[CGUYS] AVG free update attack?

2010-03-15 Thread John Emmerling
I have installed AVG free on my computer and my wife's computer.

Several days ago, I saw a prompt similar to what you see when Windows
installs a critical update, saying that I had received an update and
would need to restart the computer to complete installation. The
prompt had an AVG logo, so I went ahead and clicked OK.

Within the subsequent time frame (without necessarily inferring
causality) I have started to experience random hang ups unlike
anything I've seen before. Sometimes the login page itself freezes
(so that it doesn't respond to a user prompt). Sometimes login works
but it never gets to the desktop (it freezes at the personal
settings message). Sometimes I can log all the way in and use
applications, then unpredictably it will freeze at a later time. When
it freezes, I can still move the mouse cursor, and some desktop
widgets seem to respond to an extent, but it is impossible to bring up
the task manager, so I can't look for suspicious processes.

My wife apparently got the same sort of prompt (although she doesn't
specifically recall seeing the AVG logo), but her computer seems
unaffected.

Does anybody know if the AVG update prompt was legitimate? It seems
to me that if this was an actual attack, work would have spread by now
(I haven't heard anything about it). I am suspicious because I
haven't experienced AVG presenting this type of prompt in the past,
that I can recall.

No argument, but in this case, do you think the update was
legitimate (actually originating with AVG, etc.)?

Dunno. That is sometimes the question one is left with after an auto-update.

I got that msg. I didn't restart immediately, but turned off the

had no trouble with anything since.

Must admit I don't get restart notices very often from AVG, since
moving up to Win7. I used to get them all the time on XP.

[CGUYS] AVG found Touchstone Software driveragent_488.exe

2009-05-19 Thread Richard P.
AVG found Touchstone Software driveragent_488.exe during today's scan.
It found it in a junk file where I put all of the programs that came
with the computer that I don't intend on using. It also found it in an
Application Data folder. AVG says it is a Trojan horse SHeur2.AGFP

Does anyone know if this is a false positive or is it something to get rid of?

Thanks in advance.

False positive. It's a utility that's supposed to scan your drivers and
download updates if necessary. Never used it, so I don't know if it's any

[CGUYS] AVG updates.

2009-02-04 Thread katan
At the risk of turning this list into a computer discussion list, I
have a question about AVG updates.

Mine doesn't. I've got three computers (one dual booting XP/Win7) with
AVG and all set to auto-update, and they've all been failing
(Connection failed). It shouldn't be my Internet connection, because
they're at two different locations (the dual boot at both).

I just tried to manually update and it was crawling along at 25-30
*bytes* per second before it failed. Minutes later iTunes was updating
at about 1MB/sec.

Is it just me?

I have AVG (free) running on two win xp computers. What seems to happen

when I click manual update it updates fine. I've just chalked it up to a

You may have DNS problems. Have you tried switching to OpenDNS or is you
already are switch to yur IPS's DNS.

Have you been hacking your hosts file? That could break things.

Could be that your software is pointed at a server that is having
trouble. That would be internally stored information. Have you tried
downloading a fresh copy and reinstalling?

Actually, I subsequently did a manual update that sailed through (prior
to the DNS switch). It's inconsistent.

I think I need to reinstall AVG on the XP half of my dual boot anyway.
Auto updates don't want to stick. No matter how many times I turn it
on, it keeps turning off. I even used TrendMicro's online virus scanner
to see if there was a virus turning it off.

AVG Free 8.x does have an Anti-Spyware component with its Anti-Virus. I
don't don't how comprehensive it is as I supplement my system with
Webroot's Spy Sweeper. I do know that AVG 8.x scans for and finds a lot
more things than 7.x.

This is a common misconception based on AVG trying to (understandably) drive
people to their paid version. You can still d/l and use the new, free
version at the same website as ever: free.grisosft.com

After reading this thread, wondering if AVG might be what is slowing
 down my
browsing, mainly on FireFox, but probably also some on IE?

I haven't noticed anything like that. The new version inserts security
ratings after every Google search result, but it's as quick as ever.

Re: [CGUYS] AVG dissatisfaction

2008-06-04 Thread Brian Jones

I have not had AVG8 reboot my computer since I installed it last month.
Change your settings... have AVG scan at the end of the day, not on reboot.

DON'T reboot when it asks. Finish your work and then reboot when you go to
lunch.
A greyed out AVG icon just means that the latest version is not yet
installed... you are still protected from over 100,000 viruses and worms!
Your ISP is likely scanning your incomming email for viruses, so your risk
is very small.

That sounds like McAfee's Site Advisor. It's a plug-in for IE and FF
(and I presume other browsers) that rates a page. McAfee has a free
version and of course, a paid-for version.

What I like about Site Advisor is the more info link presenting a
detailed report explaining why the site is being rated poorly. For
example, they will subscribe to the site using a honey-pot address and
then monitor what happens. If they get a lot of spam, they report it.
They scan downloads for malware. They follow links and downgrade sites
that link to sites with poor ratings. Etc.

New info about AVG 8.0: It does come with a neat feature which rates

I have. Nothing found, so nothing to report.

You have to invoke a scan manually and check for updates, though it doesn't
seem as there have been any in the past year or so.

Take a look at Threatfire (free): http://www.threatfire.com/ It looks to
be a better product for blocking rootkits and the like.

In going back and checking the logs I saw that yesterday, AVG also found
what it says was a Trojan horse in:
C:\Program Files\music_now\inetchk.exe and deleted it. I was able to
search and see that MusicNow is part of AOL (I never installed AOL but
is probably sitting on the computer as part of a preloaded program). If
it has to do with AOL, it probably would be seen as a hazard but I'm
just guessing.

I don't know how AVG does it's detection process.

Richard P.

Does AVG detect virus based on a heuristic model where it finds Virus
like behaviors. It may not know which virus it is but it knows it is
acting like a virus.

I believe that NOD32 and Blink find things this way as well as by definitions.
