Re: [expert] FinePix S304 usb camera - latest attempt of many
Anne, I added a line in fstab like this: /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto user, noauto, nosuid 0 0 I must say that I have supermount disabled (9.0), I created a hd icon on kde selecting /dev/sda1 as device. Also I had to created the directory (mkdir -m 777 /mnt/camera) Under 9.1 rc2 a line similar was automatically added to fstab and into the removable media ico I could create the hd icon. Runing fine > Do you have an fstab line for it? I have an entry in KDiskFree for > /dev/sdb as /mnt/camera, but when I try to mount it I get 'No medium > found'. No, I never have tested xD, the camera came with a 16mb Smartmedia and i added a 128Mb one, but I don have any xD to test; the camera has the slot to put one but no one coming with it. I have thought about buy one, but I would like to know if xD could be detected from linux previously. [expert] 9.1 comming?
I have removed the last bug I had for 9.1 (^_^) I think 9.1 is ready to come. I will be a great distributions, the Mandrake team has worked very well, draktools look pretty well and now seems that all are runing (even my digital camera has been instaled throughout a line in the fstab about usb-storage media). I hope Mandrake could survive to its finnancial problems, there has been a great activity the last month (new releases, a book, .. Anyway, I have the cooker from last mondey with some updates packages, so it is practically the real 9.1, but I am still nervous waiting for it. (^_^) Happy for Mandrake 9.1, :-( sad because it seems that sooner millions of irakies will probably be fighted by the war. Ric, I don't like friends that ever says yes to me; if he think I have a not good idea, a good friends must say "not my friend, your aren't right; this you try to do is not good" And frankly, American have made lots of good think, but also lot of bad ones and this, the war against Irak it seems to me is not good. In fact any war is good and this we can (must) stop it. Are the French gobernement less friends to say that?; are we supporting Sadam for say that?. Don't be wrong and just think about how many innocents will die and how many will have to leave their country, loose their family. Re: [expert] Kodak Digital Camera and MDK9
>It uses CompactFlash. OK, then you need to conect it as a scsi device, those are the step you should follow (I hope it will work for you): A) be sure the next modules are loaded (as root with lsmod): usb usb-core usb-storage ide-scsi If some of then are not loaded, you shoud probe them (modprobe usb-storage, for example); if not error message the next time you must install with insmod usb-storage (for the same example). B) It is a good idea to create a dir to mount the camera in: mkdir -777 /mnt/camera (for example; you can select other montage point if you like). C) conect the camera to the computer using the usb cable; put the camera in the position of download images (usually the same position to see in the visor the images, if you have one). D) The first time you should test as root the montage: mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera If everything has gone well, as root you can open konqueror, nautilus or other file-explorer and going to /mnt/camera see the images stored in the CompactFlash. You can now copy the images or avi files to any directory in you HD. ARemember to umount (umount /mnt/camera) E) If D has run for you, you can make a change in the /etc/fstab file to allow any user mount and umount /mnt/camera. For this add the next line inf /etc/fstab: /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera auto user, noauto, nosuid 0 0 Remember that a blank line should be at the end of the fstab file (add it if is needed). Now, still as root: mount -a And any user will be able to mount and umount the camera when conected. As I use KDE, it is easy create a new icon (create---new hd-- and select as montage point /dev/sda1), so you can mount and umount easily the cameras as a removable media. My Mandrake Club will expire in more or less a month, I was decided to renove it, but now I am in a trouble. Will Mandrake dissapear and due to that I will lost the money and the services of the club? or this will help Mandrake to survive? I actually don't know what to do??? [expert] First 9.1beta frustrating experience
Dear friends, After 13 hours I downloaded the beta1 and try to test it using my /dev/hdb13 partition that was previously using LiNeX (Linux distribution from the Extremadura Spanish community). But I have a real nightmare: a) My wheel mouse wasn't runing fine, in the selection packages I had to use the intro key. b) No possibility to cancel lilo installation (I liked to mantain the 9.0 lilo configuration and later add from 9.0 a new entry for 9.1beta). c) No X configured (nvidia geforce 4 and monitor Philips 107S); I try to do it but having supermount enabled the disk didn't mount in anyway. I try to dissable supermount (supermount -i disable) and activate the new fstab configuration (mount -a) but two partition that I have mounted for echange of files with 9.0 had XFS file system and there were an error: "XFS not in enabled in the kernel" :-(. After that I thought I could mount the cdroms by hand, but an error gives me to more frustation about too much system mounted, or file system error. d) I try to restart using my Mandrake 9.0 start disk, but then an error with file system appear for /dev/hdb13 (the partition with 9.1), telling that I do need a newer version of ext3 :-(. e) I started my computer from the Mandrake 9.0 first cdrom, start a new expert installation, just select the /dev/hdb13 partition and format it; then I restart and Mandrake 9 run fine from the floppy; I went to the Mandrake control center and lilo configuration; I didn't made any change, but clicking accept the 9.0 lilo configuration was again saved on the harddrive. I restart the computer and then the lilo 9.0 runs from the hd. Conclusion: I will reserv the cdrw with 9.1 beta 1 to save beta 2; I think I will not try again an installation until the next beta. :-( -- Francisco Alcaraz Ariza Departamento de Biología Vegetal Universidad de Murcia Campus de Espinardo E-30100 Murcia España (Spain) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [expert] mldonkey, kazaa, emule
I suppose you are tolking of kazaa lite 2.0.2; the installation under wine is different than for 1.7; this is I did to have it installed: 1) You nee to add in your /home//.wine a new directory named fake_windows and inside it a directory named Windows and inside it another named System (/home//fake_windows/Windows/System); in this directory (System) you need to add the following files from the windows system directory: winspool.drv, commctrl.dll, comct132dll, comdlg32.dll, shdoclc.dll, shdocvw.dll, shlwapi.dll, ole32.dll, oleaut.dll and rpcrt4.dll 2) In your wine config file you need to add: [Version] "windows" = "win98" and at the end of the file: [AppDefaults\\Kazaa.exe\\DllOverrides] "winspool.drv" = "native" "commctrl" = "native" "comctl32" = "native" "comdlg32" = "native" "shdoclc" = "native" "shdocvw" = "native" "shlwapi" = "native" "ole32" = "native" "oleaut32" = "native" "rpcrt4" = "native" 3) Now you can choice between run kazaa from your windows partition or do a installation in your .wine/fake_windows directory (wine kazaa_lite_202_englishexe) That runed for me in both cases, a installation in .wine and run kazaa from the windows partition. I have tested several files-share packages under linux, but the performance is not as good as I would like. Mldonkey seems to be good, lot of servers and shared files, but when I try to download big files, usually the download sooner or later stops. Re: [expert] Mandrake and USB camera confusion
That was wath I did with 3 different cameras (Olympus, Nikon, Fuji) and all of them run (this was done by hand; if it run you can change some files to automatice): A) have loaded the next modules: usb, usb-core, usb-storage, ide-scsi B) Create a directory to mount the camera: mkdir -m 777 /mnt/camera C) Plug-in the camera via USB, put it in download position. D) mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera (you can also mount with "auto" file sistem. Now I have the camera contents as a new scsi drive (/mnt/camera) and I can easily copy the images to my actual harddrive I hope this could help you -- Francisco Alcaraz Ariza Departamento de Biología Vegetal Universidad de Murcia E-30100 Murcia España (Spain) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] Nvidia tvout: solved
Well, It seems that at the moment nvtv (release 0.4.04) can't work with my video card chip (Geforce 4 Titanium 420), but the Nvidia drivers can run relatively well; after looking for information in the Internet, I found the solution, just adding in the XF86Config-4 file the next lines in the Section "Devices": Option "TwinView" Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-50" Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60" Option "ConnectedMonitor" "null,TV" Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B" Option "TwinViewOrientation" "Clone" Option "Metamodes" "1024x768,null;800x600,800x600;640x480,640x480;" Now I can have the image in both, pc-monitor and tv, at 800x600 and 640x480 resolutions, so switching between resolutions ("CTRL"+ "ALT"+"+ or -") . Ah! and at the maximum ressolution just is activated the pc-monitor. [expert] Nvidia runing but...
Dear Friends, I finally bought a Creative Blaster 4 Titanium 4200 with the Nvidia Geforce4 Ti chip. Thanks to the comments in this list and the expert one the installation was very easy. First I edited initab to put the text mode star; then I installed the two rpm nvidia files and also the nvtv file; I activated harddrake service and stoped the computer. Then I made the change of my Voodoo3 3000 and I put the new video-card in the AGP slot. I started again Mandrake and harddrake erase the Voodo3 3000 installation. From the console as root I started XFdrake and few seconds later I had my new card instaled with DRI runing. Now I am testing several programes: tuxracer impressive, xine fine, Armagetron and Chromium runing fine. But I have found two problems: 1) Quake III looks awfull; perhaps I need to select some special graphic characteristics; the videos and demos look very nice, but when I start to play the graphics are very bad. 2) With nvtv (tv-output) I can see the colors bars in my tv, but when I try to send the whole screen to the tv just a white screen. Perhaps I need to change something in the XFree86 Config files. Re: [expert] Microsoft will not be divided
Perhaps, as one of the Republicans said, Bush is too much of the right wing. the Kyoto accords in fact would be insufficient to stop the global climate change, they just could make it go a little be slow. And what about the galaxy war, just the very right Spanish Prime Minister (Aznar) has supported that crazy strategy in the European Community (but, perhaps Blair also, but this was obvious). Globalization in fact could be good if means help for the poorer peoples of the Earth and not more explotation, not multinationals enterprise eating small ones and eliminating the competence to make unique and very expensive products. The last that we need now is start again gun manufacturation, more polution to our environment and other things that Bush is predicating in favour all over the rich World. We must look for alternatives; I hope an united Europe could be, and Europe in favour of the 0.7%, open source software, solar energy, solidarity, richness redistribution and so one. Unfortunately, most of our nowadays Governement are of the right wing, even some of them named laborist or of the left-center :-( But we have linux in our computers and this is a clear bet for the freedom and solidarity. BTW, Hispalinux, a Spanish linux distribution based on RedHat, has made agreements with several not governamental organizations (in Spain we say ONG) to install linux in computers that those ONG are giving to poor countries in Africa. [expert] Gnome-Bonobo and virus
Dear folks, I would like to have information about probable problems of macro-virus due to the Bonobo architecture. For some authors Bonobo is based in the comunication models of Windows, but with the basic structure of CORBA. Nowadays, Bonobo allows any aplication look into the data of anyother aplication and use it as a tool. Technologically it seems it is posible create gnome-virus and the sandbox model is relatively easy to be jumped (this is an affirmation put on in a Spanish magazine -Solo Linux, number 12-). I use mainly KDE, but I am also interested in know others windows manager, gnome is the other main candidate, but now, with the 1.4 version in MDK 8, that uses Bonobo, I am wondering if it could be a good idea use it. What do you think?, if the philosophy is based in Visual Basic, the possibility of macro-virus is true, isn't it? I hope we can have a good discussion about this subject. Re: [expert] Nedit commands keys problems
Jay I have solved the problem ^_^, well, actually I have found the solution in the nedit page FAQ: "You haven't overlooked anything, it's a Motif design flaw. Netscape painfully works around this and the Alt/Meta key reversal on Sun workstations by internally re-implementing the Motif menu accelerator mechanism. NEdit will likely follow suit with the next major release." This new versions is adapted to kernel 2.4 series and XFree86 4.x; in fact it compiles fine, but when I try to start the sound is enabled but not the video; I have an error: File /root/.xawdecode/yuvtab10_16 not found .xawdecode is present but actually yuvtab10_16 not. :-( I have read all the ASCII files included, they tolk about a forum and a chat but they don't give the location of both. [expert] Swat configuration
Dear Folks, I am trying to configure samba in a computer with MDK 8.0 and I have a problem ( I suppose I'll will have more, now I just starting). Under kernel 2.2.x to acced at SWAT we had to add some lines in the file /etc/inet.conf like this: swat stream tcp nowati.400 root /usr/local/samba/bin/swat swat The problems is that now I can't find the file inet.conf; in fact, using locate.. the file doesn't appear in any partition :-( If the file doesn't exist, What must I do to run SWAT? Are there others changes from 2.2.x kernel to activate samba under kernel 2.4.x? Thanks so much for your attention, have a nice day ^_^ -- Francisco Alcaraz Murcia (Spain)
Re: [expert] Re: Are you sure that IP Virtual Server is supported by the kernel
Civileme, the file was /etc/rc.d/init.d/lvs; I commented some lines and now not more error messages in startup ^_^ MDK 8.0 look great now, not errors, true graphic acceleration, Usb Scanner, DVD (xine and videoland runs fine using xvideo), ip-maskering, printers, cable-modem, sound. What more could I ask for! :-( Yeah!, the pcmcia ethernet card in the laptop (Ovislink fast ethernet), but is very difficult (nobody in the world seemed to have reached that); perhaps change to a clearly compatible with linux. Re: [expert] Mandrake 8.0 & Voodoo DRI
John the problem is not with xdm, that also works fine, but kdm, an equivalent to xdm created to KDE. BDW, how did you do the change? Re: [expert] Mandrake 8.0 & Voodoo DRI
John, I sent a message to the bug support of XFree86, an automatical answer said that they are studing the problem and they will communicate to me sooner o later ; Guillaume said also that hi has sent the information to the person in Mandrake that works with the X. As soon that I had messages from they I'll e-mail you and, I think, also the expert list because probably there are more user of linux with a Voodoo that perhaps could think they have a installation or a hardware problem. Re: [expert] Mandrake 8.0 & Voodoo DRI
John & Will, I made the change in XFreeConfig-4 that said John and, efectively, full screen games, like pingus, run again (remember that pingus doesn't need 3d-acceleration). The conclusion of John is true: At least for Vodoo3 3000, DRI has a bug and switching resolution is controled but this module; if you try to change resolutions or a game or other type of aplication try to do that, doesn't matter if they use or not 3d acceleration, DRI make the action and crashes X. I have posted a bug report to XFree86, I hope they will work on the problem. I will post in the expert list any comments that the XFree86 team sent to me about this subject (I hope a patch or so on). Note for the person of the mandrake team in charge of the X: could you check that and also communicate to the Xfree86 team, I am sure they will work faster if they know that Mandrake is also interested in the problem. :-) Thanks. See you soon, I hope wit good news -- Francisco Alcaraz Murcia (Spain)
