That, of course, is subjective.

Owned the KX2 and KX3, great rigs but sold them. No interest in the KH1.
Re-acquired a K1 a few days ago.

Re: [Elecraft] Brand New KX2 Issues

2023-08-30 Thread Andrew Moore
Sorry to hear about the issues. When you sent the radio back, did you sent
back the mic as well? I'm wondering if they tried to replicate it with the
same mike you're using. My best guess is it's a problem with the microphone
connector - either the plug or the socket - maybe the two aren't meshing
properly. From what you describe, it sounds like the KX2 itself functions
without issue, when not using the mike - confirm?

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a K4 in UK

2023-08-02 Thread Andrew Hebden
I have bought a few things direct from Elecraft, including my K4D, albeit
that I had to wait a couple of years for delivery as I was one of the early
birds. The only problem, as such, was the customs administration when the
parcels arrived in the UK. My K4D took 10 days to get it sorted as I needed
to pay the VAT and local admin charges before it was actually shipped to my
home.
W lost interest in selling Elecraft equipment some time ago. A few years
ago I ordered various addons for my K3S and it took them nearly 4 months to
deliver despite phone calls and them confirming they were in stock at the
time of order.

What is the best way to buy a K4 from the UK ? W still listed as the UK

Re: [Elecraft] K4D order/delivery/price

2023-04-11 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi Pete - apparently (my guess) demand is high enough that they don't need
to capture funds right away.

When your radio is nearing the top of the queue (but not necessarily ready
to ship), they'll send you an invoice for payment in full, and your radio
will ship shortly thereafter.

I don't speak for Elecraft. This is just my own recent experience.

In short, they won't bill you until your radio is "just about ready."

Hang on, that's not what happened. The inexperienced op who answered the
call of a high speed contest op didn't call anyone elitist. Those were two
different people.

In the interest of protecting and preserving the valuable spectrum we've
been allocated, it might be good for infighting to take a back seat, or at
least a less visible one (ie let's get along with each other in public
despite differences). There are plenty non-ham entities eager to profit
from our currently non profit bandwidth (ex: see 1988 FCC reallocation
order for 220-222 MHz), Cascading effects might include the snuffing out of
radio related, innovative small businesses, which ultimately isn't good for
our hobby, sport, interest, learning, advancement and service.

Re: [Elecraft] QRP and Contesting

2022-11-08 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi Jim -

Among the best ways to get better at something is to practice, and often a
better way is to practice while jumping into a live scenario (as opposed to
simulated or offline) before you're reasonably proficient. I wouldn't
recommend that approach for learning how to fly an airplane or drive a car,
but for learning a spoken language or improving CW sending, sure.
Non-contesting operation doesn't cease when big contests are running.

> Both of these problems are easily solved by using a contest logging
program, both to log and to send CW

There's not a lot you can do to change their behavior, so why not focus on
what you can control: Both could easily be solved by, when hearing a faint,
sloppy QRP station answering your call, simply ignoring them. A bad fist
should be easy to identify in a few seconds. Answer someone else, or call
CQ again. Their feelings might be hurt briefly, but they'll understand and
you won't waste time.

For many of us, maybe not the hard core contesters, the joy of contesting
is keying by hand and taking notes on paper, and don't have a lot of
interest in tying a computer to the radio and sending by keyboard
(excepting QRQ operation where using a keyboard is the only choice).

All that said, I understand your frustration.

Re: [Elecraft] Selling K2?

2022-08-02 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi Bernie & all -

Last week I removed some options that I no longer need from my K2. I'm
keeping the K2/10 with the audio CW filter, but have the following
available, if anyone is interested in them separately. Please note that
some options might require a couple components that I am leaving in place
on my K2 as they would be hard to unsolder - you would need to procure
those items on your own.

Available, assembled:

- K160RX 160 meter board, Rev D
- K60XV 60 meter & transverter board, Rev B
- KSB2 SSB board, Rev D, IC firmware 1.07
- KDSP2 DSP board and real time clock, Rev (?)

Prices TBD, haven't researched it yet.

Thanks & 73,
-Andrew NV1B

Re: [Elecraft] How do I know if my K2 has BFOMDKT installed?

2022-07-22 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi Dave -

My s/n 892 currently has RP2 = 10k, not 100k. Does the 2.7k still need to
be added across pins 7 and 8?

From the PLL Ref Upgrade kit docs (E850138), it sounds like it might need
to be added regardless of 10k/100k, as the first step below doesn't
differentiate, while the next step does:

[_] If your K2 serial number is lower than 3000, make sure you have
installed the BFO modification (BFOMDKT). One of the items supplied in this
kit is a 2.7-k resistor. This resistor, designated R19, must be soldered
across pins 7 and 8 of resistor network WP2 (in the PLL area).

[_] If you have an older K2 (early revision A for Field Test), you may have
a 100k resistor network installed at RP2, which is in the VCO area. If so,
you'll need to solder two 10k to 12k resistors across RP2, which can be
difficult...

Thanks,
-Andrew NV1B

[Elecraft] WTB: QRP cover for K2

2022-07-22 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi all -

I'm converting my K2/100 back to a K2/10 and need the original cover. I've
got one coming but it might be a long wait. If anyone has one available let
me know.

Thanks & 73,

[Elecraft] How do I know if my K2 has BFOMDKT installed?

2022-07-21 Thread Andrew Moore
I just installed the temperature compensated PLL reference upgrade kit on
my K2 #892.

>From everything I can see, this rig (which I bought used) has been brought
up to date in almost every way.

One step in the assembly instructions says that for S/N < 3000, make sure
I've installed the BFOMDKT upgrade, and that the kit includes a 2.7k
resistor R19 that's soldered across pins 7 and 8 of RP2 (according to
document "Upgrading the Elecraft K2 to Revision B").

My RP2 (10K) has no resistor across any pins. However, I do have L33
upgraded to the prewound 41 uH inductor, which I think was part of the
BFOMDKT.

Should I be adding 2.7k across pins 7 and 8? Is there any reason this would
not have been done as part of the BFOMDKIT upgrade?

Thanks,
-Andrew NV1B

Brian - if you had nickel for every time someone declared one rig is better
than another without knowing your needs or offering reasons to back it up,
you could buy both ;)

As many will say, don't over think sensitivity. You'll probably find many
other features that greatly differentiate the K2 vs K3. I've owned both
(currently just the K2) so if you have questions feel free to email me.

Re: [Elecraft] Wanted: KPA100 Amplifier for K2

2022-07-09 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi Bill & list -

I bought a K2 from someone on the list and it came with the KPA100, which I
tried out (works fine) but am not likely to use. If I can figure out how to
uninstall it, it will be available. I'll just need to go through the manual
and make sure I can reinstall components (if any) that might have been
removed during the install.

Has anyone on the list gone through this exercise and can tell me what's
involved?

Most of her station is homebrew, built on designs by amateur ancestors but

His station accessories are built from components salvaged from the yard

As soon as they split from PayPal ebay now holds onto your funds for a

Re: [Elecraft] IndeIdefinate support for K3s?

2022-05-01 Thread Andrew Moore
I can't speak for Elecraft but given the present disruptions in parts,
supply chains and labor, coupled with inflation, I have to wonder how they
could possibly give an answer other than "as long as possible."

Something you might consider (maybe you already have) is buy a backup K3S
to serve as a donor if something goes south with your main one. There are
loads of them coming on the market now, and if you already have a working
one, you have more time to hold out for a good price on a second one. This
is exactly what I did for an Omni D recently. It's great peace of mind for
when something goes wrong (when, not if :)

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 WTB(uild) external amplified speaker

2022-04-15 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi all - thanks for the replies regarding speakers.

I do occasionally check the local thrift shop to see if there are any
electronics on the shelf to take apart for components, and they do
currently have a set of amplified PC speakers for short money. But I got
bit by the homebrewing bug recently so I want to build something from
salvaged components. I think I have everything on hand now to do that.

I mentioned this project to my son a few weeks ago - told him I bought some
cheap amplified speakers at Best Buy then returned them, unopened, because
it occurred to me I'm a ham so I should be able to build my own instead. He
says good idea, that way you'll appreciate them more every time you use
them.

How it took him 5 seconds to realize that, and 30+ years (as a ham) for me,
is beyond me ;)

[Elecraft] KX2 WTB(uild) external amplified speaker

2022-04-14 Thread Andrew Moore
KX2 arrived yesterday after a ~15 week wait, which was pretty much spot on
with Elecraft's original estimate.

One of the best features is, especially for a compact rig with limited
dedicated controls, the ability to assign a programmable function button to
an otherwise buried menu feature. For menu features that are binary choices
(such as enable/disable CW transmit), not only does the PFn button activate
the menu item, but it also toggles the parameter and dumps you right back
into operating mode. For example, you can toggle between "CW transmit" and
"CW practice (no transmit)" by pressing only two buttons. No need to go
through deep menus. Kudos to KX2 designers for thinking ahead.

One of the not so great features is the internal speaker. It's even raspier
and more distorted than the forward-facing one supplied with the KX3. This
is to be expected; there are design trade-offs and this rig wasn't designed
to be a desktop model with high wattage audio output.

My typical use case for the KX2 is to listen to it in the background on the
desktop with good quality speaker audio, and then to switch to
headphones/earphones when in QSO.

So I'd like to build an audio amplifier to convert the KX2 headphone output
levels to say 5 watt speaker output (one of the two channels will suffice)
for listening to relatively undistorted audio in the shack. A good starting
point is knowing what the output level and impedance is for the headphones
jack. I measured approx 20 mV P-P (impedance unknown) at an audio output
level around "AF 10" according to the KX2 display. Does this sound about
right?

Bonus points: First QSO with the KX2 was from Maine to Bermuda at 1 watt.

Thanks,
-Andrew NV1B

Plain Utz is my favorite! But with ruffles. For Cape Cod it's the dark

Salt and vinegar: Just say no. If vinegar and chips don't belong in the
same room together, how can they possibly be allowed in the same bag? Makes
no sense.

Your preemptive strike on the "easily ruffled" joke is appreciated.

> Elecraft products are relatively small however they are expensive and
many of us have shipped them so I think this is a good subject for the list.

Kudos to John for bringing some humor into an otherwise monotonous thread
(I'm not being sarcastic here).

I eat snacks in front of my Elecraft so a discussion of potato chips is
warranted too, LOL.

The irony is that despite my initial ask (which I think only three people
actually understood and addressed; the rest responded with irrelevant
opinion), I find myself reading most of the thread.

To the original poster (Ted I think? I was a while back):

In the interest of staying on topic: despite your frustration with the cost
of the UPS Store service, the explanation is also revealed what you wrote:
the alternative - nearest UPS depot - was a 90 mile round trip. You pay for
the convenience of having a drop-off location close by, not having to pay
high fuel costs for a 90 mile drive, not having to spend a minimum of 3
hours for that effort, etc.

In the interest of getting off topic: I've had loads of success with USPS
Priority, and there's probably a real USPS office near your location.

I do understand your frustration with the price. I grumble every time the
cost of potato chips goes up. A family size bag cost $2.45 just a few years
ago. Now it's just under $5.00, and I swear the bag is smaller and it's
filled with more air, fewer chips.

Oh jeez, here we go with the potato chips. My KX2 is out for delivery
today! I'm going to celebrate by having a snack in front of it.

Speaking of USPS, many thanks to Madelyn & Elecraft for such a prompt
delivery. The KX2 left Elecraft in California at 3 pm Monday and will be
delivered in Maine less than 48 hour later. That's 2,700 miles in less than
2 days and cost me just $32.46 via USPS, and all I did was sit on my butt.

Re: [Elecraft] Shipping via UPS - A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

2022-04-11 Thread Andrew Moore
> I fail to understand

Apologies for getting off topic on a thread about our opinions of shipping
carriers and their prices but I have an Elecraft related question.

Got a note from Elecraft last Friday saying the KX2 ordered on Jan 1 is
ready to ship. Years ago I used a KX1 (sold, sadly!) with binding posts at
the transceiver feeding a radiator plus 2 or 3 counterpoise wires, with
some success. However, much of my KX2 use will be in the shack, where I'd
like to run coax to outside of the house before hitting the feedpoint -
figuring the radiator wouldn't do much good running mostly inside the
house. I'm thinking an end fed wire half wave with appropriate balun could
be good, as long as the radiator is outside the house. What would be an
appropriate configuration for the coax-to-radiator transition, or for this
setup in general? Looking to operate primarily on 40 meter CW. Suggestions
welcome.

Other than trying to remember and ignore by subject line, is there a way to
mute specific threads on the Elecraft mailing list (via qth.net)? Maybe I'm
thinking of the feature on @groups.io mailing lists - but this would be
helpful as Elecraft related topics morph into posts containing no Elecraft

Elecraft specific.

Re: [Elecraft] Feature request K4 ATU - nearest band tuning

2022-04-11 Thread Andrew Moore
I wonder if the K4 & tuner could a good enough approximation based on RX
signal level or even background noise level.

When I've done this manually, for both outside and within the ham bands,
using the L & C on my external tuner, I can hear the difference and know
generally where a good match is found.

Surely the K4 could do better than my ears. Seems like this would be
possible without even transmitting. Could be a great feature.

2022-03-30 Thread Andrew Moore
I'm not sure how big a company Flex is, but Elecraft is a small one doing a
great design and development and putting out some amazing products, while
having limited resources. A fair comparison might be against a company in a
similar position. Again, not saying Flex isn't (I don't know). Certainly
not the big three.

Hi Don - thanks for the suggestion. Any idea if the scratchy audio would
persist if the KDSP2 was put into bypass mode? I tried that and scratchy
audio was still there.

Thanks,

I replaced the KDSP2 with a newly built KAF2 today and am happy to report
the noise is gone. Not sure if the board swap had anything to do with it,

[Elecraft] K2 scratchy noise on RX CW signals

2022-02-16 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi Elecrafters -

Today I took delivery of K2 #892 and very happy to have it in the shack
after selling my #4958, I think it was, years ago... if anyone has it I'd
like it back please). This #892 has a "static sounding" scratchy/raspy
noise on top of CW signals. It sounds similar to what you'd hear from an
oxidized audio frequency pot. The strength and presence of the noise is
proportional to the incoming CW signal strength.

The rig is running from a clean, large high current capacity battery so I'm
sure the supply power is good. The noise occurs across multiple bands. I
get the sense it's something in the audio chain. The installed KDSP2
digital audio filter has already been put in bypass mode and the scratchies
persist.

Before I continue debugging I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions about
what components to target.

Thanks,
-Andrew / NV1B

Gordon,

Have you verified that your power supply and DC power cable
are delivering full voltage to your K3 when the K3 is set to deliver
110 watts output? This is a frequent cause of low power output.
Use the K3 internal voltmeter

Re: [Elecraft] Arecibo antenna collapses

2020-12-02 Thread Andrew Faber via Elecraft
This is certainly getting way off topic on the Elecraft reflector, but I can’t
resist mentioning that I have visited the FAST telescope in Guizhou Province.
Here is a brief explanation from my trip notes (we were guests because my wife
is an astronomer with many Chinese colleagues). It’s odd that they are
creating a tourist destination, since normally such telescopes are located to
minimize RFI.

“We were met by a driver from FAST in a Honda Odyssey for the two-hour drive to
Pingtang, China’s self-proclaimed “Astronomy City.” There is a huge amount of
new construction, as they try to take advantage of the FAST to create a tourist
destination. There are new shops and hotels being built, and on the sides of
the roads they even have statues and bas reliefs of famous scientists and
scientific instruments. FAST stands for “Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical
radio Telescope,” and that’s just what it is – outdoing the 300-meter radio
telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico by far. It’s in a valley that had a dozen or
so homes before they houses were demolished. It’s 500 meters across, and is
partly steerable, since the panels can be somewhat deformed by 4,000 actuators
pulling on cables that tug on the panels that comprise the reflective surface.
The receiving “cabin” is suspended on cables attached to six huge (maybe
350-400 feet tall) towers. So by moving the cabin and pulling on cables, they
can apparently track through about 20 degrees, unlike Arecibo, which is fixed
in a spherical shape. The actuators that deform the mirror into a parabola are
hydraulic and need only pull about a foot and a half or so on each cable.
Although it was late, we drove down for a quick look at the telescope, since it
wasn’t raining. It’s an unbelievably impressive mechanical construct.

Recently, I began trying to use the rear microphone jack on my K3 with my
Yamaha boom mike, instead of using a stand-alone USB sound card and feeding the
signal to the LIN IN jack. This worked fine for a couple of weeks, but today
when I tried it, I got very loud white noise driving my radio and amp
essentially to full scale. I have MIC SEL set to RPH BIAS, which has worked in
the past. Any MIC gain setting over 7 drives the amp to full output. When I
pull the mike plug out of the jack, the problem goes away.

Have I inadvertently messed up another setting, or perhaps a failure in the
mike?

Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants

2020-08-22 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hi,
I enjoyed the Ham Expo with plenty to see along with presentations from
various vendors. Getting to grips with the navigation was relatively
straight forward although the chat room got a little busy until I realised I
could turn parts of it off. Overall, it was more or less what I expected.
Not too fussed about joining in the kids game of collecting points.

My specific interest was the K4 presentations which Eric made look so easy
with his laid back style. I did get a bit confused with some of the
questions being raised as many were not on the on-line list of questions. I
presumed that they had been raised in advance although at one point I
suspected they had come from the Elecraft chat room. It did not detract me
from enjoying "the show", especially as I had three questions addressed.
Many other queries I had were answered as part of the presentation in a
pleasant straight forward manner.
Your 3D presentation was absolutely fascinating, what more can I say?
I got the impression Scott was caught on the hop but did his best.

Eric Guth was great

Several questions were answered in text mode within the chat box by someone
else. Unfortunately, I had a fleeting glance of one of my questions being
answered before it all disappeared at the end of the presentation. It would
be nice to see the text within the questions list be published alongside
some of the other Q sessions. I appreciate that this may be technically
difficult as well as the possibility of the requirement for "plausible
deniability", said with tongue in cheek!

Many thanks for all the effort put in, it made for a pleasant experience
after so long in lockdown.

Hi all,

I'd like to write up a summary of the recent [virtual] Ham Expo, especially
for the benefit of those who weren't able to make it. Perhaps they'll get a

success overall.

It was, shall we say, unique...I'd love to hear about your experiences,
good, bad, or in-between. Ideas for future expos are also welcome, whether
Elecraft-specific or applicable to the event as a whole.

This feedback will also be invaluable for the team that put on the expo,
including my good friend Eric Guth, 4Z1UG. (Don't let my acquaintance with

Re: [Elecraft] Foot Switch Doesn't Work

2020-07-29 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hi,
I went through something similar but it turned out to be the centre contact on
the PTT IN phono socket in the K3S. I tested the voltage on the socket and
everything seemed fine, also checked the cabling and microswitch on the foot
switch. Upon further inspection it looked like the inner connection on the
socket appeared to be splayed out slightly and just didn't make contact. In
fairness I did get the odd occasion that it worked but was certainly not
reliable. I had tried other phono plugs but to no avail.
Rather than open up the box I slightly squeezed the phono plug on the
footswitch to an oval shape. Not had a problem since.
Must remember to fix the socket at some point.

Hello All,

I've connected a Heil foot switch to to rear panel PTT In RCA jack and it
doesn't key my K3.

I searched the archives here and found that Don W3FPR had suggested testing
the foot switch of another unfortunate, Dick K9OM, who suffered the same
problem. This thread went unresolved, AFAICT.

I've tested the Heil and it checks out.

Any ideas as to why my foot switch will not key the K3?

Re: [Elecraft] OT Powerline Wifi extenders

2019-10-21 Thread Andrew Hebden
I used them briefly a few years ago for similar reasons, mainly old solid
walls.
As Rick said they were slow!
The other big thing I found (bear in mind it was few years ago) was the fact
that they only worked satisfactorily if on the same circuit. i.e. if the
signal went through the consumer unit the RCCBs attenuated it. I stopped
using the adapters and went for a wired solution using WAPs. There are some
manufacturers that make some WAPS with higher power output which may go
through the walls OK.

Another solution I looked at was TP-Link devices that have the directional
antennas and fit them in the roof spaces pointing downwards through the
timber ceilings etc.

City of New Orleans isn't especially amenable (elevation wise) for HF
operation, and my historic district makes erecting adequate antennas very
difficult. My radio was factory-built and includes many of the most
significant available options, including:

Internal 20-watt antenna tuner
Internal NiMH Charger with Real-Time Clock
Dual-Passband Roofing filter

It's been seldom-used (transmitting only on 10 meters as I still haven't
upgraded to General), and always indoors (no SOTA or similar ventures).

The radio also is mounted with the very slick, protective "ear" handles,
plus I'm including a Nifty! Ham Accessories Plexiglass stand that elevates
the radio and makes desktop operation considerably more comfortable.

Price: $1,000 + actual insured Priority or UPS shipping, via PayPal.

Please PM or email me for more information, and to see photos and the
original Elecraft invoice.

Thanks so much in advance, and best from NOLA,

Andy

2018-06-28 Thread Andrew Faber via Elecraft
For one data point, when I got up for other reasons this morning at 2:20
a.m., I turned on the radio, as I need KH1 on 160. They were very solid
copy on 1822.5, and easy to work, using my K3 and KPA500, with only an
inverted vee for TX and RX. I was surprised that they were solid copy, as
that's not usually my experience on 160.

Also look at: http://kh7z.net/
This appears to have the most real time official info.

They are running all K3S transceivers and KPA500's on all HF bands except
160,

where they are running a KPA1500.

You might want to try an industrial supply company like here:

https://www.mcmaster.com/#pedal-switches/=1b1gd3p

I have used one of the "steel" types for many years. The "iron types" are
really rugged but require, in my opinion, to much force to operate. Mine
dates

back to original use with my Heath SB400.

Untried but they have a PB pendant type too.

They are my go-to company for many items. Located here in NJ and I can
place a

6PM order and since I'm in the one day UPS zone get it the next afternoon.

try a sustain pedal. They typically have a switch which switches the
operation from on/off to a variable resistance (depending on what you are
using it for). It should work fine for PTT operation in the on/off mode,
and they are fairly rugged. I may have to try it soon just to see how one

[Elecraft] K1 - No RF out

2017-12-13 Thread Andrew Kiddle

Hi everyone,

I've recently got my old K1 out of store only to find that I cannot get
any RF out on TX.  I've checked the diodes in the ATU SWR bridge and
they measure up OK but did notice that the basic rig still works with
the ATU removed.  On scrolling through the ATU menu I found an error
message E00. Any advice on how to proceed would be gratefully received.

Re: [Elecraft] Yet another scam

2017-12-07 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hmmm,
I never submitted any details to QRZ.com, neither did my brother, father and
father-in-law et al. Most of the UK entries get set up from a periodic data
feed from either Ofcom (UK version of FCC) or RSGB. I had a bit of chasing
around trying to get my Father-in-Law and father removed from QRZ.com after
they became SK. My Father-in-law's call was being used in a scam based in the
Netherlands and I have to say that QRZ.com's admin were very helpful and prompt.
The main issue is that there would appear to be a number of SK calls still
listed.

Ummm ... QRZ.com downloads the FCC ULS at least daily, If you have a US
FCC-granted license, you will be there exactly as your license reads. Email and
bio are up to you. We moved a couple of years ago and I updated my address in
the ULS. It appeared on QRZ.com that night.

For non-US folks, it *is* whatever they have created themselves.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 not showing anything

Thanks Don, I decided to take a look again at the inside of the radio.
Re-seated all the cards and then took the bottom off. Guess what, that
single cable that attaches to the bottom of the board was disconnected,
probably from when I was putting the filter in. I connected that up and
all is right with the world again.

Thanks for all the help and always remember to check that cable on the
bottom of the radio :)

[Elecraft] Frustration with Elecraft

2017-06-13 Thread Andrew Holman
I want to share a couple things that have happened over the last couple
weeks for transparency, this is not to "slam" Elecraft in anyway, but what
I am hoping is a call for improvement on their end.

I have been a Flex user for about a year and have only been a ham for about
2 years. Most of the guys/gals in my club use Elecraft K3 or K3S
transceivers, while I liked the Flex I knew that I would have a wide range
of support for Elecraft from the local club.

Before Dayton, in order to replace my FT-857D I decided to buy a KX2 for
Field Day. I purchased and waited for it to ship, which took about 8 days
(approximately). I did not have it in time for Dayton, which I was OK
with. When asked if I could take advantage of any Dayton deals, I was told
"No". OK, no problem.

When I went to Hamvention this year, I asked someone at the booth to "take
my money" and convince me to buy an Elecraft radio. Depending on how you
look at the situation, I can see both sides of this. Some may say
"Elecraft doesn't want to take your money, the rig speaks for itself!"
others may say "What fools, the guy was willing to buy your radio!" For me
I was a little bummed that someone didn't feel the need to really sell me
on the radio (they barely spoke to me) someone who specifically asked them
to talk them away from Flex.

A few days after Dayton I get my KX2 and begin using it. I am mostly a CW
op and noticed that after a while the radio would "stick" on CW. It would
let out long tones etc., I did not see the error to start, but after a day
or so I saw a temp warning. I reached out to Elecraft, they said they
would fix the radio anytime I sent it back. I asked if I could wait until
after Field Day since this was purchased for that specific reason. They
were more than happy to oblige.

During this time I decided I was going to buy a K3S. I sold my Flex,
Maestro, FT-857D etc., and purchased the K3S kit and P3 Kit. Some HAM's
from the club and I put the radio together but it wouldn't work properly.
The RF/SQL Pot just was not working. We tried all kinds of things to fix
this, to no avail.

I reached out to Elecraft the next day, advised them that now, both of my
radios are having problems. I spoke to David who was extremely helpful.
After a good hour and ripping the thing apart again, we came to the
conclusion that one of the pots had a missing solder.

During the call I was advised that my new KX2 was going to be shipped and
that the old one could be put in the box with a return label at no cost to
me. This was on a Wednesday. I was told the new radio was being broken in
and would be shipped on Thursday. I go about soldering the bad pot for
RF/SQL and the K3S is back in business. Good for me, bad QA I suppose on
the Elecraft side as this is not something you assemble in the kit. I
believe the label on the bag said "Tested", if that was the case, I am not
sure how since that pot clearly did not work.

Days go by and it is now Monday. I reach out to Elecraft to see if my KX2
had shipped as I had not seen a tracking number. The response was a
bummer. The KX2 didn't ship and they need to see if there is a hold on
KX2's being shipped. I still replied back nicely saying, I hope not as it
was being checked last week for shipment. A little communication goes a
looong way.

K3S is working, KX2 still needs to be replaced, but I am thousands into the
Elecraft brand and both radios have had problems with quality control.

I am NOT posting this to be a slam at Elecraft as I know they have a great
reputation for quality radios and customer service. For me, in particular,
other than David, I guess I am the abnormal one of the bunch in that I had
two radios that were defective and Customer Service (as it pertains to
shipping, satisfaction etc.,) has been mediocre.

I sure hope things take a better turn for me and for those who purchase
after me.

To help others diagnose potential issues with their radio I am posting the
videos here for review, which have been seen by Elecraft.

NOTE: Notice I didn't even complain about the artifact on the LCD screen
during boot, which is yet a whole separate issue, which probably should be
fixed as well.

Thanks and Good DX!

Do you have anything connected to the 15 pin accessory jack on the K3?
I had the same symptom once last year, and tracked it down to a wiring
fault in a homebrew accessory cable.
If you do have something connected to that jack, try unplugging it
temporarily to see if the power down issue goes away.

[Elecraft] K3 does not fully powering down

2017-04-08 Thread Andrew UK
Hi

K3 08206, failed to power down, pressing the power button turned off the K3
display and the normal clicks were heard, but the LCD light remained on.
pressing the power button again, would not bring the K3 on. Only removing
the 13.8V for a few seconds and powering on brings it back. However the K3
will still not turn off properly.

I have saved the config, updated the firmware, and reset the K3 by pressing
shift and powering on. I still have the same issue. I have not got anything
attached to the rear apart from the Linear amp key line, and that has been
removed.

It looks like a hardware fault, if someone can give me some guidance.

Re: [Elecraft] Linear thoughts

2017-03-17 Thread Andrew Faber via Elecraft

Eric,
Hallelujah! First acknowledgment of such a possibility! I vote to put a
second amp module in the RF Deck (i.e., an RF deck that is the same as the
total size of the KPA500) and have a separate switching supply in another
box. 1200-1300 watts would be a sweet spot if 1.5K is a problem. Shoot for
30 pounds or under.

Interesting discussion.

Folks, if we did introduce a 1500 W solid state amp similar to our KPA500 in
operation, what features etc would be important?

[Elecraft] KPA-500 fix

2017-01-08 Thread Andrew Faber via Elecraft
I thought I would share a fix to my KPA-500 with the group in case someone
else might have the same problem.
I have an old amp (two-digit serial number), and it has performed flawlessly
until yesterday. Suddenly the Operate-Standby button stopped working, and
then I noticed that other buttons worked, but did strange things. The cure
was simply to take off the front panel and reseat the two ribbon connectors.
Actually I could only reseat the large connector at the panel end, and the
small one at the board it plugs into in the main body. The other end of the
large connector is at the back of the amp and not accessible without
considerable disassembly. And the panel end of the small connector was
stuck on so tight that I was afraid I would break something in removal. But
reseating 2 of the 4 possible connectors did the trick. Now it seems to be
back to normal.

Agreed. It's a workaround, not a fix.

Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] Workaround for FPF Firmware Load Failure: Cool it
down in the fridge first

My K3 (s/n 6000+) has developed the FPF Load failure problem: the K3 Utility
times out after a few minutes when trying to update the FPF firmware,
leaving "FPF Load" showing on the K3 display, and leaving the
K3 unusable.

This happens on Windows, Mac, and Linux, using three different high-quality
USB-to-serial adapters: Keyspan USA-19HS, Tripp Lite U209-000-R, and
Plugable PL2303-DB9. I can upgrade the MCU and DSP firmware without a
problem. The FPF load fails regardless of the version of the K3 utility I
use, the version of MCU or DSP firmware already installed on the K3, or the
version of FPF firmware that I am attempting to install.

In a panic after seeing the FPF load failure just before this past Field
Day, I came up with a workaround that has worked twice now:

==> Put the K3 in the fridge for an hour or two before doing the FPF
firmware upgrade.

On my K3, the FPF load fails when the front panel temperature is even at my
relatively low house temperature of 19C (as displayed on the front panel).
The longer the K3 has been powered up, the warmer the FP gets, and the less
time it takes for an FPF firmware load to fail. When I activate View->Trace
in the K3 Utility and watch the serial interaction under these conditions, I
observe that the rig starts taking longer and longer to acknowledge packets
sent, until finally it stops ACKing completely, at which point the utility
gives up.

When I refrigerate the K3, the reported FP temperature drops to 9C, and the
FPF firmware load works reliably. There are no dropped ACKs.

Your mileage may vary; refrigerate your K3 at your own risk, and definitely
do not freeze it.

Re: [Elecraft] great article on AGC by Fred Cady

2016-11-16 Thread Andrew Faber via Elecraft

Ian,
At P49Y, I also like to use SLP=0 for pileups, because then one can "ride"
the RF Gain control to try to differentiate signals within a pileup. On the
other hand, for casual operation, it is easier on your ears to use higher
values of SLP in order to make the volume of signals more constant. This
also works better in a contest for the second radio if it is used for S on
another band.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] great article on AGC by Fred Cady

Hi Ian,

Most of my operating has been contesting and dealing with pileups. I want
to have the most discrimination or differences between different strength
signals in the pile up. And it would also like the radio to be as linear as
possible. So I would normally use a high threshold and SLP=0 (oddly, that
is the steepest slope) so that loud signals sound loud and weak signals
weak. On the other hand, for rag chewing in a you might want all signals to
sound pretty much alike. Then choosing a low thr and slope=15 will flatten
out the signals.

Don has some great ideas on setting AGC in his article, especially regarding
noise. It is easy to hear (and see) if you have the THR set too low and
noise is activating the AGC. Tune to a noisy band and then start cranking
THR down. When you get too low you can easily hear the noise level
decrease. If you set up the dBV measurement you can actually measure the
reduction in audio level.

Re: [Elecraft] RX IQ USB Noise

2016-08-31 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hi,
This sounds like a 'hum loop' problem, the scourge of audio enthusiasts.
In effect there are two earth connections between the KX3 and PC and it
forms a small loop aerial where by it picks up mains interference. You could
try running the cables from the KX3 to the PC very close together.
It doesn't affect most people but I did get this problem a bit ago, but not
with my KX3. The solution for me was to fit two small audio isolation
transformers (one for each channel) in the IQ line, fitted in a small
project box, and the problem went away. This has long been the recommended
procedure for most audio lines between a PC and a rig.

Hope this helps.

I hope somebody knows how to fix this, I've tried different USB hubs,

Hi Leroy,
I recently bought a K3s and after eventually finding out that I had to change
the default configuration to have the bias turned on it seemed to work. My MH2

I still have a problem in that I don't find any difference between the high and

with the microphone about 3 inches away from my mouth otherwise I over modulate
which gives a very poor signal. I am sure something is not right but can't find
what is causing this at the moment.
It may be my big mouth but I don't have this problem with my KX3 which uses the
MH3 microphone and "expected" mic settings. Everything just works fine on that.
When time permits I will look into fitting a small attenuator into the mic lead
so that I can get a more stable ALC reading.
I haven't yet tried using the back panel mic socket but may give it a try soon
with my Sennheiser headset to see if it overcomes some of the mic gain issues I
have with the MH2.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Build - What have I forgotten

2016-05-01 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hi all,
Many thanks for your prompt replies. Family visits got in the way so I
wasn't able to gives things a try out until just now.
You were all quite correct, it was a simple newbie error. I am using the
Elecraft MH2 mic and had not thought about having to set it up. As expected
I just turned the mic bias on and all is well.
I can now get down to playing radio.

[Elecraft] K3S Build - What have I forgotten

2016-04-30 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hi,
I have completed my build following the manual and everything seems to work
fine until I started to try and set it up for SSB. I can get full output
using the two tone test but nothing through the microphone. I also tried a
another microphone plugged in to the rear mic socket. Still nothing.
Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] Is it possible?? Use SP3 spkr for main RX + internal spkr for sub RX??

2016-04-18 Thread andrew vavra
Does anyone know if the K3S internal speaker can be assigned Sub receiver for
dual receive while the Main receiver is piped to an external speaker like the
SP3?
I currently have a pair of non-Elecraft external speakers plugged into the rear
speaker jack and the rig set for speakers = 2.
I love the look of the SP3, but find the price tag to purchase two of them a
bit too high for my limited budget.

Hi Igor,
Although I haven't experienced your low temperatures I did get condensation
in the VFO encoder. The rig worked but only tuned for part of the turn of

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 on 2 Meters

2016-01-22 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hi John,
I use the 2m module in my KX3 and am pleased with the performance. Having
said this I really don't have much to compare it against apart from my
FT897D. What I do find is that the noise floor goes way down I don't have to
listen to a load of white noise when digging out those weak signals.
I use it for our UKAC 2m contest on SSB along with a small (old) Microwave
Modules Linear running 10 watts output and regularly make 300mile+ contacts
when using my 9el yagi at 40feet with shack located about 3feet above sea
level. It is far better at handling strong signals than the FT897D. The sort
of strong signals I get are of sufficient strength to start the KX3 high
signal shutdown process. (I have 3 of the UK's leading contenders within 5
miles across open fields.)
On the whole I am really enjoying using it. Furthest DX so far on 10w is
south of France at about 800miles during a slight opening.
Problems encountered:
- There are a couple of internal "birdies" which are not too bad.
- With the gain well up I do notice the "zipper" noise when tuning the VFO.
There are notes about this on the Elecraft website.

Back when the K3S first came out I did the math on the cost of upgrading a K3
Classic to add the K3IO, the new tuner, two KSyn3A's and all of the other
upgrades versus purchasng a new K3S, and came to the conclusion that I could
sell my old K3 Classic on eHam or eBay or privately (~4000 S/N range) and move
up to a brand new K3S for just a few hundred dollars additional.

By doing this I was able to reset the clock and start all over again with a
brand new rig with all the upgrades and a full year's warranty to boot.  You
can save even more by moving your sub RX from the old rig to the new rig -- the
Sub RX is one item which did not change.
Put your old price list and the new price list side by side and you will see
that most items have not increased all that substantially compared t the
benefits you receive when upgrading.

Also note that the KIO3B has all of the original KIO3 analog and digital
functionality and HW. Adding the usb sound and USB data hw to that did not
increase the end price by over $200.Lastly at ham radio market volumes, which
are much lower than most consumer
products, the cost to develop and support any design is folded in the price we
must charge over time. We can't survive any other way.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Band-Pass Filter Trimcap values

Hello Ted

From your callsign I'm assuming your are in the USA, in which case I would
recommend sourcing any required parts direct from Elecraft. I'm in VK-land so
it was expedient to source locally.

The values I had success with are noted below, which tallies with the advice
from Don and the updated errata I-3.

Best wishes with your K2 build.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Band-Pass Filter Trimcap values

2015-10-11 Thread andrew
Hello Don
Thanks very much for the useful information.
I was able to source some trimcaps with the correct pin-spacing and a nominal
range of 3 - 30pF.
The maximum values used bacame:
C21, C23, C32, C34 = 50pF
C44, C46 = 30pF
These resulted in all bands being easily tuned for peak output close to the
middle of the trimming adjustment.
Thanks again.

[Elecraft] [K2] Band-Pass Filter Trimcap values

2015-10-02 Thread andrew
During initial build I didn't have a signal generator and wasn't happy with the
band-pass filter alignment for the 12m and 17m bands which use trimcaps.
Revisiting the alignment with a newly acquired signal generator I found I
couldn't get a correct adjustment and removed C46 - it's maximum value is 66pF
when it should be approx 30pF.
I removed C32, C34 and C44 and all have a max of approx 66pF. I also checked
C21 and C23 which are correct with a maximum of 50pF. (and different physical
construction with Red mark)
Before I make replacements I would like to confirm that the correct values
should be:

C21, C23 = max 50pF
C32, C34, C44, C46 = max 30pF

Many thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Receiver Overload Protection?

2015-06-05 Thread Andrew Hebden
Harry,

Be aware that the preamp does not come back on. I encounter this problem
periodically when contesting in the UK (6m UKAC) as I have 2 very strong
stations nearby and while tuning through the band if I happen to be on
frequency when one of them transmits AND our antennas are pointing roughly at
each other the KX3 does the full close down as David describes.
On odd occasions I can be working someone near the noise level and one of the
locals fires up close to my frequency, this shuts everything down and by the
time I've recovered the DX station can have gone. I am looking into using an
external 6m preamp but I will probably experience the same issue.

Best of luck.

Harry,

Yes it appears to have

from Page 43 of the owners manual:

HI RFI warning, preamp turns off, or RX icon turns on: The KX3 protects itself
from high received signal levels. First, the preamp is turned off, if it was
on. (You may be able to avoid this by using the 10-dB preamp rather than the
20-dB preamp on the current band. See MENU:PREAMP.) The second step taken by
the KX3, if necessary, is to turn on a 15-dB attenuator stage in the I.F.
section, ahead of the receiver s A- to-D converter. The receive overload icon
(RX), near the ANT icon, will turn on. Once signals return to a safe level for
5 seconds, this attenuator will be turned back off. Also see COR (next item).

? Carrier-operated relay activated (a relay is heard, and the RX icon turns
on): The carrier-operated- relay (COR) may be activated due to the signal from
a nearby transmitter. This is usually due to close proximity between your
antenna and the other station s antenna. The COR is actually the relay for the
present low-pass filter. When the relay opens, signals will drop by 40 to 60
dB, protecting the KX3. The relay will close again shortly after the signal
drops. If the COR is being repeatedly activated, try moving the antennas
farther apart. You can also increase the COR threshold, at your discretion; see
MENU:COR LVL.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2015-01-30 Thread Andrew Faber
Yes, that was the problem when it happened to me. It was a cable problem
that was inadvertently closing the key in (PA Key) input on the back of
the KPA500. Clearing that up restored normal operation.

Hi Barry,

There is an asterisk that appears on the left side of the KPA500 display
whenever the key out signal from your transmitter is present. You should not
see the asterisk when you are receiving. If you are then is it possible that
you are using the key out signal to operate some other device in addition to
the KPA500?

My KPA500 has just developed an issue. Specifically when I switch it from
Stby to Oper, the level of received signals drops by around 5 or 6 s
points. It still transmits fine and there are no adverse SWR indications

loose co-ax plugs. It does the same on all bands. I switch back to Stby

the received signals return to normal.

I seem to recall that someone else posted details of a similar such

[Elecraft] FS Two E850463 15-pin KAT500 / KPA500 Cables

2014-12-20 Thread andrew vavra
Hello to all on the list.
I have two genuine Elecraft 15 pin cables that are used to interconnect the K3
to the KPA 500 and the KAT 500.
KAT500 to KPA500 Cable
KAT500 to KPA500 cable. Provides band data to KAT500 for band change prior to
TX,, and feeds through KPAK3AUX cable data from the K3 to the KPA500.
Typically used in addition to the KPAK3AUX cable from the K3 to route band
data, keying and AUXBUS data through the KAT500 to the KPA500. (The KAT500 has
AUX Cable IN and OUT connections.) This is the same 15 pin cable as is
contained in the KPAP3AUX cable set
They are surplus to my needs and are functionally cosmetically 100%.
They sell on the Elecraft website for $24.95 each.
I am offering them for half price -- $15 each or both for $25 + actual postage
to your destination.
Paypal or personal check OK.
Please contact me off list if interested.  My call sign at arrl.net.

Re: [Elecraft] Strange K3 KPA500 Issues fixed with a longer coax cable?

2014-11-19 Thread Andrew Hebden
Hi Jim,
We had a very similar situation a couple of years ago at our local club
station which was using Yaesu kit and a MFJ ATU. We had relocated the
station and used different (shorter) coax to wire it all up. We encountered
various problems the main one being a high SWR. The cables were checked but
nothing untoward was found. Then one member said that we shouldn't use short
cables and so we found some longer cables, about 2m long, (not the
originals) and everything worked fine.
We never did find out the reasoning behind not using the short cable
lengths.

on 1.9 and 14 MHz roughly the same. (D1 checks out on a meter)4.Both
signals are amplified through the LPA to the same level on the drains of Q5

(1.9 to 10MHz) being amplified?C23 on the LPA board 100PF is missing I
presume this is correct?any suggestion welcome 73's Andrew

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Tune button, does not key a linear

2014-08-27 Thread Andrew Faber
It does, and I find it very helpful for tuning a linear. I keep Tune power
set at 20 watts, and use it to get in the ballpark with the amp, then retune
at higher power. Different strokes.

[Elecraft] KX3 inscrutible scanning instructions

2014-08-20 Thread Andrew White
Can someone explain to me how to setup scanning on the Kx3? Explain it to
me like I'm five years old. The instructions in the owners's manual do not
work for me.

Also: not sure if anyone else has experienced this before: I built the KX3
from a kit and all I have been able to receive is AM stations. I tune my
antenna properly (alex loop) and I have not been able to find any other
stations on higher bands. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 124, Issue 10

2014-08-19 Thread Andrew White

to quote Wayne from 7/10/2014 7:55 PM

 quote
 Hi all,

Our firmware task lists are sorted by priority. Determination of
Priority is democratic to some degree (Squeaky Wheel and other industry
standard methodologies). But in practice it involves
 crystal-ball-gazing, head-counting, arm-wrestling-over-a-beer, and a
 healthy dose of what-we-have-time-for.

It is not practical for us to publish the lists.

That is nonsense. There are plenty of tools to easily track issues and
feature requests in a way that is no burden on your time. The best thing
you could do is open source your firmware on GitHub and let other people
start working on issues.

 They change daily and
contain a lot of firmware-speak. We'd rather spend time actually making
changes than on sanitizing lists for public consumption.

That is a job all in itself. It is called Product Management. If you don't
have anyone that does that full time now you should hire someone to do it.
If engineers are doing that now they should most definitely not be doing it.

On 8/14/2014 4:55 PM, Sam Morgan wrote:

No actually your premise is completely wrong. It will change that. Products
live and die by the feedback customers give to the company. With no public
issue tracking service offered by Elecraft of course it is going to look
like a black box when in reality the lack of transparency for change
requests is hurting the product.

People are making their own 3rd party products for Elecraft (for the KX3
for example) because crystal-ball-gazing, head-counting,
arm-wrestling-over-a-beer, and a healthy dose of what-we-have-time-for
doesn't scale.

To me that is just a silly expectation for ANY ham radio manufacturer to
consider. Can you just imagine what a quagmire Elecraft would generate if
 they open-sourced their firmware?

With enough eye balls looking at the code all bugs are shallow. I think
Elecraft could benefit from an extra 100 pair of eyes looking at the
problems at no cost contributing an average of 100 hours a week at it.
Could you imagine what kind of quagmire that could result in? A better
product no less!

They would have to stop producing
profitable products just to spend time trying to pull software 'expurts'
 out
of the trouble they themselves generated.

Breaking things is a necessary part of the process.

And once the 'community' turned the firmware into total trash, then you
would expect Elecraft to bail you out

You don't seem to understand what this entails. Elecraft would still
control software updates including open source contributions. The Internet
is built on open source protocols and software and ham radio manufacturers
would be wise to follow suit. This is a low risk, high gain move with
nearly zero switching cost.
