[slim] Re: Upgraded to 6.5.1 and NO SOUND

2007-01-23 Thread ceejay

You've not said what OS you are using.

There have been some problems with ALAC decoders, I think. As a test
you could try ripping or transcoding an album or two to FLAC or WAV and
check that this is ok.

Also, when you try to play something, do you get an error, or does the
SB look like it thinks its playing something?

[slim] Re: Ideas for Squeezebox 4

2007-01-23 Thread steve4586

Just thought I would add my h'pennies worth.

Being new to the SS/SB world, I am still blown away by the concept.
The fundamental principals of the system design is excellent. In
keeping with the design philosophy I think audio quality should away be
kept at the fore. You can buy any number of lofi systems to play music.
But to have a hifi solution is brilliant. There are those of us (and
mostly in this forum!) who place the quality and pleasure of musical
presentation above gimmicks.

However, easy of use needs to be addressed. I would love to see
development with the Server web page. Drag and drop editing for
playlists for one - I find the current method far too clunky. The
other thing is a stop key on the remote to compliment the play,
pause, ff, rwd keys. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but sometimes I
just want to stop the music, which I can do from the web interface, but
not the SB.

Cheers

Use the Power button. Since the SB is never really off, the Power
button just stops the currently playing song. Play with screensavers
settings to get the desired behavior when in the (not really) powered
off state. I always just set the screen saver for powered off and
not playing to the same thing (Date Time) and the delay to a couple
seconds, so there's no visible difference between off and not playing.

Xbox with one HD ~ 260mA ~ GBP 5
Libretto 70CT (weather station) ~ 38mA ~ GBP 0.72!
Vaio Laptop ~ 100mA ~ GBP 1.90

Take your point about frequency of server fires... I may pension off

Well, I'm feeding this post all by myself...

I think I've find out why the stats would decrease...
I checked which artists where missing, and they all have only a few
tracks, no entire album.
So I went in the settings to find if something could be responsible for
this behaviour, and I did find such an option in the (newly installed)
trackstat plugin. There are minimum numbers of songs for an -artist
-album to be shown, and a minimum duration for the songs. I'll see if
this sets things back to MM matching values.

2007-01-23 Thread Siduhe

You may be onto something for the minimum and maximum duration of songs,
and I'm not sure that it is only a Track stat issue.

MusicIP imposes both a minimum and maximum track length time below /
above which it will not analyse the music. I have a couple of very
short clips (loops) that aren't analysed or mixable, and some very long
mix albums that are the same. According to the MIP forums, at least 135
seconds is needed to analyse the track fingerprint, and analysis is
disabled by default on tracks over 15 minutes. I wonder if the fact
that these are in the database, but aren't analysed or mixable could
account for the library discrepencies ? Will count them up this
evening and see...

Slightly OT. I recently bought a Topfield TF6000PVR which has wireless

Another option, I have heard people connecting PVRs USB to an

Saves cables.

2007-01-23 Thread Stan Pulsar

Well, I checked this too. But I've 13 non-mixables tracks in MM, and
only 5 tracks not shown in SS.
And this certainly doesn't explain the 19 artists missing. I checked
what artists were missing (I only found 18, but that maybe my mistake,
reading 2 lists of about 240 names) and they are artists with only a
few songs and no album of their own.

For the moment the stats in SS didn't go back to full values, nut I
decided to let go and not rescan, to see my nightly scheduled scan will
set this right.

I'd like to see the display in a rotate-able section in the end of the
Squeezebox, so you can have it in the end like the SB 1/2 or rotate it
round the side like the SB3. I know peaople want both, hell make the
display a slim removable module that could be extended and remote
mounted (or replaced with other types of display).

I'd like clock input/output on the unit, this would make proper
impementation of digital easier, as out home theatre systems get more
complex I see soon people will be trying to clock all their devices off
a master clock. should not be a big issue to implement either.

IMHO the Squeezebox is a good piece of kit for what its does, we need
to be careful not to lose it best feature, simplicity, if plays music
from a server, we want to make it do this better, sound better, look
better and be easier to use, by all means make some device with local
storage, card readers and inbuilt amplifiers, do not call it a
squeezebox though.

Hi Zed,

The latest plugin is available here:
http://a213-84-196-8.adsl.xs4all.nl/slim2lirc/Lirc.pm
The 'Lirc junction box' application can be found here:
http://a213-84-196-8.adsl.xs4all.nl/slim2lirc/lircjb

You start the lircjb (from /etc/rc.local or manually)

/usr/local/bin/lircjb -l -p 12345 /dev/lircd

You copy the Lirc.pm plugin to the slimserver Plugin directory and
restart slimserver. Lirc.pm will be sending IR codes it receives over
UDP port 12345 to lircjb.

At this time you should be able to run 'irw' and see the slimremote
buttons you press being echoed. Note: Lirc.pm only captures and
retransmits button presses when a SqueezeBox is off (standby) or when
you've selected 'Lirc Remote' from the Plugin menu.

Now you must edit the mythtv .lircrc file to tell mythtv what buttons to
react to and what to do when they are pressed. Note that Lirc.pm only
forwards codes it recognizes. At the moment that means the slimdevices
remote, but the code mapping can be changed at the end of the Lirc.pm file.

I'd be interested to hear if it works for you.

Peter

You don't have to use the switch in LAME to produce gapless files it's
been doing it automatically at least since 3.96.1. 3.71 is now the
official version anyways.

It's not really a cludge. Rockbox supports gapless playback of MP3s,
the shibatch mpg123 plugin for Winamp supports it as does the normal
Winamp in_mp3 plugin I now believe?

It's a bit odd that SS needs a rescan of your library to support it.
It's the decoder than should support it surely, not the library?

The reason is that SlimServer sends files to the player not starting at
the beginning but at the start of the audio data, since there may be
lots of tag data in front. This is partly to support the legacy
players I believe. Anyway, previous versions had the offset value
wrong so the LAME data was not sent to the decoder.

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31443

Question: How do you control the Slimserver?

- Stock Handheld Remote
- 3rd Party Remote (Harmony, Nokia, PDA, c)
- Web Interface
- 3rd Party Computer Interface (Moose, JRMC, c)

I use standard remote 99% of time, it's quick and efficient, I mostly
browse by folder and play full albums and all this is working fine.

Sometimes, I use my Palm LifeDrive (WiFi) to access the Web interface
but only for show off effect as it's vague and fuzzy ...not all
functions are working well.
Up to now, I doesn't understand the real potential of Web interface,
except rescan function all the rest is useless to me, it's just to
complexe to play with, i.e. I don't catch the play list stuff, so I
don't use it.

As I'm not running my PC/server 24/7, I first need to boot and launch
SS6.5 prior powering the SB3, which is always cut from the power line
while not in use.
I would by fare prefer having some server functions like rescan,
server launch and shut down available by direct access from the
remote to avoid to be in front of the PC to do this.

[slim] SB2 Cutting Out with SS 6.5.1

2007-01-23 Thread cumry

Hi there,
I could not find a thread on this ...

I was wondering if anybody could help me. Yesterday I updated to
SS6.5.1 and updated my Squeezebox 2 as well, but now it does not seem
to be working :-( The squeezebox cuts out after between 5 seconds and 3
mins or so. In fact it seems like the SB has a power shortage and
restarts/reboots up completely. Anybody know why this may be? It was
working fine with SS 6.5. And 6.5.1 is working fine via softsqueeze on
the PC.

I have not altered any setting at all. It is connected wirelessly and I
am using Windows (XP) OS.

Also I am a novice with both PCs and Slimserver!

Many thanks!

Leigh

It is as the name suggests - it fades one song out while it fades the
next song in. Devide the crossfade time to know how far before the end
of the current song it will start fading out the song and how long it
will take to fade the next song in to full volume.

[slim] No radio streams or RSS feeds after upgrade

2007-01-23 Thread johnco

Have just upgraded my Win2k box to 6.5.1. Works ok except no radio
streams connect nor do the RSS feeds work. I also upgraded my SB3's (4
off) to the latest release set Softsqueeze to v3.3.

My Linux box, which I use only as a back up, is still running 6.5.0 and
everything is still fine - even though the SB3's are now one release
ahead.
Any suggestions for how I start to debug the problem?

Thanks,

John

Guess what... with the squeezebox and slimserver I don't...
The following would not exist if an AAE used the same logic as the

It never came to your mind that if I (we) do not get it is because

I think you miss my point. Of course SD has great devices, I own myself

YOu're not able to use the webinterface anymore and therefore stuck to

I am not a apple fan but I love the coverflow feature. I wish it could

[slim] Sound breaking up and distorting

2007-01-23 Thread liffy99

Until last night, everything was working just fine. Now, several seconds
after I start playing any track, the sound distorts and breaks up
severely.
I'm guessing that the several seconds delay might be something to do
with a cache emptying somewhere, but why the sudden symptoms.
The bandwidth figures shown in Slimserver (and my broadband connection)
all seem OK.
I'm using FLAC files and streaming these as .wav, letting the PC do the
conversion rather than the Squeezebox.
Anyone experienced similar symptoms ?
Thanks

Dito on the Apple fan part. You are not alone at thinking that the web
gui is awfully slow and not really that fancy looking. At the same
time I am a firm believer in having a home server which is on 24/7 and
not requiring your desktop computer to be on just to play some music. I
wish that SS would be more layered (i.e. core functions separated from
the web gui).

To overcome the limitations of the web gui, I have been thinking about
making a very simple client application (or even a new web application)
to quickly be able to browse my collection from a PDA or a computer. To
interact with SS I would just create URL strings and do background HTTP
GETs (ignoring the output).

Personally I think that SS must be made more sexy to increase its
appeal to the general public. People want coverflow. Let's not
underestimate the amount of audio fidelity that people at large are
willing to sacrifice for nicer looking GUI.

If you are streaming WAV that's pretty much worst case for the wireless
network - perhaps you have a new source of interference nearby?

Try setting the server to allow it to send FLAC streams instead of WAV,
that's a little bit easier ... or a different wireless channel.

That would be a great idea. We already have Moose and SlimRemote, but
they're hardly full featured or easy to use/install. Hint: Have a look
at http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php guys. It's not that hard to make
a nice install package.

BTW, I think that the CLI interface is better suited for communicating
with SlimServer.

Personally I think that SS must be made more sexy to increase its

I don't know coverflow, and I'd like to keep the existing webinterface,
but a fast, friendly and flashy GUI client would do a lot for the looks.
Let's face it, if you want to show off your SB/Transporter, you show
people the device and the Web IF. The first looks good, the second looks
somewhat clunky.

It might not be such a bad idea to add Airport Express compatibility to
the SB/Transporter firmware. It's another feature to put on the box and
could be quite handy in some situations. Or wait, I take that back. A
Windows or OS/X sound device driver that can talk directly to a Slim
Device would probably be best. That way you can use iTunes or whatever
client you like to play whatever sound you like. I'd like to use that
myself occasionally.

In short, no.

Just looked at it. Interesting, but it's basically a coverflow
knock-off designed for use only in Windows Vista. That doesn't fit into
the slimserver architecture in any way that I can see.

They use Amazon's search API to auto-download cover art and save to
their app, which I can almost guarantee violates copyright law in one
way or another. I use Amarok on my desktop PC, and the cover manager in
that app (that I loved) dropped support for grabbing images from the US
Amazon site, presumably for this reason. It still accesses outside-US
Amazon sites, but my frequency of hits on album cover art has dropped
considerably.

I'd love to see an album art downloader integrated into slimserver, but
I'm willing to guess that it's copyright law that prevents such a

I am not sure that I have all of the requirements that I was looking

You see I am a Brit living in the US. Premiership football matches are

that if I could get my brother (in the UK) to install Slimserver and

You're a firm believer in having a home server which is on 24/7. Which
can be a desktop computer. Which you can run SlimServer on.

Yet you're against having a desktop computer to be on just to play some
music? I must've missed something, but don't you already have a 24/7
server? So you don't need a desktop computer to play music anyway,
SlimServer is running off your server. What do you need the desktop
for if you have SlimServer running on your server?

I must have misunderstood.

[slim] Re: Slim server window won't open???

2007-01-23 Thread Ron F .

I am not sure that I am being helpful here, but when I upgraded from
6.5.0, to 6.5.1, I found that the browser window would not open for me
either.

What turned out to be the problem was that the Norton personal
firewall that came installed on my computer was blocking internet
access for 6.5.1, after the upgrade had been made. This seemed to be
the case, even for localhost which I don't think ever leaves the
confines of the computer!

Pretty frustrating for me, since I am a music-listener, and NOT a
computer debugger.

[slim] Re: Upgraded to 6.5.1 and NO SOUND

2007-01-23 Thread damned006

As i said, just moved back to 6.5.0 and it works, only radios are a bit
more difficult to get.

let me just say, as a SB3 lover, how pain in the ass is Slimserver. I
just can't understand how the official release can't just work properly
!! Is it really to much to ask ??

I'm very aware of all the good work being done around here by many
people but none other 300 bucks product is so difficult to use
properly.

I spent so many hours just try to figure out why i had X number of
files in my hard drive and itunes but Y files with slimserver. When
it's not the No Genre problem or the error radio problem and now the
no sound problem.

You just have to try and try again different setup. How come ?

Sorry for the Coup de geule but it becomes a love hate feeling but
more important it's so time consuming, sometimes i just want to use my
cd player again and just get rid of the thing (and i just spent 2
months every night riping my entire cd collection).

Anyway, thanks for all the people trying to help around here, even if i
still dont know why this fuc... 6.5.1 doesn't play alac files.

[slim] Re: Support for cue files in m3u files

2007-01-23 Thread Yayita

So, I checked how slimservers creates it's own m3u, when calling long
media files with cue sheets. The songs in the cue are called with this
format:

Example:
file:///M:/ClassicRock/Led%20Zeppelin/(1975)%20Physical%20Graffiti/Led%20Zeppelin%20-%20Physical%20Graffiti%20(Disc%202).flac#527.1333-653.6933

Can someone explain to me what those numbers
[#527.1333-653.6933] mean (seconds???) to see if I can
translate my playlists to these format.

Can I translate my m3u file?

Help!!

[slim] Re: Getting rid of slimserver

2007-01-23 Thread brucegrr

Are people really having trouble with Slimserver keeping up with 500
albums? Seems that there would a problem Other than Slimserver to cause
that. I have 14,000 songs that Slimserver can access and it never has
a problem. The only slowness I ever see is when I initially browse my
music via album cover. Slimserver will be a little sluggish for a bit
(15 seconds) but then it is fine.

It seems some on this thread want a swiss army knife approach to their
music. One program to do everything. As a long, long time computer user
I have found that rarely is this approach a good one. I think Nero is a
good example. Their recent release has everything but the kitchen sink
(and it is in there somewhere I suspect)IMO the program is bloated and
the extras they have crammed into the program are not as good as
separate programs that can be bought elsewhere.

The sad fact is most of the features software companies put in the
programs are never used. They do it to justify an upgrade I like the
fact that Slimserver does its job and does it well. Just like EAC and
mp3tag.

Few of us can do a lot of things well. Better to focus on what we can
do well and excel at it. I like software that takes the same approach.

Do you have Lame installed and available to AlienBBC/Slimserver?

RadioIO is already in MP3 (at least i'm pretty sure it is) so
SlimServer just send that stream directly to the player. AlienBBC
transcodes the RealAudio streams with MPlayer to get them to play. By
default it is streamed as FLAC to SB2/3 and WAV to SB1. You need to get
it to stream as MP3 to the Nokia

Thats what I can't understand - Radioio works fine, Lame is installed
on slimserver(6.5 on XP), RTSP set to mp3 only and confirmed when
playing stream to Squeezebox3.
I've tried bitrate limit of 128kbps, but the N800 media player just
sits there.
My flac'ed music streams fine which must mean an mp3 conversion
Thanks for your reply by the way.

Bingo! Nero is a great example, it's never worked for me from the
get-go. Same with ZoneAlarm, I used to like it but when they started
bundling anything and everything with it, it started getting unstable
for me.

Core competency - let programs do what they do best and don't combine
them. EAC's core competency is ripping. SlimServer's is serving audio
to Squeezeboxes.

Do not put ripping functionality in SlimServer - it'll never be as good
as EAC and you just end up increasing the bloat and instability. Same
with tagging - the SlimServer development team couldn't hope to come up
with something as good as Mp3tag. Nor should they, concentrate work on
where it is needed,

I partitaly agree. but softawre companies must answer all the needs from
lots of different users. that's why they cover so much and some of us
want some, others want other. This leads to your swiss knife.
To some up only for my personnal case, pushing music from server
(itunes for its graphical gui) is what i would like, I don't give any
interest into all displays onto the SB/TP.

May my target would be a tablet PC with itunes on it driven by fingers.
But itunes does not link to SB. So, I was expecting a hacked firmware
correcting this aspect. Might come one day. I could event help if
necessarty because I fell sure this to be faisable.

 I must have misunderstood.

The home server is quite different from a desktop computer.

In my world a desktop computer at home is the computer most people
would see as the computer. I don't know about you but I have yet to
experience a desktop computer with a performance that I can live with
that is quiet. Also they tend to draw a lot of power. Hence, the
desktop computer is usually offline. Running a 3GHz+ computer in order
to shuffle 1Mbps of data over the network also seems like a complete
waste of CPU.

The home server is totally different. It's a computer that is on all
the time. Doesn't draw much power and therefore doesn't require any
fans. Personally I have two mini-itx computers, running Ubuntu Linux
and ClarkConnect respectively.

A lot of people are getting NAS boxes, not specifically for Slimserver
but because it makes sense to store data on a home network. Much of the
recommendations in these forums makes suggestions about all-in-one boxes
acting both as NAS and SS (e.g. Infrant). Perhaps it would make sense to
make a pre-configured SS running on a Soekris or a PC Engines WRAP that
would just find any shares on the network and make that music
available. If only SS didn't require so much resources.

Another thought: Why not recommend people that find it difficult to use
EAC/Flac or similar to use Windows Media Player and encode to WMA
lossless. They could then be provided with an application that
transcodes the WMA file to Flac, store it on a NAS, copying cover art
and tag information before the original WMA file is deleted.

Sounds great - I'd love to play with the mini-ITX stuff or even the
PC104 stuff. And yes, I agree that conventional computers are far too
noisy. If I was to go this route I'd go totally fanless all the way.
It's difficult to find all these parts, you'd have to go with a fanless
mini-ITX board along with a fanless laptop-brick-type power supply.
These parts are out there - they're not easy to find or cheap, but
they're out there.

I just didn't understand why you feel you needed a desktop computer for
use with SlimServer if you already had a dedicated server running SS.
SlimServer would work very well on a mini-ITX server setup. I was
wondering what you needed the desktop for after that.

Again, I must have misread.

I have the EXACT same problem with 6.5.1. My Itunes collection is made
up of 440GB of Apple Lossless files and no matter what I do, whether it
be a fresh XP install or existing, the SB2 acts like it will play but no
sound is made. 6.5 and lower work ok. I have disabled all firewalls that

The media player on the N770 was a version of RealPlayer - and I guess
it is the same for N800.

I think you should also try to use the BBC's listen again facility
through the browser from the BBC web site. If that works then all
AlienBBC facilities are available natively on the N800.

It mounted my disk on a Windows XP machine via USB, and reads every

This is a great bit of software - highly reccomended!

to start a Real browser plugin rather than the media player.

Doing a quick google - it seems that there is no RealPlayer plugin for
the Opera on the N770.

I am not familiar with Opera but some browsers let you launch an
external player, if a plugin is not available. If this choice is not
offered - then you have a reason for using Slimserver/AlienBBC.

[slim] Re: Introducing..... me!

2007-01-23 Thread mrchrispy

Not much new for me to add, but wanted to be another voice in the chorus
of people looking for a slick ui on the computer side. In an ideal
world iTunes would be able to actually drive the squeezebox since
millions of iPod users have made it the most widely accepted standard
out there (itunes isn't perfect, but it's close for the vast majority
of users).

Related to the above point I'd like to see some way to initiate a
limited rescan on specific items. For instance if I've just corrected
a tag in some way I'd like to ask Slimserver to rescan that album
rather than just generically telling it to look for new and changed
music and waiting for it to finish.

Would love to see Logitech also take on improving the Nokia 770 skin as
a full time job - I've been watching that develop and it's nearly at a
point where I'm considering picking up a Nokia 800 (or maybe a UMPC).
That said, hats off to Ben for taking it as far as he has on a
volunteer basis.

2007-01-23 Thread RiccardoR

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31930

Question: Do you use your Slim Devices equipment wired or wirelessly?

- All wired
- All wirelessly
- I have several units, some operate wired, some wireless

My first SB1 (Graphic) was wired (to save some money beacause my HiFi is
near the router); my second SB3 is Wireless but is now in the same
place, wired as main HiFi player. So the SB1 is now travelling
through my house: my daughter room, cabled with CAT5 and my kitchen
were I use a Netgear homeplug but (I ask You) the slowness of homeplug
don't permit to sincronize the SB's (?).
So I'm waiting Logitech to start the distribution also here in Italy
and buy another SB3 (or SB4 !!) without the weight of duties and import
taxes.

Today I upgraded from 6.2.1 to 6.5.1 and I'm having no problems playing

What processes do you see running when your music is playing an ALAC
track? I have flac.exe and alac.exe.

Lame is needed if you need to convert a stream into MP3. The main cases
are

1. Destination device is a SliMP3 or possibly SB1
2. Want to use bit rate limiting (e.g. connecting an SB to Slimserver
over internet)
3. Want to send a Slimserver stream to a non Squeezebox device device
(e.g. PDA)

What OS are you using ?

[slim] Re: lesson Learned with RAID 5 Implementation

2007-01-23 Thread exile

an unfortunate way to learn about the vulnerability of RAID.

my two cents: I'm a television editor and the use of raids for storing
and quickly accessing massive amounts of video/audio media is
commonplace. what's also commonplace is Raids failing. Every company
I've ever worked for has gone through failed raid arrays.

In television, the media on the raid drives is always expendable and
therefore we don't back it up. the source tapes can always be
re-digitized if something goes wrong with the computer. but with
personal media it's very different.

It sounds dull but being paranoid and contantly backing up personal
media is a must for peace of mind and to minimize the headaches when
those drives eventually fail you.

Use either the Tune in URL from the web interface and enter the proper
URL (which should be something like:
http://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/whatever .. thats basic HTTP
authentication). You can also add those stations to your Favorites
from the player itself (pressing the right arrow).

You could also make a playlist that had your station in it.

I use my di.fm premium all the time. There is nothing to setup.

There are 2 ways to do this:

1: right-click save the stream link to a file and save the file in your
playlists dir on your slimserver and hit rescan.

2: right-click save the stream link to a file and open it with a text
editor and copy/paste the link with your username/password into the
