How to delete blank pages in writer

2024-02-04 Thread Keith N. McKenna

Greetings all;

I am having a problem in Writer deleting blan pages. I am getting ready
to compile the full writer book and have a problem with one of the
files. Because the book has to be compiled manually because of an
outstanding bug, the TOC and all front matter must be deleted form each
chapter file from the file.

when I do that on one chapter, i end up with 3 blank pages at the end or
the file that just not delete no matter what I try.

Cann anyone give me a pointer as to to remove them?

Thanks in advance

It seems that on the pages with the OOoPageStyle style, which is most of
each chapter, the footer should have the chapter title (entered with a
Chapter field, which gets its value from the paragraph with the OOoHeading
0 paragraph style) and the page number, separated with a |. Page numbers go
on the outside margin.
On the pages with the OOoFrontMatter page style, the footer has a Title
field and page number, again separated with |.
Pages with the styles OOoCopyright and OOoFirstPage do not have anything in
the footer.
Is that the right pattern?

Ok, I made some progress. The key is that the page with the Copyright

heading and the pages with the ToC are in section. Here is what I did on a
copy of AOO41WG4.
-
Select the menu Format -> Sections.
Select Section 1 on the left. That is the only section in this document but
others may have more sections
Click Options
Set the background to red
Click OK twice to get back to the document and confirm that the text I want
to delete now has a red background.
Go back to Format -> Sections.
Pick Section 1.
Click Remove.
Click OK
The red background is now gone and I can delete the text and ToC without
generating a blank page.

I noticed that in the Format -> Sections dialog that Section 1 is set to be

Yes, that is what I am seeing. What needs to be done is to delete
everything but the Chapter title and subtitle. To create that blank page
I first select the TOC heading and change it to text body to remove the
the bottom border, then select the copyright page and the entire TOC,
then either cut or hit the delete key.

Everything deletes but leaves a blank page between the tittle page and
the start of the actual text. I have tried most everything I can think

committed some changes on 2023-01-23. Is the version currently in the
Review folder different from the one I fetched on 6/14? I have changes to
AOO41WG2.odt that I have not yet pushed to the main repository and if the
version of AOO41WG3.odt that I have is not up to date, I'll have to
resolve conflicts when I push AOO41WG2.odt.
Regards,
Francis

Francis;

Unfortunately I have made changes to Aoo41WG3, and am not finished doing
the review. This is another one that would crash after trying to
Accept/Reject a change. As a result I had to accept all changes and then
essentially do a complete review. I should have it finished later today
or tomorrow.

Things have been hectic in my personal life the last week or so and it
has limited the time I would normally have for OpenOffice.

Keith

The project is so well done that I have little to suggest in the way of

little.

1.

A glossary, especially of terms (e.g., from pages 11 and 12, odbc; jdbc,
GNU, kernel, and glibc; page 114: regular expression; page 158: Bezler
curves; page 185: database normalization) with which a lot of people might
be unfamiliar, would make *Getting Started* even more useful.

1.

Greater consistency in the presentation of internal links (for instance,
some Figures being shown in the text *before**,* rather than after, the
link to them – such as, on page 273, the reference to Figure 244, which
occurs *after* the Figure itself) would improve workability.

1.

Some more “colloquial” wording might also serve to make less skilled

the oportunity” might be better expressed simply as “allows you to”.

I've got lots more individual items, but those are the basic contexts. Tell

And thanks again for the opportunity …

Michele;

Thank you for all your good work on your review of the Getting Started Guide

Is this Glossary intended to be included as part of the Back Matter of
the full book, or as Francis addressed below in his reply as a
stand-alone document that could be inclusive of the complete set of User
Guides.

How we proceed in the long run depends on a number of factors. For the
Glossary it depends on its ultimate use. If it is meant as a stand-alone
document for one guide or as an integrated part of the book it would be
handled one way, if as a stand-alone document for the entire set of
guides it would be another way entirely. I will start a [Discuss]
thread so that all the members can give their opinions on the best way
to do it.

For the consistency of Figure placement I agree with Francis that it
would be best addressed in the Calc Guide as the placement has to be
addressed in the chapter documents. The full book is simply the chapter
docs merged into one doc along with any Front Matter and/or Back Matter
if it is required.

For the more colloquial wording, that can start to be addressed as I
work through the Writer Guide, and followed up in the rest of the guides
as they are started.

If you could write up your suggestions and post them here all of the
team members can have access to them.

Hi Michele,
I think a standalone glossary could be very useful. There is a lot of
jargon and it would not be practical to give an adequate explanation of
terms within the flow of the text.I also suspect that there would be a lot
of overlap in the terms among the various guides, making a standalone
glossary more practical.

Although a stand-alone Glossary would be an excellent addition, remember
we also publish the individual chapters. It may be helpful to have a
glossary specific to each chapter. What do you think?

You make a good point about the location of figures. I'm inclined to make
those changes in the next guide to get a major revision, which would be the
Calc Guide. I think Keith is about ready to publish the Writer Guide.

Actually I am not ready to publish it, With all the time spent on
getting to Getting started book right, as well as things in my personal
life, I am behind on reviewing the chapters. Chapter one is ready, but
in Chpater 2 I found a number of corrections that need to be made. I
will be starting Chapter 3 today and spending most of my time the next
few weeks reviewing the rest of the chapters.

You are right about some passages being less friendly than they could be.
All of the guides suffer from uneven tone. There have been many authors and
I think some spoke English as a second language. It's probably not
practical, or even desirable, to completely even out the style, but
introducing a bias towards less formal writing is a good idea.

I wholeheartedly agree with the above. Some of it could also be from
repeated us of the same phrasing or word. This is more a style issue and
would need to be addressed on an individual basis. Some of these style
issues may be a result of my own bias, for which I apologize profusely.

What would you think of working with me to complete the revision of the
Calc guide? The version in the Git repository has been substantially
revised from the version on the web page but it could use improvements like
the ones you suggest. In relatively little time we could have something to
replace the very old version on the web page. I think that would bring the
biggest improvement to the published documentation for the least effort on
our part. We could then come back to implement your specific suggestions
for the Getting Started guide having acquired some experience on the Calc
guide.

I think this would a good idea as well. It would give Michele an
opportunity to get familiar with GitHub and be able to more
interactively rather than having to wait wait until a guide or it's
chapters are published to he mwiki.

Regards
Keith

Thanks for all your effort so far. If you would rather concentrate on the
glossary exclusively or work on any other aspect of the documentation, just
say so!

I look forward to seeing those suggestions, but understand that the

The priorities are:
1) Writer

3) Impress
4) Draw

6) Base

Because of this, some or all of the information may be entered into
Bugzilla, our issue tracking database, for future action. As far as a

Hi Keith

Keith,
I compiled all of the AOO41GS#.odt files into a file named AllChapters.odt.
I had to reinsert a figure or two in most of the chapters. After saving it
and taking a break, I scrolled through the whole document looking for
missing figures both among the numbered figures in frames and the in-line
images that show individual toolbar icons. That was very tedious, so I'm
not highly confident I didn't miss anything. However, I didn't see any
missing figures. There is a comment on page 251 that needs to be resolved.
I'm not sure what you would like for the next step. I could just push the
AllChapters file (with a different name?) to the top level folder of the
repository, or I can make it available separately.
Regards,
Francis

Francis;

For now, since there are questions to be resolved, push it to the Review
folder as AOO41GS.odt.

Again thank you for helping to get this straightened out.

Greetings Michele and welcome to Apache OpenOffice;

Your skills as a tech writer would definitely be appreciated on the
documentation team. Currently we are working on a massive upgrade to our
user documentation.

We broadly use the Chicago Manual of Style as our style guide. We also
use Apache OpenOffice®, especially Writer, for most of this work, and
use a GitHub repository for version control, as well as tracking who is
working on what.

Currently the Getting Started Guide is published and the Writer, and
Calc Guides still need to be reviewed.

This mailing list is the primary means of communication for the team so
feel free to ask questions. If you have not worked with an open source
project before, the Level 1 and level 2 links from our Orientation page
will prove helpful. https://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/index.html.

Again welcome to the project, and I look forward to working with you to

Problem with AOO crashing with multiple changes

2023-05-01 Thread Keith N. McKenna
We have had a recurring problem with AOO crashing on files with over 5
changes. What happens is that if you try to review the changes
individually AOO will sometimes crash.

I have added https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=128564 to
Bugzilla, but it cannot advance as no one has been able to confirm it
yet. Could one of you take the ODT file from the issue and see if it
crashes for you and report the results in the bug?

Dear team,

I am currently working as a teacher of English in one of the A-level
schools in Shanghai, China. After I obtained my master degree in
Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a top
50 university in the QS World University Rankings, I decided to become an
educator since I believe as one of the most noble occupations, it can
greatly contribute to human and social development as a whole. I’ve been
teaching ESL courses and Standardized Language Tests such as IELTS and
TOEFL for about ten years, during which I’ve marked tons of students’
writing pieces and helped them achieve a satisfactory score in the writing
part of their tests.

I heard about the role of technical writer for the first time from one of
my friends from graduate school. Her description of the job made it sound
really interesting. She also recommended the Apache OpenOffice Project to
me, saying it is a friendly community where anyone who is interested in
technical writing can get an easy start. As a technophile, I am
enthusiastic about knowing every new release and update on technology
products. So I think maybe I can combine my interest, expertise and
experiences together to seek more personal development.

When I found out about your volunteer project, I considered it might be a
good way for me to get started and be actively engaged. I am looking
forward to your further reply to see how I can contribute to the community.

Kind regards,

Keren

Francis;

The ForWiki folder is used to create the PDFs and ODT files that are
sent to the mwiki. The Chapter files all need the front matter applied
to them. That includes the Titlte Page, Copyright page and the TOC.

The process is to copy the published ODT files to the ForWiki folder and
edit them to add the Front matter, create the PDF files, and then add
the PDF and ODT files to the mwiki.

The Review folder is where all the editing and reviews get done before
publishing the document to the top level folder and then cherry-picked
to Main.

So please go ahead and comitt your changes to the Review folderand we
will go from there.

Francis;

I had a conversation with infra today as I was not able to assign you
either. What you have to do is go ti http://gitbox.apache.org/ and link
your ASF id there. Than you should be able to assign yourself, or I can
assign you. In issues only committers or those with the triage privilege
can be assigned to issues.

Please let me know how it works out.

The problem is that your FJCC id and your committer id are different. I
believe that you need to link your committer id to to GitHub. I will

Czeslaw;

Be assured that any remarks that you give us will be addressed as we go
forward. The difficulty arises is that Once we start publishing the
PDF's, to the mwiki, the source .odt files need to be changed, and the
full book and the full book .odt re-compiled. Also the PDF's for the
book as well as the individual chapter PDF's.

The above can take a while as the documentation team currently consists
of three members to do the updates and editing passes on the six user
guides. If you would be interested in joining the team, we would welcome
your keen eye as an editor. That way you could make the changes to the
.odt files directly, or as comments and commit them back to the
documentation repository.

Either way your comments are appreciated and will be acted upon.

Hi Keith,
I have reached chapter 9, Getting Started With Math, and found that all of
the Math objects are missing. They have been replaced with an icon of an
electrical plug and the text Object X, where X is a number. All of the
figures are there, only the Math objects are missing. Fortunately,
AOO41GS9.odt still has the Math objects.Did you make chapter 9 using copy
and paste from AOO41GS9.odt? I'd like to use the same process you used and
see if there is a reproducible problem. Do you remember anything unusual
happening with chapter 9?
Other than this problem, the review is going very smoothly. I made a few
corrections but I'm impressed with how few in such a long document.
Francis

Francis;

I do not see the problem that you are seeing. Yes I created AOO41GS.odt
by copying and pasting the chapter files. there was nothing that was
different about AOO41GS9.

No - go to the *Structure* line, click in the first white space, then
click Hyperlink. You should now see LS (link start) in that place.

Note: This LE is probably already there, from what you’ve done
previously,so you don’t need to repeat it.

4. Highlight level 10 and click hyperlink

No - stay on the *Structure* line.

New info: If you see a field LE just after the LS, click on it and press
the Delete key on your keyboard. That LE is left over from what you did
before, and it is interfering with adding an LE in the correct position, as
described next.

Go to the LAST white space (after the # field) and click Hyperlink. You

Keith,

you don't need to blame yourself. I've also given up on the ODM.

As Jean says: "a bug in AOO means that a book created using a master

incorrect internal cross-references to figure captions."

I've created Dutch odms in the past and never came across this. For now
I've tried several times and ultimately gave up on it.

Importing all chapters into one .odt works for me

Dick;

It is not so much that I have given up on ODM's, but that I am
frustrated that they are not working properly.

They should be the easiest way to compile multi-chapter books, yet with
bugs like this they are useless. I found an open bug that addresses the
problem and submitted a tripped down version of the Getting Started
guide and will also up the priority on it to hopefully get it fixed.

I am thinking that it might be a good idea to rename the OOo3 ODF files.
The are all in a format nnnAAvv-ChapterName, IE 0201WG33-IntroducingWriter.

As we started off with AOO41GSn for the chapters, I was thinking
following on with that naming sceme for the rest of the quides.

Please let me know if you agree with this or not.

Update on Getting Staeted Guide

2022-08-13 Thread Keith N. McKenna
I have verified that all the chapter files are correct, but many of the
xrefs are still wrong in the ODM file. The only thing that I can think of
is that somewhere in the process the ODM file got corrupted.

To test that theory, I am going to create a new ODM file from scratch
and see if it will solve the problems.

In parallel I will start publishing the chapter file PDF'S to the mwiki.

New AOOdoc.ott Template for User Guides

2022-07-19 Thread Keith N. McKenna
Greetings all. This should have happened a while back, but it obviously
didn't. I have updated AOOdoc.ott to include the color AOO Blue, which
is the branded color we use for our logo and other materials. It has
been added to the Template branch of the docs repository.

Please download it and replace what you have in your instance of AOO.

Just a question for you. Why individual mails to each of us rather than a

It seemed to me that one of the problem was lying in the pictures. So I
numbered them all, as well as the frames they were in ( if any).

I then noticed that some pictures were embedded as Shapes (no Pictures).
Found some shapes that were hidden behind the picture.

Changed the Shapes to pictures by Grouping them with the accompanying

That seemed to clear some things.

Of course it could be something else causing the problems. But it is

Jean;

Yes the PDF was created from the ODT, but one that deleted the Table of

page numbers definitely would be off.

I will recreate the PDF from the complete ODT and see what that yields,

Keith, I suggest asking legal about this (with approval of the PMC as well).
Get permission for the ASF logo as well.

Considering that *anyone* can publish those books, with appropriate

is unclear to me why such a thing, with proceeds to the ASF, would cross a line.

That's way better than what people have done with the AOO distros on eBay and
Amazon themselves.

Jean;

The problem I see with being able to do this is the owner of the account.
Because ASF is a US 501(C)(3)Tax Exempt charity, neither it nor AOO can be the
owner of the account as it would likely violate the terms of that status.

So, the first things to decide are:
1) Do you want to sell through Amazon and other online retailers? Or
would Lulu Bookstore be enough?
2) Who will be the account holder with whatever service is selected?

Once an account is set up, one can publish a book.
3) Who will prepare the files for uploading?
4) Who will create the cover art?
5) Who will do the various publishing steps? These involve uploading a
PDF for interior pages, creating and uploading a separate PDF for the
cover, inputting other information and making various selections about
paper type, black-and-white vs color interiors, pricing, etc.!

But first!
Do you want to print the book full-page-size (A4) or reduce the page
size to something like 6x9-inch, which is a common trade paperback
size. The cost of printing full size is much higher than printing
smaller pages, but involves an extra step and software that not
everyone has.

I'm sure there's more that escapes me at the moment.

Keith,
POD (print on demand) is perfect for a group publishing project,
because there is no inventory and no one has to take orders or fulfill
sales, mail out books, etc. Once the book is uploaded to the POD
service, that service takes orders, processes payments, prints and
mails out the book, and (at specified intervals) sends any profit to
the account holder. There is no upfront cost for using the service;
the service provider takes a cut of sales.

There are two common ways to publish POD books: 1) through Amazon
Kindle Direct (AKD - which now does paperback books as well as ebooks)
or 2) through Lulu. Some other services exist, but I'm unfamiliar with
them. When I started doing this about 15 years ago, the only practical
way to publish was through Lulu, and I've seen no reason to change.
Lulu has its own online bookstore, and one can optionally choose
"global distribution" to get a book into other online retailers such
as Amazon.

Some considerations regarding global distribution:
1) Global distribution from Lulu requires the book to have an ISBN,
which may cost money to obtain (the amount varies greatly depending on
several factors). If selling only through the Lulu bookstore, an ISBN
is optional. I am not sure if an ISBN is required by AKD.
2) The requirements for the quality of the content in submitted PDFs
are higher for global distribution. For example, the line weights in
some screenshots may be too light to be acceptable, and all
transparency needs to be removed. These requirements have become more
strict in recent years. I assume they are the same for AKD.
3) The price to buyers is higher for books in global distribution,
even for the copies sold through the Lulu bookstore.

For these reasons, I have not used global distribution for several
years although I did for awhile. I found that I got very few sales
through Amazon compared to the sales directly through Lulu. Most
people apparently weren't finding the books by searching; they were
following links from relevant websites (OOo, LO, or my own sites).

So, the first things to decide are:
1) Do you want to sell through Amazon and other online retailers? Or
would Lulu Bookstore be enough?
2) Who will be the account holder with whatever service is selected?

Maybe we could put that in a separate file ( cover page and frontmatter)
and add that file to the masterdocument.

I did it for the revised masterdocument of the Getting Started guide:
Cover and frontmatter --> then the TOC -->  then the fil;es for the
contents of the guide

As I have seen no other replies except the 2 from Digro and Jean, I am

Here is how I do it.
1. Compile the book using the .odm

4. Go into Format > Sections and remove all the sections. This embeds all
the sub-documents into the one .odt

The "Overview" section, 5th paragraph reads:

"The width of the sidebar is variable. The controls in its panels are

collapses to the tab bar. This transitional state is indicated by an
arrow that is displayed in place of the deck. A click on of the buttons in
the tab bar restores the deck to its former width".

The arrow is easier to spot when the Sidebar is undocked.

Now my question: would it be possible to include information about the
arrow in the new AOO guide?

Here is a sample of some things I found. There are many, many more.
PLEASE NOTE that most of these problems are in the full book, but
NOT
in the chapter files.

There are many inconsistent uses of numbered and/or bulletted lists
throughout the book, probably due to incorrect/inconsistent style
use.
I am not going to itemize all of them, but here are some examples
from
Chapter 1.
Page 19, at the top is a paragraph numbered 1), but the paragraph
just
before Figure 15 on page 18 should be 1) and this paragraph 2).
Further down, there is another paragraph numbered 1), as it
should be,
but the next paragraph does not have a number, even though it is
part
of the same procedure; it should be 2).
Further down, under Saving a Document Automatically, the two final
paragraphs are a procedure and should be numbered 1) and 2).
Page 20, the use (or not) of bullet points is inconsistent, and the
final paragraph is centered but should not be.

A few random examples from other chapters, after which I gave up
looking.
Page 72 (in Chapter 3), under Adding a Movie or Sound, there is an
un-numbered procedure. Further down is an item in a different
procedure numbered 3), but the other items in that procedure have no
numbers.
Under Using Mail Merge, several items should have bullet points.
Page 81 (in Chapter 4), there is an item numbered 4), but the other
items in the procedure have no numbers.
Page 115, list begins with 4) but the actual first list item is not

numbered.

Some lists use numbers followed by a closing parenthesis; some use
numbers followed by a period (full stop). Again, inconsistent style
use, though trivial compared to the random use of numbering at all.

Other formatting errors are in the chapter files as well as the full
book. Examples (there are many others):
Page 8, the Note is formatted differently from Notes, Tips, Cautions
in other chapters.
Page 20, the final paragraph is incorrectly tagged as OOFigure,
so it
is centered but should not be.

I looked briefly at the text near Fig. 15 where Jean noted an error. It
seems the paragraph styles are used correctly in that list but the
previous

list slightly earlier in the document ends with the style OOo List 1 Cont
instead of  OOo List 1 End. Maybe that is enough to cause the problem?

Meanwhile I would suggest to withdraw the published PDF from the mwiki

Jean;

[...] What sort of formatting errors are you seeing?

Here is a sample of some things I found. There are many, many more.
PLEASE NOTE that most of these problems are in the full book, but NOT
in the chapter files.

There are many inconsistent uses of numbered and/or bulletted lists
throughout the book, probably due to incorrect/inconsistent style use.
I am not going to itemize all of them, but here are some examples from
Chapter 1.
Page 19, at the top is a paragraph numbered 1), but the paragraph just
before Figure 15 on page 18 should be 1) and this paragraph 2).
Further down, there is another paragraph numbered 1), as it should be,
but the next paragraph does not have a number, even though it is part
of the same procedure; it should be 2).

Page 20, the final paragraph is incorrectly tagged as OOFigure, so it
is centered but should not be.

Found and fixed the error near Figure 15.

Have to wait how it tunrs out though :-)

In parallel I tried a new tack. I created the pdf direct from the odm

How to handle design of Guides Updated from version 3.3

2022-06-11 Thread Keith N. McKenna
The first thing I saw as I started reviewing the chapters of the writer
guide was Francis' not around the handling of the Title page and other
front matter.

My first inclination is to remove most of it and treat it as we did the
Getting Started Guide and put all that information in the ODM file. What
do others think?

I will start reviewing the content changes only as we continue this

Thanks everybody for your input.I agree that that the 4.2.0 schedule is
so nebulous that it makes sense to forge ahead with the 4.1.x
documentation.I will start splitting my time with getting the Getting
Started one files published to the wiki and starting the review of the
Writer and Calk guides.

If we can all start Doing issues and assigning ourselves to them in the
project so that we know who is doing what and then closing the issue
when the work is completed it will go a long way towards knowing where
we are at any point in time. Francis for know just post on the list what
you are working on and either Digro or I will assign you to the issue.

Again, thank you all for ypur ideas and the hard work that you have
doneto move us closer to having Sold documentation for the users.

I agree with Dennis that we should not wait for 4.2. I doubt that the
changes between 4.1.x and 4.2 will cause anything like the number of
revisions needed to update the existing guides

Fortunately that's not fact...

  to match the current release

But that's true. Don't wait for 4.2.0. ;-)
