[Elecraft] Last Click Serial Port
Since I have incurred a situation at lest 3 times on my K3S, since it might help someone I thought I would share some info. On occasion I need to un-cable the K3S when working an something and like a fool thinking when I put it all back together it is going to work first time. I do have everything labeled so I do get everything into the right connector. The problem I have had to arise several times, once everything is ready to check the, the RS232 serial port will not communicate. After a lot of work each time it has turned out to be that the RJ45 connector for the RS232 jack, even though what appeared to be fully plugged in, pushing on it there would be a faint “click” signifying it is truly fully seated. From where I thought I had it fully plugged in to actually being full could not have been a 64th of an inch if that. Not even sure if there is any further travel I just hear the faint click. So if you use the RJ45, even though the RJ45 appears to be in fully, if you have com port communication problems to your computer or cant talk to your P3, see if you hear that faint “last click” in the RJ45. It is not just my particular K3S, I have seen the same situation on a second one. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] USB RTS
I have had my K3S about 6 months and working with WSJT and DX Lab have used it with serial data for radio control plus RTS PTT with USB audio. I have tried several times to convert to just USB alone but I am always stymied when choosing RTS for PTT. I can use USB for Data and Audio fine but it is when trying to choose RTS is where the problem arises. The radio goes into transmit when RTS is selected as PTT. I can select DTR for PTT and everything works good but normally by convention DTR is used in keying on CW. I have gone through the USB.SAFE and UNSAFE variations. I disconnected all data cables, USB, RS232 and ACC Plug and still when I select RTS for PTT the radio goes into transmit. I have tried that with SAFE and USB.SAFE set. Again DTR for PTT works fine. All revisions are loaded and USB is selected under RS232 setting. Any suggestions. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] NB IF NAR/CODEC
I have 2 K3 and a K3S and for some time I have noticed all 3 doing something that seems incorrect. All the radios are all up to correct Rev levels. For years with my normal local noise, I always ran the NB at IF Nar 1-4 most all the time with good success. In recent months, maybe more, on Nar only when I get up to NAR 1-4 to 1-7 more noise than what I am trying to remove appears ie with no NB and S4 with some minor local line noise, at NB Nar 1-7 the noise is S6 or more. I don’t see that on any Med and Wide. I don’t see any difference in what band I am on but on the higher bands I have PRE 1 on with AGC Fast or Slow. Any input from others that might have seen this is appreciated. I know in past years this did not occur and I have been lax in asking the question. I actually checked at another QTH with only S2 on the meter and got the same results. I see I received some criticism in regard the question on CODEC. Someone said ask “what did I do last”. Well the time program was set to 1 sec maybe 6 months before I used the program that indicated there was some sort of problem and it was noticed as soon as I started using the K3S. I was only looking for some input and not blaming the K3S but since it was in the equation with the computer I had to ask. Receiving input like that I think make some not want to even ask any legitimate questions on the forum. [Elecraft] CODEC
As previously posted the problem had nothing to do with CODEC or the K3S. Problem turned out to be the time update of the computer by Dimension 4. I had it set for updates every 1 sec as I didn’t think that was a problem. I now have it set for 30 Mins and probably and hour would not hurt anything as every 15 secs it does about .049 correction on my computer. I don’t think it is abnormal for the Rates on WSJT-10 to jump out of range when a time update is done to the computer. Something you cant see on WSJT-X or JTDX. Thanks to all that wrote with suggestions, all of them good. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] CODEC UPDATE & CLOSE
Well the good news is that the K3S has nothing to do with my Rate In/Out numbers jumping out of range. The reason I say that is I was watching the WSJT-10 program with the K3S powered off and the were still jumping out of range. When seeing that I decided to check the analog audio again and couldnt believe it is jumping also. Something has gone off the rails in the computer arena. I disconnected everything from the machine today and found that anytime I have the Ethernet cable to the computer from the Xfinity router/modem connected the Rates start jumping randomly and sometimes out of range. I changed the ethernet cable but not help. Just for drill I put some torrids on each end with no change. I am thinking of seeing if Xfinity will swap out the router/modem. The numbers do not necessarily jump when there is traffic on the ethernet rx or tx so not sure how that is causing the audio Rates to jump. I have no other clues right now but guess this case can be closed on the Elecraft reflector as this has nothing to do with the K3S. Thanks to all those that emailed me.. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] CODEC
I have used for years a K3 on EME with WSJT using Line In/Out audio. Recently got a K3S and I am now using USB (CODEC) audio in and out of the radio. In WSJT-10 they have Rate In/Rate Out monitors that should normally run at 1.000. Using the K3 analog audio these always stayed right on 1.000 but now that I am using the USB audio they are jumping around quite often and getting out of range indicated in WSJT with a red marker. I have tried two different computers and the same result. I tried changing the sample rate in the computer audio settings but no change in the problem. I plan to go back to analog Line In/Out on the K3S unless someone has an idea on how to settle down the Rate In/Out fluctuations. I have not found anything in the K3S that might affect this. [Elecraft] P3 Noise
I was doing some power line noise tracking with my AM VHF radio and brought it into the shack and laid it on the desk with no antenna and started receiving a loud buzz from it. The tracker radio was tuned in the 135 Mhz area. I moved it around to all the suspects like computer monitors, TV, computer etc but it turned out the noise was coming from the P3. I took all the cables off the P3 and used a battery to power it and the noise was still there very loud. I am always working to keep the RF noise low from all the items in the shack so not sure what to do about this one. The This P3 was factory assembled. I have had a set for over a year with no problems. I would have never bought a set but once I felt the difference on one actually mounted on a K3 at Dayton I had to have one. I bought a second set this year. I’ll never go back to the originals. They just have a dead feel. Something hard to explain as it is like driving a car. Some you love, some not so much.. Only thing I would like to see is a rubber tire on it like the Yaesu tuning know. I talked with 73CNC about it and they are open to the idea but the set up cost versus the number he might set is a gamble as to whether they would recoup their expense. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

In regard to dipping the knobs, that would only make a slick rubber surface. All the radios that have the rubber tire have a hatch work pattern in the tire for grip. Greg, I spoke too soon.. I see that the Headset Buddy has one option like the Ant Lion for any headset with the magnet, but I now see they have one specifically for the QC15 with the mic and headphone cord all in one. I really like that as I had to lace the mic cord to the headset cord which works okay but the one Headset Buddy has is more elegant for sure. I may have to think about it. Anything much more than .40 during a contest and you miss the first or second letter of many returning callers. Speed increase is a solution but not what is needed. Sending 24 WPM it doesn’t drop at .40 delay, but at 23 WPM it does drop. There are some occasions where I might like to use the memory below 23. It would sure save the TR relay in the amp a lot of work as instead of two transitions there are multiple. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] APF and Pitch
I use 350 hz pitch and with a decent signal the APF works okay although its not really needed under those conditions. When the signal is very very weak it is hard for me to tell when the stations stops sending, ie the ring from noise burst sounds the same as the station transmitting. For that reason it is very annoying. I have spent time on 160 trying to copy something with APF that I cant without but cant find where it really helps. It does sound neat when you turn it on and peak up signals and maybe if there were no noise burst at all it might be more useful. I use dual QF-1A audio filters for stereo while has more control for me being able to control each ear separately. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Has anyone used a PC microphone?
I know the thread was originally on the KX3 but wanted to send out info on a mic that will attach to any headset and works great on my K3. I used for years the Heil HC4 DXer Dream element for chasing DX and wanted something just as good. I had been using a Bose QC15 noise cancelling headset and really enjoy it but kept looking for a way to attach a mic. Look at this site http://www.modmic.com/ It can be removed if needed and it has real punch once the equalizer is set up. I really cuts through the pileups and got the cord from my old desk mic off the table. I now keep the headset and mic plugged into the rear all the time. I use an external speaker that has an off switch that puts the speaker line to 4 ohms when in the off position. I selected in the K3 menu for the speaker and headset to be enabled all the time so I only have to turn the switch on the headset on to listen via the Bose on flip the switch on the speaker to use it, so no more plugging and unplugging of headsets along with all the cabling off the table for mics and headset. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] spikes that never move
I fought the same problem Dave W8FGU had and also tracked it to the cables for the P3. The connectors on the cable were inferior to Amphenol’s in that there was no tension in the connector when seating them and thus there was eventually a poor connection to the shield. Whenever the problem would occur I could reseat both connectors and the problem, stationary images, would clear. I tried replacing the cable with one of the same types received with the P3 but it also had the same problem. When pushing some true Amphenols on that I had here provided a lot of tension when pushing them on. 73 Mike __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 - N1MM/MMTTY/FSK/CW Interface/Procedure for
I use a board sold by W3YY for interfacing RTTY/PTT/CW. I also built into the box housing a 12 V fan out for P3/PR6 and AUX and plug the main into the K3 12 V ACC. Also D connector for the PR6 connection and another D connector for band out data to a DX Eng antenna switch. Made a nice package and makes jumping modes quick CW/RTTY/PSK/ quick. I am really pleased with the W3YY board using optical isolators. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] RX ANT PORT
Has anyone done a check on the input impedance of the receive antenna port? My crude check showed around 33 ohms. Just curious. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] BAND CODE OUTPUT CHANGE
Without going into a long story why I need this, is there anyway to change the band decode outputs? Just need to change 6 M to 60 M decode. Probably not possible by firmware but thought I would ask. I can do it externally but it would make things easier to have the K3 send the code I want. 73 Mike k4pi __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] XMIT EQUALIZTION
I bought a new mic and decided to set it up using equalization for “pile up” mode. I had always ran equalization at 0 across the board previously. Everything went well until this morning I switched over to PSK31 with the audio coming in on LINE IN. I kept having issues with being able to set the power level and then I noticed that on the low end of the PSK spectrum I had hardly any power at all but in the mid to high end things were fine. Then it hit me, it was following the equalization pattern I had set up for the mic. I see that there is a second equalization pattern for FM, ESSB and AM unfortunately which will not help me in this case as I assume it only come in when you have those modes selected. Wonder if there is any chance of getting a second pattern in the SSB mode? I am sure some guys would like to have a rag chew mode and a DX mode. I need one for PSK and one for DX. It is troublesome to have to dial out all of the equalization everytime I want to do PSK. Any suggestions as I might be missing something. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] DISREGARD XMIT EQUALIZATION
Lyle KK7P informed me about the DATA A option. That should take care of my problem on PSK31. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 FREQ RIGFILE
I quite often use a spot on my packet spots to just change band/modes. Often there is nothing in the spot window to get me to the band mode I desired so I was wondering if there is some way to create a small screen with several freq/mode selections for each band so I could just one click to any band/mode desired. 73 Mike __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 DX4WIN
I would like to converse off board in regard problem I am having when selecting spots via DX4WIN that have splits. Both VFO’s get the freq but the second VFO does not get the mode and Split is not enabled. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] HEAVY KNOBS??
I admit I would never have bought one until I tried one on demo at Dayton. It is night and day to me. Pricey yes but for me I will pay it.. Had a K3 with the CNC knob not been there to feel I would have never bought one. You cannot adjust the felt tension on the original K3 knob to get the feel of the heavier knob on the main VFO. I opted for the rotating spinner and I really like the feel. Each to his own. It is like the feel of a CW paddle. The heavier 2nd VFO knob did not make all that much difference. I found a knob just a shade bigger than the present 2nd VFO knob with a rotating spinner, and I plan to fill it with lead. I actually put the main VFO on the 2nd and it works but crowds things a little. If anyone wants to see pix of both let me know. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] XG3 KEYING
Just got a XG3 and loving it. Of course I had to try every function out. Memories work well for beacon CW/RTTY. Friends 26 miles away copied it S6 on the 0 Dbm level on 6 meters, of course our antennas are good. A friend several hundred miles away copied me on 40 meters so I am getting hooked on QRPP. Or whatever 1 Milliwatt is. Only function I cannot get to work is the “Configure PF1 so send Morse” Pg 13 in the supplied manual. The one online seems to be out of date. I called Elecraft and left a message but it was probably getting late on Friday afternoon there. Anyone tried this function? Just need a way for a key to plug in HI. Wonder if supplying and unsupplying the antenna at a Morse rate would damage something in the output stage? Trying to use it for everything except what it was intended for.HI. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Second Antenna Port
I have asked Elecraft several time about giving the option of a second antenna port without having to buy an antenna tuner but so far nothing. I have had a FT1000MP for over 15 years and never used the internal tuner so don’t see me needing one in the K3. The hole is already there for the connector so just need a mod on the ANT Relay board. I know I could put an outboard switch on the outside but I would like to put 6 M on one of the ports and with the outboard switch that make 2 extra connectors in the line. Having the antenna switch inside the radio is a lot more elegant and efficient. Having to pay for the antenna tuner just to get a second port goes against my miserly grain. Having the 2 ports without having to buy the antenna tuner would be a nice selling point for Elecraft I would think. Wonder if anyone has ever tried to install the second antenna port by mod’ing the antenna relay board? I have my asbestos suit on. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Elecraft FTDI N1MM
I noticed that Elecraft if now offering a FTDI cable. When I bought my K3 they only had a Prolific cable. It works fine for downloading Elecraft updates but have never been able to get it working on N1MM. Wonder if anyone has used the FTDI cable offered by Elecraft to control their K3 via N1MM? Everything I read points toward using FTDI type cables with the K3/N1MM combo. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 VOLUME POT
Anyone else having volume control issues? I had the original replaced last year when the DSP mod was done and it lasted a few months and went back to the same problem as the original where when you try to turn the volume down, the volume goes to full when you get near the full CCW area. If I press inward on the pot and hold that pressure as I turn it up and down it appears okay so the wiper must be loosing it’s tension on the lower end. If I replace it again and it is only going to last a few months there is not much need in doing that. Anyone tried a different brand pot? This pot does not get used that much so strange it has such a short life span. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
