[CGUYS] AVG free update attack?
I have installed AVG free on my computer and my wife's computer. Several days ago, I saw a prompt similar to what you see when Windows installs a critical update, saying that I had received an update and would need to restart the computer to complete installation. The prompt had an AVG logo, so I went ahead and clicked OK. Within the subsequent time frame (without necessarily inferring causality) I have started to experience random hang ups unlike anything I've seen before. Sometimes the login page itself freezes (so that it doesn't respond to a user prompt). Sometimes login works but it never gets to the desktop (it freezes at the personal settings message). Sometimes I can log all the way in and use applications, then unpredictably it will freeze at a later time. When it freezes, I can still move the mouse cursor, and some desktop widgets seem to respond to an extent, but it is impossible to bring up the task manager, so I can't look for suspicious processes. My wife apparently got the same sort of prompt (although she doesn't specifically recall seeing the AVG logo), but her computer seems unaffected. Does anybody know if the AVG update prompt was legitimate? It seems to me that if this was an actual attack, work would have spread by now (I haven't heard anything about it). I am suspicious because I haven't experienced AVG presenting this type of prompt in the past, that I can recall. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Who knows. These days I use and recommend MS Security Essentials. It too has to update occasionally, but it's nowhere near as annoying as any of the other free AVs that try to use the occasion for advertising. Upgrade to the new version and it has a pleasant voice, plus the registration is easy, right in the program, no longer need to go to web and have them email you number. [CGUYS] AVG updates.
At the risk of turning this list into a computer discussion list, I have a question about AVG updates. Mine doesn't. I've got three computers (one dual booting XP/Win7) with AVG and all set to auto-update, and they've all been failing (Connection failed). It shouldn't be my Internet connection, because they're at two different locations (the dual boot at both). I just tried to manually update and it was crawling along at 25-30 *bytes* per second before it failed. Minutes later iTunes was updating at about 1MB/sec. I have AVG (free) running on two win xp computers. What seems to happen regularly on my systems is that AVG attempts to update and fails. Then when I click manual update it updates fine. I've just chalked it up to a quirk in the program, it is free after all. I have a question about AVG updates. Mine doesn't. Now the MS has vanquished the last computer virus there is no need for updates. Mine doesn't. Have you tried switching to OpenDNS or is you already are switch to yur IPS's DNS. Have you been hacking your hosts file? That could break things. Could be that your software is pointed at a server that is having trouble. That would be internally stored information. Actually, I subsequently did a manual update that sailed through (prior to the DNS switch). It's inconsistent. I think I need to reinstall AVG on the XP half of my dual boot anyway. Re: [CGUYS] AVG dissatisfaction
I have not had AVG8 reboot my computer since I installed it last month. Change your settings... have AVG scan at the end of the day, not on reboot. DON'T reboot when it asks. Finish your work and then reboot when you go to lunch. A greyed out AVG icon just means that the latest version is not yet installed... you are still protected from over 100,000 viruses and worms! Your ISP is likely scanning your incomming email for viruses, so your risk is very small. - Original Message - From: Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [CGUYS] AVG dissatisfaction * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Three apps may deal with things better than one swiss army program. I have all three on a swiss army knife but I would rather own a screwdriver, a kitchen knife and a can opener. Re: [CGUYS] AVG
That sounds like McAfee's Site Advisor. It's a plug-in for IE and FF (and I presume other browsers) that rates a page. McAfee has a free version and of course, a paid-for version. What I like about Site Advisor is the more info link presenting a detailed report explaining why the site is being rated poorly. For example, they will subscribe to the site using a honey-pot address and then monitor what happens. If they get a lot of spam, they report it. They scan downloads for malware. They follow links and downgrade sites that link to sites with poor ratings. Etc. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

My In-laws are getting a popup message from AVG that 7.5 is going obsolete and they should update to 8.0 (which of course is for pay). Any reason they can't keep using the free version? Should they download the latest version of whatever's free? -PJM Checkout One Laptop Per Child project laptop.org * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

The links they provide tend to steer you toward the pay product but you can find the free version if you dig around a bit. I upgraded this afternoon. While I don't mind using Yahoo as a search engine, with this new version, I have yet to find a way to delete its search history. I ended up modifying the installation to lose the toolbars and just keep AVG. For them, just un-check it during the setup. Here's a direct link: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe Richard P. Like we NEED toolbars??? Thanks for the warning. I've still not gotten a pop-up warning from AVG. I assume I will at some point. Either that or I'll find out when it won't download virus updates. Re: [CGUYS] AVG
New info about AVG 8.0: It does come with a neat feature which rates webpages generated by search engines as to their safety rating (doesn't work with their installed Yahoo toolbar though). Not sure how they come up with this or how accurate it is, but it does present a certain comfort level when guessing at whether one should click or not. Richard P. Have them upgrade to AVG Free 8.0. Re: [CGUYS] AVG Anti-Rootkit
I have. Nothing found, so nothing to report. You have to invoke a scan manually and check for updates, though it doesn't seem as there have been any in the past year or so. Take a look at Threatfire (free): http://www.threatfire.com/ It looks to be a better product for blocking rootkits and the like. -Original Message- Has anyone tried out AVG's Anti-Rootkit tool? Re: [CGUYS] AVG Trojan Detected?
After looking into it, I see that AVG uses virus signatures as well as Heuristic Analysis. All definitions are up to date and have been updated daily and scans done daily since computer was new. Richard P. Mike Sloane wrote: To my knowledge, Panda is heuristic, but AVG depends on daily downloads of specific virus signatures. Re: [CGUYS] AVG Trojan Detected?
In going back and checking the logs I saw that yesterday, AVG also found what it says was a Trojan horse in: C:\Program Files\music_now\inetchk.exe and deleted it. I was able to search and see that MusicNow is part of AOL (I never installed AOL but is probably sitting on the computer as part of a preloaded program). If it has to do with AOL, it probably would be seen as a hazard but I'm just guessing. I don't know how AVG does it's detection process. Richard P. Does AVG detect virus based on a heuristic model where it finds Virus like behaviors. It may not know which virus it is but it knows it is acting like a virus. I believe that NOD32 and Blink find things this way as well as by definitions. wrote: This morning, AVG scan found what it says is a trojan horse downloader. Run all the free online virus checkers you can find. http://www.google.com/search?source=ighl=enrlz=q=free+online+virus Call me paranoid, but at least once I've just reinstalled Windows rather than deal with possible trojans.
