I've seen posts today that Authorize.net stopped supporting older version
of TLS today. So it might be something for folks to keep an eye on if you
use Authorize.net and an older version of CF.

Jeff-

I would look at the network between the browser and the server. Sean
mentioned a load balancer but look for any sort of new caching or network
infrastructure in place. If a cache is misbehaving and not passing along
cookies that could be a problem. Could be caching a null CFID/CFTOKEN pair.
Could be a new proxy scanning network traffic on the network or locally on
end user's machines.

It's interesting that you say 2/3 of the content appears. This smells
almost like you are load balanced over 3 servers and one is misconfigured.
That's a clue too.

If it's been running fine for a year and you didn't change the app, maybe
load just increased to a point where the load balancer finally decided to
send some traffic to another different server in the cluster? Maybe that
server is configured to use JSessions instead of CFID/CFTOKEN? Maybe the
underlying JEE server was changed?

I don't know if any of these ideas lead to something, just suggesting
things to consider in case they lead you someplace.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] CF11 IIS7.5 on different servers

2015-04-30 Thread Cameron Childress
Ajas-

I read this as well as the other emails you sent directly. It does sound
like you are generally heading in the right direction with the
configuration but I haven't done any Distributed Mode instals in several CF
versions so it's hard for me to give more specific advice. The only thing
that does smell a little fishy to me is that you say you had to instal CF11
on both the Web/IIS server and the CF Server. This doesn't sound right to
me. You probably really only need that wsconfig tool on the IIS server but
again I haven't done that config in awhile.

I am curious to know what your motivation is in setting up this
configuration? The web connector for CF has had a lot of issues lately and
I really very strongly suggest taking a look at something like NGINX to
front the site instead of IIS if you are trying to do something truly
distributed. With the web connector you're going to have potential issues
each time you upgrade or patch CF. Usually you have to rebuilt the
connector and jump through some really poorly documented hoops and this
adds up to lots of added friction and wasted time in your deployment
process.

Distributed mode filled a gap once where there were not lots of other
alternatives out there but now there are. NGINX, Apache Traffic Server,
Squid, Varnish... These options are effectively the same thing as
distributes mode but are better supported - and they gives you tons of
power for load balancing and the like.

Here are the most frequent reasons people use distributed mode. Which is
your reason?

1) Security (IIS outside firewall, CF inside)
2) Load Balancing
3) Failover
4) Is sounded cool at the time
5) Boss made me do it

This is called "distributed mode". I haven't done this since the JRun days
and this configuration seems far less common now than it use to be. More
frequently today I seem to see something like NGINX configured in proxy
mode in front of CF instead, cutting IIS/Apache from the picture entirely.

This is not particularly helpful for your immediate problem, but this is
exactly why I would never ever use any of the front end code generation
"stuff" that ships with CF.

In my opinion, your best bet for long term code stability will be to
reformat this code to use ExtJS (Sencha) directly and not use CF's front
end codegen stuff for this. I don't know this for sure but I would bet that
the code you posted is probably 90% of the way there already if you just
remove the ColdFusion scope and change the code to just use straight Sencha
code. Then you can control the library being used and when you upgrade to
CF 12 or 13 you aren't going through this again.

Sorry I'm not more help with this but I would not touch CF's front end code
generation with someone else's 10 foot pole.

Hey everyone,

A few people put their heads together and hatched an idea to create a Slack
<https://slack.com/r/024r1tlk-03jeu3gb> account for the Atlanta Tech
Community.

*So we did, and it's called Tech404 <http://tech404.io>.*

What's Slack? It's a group discussion app that's taking over the world.
Seriously. There are channels for all kinds of stuff; design, HTML, CSS,
development (with channels for each language), business issues, events,
even random cat GIFs.

It's a great low-friction place to chat amongst each other. There's even an
AWDG channel just for you. Feel free to poke around in the different
channels and meet new Atlanta area people.

*Go join the conversations now: http://tech404.io <http://tech404.io>*

I'm in there, see you there soon.

Cheers,

Usually I look at the stack trace to see what path the code took during
execution. What line of what file etc. Sometimes there is valuable info in
there that you don't expect to find.

The error is thrown in the above method. As you can see, there is no
> try/catch in that method so the wrapping try/catch statement should have
> caught anything coming from it.
>

A catch found inside this call could also catch it.

request.dalib.returnOvationsXML()

Since you have a sample of what reproduces the error, I would start by
setting url.id = 'thatbadstring' and then just start replacing code and/or
commenting it out till you narrow the problem down to one line or segment
of code.

Specifically, you may want to zoom in and try wrapping the CFQUERY code in
it's own TRY/CATCH just to see if it will catch the error and then work
your way outside of the function from there till you find the problem.

To answer the abstract question about QoQ and catch block, I don't know of
any problem with QoQ errors not being caught by CFCATCH, but I still
haven't seen all the code involved here so it's very hard to know what else
may be causing the problem in your specific case.

One more side note is that you can use the val() function to quickly
convert anything string-like to a number. Your code may be working for you
and you may want to leave it that way but this (IMHO) is shorter and pretty
well established way to clean numeric inputs in CF.

cleanID = val(url.id);

As I said, there could be other catch blocks in the other libraries. *That*
catch would trap error and prevent *your* catch from catching it.

But answering this question really requires the rest of the code and full
error.

If anyone sees something else, perhaps they will speak up.

Troy-

You haven't really given much detail about your problem. What was the
error? What line of code? What input caused the problem? What about all the
other libraries you are including - what does that code look like?

My first guess would be that one of the libraries you are including has a
catch statement that is not rethrowing the exception...

You may want to use a gist for the code instead of trying to paste it
inline into an email: https://gist.github.com/

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] reasonable and reliable CF Hosting solution?

2014-04-22 Thread Cameron Childress
Jeff-

The two names in ColdFusion hosting that I primarily see talked about the
most frequently by "folks in the know" in the CF Community are EdgeWeb and
VivioTech. Both have specialties in CF hosting and are owned/run by some
pretty old school Guru CF types. These companies don't really do shared CF
hosting, which I 100% agree with. Shared hosting is very problematic on CF
so if that's what you are looking for I am not sure that I am any help
there.

You might also want to check out FusionLink, run by John Mason which is
local here in Atlanta. He is also an old school Guru CF type but I suspect
you already know him.

EdgeWeb: http://www.edgewebhosting.net/
VivioTech: https://www.viviotech.net/
FusionLink: http://www.fusionlink.com/

If you decide to go host in the Cloud (AWS/RackSpace) you might want to
check out RightScale for some interesting management tools.

RightScale: http://www.rightscale.com/

Charlie Arehart has a section in his CF411 site that lists CF hosts if you
want to look at a wider variety of hosts.

http://carehart.org/cf411/

Lastly, I'll say that when it comes to hosting CF, you do tend to get what
you pay for. Cheap is usually the opposite of good (in my personal
experience).

So were there changes to your code? Something changed, somewhere.

Has any of the following recently changed:

- CF Code
- CF Engine Version or Patch Level
- JVM Version or Patch Level
- Server settings
- Network hardware, including switches and routers, or their settings
- DNS server or it's settings?

This really feels like a network issue, though networking is not just the
physical network, it can also be something about the configuration of your
local machine. For example ColdFusion use to cache DNS indefinitely. I am
not sure that it still does, but if your company recently moved to a load
balanced or failover configuration for LDAP, that could be one thing to
look at.

One other side note I will give is that Charles (and probably some of the

It will decode the Flex Remoting data and tell you about all the back and
forth communications. I see (saw) this as a critical tool in any Flex
developers toolbelt. I cannot imagine working on any Flex app without it.

Give it a shot and see if it helps you get to the bottom of this.

Apologies if this was already suggested, but Eclipse in general can be a
little bit "hangy" if you have a whole bunch of projects open. The more
files you have open the more Eclipse has to crawl through when it's
rebuilding your workspace. I'd check to make sure any projects you aren't
currently using are closed. Also, I'd recommend against mapping to a giant
central location on your drive to avoid having to use projects the way
Eclipse intended. I think there is an option to "close unrelated projects"
from the right click menu in Eclipse to cleanly close everything else.

Not sure this is your problem, but "Building Workspace" is what happens
when it's crawling through everything. "Sleeping" probbaly means it's not
actually crawling, but who knows.

Again, this is why I stopped using CFBuilder. I am 100% sure I could have
followed advice of folks like Charlie and gotten CFBuilder to hum along
without any trouble, but I personally don't feel like using an IDE should
be that much work. Any technology I have to constantly fight just to use it
goes into my trash bin pretty quickly now-a-days.

Try what's Charlie described and see if it helps. If it doesn't...

I've found that any Eclipse based IDE is super memory hungry. Flex Builder
was the same. If you can't get CFBuilder working to your satisfaction, you
might also take a look at Sublime Text 2, which I started using exclusively
about a year ago. It uses way less memory, is very snappy, and has CFML
extensions available.

http://www.sublimetext.com/

I'd gotten to the point that I had to give CFBuilder/Eclipse about a third
of my whole machine's memory for it to run and it still paused all the time
for garbage collection. Sublime Text is crazy awesome compared to CFBuilder
in that regard.

What kind of content would you like to see at the Official Adobe ColdFusion
Summit this year October 24, 25 in Las Vegas? Vote and make suggestions
now.

To track what type content you want to see, join this public Trello board.
You will need a free trello account to vote and comment on the board. I
have, what I think, is a good mix of topics. Please help me fill in the
gaps by commenting on the "Suggest Topic" card and please help decide what
topics are most popular by voting on all the topics you like. If you have
suggestions for what kind of content you would like to see on a particular
session, please comment on that topic card.

Things to keep in mind:

   - Sessions should be Adobe ColdFusion centered, but can incorporate
   related technology.
   - Target audience should be assumed to have a basic working knowledge of
ColdFusion. 2 year CF programmer - all the way up to grizzled code veteran.
   - We want a mix of intermediate (tagged green) and advanced topics
   (tagged yellow)
   - We would like to where possible have topics build on each other but
given by different speakers (ORM advanced follows immediately after ORM 101)
   - Vote for topics that *YOU* would truly attend if possible.

I typically try to steer people to 100 of less records on the page at a
time for web based reports. Search / pasing works to help reduce the number
of records on the screen (and sent to the browser) at a time. If they
REALLY want to see more than about 1000 records on a single continuous
page, I push for Excel exports, or in a worst case scenario write it out to
a static HTML file and redirect them there.

At a certain point though, the browser will choke and there is nothing
really technically that can be done about that.

Since I posted my inquiry, a client of mine had a problem with a CF10
server after an update and I suggested rebuilding the connector to fix
it. Unfortunately I'd already forgotten about this thread by then and
I don't remember exactly what the problem was. Maybe 500 server

What is it the problem you've seen happen when the connector is not
rebuilt? Maybe I don't need to rebuild it (I didn't), but I haven't seen
any problems. Just wanting to be aware of what I should be on the lookout
for - something like "When you see your server doing Bad Thing X, that
means you probably didn't rebuild the connectors after an update" - or are
the symptoms too varied to pin down that well?

Out of curiosity what happens if you don't rebuild the connectors after

forgot to rebuild them. Everything seems to still be working. Is it a

I can't help with the Dreamweaver portion of the question, but on a Mac, I
use a stand alone program called "Versions" to manage SVN. It's fairly
popular among Mac users. If you can't find the menus in Dreamweaver you
might have them download at try that out as an alternative option.

This has been mentioned a few times at meetings (I think), but I wanted to
shoot out a reminder for anyone who's interested.

The Atlanta Web Design Group is a confab, multi technology, multidiscipline
group of "webbies", and is quite a hot and popular group that typically
meets around the intown Atlanta area. Remember the days of routine ACFUG
meetings with 50+ people at them? I do. That's what this group is like at
most of their meetings, and they very much focus on the social/networking
aspects of their group. It's a good group to attend. Good people and good
energy.

They are having their annual holiday party on Thursday Dec 20th at Fado in
Buckhead. It's $20 to attend (open bar) and they have 100+ RSVPs.

This is because, generally, there is no rule of thumb here. Different apps
act differently and run smoother under completely different configurations.
Any advice you see out there is probably what someone found on one app -
and that app is almost certainly not your app.

The best advice is to run your app (under artificial load if needed) and
use FusionReactor or similar tools to measure performance differences as
you tune it.

CFLunch is tomorrow at Ri-Ra Irish pub in Midtown! Come join us for

they are welcome to join in!

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] LinkedIn hacked...

2012-06-20 Thread Cameron Childress
I don't think it has any logic to block/lock access after N attempts. CF10
may have changed that, but I don't recall hearing anything.

But your CFAdmin should never be available on the public internet. If you
really want to lock it after N attempts, put it behind an additional layer
of authentication.

To: cf-jobs

Photography software company is looking for someone to join our software
development team. We are seeking a programmer with Cold Fusion
programming skills (3+ year min.). Projects vary from enhancing our event
photography software to developing custom solutions for our customer base.

The candidate will create solutions that will be put directly into working
environments with sometimes only minimal testing; attention to detail and
making things work are necessary to be successful.

Company has offices in Westchester county New York and in the Atlanta area.
As a result candidates from these locations are preferred, however this is
NOT an absolute requirement, since a "work from homeoffice" option will be
considered. Candidate MUST BE A SELF STARTER and have the capacity to
deliver results, clean and well documented code, without the constant
oversite of a manager.

This is a full time position and benefits are available.

Below are additional requirements.
3+ years working with Cold Fusion, comfortable with CF8 and higher.
MS SQL proficiency needed. Comfort with jQuery and/or dojo needed.
Ability to work collaboratively within a creative, fun team, as
well as work autonomously without someone staring over your shoulder.
Ability to work directly with customers to help them with software
deployment.

Salary from 75k based on experience.

Usually, yes.

Spending 2 days writing a magical stored proc that will save you 50ms on a
process isn't exactly a win if it only gets run once or twice a day. On the
other end of the spectrum, if you're calling it 100 times a minute it might
be worth it.

I've seen plenty of projects where the team went completely overboard with
SPs and cramming everything into the DB and ruined the app's
maintainability as a result.

You're really the only one on the list who can answer what the best
solution is for your specific case.

Balance and moderation are good.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] Tricky SQL help?

2012-04-09 Thread Cameron Childress
I don't know your entire problem or system, so I don't know if this would
work for you - but another solution would be to add a column to your
Address table that's called something like "preferred". You would need to
find a clean way to keep the field updated, probably during input of the
address data. Then when you do a select, you can just use that flag and
pull out the right stuff.

This would also give you some flexibility (if you need it) to override your
cascade of address types when needed.

I do kinda have a similar opinion, though I don't mind the WebServer and DB
server running, it's CF and/or Railo that I don't want running all the
time.

So I guess on top of (or as an alternative to) Frank's way of doing things,
I let Apache and mySQL run all the time, but I only start CF/Railo when I
need to, at the command line. This also gives me the added benefit of
having some good debug output on the console for CF errors when and if they
happen (we all write perfect code right?).

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] File Organization for Mac Development

2012-03-02 Thread Cameron Childress
I put CF projects all in the default Apache webroot dir:

/Library/WebServer/Documents/[projectname]

Non-web projects (Flex/AIR/Titanium) I usually just leave wherever the IDE
wants to put them.

I create vhosts entries for each project in Apache and make entries for
each in the hosts file (located at /private/etc/hosts). Usually I use
".local" for these. So if I am working on www.acfug.org, the local
development entry would be www.acfug.local.

That's how I do it...

Obviously everyone has has very different experiences with their own
businesses. This is definitely a case where doing your own research
counts. When all is said and done you are virtually certain to have
*something* you wished you'd done differently. Don't worry about it, just
get well informed and make the choices you think make sense.

It's easy to get stuck worrying that you will do the wrong thing. Don't be
afraid to be wrong and learn from your mistakes. Don't let analysis of the
right answer slow you down on getting started. Forge ahead. No matter who's
advice you take - doing nothing is the worst choice you can make. Just do
it.

Good luck!

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] incorporation advice

2012-02-21 Thread Cameron Childress
You're probably going to want an LLC or an S-Corp. Google around and you
should get some good articles on the pro/cons or each.

Also consider these top of mind questions and notes...

- How are you going to do your accounting?
I use Quickbooks Online for this. QBOE also has a decent time entry tool
that will pull over into Quickbooks invoices
It's also worth looking at: Freshbooks, Tick, Harvest

- Do you need business insurance and what type?
Some corp-to-corp contracts will require certain types and amounts/levels.

- Do you need a standard contract for customers?
Some customers will bring one to you, others will not.

- What Taxes to you need to file and when?
Your CPA should be able to help you with this.

- What Tax deductions can you take?
Your CPA should help you with this. You can deduct all sorts of stuff.

Also, read this "The unfortunate math behind consulting companies":
http://blog.asmartbear.com/consulting-company-accounting.html

And watch this "F*ck You. Pay Me":
http://vimeo.com/22053820

That is a good start.

[ACFUG Discuss] Fwd: CF Developer Needed Atlanta, GA

2011-12-11 Thread Cameron Childress

Subject: CF Developer Needed Atlanta, GA

Ability to work directly with customers to help them with software
deployment.

Salary from 50-75k based on experience.

Is there a reason you cannot just use the jQuery datepicker?

I always try to avoid any default CF client side widgets because the
release cycle for CF (18-24 months) is WAY WAY **WAY** longer then the
typical release cycle for jQuery or any other client side widgets they
typically bundle with CF.

Server side functionality is great in CF, but stuff in the browser is often
easier to manage (over time) using the client libraries directly.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] List Handling

2011-11-02 Thread Cameron Childress
First this I see is to try scoping your "id" var:

If the value of "id" is remaining the same as the first query value, then
it's always going to return 1 as the list position.

You can also output the id value and it's list "pos" as a debug measure if
you want... Either inline or using cflog or similar.

#id#:#pos#

If that doesn't uncover your problem, shoot back an email.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] List Handling

2011-11-02 Thread Cameron Childress
First, as to your actual problem with listFindNoCase() returning 1, I'd say
show your code. There could be a number of logic problems causing this.

However, I think you are going to run into another problem first. Because
of the way CF handles lists, it's a real REAL bad idea to keep long lists
and loop over them or do other things to them in code. The longer a list
gets the longer your loop is going to take - not incrementally, closer to
exponentially.

ColdFusion treats a list just like a string, and when you ask for item 300,
it first has to look for the previous 299 items before it gets to 300. When
you ask for item 301? Yup, goes through all 300 again before finally
settling on item 301. It's much MUCH better to use an array or struct or
any other sort of structured data. A ColdFusion list is not structured,
it's just a real long string.

I've seen apps that take 60+ seconds to render a page that uses long lists.
Once converted to arrays, that same page took <1 second to run.

Your situation might not be as dire, but the longer your list gets the
worse your potential performance problems are going to get. Short lists
are fine, but I wouldn't want a 300+ item list floating around being looped
over. In my previous example, the list was 4,000+ items long.

Show your code or describe what you are trying to achieve and perhaps we
can collectively help you find a better way.

[ACFUG Discuss] CFLunch - Midtown Edition

2011-09-21 Thread Cameron Childress
I know some on the list got a reminder about this already today from the
Meetup site, but in case you didn't - the Midtown CFLunch is going to be a
week from today! I thought we'd change things up a bit this time so I
changed the meeting location to RiRa Irish Pub, which is just across the
street from where we've been meeting (Front Page News).

Also - I wanted to welcome new Atlanta resident Jason Delmore, former
ColdFusion Product Manager, to the ACFUG list (assuming he's joined) and to
our meetup site. You can come to this month's CFLunch in Midtown and you
can welcome him in person as well.

RSVP here: http://www.meetup.com/AtlantaCFUG/events/27813361/

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] Informal poll Who will be at NCDevCon this weekend?

Would love to go, but I'll be in San Diego. Tough call I know, but I had to
go with "beach".

Considering Apple willingly pointed their DNS at shareholder.com,.
I think they are okay with the stylesheet thing.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] HELP with RSS feed not being 'valid'

2011-09-06 Thread Cameron Childress
You would be changing the mime type of rss in the webserver, so it would
affect .rss files that are processed by the webserver (IIS or Apache).
You're just saying "hey webserver, this is an XML text file, send it to the
browser as an XML/text document!". It shouldn't effect other functions.

Here's a primer I found about mime types by searching Google:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en/properly_configuring_server_mime_types
