2024-07-06 Thread James
No discussions take place about Elecraft rigs that I own like KX3 KH1
or friend's KX2.
Sure seems that the big rigs have a lot of problems - so it has been
educational.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Spur/Birdie on CW Receive

2024-06-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
OK - mystery solved! I had posted this on the Elecraft reflector and shortly
thereafter realized it should have gone on the KX groups.io <http://groups.io/>
list. So, I put it there and THAT is where my answer came from. Now, why it
took almost a week to get into the Elecraft reflector is another question. But
anyway, my problem was fixed AND now I know why I’m seeing double! Sorry for
all the confusion, folks.

BTW - the “birdie” thingy was resolved by the Tech Mode entry RX ISO - turning
it ON got rid of the “birdie”. Thanks to JPE1HZG for clueing me in to that one.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Spur/Birdie on CW Receive

2024-06-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Wow - this is strange! I posted this last week and got an answer fairly quickly
- it was a setting in the tech mode menu that resolved it. Thought it was all
done. Then this morning around 08:30 local time I got a couple messages that my
post had been accepted from the reflector, and it all started over again!

Anyway, the “problem” is resolved on my end and now it looks like something
funky is going on with the reflector.

[Elecraft] KX3 Spur/Birdie on CW Receive

2024-06-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Folks -

I’ve got my KX3 connected via an MFJ 178B-SDR switch to my computer running
SDR++. This gives me a nice BIG pan adapter display on my monitor. Additional
software syncs the KX3 with SDR++ and RumLogNG - a logging program. Anyway,
When I have the KX3 in CW mode, I see a birdie or spur (not sure the actual
name for it) about 500 Hz up from my zero-beat frequency. As I turn the KX3
dial, the spur mores right along with me. It is showing with a signal strength
of about -79 db. Now I know that is a really low signal, but it does show up on
the display and is a tad annoying. Actually, as I type this I’m on 10.116 and
as I was testing, I find that there was a low level signal there, under the
birdie. The fact it was being covered up bugs me a bit, too.

No matter what band I go to, my little “buddy” is there with me. If I switch to
USB or LSB, it is gone - it only shows up in CW. And if I do CW-R, it switches
to about 500 Hz below my frequency.

Anyone else have this? Is it something worth reporting to Elecraft, or is it a
known “thing”.

multiband yagi. It only occurred on 20m.
Hope this helps.

[Elecraft] FS: OT: Two Balun Designs Unun Units

2023-10-14 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Still cleaning out stuff from the shack that has had little use and needs to go.

I have two Balun Designs Unun units for sale.

First is their model 9135sw, which is a 5kW 9:1 (450 to 50 ohms) unit. It has
side posts and a bottom SO-239 coax connector. It has been used for perhaps 10
minutes. It works perfectly, just not with my current wire antenna
installation. Due to physical property restraints (and HOA crap) I can’t really
adjust my wire antenna to get an acceptable SWR. A new 9135sw costs $95 plus
shipping. I can let this one go for $85, free shipping.

Second is their model 64131e. This is a 1kW 64:1 / 49:1 balun, designed for End
Fed Halfwave Antennas. The side post on the left is for the 61:1 connection,
two on the right - a 49:1 post and optional counterpoise post. Same situation
as with the 9:1 model above. Very, very little use - just doing some SWR
testing and was unsuccessful. A new one of these costs $116 plus shipping. My
price for this one is only $95, free shipping.

Neither Unun has been opened up. Both are in factory new condition. The ONLY
amount of RF sent into them was a few milliwatts via a Rig Experts AA-55 Zoom
SWR tool. Needless to say, building my wire antenna has been an expensive
experiment. FWIW - I ended up building my own Unun, a 36:1 unit that’ll only
handle a max of about 100 watts. Works well, but not what my ultimate goal was.
Oh well….

Anyway, if you are interested in either or both of these Unun units, please
reply off-list. I accept PayPal family & friends, cash or personal check.

Thanks & 73, Jim / K7TXA

Re: [Elecraft] Misc QRP Stuff

2023-10-05 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
As of 09:22 this morning (Mountain Time) only the QRP Guys Antenna Tuner and
two of the KXUSB cables are left.

If anyone is interested in some non-Elecraft QRP rigs (QDX and QCX Mini), I’ll
be posting four of them over on the QRPLabs Groups.io <http://groups.io/> site
later today. Or, contact me me direct via email if you want info and/or to
avoid the rush over there. :-)

[Elecraft] FS: Misc QRP Stuff

2023-10-04 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
For those of you with keen eyes, I just sold my KPA500 and KAT500 combo, as I’m
cleaning out stuff I no longer use. Here are a few more things for sale:

Pro Audio Engineering PAE-Kx33 Low-RFI power supply. Works very, very well with
the KX1, KX2, and KX3 - I used this with a KX2 and KX3 over the past couple
years. List price is $59 plus tax and shipping, I’ll sell this one for $40, no
tax, free shipping.

Elecraft KXUSB serial to USB-A cables (3). Has 3.5mm TRS plus on one end, USB
Type A on the other end. Converts the serial signal from the radio to USB. List
price for them is $39.95 each. I have three of them and will sell each for $20,
free shipping, no tax. All three for $50.

EMTECH ZM-2 ATU QRP 80 - 10 meter Antenna Tuner. This is a FACTORY-ASSEMBLED
manual tuner, with BNC connectors. Works well. Comes with the printed assembly
and operating guide. List price for the factory built unit is $105 plus tax and
shipping. Selling this for only $80, free shipping, no tax.

EMTECH ZM-2 ATU QRP 80 - 10 meter Antenna Tuner. This manual tuner was built as
a kit, with BNC connectors. Works well. Comes with the printed assembly and
operating guide. List price for the kit is $83.50 plus tax and shipping.
Selling this for only $45, free shipping, no tax.

QRP Guys 40-10 meter Multi Tuner. Built from a kit. Seems to work but I’m not
totally impressed with it. Maybe I’m just impatient… List rice for the kit is
$50. Selling this one for $25, free shipping, no sales tax.

PayPal friends and family preferred; cash or personal check is OK (ten days to
clear, sorry).

[Elecraft] FS: KPA500 / KAT500 Combo

2023-10-04 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Time to clean house of items that are rarely used. I’m selling my KPA500
(serial # 3645) and KAT500 (serial #2726). Both were built by me a few years
ago and work perfectly. I started out using them with a K3, then a K4D, and
most recently a Kenwood TS-890. Both the tuner and the amp work perfectly.
Neither has any scratches, dings, or dents and have been used in 100 percent
non-smoking environments. The amp is set for 117 volt operation and includes
the correct power cable.

Included will be the following manuals: KPA500 Kit Assembly Instructions,
KPA500 Owner’s Manual, KAT500 Owner’s Manual, and the Fred Cady (KE7X, SK) book
on the KPA500 and KAT500, 2nd edition.

In addition you’ll get the interconnecting cables. I currently have the pair
connecting my TS-890. You’ll get the corresponding cable(s) for that
arrangement along with the cables to connect to a K3 or K4 if that’s what you
have.

The amp and tuner have been in use here at my Idaho QTH for 2-1/2 years,
connected to a Zerofive Flagpole Vertical. With 110 feet of RG213, the tuner
has been able to get a match on 160 - 6 meters, no small feat indeed! Sadly, I
simply don’t use the amp and tuner all that often, I need the dollars, so
they’ve gotta go.

The KPA500 will be shipped in an Elecraft factory double boxed carton. I’ll
have UPS professionally package up the KAT500.

I much prefer to sell the amp and tuner as one package, price: $2,900, FREE
SHIPPING, NO SALES TAX. Check the price for a brand new pair and add tax - my
price will save you some serious dollars!

I prefer PayPal friends and family, but will accept cash or personal check (10
days to clear a check, sorry).

Please contact me off-list. K7TXA at ARRL DOT NET

Yes, but the amp is not seeing the mis-match, correct? The tuner is taking care

happy… Yes?

[Elecraft] KPA500 Fan Question

2023-05-14 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Got a question (problem?) regarding the fan in my KPA500. I'm driving the amp
at 29 watts from a Kenwood TS-890S. The amp is connected to a KAT500, which in
turn is hooked to a 30 foot tall Zerofive flagpole vertical. The tuner has
provided me with a nice 1.2:1 SWR, as displayed on the amp. The resting temp of
the amp shows 42C. At 29 watts input to the amp, I’m seeing about 480 watts of
power from the amp. The amp has nothing sitting on top of it, and the wall
behind it is over 12” away. There is about 2” clearance on either side of the
amp, and it is sitting on top of the KAT500.

The issue: The fan comes on in a very short time - less than 20 seconds - and
the temp display runs up to 50+ degrees. If I start calling CQ or get into a
QSO, it doesn’t take long for the temp to show over 60 degrees and the fan is
running at max.

When I had a K3 and more recently, a K4D - this did NOT happen. The fan would
come on but NEVER at the max, loud level. Interestingly, many moons ago I also
had a KX3 and had it connected to the KPA500. I noticed that the fan would also
come on fairly quickly with that rig driving the amp, but I never thought too
much about it. Until now...

But now, I think there is some sort of problem. It seems to me that the temp
shouldn’t get that high that fast nor should the fan start roaring in that
short amount of time. I could understand it if the SWR was really bad, but at
1.2:1

Any ideas why the amp fan should be acting this way with a non-K3 or non-K4
driving it?

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K4] K4D with KAT4 Tuner

2023-05-04 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
OK - surprised, I am - not one single offer for my K4D that I posted on
Tuesday. So, I suppose I need to lower my expectations (and price).

The K4D with internal KAT4 tuner is now for sale for $5,500, no tax, free
shipping to any USA address.

[Elecraft] FS: K4D with KAT4 Tuner

2023-05-02 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Folks,

After a lot of “should I / shouldn’t I” discussions with myself I’ve come to
the conclusion that I probably should let go of my K4D, serial number 636. It
has the KAT4 internal auto-tuner in it. It was put into service in April of
2022 and has been here at my home, in a non-smoking environment ever since. It
works perfectly, has no scratches or dents. The majority of its use has been on
CW, with perhaps ten percent of my QSOs being FT8. I’ve had it connected to a
KPA500/KAT500 since installation last year.

A brand new K4D with KAT4 will run you $6,480 plus any applicable sales tax. In
the state of Idaho (6 percent rate) that would come out to another $388, so
buying a new one here would set you back $6,868. Plus…. You’ll have to wait for
shipment - not sure what the current backlog is at Elecraft.

I’ll sell this one for an even $6,100, NO TAX, FREE SHIPPING (in the original
Elecraft cartons) the day after payment made to any USA address. I prefer
Paypal Friends and Relatives but would also accept a cashier’s check. Please
let me know if you are interested. :-)

Also posting this on the K4 Groups.io site.

[Elecraft] K3S dead.

2023-04-25 Thread James Holohan
My K3S (Serial No. 11048) is completely dead and pressing the power button has
no effect. FS1 and FS2 checked out OK. Removed KP3A to eliminate that as a
possible cause. Measured 13V on pins 1,2 & 3 of Q2 but nothing on pins 5 to 8.
Appreciate any guidance on this fault.

Re: [Elecraft] TL-922

2023-03-29 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
Josep,

Be sure to install a soft-key interface in the TL-922 before hooking it up to
the K3.

https://harbachelectronics.com/shop/kenwood-tl-922/sk-922-soft-key-keying-interface/

The newer rigs were not meant to handle the voltages on the older amplifier's
keying circuits.

I modified mine with the soft-key board and added the new capacitor block.

Hi guys,

Have a couple of Kenwood TL-922’s around and was thinking to connect one to a
K3.
Has anybody done so.? And if so, how have you done the wiring.?
Got 2 K3’s (in fact I have 3 of ‘em, but one not physically at now now) and
maybe one day I can use the spare one with a TL-922 from another QTH.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Running high power

2022-11-23 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
Al,

I saw your question and saved it, as I knew you would be getting much better
responses than I can give. I have five amplifiers, as I tend to like building
stations.

You received the responses I expected. Grounding and bonding are indeed
important and great information is found on K9YC's page as well as the ARRL
publication "Grounding and Bonding for the Radio Amateur". Yes, mix 31
ferrites are your friend. There are many sources; I bought mine from Pro
Audio. Sadly, many consumer devices are very poorly designed for RF
environments. Some problems can be mitigated, some not.

I do not know if anyone has talked about using a well-tuned antenna system,
keeping SWR low and RF out of the shack.

I am fortunate that the only interference to devices in my home occur on 160,
but I'm sure most of that is because I'm using an antenna similar to a G5RV fed
with 450 ohm twin lead, I short the twin lead and then use an UNUN and antenna
tuner to achieve resonance. (?Marconi "T"?) I do have a counterpoise.

I know many do not talk about amplifiers as they are shamed for using high
power. Whatever. I saw someone at the 2019 Dayton Hamvention with a shirt
that said "1500 watts - 1 watt = QRP!" No shame there.

The one thing I do know, the problems that you can get from a high-power home
installation do not even come close to running high power mobile. That WAS a
nightmare.

The one universal thing about amplifiers is that when the doorbell rings, the
amp gets turned off!

Good luck-this is an interesting journey!

Thank you for all your responses. I did not mean my question to solicit the
thousands of ways of solving this problem, but merely a poll of hams'
experiences running high power. Based on all of the private and public
responses I received, it's about 50% who've had problems with consumer
equipment and high power.

If the problems are caused by simple RF overload of the piece of equipment,
I've never understood why balanced or unbalanced antenna systems make any
difference. If your 1500 W signal induces a large interferer on the circuitry
of your internet modem or garage door opener, the device has no idea whether
you're using a Yagi or a dipole or a vertical or whatever. It's just being
overloaded because it's in the near field of the antenna and has very poor
rejection and filtering. You could have the best-balanced antenna system in the
world and still get into a poorly-shielded modem, couldn't you? The
interference isn't coming in through the wires, it's coming in through the air!

I tend to resonate with K9YC's assertion that there are a whole lot of devices
out there that are designed badly, susceptible to the slightest overload. When
I look at my own situation I notice that I have tons of devices that were
completely unaffected. My telephones, lights, garage doors, overhead fans,
smart thermostat, and many others-- all of which have RF circuitry to one
degree or another-- were never bothered.

Taking the FM radio in the kitchen as an example, you could make the argument
that since its whole purpose in life is to receive weak signals, that it's
particularly vulnerable to a large HF signal. But not a single person mentioned
that they've ever heard themselves coming through their FM radio. I must have
the only cheap table radio in America!

Anyway, I envy those of you who told me, "I haven't the slightest idea what
you're talking about."

R,

Al W6LX

Re: [Elecraft] Running high power

2022-11-22 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Al - I’m not on the RFI reflector, but wanted to give you a quick reply here,
since it in a way does involve Elecraft things. I have a K4D, KPA500, KAT500
and run RG-213 to a 30 foot tall Zerofive Flagpole vertical in the back yard -
10 various length radials. I put isolation transformers on each end of the coax
run. The main RFI issue I had with this setup, running 500 watts, was that I’d
turn on the overhead lights in our two garage door openers. A couple mix 31
ferrite clamp-ons at the opener motor box took care of that problem. Every
situation is different. If you’ve got your equipment properly bonded together
and grounded, then attack each device with ferrites. It’s a PITA, but not
insurmountable.

Like Pete mentioned - there probably will be some RFI to deal with one way or
the other. It’ll come from common mode current on your feed line or simply
having some household device swamped by RF that it isn’t designed to handle.
Trust the mix 31 ferrites - they are your friend!

BTW - didn’t have that issue running my K4 at 100 watts - only when I got above
about 350 did those lights turn on. :-(

[Elecraft] Design flaw in K3s

2022-11-07 Thread James Michener
It isn't a matter of if your K3s will fail, it is a question of when.
The radio's current sense resistor (SMD 1206) is rated at 1/2 watt,
while (depending on options) will dissipate nearly 2 watts at 10 watt
transmit.  It took several years but my resistor drifted from 0.05 ohms
up to 0.068 ohms triggering HI CUR errors whenever I turned on the sub
receiver.  I am glad it didn't unsolder itself.   I did this write up on
the web.

http://k9jm.com/K3sCurrent/ElecraftHiCur.html

Note:  The original K3 has a higher wattage current sense resistor and
should be fine they cheapen the K3s

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 MacOS M1 Mini

2022-09-24 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
David,

I used a K3 up until about three months ago on my Mac Mini (intel-powered) with
no problems at all. The K3 was sold and now the Mini is connected to a K4D,
which also plays well on the platform. My Mini has 32GB on non-Apple Ram and
the hard drive (SSD) is 1TB. OS is Monterey 12.5.1

Like another poster, I used MacLoggerDX (MLDX) for all of my logging and
SkookumLogger for contesting - a great combination. Don at Dog Park Software
has been super quick answering any questions I have on MLDX, in addition to
providing quick fixes for some minor issues. Also, I have an IC-705 that shares
my four keys, antenna, and MLDX.

For sure - I’d like to switch my Yamaha CM-500 headset between my K4D and an
Icom IC-705. I currently have to use two separate headsets - a PITA to say the

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 / 270V ERR

2022-07-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Folks - I’ve exchanged email with Rob at Elecraft support. He tells me that a
failed R16 on the power supply board should have no effect on the 60V supply,
so I’m opting to NOT rip the amp apart in search of R16. Waiting on Rob to send
me an RSA and the amp will be off to Watsonville for some first aid. I’ll post
back here when it is returned and let you know what went south.

[Elecraft] KPA500 / 270V ERR

2022-07-17 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Hi - I’ve had my KPA500 serial number 3645 for several years and until today
have had zero problems with it. Previously it was driven by a K3; currently
(until today!) a K4D. Last time I used it, it worked great. Today I powered it
on after having it off for several days and when I went to Operate mode, I got
the dreaded 270V ERR display. When I display HV it shows “1”. Everything else
seems to be OK - band changing works fine, metering of the power and frequency
are OK - just can’t go to Operate mode. The top cover is on just as tight as it
has been for years. Fuses are all OK.

Looked through the archives and did see a few hits, but most were related to
loose top cover or incorrect voltage settings.

I’ve fired off an email to Elecraft support earlier today but thought I’d run
it by the owner community too.

Suggestions?

[Elecraft] OT FS Mosley Mini-32-AW HF Yagi - New In Box

2022-07-05 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Hi folks,

A few months ago I posted this antenna for sale but got no takers. I still have
it and would really like to get it sold and out of my garage. Here is my
original post, slightly edited:

"I’m selling a brand new, never out of the box Mosley Mini-32-AW two element
yagi. The antenna covers 20-17-15-12-10 meters. It is a two element yagi on
20-15-10 and a rotatable dipole on 17 and 12 meters. Boom length is 6 feet.
Longest element is 19.7 feet. Weight is only 12.5 pounds.

I ordered this antenna prior to making a decision to move to Idaho in 2020.
Once paid for, that was it - no refund, no exchange, so I had to accept it.
Thought maybe I’d have a home here in the Boise area where I could put it up
but unfortunately my XYL talked me into buying a new home in an area with
strict CC regs against any outdoor antenna. I wound up with a ZeroFive 30’
Flagpole Vertical that works very well.

Anyway, I need to sell this nice Mosley yagi. As I mentioned, it has never been
taken out of the box. It comes with the original manual, the Mosley
registration card, and my sales receipt. My cost was just over $600. If you
order a new one, you’ll have a manufacturing wait time of three months or more,
and the prices have gone up.

I’ll sell this one to you for $500, shipped at my expense. If you prefer to
pick it up in person I’ll knock $25 off the price.

PayPal or cash, please. Contact me at: k7...@arrl.net

Re: [Elecraft] WTB: K4

2022-06-20 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Very true, but worth asking. That is exactly how I managed to get my K4D #636
last month. The one I had on order was scheduled for a Nov-Dec delivery and one
came up for sale here on the reflector. It took me about 2 microseconds to
reply and claim it. Glad I did - it is a pleasure to use. And I’ve found
absolutely zero faults with it. It was a simple plug and play, replacing my
trusty 10 year old K3. Love that mini Pan!

[Elecraft] Stamps

2022-06-07 Thread James MacMillan
My dad W8ZEQ was also a stamp collector.
When the band was open in ‘57 he worked I1FT/Egone a few times. He introduced
him to his neighbor Alvase another stamp collector. For over a decade envelopes
of US and Italian stamps crossed the oceans, stamps on the inside and outside
faithfully mounted in albums.

It was also the time a five year old began to pay more attention to the short
waves. It was quite a journey from the Viking II to the KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Collecting stamps vs. seashells -- and why this is not wildly O.T.

2022-06-07 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
I can certainly relate to the parallels. I’ve been US stamp collected (and now
online dealer) since age eight. My collection now is at the point where adding
just about any stamp to a blank spot could run close to what it would take to
buy a used car. Thus, the poor collection is opened only occasionally.

I’ve been hamming since age 16 as a novice back in PA. Still chasing DX, mostly
on CW, but every once in a while on FT8. As opposed to those rare stamps, the
rare DX costs next to nothing to acquire, save some time away from family
matters. But the beauty of ham radio is that there are s many other facets
of it besides DX’ing. One can collect counties, try for 9BWAS (Nine Band Worked
All States), or even go for it with QRP.

Lots of great reasons to get on the air and actually converse with people!

[Elecraft] FS: Tascam US-125M USB Sound Card for K3/K3S

2022-05-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Didn’t get any offers on this sound card when I listed it before, so lowering
price and trying again…

I have no need for this Tascam sound card. I used it for years to run digital
modes (JT65, JT9, FT8, PSK31) with the K3, a KX3, and a KX2. Works great!
Included is the Tascam in the original box, a pair of audio cables (RCA
connectors on the Tascam end; and Stereo TRS connectors on the radio end), and
a USB A to B cable wrapped around a pair of 2.4” mix 31 ferrite cores to stop
any pesky RF from getting into your computer.

Asking $80 shipped free via USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box to any US address.

[Elecraft] OT / FS: Tascam US-125M USB Mixer / Sound Card

2022-05-11 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Now that my K3/P3 combo has been sold and I have a shiny new K4D, I have no
need for this Tascam sound card. I used it for years to run digital modes
(JT65, JT9, FT8, PSK31) with the K3, a KX3, and a KX2. Works great! Included is
the Tascam in the original box, a pair of audio cables (RCA connectors on the
Tascam end; and Stereo TRS connectors on the radio end), and a USB A to B cable
wrapped around a pair of 2.4” mix 31 ferrite cores to stop any pesky RF from
getting into your computer.

Asking $90 shipped free via USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box to any US address.
PayPal, cash, or personal check.

Re: [Elecraft] PayPal holding payment. (Follow up)

2022-05-08 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
However, one must take things with a grain of salt… my wife and I have used
Facebook Marketplace over the past two years and are very happy with it. Not
sure I’d buy something off of it without seeing / touching it, though. Prior to
our move to Idaho in 2021 we had literally a ton of “stuff” we needed to get
rid of, rather than moving it all up here. Tools, electronics, washer/dryer,
basketball hoop, household items, etc. We put it on FBM and marked it as “Local
Pickup Only”, cash or Venmo payment. We pocketed several thousand dollars prior
to packing up our moving PODS.

After getting here we needed a couple bicycles for the kids - FBM again. You
get to see it before handing over the green.

That’s my two pesos.

[Elecraft] FS: K3/P3 Combo

2022-05-06 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
My new K4D has arrived! Thus, selling my trusty K3/100 and P3 combo. The K3 is
serial number 4359 and was built by me as a kit. The P3 is serial number 878
and was also built by me as a kit. Both have been in nearly daily operation
since being “born”. They’ve been in a non-smoking environment since day one.
Neither has had a bit of trouble (other than replacing a cracked VFO-B knob)
and neither has ever been back to Elecraft for any service. Both are at current
firmware versions. While the K3 does not have the “K3$” upgrades, it still
works very, very well.

The K3 includes the following:

K3/100 100 W Transceiver
KAT3 Antenna Tuner
KRX3 2nd Receiver
KFL3A-400 400Hz, 8 Pole Filter (x2)
KFL3a-1.8k 1.8kHz 8 Pole filter (x2)
KFL3B-FM FM-bandwidth 8 Pole Filter
K144XV-100-K 2-m Module
K144XV REFLOCK
KXV3A RX Antenna, IF Out & Transverter Interface

All interconnecting K3>P3 cables & power cables are included.

Printed manuals Included:

K3 Kit Assembly Manual
K3 Owner’s Manual
KRX3 Subreceiver Installation & Operation Manual
KAT3 100-Watt Tuner Installation Manual
KPA3 100-Watt Amplifier Installation Manual
K144XV 2-Meter Installation & Operation Manual
K144XV Ref Lock Osc. Installation Manual
KXV3A Interface Option Installation Manual
K#\3 & KX3 Programmer’s Reference
P3 Panadapter Owner’s Manual

Spiral-bound Elecraft K3 Fred Lady (SK) manual

Price is $2,400 shipped UPS anywhere in US. If you want to pick it up at my QTH
in Eagle, ID I can knock off $125. I’ll accept PayPal, Zelle, or personal
check (must clear before shipping).

Steve - that did the trick. Just before I read your reply I came across the
TX>Line In in the Intro guide. Sure enough, there is plenty of ALC bar now.
I’ve got mine at 40 and it puts me one bar below the “5” mark.

Hi Dave - thanks for the reply.

Understood about #1 - I forgot that WSJT-X can force the radio to do stuff.

On #2, I use a Mac so things are a little different. The Mac has an Audio MIDI

maximum.

Anyone else have input on this subject as a Mac user?

[Elecraft] K4 Data Mode Questions

2022-05-06 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Two questions on using my new K4D for data mode, specifically, FT8.

First, with both VFOs set to DATA mode, no matter what I do I am only able to
get two bars on the ALC meter. I read in the operator’s guide that I should
keep it under the “5” mark. On my K3, I always kept four solid bars and the 5th
flickering. Obviously two bars is wy under that “5” mark, but why, when I
advance the MIC level from 1 all the way to max, does the ALC meter only stay
at two bars? I am able to make contacts on FT8 so the thing is working, but I’m
puzzled. Should I be able to get more than two bars of ALC in DATA mode?

Second - the K4 seems to think for itself. After scratching my head regarding
that ALC level issue, I decided to try using USB mode. I put both VFOs into USB
and…… this sneaky radio automatically switched both of ‘em back to DATA mode as
soon as I transmitted. Is that normal / expected?

[Elecraft] OT: KWM-380

2022-04-03 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
I'm sorry you had so much trouble with your KWM-380. My experience is quite
the opposite. I did send mine to be completely refurbished and calibrated
and it is easily the quality of my KWM-2A and more. Techs who work on the
KWM-380 are listed on the Collins Collectors Association website. I used
Bob Struk KX6K.

Sorry about the off-topic post.

incredibly noisy, obstructing reception of all but the loudest signals.
The audio is distorted and filtering is poor. Collins' last hurrah was a
dud.

Hi Ed,

I don't recall ever telling you this but your 380 also had horrible TX phase
noise. In the early 80s, we were located within 5 miles of each other in CO,
both running amps. Whenever you transmitted on 80 or 160, the phase noise
would cover the entire CW bands. I don't recall what you replaced the
380 with but I was a very happy camper when you did!

I take pride that my KSYN3A-updated K3 is still one of the cleanest CW
signals on the bands.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-04-01 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
No - it does not spontaneously go into transmit more. The problem is that on
the non-Elecraft radio, placing the KPA into transmit mode (with a button push
on the KPA) drops the non-Elecraft radio’s receive signal tremendously. See
Jack’s explanation in an earlier post on what the K3 is doing to the “system”
when it is powered off.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-04-01 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Chuck,

Just gave it a try. No joy, same result - lowered rx signal strength on the
IC-705. Jack indicated that the K3 sets the Vcc rail to zero volts on power
off, and that is causing the amp to go into Operate mode.

I see the following options -

1. Always put the K3 on the same band as the IC-705 if I want to run QRO with
the 705.

2. Never use the 705 in QRO mode.

3. Disconnect the K3 from the system, sell it, wait for the K4D to be
delivered, and use the 705 all by itself with the amp and tuner in the mean
time.

Option #1 works but is a minor PITA. Option #2 - maybe. Option #3 - probably
the choice to make, as the K3/P3 was going to be sold anyway, in anticipation
of the K4D arrival. Just hoping I’ll live long enough to see the new radio
delivered.

Oh well, nothing in life is simple. At least I’ve got options and am able to
get on the air. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-04-01 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Jim,

I don’t think this is the same problem as you had. The receive signal on my K3
does NOT drop off when placing the amp in OPER. With my antenna switched over
to the IC-705 (not the K3), the received signal does drop off when the amp is
placed into OPER mode. Thus, I’m pretty certain that R7 and the PIN diodes are
OK - the K3 is not affected.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-04-01 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Well, it looks like there is no simple solution to this dilemma. I was hoping
to (easily) be able to use the amp with either rig while both were here in the
shack. Pulling the audio cable when I want to use the IC-705 with the amp isn’t
practical due to the location of the radio. I changed the “Radio” setting from
K3 to Analog and Serial, but with the cables attached, the result is the same -
as soon as the amp is put in OPER mode it goes into transmit state (* showing
on the LCD).

So, the only option for the time being is to always have the K3 powered up and
on the band that I want to operate the IC-705 on. Just need to keep their
frequencies separated as much as I can. Unless Jack comes up with an
alternate…! :-) :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-03-31 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Bob -

The * appears when I key the K3 and the amp is in operate mode. Likewise if I
key the 705 and the amp is in operate mode, with the K3 powered on.

If I power off the K3 and place the amp in operate mode WITHOUT KEYING IT, the
* appears, so you are correct - the amp thinks it is being keyed.

There is a jack on the 705 that allows one to key an external amp. I have that
line running to the amp. Disconnecting it makes no difference the * appears as
soon as I put the amp into operate mode. If I power on the K3, this does not
happen. However, with the K3 powered on and that cable disconnected, the amp
does not key at all, so it is working as expected - but only with the K3
powered on. Somewhere the K3 is getting its foot in the door when powered off…

Jim / K7TXA

p.s. do you have any idea what Jack was talking about when he said "switch the
RADIO setting of the KPA from K3 to something else, either Serial or Analog”??

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-03-31 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
I was unable to try Jack’s suggestion of disconnecting the AUXIO cable - doing
so made the KPA5000 not able to go into Operate mode. So, I wanted to do the
other option he mentioned - changing the “radio” setting of the KPA to Serial
or Analog. Unfortunately, I have no idea where that setting is. It isn’t in my
version of the KPA Utility: V1.19.9.6. I sent Jack an email about it but he’s
evidently off-line. Anyidea where that setting might be found?

My KPA shows the correct band on its display. The failure ONLY happens with the
K3 powered off. When it is powered up and set to the correct band, the audio
level in the IC-705 does not change when switching the amp from operate to
standby.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-03-31 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Having an issue with my KPA500 and a non-elecraft radio. I’ve got an Icom
IC-705 connected to my KPA500 and KAT500. By dropping the 705’s output power to
4 watts and pressing Tune on the KAT500 with the amp in OPER mode, I’m able to
get the tuner to give me a good match on just about all bands to my Zerofive
Flagpole Vertical. Then, turning the power level up to max (10 watts) on the
IC-705, the amp gives me anywhere from 210 to 250 watts output, depending on
the band. And that’s fine for me right now.

However, what I’m seeing is that when the amp is in OPER mode, my receive
signal strength drops way, way off to the point I have to go full AF volume to
hear signals. If I put the amp in STBY, signal levels go back to normal. I also
notice that the amp fan doesn’t take too long to crank up to high speed, and
the PA temp is sitting around 67 C.

I also have a K3. When I power up the K3 and switch the antenna over to the K3
on the same band as the IC-705 - there is no drop in signal level on it when
switching between OPER and STBY on the amp. And, yes, when I’m using the
IC-705, I press the corresponding BAND button on the amp.

OK - some further info: if I have the K3 sitting on the same band as the IC-705
this does not happen - going from STBY to OPER on the amp makes no difference
on receive level on the IC-705. But if I power off the K3, the IC-705 reverts
to its partially-deaf state.

Somewhere long ago in a far distant galaxy, I recall Jack W6FB mentioning that
the K3 pulls some signal to zero when it is powered off. I suspect that may be
what is happening here but for the life of me I can’t recall the exact
conversation. I’d like to get to the point where I can run the IC-705 with this
tuner and amp without having the K3 in the equation, as the K3 will be going on
the sale block in the near future, in anticipation of a K4D delivery.

Any ideas? Jack - are you listening? :-)

[Elecraft] OT: KWM-380

2022-03-30 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
OK,

I know this is the Elecraft list, but since the topic of the Rockwell-Collins
KWM-380 seems to be of interest, I have one (serial number 14), and yes, it is
no comparison to the rigs of today, especially the K4. It was introduced at
the 1979 ARRL Midwest Division Convention in Cedar Rapids, IA with a price tag
of $2,995 without options. Using an inflation calculator would put it at
$11,704 in today's dollars, fairly close to the cost of an ICOM IC-7851. It
really is a sweet radio, and VERY fun for non-competitive operating. It truly
was ahead of its time. Only 3000 of these units and the HF-380 (its commercial
cousin) were made. Production ended in 1986, and was the last amateur radio
unit made by the company.

I don't want to continue an OT discussion here, but if you have an interest,
please look at my QRZ.com page for a few pictures.

There's not a lot on the web re: KWM-380 except for sales. I recall little
about it except that it was very expensive for the time. I think the KWM-2
went for about $1,500 new? in the 60's, that would be about
$15,000 in today's money, although it wouldn't be an attractive transceiver in
today' world. But, a -380 was a pretty hot radio in those days.

[Elecraft] OT FS: Mosley Mini-32-AW HF Yagi - New In Box

2022-03-27 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
I’m selling a brand new, never out of the box Mosley Mini-32-AW two element
yagi. The antenna covers 20-17-15-12-10 meters. It is a two element yagi on
20-15-10 and a rotatable dipole on 17 and 12 meters. Boom length is 6 feet.
Longest element is 19.7 feet. Weight is only 12.5 pounds.

I ordered this antenna prior to making a decision to move to Idaho last autumn.

I’ll sell this one to you for $525, shipped at my expense. If you prefer to
pick it up in person I’ll knock $25 off the price.

PayPal or cash, please. Contact me at: k7...@arrl.net

[Elecraft] OT FS: Multiple Shack/Rig Accessories

2022-03-23 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Trying to do some spring cleaning in the shack - hey, it IS spring, right??? :-)

Prior to my move out of CA, I had a solar panel in the yard, feeding into the
shack where I had a MorningStar PS-15M solar charge controller and a bank of
AGM batteries. I also used the KI0BK Low Loss PWRgate sold by Flint Hills Radio
sitting between the battery and an MFJ 4245MV power supply. And…… I used an
N8XJK Boost Regulator (with separate meters) to keep a constant 13.8 volts
going to the station equipment. Well, I no longer have the batteries or the
solar panel, so the charge controller, PWRgate, and boost regulator are just
taking up space. Out they go!

One other item I no longer need is a Pignology PIGLET. I used this to “connect”
my now-long-gone KX3 to my laptop when operating away from the shack.

Prostar Charge Controller PS-15M with original manual: $90

KI0BK PWRgate: $25

N8XJK Boost Regulator with Remote Meter Panel Model R-1: $150

Pignology PIGLET: $25

Items will be shipped FREE to any US address.

p.s. - the boost regulator comes with cables wrapped on 2.4” mix 31 ferrite
donuts - there is ZERO hash generated on the ham bands with these donuts inline!

[Elecraft] question on KXPD2

2022-03-07 Thread James Cizek
I all,

I recently picked up a KXPD2 knowing I could use it on my existing KX3 and
will work on the KX2 once I receive it.

I am not sure if I am missing something, or there is a manufacturing
problem, or it's just the way it is. Are the paddles supposed to have a
ton of vertical play/slop in them? The screws that come up and down from
the outside into the paddles that act as the bearing points slide around in
the holes like crazy. When you attempt to key you can see them move at 45
degree angles as if the hole they are in is drilled out too big. Is that
normal?

One paddle has about 1/8" vertical movement, the other almost a full 1/4".
It's hard to key quickly on these because they move all over the place.
The strange bearing slop is also causing me to be unable to adjust equal
pressure on the paddles. Since you press one side and they both move, you
cannot get the spring pressure equal since they move a different amount
left and right.

I realize these are "field equipment' and not intended to be a finely tuned
precision device, but the way they move around so drastically makes it
unusable.
Just wondering if this is the way these are designed or if I need to call
Elecraft and ask about it!

Thanks.

[Elecraft] K3 to K4D "Upgrade": Satisfied?

2022-03-04 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Am considering selling my 10 year old K3 (dual receivers, internal tuner), and
P3 and ordering a K4D.

If you’ve gone down that path and have received your K4, how do you like it?
Are you glad you made the “upgrade”? Do you notice any, if at all, difference
in performance? My K3 works fine but I’d like to get a new rig before parts to
repair the K3 become completely unobtainable should something rude happen to
mine.

Regards,

Mike, you confirmed what I had been wondering about.. and it sounds like
the radio will ship without the mic which is just awesome to hear!

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear things are still rolling out the door at
whatever pace they can get the parts in.

Have a great weekend all, and GL in WPX if you are participating!

Thanks all, I must have missed the post from Wayne.

Thank you all for the input, sounds like it's not just mic parts holding
things up, everything is held up. No surprise with the way the world is
today. I work in IT for a living and we are experiencing 8+ MONTH delays
in getting servers/storage now so I think the delays are something we must
all get used to until things recover.

Thanks for the comments. I really didn't want to bug anyone at the factory

[Elecraft] KX2s

2022-02-17 Thread James Cizek
Hi all,

In an effort to satisfy my "kid in a candy store" anxiousness without
calling Elecraft and adding to the probably hundreds of calls they get
saying "Where's my radio", I thought I'd inquire here first :)

A friend and I ordered KX2s mid-December. At the time, the estimated ship
date was 6 weeks. I know that Elecraft is probably having a heck of time
getting parts just like everyone else in the world.

But I noticed that the MH3 mic was out of stock with no estimated ship
date. I wondered if it was the mics holding up the "shack in a box"
deliveries or if the radio parts are still that far behind also.

So, just a general question here, has anyone received a KX2 recently?
Wondering if they are dribbling out of the factory or just plain stuck
waiting for parts!

Only 6 weeks of SOTA winter bonus points left so I am anxious to take my
new toy to the mountains when it arrives :)

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Loss in window line [OPINION] [LONG]

2022-01-14 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Al,

I don’t disagree with you at all, but I do want to make a comment. After having
used coax, “open wire” line, and window line in several locations I think I can
add to the discussion. Many folks have antenna tuners that “remember” the L/C
combination for “segments” of each band they operate on. Those memories are
quite handy when one is moving about the bands - change frequency and the tuner
dutifully sets the L/C combination to match what was used the last time at that
spot.

Unfortunately, there is a big difference in those settings between wet and dry
window line. If you’ve “trained” your tuner for a bazillion segments across
each ham band in dry conditions, you can rest assured that when it is
pouring-ass raining outside those settings go out the window (no pun intended).
It is for that reason that, back at my previous QTH in Northern California, I
removed 110 feet of window line feeder and replaced it with open wire line on
my 88 foot long doublet. I had put the antenna up with window line in the
summer and all was fine - until the rainy season started. After the rains
started I could forget using the stored memories in my various “auto tuners”.

So, yes - window line is OK but be prepared to re “tune” your match when the
window line gets wet. I, for one, will not use the stuff again.

Re: [Elecraft] RFI

2021-12-19 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Same issue here - our CC specifically say no outdoor antennas

However, another thing to consider is to use a flag pole style antenna. I
understand that many states’ laws have provisions that prevent any HOA from
denying the installation of a flag pole in one’s yard. I know for a fact that
my state (Idaho) is one of them. I was initially going to put a PVC jacket
around my 6BTV and make it a flagpole antenna. But after being here for several
months realized that the winds in this high desert environment would have
destroyed it without guy wires. And who has seen flag poles with guy wires? So,
I purchased a Zerofive HOA 24’ Flagpole Vertical, covering 40-6 meters. The HOA
had no problem with it and I’ve been on the air for months with the flagpole.
It even loads up on 80 and 160 meters. Not inexpensive but to me, worth every
penny. There are other commercial ham flagpole verticals on the market. No need
to be limited to indoor antennas if you have a yard to put up a flag pole!

[Elecraft] K2 new kit question

2021-11-08 Thread JAMES GUNNOE
Good morning everyone.
I have finished the basic CW version and all my checks and alignments are good.
The question I do have is, the capacitors (101) tan in color, have the legs
bend in a zigzag pattern. When I tried to straighten them I ended up cracking
the ceramic insulation on them. So I replaced them and installed all of them
without straightening the legs. That of course put them a bit tall on the
board. The manual states to install all components as close to the board as
possible, to avoid stray RF coupling on the board.
Do you all think the way I installed them is going to be an issue? And how
would I be able to tell if it is a issue?

Thank you for all the help I have received so far from this group.

To follow up on my question about the PLL range test, how critical is it to be
at or below 15Khz? Currently I am at 15.40Khz after playing around with the
winding spread. The errata sheet says to be between 9.98Khz and 15Khz
difference in the high and low reading.

happens (and it will but who knows when). My suggestion centered around
determining what is necessary to ensure that we continue to enjoy a semblance
of normalcy when something happens. For instance, if the US were to have a
falling out with China trade wise where would we get the necessary electronics
and other high-tech items essential for our economy to function. Can we
produce these essential items in CONUS?

We had the luxury of a reasonably vibrant manufacturing base prior to our entry
in WWII but it still took time (at the cost of lives) to get production cranked
up to meet the demand.

Just In Time and its corollary concepts brought amazing efficiencies to
global manufacturing for decades and enabled cost reductions that we now
take for granted. I know that first hand ... I was the operations
manager for a large division of a major semiconductor company for many
years. I think it is exceedingly lame to denigrate the entire concept
because a once-in-a century global pandemic brought the world supply
chain to its knees. It's not only JIT adherents that are running out of
parts, and I'd bet that the contractual relationships that major JIT
manufacturers have with their suppliers means that they are going to get
their parts before the ones who don't. Who do you think is going to get
components first ... Elecraft or Hewlett-Packard?

It's crazy how some people try to use an aberration to justify a
reactionary bias.

Unfortunately, the "Just In Time" concept that many US manufacturers have built
their businesses around never considered the "you're never going to get it"
approach that we now see. I hope someone is taking a hard look at our national
resource network because if the balloon goes up, we're going to have a hard
time cranking up the domestic supply chain to meet our basic needs. We
probably won't have the luxury of being able to take our time to get it running.

Subject: [Elecraft] Parts availability

Recently I tried to order some electronic parts for a project I am
working on. In the old days (like, a year ago) I would just get on the
Digi-Key web site, order what I want, and it would arrive in the mail in
a few days.

These days, there are a LOT of parts on the Digi-Key web site that show
no availability. I wanted to buy 10 standard, run-of-the-mill LM358
op-amps in an 8-pin DIP package. This is a 25 cent part that has been
around for decades. They had none in stock in that quantity, from any
manufacturer. I ended up ordering a couple in the old-fashioned TO-5
metal can package for *10 bucks each*. At least they did have some of
those in stock.

I also wanted to buy a ceramic capacitor assortment. They listed 6
assortments that would have worked for me, but all were out of stock.

Manufacturers with "just in time" parts ordering systems are in a world
of hurt these days. Fortunately I don't think Elecraft ever went down
that path.

David -

I’ve played with the VOX Gain to no avail - at zero the rig never transmits,
and at 100 (where it has been sitting) I get the delay. Various settings in
between have no effect. The Delay controls how quickly the rig goes back into
receive mode after speaking. But, thanks for the hints!

[Elecraft] K3 / WSJT-X Delayed Transmit

2021-10-11 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Hi Folks,

Wondering if someone on the list might be able to solve this one. I’m using a
K3 and while CW is my main passion, I do dabble in FT8 occasionally. I’ve
noticed that the radio does not start transmitting right at the start of the 15
second FT8 cycle. It will start anywhere from 2 - 5 seconds into the cycle. I
can’t help but think that is not a good thing and could be the cause of an
occasional missed QSO. I DO make QSOs but this kinda bothers me. The audio
signals are delayed this amount of time, as is the red TX light coming on - I
am using VOX . Same thing happens when I press the TUNE button - it takes
anywhere from 2-5 seconds for the rig to go into transmit mode.

I really doubt it is due to computer overload, as the only applications running
are WSJT-X, MacLoggerDX (my logging program), and JT-Bridge - all other
applications have been ended. Since this happens when I press TUNE, that pretty
much eliminates JT-Bridge and MacLoggerDX as the cause. Some hardware and
software specifics:

Mac mini, 32 GB RAM, 3GHz processor, 6 cores, Intel Core i5.
Mac OS Big Sur 11.5
WSJT-X 2.4.0
Audio Interface: Tascam US-125M external USB device
Values in the DT column are consistently about 0.1 - 0.4

Wasn’t sure if I should post this here or on the WSJT-X list, but I thought I’d
start here. Any ideas?

[Elecraft] P3 Acting Wonky

2021-09-23 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Hope someone can help me out on this one. I just moved into a new home,
relocating my station from CA to ID. Got the K3/P3/KAT500/KPA500 all hooked up.
All was working fine at the previous QTH. Now, the P3 is not showing me any
signals. The “signal level” is below S0. I have an IC-705 that I key up at 10
watts into an inside dipole. It registers 60 over S9 on the K3 meter, but not a
trace of signal showing on the P3. The frequency display on the P3 is spot-on
with what the K3 is set to. If I turn on marker A on the P3 then tap to QSY,
the K3 obeys and follows. That kinda tells me the cabling between the two is
OK.

So, why do I not see any signal at all on the P3? Pilot error? Could be, but
where…?

[Elecraft] FS: Mosley Mini-32-AW 2-El, 5-Band Yagi

2021-09-07 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Moved to Idaho into a HOA/CCR development last month after having ordered this
nice HF yagi. It has a six foot boom, with two elements, max element length is
19.7 feet. It uses two elements on 20, 15, and 10 meters. On 17 and 12 meters
it functions as a rotatable dipole.

The box has been opened, but the antenna items have never been taken out. Comes
in the original Mosley box, with original manual and registration card. New
orders at Mosley take up to three months for shipping, so you can get this five
band yagi NOW!

Local pickup only - I am recovering from a heart attack and have no way to get
it ready for UPS or FedEx pickup.

A new one from the factory will set you back AT LEAST $600 including shipping.
You can have mine for $550. Again, local pickup in the Boise, Idaho area only.

I accept cash or PayPal. Please contact me off list: w6...@mac.com
(I changed my call to K7TXA shortly before moving to
Idaho - changing my email address is nearly as difficult as moving!)

Re: [Elecraft] Ground Wire & Coax

2021-08-23 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Folks - thanks for the input!

Jim - Not sure what version I’ve got - it doesn’t say, so perhaps it is first
edition of the book. However it does have a few paragraphs on perimeter
grounding, on pages 4.22 - 4.24. And yes, I had planned on a series of ground
rods driven in and connected to the #4 wire along its path to the Ufer
connection point.

You mentioned “at least 1.5 - 2x their length" of the ground rod spacing. What
would be the minimum spacing between rods? They are, after all, not the easiest
things to “push” into the ground.

Luckily we’ve got no Telco line coming into the house, nor CATV - it is all
fiber here.

[Elecraft] Ground Wire & Coax

2021-08-23 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Got a question for those folks who are knowledgeable in grounding equipment.

I’m installing a Zerofive flagpole antenna in my backyard. There will be
several 8’ ground rods at the antenna site. On one side of the house is my
shack; on the other side is the home’s utility ground - a Ufer system. I’m also
installing a KF7P entrance panel on the exterior wall of the shack. It’ll have
several lightening arrestors and a very close-by 8’ ground rod. Per N.E.C.
specs, I need to tie the ground system at the shack entrance to the house
utility ground - probably 150’ or so from the coax entrance panel to that Ufer
spot. My electrician said that a #4 solid copper wire running from the coax
entrance panel to the Ufer point would suffice for keeping the grounds
together. Looking at the ARRL book on grounding and bonding, it appears that
what I’m going to do is to install a “perimeter ground.” Not cheap, but the
right thing to do.

Anyway, the path from that coax entrance panel to the antenna is about 100’.
The first 50’ of it is the same path that the #4 copper wire would take. Since
the ground here in SW Idaho doesn’t freeze up, I’m looking at digging a 4-6”
deep trench for these wires. Is there any reason why I cannot place the coax
and the #4 copper wire in the same trench? Electrical reasons? RF reasons?

mistaken, was the supplied plug incorrect or was it something else?

Everyone likes to hear the solution to a mystery!

You are correct, as have been all the others who gave the same information; it
is solved now thanks to all!

Maybe we should close the topic…

Re: [Elecraft] Plug on KPA-1500

2021-08-05 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
David, I was hoping someone from Elecraft would have stepped in to answer your
question.

I assume you are in the USA.

My KPA-1500 came with a 6-20P 240V plug like here:
https://shop.worldcordsets.com/shop/categories/NEMA-620P-Power-Cords . Your
picture did not come through, so if your plug is different, I would contact
Elecraft.

I was not aware that Elecraft has ever meant the amplifier to be operated on
120V, at least from what the specs say. Elecraft would know if your amp was
wired for 120V.

If your plug is similar to the ones on the link, I'm concerned why the
electrician would have said that it was a 120V cord. The 6-20P is definitely a
240V (USA) plug.

If all else fails, ask him to install a 240V 6-20P outlet for you. Again, do
contact Elecraft if your plug is different from the link above.

Subject: [Elecraft] Plug on KPA-1500

I am in a bit of a situation here… in trying to get a 240 V circuit wired for
the shack to fit the plug coming from my KPA1500, the electrician tells me that
it is a 120 V plug, and that is it against the law for him to wire a socket for
that to 240 V.

Here is a photo of the power plug my KPA1500 came with:David F. Reed שָׁלום
