line protocol down
I have this problem with my 2503. The line protocol goes down consistently. If I reset the modem (CSU/DSU) or reload the router, the line protocol comes up. And then it goes down after few minutes/hours and history repeats. I couldn't nail down the problem. Any clues? Thanks, Rayappa. RE: line protocol down
hi all , With regard to my problem.I was troubleshooting this morning and the problem is still with their receive. I first disabled LMI and had him do the same on his router along with no keepalives. The PVC came back up from the perspective of the frame relay switch (with LMI enabled it was down). I send 100 packets to him, he doesn't receive them on the router PVC stats. I show the packets traversing our frame relay network with zero discards or errors. He sends me 100 packets, I show 100 packets coming into our network. any comments Jason -Original Message- From: Erick B. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2000 2:47 PM To: Yee, Jason; cisco@groupstudy. com (E-mail) Subject: Re: line protocol down Hi, First of all, your serial interface has input errors and CRC errors. You have sent LMI but haven't received any LMI probably due to these input errors and CRC's. I would check the circuit and CSU config. Once you get the line issues sorted out, heres how to troubleshoot frame based on the output you gave. Your DLCI 659 is DELETED which is assigned to your sub interface. Note, it was active when the interface was first brought up for a short time. This is normal on Cisco routers. The DLCIs are marked as active when interface is first brought up until LMI is received or not. Do a 'show frame pvc' and see what DLCIs your learning from the provider's frame switch if you are. Your LMI type is ANSI, is this correct? You can do a 'debug frame lmi' to see LMI packets. LMI is the management protocol where your DLCIs are learned, status of them, etc. It has to match that of switch. In the debug output, you will get at least 2-3 lines for each LMI poll (plus one more for each PVC, DLCI). The PVC/DLCI lines in 'debug frame lmi' begin with PVC ... and in middle will have dlci ##. If you don't see PVC lines in debug output your not learning any DLCIs and theres a issue w/the configuration of the providers switch/frame mapping to you, LMI mis-match, or a line problem. You can switch the LMI-type see if anything changes as well (while your waiting for provider to callback). If debug frame lmi looks good, then do a 'show frame map' to see what inverse-arp is picking for remote address's since your not staticly mapping them with a frame map statement. What does 'show frame lmi' show for input/output (bottom 2 lines of output). Re: line protocol down(???)
Jay, Are you sure it's not his configuration??? Your config looks ok...??? I know this was probably asked but is your line going out to a telco provider? If so it looks like this could be a routing issue. If he can get to you but you cant get to him then it looks like there's something wrong with his side, or blocking you somehow. Did this just all of a sudden happen out of nowhere or is this something that you just set up??? His DLCI mapping commands may be a little screwy...just a though, well...a couple ;) Mark Zabludovsky ~ CCNA, CCDA, 1/4-NP [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved." ~William Jennings Bryan~ **NOTE: New CCNA/CCDA List has been formed. Re: line protocol down
What the hell is turfing? Maybe I am stupid but I have never heard this term before. I am a firm believer in everyone having the right to say whatever he or she pleases. One cannot please everyone and anything someone says that is slightly controversial is bound to offend a bunch of people on this list. Too bad is what I say. If you don't like what someone has to say waaah waaah tough crap. Line protocol down (looped)
Groupstudy list Gurus I am having some serious trouble setting up my 2522 router as a frame switch. I am using the frame relay hub and spoke example Lab #13 from the All-in-one CCIE lab study guide. I am entering the commands just like in the book, but I one of the spoke interfaces comes up for a short time, and then goes down. When I show int I get Serial0 is up, line protocol is down (looped). Not many clues given though but from what you say it seems logical that you should check the status of your serial interface see if there are many input errors or crc errors if there are check the clock rate of your modem otherwise check the status of the other party that you are connected to to see if they were down however you can also confirm that your interface port is ok but putting keepalives equal to 0 to see that the status is up up suaveguru --- Rayappa Mayakunthala <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I have this problem with my 2503. Which make of csu/dsu(modem) u r using for this ?? most of the times the line protocol will not come up due to clocking problem on the modem or tooo many errors on the line ... I had this problem when connecting two of our offices with 2 wire modem(RAD Make) . and we found there are lots of errors on line provided by local telco . It was fixed by telco by using different pairs then line protocol came up . so I suggest u first check the line ( test with Bert Tester)and then modem settings . Re: line protocol down
One of the things your carrier may require is the type after your DLCI number. Contact your carrier and they will tell you what it should be. Do you have external CSU's or using internal on the router? For example: interface Serial1.1 point-to-point frame-relay interface-dlci 659 IETF Your bgp config isn't going to work either. It's missing a few lines. Are you planning on running BGP? If so, let me know and we can work on that problem next. Re: line protocol down
Hi, First of all, your serial interface has input errors and CRC errors. RE: line protocol down
Well, I took a real quick glance but here are a few questions for you that may help you out: 1) Why have you selected the IETF encapuslation type? Are you dealing with Cisco and some other vendor? 2) As far as the Up-Down situation, have you verified the source of network clocking? What type of router-csu/dsu combination is in place? I would check the source of clocking again verify whether or not there is an issue with the settings on your csu/dsu. > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of > Yee, Jason > Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2000 12:56 AM > To: cisco@groupstudy. com (E-mail) > Subject: line protocol down > > > > hi , > > I have problems with my frame-relay serial link attatched is the router > configuration > > physical layer confirmed is ok as carrier is up but my serial interface > still showing interface up line protocol down > > Any inputs will be greatly appreciated > > > thanks > > Jason > > **NOTE: New CCNA/CCDA List has been formed. Are you using a frame relay simulator, or is this a connection to the telco? If this is a frame lab you have at home post the config of the router at the other end of this link. The details of the frame switch would be helpful too. >From: "Yee, Jason" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: "Yee, Jason" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: "cisco@groupstudy. com (E-mail)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: line protocol down >Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 00:55:57 -0500 > > >hi , > >I have problems with my frame-relay serial link attatched is the router >configuration > >physical layer confirmed is ok as carrier is up but my serial interface >still showing interface up line protocol down > >Any inputs will be greatly appreciated > > >thanks > >Jason > ><< routerconf.txt >> _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. vlan line protocol down [7:39409]
Hi, I just got a 2950 switch yesterday and start to play with it. After sometime, I set the ip and going to ping it, but no respond. Check the ip interface, the line protocol is down: Vlan1 is up, line protocol is down Internet address is 172.28.32.107/25 Broadcast address is 255.255.255.255 Address determined by setup command MTU is 1500 bytes . RE: vlan line protocol down [7:39409]
Without any experience with this Switch, I can only guess at this possibility: Did you program the VLAN config from a console port?? If so, Do you have anything plugged into ANY of the FastEthernet ports?? If not, try plugging a workstation, laptop, or whatever type of node that suits your fancy, and then go back to your terminal program to see if you get anything. Better yet, if you're programming IP addresses on a VLAN specifically, perhaps you should first connect the switch to a router and configure trunking to support Sub-interface VLAN routing. I bet that this is actually what your issue is. If you want to assign an IP address to the switch to ping it or telnet to it, try assigning the IP address to one of the Ethernet Interfaces. that is... Dear Mark, Thanks so much! Your solution works: >If not, try plugging a workstation, laptop, or whatever type of node that >suits your fancy, and then go back to your terminal program to see if you >get anything. The problem is that I need to plug-in a work station to a port with that vlan assigned. After plugin, I can ping myself from the console. I never think of such a design on 2950 since I have another band new 3548XL, without plug-in any workstation, it can ping itself. Thanks again for your help and quick respond~ Sammy. Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
1) I guess you enable the fastethernet port in the running configuration. You have to shutdown the port, so the port will administrative shut down and line protocol down. 2)Line protocol will up if there is any phyiscal connection attached to Fastethernet. Becasue the port in your router will detect keepalive signal, when it detected, it will up.You can type no keepalive under interface configuration, the ethernet interface will keep up even no physical connection. You have to enable the interface, of courese. Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
I don't think it's just Fast Ethernet. I've seen "Slow" Ethernet report that the interface is up, down when nothing was attached. It seems to just be an indication that the interface passed a hardware check. Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
if it's true..that's a good indicator for hardware health checkup. another Q, if we set the FE to be full-duplex, does it mean we get 100meg for tx and 100meg for rx, so total 200meg for a connection...? - Original Message - From: "Priscilla Oppenheimer" To: Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2001 9:07 AM Subject: Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828] > I don't think it's just Fast Ethernet. Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
hey! somebody gets it! Thanks Priscilla: It always bothers me that full-duplex is refereed to as 200 meg. The server folks always think that all their performance issues will go away when they go to "full-duplex". Sure, no collision, but considering the unbalanced nature of client/server traffic it doesn't make that big of a throughput difference. I'm surprised that my T1's are not referred to as 3 mbps links. They are full-duplex too :-> DaveC Oppenheimer wrote: > > At 12:23 AM 4/26/01, md. nazri wrote: > >if it's true..that's a good indicator for hardware health checkup. > >another Q, if we set the FE to be full-duplex, does it mean we get 100meg > >for tx and 100meg for rx, so total 200meg for a connection...? > > Each of the two stations on a point-to-point FE full-duplex link get > dedicated 100 Mbps bandwidth for transmitting. I tried to do some more research on this and couldn't get a good answer. Does anyone know exactly in which cases the router reports the interface up, down even if there is no cable attached? Looking at show interface ethernet, Router reports up, down with no cable for AUI. How about RJ45? How about MII? GMII? Others? Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
Found some info: Interface is UP: means the routers ethernet hardware has been activated. Line Protocol Down: The router never sees any of the keepalives that it sends out. YES: you'll get the same thing with RJ45... http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/itg_v1/tr1904.htm Search for: "show interfaces ethernet Field Descriptions" it'll explain in a little more detail. Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
Hi, True!! Only 100Meg in and 100Meg out but on a 100Meg Half duplex connection at best you get less than 50Meg. You must listen to your own signal anything over 50% in one direction is pure rubbish. In reality over 30% of the specified bandwidth you are probably already retransmitting heaps. I therefore disagree that there is no significant difference in network performance. However, the ability of the server and or the network cards ability to pull data off the network and deliver it to the server is a different matter. A good example is from back in the old days with an 8bit 10Meg Half duplex card into a I386 a real speed of 280K was more the reality. Just some thoughts. Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
Hi, On an ethernet the router will say it is admin up and connection down when nothing is seen at the end. This is common on most devices Cisco and non Cisco. Most SNMP managed devices show this. It is a way of knowing the service is avalable for use. In the Hub (repeater) days it was possible to turn ports on and off even as a security arrangement (run different configs for different times) This saves a lot of errors on SNMP as you can tell the difference in the states easily. Just some thoughts. (I think the up down is always the case if the link is not there) Teunis, Hobart, Tasmania Australia On Thursday, April 26, 2001 at 05:47:34 PM, Priscilla Oppenheimer wrote: > I tried to do some more research on this and couldn't get a good answer. > > Does anyone know exactly in which cases the router reports the interface > up, down even if there is no cable attached? Priscilla, that's a fascinating report - I don't suppose you know of any more recent work along the same lines? I was interested to note that maximum throughput happens with two hosts. Gee whiz! A switch connection :-) JMcL -- Forwarded by Jenny Mcleod/NSO/CSDA on 27/04/2001 04:12 pm --- "Priscilla Oppenheimer" @groupstudy.com on 27/04/2001 11:18:45 am Please respond to "Priscilla Oppenheimer" Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject: Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828] At 07:08 PM 4/26/01, Tony van Ree wrote: >Hi, > >True!! Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828]
Sorry if it sounded like I was guessing.. :-} Played with issue again last night. Every time that I have seen UP/Down the cable was detached etc. We install/move/remove a lot of equipment and it is always up/down... The line protocol is dependent on the keepalives. Just try a "no keep" on the interface and UP/UP it will go. Ran tests on: 2500 AUI 2600 10M RJ45 (half & full duplex) 3600 10M RJ45 (half & full duplex) 4500 100M RJ45 & MII(half & full duplex) 7200 10M RJ45 (half & full duplex) 7200 100M RJ45 (half & full duplex) 7200 100M MII (Believe I did this too but can not remember) unfortunately the 7500s with Gig & FE MMF ports are being used for spare parts @tt. In all cases if keepalives are disabled, the line protocol is up. If not up/down. Sniffer shows the keepalive frames as having the same source and destination mac address. Ethernet type 9000 "LOOP" frame. I would like to attach the interfaces to the switch, and filter keepalives out. Maybe [set port protocol slot/mod group off]. I doubt if that will work, but will try and find out. PS: it is a nice document & so is the digital research paper. I'm not concerned about the line protocol. I'm not asking about the second result or keepalives. My routers have an AUI interface. Cisco says the interface is up even when there is no cable attached. I don't have a router with an RJ-45 interface, MII, GMII, etc. (lame, I know! ;-) Do you? Could you check? Does it say up even if there is no cable attached? The original poster said that his FE says up, down with no cable attached. Which kind of interface was it? Just trying to document this with more exact details than Cisco documentation. It seems to me that with some types of interfaces, it should or could be smarter. Perhaps it's consistent across interfaces and that's why I haven't gotten an answer, but I am still searching. Not getting a real answer is making me down, down. Each of the two stations on a point-to-point FE full-duplex link get dedicated 100 Mbps bandwidth for transmitting. One station's transmit medium is the other's receive medium. Some people call this 200 Mbps. In actuality most traffic types don't take advantage of this. >- Original Message - >From: "Priscilla Oppenheimer" >To: >Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2001 9:07 AM >Subject: Re: FastEthernet is up, Line protocol down [7:1828] > > > > I don't think it's just Fast Ethernet. Thanks for the Archives (was to be-E0 line protocol down)
Thank you for the archives. I was just playing with my new 2501 and was having a problem with the line protocol being down. Looked through my books, looked on Cisco's site, couldn't find the answer (I'm sure it's on Cisco's site I just couldn't find it). Wrote a message asking for help, but before sending, I remembered the archives. Can't ask for help without trying there, can I? Searched on 'line protocol down' and found my answer in about the fourth message I viewed. 'no keepalives'. Doh! So this message is just a thank you and a reminder to check the archives before posting for help, the answer may already be in there.
