and Before that I also took the courses. But I want to have a full
CCNP lab now while I read on my own to fiddle around with, and incorporate
into my Solaris/Win2000/2003/Linux network. I was wondering what equipment
is necessary?

Ok if someone would be so kind as to break it down by certification ex..
what i need for swithing, routing etc
Then what would I need overall?

Also has anyone put their CCNP lab equipment into a full network? If so
what does your network look like? Did you simulate separate LAN's/Countries
etc...

P.S. Do you think it's better to buy it all at once or as needed for each
individual test? I know I could probably get it done by just reading and
through my job and previous schooling. But i really want a lab so i could
turn that lab upside down. I want to be able to handle any situation, i
cant very well bring down my work routers or switches, but it can be
simulated in a lab without fear of knocking out an entire county.

Thanks for the help.

I usually see on EBAY that they sell complete CCNP labs, what do you think
of going this route? Are they good?

thanks sorry for the long winded post.

Thanks God,
Thanks father and mother,
Thanks friends who's helped me,
I've passed my BCRAN 642-821 exam yesterday, the score to pass is 790,
the exam has 67 questions, 75 minutes, one simulation (one for my exam,
simulation is not difficult, cisco said that you should not spend more
than 10 minues for one simulation question) and it's the first exam of
mine toward CCNP
After the exam, I realize that, it is not very difficult to pass CCNP
exams if you could spend time to study CCNP materials, documents on
Cisco website and doing some labs, simulator software is a good choice
for inexpensive labs
Goodluck to me and you all

Hi,

Probably Cisco wants to make the CCNP/CCDP/CCIP certifications more
difficult to acquirelike it appears that the passing score for BSCI will
go up to 776, as I saw from a friend of mine who did the BSCI Beta test.

So, we have to be prepared for challenges ahead.

Good Luck!

This is the way I did it. My own humble opinion is that this way scales down
in the degree of difficulty, hardest first, easiest last, and the order
seemed to sit nicely in terms of what you learned serving you well for the

I'm gonna deviate from the norm on this. I have taken the BSCI and
Switching exams in the last month. I think the study material you have would
likely be fine for those except you need to add Is-Is to the routing info.
I think that you could hunker down and get ready for the switching exam
before they change it September 7. once they change it You will have to
either get new study material or supplement it more than for the current set
of exams. But like I said, I would knock off the Swiitching one first since
(my opinion) it is easier. Get it out of the way before it changes. The
Routing exam isn't supposed to change all that much.

Good Luck!

In the Academy program we offer BSCI first then
follow with BCRAN , BCMSN and finish with the
CIT course.

The new CIT exam, when released, is supposed
to kick the difficulty level up a couple of notches.

The materials have been updated, especially BSCI. BCMSN is more
oriented towards the 3550 now, but not too many changes really.
BCRAN added some really simple questions on VPN, xDSL, and Cable,
but otherwise has remained the same for years. For BSCI, I suggest
getting the new material, all the others are probably fine to study with
even really outdated material such as CY2000.

BCRAN is the hardest test in most people's opinions. Most people do
BCMSN -> BSCI -> BCRAN -> CITbut I did CIT first because it's
really easy. Most people do CIT last since it incorporates questions from
all three other exams. I think it's beneficial to have studied the BSCI
material before taking the BCRAN, and also beneficial to study the
BCMSN before taking the BSCI, but everyone is different.

(Cisco's Answer)RE: CCNP and CCNA recertification [7:72138]

2003-07-14 Thread grant franklin
Hi, Kevin Wigle and Mwalie W

Thanks for your answer, you are very kindly and helpful and your answer is
all correct. To get CCNP certification, a valid (not expired) CCNA
certification is required. So it means that I need to spend another US$125
to take the CCNA exam, although the exam itself is easy. I plan to take the
CCNA exam this Friday, and then I am a VALID CCNP. :-) After finish that, I
can do my best to prepare the CCIE written exam.

I think we are "net friends", I'm glad to help you when you need.

Best Regards,

Grant

The following is the answer from Cisco.

Cisco's Answer--
Dear Qing:

Yes, you will need to take the CCNA exam. To achieve the Cisco Certified
Network Professional (CCNP) certification you have a valid CCNA certification.

On June 24, 2003 Cisco Systems, Inc. announced three enhancements to the
CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) program. The enhancements include a
new two-step exam path for new candidates entering the networking field,
revisions to the existing CCNA exam and the option for candidates to
recertify their CCNA certification by passing the ICND 640-811 exam.

Candidates have two options to obtain their CCNA certification:
1. Passing the CCNA 640-607 (Last day to register September 30, 2003) or
CCNA 640-801 exam (available on June 30, 2003)
2. Passing the INTRO 640-821 exam (currently as beta exam 641-821) and ICND
640-811 exam (available on June 30, 2003)

Cisco has developed several recommended courses that are only available
through a Cisco Certified Learning Partner. Use the Learning Locator to
locate the next available course in your area. Contact the Learning Partner
directly for course availability, registration information and cost.

it doesn't seem like anyone wants to commit and possibly tell you not to
worry about LANE when you might have some questions on it in the test. From
everything I have seen on line, in the books I have recently studied and
from the BCMSN class I took last week, I would say NO> I don't think there
are any LANE questions on the 640-604 test.

Simon,

Careful there! Don't mistake MLS for MPLS. Two different animals entirely.
MLS is Multi-Layer Switching and is strictly a LAN technology while MPLS
(Multi-Protocol Label Switching) is predominantly used in the WAN.

Here's some stuff on MPLS.
http://www.convergedigest.com/Bandwidth/archive/010910TUTORIAL-rgallaher1.ht
m
http://www.mplsrc.com/
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/mpls/mpls_presentations.shtml
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/mpls/mpls_techdoc.shtml

Cisco Networkers 2001 Power session on MPLS:
http://www.cisco.com/networkers/nw01/pres/pr/542/

Also, if you go to http://www.webtorials.com, you'll see a link for "MPLScon
2003 Conference Presentation Handouts". You'll need a Webtorials account but
they're free. The links for creating an account or signing in are up at the
top of the page. This is one of the best places to look since the
information goes into a bit more depth than that on most sites.

Hope this helps,

Karen

Re[2]: CCNP ReCert Questions [7:72071]

2003-07-14 Thread Karen E Young
Simon,

Careful there! Don't mistake MLS for MPLS. Two different animals entirely.
MLS is Multi-Layer Switching and is strictly a LAN technology while MPLS
(Multi-Protocol Label Switching) is predominantly used in the WAN.

Here's some stuff on MPLS.
http://www.convergedigest.com/Bandwidth/archive/010910TUTORIAL-rgallaher1.htm
http://www.mplsrc.com/
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/mpls/mpls_presentations.shtml
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/mpls/mpls_techdoc.shtml

Cisco Networkers 2001 Power session on MPLS:
http://www.cisco.com/networkers/nw01/pres/pr/542/

Also, if you go to http://www.webtorials.com, you'll see a link for "MPLScon
2003 Conference Presentation Handouts". You'll need a Webtorials account but
they're free. The links for creating an account or signing in are up at the
top of the page. This is one of the best places to look since the
information goes into a bit more depth than that on most sites.

Hope this helps,

Karen

RE: Any LANE on CCNP switching [7:72197]

2003-07-13 Thread David Vital
it doesn't seem like anyone wants to commit and possibly tell you not to
worry about LANE when you might have some questions on it in the test. From
everything I have seen on line, in the books I have recently studied and
from the BCMSN class I took last week, I would say NO> I don't think there
are any LANE questions on the 640-604 test.

I passed the BCMSN test, but you can look at the Cisco documentation for
what should be on the test. If you've taken any courses for the CCNP, or
look at the info from Cisco, you will probably see that ATM, and LANE in
specific, is a very small percentage of the material covered, if at all.
So, if there are any questions on your particular test the percentage of
them should be relatively small. You should be able to miss all of them and
still pass, assuming that you get 100% on everything else. I sincerely
doubt that Cisco would include more than 30% of the questions that are
involving LANE...

Re[2]: CCNP ReCert Questions [7:72071]

2003-07-11 Thread Karen E Young
John,

Your best bet is to take either the composite exam or the recert exam. Both
will get you recertified and both are only one exam rather than 4. If you
can wait until the composite exam comes online (August 7th) that one may be
best since it looks like it will recertify both CCNP and CCDP at the same
time. I'm planning on taking the composite myself.

If you do have to do all four test, I'd suggest taking the foundation and
the CIT bt you'll have to be quick since the foundation is being phased out
on September 7th. After that its the composite, BCRAN, and CIT.

Grant,

Correct, you will need to do the CCNA exam againthis should not be
difficult considering the rate at which you have been doing your CCNP :-)

Good Luck...you are not a CCNP despite finishing the 4 courses.

Very strange rule indeed. It must be meant to suit Cisco's Certification
Information System logic.

There is no recert for CCNA - that would make your CCNA inactive and
therefore yes you will have to do the CCNA again.

I got CCNA certification 4 years ago and not take recertification exam yet.
If I pass all the four CCNP exams, do I need to recertificate my CCNA in
order to get the CCNP certification?

Thanks in advance!

I really do hate thinking I will lose it, but with any good luck it
should only be expired for a few weeks. I plan to write the 4 exams
within about a 4-5 week timeframe.
I don't really have enough time to do it for the 21st, unless all I do
is braindump it, but would prefer to go over all the material to
remember what I forgot and go over whatever is new, instead. I figure
this way I'll end up writing BSCI which help in going for any of the
CCIP's. I would have preferred just to write the Composite exam then I
could renew CCNP and CCDP at the same time. But such is life with Cisco
Certs.

Thanks for the IS-IS document.

You shouldn't lose your CCNP, albeit temporarily (hopefully). Think how
hard
you worked to get it. How will you feel when you can no longer say you
have
it? I think you should try the recert exam.

I'm sorry if I scared you by saying it is hard. It is hard, but study
the
IS-IS supplement from Cisco Press and some material on multilayer
switching
and eat a lot of blueberries. At least give it a try.

Here's a link on multilayer switching:

Do you know about the free PDF document that Cisco Press put out on
IS-IS

You shouldn't lose your CCNP, albeit temporarily (hopefully). Think how hard
you worked to get it. How will you feel when you can no longer say you have
it? I think you should try the recert exam.

I'm sorry if I scared you by saying it is hard. It is hard, but study the
IS-IS supplement from Cisco Press and some material on multilayer switching
and eat a lot of blueberries. At least give it a try.

Here's a link on multilayer switching:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121cgcr/switch_c/xcprt5/xcdmsov.htm

Do you know about the free PDF document that Cisco Press put out on IS-IS
for BSCI candidates? When Cisco added IS-IS, Cisco Press didn't have a book
out yet that covered it (from a BSCI viewpoint anyway), so they put out a
PDF. Here's a link:

Hi All

My CCNP expires on the 20th July. Are there deadlines set to re-certify in a
certain time frame that if you do not you have to take the whole 4 exams

Also are there any good books to brush up on things that were not in the CCNP
three years ago ??

Thanks

If you check Cisco's website, you'll see that the old Foundation exam and
both the CCNP recert and the CCDP recert all go offline on September 7th.
The new test (642-891) will replace them and comes online on August 7th.

The current CCNP and CCDP recerts will no longer be offered after September
7th. Just the Composite.

Here's the notice:

2003-07-09 Thread John Cianfarani
Well I decided I wouldn't push it in such a short timeframe with the one
exam. With work and whatever else probably won't have enough time to
study fully for it. So I will write either all 4 again, or cit/bcran
and then the new Composite once it's out.

Anyone know if the Composite will count towards things like CCIP? If it
doesn't I'd just take the 4 exam route.

Thanks
John

Two other problems with Cisco beta exams is that they are often loaded
with errors (meaning you can get an answer right, but not get the
points), and that you don't learn the results for months. In your case,
you'd spend two months not knowing if you're CCNP is valid (I couldn't
handle the pressure if it were me)...

CCNP ReCert Questions [7:72071]

2003-07-09 Thread John Cianfarani
I have to recert my CCNP by the 21st of this month. (yeah I know I left
it late, but I was busy upgrading my CSS1 to CCSP).

I notice they have a new test coming out ( 642-891 ) Called Composite
which is based on BSCI and BCMSN, which will also let you recert your
CCNP and CCDP with at the same time. Now that test doesn't come out
until Aug 7th. Anyone know if there is still a Beta of this exam
available to write? Or if Writing BSCI / BCMSN is equivalent?

Also anyone know a way extended you recert date maybe by writing a
current CCNP exam or something or am I just gonna have to buckle down
and write the 640-851 CCNP Recert exam?

Thanks!
John
