Yes. Lilo/syslinux patches are based on vesa-1.2 and are real
mode code. Kernel going framebuffer is based on vesa-2.0 (linear
 framebuffer).

Sure, you have found !
Lilo is self-installed in text mode.
After the first install I have found grub by default.

I hope a line in Errata ?
Lilo should be pached in the future or are they hardware which don't
understand vesa-2.0 ? In this case, is a detection possible ?

Well why not but I don't understand what was the problem. Can you
propose an errata maybe? Please submit it in the form of the
 other erratas (error scenario/why/solution).

I suggest this (my english is very poor, please, do corrections) :

iError scenario:/i
bShuttle SK41G : First screen of install shows horizontal stripes./b

briWhy:/i
Hardware not compliant with old vesa-1.2 used by LILO.

briSolution:/i
Don't worry ! Press Enter to continue (install or update from CD) or F1 for
other modes.

Once again, our patch to lilo and syslinux use vesa-1.2 calls (in
real mode assembly). This is typically *more* compatible than
 vesa-2.0 and linear framebuffer.

Yes, but it does't work at all !

These two wires re-inforce the shadow-mask ( not the screen :). Without them

Aperture grills have one significant problem and this is what causes the
horizontal lines you see. To maintain equal spacing between the vertical
wires, the aperture grill has two (one on displays 14 inches or smaller)
horizontal damper wires, which hold the vertical wires in place. These wires
cast a faint shadow on the phosphor layer that is not normally noticeable,
but when you have an image or application with a light background displayed

 Hello !

I have some wishes for the Mandrake 10.0...

First of all, is it possible to include in the Mandrake Controle Center a
module for Bittorrent ? This module ask the user where to save the files,
his login and password of mandrake club and that's all, the download start.
This module can verify the presence of a proxy or a firewall, configure
shorewall and give some advices to the user. I think the newbies will be
happy with this ! No more FAQ or problem of python dependencies... You
could use this system to download Beta or RC when we are in Beta or RC
 period.

Good idea, but is this necessary ? From Mandrake Club, the link
https://www.mandrakeclub.com/torrent.php?f_=x.torrent calls Bittorrent.

Bittorrent-shadowsclient is very nice and should replace the old version.
Some features should be include:
- a link to http://torrent.mandrakesoft.com:6969/
- an indication about the overall requested download bandwith and the
available upload bandwith.
- a message or a vu-meter to show the balance between upload and download.
When download is over, ask for don't stop upload.

My fourth wish is perhaps a detail but is it possible to have an option to
synchronize the time with a NTP regularly in the date and time module of
MCC ? (in fact use a ntp command with cron or at internet connection).

Never call a ntp server with cron! This is the best way to overload a ntp
server if several people do that.
Instead, use ntpd which is provided to call the server when needed and
does the best drift compensation for local clocks. The first aim of ntpd is
to make your time accurate, which is absolutely necessary to become a
server... if needed.

PS: Raaah ! I speak english like Babelfish !
I so! But we are not alone ;-)

No! Even for a single computer ntpd is the _*best*_ solution.
It is very light, generate a very low traffic, gives always and accurate time
and is able to do this with a laptop or a PC on line now and then.
Ntpdate is useful only when you buy your PC or when you change the battery

excuse me, but most people will test during RC period, but the problem
was you release ... how many ... 2 RC ! after RC2 there were many bugs
remaining to fix, and some people could not install RC2 on their
computer. When i could see that some people were beginning to install
RC2, they had many problems with screensavers, etc ...
Yesterday I contact konica because I had a problem with a printer. The
technician in order to test the printer under linux as I was using mdk
 install ... RC2 ( yes that's the last one available ).

As the overall time can't be expanded, it could be better to have 2 beta
and 3 RC instead of 3 beta and 2RC.
As people use to test only RC, this is a way to get a best bug report.

Have you have a look at RC of OO.org ? You were able to release a RC
with mdk 9.2 because there was practically no differences between the
final RC and the final version.

OOo did five RC which were truely Release Candidate.
However OOo is far less complicated as a full distro.

sadly designers and graphists have to use photoshop because:
 - they're not computer scientist are almost used with photoshop
 - they need cjk color system.

Yes I know that. André Pascual http://www.linuxgraphic.org told me that CMYK

Pantone is the Microsoft of inks: http://www.pantone.com/
The market is locked, absolutely unfree.

I'm trying to say it makes more difference who you share with rather than
all this other garbage. If there are others sharing nicely you get good
downloads if they limit their upload to really small amounts and dont leave
the torrent open when it's done then you get bad speeds.

But really this is to say thank you to those who shared. BY the way when
that happens with the same network settings on my firewall I get about 20k
down and 20k up. It's the people that make the difference.

I use bittorrent-shadowsclient-5.8.4-1mdk.noarch.rpm which allows to see the
torrents working. (Advanced). Perhaps can you see my PC : 82.65.11.65 (now).
I upload only for 3 days and I have uploaded twice more than I downloaded.
I can upload only at 13 kiB/s but this is better than nothing. Little torrents
make great rivers!

http://torrent.mandrakesoft.com:6969/ shows the state : few people upload when
download is finished. It will be necessary to make a campaign to explain this
before the next time.

i always get speeds of like 6k and below for about the first week. Now
after a few days I'm getting it at like 50k a second and will have the last
50% downloaded in just about 6 hours. That is compared to about 4 or 5 days
to get the first 50%. I have not changed any config options at all. The
outgoing I have not caped and it has been consistent around 8k or so for
the last week even though i was not really getting anything in at all.

Thanks to all of you leaving your torrents turned on.

I had the same problem with a decreasing dowloload speed rate. To solve it,
open your firewall ! Why ? I'll try to explain.

First, use download/bittorrent-shadowsclient-5.8.4-1mdk.noarch.rpm
from http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/MandrakeClub/test/9.1/i586/BByName.html
It replace the old bitttorrent and shows the torrent with a click on
Advanced. Don't hesitate to use it.

When starting a download, bittorrent opens ~20 links which can upload or
download few k/s (often 2 or 4ks). The sum of them can reach your maximum
bandwith. Each link uses a different port. If you open the window Advanced,
you can see in the third column LocalRemote that all the links are L like
local.
This is because they was initiated locally. The firewall (or shorewall)
accepts links of any port initiated locally.
Few time later, the column shows L and R links. The R links are Remote
links, initiated from outside. If the firewall is not opened for ports
6881..6999, never appears.

With hours, the number of L decreases and number of R increases.
Now, only upload works at 13k/s (download is finished for 48h) and I have
38 peers : 34 R and 4 L.

If you don't open your firewall, you can understand why the DL rate is low!

How-to open the port ?

Edit /etc/shorewall/rules and add at the end
ACCEPT net fw tcp 6881:6999

# shorewall restart

I hope it helps...

With bittorrent-shadowsclient-5.8.4-1mdk it is very easy to tune.
I suggest to use this tool ASAP. Very easy to use and it gives a lot of
details.

After 8 hrs, my download was only 20kB/s on 1536/384, max_upload_rate
 20. About 700 MB had been downloaded and 1200 MB up. Although
6881-6889 and 6969 were opened both ways, at this point I tried a couple
of moves that seemed to have an effect previously. I (1) restarted the
torrent with (2) the firewall disabled only until the torrent was well
underway and download climbed to around 100 kB/s for the balance.

I have a firewall, too. My ADSL is 128/512. The upload speed was always
max_upload=13k but the DL speed decreases to 3k after a few hours.
This is due to the firewall which allows only my requests on ports 6881-6999
When allowing external connection on thes ports, the DL speed increases up
to 30-40k and sometimes more.

Then, it is necessary to include in the package a tool which opens these ports
and switches them off when closing bitTorrent.

I have carefully read the comments and limited upload at 11KiB/s.
IMHO, BitTorrent must be improved and tuned to allow a better repartition of

However, this is a good and useful experience. Next time, it should be better!

Bittorrent works that way, that it creates the file in full size from
start and fills in the blanks. If you are running md5sum on the
non-finished files, you will get bogus values.

The size of the file does not change while downloading, only time stamp.
You have to follow the stats given by torrent client to find out when it
is finished. The size will be always correct, even though only 1% was
 downloaded.

That's not fully true, BitTorrent seems allocates size by chunks

I mostly agree wtih your ideas.

  - Packages have cryptic names
   kde-konqueror-3.1.3-1mdk.i586.rpm
That's just scary. A typical Windows user would never
install anything having a name like that.

  - Descriptions are too technical

That's true. This is _now_ the main difficulty for newcomers and the newbies.

These last days, I have shown to 4 women (40-50 years old) how to install
Mandrake and how to use it. They were not together.
They understand everything including partitioning. Diskdrake is very good.
But they had a great problem with the packages. They don't understand what is
the use of each package and are not able to do a choice.

The idea can be achieved with a status, ie:
- A: programs shown in menus
- B: plugins for these programs
- C: programs in command line
- D: libraries
Then a newbie can select A only to avoid boring informations.
Combining this with the the Menu and Rpm-Groups architecture
(multimedia, gamesfun, network) it would give a better feeling to
newcomers.

I suggest also another class called usage : Recommended,
Alternative, Why not, Deprecated.

Writing better descriptions is not too hard, I for one
volunteer to do that, but even with the finest worded
descriptions users can still be at a loss about what
exactly does each package do. That's why most
beginner-oriented shareware CDs feature screenshots of
 programs they carry.

Yes your idea is very good and ergonomic. As GC said, There would take very
much diskspace, especially screenshots!
To avoid this, it could be useful to create a database hosted by Mandrake:
Main table
Name: generic name of the software (primary key)
class   : program, plugin...
usage : Recommended, Common, Deprecated.
description : default description in english
Localization table
Name: generic name of the software (Foreign key)
langage : fr, en, ...
description : the description of the package
author : author of the description
date: automatic. The latest will be shown.
link-home : home page of the project (ex:
http://fr.openoffice.org/)
screenshot : localized screenshot (name or URL of the file)
Groups table
Name: generic name of the software (Foreign key)
group : Rpm-Group (a software can belongs to several groups)

This is only a draft. I can participate to a full implementation of a
database.
Then it would be easy to export a localized description of each package if it
exists.

I suggest to use the club and contributors (people having an account) to fill
the localized texts and screenshots.

This database should be the first in the world and give the leadership to
Mandrake because people want to be helped in their own language to find
the software they need.

But the most important issue is:
  - I don't want to install packages, I want to
 install programs

Yes, at the beginning, but when needs are increasing, they have to have a look
to the packages. My proposal with classes allows to suit with the needs.

 My proposition
 Here are some screenshots:
 http://members.smartnet.ba/vedran/mdkarp/screen1.png -
I would like to use such a tool !

My proposition of a database don't breaks RpmDrake, it is only a complement
and is along with your ideas. IMHO, it is a good way for a smooth evolution.
RpmDrake can show the localized description if it exists without breaking it.

Thank you for reading this enormous mail :) I'm not
very good at English so sometimes it takes me more
words to articulate my point. Anyway I hope there are
 some useful ideas here.

Fully understandable.
My English is not good, too ! But if we can share our ideas, it will be great!
That's the power of Libre Software :-)

To avoid this, it could be useful to create a database hosted by
  Mandrake:

 several problems :
 1°/ db loads form mdk
 2°/ need an internet connection

we'd better use a local lighweight db like sqlite (
 http://www.sqlite.org/ , http://www.sqlite.org/faq.html ).
The first time rpmdrake is launched or when a hdlist is modified,
rpmdrake rebuild the database and then do everything after on this
database. The difficulty is to sync urpmi/rpmdrake DB with rpm DB ( but
you could think about the fact that when an rpm is inserted or deleted
from rpm DB, rpm automatically update rpmdrake DB accordingly ).
To my mind this could resolve our speed problems with hdlist
computations at rpmdrake start and when performing queries.
I could hope that sqlite may be far faster.

I agree, sqlite is a good idea to replace hdlist. But I was talking of a
another database, hosted by Mandrake, with true foreign keys, grants,
rollback Like posgresql with integrity constraints. The sqlite database
could be an extraction of the main database and this extraction could be
included in the distro (like the localized man or howto).
Query of the Mandrake database could be allowed to to Club members only.

I like evolution instead of revolution. I don't know how is made the rpm
database. I suggest to improve this management step by step.

The first goal is to get a localization of the rpm. But to avoid to modify the
rpms, this could be a separate database in a first step.

I spoke at Metz with Martin Michlmayer (Debian project). They have the same
problem. I dream of a common localization... why not ?

Another idea is that a software can belong to several groups. The groups are
defined in only one tree. This is not enough. It is possible to make other
trees according to the job: Infography, webmaster, professional sound and
music, secretary, and so on. In each profession, certian programs are very
useful or not. My database structure can allow people (from club) to maintain
a level of pertinence (ie 0..10) for each program in each group.
For example OpenOffice would be scored 10 for a secretary and 2 for a
webmaster.

I worked during 23 years with databases (10 with Oracle), I wish to use my
knowledge to help Mandrake.
I don't forget that the aim is to help newcomers, to spare time and money to
Mandrake and help the Libre Software.

ntpd works perfectly, ajust all the clocks.
The documentation is in file:/usr/share/doc/ntp-4.1.1/index.htm

Use ntpd! Some people think that it is intended only to make a server.
That's wrong!
ntpd keeps the time from an atomic clock or from GPS or from another time
server of higher level.
ntpd calculates the drift of the clocks (software and hardware) and setup the
drift compensations.
ntp queries the higher level clock only when its is necessary, never at a
fixed hour to avoid the crazy solution of ntpdate in /etc/cron.daily which
makes the servers overloaded everyday!

When ntpd is setup, the clock looks accurate and the computer can be used
as a time server. But the first job of ntpd is to keep an accurate time.

[Cooker] [Bug 4852] [drakxtools] drakboot dual boot Linux Mandrake is not Linux friendly

A suggestion: in each linux partition, create at the root of the partition a hidden
file called .partition which contains its name and the name of the system which
create it.
Then, it will be easy to recognize for example : /var of Mdk9.0

--- Reminder: ---
assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
status: ASSIGNED
creation_date:
description:
Facts :
- drakboot is Windoze friendly and configures correctly lilo to take into
account previous windoze installation
- with an existing Linux partition (with MdK9.1), drakboot is not friendly and
obliges to edit lilo.conf manually in the end (or at least do manual operations)

What I wanted to do :
- for installation of Mandrake 9.2 beta 2 I did not want to mess my MdK9.1
stable installation
- hence I've dedicated a partition for fresh install of Mandrake 9.2 so that MdK
9.1 is preserved (if data is partitionned, my assumption is it's separated and
hence safe !). That's what I did when some time ago I switched from Windoze and
still gave a chance to revert easily, and it worked flawlessly being very
Windoze friendly (I did not revert though, I've kept moving forward).
- So I expected Mandrake 9.2 to cohabit with Mandrake 9.1 and easily revert,
which proved more difficult than expected but worked in the end.

My diagnosis is that drakboot makes the assumption that another Linux is in
/boot and that taking into account another partition is not well managed hence
this is more a request for enhancement than bug report). It could simplify life
for the noobie (avoiding manual steps ).

At first I pointed at lilo (see previous bug report
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4829), now I think it's more an
enhancement of drakboot to exploit lilo features to the best : provide a simple
strategy to detect previous versions of Linux, in the same way it detects windoze.

Enhancement Proposal :
- detection of another partition with Linux
- configure lilo correctly, either way :
. identify the mount point (e.g. /mnt/linux-0) and configure lilo to take
it into account (may require to copy files - as I had to do - to local partition
/boot...)
. obtain previous configuration and adapt/check it (as partition naming
may have changed in between, as was the case for me)

The point is to use the latest install to take into account previous ones (of
course there are other possibilities), as I tend to expect the latest release
not to break anything (it lowers immediately my confidence in it).
What do you think of it ?

 http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/tmp/mlmain.css

 1-blue image borders gone
 2-some Moz spacing issues gone
 3-more debris removed
4-Main logo is now enclosed in a h1 tag and has a title attribute
 5-css file sorted tidied
 6-Displays in IE (horribly)
7-Displays in Konq (needs improvement, but much better than IE)

Very good ! That's the way.
The code is generated with PHP from about 6 different sources.
Have a look to http://www.csszengarden.com/ and try 'Select a design.
It is always the same XHTML ! Incredible, isn't it ?
It is necessary to place boxes in a page as csszengarden does.

Continue your work (mainly on CSS).
It would be necessary to define clearly the different boxes and their names
on a screenshot. Then it would be easy to know what box each PHP produces
and what style to apply. This is necessary to maintain the site with several
developpers.

Yes I know, but this is not a problem, hr / is not the right solution.
They must be stripped from XHTML and replaced by a border in the CSS.
This is cosmetic. The job is not finished !
Doing a conversion of a page to XHTML strict is not enough.
A valid page is necessary but not suffisant.
There is yet some other modifications to do.

It is possible to have a correct picture with all the browsers as
http://www.openweb.eu.org/
But the few rules which are necessary are not yet applied.

I made this XHTML to evaluate the time to spend on the site and the
difficulty. Now, I can tell that the job is rather easy.
I have spent 2 hours to make the XHTML with vi.
The number of errors was 250 at the beginning.

As the code is generated with PHP, this is the time to modify all the modules
which are used to generate this page.

A main CSS which gives the general appearance of the site must be shared
by all the pages. Specific cascaded CSS give the few specificities of each
page.

No, but a quick translation from old html.
Mozilla is not correct, too.

The code is valid but not correct. The page is only a draft.

For example, the hr should be removed from XHTML and replaced in CSS with:
border-bottom:3px #690 solid;

Now it is necessary to identify the differents parts of the screen.

The best is XML/XSL but browsers are not yet able to use it. As we have not to

A future conversion from XHTML to XML will be very easy if needed.

Yes this is the idea. But instead of a table, it would be better to do a

Then if anything if changed, there is nothing to modify except if new kinds

Now, it is late in France. If you don't do the template, I'll do it tomorrow.

Perhaps is it useful ? I just receive from [Alsa-user]

 [Alsa-user] ALSA Fix!!!

I finally got it right! Ok I am running Mandrake 9.1 on a Sony
PCG-V505BX. My original modules.conf was this:

probeall scsi_hostadapter usb-storage ide-scsi
probeall usb-interface usb-ohci ehci-hcd
alias eth0 e100
alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio
alias char-major-10-250 sonypi
options sonypi minor=250

So I thought Hey I have a Sony Desktop with the same distro that has
ASLA working on a i810 chipset. I took what I found in that
modules.conf and changed mine to this:

probeall scsi_hostadapter usb-storage ide-scsi
probeall usb-interface usb-ohci ehci-hcd
alias eth0 e100
above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
options sonypi minor=250

Apparently Mandrake does not probe this card correctly during install.
This may fix other distros too! Hope this helps the rest of you too. ;)
One more thing. Run it for a bit. For some reason it does not work with
all apps right away. Let me know if you want a workaround with that too.

[Cooker] [Bug 5913] [harddrake] can read partition table with Microsoft Fdisk program after LM install

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5913

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-22-09 22:51 ---
I already encountered this problem and I solved it with a workaround.
I'll try to explain with my poor english.

Windows don't like a fat32 made by Mandrake. That's true.
With windows 95 or 98, you can boot on the CD and make an install. Everything seems
good but the first reboot said that the disk is corrupted.
I discover this in february 2000 when I wanted to left a partition for windows in my
new PC.
Since this date, I have not any Windows at home ;-) The partition was left empty.
Two years later, when I gave the computer to my daughter, she needed windows and I
found
the same problem. After several tries, I succeed. I found again the same problem a
week
ago.

When installing Linux, create the window partion an format it with fat32 to make an
entry in
fstab and lilo.

If you want install windows after Linux, delete the Windows partition (C:\) with
diskdrake !
Then, Windows found an empty disk and format the free room. The windows install is
then
correct, the linux partitions are ignored and not erased.
Last step, boot with rescue disk and run lilo to restore the multiboot.
In case of windowsXP, NTFS is used and fstab must be updated.

This is an old problem: at least 3.5 years old.
IMHO, if this bug is too difficult, ignore it and write a workaround in good english.
A warning can be shown by diskdrake in case of an empty windows partition at the
beginning of the disk.

[Cooker] [Bug 5901] [kdebase] New: Mdk9.2rc2 - Konqueror segfault when renaming files

2003-09-21 Thread [jarillon]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5901

   Product: kdebase
 Component: kdebase
Summary: Mdk9.2rc2 - Konqueror segfault when renaming files
   Product: kdebase
   Version: 3.1.3-49mdk
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: kdebase
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In a directory with some large files (sound recording) : 50M to 250M, I wished to
rename the
files with konqueror.
Konqueror does the rename and then crashes with segfault when refreshing the display.
The names of files are like this:
1-Boccherini.waw
2-Tortelier.wav
NB: the disk is not full. 3G free.

[Cooker] [Bug 5876] [drakconf] compact flash reader not configured correctly

I had the same problem.
If I launch DiskDrake, the icon appears, and I cancel DiskDrake in the pop-up window.

Have a look at Bug#: 2186 about Flash readers :
If I plug and unplug usb flashreaders from different vendors in any order, it is
difficult to use
them again. Reboot is the easiest way.

Now my compact flash reader is not configured correctly.

In drakconf it appears as both :

The associated sda usb storage drive is detected.

Look at screen shot.

The associated dynamic icon does not appear automatically in KDE
anymore, as a consequence I suppose.

On the other PC : Asus P4PE, chip as99127f , I have no problem.
The first time, I had :
fan1: 2265 RPM (min = 1500 RPM, div = 4) ALARM
After editing /etc/sensors.conf and reset of sensors, it works fine.

I have noticed that the output of sensors gives:
alarms:
beep_enable:
  Sound alarm enabled
However I have heard no alarm the first time !
And there is no mention of alarms in /etc/sensors.conf or in documentation.

I guess that this is the problem on the other computer.
It should be better to package sensors with sound alarm disabled.

Le Jeudi 18 Septembre 2003 09:51, Frederic Soulier a écrit :

Considering the comments I've seen on this issue I guess Mandrake should
release a RC3 providing they can postponed final until late September.
If for commercial reasons they have to release ~22/9 then there will be
 no RC3 I'm affraid...

RC2 is no more than a beta. All the changes must be integrated in a new ISO
to test a fresh install from a CD.
OpenOffice is a good example with four release candidate.
I am sure that Mdk9.2 will be a success, but a RC3 (IMHO the first true RC)
can make a great success, even a very great success.
Don't waste this chance for a week! We need a RC3.

When rpmdrake requires one or more CD, the last CD remains in the CD-ROM
reader and is often forgotten.
Then when the final message is displayed, it would be useful to open the tray if
a CD-ROM was required.

On the first screen of installation there are 2 possibilities:
- install [Enter]
- more options [F1]

A lot of people don't dare to press F1 because more options means more
knowledge of the system. People familiar with computers miss this important
feature which allows install in text mode and rescue.

My suggestion is: Options and other functions.

With a fresh install of Mdk9.2rc2, Epson 1240U is not detected.

This scanner was automatically detected and installed with previous versions.

After installation and reboot, MCC = scannerdrake, the scanner is perfectly detected,
the
software installed and the scanner set-up.
The USB scanner is always plugged-in and power on.

I never had errors with image preview again, this bug should be closed
 IMHO.

IMHO, this was due to the lack of kdegraphics.
After urpmi kde_missing_packages_mdk.rpm it works !

I made a fresh install of Mdk9.2rc2 on a PC.

Mdk9.2rc2 it is not detected during install. After the first reboot, with MCC, I have
launched
scannerdrake which had done everything needed.
The scaner Epson 1240U works fine and is automaticaly detected and installed since
Mdk8.1.

This is not exactly the same bug but perhaps the same cause.

 Yes, confirmed.
Please change to 4 last used applications.

It is a good value.

I have not found how set up this with kcontrol
I have not found it in ~/.kde/share/config/

But I have found it in kcmshell kicker_config

Access with:
= right click on K
= Dasboard menu
= Configure Dashboard
= Menu (tab)

And the value is stored in ~/.kde/share/config/kickerrc

Not easy to found !

I could agree if apt and urpmi were only for the same purpose, but did
urpmi-parallel (possibility to install on many differents machines of a
cluster -may be a subnetwork-) exists for apt for example ?

A full merging is not a good wish. But all differences which are not still
useful. For example you can launch a gnome program in a KDE environment.
It would be nice to make a package for Mandrake and Debian with the same tool.

If ever it was possible to create a universal package, the installers could be
different.
