RE: Interface Vlan 'x' is up, line protocol is down [7:73428]
If there are no active ports using vlan 2, the vlan will not show line up.. That's the way most of our devices work, if you don't connect a router interface To something live, you normally get an up/down status as well... Not sure about all logical interface but ATM subintf., vaccess intf, serial subintf, all are calculated as SWIDBs which never gets cleaned internally when deleted or removed by netadmin till it gets reloaded. Now i read somewhere like x25 retry command and backup interface command ... how can i use them can anybody send me the configuration and also will this work on ver 11.3 i tried it on ver11.3 but i think it doesn';t support it Pls suggest something . Usually this is from something at layer 2 or below. Verify that your encapsulations are set the same and that you have good/correct cables. I have had this problem in the past with bad cables connecting an external DSU. Re: Status is up and Line Protocol is down. [7:1508]
"Line protocol is down" could have more to do with your IP schemes. change or reenter ip addressing, verify same subnet. go to global conf. and type IP routing. This may not be your fault so much as it is the routers code. Also, down the interface, bring it back up and wait for 120 seconds. Do a sh ip int brief to verify connectivity. Michael L. Re: Status is up, Line protocol is down [7:1525]
I had the same problem once and it turned out to be the cable. It was not seated 100% into the DTE side and it seemed to be working but the line protocol would not come up. Pull the cable then plug it back in again. Worst case replace the cable! - Original Message - From: "Tariq" To: Sent: Sunday, April 22, 2001 8:46 AM Subject: Status is up, Line protocol is down [7:1525] > Hello Everybody. > > I am getting very strange problem in my home network. > I am getting Status is up and line protocol is down message. > > Please check the attached diagram. Re: Status is up and Line Protocol is down. [7:1508]
Status Line Condition Possible Problem Solution Serial x is up, line protocol is up --- This is the proper status line condition. No action required. Serial x is down, line protocol is down (DTE mode) Typically indicates that the router is not sensing a CD signal (that is, CD is not active). a.. Telephone company problem---Line is down or line is not connected to CSU/DSU b.. Faulty or incorrect cabling c.. Hardware failure (CSU/DSU) Step 1 Check the LEDs on the CSU/DSU to see whether CD is active, or insert a breakout box on the line to check for the CD signal. Step 2 Verify that you are using the proper cable and interface (see your hard- ware installation documentation). Step 3 Insert a breakout box and check all control leads. Step 4 Contact your leased-line or other carrier service to see whether there is a problem. Step 5 Swap faulty parts. Step 6 If you suspect faulty router hardware, change the serial line to another port. If the connection comes up, the previously connected interface has a problem. Serial x is up, line protocol is down (DTE mode) a.. Local or remote router is misconfigured b.. Keepalives are not being sent by remote router c.. Leased-line or other carrier service problem---noisy line, or misconfigured or failed switch d.. Timing problem on cable (SCTE not set on CSU/DSU) e.. Failed local or remote CSU/DSU f.. Router hardware failure (local or remote) Step 1 Put the modem, CSU, or DSU in local loopback mode and use the show interfaces serial command to determine whether the line protocol comes up. If the line protocol comes up, a telephone company problem or a failed remote router is the likely problem. Step 2 If the problem appears to be on the remote end, repeat Step 1 on the remote modem, CSU, or DSU. Step 3 Verify all cabling. Make certain that the cable is attached to the correct interface, the correct CSU/DSU, and the correct telephone company network termination point. Use the show controllers exec command to determine which cable is attached to which interface. Step 4 Enable the debug serial interface exec command. Caution: Because debugging output is assigned high priority in the CPU process, it can render the system unusable. For this reason, use debug commands only to troubleshoot specific problems or during troubleshooting sessions with Cisco technical support staff. Moreover, it is best to use debug commands during periods of lower network traffic and fewer users. Debugging during these periods decreases the likelihood that increased debug command processing overhead will affect system use. Serial x is up, line protocol is down (DTE mode) Step 5 If the line protocol does not come up in local loopback mode and if the output of the debug serial interface exec command shows that the keepalive counter is not incrementing, a router hardware problem is likely. Swap router interface hardware. Step 6 If the line protocol comes up and the keepalive counter increments, the problem is not in the local router. Step 7 If you suspect faulty router hardware, change the serial line to an unused port. If the connection comes up, the previously connected interface has a problem. Serial x is up, line protocol is down (DCE mode) a.. Missing clockrate interface configuration command b.. DTE device does not support or is not set up for SCTE mode (terminal timing) c.. Failed remote CSU or DSU d.. Failed or incorrect cable e.. Router hardware failure Step 1 Add the clockrate interface configuration command on the serial interface. Syntax: clock rate bps Syntax Description: bps---Desired clock rate in bits per second: 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 56000, 64000, 72000, 125000, 148000, 25, 50, 80, 100, 130, 200, 400, or 800. Step 2 Set the DTE device to SCTE mode if possible. If your CSU/DSU does not support SCTE, you might have to disable SCTE on the Cisco router interface. Step 3 Verify that the correct cable is being used. Step 4 If the line protocol is still down, there is a possible hardware failure or cabling problem. Insert a breakout box and observe leads. Step 5 Replace faulty parts as necessary. Serial x is up, line protocol is up (looped) Loop exists in circuit. The sequence number in the keepalive packet changes to a random number when a loop is initially detected
Re: Status is up and Line Protocol is down. [7:1508]
it is a data link issue...forget about the masking. without ip or with ip configed ..if you have the correct cable for bach to back connection. i would only check the clock rate statement on the DCE side and make sure that the cable is good. do s sho contr serial X and check if in fact you have DCE on one side and DTE on the other Tariq wrote: Hello Everybody. RE: Status is Up. Line Protocol is down [7:775]
Okay, what encapsulation are you using? Have you rebooted the routers or reset the interfaces to see if that helps? What IOS versions are you using? I (and someone else on the list) had a problem when connecting using HDLC and an older IOS image on one side and a new image on the other. They just would not play well together. In our situations we had to upgrade from the older image to fix the problem. If that's not it, try running a debug serial interface to see if keepalives are being sent and received correctly. Line protocol will go down if keepalives are being dropped for some reason. Check your keepalives and your encapsulation. Also, you might want to give debug serial interface a try to see if you can get any clues. Line Protocol is Down.
Hi, I'm facing a problem in my router that it shows Line protocol is down but same time serial is up. I tried with loopback on modem, but problem does not solve. But when I try to do these thing with other port then everything goes well. Is this problem of Hardware? or misconfiguration of that port ? Is there any command through which I can remove the configuration of that port ? TIA Gm

Try setting no keepalives on the interface. It will appear to be up even though nothing is plugged in. Re: ethernet is up, line protocol is down
NO you will not be able to ping it. You will not see it in the show ip route command. If you want to bring it up just for testing then you can enter the command "no keepalive" in the interface configuration mode to bring it up but do that for testing only and once its up you can ping it and also see it in the routing table. RG: A PING will not operate here. Since Layer 2 is not functional, no other higher layer functions will operate correctly. Could I do a sh ip route on this ip address and at least try to see it? RG: Showing the routing table will not necessarily yield anything valuable here. Obviously, I can't do it from another router across the interface, but I thought I'd be able to assign an ip address, ping it internally, and have it ready to go when we get something to plug into it. RG: If you just want the interface to come up, I believe you can enter "no keepalive" at the interface config level, which will fool the router into believing the Layer 2 functionality is intact. Re: ethernet is up, line protocol is down
Hmmm... Ping, IP Address - all layer 3 stuff, right? Can't do layer 3 if layer 2 is down... You can do a "no keepalive" on an ethernet interface to bring it up without actually pluggin it into anything. Is that what you are trying to do? Try that and see if you get the results you are looking for. RE: Serial0 is up, line protocol is down!
There can be a lot of reasons for the "Line protocol down" 1. The cable connected from the router may be Bad. 2. The CU is not sending the clock. Check whether all the pins such as DCD, DSR, DTR,RTS,CTS are UP. 3. There should be same config for Keepalive at both the ends. Either no keepalive or keepalive set 4. The encapsulation type should be same at both the ends. 5. The cable is not connected at the remote end. RE: Serial0 is up, line protocol is down!
You're looking for the network layer protocol. It depends on what protocol you're running, i.e. HDLC, PPP, Frame Relay, ATM... In the case of Frame Relay, you can try "debug frame-relay lmi" to get a look at the protocol messages. Look at the "myseq" and "yourseq" parameters and see which one increments. Myseq indicates how many LMI messages your router is sending; yourseq shows how many have been received from the switch. If yourseq isn't incrementing, call your carrier. If myseq isn't incrementing, make sure that you have keepalives turned on (just type "keepalive" at the s0 config prompt). If it doesn't change anything, it's time to call Cisco TAC. -Original Message- From: Omer Shommo [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2000 11:00 PM To: Cisco Group Study Subject: Serial0 is up, line protocol is down! RE: Serial0 is up, line protocol is down!
It could alos be a carrier problem. The way to tell is to loopback your DSU use HDLC or PPP encaps on the interface and ping it. Clear couters before you do this. Do it on both ends, and look for errors etc. If you get good replies on both ends w/o errors the problem is probably not yours (as long as the config on both ends is correct) but the Telc's. This proves good and reliable connectivity between you and you DSU on both ends. -Original Message- From: Joe Quezada [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, June 28, 2000 10:13 AM To: 'Omer Shommo'; 'Cisco Group Study' Subject: RE: Serial0 is up, line protocol is down! It depends on what your serial port is connected to. Is it frame relay, CSU/DSU, etc. > >Hello to All, > >If Serial0 is up, line protocol is down, then what should I check? The line protocol down means that the other end are not sending keepalives . So yes its datalink (correct me if I am wrong ). If you are using back to back is there clocking on your dce side ( do a show control serial 0 ) look for dce . If not check that your NTU (clocking device is plugged in) See that your addressing is correct on both sides . So in short you should have a dce---dte scene and there should be clocking on the dce side. and make sure your addressing is ok ! Hope it helps !
