[libreoffice-documentation] Base Documentation

2020-03-27 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hell Everybody,
Chapter 10 has been placed in the published folder.

Jean:
I have deleted the note as commented by you but the last paragraph about
incompatibility between HSQLDB and java is necessary because of two
reasons:-

1) We need to inform the users that the problem is no more.
2) It is still true that external connections are faster than internal
HSQLDB. Even external HSQLDB is faster than its internal counterpart.

Jean and Oliver: I think we should use the stacking method for preparing
the full book of base guide 6.2 as there would be need for much work to be
done on each chapter like:-
1) Putting the contents and copyright in sections.
2) Anchoring all the images to paragraph instead of as character.
3) Making sure that all the chapter have the copyright and contents section
set to become invisible in full book by using a condition and declaring a
variable in the master document.

So I think we should use the stacking method for version 6.2. in version
6.4 we will take care of these things from begining and use the master
document.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base documentation?

2015-03-22 Thread Jean Weber
Work on documentation (in English) for Base seems to have stopped,
unless I've missed it. I see a lot of v4.2 drafts of Base Handbook
chapters on ODFAuthors, and a few reviews, mostly from October 2014,
and the tasks list on the wiki shows several chapters checked out for
work (which may or may not have been completed).

Can the Base enthusiasts bring me up to date? (I know there is a more
recent version of the Handbook in German.) Is it worth my time to go
through the existing English drafts and see if they are publishable? I
know there was talk about combining the existing "Base Guide" chapters
with the translated "Base Handbook" into a document to be renamed
"Base Guide", but I haven't seen any evidence of this occurring.

Thanks! --Jean

Hi *,

the new German Base-Handbuch Version 4.4 is available now:
http://de.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/

There are also more example-databases for special problems with a
description available.

I have created also a Calc-document, which shows the different
chapters, beginning with the first Handbuch V36 for all 6 versions of
the Handbuch. If you are interested in this:

There is a comparison of HSQLDB and Firebird available. You could find
it here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/de#Handbuch_f.C3.BCr_Base
But remember: The internal Firebird isn't ready for use. Functions,
which were needed so much for users of HSQLDB, like DATEADD or LIST
doesn't work in the internal Firebird database at this time. I will
write a chapter about the difference between both databases if the
internal Firebird will work with this two functions ...

There is no difference in using LO-Base since a long time. A little
bit has been added or changed (for example a using macros with
date-fields since LO 4.1, using the query-editor with limited queries
since LO 4.1). The internal Firebird-database is only experimental so
it isn't documented yet.

The new version of Base-Handbook (V 4.4) will be available in a few
days. I have just created the *.pdf-files for the whole document: Now
I'm looking for references from one chapter to another, which wouldn't
work outside the global-document.

The German Base-Handbook will show a little bit more examples than the
older versions.

There will be also a package of example-databases for special
solutions with an own description.

I think it's correct? Peter, is that correct now?

Hi Peter,

can you post the link to the page you are trying to edit? Then maybe Jean
or I can have a look at your rights.
But as Jean already pointed out, you have the same rights as any other user
that can check in documents...
However, it could be a bug, that's why I'm aksing.

Which precise page are you attempting to access without success? You
uploaded a file to ODFAuthors so you definitely have a working login there.

If you mean the LibreOffice wiki page, that is a different website which
uses its own login, separate from ODFAuthors. You should be able to create
your own login on the wiki: look for the link in the upper right hand

I am sorry but I do not seem to be able to make any changes to this
page, despite logging on etc. I need to remove the reference to me in
the last column for Ch 4 Forms and put an entry indicating I am working
on Ch 5 Queries.

I am probably missing something blindinglynobvious.

Peter,
You were able to log in to ODFAuthors and upload the file, so your
user name is clearly valid. I just checked and you appear to have the
necessary permissions to change a file's status, so I don't know why
you can't. Don't worry about it; it's not stopping you from doing
anything else. Anyway, there is no "reviewed" status for files on the
ODFAuthors website; we keep track of that on the wiki:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development/UserGuideTasks#Status_of_tasks_BH_v4.2

As for checking out another chapter, just download it from ODFAuthors.
Then put your initials in the "Checked out" column on the wiki page I
linked above.

Yes, I know it's a slightly clunky system. We tried to do a more
automated one several years ago, using a different platform, but it
didn't work out. (Long, boring explanation omitted here.) The people
actually doing the work at the time appeared to be happy with the
system we're using. Of course, it may be time to change the system, if
enough people find it's a problem and want to do something different.

Lastly, I see there was no folder for Reviewed 4.2, so I have created
one and moved your reviewed file from Drafts 4.2 to the new folder.
Using different folders seems to help people keep track of what stage
a file has reached.

Anyone who is prepared to "step up to the plate" and help with the
documentation is _NOT_ a pain. Don't concern yourself too much about
"screwing anything up", because everything is fixable and nobody will
get upset about a genuine mistake. Probably the only semi-important
thing to remember is renaming any edited files you check back in. (See
point 1 below.)

You should find answers to most of your questions at:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development
If you need any further clarification please write back to this list.

In answer to your specific questions:

1. See:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development#Uploading_a_file_after_a_review
Change the name of the file you are checking back in to include your
initials and editing date. Something like:
BH4204-Forms_AC_PG_01Oct2014.odt
(The AC indicates that you reviewed Alan Cook's revision.)
Then change the status here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development/UserGuideTasks#Base_Handbook

2. The choice is yours. If you are interested in working on the Base
Handbook there appears to be plenty to choose from at:
http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/base-handbook/drafts_4.2

3. See:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development#Downloading_a_file_for_review
Then change the status here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development/UserGuideTasks

4. For chapters you want to work on I would recommend the ODF Authors
website:http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english
It appears that Jean has made the Base Handbook chapters "Externally
Visible" (ie. no log-in required), but if you want to retract (ie. work
on) them you will need to log-in first.

I believe the above information to be accurate, but others will
undoubtedly correct any errors I may have made.

I hope this helps.

Regards
Dave

I have uploaded my version of the the Forms chapter. I looked at the
link for changing the status of the file. I do not have access to change
the status. Do I need an account for this, other than the ODF authors
login. (This does not work on the sign in.) It says my user name is
invalid, yet when I try to create a user it says I already exist.

I need to be able to set the status to reviewed and then be able to
check out another chapter.

Regards

Peter Goggin

For title, put the number and name of the chapter, for example BH42 Ch4 Forms.

You can leave the description blank; it's not needed. Or you can put a
note about what you've done. For example, "Reviewed and some changes
and questions are in the file."

Thanks for the instructions. When I try to upload my file it asks for a
title and then another field for description used in searches etc.

What do I put in these field?

Is the title the file name?

Again sorry for the trouble, but as I get older I have some difficulty
in grsping new concepts, until I have used them one or two times.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base documentation - Forms

2014-10-01 Thread Jean Weber
Only as a last resort, if you are unable to access the ODFAuthors website,
should you send a file directly to me. Otherwise, it might sit around for
awhile if I am away from my computer; I can't deal with it from a mobile
device.

In addition to the info in Dave Barton's note in reply: the preferred place
to upload a reviewed file is the Feedback or Reviewed folder for the book
you're working on.

Also, it's a good idea to tell the list where you've put it; otherwise, it
might be awhile before someone notices.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base documentation - Forms

2014-10-01 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
You can attach the chapter to a private email to someone such as Jean, who
has access to ODFAuthors and knows what she is doing with it.

If you really want to learn how to do it yourself then this suggested
work-flow might help;
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development#Using_ODFAuthors_website
or / and this guide;
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development#Contributors_Guide

You can choose which chapter of which guide/handbook you would like to work
on next. This wiki might help you avoid things that other people are
working on;
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development/UserGuideTasks

If you'd like a recommendation then any of chapters 5, 6 and 7 makes sense
- to follow on from what you have already done.
Chapter 5, about Queries, feels like a bit of a step backwards because
it's usually better practice to base Forms&Reports on Queries rather than
directly on Tables. However i think the aim was to quickly get something
working for the User and then help them find better and better ways of
doing things, and to help them discover why those ways are better.
Chapter 6, about Reports, is more of a natural follow-on but is (VERY!)
roughly the same sort of thing. This might be something you could race
through quite quickly now and maybe use to improve your own database (i
doubt it because you know enough about databases already to know the
advantages and disadvantages of Forms over Reports, but it's still
possible).
Chapter 7, about Linking to Databases, is probably the most hugely
useful one for you right now. It's the biggest advantage and main reason
why Base is sooo far in advance of Access that it makes Access look like a
child's toy.

The "Forms" chapter in Writer might have been fairly useful but we've
missed the chance for this release of the Writers Guide. No matter!!
Onwards and upwards! There will be another chance to work on it in a few
months time, or a years time or whenever the next version is being done.
There is plenty else to do here that would also be useful!

Btw i had a hard-drive failure yday but luckily turned out to be an
intermittent fault and it's working again today. I still need to back-up
my data! A colleague had the same problem but since he was on Windows it
was a more serious problem and he's doing a full reinstall to a new drive
and is restricted to just using his tablet until it gets done! It's good
to hear you were able to breeze through it more easily!
Many thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Would it be possible for someone to advise me on
1. How to check the chapter back in
2. What chapter should I work on next?
3. How do I check out any new chapters I work on?
4. What are the links for downloading chapters?

Sorry to be a pain but it has been many years since I have been involve
in a large team and I do not want to screw anything up.

I have written most of the content of the Base-Handbuch. So let me say:
We haven't translated anything from the Base-Guide (or the
draft-chapters of it ...) for the Base-Handbuch. I have written it,
because there wasn't much information available for Base and it seems to
be needed in mailinglists and forums.

Because the Base Guide had several chapters in draft form before we decided
that translating the German Handbuch would be a faster way to get a book on
Base done in English, we used a different name, Handbook, to avoid
confusion with the draft guide. I note that all the German translations
of the English User Guides are Handbooks; I assume that's the German
equivalent term.

And yes, the translated Base Handbook is written in a somewhat different
style, though not greatly different.

Those are the reasons for preferring to take screenshots using Linux. It
has nothing to do with "don't always work correctly when done using
Windows". I note that those in the Writer Guide are taken from Windows, and
the Getting Started Guide has a mixture of Windows, Mac, and Linux pix. In
both cases it's either be inconsistent or not get the book done. IMO having
some Windows pix in the Base Handbook is not a problem, though others
disagree.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base documentation volunteers

2014-09-09 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Wow, that was all very interesting.

To me the word "handbook" suggests a reasonably comprehensive book that
covers most simple cases and/or maybe look-up tables or "cheat sheets" to
nudge me in the right direction without going into anything in tooo much
depth. For the greater depth i'd expect something heftier, a manual or
something like that.

I hadn't thought about how translation to and from German might change
nuances and implications such as that. That changes quite a lot of things
imo.

Taking screen-shots is more like part of a final review process. I don't
think it's something a new proof-reader is likely to be able to do. I
suspect it's better to do them after a proper review so that the person
taking the screen-shots isn't distracted by other issues and can
batch-process them to make sure they are all consistent.

As far as taking screen-shots goes, it is a little more painful and less
obvious in Windows but that is not really the issue. The main problem is
that MS sometimes choose to clobber people who disregard their Eula and
stuff but most of the time they seem to let it slide. However it might be
worth bearing in mind that MS Office is a significant part of their profits
and anything that helps anyone reduce their profits could easily be seen as
a threat by them. It's not even as though LO helps MS gain greater market
share (an alleged reason why so many pirated versions of their stuff is up
for grabs in so many countries).

Apple might also choose to clobber us for screen-shots and allegedly they
have a reputation for being quite heavy handed - however LO does not
threaten a core income stream of their's. It may even be helping them look
more viable in the markets they seem to be aiming for at the moment. So i
can't really imagine them doing it unless we make their icons look bad or
some other bit of bad design.

To take a screen-shot in Gnu&Linux;
1. press the PrintScreen button on your keyboard
2. click on save or press enter.

To take a screen-shot in Windows
1. press the PrintScreen button on your keyboard (that copies the image
into the clipboard)
2. open some program such as Word or an image editing program or something
3. do Ctrl V or Edit - Paste
4. go to File - Save
5. create a name for the file
6. choose where to save it
7. click on save or press enter.

Regards from
Tom :)

name/content harmonization would help avoid confusion. (Apologies if
there's already been a conversation on this matter; please feel free
to point me at it)

IIRC, most projects take screenshots in GNU/Linux for
1) Consistency
2) Avoiding any question about including screenshots of a proprietary WM

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base documentation volunteers

2014-09-09 Thread Alan Cook

Hello Tom T.,

Welcome to the team! I'm a volunteer (at the moment, the only one, it
seems) working on updating the Base Handbook. I'd like to supplement the
information that Tom D. has provided you with and let you know how you
might start out getting involved with the project.

As Tom indicated, the Base Guide and the Base Handbook are two different
documents, which is confusing. Base is the only LO product for which
this is the case; for all the other products, the user manual is just
called the Guide. However, there is not now, nor has there ever been, a
complete Base Guide; all there is is the drafts of three chapters.

The reason that there's both a Guide and a Handbook is that the German
documentation team got tired of waiting around for the English team to
finish the Base Guide, so they took the draft chapters, translated them,
finished the book, and published it as the Base-Handbuch. That document
was then translated back into English as the Base Handbook.

Contrary to what Tom D. indicated, the Handbook is /not/ shorter or less
thorough than the Guide. Each is intended to be a complete and
comprehensive user manual; the difference is that the Handbook is
finished (although not up-to-date in English.) The current German
version of the Handbook has 448 pages in 11 chapters; the plan for the
Guide includes 10 chapters, of which only 3 are complete.

The current English Handbook is for version 3.5 of the product. The most
recent German Handbuch is for version 4.2. What I'm doing right now is
updating the English Handbook from the more up-to-date German version.
Someone else has done the translating; I'm basically just
cutting-and-pasting (although I am finding that I have to do a fair
amount of translating and editing work as I run across things that don't
make sense.)

Here's one task we need done right away. The screen captures in the
German manual are, as one would respect, from the German version of the
app, and are in German. We need someone to work through the procedures
described in the Handbook using the English version of the product and
capture the needed screenshots in English. Moreover, this needs to be
done by someone who's running Base on Linux. For reasons I don't
understand, screen captures don't always work correctly when done using
Windows, and Windows is what I'm running.

If this is something you'd be willing to do, respond to this e-mail and
I'll send you more details on how to get started.

The first book there has a chapter to introduce each of the

The Base Handbook is much shorter than the full guide so it might not go
into as much depth as you'd like but it is good to get a broad overview
before getting tooo bogged down in too many of the intricacies. Also it is
currently being updated quite significantly so it'd be great to do
proof-reading for the chapters as they get completed. It is the Handbook
that is in most need of proof-reading at the moment.

If you manage to catch up with the translation-update then going on to the
full guide would help gain a much deeper understanding. The full guide is
more of a longer-term project and is being written from scratch by Dan
Lewis.

Hopefully someone might register you at ODFAuthors while you are reading
through that.
Many thanks and regards from

Welcome to the document group! My first suggestion is to use the
following link to download the Introducing Base chapter. In the Contents
section, click on 1.8 LibreOffice Base Guide. Then you will find this
chapter listed. (Download the 4.2 version.
Proofread the chapter. Two things you need to do: Edit > Changes
> Record; and Edit > Changes > Show. The one records the changes, and
the second one shows what you have changed. These place a line through
what you want to change and also adds what you want to change it to.
This is a good beginning point, and there will be more directions
given when you have completed this.

Thanks to Robert for posting the links to info about the Base
Handbook. In this note I will talk about the Base Guide, which Dan
Lewis has been working on.

Dan's latest outline is here:
http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/base-guide/draft-v3.6/dan_base-guide-outline/view

AFAIK, the latest drafts are here:
http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/base-guide/draft-lo3.4

(Although there is a folder named draft-lo3.5, it contains files which
AFAIK have been superseded by those in the folder for v3.4. And the
"last modified" dates given on the website are often wrong, because
they were reset to the date when the website's software was updated:
Feb 26, 2013. A file with a later date is probably correct, but many
of those with Feb 26 dates are in fact much older.)

to chose anything except which printed book I want to buy.

I guess my question is, just how do I choose the project? I already
know that I want to work on Base documentation.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base documentation

2013-08-14 Thread Jean Weber
I'm travelling and will be offline for about 24 hours, nor can I check right
now to see if you have an ODFAuthors account. When I get home I should stay
there for a few months (unusual for me), so I may be have time for some
hand-holding.

Let's start by finding out what you might like to do, and what if any
experience you have with producing user docs, whether book length or shorter
(how-tos, tutorials, examples, FAQs, tips & hints). Do you prefer to work in
ODT format or wiki format or what? So far most of our user docs are in ODT/PDF
but there is no reason why everything needs to be in that form.

Give me some feedback on those topics and we'll take it from there.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Documentation

2011-05-23 Thread Alexander Thurgood
Hi all,

Just a heads up to those working on Base Documentation that there are a
number of known bugs related to database usage and LibreOffice :

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=libreoffice+database

For many of these, little, or no, work is being done to correct them. If
fixes continue to be made by the OOo Base team (which remains in doubt
given the lack of any visible activity since mid-April), then they will
probably make it at some stage into the LibO code source repository.

I find this to be a *very* good tutorial. A little too deep for a
general intro but could be an excellent start to make one (by pruning
and grafting... well, more pruning than grafting).

As of a Base tutorial for beginners, here's the outline I'm thinking of:

Part 1
-- What a RDBMS is (principles, tables, relations, queries)
-- How to devise a database
-- Introduction to Base
-- Creating a DB with Base
-- Importing data from Calc and delimited text files
-- Querying a DB in interactive mode (not so sure about the English
wording here as I've got the French version installed)

-- Using a DB for mailmerge

Part 2
-- Introduction to SQL
-- Querying a DB using SQL
-- Useful tools (Sun/Oracle Report Builder, MySQLworkbench)
-- Reporting with S/ORB
-- Using Base as a front-end for MySQL (MySQLconnector extension) and
PostgreSQL (SDBC)

This contents is what I currently intend to stuff into a series of
in-house training I'm planning. I reckon this outline to be quite
progressive and, from my experience, seems to be what newcomers want.

I second the BASE - TUTORIAL

If the existing documentation is THAT scarse (bad?) the Tutorial is
something a experienced Base user could cover quickly and would be the
starting point of the future GUIDE.

But alas, count me out of this enterprise, I don't even know how to start
the Base program, so ... my opinion should be taken from this rather
(ignorant) perspective.

Of course I could step in if someone needs a a proof reader or/and a mouse

My opinion FWIW is that Base related stuff is desperately needed, including
a full Base Guide. We've been rebranding the OOo user guides as an initial
set for LibreOffice, but the Base Guide has never been written. Three draft
chapters (badly in need of editing) exist, but that's all. One could build
on that, and the Base Gyude outline, or start from scratch. Of course, other
Base-related materials would be useful, too. IMO the "Getting Started with
Base" chapter is quite good, so we wouldn't want to duplicate that.

I personally don't have much database experience beyond the trivial, but I'm
good at testing, critiquing, and editing, revising... if only we can find
some database people to write an initial draft!

I appreciate that developing the Base portion of the website should probably
take priority over the much longer, more ambitious work needed on a Base
Guide.

I haven't looked for any Base tutorials, but if any exist that would be useful info. And there are
certainly lots of other tutorials, it would be good to start some exploration about rebranding
those, too.

For me personally, the best Base introduction was a little tutorial
called base_entwurf_einer_datenbank.odt[1] (translated back to English
it might read "Base - creating a sample database"). It claims to be a
German "polished" translation of issue 28136 [2].

As my impression of the doc team here around is rather good ;) I just
want to suggest you to think also of a tutorial-like Guide. Lerning by
doing is Not Bad(TM).

Of course, the tutorial only covers a very little section of the Base
functionality but it enables the reader to work with Base better than
any other doc I found.

So the first idea could be to extend this tutorial (e.g. how n:m
relations are handled in queries, forms and reports).

Another idea might be to add some background chapters about database
theory, but there are plenty of them around so this does not really
seem necessary.

Of course, only if you want to take this little tutorial as starting
point - it's just a suggestion.
