Exactly what feature are you trying to get that is not in the current
available dnf -y update version? LMS 7.9.1 is fairly up to date. So if
there isn't something specific you HAVE to have in the latest Nightly,
don't bother with Nightly's.

SSH into Vortexbox and then run:

dnf clean all

followed by 

dnf -y update

You will be running the latest "Tested" stable LMS 7.9.1 on your
Vortexbox. No need messing around with the other unless there is
something specific for something specific you are trying to do that
isn't in the latest dnf -y update version pulled down. But from your
error message it looks like one of two things happened, either you
didn't get the "copy link location" correct or the server it is located
on was down or had no path to your Vortexbox over the Internet.

Just a note that I installed VB 2.4 on one of my vortexboxes and Spotty
now authorizes and works as expected.  The only hassle I had was that I
could never get the VB 2.4 install to start from booting from the
"bootable" USB drive where I had saved the install files.  In the end, I
just downloaded the VB 2.4 ISO file, then created a version of that on a
CDR using IMGBURN.

The size is at the limit so had to tell IMGBURN to overwrite if it

Keep in mind that putty won't work for you when doing the actual install
on the VB. You'll need a monitor and keyboard actually attached to the
VB.

I'll know more after Sunday afternoon when I go through this. But I
already created the bootable USB.

Save this zip file to your desktop:
http://iso.vortexbox.org/vortexbox24-release-20151125.zip

Then unzip this file to your USB thumb drive.  

Then on your USB thumbdrive, navigate to this drive on your windows file
explorer and find:
/utils/win64

Wikthin this subdirectory, locate this file and click on it to run.
makeboot64.bat

You should see a few popup screens, but it will eventually tell you that
you've made a bootable USB drive.

You'll need to do all this first before beginning the install procedure.
You'll also need to connect a keyboard and screen to your Vortexbox
before doing the install.

No, because if you do, it will try to install the Vortexbox version of
7.9 rather than the newer version that you have.  What this means is:

1. You can't use the "update" button from the Vortexbox web interface.
2. Instead you get the same updates by using command line to update, but
as noted, you have to do the following:
dnf clean all; dnf --exclude=logitechmediaserver* update
(this way, the update won't affect your LMS 7.9.1.

You are trying to install the windows LMS above. Instead, you need to
install the package for the vortexbox (red hat). The link for the latest

Thanks Thomas for your comment.  Yes, I rebooted but no LSM.  I am using
vortexbox OS version 2.4.  I can google the IP address of the vortexbox
and I get the Vortexbox main menu.  When I click on the LSM icon, I get
the message "This site can not be reached".  Do I need to erase and
reinstall LSM?  If so, what commands do I use?  Can I use the Wiki
instructions for "How to Install LMS 7.9 from the Slim Devices Nightly
Repo on VB 2.3" even though I am using VB 2.4?

Apologies if this is too obvious, but have you rebooted your vortexbox
since installing the update? If so, can you still not reach LMS after

Did you get the 7.9.1 update? If so, I may not fully understand your
problem and keep in mind that my software skills are very limited so I
don't think I can offer further assistance, perhaps others with more
knowledge can assist or perhaps you should post the question on the
Vortexbox user form.

Provided that you are connected to the internet, on my Vortexbox I just
type in the Vortexbox IP address in Microsoft Edge and the Vortexbox GUI
comes up, at this point I just click on the Squeezebox Server icon and
the Logitech server (LMS) starts up. I don't have to sign-on to LMS
other than the one time during initial set-up. In any event LMS should
start as far as I know.

I believe the command would be: *dnf erase squeezecommunity-repo* 

Run the command, reboot and then try the *dnf clean all* followed by
*dnf up**date* to see if you get the 7.9.1 update

I'm not sure if this will solve the previous posters problem but I ran
into a similar problem when I tried to update one of my Vortexboxes a
few months ago. In my case it was due to still trying to use the
'Squeeze Community' repo that Clive (JackOfAll) used to maintain. It
seems that Clive has moved on and no longer supports his frequent
updates for us Vortexbox users and for some reason his repo was blocking
some of Andrews updates.

In my case I solved the problem by removing the 'Squeeze Community' repo
using the 'dnf erase' command.

Once the repo was removed I was able to update to the latest versions
that Andrew provided.

Again, your mileage may vary.

So, I have set up my VortexBox now. Instead of building a new box, I
reused an old ASRock ION 330 I found and upgraded it to 4 GB of RAM
instead of 2 GB and put in a 2 TB harddisk. So far, everything runs
smoothly. The only issue I have is with the Player (is it a
LocalPlayer?) that it offers. It only plays audio through the headphone
jack, but the ASRock box also has an optical out (SPDIF). How do I
configure ALSA audio under Fedora? In the web interface under "Configure

then click the download button and right click Fedora 64-bit (RPM for
Fedora 14 or newer) and click copy link location.

Then in Putty on your Vortexbox, type dnf install and right click, to
get 

dnf install

Finally, reboot and the new Plex will be available.

Just read that post, thank you. I will mostly be working headless
through ssh anyway. Exept for the ripping. That's how I handle my
existing LMS dedicated Box already.

I have a few tweaks applied to my VB which I would recommend you look
into

I heavily modified the ripping config file - etc/ripit/config - to use
an artist/album structure, dispense with .m3u playlist files and some
over stuff. The instructions for this are still available in the Vb wiki
at http://wiki.vortexbox.org/cd_how-to_s

I also switched off immediate re-scanning of my library as I found that
the headless nature of the CD rip could throw up problems from time to
time that I wanted the opportunity to correct before re-scanning. You do
this by commenting out line 37 of /opt/vortexbox/post-rip-process

the vortexbox updates don't pick up the7.9 nightlys. it uses and older
version.  There are instructions above in this thread to switch to
installing the 7.9 nightly version.

I  roughly assembled the machine to test VortexBox 2.4. Runs smoothly,
did also some test rips. Looks good, muich easier for casual ripping (my
CD library is completely ripped already, so I would only do a CD from
time to time).

I also noticed that 2.4 comes already with LMS 7.9. Which is nice--but I
haven't got any update messages yet. I assume, it updated to the latest
nightly when I first updated VortexBox after the initial install. Or do
I have to manually install the latest nightly?

I really have no clue about these comparisons. I've always thought that
the preassembled stuff and SOtM stuff is definitely premium priced. One
can likely do it themselves much cheaper. But I think of it as paying
for convenience of turn-key.

Just a last general question: I noticed that there are a few companies
selling pre-assembled VortexBoxes. Some come even either with this SOtM
USB PCIe card  or a soundcard like the Juli@ (newer version of my Maya).
Does VortexBox support these ootb? The Maya does 24/192 output but I
remember from the last time I used it under Debian it's not that easy to
get it to work: It's only supported by ALSA and SPDIF output never
works. The latter is no problem, since if I use the card, I would use
the analogue out anyways.

Today I also read for the first time about the SOtM USB PCIe card in one
of Archimago's blog posts. It's an interesting piece of hardware--but is
it really worth the money (350) compared to similar boards from other
chinese manufacturers for about 50?

Hello everyone, since the sites are still down, and some of you here are
fairly experienced with VortexBox, I just ask my questions here. So, I
have a nice HTPC case, some Micro ATX motherboards with dual and quad
core AMD processors and up to 8 GB of RAM, some 2TB WD Green hdds, and
even an unused ESI Maya 44 sound card as an option in storage (but most
definitely, the box would be connected via USB to a DAC). All have been
used in my previous pcs or NAS, and are in very good condition. My goal
now is to build a VortexBox that does the ripping, storage, LMS server
(7.9 is possible, I read), and acts as a local player with my second
stereo rig I'm building in my home office. A nice option would be the
possibility to sometimes listen to a CD directly before ripping. As this
would be an audio only setup, the DVD ripping feature is not needed.

Here we go:
a) Generally, is this still a valid way to go? After all, the sites are
now down for a while.
b) Which version would you suggest? 2.3 or 2.4?
c) Since VortexBox offers the ripping of DVDs, does it need a DVD drive?
Or would an old CD ROM with a reliable laser unit be supported, too? I
have an old Sony CD ROM tray drive here, too.

Thanks in advance for clarifying things for me.

When attempting to use CLI to do a routine update to VB or LMS 7.9, I'm
getting this error message:
Error: Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'updates'
I last updated VB about a week ago with no issues to the 7.9 Feb 16
version. I happened to notice today that the 3rd party plugin list is
missing along with the option button to display them. I tried to update
to the current version but keep getting this error. It is happening with
the basic DNF update command also, so it must be a VB or Fedora issue? 
Anyone else seeing this, or any ideas to troubleshoot?

Perhaps not as many new adopters, given the almost word-of-mouth
approach and lack of any promotion. The many current users likely have
no issues, since it's such a stable setup. I'm sure there are lot's of
VB appliance and software users out there working on ancient versions of
Fedora and VB with no issues and no need to visit the forum. Still, it's
a valuable resource and hopefully it will come back.

I also spoke with Andrew since I was having issues with my upgrade to
Vortexbox 2.4.
Andrew tells me the Sonictransporter AP has all of the features of
Vortexbox and many more, except for MakeMKV.

The VB forums were pretty quiet just before they went down anyway. I get
the sense most folks may have moved on.

It appears that the VortexBox brand is gone and Andrew has replaced it
with the Sonic Transporter brand on his Small Green Computer site. I
emailed him  a few days ago about the forum and he indicated that he is
working to get the VB forum back up. No mention of a time line.

I absolutely love the Vortexbox and really appreciate the help and
patience Ron and Andrew have shown me over the years.  Forum support
also has been a Godsend. I hope it continues and that Small Green
Computers continues to produce some form of Vortexbox Appliance.  The
parts cost almost the same as the complete Appliance with software
loaded and ready to go.

I ended up reinstalling the entire OS from the download file, I now have
all services back.
I still can't upgrade to the latest build of the OS without locking up
the appliance and for some reason MakeMKV does not name the ripped DVD
movies properly, I just get some random file name.
I can live with these two issues until the forums come back.

That is the "Community" version which IIRC is no longer being actively
developed / supported. 
There is (was) a very similar post that told you how to upgrade 2.3 or
2.4 to use the 7.9 Nightly tree - I can't find it now - but once you had
done this you can keep upgrading.
I will post back if I can find it.

While we wait for the VB forums to come back, would anyone here know
what service might be disabled in my Vortexbox 2.4 that is preventing
LMS and Subsonic from running?
Whatever it is, it's preventing me from accessing the appliance via
pUTTY too. All other services are working such as the Home screen,
Bliss, CD ripping, Mp3 mirroring, cover art creation, network access to
music files, etc. I've attached a monitor and screen and all looks
kosher.

I'm at a loss.

I haven't had too many problems with VB2.3 after a clean install (I
think VB2.4 was released to support compatibilty with newer hardware
which wasn't applicable) & any I did have were fixable from searching
the forum - it's my library.

Me threeI've lost count how many times Ron has helped me, hope he
gets well. I upgraded to 2.4 a few weeks ago and have been having a
bunch of trouble. With the forums not having much activity before the
crash and my Linux skills being very basic, I'm thinking it might be
time to move onto another solution...just not sure what that would be
just yet.

Yeah when Ron was involved he was phenomenally knowledgeable, I'd never
have stuck at it without him & a few other Linux geeks. My Linux skills

No, the Spotify issue seems to be related to switching over to support
Spotify Family (so you can have 5 versions of Spotify running
potentially). There is an official version and a protocol handler. There
is also a new 3rd party Spotify family addon as Triode's is now not
being maintained. Try both, see which you prefer.

I did that and it cured operational problems but I lost a couple of
playlists I'd created on LMS Spotify as they'd stopped syncing and I
couldn't find a way of copying the LMS playlists back to Spotify :mad:
The playlists work now but seem to take a good while to load.
