See: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/cable/cab_rout/cfig_nts/4159 m4tp/4159over.htm On the PA-4T+ Port Adapter you can go up to 8 Mbs on a single serial port. Read the documentation for a complete explanation. Note that you need a 7x00 series router to run this puppy. For the 36x0 series see: This is the NM-4T http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_mod/cis2600/net_m od2/conntser.htm#xtocid621711 The module provides a synchronous data rate of 8 MB/sec on port 0, 4 MB/sec each on port 0 and port 2, or 2 MB on all four ports simultaneously. > -Original Message- > From: Raoní [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 12:00 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Serial Interfaces > > > Hello everyone, > > What serial interfaces can get up to 4 Mbps? > Is it just the HSSI or the regular serial Interfaces work at > that rate? > > TIA, Raoni. > > _ > FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: > http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html > Report misconduct > and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > _ FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

back-to-back serial interfaces
Hi I hate to revisit the old back-to-back serial problem but I think I have a new twist. I've researched the archives including Pamela's excellent March 15 response and can't seem to find anything that fits. I think my problem is slightly different and I would appreciate any insight the group can provide. I'm running two 2500s with a DCE/DTE cable between serial ports. "Show Controller" correctly identifies the DCE and DTE ends. One end is running IOS 11.0(17) and the other end IOS 12.0(9). I can switch cable ends and in either case the router on the DCE end accepts the "Clock Rate" command with no problem. The twist is that the IOS 12 router accepts the "No Shutdown" command and comes up. The 11.0 router accepts the command but the line protocol stays down. The "Show Interface" command identifies identical configurations on both ends including HDLC encapsulation. I'm assuming the difference is the IOS version and I can certainly upgrade. Should I encounter this problem in the field, however, I would like to understand what's going on. Is there an IOS command required in the earlier version that isn't required in 12? Connecting Serial Interfaces [7:5838]
I am trying to set up a serial link between a 2514 and a 2522. I am using the sync/async ports on the 2522. I cannot get the interface to stay up . It works for a few seconds & then too many errors take down the link. I used the physical-layer sync command on the serial ports of the 2522. This does not help. Surprisingly enough, It Depends. CCO claims the command is "clock rate". The online command help claims it is "clock rate". However the command appears in "sh run" as "clockrate" (at least on a 4700 and 7500 using IOS 11.2 - it may vary by platform and IOS for all I know). I think either variation will be accepted when configuring - I don't have a convenient box to test it on at the moment. Re: serial interfaces [7:7089]
You have to remember that when you do a "show run" that the router builds a set of configuration commands that would create the configuration - not necessarily what was typed in. That means that it is very possible that you type in "clock rate" to configure the router and the IOS portion that implements it understands it. But the "show run" part of IOS has been programmed to return "clockrate" when it builds a representation of the configuration. 6 of this or one half dozen of the other - one engineer did it one way and another engineer didn't read his notes.. Re: serial interfaces [7:7089]
I've done a quick check on IOS 11.2 and IOS 12.1 - either "clock rate" or "clockrate" is accepted when configuring the router, although if you use "clockrate" and don't complete the command properly it claims to be an unrecognized command. On both IOS it shows in the configuration as "clockrate". So, it depends what the original question was actually referring to. To configure - use either, although you'll get more online help from "clock rate". In the "show run" output - "clockrate". Officially, for exam purposes - don't know, but my guess would be "clock rate", as that's what's in all the doco. Sometimes I don't seem to be able to ping my own serial interfaces on a router, yet I can ping the remote end.. This often happens on frame relay . In the labs I am working on. I never thought about it 2 much because all the requirments were met. Though now a requirment has come up to make sure you can ping you own serial interface.. Can some tell me what I am doing wrong. I must be leaving something out here.. Kind regards. Paul. -- Sent from my BlackBerry Wireless Handheld This E-mail is from O2. @ least 11.2 should cure this (if you do not have the memory to support 12.0). Cisco would advise you "very quickly" of this, if you were dealing with field apps. I think 11.0(22) is about the oldest I've found that works with the 12.0 (not sure on the 12.1). Version 9.x or not, backwards compatibility has never been a given. I suppose my reaction is a little knee-jerk, being that the bulk of my experience is in large enterprise networks. I can't tell you how many times I've found old routers acting funky- hours or days after a peer upgrade. Last week I had a 4500 with 11.2(9) start with a EIGRP memory leak because it was now communicating with a 7513 upgraded to an RSP4/ 12.1 combination (previously an RSP2 with 11.1). Re: back-to-back serial interfaces
Sorry I forgot to say that the link works just fine with the DCE on the IOS 12.0 end. It doesn't work with the DCE on the IOS 11.0 end. The 12.0 end always comes up and the 11.0 end works just fine as a DTE. Cisco 2610 serial interfaces [7:3370]
Can anyone please shed some light on this - what is the 2 Serial(sync/async) network interface(s) built-in on the Cisco 2610? They look much smaller than the normal Cisco 2500 Serials. What kind of cables do they need? Is it expensive? Thanks. Re: Connecting Serial Interfaces [7:5838]
Just a guess, since they are also async ports they may be restricted to 128k This happened to me in the lab, had clockrate 400 configured and it didn't work. Started to step the clockrate down until - boom - it worked at 128000. I'm not familiar with the sync/async ports but give it a quick try. Re: Connecting Serial Interfaces [7:5838]
The clock speed you have set up on "west"s serial 0 and 1 (which are high speed serials) isn't supported on "north"s serial 2 and 3 (which are low speed sync/async interrfaces) The fastest speed that serial ports 2 thru 9 is 115200. Change your clock speed or use serials 0 and 1 on "north" Tony M. #6172 - Original Message - From: Mark Rose To: Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2001 7:13 PM Subject: Connecting Serial Interfaces [7:5838] > I am trying to set up a serial link between a 2514 and a 2522. There is no serial interface built in Cisco 2600 series. You need to purchase separate module. Smart serial is for WIC-2T. Cisco 2600 also support WIC-IT, DB60. Expensive than DB60. 2610 has only console and auxiliary ports built in, other than the single ethernet port. Are you sure you didn't get a 2610 with a module already installed? F-T1 Serial Interfaces, configuring [7:5139]
Anyone know off the top of thier head if it's possible to configure F-t1 interfaces back to back? I have a "cross-over" cable where I hook up the TX from one end to the RX of the other and vice verse, but this is unlike High speed serial interfaces where you set a clock rate on one side, drop a couple addresses, throw up HDLC encapsulation and you are off and running. Re: F-T1 Serial Interfaces, configuring [7:5139]
I'm using the 4-wire 56K CSU's, rather than the T1's, but otherwise the same. The T1's give you slightly more options (encoding, timeslots, etc). I'm also simply using a Cisco rollover cable (same cable you use for Console port). It works great. > I doing it with a pair of wic-1dsu-t1. Re: Possibility for Etherchannel on Serial Interfaces [7:16517]
No etherchannel, but many other different ways like: MLPPP CEF per packet load balancing Regular per session or per packet load balancing. Do a search at "cisco.google.com/cisco" for examples and limitations. Usually I would find the links for ya but it's late and I am going to bed. Also check the groupstudy archives. Serial link load balancing has come up a lot in the last 6 months. slow ping response to ethernet hosts but not serial interfaces
Hi, I'm having trouble of identify what's wrong when I'm pinging a host on a small network. I'm getting an average of 150ms of response time. The WAN link is 2MB microwave and not being utilised at this stage. Pinging the serial interfaces give me average of 2ms only. Even when I'm pinging the f0/0 of the router, I'm getting the same response as pinging a host on the same network. I already make sure fast switching is enable (default anyway) and the two routers are 2620 and 3620 with very low utilisation. Any suggestions ? Followup To WFQ on High Speed Serial Interfaces [7:35558]
Thanks again to those who commented on my "WFQ on high speed (16 Mbps HSSI) serial interfaces" discussion. I was concerned that this might be a burden on the processor and leave the queue depth too shallow. I was finally able to get my hands on the routers yesterday. Changing the interface back to FIFO shaved 3 or 4 % off the processor load. It would likely have been more, but the router had just the one flow to manage. Since the traffic wasn't the least bit bursty, the shallow queue (64 message congestive discard) didn't seem to matter much either. The throughput issue seems to be one of "bandwidth-delay product." This was an issue in my satcom days where the delay in getting acknowledgements back caused the transmitter to sit and wait. That also now can be the case with modern day wideband pipes (over 10 Mbps sustained tcp throughput in our case) combined with moderate terrestrial delays (about 55 msec in our case). We were able to support our mathematical model that showed we had just a few too many kbytes on the wire for the max tcp window size by splitting the load across two different sockets. Viola! Throughput full speed ahead. RE: Serial Interfaces disappear on a Cisco 2500 [7:36968]
If I'm reading this correctly, I am quite frankly stunned beyond beleif that that box is running at all. It appears that you have the Cisco IGS software loaded on a 2503. I beleive the IGS never had a option for 2 serials. There were only 3 model; 2E, 1E 1S, and Token Ring. So how you are getting what you are getting is beyond me. I recommend getting a good version of the IOS for the 2503 (this will probably involve purchasing SmartNet for this box) and reflash it. Re: Serial Interfaces disappear on a Cisco 2500 [7:36968]
Look at the second line of the output below. It appears that you have 3000 series software on a 2500. I don't even know what a 3000 router is! Then again, even your boot ROMs say they are for a 3000. Hmm I have no idea what the deal is there. If I were you I'd upgrade the DRAM and flash and then do an IOS upgrade, if possible. His IOS is correct for the box: Let's put a little padding in - then post the URL. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/620/5.shtml#identifiers Good chance the serial ports are toast. The 'G' feature definition (as in IGS-'G'-L) means ISDN subset, which doesn't support the serial ports. All he needs to do is put in a normal (non-'G') image, and they'll work just fine. Re: Connecting two Routers through their Serial Interfaces [7:16251]
Yes it is possible You will have to set the clock rate on one router and the bandwidth rate on both, you can do this through hyper terminal. Once your logged in; type "en" for enable configuration from there use the "?" to bring up help menus ! the command for entering the serial interface once in the enable mode will be something like; int s0 (or s1 depending on which serial port) Good Luck, Bryan ""Hamid"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > Hi group, > > Can anyone tell me if it's possible if you want to connect two routers > Bach-to Back using their serial interfaces. > > And if possible how should I configure the serial inetrfaces. > > Thanks in advace > > Hamid Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=16251&t=16251 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: slow ping response to ethernet hosts but not serial interfaces
Try to tracert before and after you ping a host on the WAN. I don't know how you're setup but if the ping is activiting the WAN link and the WAN routes have lower admin cost then your traffic may be taking a circuitous route through the WAN to reach the hosts.
