Re: [slim] Is it possible to export playlists to an MS Word or Excel file?

2008-01-18 Thread ceejay

Well, there is a really simple solution that might be good enough. Just
press dowload in the playlist pane in slimserver: it will create an
m3u file. The open this file with Word or whatever.

It will be a list of full file names: if your music library is
organised by artist/album/track then you are very nearly there

not be compatible with the new controller. Is this correct? Hoping
that someone from Logitech is reading and can give me some tips on
which NAS boxes to look at.

This is probably best discussed in the Third Party board. Remember
that SC7 isn't released yet - presumeably this will be linked to the
release of the new hardware products in some way. Third parties that
have to do integration or testing will always take a while to catch up
- that's the price you pay for having someone else do that work for
you.

If you want to find out when third parties are going to release 7.0
support you'd best ask them directly!

Yes, that would be a way forward for a limited time, and don't update

I was planning to sell my CD player as I hardly use it since I got a
Squeezebox, but I shan't sell it until this is resolved. If Slimdevices
becomes Microsoft I shall consider getting out my CDs from deep storage
and go back to the way I was before I got a Squeezebox. No way would I
let Microsoft into such a significant part of my life.

But even if Microsoft did buy Logitech your existing equipment and
software would continue working.

I bought a SB1 3 years ago and I have just upgraded to a Transporter.
There is no way I would stop using my Transporter and go back to
playing CDs. The Transporter is just too convienient. I have instant
access to all my music (almost 30,000 tracks)and can select individual
tracks. I very rarely play a complete album any more.

It is true that there are other products in the market doing the same
thing as Slim Devices, BUT none of the ones I have seen (including
Sonos)have all the features and/or sound quality that Slim Devices
offer. I'm sticking with Slim Devices and even if Microsoft do buy

I think paranoia is taking over a bit TBH. MS are no better/worse than
any other business in my working experience. Most will do what they
want to get where they want to be; MS just happens to be huge so comes
under more public scrutiny and it seems to be the thing to criticise
them. For me personally I have no beef, I have 3 machines at home that
all hum along nicely and all do what they should reliably. In work
(both within and without IT) I have to use their products through
popular demand and generally have no issues. That's a whole other
story though.

As far as DRM, even if they somehow maniplated things so that every
piece of music from now till doomsday had some form of DRM applied, I
still have 1000 CDs in my loft with none; I seriously doubt they'll
'fix' things so that all CDs ever previously produced won't play on
their hardware/software.

As a consumer I have a choice whether to buy music under the evil RIAA
umbrella or independent music, and again I seriously doubt MS would
change things to such an extent that a non-DRM WAV file is unplayable.
Millions of previous recordings, mobile ring-tones, personal diary audio
blogs, whatever suddenyl unplayable - don't see it myself.

can't think of a single advantage it would give to anyone, MS included,
to have to transcode non-DRM formats to DRM soley for transmission to

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-01-18 Thread Timinator

Took me two days to get caught up with this thread!

Respectfully; lot's of you guys are audiofile nerds, which is
great/fine.

Let me tell you, the Duet, out of the box, is a great thing for the
rest of mankind. I've been struggling with a Cd30 WIFI system for the
last couple of years. When if works, it's fine, but still you have no
Wifi remote and my amp that powers all these indoor and outdoor
speakers is on the first story. We basically live on and listen to
most of the music on the second story. The new controller will enable
us to access and control the music for the first time. We can't wait.

With the Cd30, I had their software running continously on the
downstairs computer with about 50GB's of music on it. The Crown amp
runnig the whole house stereo/speakers is controlled by an X10
electrical switch with remote from anywhere around the house. Whenever
you want to listen to music, you just turn of the amp via X10 remote
(which are cheap)

Sound quality if just fine for this system as I'm not trying for
anything but background music as we go about our day or for parties.

Thanks for all the great posts, I learned tons and will buy the Duet as
soon as it's avaialbe.

Tim

I wonder how you input text to perform a search function. No clue on
 that wiki page.

use scrollwheel to pick from a column of letters. scrolling moves the
column, so the cursor is always centred vertically. Then pick the
character with the middle button and repeat. First character is so you
just hit the centre button on that and it enters the string. It's not bad
once you get used to it (initial tendancy is to overshoot). Not something

Hmmm... Good question. If the Music Folder is specified on the Lenovo
using a UNC path, then the paths in the database will end up being UNC
paths. I think that _should_ (maybe:) work from the LinkStation
itself. Playlists, though, I'm not so sure about.

Re: [slim] Slimserver seems to break albums by genre

2008-01-18 Thread jezbo

Forget genre - that turned out not to be the issue, but the folder
location of the files is.

I doubt I'm in a 1% minority. True enough, most of my real albums are
stored in the same directory (except when I have downloaded one or two
tracks then later downloaded the rest of the album on the strength of
those), but I also like to collect tracks together and tag it with the
same Album name so that it will appear as an album eg. Mozart is the
artist, Concertos is the album - and these are rarely if ever in the
same folder (and I don't want to have to move them - iTunes wouldn't
find them).

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the tip. I had a look at the Player Statistics, and I've set
some thresholds : 40% signal strength (I generally get 50-70%) and 2
messages in the control connection. Does this sounds reasonable?
I can't really set any thresholds for buffer fullness because it varies
all the way from 1 to 20 as its playing songs.
I'll wait until I get problems and look at the log again.

The idea is that my main SC machine is a Buffalo LinkStation, which
streams just fine but takes almost an hour to scan my ~4000 track
library of FLAC. I also have SC on a new-ish Lenovo laptop running
Ubuntu that scans that same library on the LS in less than 8 minutes
(*and that's over the network*, versus the local scan the LS is taking
an hour to do). Sometimes it would be convenient to do the scan on the
Lenovo, and then copy the necessary files over to the LS. Can this be
done, and if so, how? TIA.

I suppose it could be done by scanning and copying the database files
over to the other computer (shutting down both SlimServer and MySQL
while copying). But that'd be pretty ugly and more than a little prone
to problems. Better would be to export the MySQL database using
mysqldump.exe on the Lenovo and then import the dump into MySQL on the
LinkStation.

Better yet would be to have the scanner running on the Lenovo directly
access the database running on the Linkstation. Probably will be a
little slower than running everything on the Lenovo, but you'll have to
see.

Never done this myself, but...

First, you'll need to be sure the MySQL server on the LinkStation is
accessible from other computers, not just from the LinkStation. You
could test it by using something like SQLyog ('download'
You'll need the IP address of the server, the MySQL port (standard is
3306), the database name (probably slimserver), the MySQL user name
(again, probably slimserver) and the password (by default, blank).

Then create a prefs files for the scanner.pl on the Lenovo that
references the database on the LinkStation. Copy the current prefs
file to another folder, then edit it, changing the lines for the
database connection that look something like:

Code:

dbpassword: somepassword
  dbsource: dbi:mysql:hostname=127.0.0.1;port=3306;database=slimserver
  dbusername: slimserver

Enter all the specifics for the LinkStation MySQL database for
SlimServer.

Then run the scanner.pl on the Lenovo with the /prefsdir switch
pointing at the folder holding the new prefs file. If you run
scanner.pl with no arguments on the Lenovo it will display syntax and
additional command line options for things like logging and debugging.

Code:

  C:\C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\scanner.pl --wipe
--prefsdir:C:\altscprefs \\LinkStation\musiclibrary

If it wasn't clear you need to have Squeezecenter* installed on laptop
A, and then enable/install Softsqueeze as Schatzy noted. You should now
be able to play your music library on the stereo if the laptop is
connected to it. I'm not sure exactly how you iTunes fits in, but there
are options for configuring it in the setup wizard IIRC.

* This is the beta version, but you may as well get used to the
interface as it will be released with and required by the Duet.
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/7.0/
The Windows Executable file will work with WinXP.

The good news is you don't need to install SqueezeCenter on laptop B.
You can control the Softsqueeze laptop with laptop B by opening a web
browser and going to http://Laptop A's IP:9000. You can get Laptop
A's IP by going to Settings at the bottom right of SC, and looking in
the Status panel. It should look something like
http://192.168.1.34:9000.

To control Softsqueeze with the iPhone see this thread:

Let us know how/if it works.

speed of up to 15MB sec (usually runs about 12MB) while the upload
speed is only 768KB (usually runs around 680KB).

You can check this at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Click on one of the cities nearest you and when it has finished it will
give you two numbers one is the download speed the second is the upload
 speed.

If your upload speed is less than 800KB you may have a problem,
especially trying to run two streams.

Also does your wife find that it is a certain time of day that this
happens like shortly after school lets out?

I know in my neighborhood when school lets out and all the children
arrive home the upload and download speeds go down dramatically. This
is caused by the amount of traffic on the system. The more traffic the
 slower everyone gets.

Also what is the streaming bit rate?

I have tried to stream 360kbs tracks and it does not work well even on
the 768 upload because of the overhead data that is required.

So check your speeds and answer a couple other questions and i will try
to help you try to get this sorted out.

 Speed Upload?
 Speed Download?
Time of day it is the worst?
 bit rate of your tracks?

 Schatzy

OK tested at the worst time which is 10-11AM. In addition my daughter
is home, so no knowing what she might be sharing. (This is not normally
the case).

Up = 493 kpbs
Down = 7684
TOD = 10-11AM
bit rate = 192 kbps (for both streams)

which is much lower than what I had it. I had my wife down to this
level with myself still at 320. I had no issues, she had issues. I
lowered mine and it didn;t seem to help hers at all.

Also while testing, I was running 2 SS streasms as well as the SB3 (and

I am actually more concerned about the fact that very few download

this situation changing either, with so many people owning iPods and
happily downloading MP3s, there is nothing to encourage iTunes, amazon

the time. Resetting the sb3 (by holding down the remote on/off button)
just means that it resets and fails to connect to slimserver (rest of
networking is ok though). Only option is to reboot the NAS as I can't
even connect to slimserver from my laptop. Hence question 1)

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Simon

What are they going to do, add support for Zune DRM? Great! Lot's of
people have been asking for that - maybe they could do PlaysForSure
while they're at it. It's not like they can magically add DRM to
mp3/flac/ogg.

And as for screwing up the server, three letters - GPL.

[slim] using a different computer to scan library

2008-01-18 Thread aubuti

Is there a way to scan the music library on a computer other than the
one that is running SS/SC? I vaguely recall some posts about this from
back around the time the scanner was split off to a separate process in
SS 6.5.0, but I can't find them now.

TIA.

No, there must be a scanner.exe file. Try running the installer again

Sorry to question it, but you do have windows, The latest version, and
there is a scanner.exe in the same directory as the scanner.pl ?

I thought most of slim was done with perl script like scanner.pl ?

It seems that your upload speed very low. Also if you add 192 + 192 =
384 + overhead is getting very close to the upload speed. If you can
try an experiment (it may sound lousy) by dropping your bit rates to
92kpbs for a day or two to see what happens. if this clears the problem
up then it is the upload speed that is causing your problem.

If this test doe not help, as Siduhe said there may be something
running your wifes computer that is interfering with the stream such as
Anitvirus or Antispyware software. Another posiblity is that there is a
back network card of cable connecting here computer to the network.

Many thanks!. I believe the CPU should be fine (2.8 dual core, 2 gigs
ram, 2 TB RAID 0+1) as it is fairly stout and dedicated. ...
Checked it, with 2 streams and the SB3 running my computer CPU usage is
 3% with 364meg of 2 gig used.

As you had stated in an earlier post your processor and its usage
should not be a problem.

To solve the track sorting problem with tracks with other artists
featuring, I have to change quiet a lot of the query code. Actually I
have to split the query into returning all the results as it does now,
the process them and determine if it is to be marked as Various album
or not. I will also use the followong algorithm;
If an artist performed more than half of the songs and also features in
the other songs (with other artist featuring) that that artist is marked
as Album Artist. Finally when all this is done the total recordset will
have a trustfull Album Artist column which can be sorted on.

I think this will work quiet well and even eliminate the use for
specifying the compilation folder. But this will cost some time though
to implement and test so bare with me on that one please.

I would also like to ask which new features you would like to see
implemented? I'll collect them all and see which are implemented in the

I find that it does exactly as you stated above it drops teh mapped
