Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility
I just installed the latest version of the KX3 Utility from Elecraft. The only glitch was when Windows Defender tried to protect me from bad people, but I knew Elecraft wasn't bad people, so overrode the warning. All went well otherwise. david KC1DNY On 7/26/2023 3:24 PM, Dave wrote: Is there a problem with the KX3 Utility? The magic computer tech fixed it. Thanks for the help. Unplugged the cable and turned all off then turned on and connected cable again and it worked. Thanks to all that replied. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Terminal window for CW
Fred says "Optionally, you can use the KX3 Utility to monitor an extended display of characters sent from the KX3's keyer." I assume "keyer" could refer to the paddle connected to the KX3. I can type characters into the Utility Terminal lower window and Transmit the CW. The characters sent are displayed in the top window. david KC1DNY On 12/31/2019 7:48 PM, Ingo Meyer, DK3RED wrote: Hello David, I'm enjoying and getting a lot out of our CW discussion. I've tried to use the KX3 uUtility for practice sending CW. p. 60 of Fred Cady's big, excellent Elecraft KX-Line book says I shouldbe able to use the Terminal window of the Utility to display the text of the CW I'm sending, but I've never been able to get it to work. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility problem: serial port is closed
Okay…some weirdness, but I can get the software to work. Here is what I have done (some help from you guys, some help from the IT guys where I work, and the internet). It’s a little complex… Configuration 1: My laptop is connected via USB to a PK-232SC+ which has a 2 port USB hub built in – my KXUSB is plugged in there. Under this configuration, no joy with the KX3 Utility recognizing the COM port. Configuration 2: My laptop is connected to the KX3 directly via USB port. Under this configuration, no joy with the KX3 Utility recognizing the COM port. Configuration 3: My laptop is connected to the KX3 directly via USB port. Under COM port settings for the KX3USB connected port, I changed the latency timer to 8 ms from 16 ms. Under this configuration, the KX3 Utility recognizes the COM port every time. Returning to configuration one with the lower latency timer setting does not allow the KX3 utility to see the com port, so no joy there. BUT – it’s a weird BUT – If I connect the KXUSB directly to the laptop, open the utility and connect, disconnect the KX3USB from the laptop and connect it to the hub built in to the PK-232sc+, it works as long as I don’t exit the KX3 utility software. I can even close the serial port in the software, BUT as long as I don’t exit the software, I can reopen the serial port and it works fine. I can close the port and use other software that needs the KXUSB as long as I don’t exit the KX3 utility program (just leave it minimized) it works when I need it. How crazy is that? Any gurus figure that one out?? Hi, Sometimes driver software can be a pain... Try this. 1) Open the device manager and select the comport by right clicking on it. 2) Check the box to delete the driver software and uninstall. 3) Unplug the USB cable. 4) Reboot 5) Next run the FTDI driver installation. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility problem: serial port is closed
Hank,I had a similar problem earlier this week following a Windows update. The COM port showed up in Device Manager, but the software package I was using (not the KX3 Utility) couldn't talk to it. Within a day or so, there was another Windows update, and then everything worked fine.Sometimes it seems like an update breaks something, and a follow on update fixes it. Oh, yes, power cycle the KX3 too, but that will not likely make a difference. After rebooting the computer, look in Device Manager to see which COM port your computer assigned to the KXUSB adapter, and use that COM port in all your applications as well as KX3 Utility. Windows sometimes changes the COM port (in its infinite wisdom) for you. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/12/2019 7:47 PM, HB wrote: > Hey folks… > I have an unusual (I think) problem. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility problem: serial port is closed
Hank, Re-boot the computer - it seems all the problems are in your computer. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/12/2019 7:47 PM, HB wrote: Hey folks… I have an unusual (I think) problem. I just had this problem today after "upgrading" to Windows 10 Ver 1809. Windows told me the COM port was closed, even though it showed up in device manager. A reboot fixed it. Apple has a tradition of announcing the next release of Operating Systems (eg. macOS, iOS, WatchOS. tvOS, etc.) at the annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) that takes place in June. This year’s event is scheduled for 3-7 Jun 19 in San Jose. Traditionally, WWDC is an opportunity for announcing upcoming product releases for both software and hardware products. Typically, software announcements made in June are not actually released until late September or early October. This has been the case for a number of years. Consequently, while Apple has already made it clear (back in 2017) to software developers that the 2019 release of macOS (v10.15) will not support 32-bit applications (in the hope that the ‘heads up’ will prompt them to update their software), little else has been revealed about what enhancements/improvements will be incorporated into the 2019 release of macOS. These new features/enhancements will likely be touted at the next WWDC. In any event, don’t expect ’the next version of macOS (e.g. v10.15) to be available until the Fall, though security and other incremental updates to the current version (macOS 10.14.x) will likely take place before the next major release. This week Apple released incremental updates for MacOS (v10.14.4). iOS (v12.2), watchOS (v5.2) and tvOS (v12.2). Hopefully, the next six months before actual OS Product release will give time to developers to update their software. That said, it is also true that developers may decide NOT to update their software for whatever reason (cost, changing marketplace, gone out-of-business, other priorities, etc.). iOS went through a similar OS update in 2016 when iOS v11 was released removing 32-bit app support. Apple announced in October 2014 that iOS would no longer 32-bit apps in future iOS versions. A number of iOS apps I was using were no longer usable with v11.x and the developers did not release a 64-bit version. Fortunately, I had moved my data from those apps because iOS v10.3 that came out in January 2017 had provided a ‘heads up’ that apps that I had would not work with the next update. That gave me time to make a less frantic transition before iOS v11.0 (64-bit apps only) was released in Fall 2017. Of course, consumers are not required to update whatever macOS is applicable to their products if favorite software will not work with the an OS update. It is also true that as products get older they may no longer be eligible for OS updates anyway. I’m running macOS v10.13.6 on my 2010 MacPro instead of macOS 10.14.x because the video card is not capable of handling ‘dark mode’ that is part of macOS v10.14.x and there isn’t a current generation after-market video card suitable for my MacPro that retains full Mac Video functionality. There are video cards out there that can be physically installed, but they don’t have Mac drivers native to them. Of course, Windows users are not necessarily out-of-the-woods when it comes to OS changes. With the ‘end of life’ for Windows 7 in January 2020, many individuals who have this OS (including yours truly) will need to decide next steps regarding their trusty PCs or virtual machines still running this software. I saw one estimate that 40% of currently active PCs are running Win7. Whereas Apple provides OS updates/upgrades for free, Microsoft is not as generous. Those that have Win 7 PCs or VMs that are capable of running Win10 will need to decide whether to invest the $139.00 to download an upgrade to Win10 or perhaps convert to Windows 8 (support lasts to 10 JAN 23). Those with PCs that are not compatible with a newer OS will have to determine whether to invest in newer hardware.. One alternative to not upgrading is to pay a monthly subscriber fee (that will increase each year; specific pricing to be announced) to continue to receive Win 7 security updates starting in Januay for up to three years . Of course, converting to Win10 also encompasses a ‘learning curve’ given that Microsoft decided to update the ‘look and feel’ (for whatever reason) such that someone familiar with Win7 has to learn how Win10 is organized/functions. I ended up putting a Win7 “Classic Shell” on a Dell laptop running Win10 so that i didn’t have to be ‘reprogrammed’ in order to manage/utilize it. Given that Apple has not altered the ‘essentials’ of using macOS as annual upgrades are released (for free), my preference will continue to be Apple, recognizing that for certain functions, Windows OS is necessary. “Aging Obsolescence” is a continuing challenge with electronics that continues to function but no longer meets current technical ‘expectations.’ FWIW, Barry
Re: [Elecraft] Macintosh version of Elecraft KX3 Utility
In addition to Elecraft's Mac software, I have expensive apps that will not work under the next Mac OS. They work for me fine now and I don't want to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade to new versions of those apps just so they will work under the next Mac OS. I don't need no stinkin' new version of Mac OS, so I will stick with the current version and have disabled the "automatically keep my Mac up to date" function so that a new OS isn't installed behind my back. Re: [Elecraft] Macintosh version of Elecraft KX3 Utility
Unless you are a developer, weeks is measured in double digits. The new version of macOS will presumably be announced at Apple’s WWDC in San Jose the first week of June. It will not be out as a full release until September or October which is the real time frame of concern. Unless you value your data, do not run any of the betas unless you really need to, and then only with data you are willing to lose. As a long-time Macintosh developer I speak from extensive experience here. I am sure the Elecraft Utilities will be updated in time for this event as needed. After all, until Apple tells us what is going on, we don’t really know anything, right? By the way, there are some far more important issues that we are watching, such as the very mysterious notarization system and when it might be required. 73, Jack, W6FB > On Mar 29, 2019, at 3:56 PM, Andy McMullin via Elecraft > wrote: > > I’m sorry Keith but is there any evidence to support that assertion. Since the memory manager seems to be tied to Windows, should we contribute to Chirp support for Elecraft? It already supports some Kenwood rigs, so if the Elecraft memory command set is similar to Kenwood, that might not be too hard. The request has been on the Chirp board since 2012, so it probably takes an interested volunteer. https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/248 wunder Walter Underwood wun...@wunderwood.org http://observer.wunderwood.org/ (my blog) > On Mar 27, 2019, at 1:31 PM, Andy McMullin wrote: > > Excellent. Re: [Elecraft] Macintosh version of Elecraft KX3 Utility
No, you are not the only person who uses a Mac with their Elecraft equipment and macOS utilities. Elecraft is aware of the 32 bit limitation, and so is the developer of the KX3 app for macOS. I expect 64 bit versions of all Elecraft utilities will be released before the general release of the next OS, assuming the pre-release developer versions have 32 bit support removed. 73, Charles, K4ZRJ > On Mar 27, 2019, at 2:10 PM, Andy McMullin wrote: > > Thanks Charles. > > So, am I the only person interested in using my Elecraft kit with a Mac in > the future? Unless Apple changes its position on 32 bit software like the KX3 Utility, 32 bit apps will not run on the next major release of macOS. The warning message is just that - a warning message that the app in question will not run on future version of the OS. The warning messages appears at random times, but is still valid. Re: [Elecraft] Macintosh version of Elecraft KX3 Utility
The warning message does not merely appear just once with the first launch of the software but on subsequent lauches as well (after shutdown of the app). However, I have noticed that if a subsequent launch is within a small period of time after an earlier launch where the message was shown, then the message does not appear again. However, after a longer period of time, the message on launch will appear again. Now, definitions for "small period of time" and "longer period of time" would be your own assessment because I have found that it is different intervals depending what I guess to be arbitrary (or, unknown to me). > On Mar 27, 2019, at 9:43 AM, Andy McMullin wrote: > > It might go away, but is it still valid? The present KX3 Utility and PX3 Utility are 32-bit apps on Apple’s OSX platform. Does anyone know if Elecraft plans to update these to 64-bit anytime soon? [Elecraft] KX3-Utility worked in May but not now.
Hello, As the subject-line states, my records show that all was good this past May when I checked if I was up-to-date firmware-wise. Also, in September, for the power-up sequence, I successfully used the Utility to put in a banner with my call-sign. The idea today was to get DX-Lab and its WinWarbler connected to the KX3. I had read that the KX3's CW-decoding could be displayed in WinWarbler. But now, I have an issue and I'm not even out of the starting-gate. The Utility's tab "Firmware" shows that wheels are spinning in "Attempting to connect KX3 on port COM3 at " using various bit/s speeds. The KX3 is set at 4800 bits/s. So, I used Win10's trouble-shooting and got this message: The error I get is "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM8) has a driver problem." I'm mystified that I see COM3 in one place and COM8 in another. I have no idea what to do next. I was horrified to read that I had a Prolific USB adapter; so much bad press about Prolific. TIA for any help. 73 Jerry KM3K __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Utility error on Mac OS X High Sierra
Hi Christer, You want the FTDI VCP Drivers, not the D2XX. As Jack mentioned, the FTDI drivers are now provided by Apple and are included in all versions since OS X 10.9. You should uninstall the D2XX drivers. Also try deleting the KX3 Utility app, and it's preferences file, and download again from the Elecraft web site and reinstall. The preferences file is located in the /Users/your_user_name/Library/Preferences folder on the Mac. The Library folder is usually hidden. A quick way to get there is to click the "Go" menu in Finder and press the "option" key. The Library folder will then appear in the Go menu. The KX3 Utility preferences file is named "KX3UtilPrefs". Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Utility error on Mac OS X High Sierra
Chris; The FTDI drivers are now maintained by Apple (since Mac OS X 10.9), so there is no need for installing the ones from FTDI. In fact you probably should uninstall them to allow the Apple drivers to do their job. But this isn’t an I/O issue. This looks like there is a corrupt file the application is trying, but failing to read. There should be a crash dump that was created when the program crashed. Open the Console app (in /Applications/Utilities) and look in the various directories it shows for an appropriately named crash log. That should tell us a lot more. One question - did you try to copy a file from a Windows machine into the Mac for this application? Perhaps David (the app author) might want to jump in here as well. He might have a much better feel for why we are seeing these errors. 73! Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Utility error on Mac OS X High Sierra
Christer, I don't know about the D2XX drivers. You need to have the FTDI drivers. You can download them from https://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm. The first step is to get your computer to enumerate the COM port associated with the USB to serial adapter. Having that number, put it into the KX3 Utility PORT tab and Test Communications. Once the utility connects, everything else should go smoothly. A rhetorical question - Why have I seen this problem recently from Mac users? Perhaps the Mac software is no longer using the proper drivers for the FTDI adapter. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/14/2018 10:40 AM, Christer Palm via Elecraft wrote: Hi! Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version
Don't let a few idiots put you off Linux. Look into the linux...@groups.io mailing list (the home of Fldigi etc) Lots of GOOD help on there, by many who remember our initial frustration with it all. (Some Elecraft users there too.) As to one OS vs another. Linux is different, that is all. Do any of you remember when you first started using Windows or Mac*? I'll bet that was just as frustrating and confusing then, as if you expect to "just jump in, and survive" with Linux (or BSD, or MacOS) these days. (* Has to be said, that back in the Steve Jobs days, the UI was truly a work of art, you didn't need instructions. Since his sad demise, it's all gone a bit Pete Tong.) As others have said, it is possible to have a PC that will boot it's original OS (Windows or Mac) or one or more versions of Linux (or any other OS) so you can choose at boot time what you want. Yes, there are several well known Ham Radio programs that have no "Direct equivalent" Linux version, but there is other equaly good software native to Linux that will do the same job. Mostly. There are also some that have no equivalent, or even anything close (sadly.) Some of them will run under WINE, some wont. But, unless you use them all the time every day, you won't need them most of the time. (Thinking here of Motorola DMR programming software as an example.) In such cases, just boot into Windows, get that job done, then if needed reboot back into Linux (or whatever) and carry on. If you want to just get your toes wet, without risk of corrupting or bricking your main PC, get another, or even a Raspberry Pi, to experiment on. The Pi's are good, as the whole OS etc fits on one SD card. If you mess it up, it's trivial to wipe and start over. The latest Pi's are really good and powerful machines too, much more than you'd expect from something of it's size, and at the price, can't be beat. Dont give up. Keep moving. Explore the pre-built packages first, before trying to learn how to compile stuf from source. But when ready, get onto the Fldigi wiki, and follow the build instructions there, to build and install the latest Fldigi etc. http://www.w1hkj.com/doku/doku.php?id=start If needed, ask on linuxham.io for assistance, and it will be given. 73. Dave G0WBX. (KX3, TS870s, FT736r, Mostly Linux these days, but still use Windows at work.) Ok, here’s what was sent to me to get the 32 bit KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz installed on Linux Mint ‘Sylvia’ Cinnamon Desktop edition 18.3 64-bit. Now the KX3 Utility is running. tnx to all that responded. de George WD0AKZ dit – dit --- Try these suggestions to get 32-bit running. * Dependencies for use with Elecraft Linux-based Utilities 1) 32 bit vs 64 bit Distributions The Elecraft Utilities for Linux are 32-bit and require installing 32-bit compatiblity libraries on 64-bit distros that will allow 32-bit apps to run. On Unbuntu 14 and later based distros: sudo apt-get install libwebkitgtk-1.0.0:i386 sudo apt-get install libcanberra-gtk-module:i386 sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386 libglib2.0-0:i386 libsoup2.4-1:i386 libgtk2.0-0:i386 2) cURL must be installed on your Linux distro for FTP You will have to install cURL if it is not pre-installed. Most distros have it pre-installed, but not all. It is easy to install from a terminal: sudo apt-get install curl 3) Ensure your DialOut groups are set up properly Most users, other than root and members of the dialout group, do not have read/write permissions on the serial port device files. The Utilities cannot access the serial ports if the user does not have r/w permissions. An easy way to set the permissions is to add the user to the dialout group. sudo adduser username dialout 4) All files and directories included in the gzipped tar file must be kept together in the same location. The "Help directory", "Libs" directory (ie k3util Libs), and executable binary (ie k3util) must all be located together in the same directory. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

KX3 Utils I am running a totally basic Ubuntu Environment (64 bit). I will get the KX3 Utils, extract and check the file type mkdir /elecraft chdir /elecraft wget http://www.elecraft.com/software/KX3/KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz tar -zxvf KX3UtilityLINUX_1_16_6_25.tgz cd kx3util_1_16_6_25 Now to see what this file is file file kx3util I get the following output…. kx3util: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 2.6.0, stripped Ok - it is a 32bit Image… So it will not run. Here’s how to fix it, by adding the i386 Package ability, and then adding some needed libs dpkg --add-architecture i386 apt-get update apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386 Now if I check the file kx3util I can see it has resolved the i386 links (because I added the the i386 libs) ldd kx3util linux-gate.so.1 => (0xf77d) libdl.so.2 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2 (0xf77c4000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0xf77a7000) libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6 (0xf763) libm.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libm.so.6 (0xf75db000) libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xf75be000) libc.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0xf7407000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xf77d1000) Hope that is a slightly clearer instruction. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version
If you are not good at deciphering cryptic messages with geek words, don't use Linux. I do wish it were better, but Linux seems to be steeped in "geekdom language" - if you are not educated in the language, you do not deserve to be part of our culture. Until Linux produces plain text language for errors and such messages, it will not be a major player in the computer operating systems. Windows has its share of cryptic messages, but at least it is in plain text and does not often refer to "gobbledygook" that is only understood by Windows geeks. I have tried Linux and have been stiffed by questions to the forums saying essentially "if you don't understand the language, go away". I am not a computer dummy - I understand DOS, but the Linux language is a thing unto itself. Ubuntu and Linux Mint have reduced the Linux install process difficulty, but have not tackled the cryptic messages that can result. If you only want to do only email and web surfing, then Linux can work well for you, but anything else can be daunting with cryptic requests to enter a nonsensical string of commands for "who knows what results" and be shamed by the forum geeks who blame you for not understanding the language. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/11/2018 11:00 PM, George Pasek wrote: ./exec said: ./kx3util: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Add Arch support sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 Followed by sudo apt-get update Hit:1 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial InRelease Hit:2 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security InRelease Hit:3 http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu xenial InRelease Hit:4 http://ppa.launchpad.net/dansmith/chirp-snapshots/ubuntu xenial InRelease Hit:5 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates InRelease Hit:6 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-backports InRelease Ign:7 http://packages.linuxmint.com sylvia InRelease Hit:8 http://packages.linuxmint.com sylvia Release Reading package lists... Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Linux version
This, sadly, is the downfall of Linux. Nothing is easy! Linux mainstream versions such as Ubuntu and Mint are great systems - I run Mint dual boot with Win 10 here. That said, I use the Win 10 side for everything to do with my K-Line. I am spoiled, as are many others, by the ease of installation/operation of the software I use on a regular basis. Further, some software I use is not replaceable under Linux. There is nothing up to the job available. Wine is not the answer, as many Win programs will not properly run under Wine/Linux - if at all. Recently, there is also a problem with Wine itself - as being discussed on various Linux forums. Personally, I would much prefer to run Linux 100% - for various reasons (mainly security). That said, until Linux is made much more friendly to the new user and the available software library drastically increases, it will never be more than a very minor player at the user level. Linux is, however, a major player in higher levels. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Utility Segmentation Fault in Linux
Hi Knut, Because it relates to problems using our utility software his posting is certainly pertinent here. We have a lot of users who run our Utility s/w under Linux and the solution to his problem will help others. Just because you are not interested in a posting does not mean its inappropriate and does not interest others on the list. (The delete key is a wonderful tool to quickly eliminate those you do not wish to read..) Also, your posting below used the word 'period' at the end is what I referred to as rude and in essence orders them to take it elsewhere. "Ths Linux gobbledygook has no place here, period." It sounds like a parent disciplining a child. Neither a polite nor a respectful statement to another discussion list member. The last thing we want to do is to scare others away from asking questions or helping other on the list. If you have concerns about a posting please feel free to contact the list moderator and do -not- post them to the list. The moderator is the only list participant allowed to make any decisions about the appropriateness of a posting and to contact a poster or post on the list about them. Whew! - I guess people have been spending way too little time on the air and way too much time on the internet lately.. ;-) I'm out of time on this topic - so let's end the discussion for now. 73, Eric WA6HHQ List moderator - when I have time away from my daily responsibilities at Elecraft.. /elecraft.com/ On 3/21/2018 5:22 PM, ab2tc wrote: Hi, I've responded in a direct email to Eric, but maybe it it did not reach the group. so here it is: Hi Eric, With all respect, I was not by any means rude. This seems quite relevant. It literally has to do with getting Elecraft-provided and supported software to function on an Elecraft-supported computer operating system. Given the software-driven nature of the Elecraft product line, you can expect some discussion on software support issues on all of the various computer operating systems supported by Elecraft. --- Chuck Milam, N9KY n...@arrl.net On Wed, Mar 21, 2018 at 6:47 PM, ab2tcwrote: > Hi, > > Can you please move this conversation to a Linux guru forum? I run my ham software on Mac, not Linux, but I’d tag that post with “Nice Elmering”. It was specific and clear. Sorry for the meta-discussion, but I rode herd on netnews discussion groups for 5000+ engineers at HP for about a decade.
