I am also interested finding out about Sonos ZP80.  I use both SB3 and
Sonos system.  

I use one SB3 for my main Hi-Fi system in entertainment room.  I am
using Sonos for rest of the house now (where UI and synch ability are
more important than Hi-Fi).  

If ZP80 with digital output is equal to SB3, I will probably change my
last SB3 out.

Hi All,

I've just fixed up home.html in Nokia 700 skin to specify image width
and height for all the images. This makes it much more pleasant and
faster on first use because:

1) it doesn't redraw as it downloads the images

2) because of 1 the final image appears quicker

If you use the skin on a modern PC you'll never notice the redraw but
on the Nokia 770 itself it's quite apparent. This should probably be
done across the entire .html set. I've attached a revised home.html for
anyone that's insterested.

Are you referring to the old xBox.  The old xBox is a dinosaur so it may
be unfair to judge the xBox360 with the new one.

Just wondering how the xBox score as a media box, as it has tight
integration with Windows Media OS it may be work as a video version of
the SB.  Also, since it has more processing power it should be able to
do what the SB does

Synchronisation seems to work on the latest build - IF you are just
using harware ( any version of the Slim devices ).  However, once a
SoftSqueeze client is included, there is a latency of about half a
second for that particular client.

If you just try synchronising a number of SoftSqueeze clients, there is
(just-about)OK sunchronisation, but I am guessing that this is because
my hardware is of the same generation and this happens by luck rather
than by design.

To reiterate, the problems I am seeing are on the above configuration. 
Note that the firmware is fixed at version 21 to match up with the
slimserver version, as advised by kdf.  
I have begun thinking that it may be a server problem, as I have
observed that the wireless stops transmitting from the laptop (no
blinking light, unless I request a url, SB3 screen goes blank as it has
stopped receiving the now-playing info, but song continues to play for a
while out of the buffer). So I think I'll try updating to 6.2.1 and see
what happens, unless some other great ideas come along.  We'll see what
Dan and the boys and Slim have to say when they get in to work today.

Actually what I meant was, what SlimServer version 
are you running?  (That dictates the Squeezebox 
firmware version).

Not what router firmware version, since I don't 
have your router, nor am I likely to get one now.  ;-)

I figured out what the problem was: by reading an old forum I
discovered the problem could lie in a perl issu, as I was keeping some
cue sheets created with EAC together with the single flac files. I
squeezed the cues to zip files and the problem was solved...

[slim] Slimserver will not find audio files within a subdirectory of a mapped drive

Hello,

Thanks to older posts and newer replies it seems I am solving out most
of the problems affecting my squeezebox and my slimserver.

One last problem, however, is still there to puzzle me. I am using a
Netgear SC101 with a Maxtor 300 giga hard drive in it. This is
connected to a Netgear router directly and works fine with all my
software. If a indicate a directory in the Maxtor drive as my music
folder, the slimerver will accept the link (therefore showing that it
does indeed recognise the drive) but will not find any audio files
behind the folder. No problems, on the contrary, for the files residing
in the root directory of the drive. If I use browse music folder, the
slimserver will nevertheless locate the files, and once play is
pressed, they will also be available to browse using the search
artist/album/year masks, etc. As I am keeping a huge amount of flac
files, I am quite frustrated by this problem, as this does not allow me
to rely on the *clear playlists and rescan* command to update the
slimserver.

In previous posts, I found someone suggesting to wipe the cache each
time before rescanning, but I cannot find a command like that in the
6.2.2. version of the slimserver. Any help will indeed be mostly
appreciated!

It is the SMC WCB-G - I've been pleased with it so far.  One thing I
like is that it tells you signal strength as well as 'link quality', so
it helps with identifying issues. For example, last night the SB
actually started 'stuttering' - I currently have the laptop near the
unit while I'm troubleshooting - although signal strength was over 50%,
link quality for some reason was dropping to 10% (noise/interference
somewhere? - neighbours phone?) I switched channels and it seemed to
clear up.
Is it possible the laptop card is causing problems?

Malcolm-- thanks for the patch to home.html. I hadn't realized I didn't
have width/height tags on the home img tags. I tested it, then checked
in your revision a few minutes ago.

I have some ideas on the 780 vs 800 width thing. I'm going to test them
out today and see how it works.

Thanks!  Right now I'm sticking with WRT54GS/GL HyperWRT + Thibor. 
http://www.thibor.co.uk/ I guess it's a combined version of HyperWRT
and Thibor.  My friend recommended it after great success using it's
QOS functionality with his Vonage VOIP adapter.  Unfortunately I have
not yet been able to convince him to get a Squeezebox... :(

I have an Intel 2200BG card which resulted in spurious disconnects to my
Linux server - turned out to be power mangement in the laptop reducing
wireless signal. I don't know about the SMC card 

AFAIK WPA results in a small reduction in bandwidth - since both server
and SB3 are connected by wireless, 
Is it possible that you are getting bandwidth problems ? 
Is there something pulling your network down to 802.11b ? 
What is the connection speed between laptop and router ? 
Are you sending WAV to the SB3 ?

That's the only situation I've ever considered using AllOfMp3.com for,
myself; I've got a couple CDs that I really like which have deteriorated
to the point of unrippability.  But the album I'm most interested in
replacing, Element of Light by Robyn Hitchcock, isn't even available on
allofmp3.com, and last time I saw it available used on amazon, it was
going for $30, which is a ridiculous amount to pay for a record I
already own.

Argh.

can't get this to work yet. Michael Herger on the developers forums

Okay, thanks, I see where you can create a mix in MMJB, and then
right-click the MMJB Play button to get a list of available players,
and for the Slimserver, a list of connected SB units.  Each unit is
listed by it's MAC address (client name would be easier to recognize).

However, when I select the Bedroom unit, the playlist still gets routed
to the Living Room unit?

I'm sending FLAC or mp3, so minimal bandwidth required. Usually the
connection speed is really high - I can put lots of other traffic on
the connection without stuttering, with the exception of the incident
last night, where the 'link quality' degraded and connection speed
dropped to less than 1 Mbps, which caused stuttering, but not an
outright shutdown.

I find it amazing that the original author has the idea that his
widget somehow warrants a strict attitude like that. The widget does a
very basic task, nothing complex has to be done and no inventive coding
seems to be needed. I might just take this challenge up and start a new
version (have not looked at his code at all). Have looked into the
SlimServer's XML interfaces and everything seems to be there to code a
new widget...

I don't think i will have the time to maintain this code but if i ed up
doing this i will make sure everyone is allowed to ;0)

I am aware of that; I'm not saying that files like that are  
lossless to

begin with.  However, ripping them to CD doesn't degrade their sound
quality from the original lossy file any further, as ripping them back
to a wav wouldn't either.  All a file is on an audio cd is a wav file,
with a bit of encryption.  When you rip songs purchased through iTunes
to a CD, it rips them to a wav.  I was proposing keeping them as such
to get rid of the DRM stuff attached to them.



One other point to consider
Burning to CD and then ripping a file from iTunes will remove the  
DRM, and you won't suffer an additional quality loss if you use a  
lossless format. But remember, you will have the quality of a 128  
kbps (or whatever) lossy file with the file size of a non-lossy file.  
May not be a big deal in this era of cheap drives, and if you only  
have a few tracks in this situation, but it will add up if you have a  
lot of tracks from the ITMS.

with 6.5, it should not be necessary to create custom pages for every 
plugin.  Making proper use of cmdwrappers should alow a plugin o conform 
to a skins look and feel without needing custom templates.

Well, Xbox media center is pretty slick, but I don't know how long 
it'll be supported now that the Xbox 360 is out.  And you have to 
hack your Xbox to run it.  You really need a mod chip and you may 
well need a new, larger hard drive, depending on what you want to do.

I tried the codes available for sony and power on off worked (albeit
reversed), but volume did not.

my netgear DG834 has never had a problem, connecting via a belkin 54g
WAP.

The Linksys WRT54G seems to be very reliable.

The 360 has two real disadvantages for me: sound quality (not going to
be as good as the Squeezebox), and the need for a TV (I don't have one
where my stereo is). It's also a lot more expensive (you'll need to buy

console and DVD player for that money as well.

[slim] SB3 locking up!!!

My SB3 has been working flawlessly until I added a bunch of music
recently. I just about filled up my hard drive (7.39GB left of 279GB
total). I placed a link to a folder on another drive for more music
within the primary folder as well.. Now my SB3 finds everything and
starts playing any song chosen but it locks up after a few seconds,
stops playing, stops responding in any way, and I have to unplug it to
get it to work again. Anyone have any ideas about what the problem is
and how to fix it?

I removed the link to the other drive, I rescanned my library, I've
gone into settings and increased cache size and turned off artwork.
I've even Defragmented my HD's. No success yet. Next I'm thinking of
removing some albums from my primary music file to free up some memory
on the HD. I remember reading that you shouldn't totally fill up your
HD but I figured 7GB of free space was plenty.

Any help would be appreciated because I can't go back to playing CD's
again.

And since you must have QuickTime installed to use iTunes (DRM files or
not), I'm not sure what the big deal is?

Music Library is a Java-based program that uses the QuickTime API for
this purpose.

I'm just looking for a decent hardware device that will stream audio
wirelessly from the PC to the stereo.

What Im interested in discussing is how one would extend the SlimServer
software to include Music Library as a playback source (as opposed to
iTunes).

Where should I go to discuss that?

[slim] Can't connect to web interface @ 127.0.0.1

I've just installed slimserver on a new machine and have a weird
problem.   I can't connect to 127.0.0.1:9000

I have a webserver running on the same computer on ports 80 and 8080
and I'm able to connect to 127.0.0.1:8080 just fine.

However, I can connect to 192.168.1.101:9000 (ip of said computer)
Any ideas?   Security settings have allow from 127.0.0.1,192.168.1.*

Right here. Slimserver does what you're asking -- however, it cannot 
play the encrypted files that you buy from ITMS unless you decrypt them 
first. This design limitation is imposed by Apple and cannot be overcome 
by the Slim Devices engineers, unless you want to tap the computer's 
sound card (the so-called analog hole). Check out icecast if you want 
to go this way; my page at

adequate starting point.

[slim] No .shn Playback OS X

Can't figure out why my G5Imac running 10.4.4, Slimserver 6.2.2 won't
playback .shn files.

When I save/change the shn related preferences in Slimserver it shoots
out the related line from convert.conf and says it can't find an
appropriate binary.

I'm running (Carbonized) Shorten 1.1a4 available here:

I can decode/recode shns on the Mac without issue;FLAC/mp3 playback
work great.


Is it a path issue in convert.conf?  Do I need to substitute the path
to the shorten binary in the appropriate $FILE$ directive in
convert.conf?  I don't really understand the syntax of convert.conf and
haven't been able to find any documentation related to it.  My
convert.conf looks alright, I guess...

Could somebpody that has functional shn to /wav/flac/mp3 playback on
their SB3/Slimserver give some help/recommendations?

I have an as*load of archived .shns - this is a big issue for me.

the plugin pages should process pageheader.html already.  You could 
have your pagehead process menu.html so that it is available to any 
plugin, or have cmdwrappers process menu.html where needed inside the 
contentcontainer.  cmdwrappers is loaded by a PREPROCESS in the 
slimserver web server, so it should be possible.

I'm also not sure what exactly is missing.  With the patch that I 
provided in the dev forum, you should be able to see a nokia770-like 
versino of random and favourites already.  You just have to make more 
use of [% webroot %] instead of making those urls absolute.  An 
absolute href will break the skinoverride in urls.  Anyone with the 
default (or any other skin) as their pref, would see the pref skin.  
The patch lets the server point to the right place in all cases.

I'm making the necessary changes to all of the pages and will update
svn in a few minutes.

This will give plugin-fed pages the top nav bar and player chooser.

One remaining inconsistency is that I want the playlist controls to
show up on the left, not the right of each table row (left is the
convention throughout the skin, and IMO for good readson). I'm pretty
sure that would have to happen via a custom skin for the plugins, but
it's a minor point compared to getting the nav bar up there...thanks
for the pointer, KDF.

No, the files are decoded prior to the soundcard.  A programmer
reverse-engineered the quicktime API for the protected format and put
the method in a book - QuickTime for Java: A Developer's Notebook By
Chris Adamson

The software I'm talking about, Music Library, is unique in that it's
the only thing out there right now that will play all different file
types AND also access Sony CD Changer tracks via a Slink-e AND placed
them in the same inventoried library list.

check the logs with d_source enabled in server settings-debugging.

more than liklely, it is a problem with the metadata.  Shorten 
documentation is very limited for extracting metadata directly.  The 
classic method of extracting the WAV header is the one used by 
slimserver.  This doesn't seem to work for all shorten files, and I 
have never found a reason why.

I don't have any ITMS files or $45 to test it out, but I think you may 
be misunderstanding what I'm saying when I say play via the 
soundcard... what I mean is deliver the unencrypted sound to the 
soundcard as opposed to a network pipe or file handle. If this program 
does enable delivery of unencrypted sound to something other than the 
soundcard, he can probably expect a Cease  Desist from Apple pretty 
soon. Still, you might be able to hack something together in the meantime.

So you're already most of the way there. You next need to convert that 
line-in into an http stream. Shoutcast and Icecast are two methods for 
doing this. This methodology is a huge pain to set up, maintain, and use 
though. It will probably never work reliably. You're really a lot better 
off just burning to CD and ripping back to MP3 (a one-time hassle).

playlist, just like fishbone? This would be a great help when I want
information on a track in a random playlist that isn't the currently
playing track.

to upgrade Perl. I'm using CentOs 4.2, which is basically RedHat
Enterprise. Can anyone help?

For what it's worth, I've had this frequently, but only since 6.1.
5.4.x was rock solid, and would run for weeks; 6.x runs for hours at
most.

But note what it says on that site:
 
 Protected AAC files (M4P) must be authorized to your computer. This can
 be done only by iTunes, which requires Windows 2000 or XP or Mac OS X.

Thanks to the wonders of the DMCA, it's illegal to circumvent the DRM
of iTunes in the US.  (It may be legal to use the 'analog loophole' ..
but then, it may not... depending on whether a court sees the digital
protection as extending to analog playback or not... I'd rather not be
a test case.)

I see nothing to indicate that Music Library allows access to the
unencrypted stream, or even that it can do anything other than request
iTunes DLL's to play a given track.

The contentitem object in cmdwrappers should allow you to set the 
controls wherever you like. It all depends on where in the [% BLOCK 
contentitem -%] that you PROCESS the controls. Check Moser and Default 
skin for examples. You can just move it to before the [% content %] 
section.  To make it work originally, I just pasted from Default so 
that the plugins woudln't be completely wrecked.  There are some minor 
errors that have to be cleaned up.  What you probably want is more like 
this:

yes, sorry about that.  Being as active as you are on this skin right 
now, I'd normally have posted a note and left it for you.  however, in 
this case I felt it was best to make sure it went in with the plugin 
changes so that we didn't have a nightly build that generated a 
crazy-looking page, and consequently dozens of complaints when the 
nightly came out.

[slim] Replay Gain function

Does the Replay gain function work equally well with either the Sound
Check feature of iTunes or the manual volume adjustment in Itunes?

I ask because the utility i used to equalize the volumes in my library
(iVolume) has changed the way it operates. It now uses the Sound
Check functionality rather than the manual volume adjustment and I
don't want to change anything unless it will still work with my SB3.

'I' button was replaced by hyperlinking all track names to the info
page. Just click on the song title and you'll get what you're asking
for...

[slim] Page cannot be displayed error in Slimserver

I'm getting a The page cannot be displayed in the right pane, where it
would normally show the play list.  Hasn't always been like this, and
I'm not sure what changed to make it happen.

Tried reinstalling Slimserver, but the same behavior started again
after a short time.  (In fact, I re-imaged the whole system).

Anyone run into this/have any ideas?

I don't really have the option of upgrading as there's no RPM available
for my distribution (CentOs) and I'm a Linux newbie. Even Fedora 4 only

Ah, think I got it

Pop-up blocker in IE was turned on.  Turning it off seems to have made
the problem go away.

[slim] Converting SlimServer Playlists to ITunes Playlists...

Is there a way to convert a playlist that I created in SlimServer to an
iTunes playlist? I have tried a few different apps to convert .m3u
files to iTunes playlists, but none seem to work.

Of course, it could just be the user!

I may have had an error in there (wasn't tested after all).  Run from 
command line and usually anything wrong results in dumps to the screen. 
 Things like missing [% END %]'s can do this.  A bad edit will 
generate an error, but might still revert to the cached version and 
show as unchanged.

You would have to do it manually if you do not have sync'ed players. 
There is the FollowMe plugin, that alllows you to pass a curent
playlist from one player to another, but that doesn't start playback at
the same time either.  It sounds like that you want is really
synchronised players.  In that case, use softsqueeze on each remote
site and sync them using the player settings.  Then you can pick the
sync'ed group in the player pulldown.

Problem is back.  Now setting the pop-up blocker off/on/off isn't
resolving the page can not be displayed error.

That does seemn to work.  But, I had to get rid of the cached pages in
Cache/templates in order to get the change right away.  I sitll don't
understand TT caching.

[slim] Original Squeezebox vs. SB3?

I love my SB3 at home and was thinking about getting one for my beach
house.  A few original Squeezeboxes are now offered on Ebay.  My stereo
is close enough to my AP to go wired or wireless.  My music files are
all flac.  Would I be giving up anything that I love about the SB3 with
an original Squeezebox?  I mainly just play my music files.

flac is not native on teh original SB, so it would be transcoded to 
WAV. If you run wired, that shouldn't be a problem.


The DAC is not as good on the SB, so if you use analog outputs, you may 
find that the sound isn't as nice as the SB3 if your ears are sensitive.


original SB cannot connect to SqueezeNetwork, and may only have the 
character display rather than the graphics display (grphics upgrade at 
lower res then SB3 came out as the SBG)

[slim] Slim Devices - I need your help!!!

I sent my supplier my SB3 back as being faulty. However, they are saying
that they have tested it and have found no fault. Also, they are saying
that they wont return it until i pay a charge.

It is faulty, the top half of the screen fails and the front metal
bezel is coming un-stuck. The problem is that the unit needs to be run
for a while before they appear because it's a heat issue. I have
photo's to prove it. I don't want a refund, it just want a working
SB3.

It's obviously a genuine mistake, but could someone official email them
explaining that these are known faults?

Could someone PM me and i will give more details of the company and RMA
number etc?

I have a 360. Excellent games machine, lousy media player. Basically,
with an XP machine on your network you can:
Look at JPGs
Listen to WMA/MP3

To play video (WMV/MPEG only) you need a machine running Media Center
(which I don't have or want). 

If you already have a Media Center PC which you use for DVR etc then
the 360 would probably be a nice way to watch videos in other rooms.
Without that, it's pretty useless, and certainly no comparison with SB3
for audio.

I'm still looking for a (simple) way to watch DivX on my TV without
burning DVDs.

Taking the advice of a previous poster, here is how it fixed itself:

Stop SS service via the system tray
Open a command prompt, navigate to the SS folder, and run SLIM.EXE
My hard drive churned away for many minutes.
Once the hard drive access stopped, I opened up Internet Explorer to
config my device and all is now well with finding my iTunes Playlist.
On a reboot, all is still well with finding my new iTunes Playlists.

If so, how well do they work? Any gotchas, things (or models) to

copyright laws are the entertainment industry who write them and the
Congressmen  women who agree to pass them for a fee.

(yes, I realize that the corruption isn't as clear cut as in-the-open
bribes but hiding behind corrupt campaign finance rules and vacations
and all of the other things we're hearing about in the Abramoff case
show that the corruption has merely been obfuscated to make it harder
for the American people to follow)

The obvious response is, well you have the opportunity to vote against
these people. The obvious answer is, no, you don't. Both parties in
our system have constructed things to make the entry of third party and
independent candidates virtually impossible. 

Individuals no longer have a say when it comes to copyright. The debate
is between electronics manufacturers and the entertainment industry.
Both sides are interested in earning our dollars - neither campaigns
for the rights of individuals. We've lost our voice.

I don't know if it will help but try these two things.  First of all,
you should have at least 10% free space on any hard drive, optimally 15
- 20%.  After freeing up some space I'd try defragmenting the drive. 
When a volume get's really full like that things can get pretty messy. 
But be sure you create adequate free space first - a drive will not
defrag effectively with only 2-3% free space as you have.

[slim] Unable to play XFM radio feed

Hi,

I've been trying to play the following internet radio station:

mms://ms2.capitalinteractive.co.uk/xfm_high

but get no sound.  It looks as if it is going to work, and says it is
loading the station, but I just get silence.  Most other radio stations
seem to work.

I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.4 with a SB2.

Well I did own a Neuston media box that does video quite well and MP3s
very poorly.  Not a bad box if you use it mostly for video, as a music
box it is close to unusable for me in terms of ergonomics and sound
quality. Not sure what the status of the company is.

Looks like people are getting really close to having this all working. I

Yes, Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution says The Congress shall
have Power...To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by
securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right
to their respective Writings and Discoveries That's it. 

The first Congress in 1790 was left to interpret that phrase into
legislation and did so by establishing a copyright of 14 years plus the
possibility to register for 14 more. That law has been amended dozens of
times so that the current protection is for seventy years after the
death of an author. The result is a copyright term that is well over
100 years vs. the 28 envisioned by the authors of the Constitution.

The length of copyright is only half the story, however. Individuls
used to be protected by fair use, which allows individuals to use works
they have purchased for their own personal use any way they choose to.
These rights were further supported by the first sale doctrine which
allows individuals to dispense with copyrighted works they have
purchased as they see fit, including to sell them (this is how we're
allowed to sell used CDs and DVDs and used books). 

Unfortunately, fair use and the first sale doctrine are being
constantly eroded. The entertainment industry wants to eliminate both
of them and they are having quite a bit of success. The bill they
authored that became the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, for instance,
made it illegal for you tamper with something you have purchased even if
that tampering is for your own personal use. This allows the
entertainment industry to sell you something today and change what you
can and cannot do with it tomorrow or the next day, whenever they see
fit. You no longer own the things you buy. You no longer are allowed
fair use or in some cases, the advantages of the first sale doctrine.

This is immoral. No one who is deeply familiar with the state of
intellectual property in this country outside of those paid by the
entertainment industry supports the rampant degredation of our rights
that has been occuring over the last 40-50 years. 

Is it wrong to violate an immoral law? That's a tricky question.
Legally yes, but morally? Each of has to decide for ourselves. 

Finally, allow me to point out that there is almost no one active in
the movement to protect individual intellectual property rights that
wants to stop financially supporting the artists that produce content.
In fact, we want them to get their just dessert for their work and
creativity. These two principles are not mutually exclusive.

The 360 has several big advantages over the Squeezebox:

1.  It can use WMC (on a regular XP box) or Media Center (on an MCE
box) functionality, so doesn't require installation of third-party
software like SlimServer.  This is nice if you have a Media Center, but
not important with XP, since WMC is about as resource-hungry as
SlimServer (no surprise; it's doing basically the same task).

2.  It's PlaysForSure compliant, so works great with the subscription
music services (Yahoo, Rhapsody, Napster) and non-iTunes online music
stores.  This is a huge, phenomenal benefit if you have a subscription
service or lots of purchased DRMed tracks, and a total non-issue
otherwise.

3.  It can do HD photo slideshows.  This is very nice, at least with
the Media Center UI (I haven't tried it with the 360 Dashboard UI).  If
you have an HDTV, lots of digital pictures, and people who want to see
them, this is a big deal.  Not competitive with the Squeezebox, but it
puts the Roku HD-1000 right out of business, as far as I'm concerned.

4.  With Media Center, It can stream HD (and non-HD) video.  This is
wonderful if you get HD over-the-air and have a system that can handle
it; or if you get NTSC via any source; or if you really, really love to
watch the three minute snippets of Imax movies available from
Microsoft's WMV-HD Content Showcase.  Otherwise, it's a bit of a
novelty until Vista comes out with CableCard support.

5.  The available games are much, much better.  SlimTris doesn't even
begin to compete with Hexic, never mind Kameo.

But the SB has some big advantages of its own:

1.  The UI is better, even compared to the Media Center UI on the 360. 
The 360 limits you -- like a lot of devices -- to a two-tier browse. 
Genre, then Album; or Artist, then Album; but never Genre, Artist, and
then Album.  The larger your music collection, the more this matters. 


2.  It has real audio output hardware.  The 360 resamples everything to
48KHz (like the Roku M1001) and in general isn't aiming for hi-fi street
cred.  Considering it sells for $400 and has the gaming capabilities it
has, no surprise.

3.  It's quiet.  The 360 is loud, about like a standard desktop
computer in media mode (and more like a SFF computer at 100% CPU
utilization -- which, really, is what it is -- when playing games).  If
you're using it for party music, or to watch Armageddon, no biggie.  But
for listening to relatively quiet music?  Unacceptable.

4.  It doesn't need the TV.  I wasn't sure if this would be a big deal,
but it is.  Having to have the TV on to listen to music bothers me.

My recommendation:

If you don't have a Squeezebox, and play your music on your stereo with
those round disc things (CDs, I believe they used to call them), you
absolutely need to get SOMETHING that'll get you into the modern era. 
Both the 360 and the SB are excellent devices, but the SB is a device
built for one purpose -- and an excellent single-purpose device will
nearly always beat an excellent multi-purpose device when performing
its intended function.

If you don't care about gaming, don't use your MCE PC as a DVR, and
don't have a lot of PFS DRMed music, skip the 360 and just get a
Squeezebox.  It's significantly better for pure music.

But if the non-music capabilities of the 360 appeal to you, absolutely
buy one.  Its music capabilities are better than any non-Squeezebox
device (the 360 is much, much better than a Roku SoundBridge, for
instance), and given the video, photo, and gaming capabilities, it's a
steal for $399.

If you do buy a 360, though, seriously consider getting a Squeezebox,
too.  If you can afford it, and care about music in a significant way
(if you have a receiver that costs over $1000 -- or separates of any
kind -- you probably can and do), it's worth it.

Has this survived a supreme court challenge?

I'm not in the US, so I'm not familiar with US politics, but it's hard
to see how DMCA could overturn fair use and first sale, principles
which have been in place for eons.

[slim] slimserver not recognizing Artist/Album

I am trying to get slimserver (slimserver-6.2.1-1) working with 
softsqueeze under linux prior to purchasing the hardware.

On pc1 I have slimserver running 
On pc2 I have softsqueeze running

The problem I have is that when I try to scan my music collection
I do not see individual albums/artists. All the mp3s show up 
under No Artist and No Album.

But when I click on Browse Albums I see 

1 album with 38 songs by 1 artist


I have the following directory structure

/mnt/disk2/slim/
1_maniacs/
blind_mans_zoo/  
mtv_unplugged/  
our_time_in_eden/

With the mp3s for each album under the subdirectory.



Under Server Settings I set the directory path for Music Folder to 

/mnt/disk2/slim

I then click on Rescan Music Library



How can I make slimserver recognize different artists/albums?
