A brief description of the DSM in relation to Exchange:

All objects in Exchange will have an ACL (Access Control List) as part of
it's Security Descriptor the same as any other object in NT. The
discretionary ACL (for it is he that we are talking about), will contain all
users who have (or perhaps explicitly do not have access) to this object

What is the significance of associating an NT user

Consider the following situation:

Now, what are steps in authenticating a mail client

I don't think there is anything available to recover the database but I wanted to investigate it first before I gave up hope. Hopefully a miracle will happen and someone will have a utility that might help. They are running with a database from Nov. 3rd so they didn't lose everything, only the last 2 stinking months of e-mail, but that makes a big difference to management.

What is the significance of associating an NT user
with an Exchange 5.5 mailbox?

Consider the following situation:
a) Exchange Server 5.5 which needs to be on a
   domain controller machine
b) I have an NT user on the same machine where
Exchange is installed and it is associated
   with a mailbox.

Now, what are steps in authenticating a mail client
like Outlook (from a different machine) with the mail
server like Exchange with the help of this NT user
association?

Thanks and regards,
Rajalakshmi Iyer

I run Exchange 5.5 on Win2k servers here with no problems at all, in fact I
believe it runs better on Win2K than it did on NT. We are still an NT
domain, haven't finished our AD migration - but your post doesn't specify
whether you are NT or AD.
So - if you are an NT domain - no real issues, just make sure you apply all
the appropriate Service Packs and security hot fixes.

I'm still not sure I understand what you're asking. You seem to indicate
that you think an NT account is created when you create a mailbox. Simply
populating the Assoc-Nt-Account DOES NOT create an NT account. You have to
create the NT account first then associate it with the mailbox. Your
application will access a DC to get a list of NT accounts which you can then
associate with a mailbox. It doesn't really matter where the application
runs. As long as you're logged into the domain you can access the DC's list
of NT users.

Now, consider the case, where my tool needs to add a new

Take the following scenario:

- This is not a domain controller. It is a member server.
Is it possible for me sitting on machine C, to create users

Are you just asking whether you can run a program on Machine C which will be
capable of associating NT accounts with mailboxes? The NT accounts will be
created on the DC (not on a member server). Therefore, when you attempt to
associate an NT account you will get the SID read from your DC. You can
create mailboxes on any Exchange server, in any container to which you have
access.

- I want to create a new mailbox in Exchange. Correspondingly,
I need to create an NT user who shall be associated with this
mailbox by populating the assoc-nt-account and nt-security-descriptor
attributes of the mailbox entry. So will my tool sitting on machine
C be able to create an NT user in machine B ? Is some kind of
trust relationship required to be established between Machine B
and C, for C to be able to create user accounts in B.

I came across an AcctMgmt COM component in MSDN, which does
the same, but was not able to achieve the desired result.

(the mailbox in this case) and what their rights are (each entry is
contained in an ACE or Access Control Entry). When you log in to NT you get
a token which, when you try and access any object (including logging on to a
mailbox) is compared against it's ACL. If there is a match you get the
designated access to that object.

2002-01-10 Thread Rajalakshmi Iyer

I do understand that I have to create an NT account before I can
populate the Assoc-NT-Account and NT-Security-Descriptor fields
of the LDAP entry.

With reference to the discussion below:
When my application is installed on machine B (domain controller,
where Exchange is installed), new NT users are created and
associations established properly.
When my application is installed on machine C (the member
server), I am not able to access machine B's User information.

My application makes use of the AcctMgmt CoClass provided by
Microsoft. This CoClass exposes interfaces like NTAccountCreate,
NTAccountDelete, GetSidFromName etc. We chose to use this
component instead of the normal Win32 APIs to retrieve the SID
and Security Information, because we couldnt obtain the binary
format of Security Descriptor attribute that needs to be
populated for NT-Security-Descriptor of LDAP mailbox entry.

RE: Database recovery help

2002-01-10 Thread larry . manno

I had the same type of problem with a corrupt database with no good
backups. We worked with MS and ended up shipping them a tape with an
off-line backup of the bad databases and they were able to extract almost
all the email from it. Now at the same time the company had agreed to sign
up for a Permier support contract, (lots of bucks). So, if you talk to
the right people and have enough they can get mail out of the
database.

Unfortunately not this time. I don't know if they have the option of
taking the database and working on it but they did not offer that solution.
I believe the exchange database is so sensitive to corruption that there
isn't much that can be done once it is corrupted, unlike a SQL database. I
know SQL can be difficult to deal with but at least you can extract
individual tables to recover some data. I also don't like the fact that
the Exchange database relys so heavily on log files.

I've had good luck with MS assistance as well and it is worth the money.
Unfortunately MS was not able to help this time. I don't think there is
anything available to recover the database but I wanted to investigate it
first before I gave up hope. Hopefully a miracle will happen and someone
will have a utility that might help. They are running with a database from
Nov. 3rd so they didn't lose everything, only the last 2 stinking months of
e-mail, but that makes a big difference to management.

Yup...just went thru the scenerio described...my database went bad...only
to
realize we were backing up the wrong info...spent 3-4 hours running all the
esutils with no luck...called MS support at 11:30pm (thinking there was no
way they could help me with no backups)...they had my Exchange up in 20
minutes...and worked to clean out the database thru the next day (I was so
so relieved..)...also taught me how to backup (correctly)...boy did I learn
a lot. Best $249.00 I've ever spent...saved my ass and my job.

RE: no outgoing mail

2002-01-10 Thread Eric Brouwer

The other day when I was looking for anti-spam help (thank you all that
responded. Cleaning everything out did the trick!), this was EXACTLY how I
discovered we were exploited. Interoffice mail was fine. We received from
the internet fine. We just couldn't send. Our outbound queue had a limit
of 25,000 messages (is that an Exchange limit or something we set up?) and
the spam hit the ceiling. After cleaning both the outbound queues, and
closing the relay, we were fine.

I have an exchange 5.5 sp4 machine that has suddenly stopped sending
outgoing mail. Outside mail is being routed internally, and internal mail is

routed fineit's just mail destined for outside.

The exchange box uses a different dns server than it did previously, but
this was done weeks ago. Messages stopped going out after a reboot
yesterday. I've tried switching back to the old dns server, to no avail.

The Exchange box is behind a proxy 2.0.

Any ideas would be helpful. I can't find anything on TechNet.

Hi,

What is the significance of associating an NT user
with an Exchange 5.5 mailbox?

Consider the following situation:
a) Exchange Server 5.5 which needs to be on a
   domain controller machine
b) I have an NT user on the same machine where
Exchange is installed and it is associated
   with a mailbox.

Now, what are steps in authenticating a mail client
like Outlook (from a different machine) with the mail
server like Exchange with the help of this NT user
association?

Thanks and regards,

Subject: RE: NT user Exchange mailbox association

I am working on a synchronization tool that will synchronize
recipient entries between Exchange and any other directory
server.
Now, consider the case, where my tool needs to add a new
mailbox into Exchange, then it also need to associate an NT
user on the machine where Exchange is installed with the
Exchange mailbox.
Take the following scenario:
a. Domain A
b. Machine B (domain controller) where Exchange is installed. I assume this
is the DC for Domain A?
- Yes machine B is the domain controller for domain A
c. Machine C (in domain A) where my tool is installed. Is this a DC also or
a member server?
- This is not a domain controller. It is a member server.
Is it possible for me sitting on machine C, to create users
in Machine B ? Create NT users or mailboxes??

Thanks and regards,

as a mail domain, isn't one of the users on it - i.e. the sender needs
to check the e-mail address of the person they're sending
to.

best-practice document explaining how to prevent spam msgs?

2002-01-10 Thread Jesse Rink

Alright. We do not have any content filtering software on our Exchange
server at this time. As most Exchange admins are aware, content filtering
software can cause just as many headaches after it's been installed prior
to it being installed at all.

The best way to prevent unwanted spam seems to be for users NOT to give
out their email address over the web (surveys, etc.), not to sign up for
newsletters, not to do online ordering, and other obvious things. I'm
wondering if there's a document out there that someone has used that
explains these things in detail? Basically a How to prevent unwanted
email - faq or something like that that I can send out to our users...

Any idea?

Free Email Previewer/Screener For
Outlook

 I recently went a few
rounds with Microsoft Tech Support on the Outlook
2000 security patch which disallows receiving
certain types of files Their response, of course, was
that there was no way to fix it, but I COULD upgrade
to Office XP to get a version that allows me to
change those settings. No surprise, to override a
Microsoft caused issue, I just have to give them
more money.

 HOWEVER, there is another
solution. A handy utility called "Chilton Preview"
for Outlook gives you a nifty preview screen that
allows you to retrieve any enclosures that Microsoft
says you cannot get. I recommend it to anyone who
has applied this patch, and wants to get to their
enclosures. You can find it at http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Peaks/8392/

It's _like_ AD -- but it doesn't work nearly as well, and it's nearly
impossible to set up. Granted, I only spent 6 months as a Notes
Admin, but they were a VERY unhappy 6 months.

MS AD simply works better and is easier to administer.

 Interesting;

What doesn't make sense specifically? Other companies have
multimaster replication in their products for many many years but when
MS develops it, it is now an acceptible practice and AD is cool/Domino

"This patch is intended for users with MS Outlook 98 / 2000 and Service Pack

Microsoft) blocking all incoming attachments with the extensions like EXE and
LNK. The problem: you can't undo the security fix, and you won't be able to
open, save or forward (for example) a URL attachment after installing the

give you control about which file extensions will be blocked, or not. The patch
will update the outllib.dll in your office folder and disable the security on

When we do a hard repair to the database then restart the Exchange services we can see
how many items belong to a folder and we can see all of the folders, default and

RE: Database recovery help

2002-01-10 Thread Todd Wood

Microsoft recommends an Exchange aware agent to backup a live database. Depending on
what software vendor you are using you should be able to purchase an Exchange agent so
you can do brick level backups and restores (brick level is to the mailbox level and
down to a single e-mail). I know CA's ArcserveIT has the agent and I think all the
other major players do too.

If you can afford that then you should do a flat file backup but that requires you to
stop the Exchange services then backup the priv, pub and dir.edb file. this only
allows you to restore the entire database instead of a single mailbox or e-mail.

I would hightly recommend the first option.

The best way to prevent unwanted spam seems to be for users NOT to give

newsletters, not to do online ordering, and other obvious things. I'm
wondering if there's a document out there that someone has used that
explains these things in detail? Basically a How to prevent unwanted

What kind of hardware(Server brand, CPU, # of CPU's). Is it in the HCL for WIN2K. When I've seen this in the past it generally a result of I/O threads being maxed out or to many locks open at once. Then the JET DB times out in some cases as it stops working for about 1-2 minutes and then you see this error posted in the Event Log.

How much volume(total internet messages) are you pumping through the IMS? You might be hitting some limit. Have you run the OPTIMIZE(-v) in verbose mode? Can you send me your thread settings for the IMS?

purchase an Exchange agent so you can do brick level backups and restores
(brick level is to the mailbox level and down to a single e-mail). I know
CA's ArcserveIT has the agent and I think all the other major players do
too.

If you can afford that then you should do a flat file backup but that
requires you to stop the Exchange services then backup the priv, pub and
dir.edb file. this only allows you to restore the entire database instead
of a single mailbox or e-mail.

I would hightly recommend the first option.

WE fought the same battle here.. We couldn't justify using 2
different solutions. Symantec has upped there AV support response and updates,
so we went to NAV for Exchange. We also use NAV for Internet Mail Gateways -
Exchange. It works very well for blocking bad files and the newest version has
some nice enhancements. Ultimately it's up to you... But for us a total NAV
  solution works well.

  Antivirus add-ons for Exchange 5.5 - trends/nav
We currently use Symantec AntiVirus for the Enterprise on our
desktop and have had good success to date. Our Exchange server currently
does NOT have an Antivirus add-on installed. I would like to see some
kind of scanning software on the box for additional protection.
Since we already have NAV for the Enterprise, we have a copy
of NAV for Exchange as well. This would not cost any additional funds to
get this extra protection. However, I am under the impression it's
always a good idea to put a different piece of antivirus software on the
Exchange server as opposed to the desktop to minimize the amount of time to
retrieve updated virus definitions. In other words, if I have both NAV
and Trends installed and a virus breaks out, Trends may have the definitions
before NAV so we'd be better covered than if we had NAV on our Exchange
  server.
Unfortunately Trends costs about $5000 or so (we have 350
Exchange users). Has anyone used both of these products and can help me
determine whether the additional cost is worth the piece of mind?
Personally I'd like to see it happen and get Trends but I'm trying to justify
the cost as opposed to an already-free solution.
  Thanks.

Free Email Previewer/Screener For

 I recently went a few
rounds with Microsoft Tech Support on the
Outlook 2000 security patch which disallows
receiving certain types of files Their
response, of course, was that there was no way
to fix it, but I COULD upgrade to Office XP to
get a version that allows me to change those settings.
No surprise, to override a Microsoft caused
issue, I just have to give them more
money.

 HOWEVER, there is
another solution. A handy utility called
"Chilton Preview" for Outlook gives you a nifty preview
screen that allows you to retrieve any
enclosures that Microsoft says you cannot get. I
recommend it to anyone who has applied this
patch, and wants to get to their enclosures. You can find

Alright. We do not have any content filtering software on our Exchange
server at this time. As most Exchange admins are aware, content
filtering software can cause just as many headaches after it's been
installed prior to it being installed at all.

 Any idea?

Exchange 5.5 SP4 Duplicate Messages

2002-01-10 Thread John Morin

Help!

I have one exchange box running nt4 SP6a with exchange 5.5 SP4 on it. We
migrated from Ipswitch Imail a year ago and everything to date has gone well
with Exchange except for one nagging problem I cannot find a resolution to.
Duplicate email messages intermittently will occur in various users Outlook
2000 mail client. I originally thought the problem was only with users who
have both exchange and internet mail services configured in Outlook 2000.
Those people were told to pick one and stick with it. Recently however, a
user configured for IMO in Outlook 2000 began receiving duplicate messages
as well. This is a remote user, so he dials up to the internet sporadically
through the day and checks for email. The duplicates will appear in the
first download of the day, but clear up afterward. It is all messages that
are duplicated when this happens, not just messages addressed to DL's or
multiple recipients. I can locate technet notes on duplicate messages in
public folders, but I cannot find any info on problems with duplicate
messages in user mailboxes.

Thanks for any help.

Microsoft recommends an Exchange aware agent to backup a live database.
Depending on what software vendor you are using you should be able to
purchase an Exchange agent so you can do brick level backups and restores
(brick level is to the mailbox level and down to a single e-mail). I know
CA's ArcserveIT has the agent and I think all the other major players do
too.

If you can afford that then you should do a flat file backup but that
requires you to stop the Exchange services then backup the priv, pub and
dir.edb file. this only allows you to restore the entire database instead
of a single mailbox or e-mail.

I would hightly recommend the first option.

Yup...just went thru the scenerio described...my database went bad...only to
realize we were backing up the wrong info...spent 3-4 hours running all the
esutils with no luck...called MS support at 11:30pm (thinking there was no
way they could help me with no backups)...they had my Exchange up in 20
minutes...and worked to clean out the database thru the next day (I was so
so relieved..)...also taught me how to backup (correctly)...boy did I learn
a lot. Best $249.00 I've ever spent...saved my ass and my job.

Server performance burdened with IIS and Exchange on the same box.
Applying IIS patches to your exchange server can be annoying.

RE: Exchange 5.5 SP4 Duplicate Messages

2002-01-10 Thread John Morin

I should have mentioned in the original message that the resources in the
Private Information Store - Mailbox resources showed he had completely
downloaded all messages and the mailbox was empty. When disconnects with
POP3 occur, I always send users to OWA to clean out the offending large file
(usually a powerpoint presentation).

In the past, when large files and interrupted pop3 sessions occur, users
generally try two or more times and find they have many duplicates of a
message. The problem I have here is messages are duplicated once and once
only, so it appears to me to be a problem in the IS somehow.

If it was with Internet mail, it could be that his POP3 connection crapped
out, and it is leaving the message on the server. And then when it
retries, it downloads it again. You can have him connect to the server
using a POP3 viewer (like Lydia) and viewing the headers without touching
them.

Help!

I have one exchange box running nt4 SP6a with exchange 5.5 SP4 on it. We
migrated from Ipswitch Imail a year ago and everything to date has gone
well
with Exchange except for one nagging problem I cannot find a resolution to.

Thanks for any help.

ol2002 out of ofice [sic] stopped working

2002-01-10 Thread Allan Muchmore
Title: Message

Any thoughts as to why Out of Ofice Assistant would
suddenly stop working? Have Outlook 2002 with Exchange 5.5 server.

Everything looks to be set up correctly. When I
startup Outlook for the user, it notifies me that Out of Ofice is on, and I
don't turn it off. But no responses go out to either local or internet users. I
double-checked that the "disable out of ofice replies" in the IMC connector in
exchang is NOT selected.

This user has used the out of ofice feature
successfully in the past. I think since we upgraded to Outlook 2002 (from
Outlook 98).

Any thoughts?

Allan
P.S. the listserver
rejected message with "out of ofice" spelled correctly. I wondering why an
archive search didn't return a single reference to this topic!

Grab the Qarticle on optimizing your IMS and see if that corrects your problem.

Do you
have logging turned on/up in the IMS? IF so, what is it set too. It should be
minimum. Max will definitely cause you problems. You should only use MAX
settings if your trying to debug a problem on the IMS.

In so
far as volume goes, if you don't have monitoring software available, the best
way is to use PERFMON and use the Total Messages hook listed there. This can be
set to give you a 24 hour window of message sent if you wish. Then you can x5
that for you weekly loads.

How

Fred,

I recently completed a move from an NT4.0(SP6a) Exchange 5.5 server (SP4) to
a Win2K(SP2) Exchange 5.5 server (SP4). The Ed Crowley method worked
beautifully for me - no problems.
Keep in mind that if you do go to a Win2k server, you will lose the NT BDC
functionality that you had on your old server - everything else should work
just fine.

You always have great info to share...as usual...we are a small enterprise

upgrading the exchange server hardware)...your right, my concerns do deal
with having to enble IIS and constantly making sure all the patches are

Hi Fred:

Pros: Single admin entity
Simple for small deployments
Less hardware, therefor cheaper.

Cons: IIS and the related patches reside on the mail server.
Server performance burdened with IIS and Exchange on the same box.
Applying IIS patches to your exchange server can be annoying.

Exch 5.5 sp4 on Nt4 sp6

We are in the middle of consolidating as many machines in our infrastructure

the Exchange server itself? Thanks all for all the help and

William,

I will be moving my old exchange server(ex55sp4,NT4sp6,BDC) to the new
server(Nt4sp6). Is it any harder to move to Win2K server?...or use a
different name on the new NT box? We don't use ADS as of yet so the install
will still be EX55sp4. I may be using the Ed Crowley move method.

Thanks again,

I should have mentioned in the original message that the resources in the Private Information Store - Mailbox resources showed he had completely downloaded all messages and the mailbox was empty. When disconnects with POP3 occur, I always send users to OWA to clean out the offending large file (usually a powerpoint presentation).

In the past, when large files and interrupted pop3 sessions occur, users generally try two or more times and find they have many duplicates of a message. The problem I have here is messages are duplicated once and once only, so it appears to me to be a problem in the IS somehow.

If it was with Internet mail, it could be that his POP3 connection crapped out, and it is leaving the message on the server. And then when it retries, it downloads it again. You can have him connect to the server using a POP3 viewer (like Lydia) and viewing the headers without touching them. ~

duplicates of a message. The problem I have here is messages are duplicated
once and once only, so it appears to me to be a problem in the IS
  somehow.

  Exchange 5.5 SP4 Duplicate Messages
If it was with Internet mail, it could be that his POP3
connection crapped out, and it is leaving the message on the server. And
then when it retries, it downloads it again. You can have him connect to
the server using a POP3 viewer (like Lydia) and viewing the headers without
  touching them. ~

  Help!
  I have one exchange box running nt4 SP6a with exchange 5.5 SP4
on it. We migrated from Ipswitch Imail a year ago and everything to date has
gone well with Exchange except for one nagging problem I cannot find a
resolution to. Duplicate email messages intermittently will occur in various
users Outlook 2000 mail client. I originally thought the problem was only with
users who have both exchange and internet mail services configured in Outlook
2000. Those people were told to pick one and stick with it. Recently however,
a user configured for IMO in Outlook 2000 began receiving duplicate messages
as well. This is a remote user, so he dials up to the internet sporadically
through the day and checks for email. The duplicates will appear in the first
download of the day, but clear up afterward. It is all messages that are
duplicated when this happens, not just messages addressed to DL's or multiple
recipients. I can locate technet notes on duplicate messages in public
folders, but I cannot find any info on problems with duplicate messages in
  user mailboxes.
  Thanks for any help.

Reassigning tasks

2002-01-10 Thread Fred Valdez

Scenerio:

Ex55sp4, Nt4srvrsp6, Outlook2000

We had an employee who left recentlybefore she left, she reassigned her
tasks to her manager...I have since deleted both the user and email account
of the former employee. The tasks that have been assigned to the manager
can be openned, but when updated, it wants to also update the former
employee's task (in the details tab update list). Is there any way to
edit and take that person off the update list.

Thanks,

Fred Valdez
