[Elecraft] A K3 on MARS Frequencies
Hello Elecraft List I just got my MARS operating "certificate". I emailed a copy of that to Elecraft Support and received some instructions on how to set the rig up to operate on those frequencies. Despite being told how to do it, the K3 is NEVER seen by the program. I have the K3 set to "USB" RS232, as directed. The Elecraft K3 Utility tool has no difficulty in comms with the rig. If anyone has done this, please email me off-list for any thoughts on the issue. Many thanks. -- 73, KD7YZ Bob EM88LL __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] USB PTT causes strong Speaker Feedback in K3 -- SOLVED
Actually I thought I already replies solved, to this but I see no email came thru. I had, sometime, somehow, either allowed my Rescue Kitten access to the backplane of the K3s's Two Audio-cables, Or just possibly OR I totally fouled up maybe a month or two ago? I have a nice pair of Bose desktop speakers. I noticed one shielded red/white pair of RCA's went to K3 backplane Stereo 'Spkrs" jack. There was another same cable, also off the primary Bose speaker, going to, and plugged into, the backplane Line-Out-Stereo jack on the K3(s). Removed that and the problem was solved. I have no concept of why the cat, or I, would plug the speaker (B port) to the Line-out. -- Best regards, Bob KD7YZ EM88LL __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] USB PTT causes strong Speaker Feedback in K3
Hello K3 List K3 upgraded to K3s. MON = 0 . When I push the PTT on the Icom SM-50 base mic, there is noticeable feedback coming from the station stereo speakers. In the past week I have not reconfigured the CONFIG or MAIN nor added/removed back-end cables. So ..since there IS feedback, I MUST have done something. Hello Gwen Patton: Monday, December 20, 2021, 2:14:29 PM, you chiseled out: > Sounds like a slow-scan TV program, but it's not. You upload the picture to > a server, then send the URL over the air for the other person to click on. Well, it seems it does both , sends (Hybrid) to a server; and sends OTA This morning they were sending; I was rx'ing. I could hear the transmission over the K3. Yet they guided me to a setting to put in the free, and original one, server over the internet. And just now, I tested the length of time it took to send a pict of my 80m NVIS DP at ten feet above ground. Took about 70 seconds. And I know I was sending over the air as the watt-meter was telling me so. So that's weird!. why the program was designed to to both I dunno. But it surely does. Hello Elecraft List I recently got my K3 back from Elecraft. They'd upgraded it to K3s. I used to be able to run a cable from the Rx in out area on the right-upper-rear as I face it. [Elecraft] K3 Audio from RS232 connection?
So today I was reaching behind the K3. The board connector that Is/Was the USB input, came out in my hand. It came off the KiO3b board. When I ran up WSJT-X and was attempting to connect, I noticed No Audio. The 'Commander' IS controlling the K3 and quite well. Just can't do FT8 or MSK144 Meteor-Scatter anymore. [Elecraft] Transverter XV144 way off frequency
My K3 has an external "Leo Bodnar" reference [REF * CAL] . Thus the K3 is accurate for my EME and MSK144/FT8 adventures on 2m. Except: I discovered that the XV144 is not synced with anything. The K3 Menu/Config DOES allow for "XV1 OFS", and knob turning, to set in a "Calibration" value. As I do not have the luxury of a bench of accurate test and calibration equipment, I am unable to get the XV1 to get and remain near to accracy. Some friends told me they "Thought" that the XV144, external Transverter, does have the option for an external GPS REFLOCK as the K3 has. Calls to Elecraft revealed, other than friendly people, that there is no way they know to REFLOCK the XV144 .. [Elecraft] K3: Max out on 6m is 50w
I just tried this into both a 50-ohm dummy load and into an 8 element yagi. The yagi runs separate coax one for Rx and the other for Tx. In testing my previous question about Audio. which was dealing with the internal 6m board, I notice that if I tune the RF Power of the K3 to 100, that the "Bars" RF shows peaks at 50w despite what the RF-Power display claims as I turn the RF-Knob. [Elecraft] Xmit Audio Problem
I suspect I need a different mike than the old heil-pro headset. But then, I better ask first. The symptoms are that is I don't appear have any punch. I use cmp and mic and get the ALC bars in the right places according to the manual. I have adjusted TXG up to 3. Still, when I am transmitting SSB, the output is barely indicating 10% of (A) a HARD whistle pr (B) CW And I have mic at 60 and cmp at 40. What is a "Great" desk mike for the K3? Re: [Elecraft] Need Audio for SignaLink from Sub-Rx on my K3
Well gee ... when I ordered the K3, I got it "loaded" because I correctly figured that eventually (A) I'd need some other non-usual aspect for my weak signal stuff. And (B) that I would eventually figure out how to read thee manual and also understand (eventually) what I just read. That said, I might have just discovered what the installed KXV3 module could be used for. I just plugged the Rx Down-Line into the KXV3 BNC "Rx Ant In". I am now hearing signals from the antenna by selecting K3 front-panel "RX ANT" . I see the waterfall of the JT65 program react to my switching off the mast-mounted LNA. If that's the case, then the SignaLink is also seeing the signal. I however do not know if I have opened another can-of-worms by connecting the Rx line to the KXV3 Rx-In connector. Joel, I don't see a Stereo input on the EMU0404 box. I'd only used it a few days when I once wanted to try receiving a VLF station form Sweden. I guess Stereo wasn't needed. [Elecraft] K3: reduced PWR in Data Mode on 10m only
If I use CW then I get whatever the rig will put out, on 10m. The VSWR shows about 1.3:1 When I switch to Digital then I get about 6w out from 0 to 11w, as indicated when I turn the "PWR" knob. When I turn the PWR knob higher then though it indicates from 11 to 100, the output, as seen on the Elecraft W2, is circa 0 to 1 watt. Until I go to CW, as I said, then the output is correct, the K3 dial shows the correct number of bars and so forth. All other bands work fine on Tx-Data mode. The antenna is not the problem. This does not close PTT anywhere so the Sequencer does bot close the relay on the PA and I can't rune it up. I can push the foot-switch and the relays all close. However, there is no steady RF. In any event, irrespective of the delay( and I set it to 30ms anyway), the K3 sends no signal to the sequencer when the K3 is activated by either the CW key/paddle being tapped, nor by the XMIT/Tune (and or) being pressed. Or at least this is what I am seeing as I try to stop myself from doing as I did moments ago and swipping at the Vibroplex key-paddle, which in turn activated the K3 which was in CW mode. [Elecraft] Can there be a delay before xmit after pressing the XMIT button on my K3?
Howdy K3' people: I use a sequencer which helps ensure that RF does not flow from the K3 before a sensitive LNA is switched out of the RF path. This works if a foot-switch is pressed here. It works when the Tigertronics "SignaLink USB" closes the sequencer's PTT input. However, the K3's "XMIT" button will key the rig and I see no wy to have that action tell the Sequencer that it's internal PTT needs activation. This would need doing prior do RF flowing. If there was a way that a delay could be chosen/set to follow the pressing of XMIT button then I might try using the K3 PTT out or the XV144 Key-Out. I would like to think I will not press the K3 XMIT button but that "ain't gonna happen" as I am likely to use "XMIT" with a reduced output to tune an external 2m PA . Or, sometimes I am just stupid and press XMIT anyway ... wouldn't be nice to destroy an expensive LNA . especially in the middle of a QSO with a severely weak station. -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I set the SDR-Radio console QRG to this new IF and somewhere around 6.499.094 I get a -80dbm CW ID of WZ8D. I could not find same beacon in the IF when the SDR-Radio QRG was set to rad the SDR-IQ box at 8.215 so what's the real IF of my K3 when the K3-Util command FI; returns 6550? -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

On the KAT500 I can press 'TUNE' then tap K3 "XMIT" and the KAT500 will usually settle on or about 1.1:1 . Then when I .run a WSJT, Data, QSO, if the KAT500 is left in "AUTO", re-tuning will often take occupy 10 or more seconds of the time before the KAT500 finds a place it likes. Often the SWR is then in the RED or worse, FAULT. Not very often on FAULT however. Mostly what I see are SWR's around 2:1 . (KAT500 in AUTO . If I put KAT500 in BYP, the K3 often shows SWR's of 2 to 3. If left in AUTO, the mismatch is apparent in received audio. Without the KAT500, the antenna itself exhibits a 1.3 SWR consistently . The constant re-tuning or irregular attenuation due to mismatch form KAT500 is annoying. I pulled the cable from rotor (COM1) and stuck it on the K3 ... thus straight to the RS232 port, DB9 on the back of the PC .. works fine and I'll be able to make the EME sked! Now to try and find out why the K3 would not see, or be seen by, the USB/COM port as it has for 6 months. Was quite a shock. The XV432 transverter works quite famously in JT65 mode for long periods of time on EME skeds when the QSO doesn't go in ten minutes. Have had it up to an hour and the xv432 is still solid. The watt meter tells me what the output it. The LED's, well, still goofy and generally just eye-wash for accuracy measured over time. 73 -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 doesn't see COM Port on PC anymore
Howdy K3' people: Admittedly I've goofed. That said, I have an EME QSO tomorrow morning and I can't get a program like 'Commander' to see that the K3 is on COM3. I'd been fiddling around trying to find a way to make three programs lok at the K3 and still keep Commander working. Last used or tried was VSPmgr. Then Com0Com Anyway, I used windows dev mgr and view hidden ports, got rid of all the myriad which were the virtual ports. Left is Com1. I reboot the Win7-64 bit machine, see that the Gigaware RS232 to USB gets named COM3. Next to verify it's connected to the K3, I unplugged the cable from the PC. Plugged it back in and it gets installed as COM4. Settings show RS232 38400 as does the Dev-Mgr COM4 38400, 8N1 Still, the K3 Utility nor Commander will see that the K3 is connected. Can anyone please help? This situation I have never seen, and despite re-installing the com-port, there are no errors from K3, just the continual searching for any handshake on whichever port I'd used. -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

On Tuesday Wilhelm used a Straight-Key to send: -Original Comment--- > Push either knob and the LEDs will change to HiCut and LoCut. Exactly! Unfortunately, I did not write correctly. I wanted to make "FC" move. I also then wanted to push in and get LO HI" led's active. Could not do that. Could not change the shift and I was having a heck of a time copying the YV5 at times. K6ja wrote and told me to look at Config"CW:QRQ and make sure it was Off. Bingo!! that was the problem. Dunno how or why I would have changed it in the last day, or even in the last hours actually. I was probably pushing buttons, twisting knobs, in the excitement of working a Sporadic-E opening on 6m I done it, don't beat me. [Elecraft] Help with missing Filter-Control "Shift"
Howdy K3' people: There's a 6m opening to South America right now. The most I am working aere CW in the Brazil and Venezuzla region. CW. I've been making great use of the filters, my 8-pole matching, and so forth. Suddenly I have no control of the upper-left knob. No Shift. No "Lo". If I push it in, the beep goes butI see FC*060 usually I could shift the filter response drawing back and forth. If I hold it in, I get but still no control Somehow I also can get a QRQ off or QRG off .. dunno, can't make it happen every time . may not be related. Mainly, pushing upper-left knob makes the green LED go from Shift to"LO" and the width LED to "HI" -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3: TX-INH help please
Howdy K3' people: I am a dummy as I can not quite figure this one out. I hav a 2m LNA, the SSB-MHP-145, which MUST be switched out before any RF. The LNA does not have RF sensing. I use an SSB-ACS-2004 and an SSB-DCW-2004b, the latter of which runs the necessary 12v to the MHP-145 when the DCW-2004 is keyed/grounded on Pin-3. So I would like to make use of the K# and TX-Inhibit that I have heard so many mention. However, page 11 of the K3 tells me that pin-7 of the Daisy-Chain from K3 to the transverters can activate TX-Inhibit if Pin-7 is grounded. To me, that's not a Toggle, it's a steady state until Pin-7 is released. So all the time I am receiving/listening, TX-H must be activated. The DCW-2004 does not apply output to one of four pins until the DCW-2004b is keyed by ... something, a foot-switch; a PTT output from the K3, or something. I therefore erroneously conclude that nothing is holding TX-INH active until the DCW-2004 sequencer is itself keyed. Therefore I have to ask anyone using TX-INH to guide me through this confusing process. Kinda specialized, however I hope somebody is using it like I wish to do. thanks in advance -- 73 KD7YZ Bob http://www.qrz.com/db/KD7YZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: Use VFO-B to select dBV
Howdy K3' people: According to the Manual, Page 36, I can use VFO-B display to see dBV after AFV settles down. I see the RMS voltage reading but I never get to see the equivalent dBV. So I rotated through the variables available, by turning the VFO-B knob, everything else is the but no dBV. And the reason I want to see this is because I just received my new XG3 Signal Source. In it they mention a way to see dBV on the K3 . -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3: ERR TXG now
Howdy K3' people: This time I see ERR TXG while trying to xmit CW on transverter xv50. So I was wondering, am I asking too much from my setup? I want EME on 144 and 432, as I told Elecraft when I was laying it all out to buy over the phone. Does anyone use a K3 with XV50, XV144, XV432, KXREF with external GPS, tcxo's 8-pole matched filters, KAT500, and so forth ?/ Anyone. Because I can not get the three xvters to work together. One at a time xv432 and xv50. But xv432 won't put out more than 7 watts here .. at my place. XV144 won't put out unless I use an inline mini-circuits lowpass filter. Then it only gets 15w out. Here .. in my kludgy setup. XV144 & xv50 together in the daisy chain? XV50 won't put out over a half watt. If I use the low-pass then xv50 puts out 30, if you want it, but I run it a lot less. But then, with the low-pass inline, in the daisy chain, the XV144 won't put anything out. The xv144 somebody told my you simply must use a preamp. I believe that as I have trouble hearing a friend with 800 watts and 4 15 element 144mHz yagis at 160 miles from me.I am using two 15 element yagis at 50 feet on a ridge. So what do ya think out there? Have I just put too many add-ons to the K3 to make any of it work reliably? Todays Critical Error messages twice with ERR DSE and once ERR TXG. I did the Utility download and firmware update. I watched it go thru it. [Elecraft] K3: remove birdies on a transverter band?
Howdy K3' people: Don was telling me about removing birdies when I mentioned they seemed all over my three transverters. The manual says go to the IF, in this case 28mHz. Well gee ... I don't hear them on 28 megs so I wouldn't be removing anything if I tuned there and said 'remove birdies". Any of you guys see plethora birdies down around 432.0 ->432.15 and/of 144.0 ->144.2 ?? I was going to try that, if it works, before locating the sources of this monsters. Most seem to not go away if I remove the antenna. Some seem to get loud if I move cables. I could run the rig on a large 12v battery and switch the mains off if I wanted to reset all the microwave and clocks .. and if I remembered to disable the 10k generator that kicks in 30 seconds after a power failure. Not much in the way of businesses to generate stuff out here; nearest house about 3/4 mile but not line-of sight through the hills. -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
