Anyone know where i can get some sorrel to plant, seeds , or
plants-for growing and sharing from my garden? I've been searching.

Specifically, sorrel may help to :-

*  As an antiseptic
*  Diarrhea
*  Fluid retention
*  Scurvy
* Side effects of Sorrel
Call your health care practitioner if you experience any of these
possible side effects of sorrel:

* gastroenteritis (stomach inflammation leading to nausea, vomiting,
abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea)
*  jaw tightness
*  skin rash.
This herb also can cause:
*  brain damage
*  kidney damage
*  heart damage
*  liver damage.
Are there any interactions? Combining herbs with certain drugs
(or FFL CHATS) may alter their action or produce unwanted side effects.
Are you sure?
Do You need that in context to above postings? [:)]

Well, of course it's a defense of Barry. You're trying (very

If you were a better friend to Barry, you'd take him aside

I was wondering about anti-D's in particular. Folks can go through doldrums

other more common depression.

Is there a place for anti-D's for the spiritual depression of Acedia? Or do
those drugs while being as physiological mood-elevators dull spiritual

Anybody got experience that way with it? Seems there is a lot prescribing of

If you haven't noticed, there's a nation-wide underground craze
for backyard and urban chickens, to which I too have fallen prey. Yet
the farmer in me has not yet smothered the MBA. The following is an
objective analysis of whether or not the output of backyard chickens can
ultimately re-coop the costs. The answer was surprising, and
I have produced 5 key recommendations for economically raising backyard
chickens.

Friends frequently ask me whether or not raising my hens is
cost-effective. Everything I've read on the subject in
blogs and books says NO. Instead, enthusiasts emphasize personal
satisfaction and pet-potential. These are no doubt the true goals of
backyard chicken-raising. Yet I am weary of deflecting this common
question, and I am happy to further study my birds. Not to mention that
my personal flock serves as a wonderful test case. I raise two hens
(the minimum flock size) in New York City (the most costly and crowded
environment). If I can do this cost-effectively, anyone can!

http://www.goodeater.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/IMG_54832.jpg
I'll address assumptions as we go, but it is important to note that
I have sought to save money whenever possible, using found objects and
substituting my labor for fancy equipment. The most significant example
is the chicken coop itself. Good wooden chicken coops for small flocks
sell for $300-450. Yet it would take a long time to recoup that money.
I was about to join those ranks, until I found, the dresser. . .

Returning home from a night on the town, I came across a solid wooden
dresser down the block. With a weekend of work, I turned her into a
chicken mansion — NYC-size. The first drawer is filled with bedding
material. The second drawer is a perch. The top right drawer is a
nesting box. Everything else is hollowed out. And after several
iterations, I put the whole thing on stilts.

Enough fluff. Let's populate the model:
Up-Front Costs
* 3 rolls of Chicken Wire ($17 ea): $51
* 2 Chickens ($15 ea + $20 gas): $50
* Feeder: $4.50
* Water Bottle: $4.00
* Poultry Grit (5lb, will probably last forever): $8
* Shipping for above items: $3

Total: $121

Britain's dealing with a Conservative Prime Minister in a coalition
with Liberal Democrats. Rather than steamrolling through the aggressive
(and regressive) plans for change that he'd initially penned, David
Cameron has to negotiate a little with the Lib Dems. Just a little,
mind. It's not like he's having to discuss this with folk who
are fierce ideological opponents. Liberalism once had some fairly
impressive views about social change and the evils of private property
http://virtualstoa.net/2010/05/24/liberalism-once-upon-a-time/ but
today, Liberal Democrats are Conservatives' super-ego: they'll
moralise, opine, quake and then let the free market do its thing. But at
least there's the illusion of a coalition government, in which tough
ideological differences need to be overcome.

The New Statesman
http://www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2010/05/government-term-pace-mi\
nisters recently carried a piece which drew on my treatment of
Zapatista politics, of what I called `Slow Politics'. Michel
Bauwens at the P2P Foundation http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/ asked
whether I could make the discussion available and so, for what it's
worth, here are the few relevant pages from The Value of Nothing. Be
warned, though. There's little here that Cameron and Clegg might be
able to adopt. Changing the tempo of the LibDem-Conservative coalition
is unlikely to change its politics. What the Zapatista's demand is
something altogether more democratic, something that treats property
relations very differently, and asks much more from citizens than simply
for patience while their leaders sort things out….

[FairfieldLife] Rick's interviews with Jim Flanegin

As much as I question Rick's standard in a number of issues I must admit he
does a jolly good job interviewing people.

Seeing his talk with Jim Flanegin it comes to mind how much hatred and
downright envy Jim received from a fellow on this forum.

Is it his Buddhism that drove him mad with envy, or simply the fact that on
his old days he somehow realize that 40 years ago he dropped the only valuable
practice he would ever know ? Perhaps both.

In my humble view Barry, the Turq even if he wanted, would not be able to build
an integrity as Jim Flanegin did in a few years of TM.

Colostrum as we know it is nature's most perfect food. It is a combination of
thousands of compounds designed to work together and quantities designed by
nature to help protect and develop the human body. The Proline-Rich
Polypeptides or PRP’s in bovine colostrum exist naturally in a liquid form.
Using a unique and patented process, these PRP’s are carefully extracted
from natural raw colostrum liquid and package in bottles as PRP spray.
Proline-Rich Polypeptides in colostrum act as transfer factors to passively
transmit immunity from mother to baby.
The Proline-Rich Polypeptide immune spray has to be considered the most
important scientific discovery of our time. Truly, the only substance on the
planet that can passively transfer the immune building factors we all need in
its truest and most effective form is Proline-Rich Polypeptide.

Nope...not going to happen. Look to DUNE and other Sci Fi sources (such as
some of the Star Treks); to observe various economic models of those on the
futuristic earth and other planets. Even in the most austere of conditions,
barter economies will remain (being a primitive type of capitalism). Today in

sanctioned by banks. The exchanges involved trading time (donate your hours of
expertise to the group in exchange for time credits that you can draw upon for

The most advanced system of economics is (of course) in the Feringi planet; all

[FairfieldLife] The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

2010-06-04 Thread Bhairitu
I watched this on Bluray last night and enjoyed it. I've always been a
fan of Terry Gilliam's movies. Unfortunately due to Heath Ledger's
untimely death they came up with a solution to finish the film that I
don't think works as well as they think it does. But I think folks here
will enjoy the film especially with its references to tantra, etc. I
may watch the film again tonight with the commentary.

Since I know there are a number of Netflix users here I see that The
Messengers is now available Watch Instantly in HD. That's the movie
with Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster who is from Fairfield. I may watch
it over the weekend.

Splice opened this weekend but not at my local theater. Not sure what
is up with that but they have a bunch of teen movies playing. Maybe
they went from two 3D projectors to more. I'm not happy about that as I
think 3D is a fad. They're one of the only all digital theaters in the
area (8 auditoriums) and probably updating more projectors for 3D isn't
that much of an investment.

capitalism). Today in the US, barter arrangements are more popular than
ever, some groups even sanctioned by banks. The exchanges involved trading
time (donate your hours of expertise to the group in exchange for time
credits that you can draw upon for the skills of other members).
 The most advanced system of economics is (of course) in the Feringi planet;
all ardent capitalists and skilled traders.

You are right. And bartering does not rape nations or cultures, it simply
fulfills a need of peoples without the need for money.

Which ofcourse is the end of capitalism :-)

I get so fed up with the abuses of capitalism I wouldn't mind seeing it
all go away. Seems like karmic justice. It's easily gamed by
confidence men and so many of the giant megabusinesses operate like
organized crime and probably VERY intentionally. Over the years I've
watched corporate execs adopt whatever they can get away with including
drug dealer oriented business models (very popular in the US, just look
at Comcast cable). And this wasn't from my armchair but sometimes
sitting in a boardroom. It's cutthroat capitalism that needs to be
abolished. Small business is okay but these giant companies are just
dinosaurs behaving like Frankenstein monsters. And they aren't needed
anymore because you can even build a Boeing jet without manufacturing
all the parts (as a recent online report pointed out). These days such
companies assemble parts from other vendors. So you could even have
regional or local car assembly plants, possibly franchised ones.

Barter won't work because it is too inconvenient. People will still
want some convenient medium of exchange. That's why currency came into
being. What you may want to resist is running on totally electronic
funds which they keep trying to sell you in sci-fi movies. Problem is
if they don't like you for some reason you can be shut off and maybe
even starve to death.

Raising chickens has never really been about the cost effectiveness. I have
seven chickens. Raising chickens is for self sufficiency. If the economy
crashes more then we will need to be responsible for our own food. Although you
buy feed for chickens, I think this is greatly over emphasized, afterall, there
are wild chickens who are not given feed daily.Feed stores would have you
believe that you cannot raise chickens without it. I just feed my chickens the
skins from a butternut squash, which they devoured. Eggs may become the new
currency.

With a weekend of work, I turned her into a
 chicken mansion —

I was once married to someone who is bipolar and he has taken meds. for many
years. The crucial point to me was that the patient needs a really good
psychiatrist who can find the right medicine. There have been great advances in
medicine for depression and I'm sure that many of them do not hurt your
experience. When someone is really managing their illness, they know the signs
of a depression comming on and at that point it is more crisis management and
good spiritual experience is not as much the foucs. When in maintenance mode
one can reduce medicines and work closely with a good doctor and have good
experience as well as add other alternative practices to help reduce the
occurence of depression. Russ England is a great psychiatrist/governor in
Fairfield. He is up to date on the advancements. I think the problem for many
is the affordability of a really good psychiatrist. Insurance often pays half
the bill and one visit could be $300 or more.
With bipolar illness, a person may seem very enlightened with the high (or is
it manic depression?)... anyway the mania, or good experience makes it appear
that they are very evolved and nothing bothers them. then depression can set it
and this is very contrasting. My X had his first depression in his twenties. I
think the lack of having prior experience of depression can leave one
ill-equipted to know what to do. I was at a total loss the first time I saw him
go into depression. Education is key to knowing what do to.

Great post.

One thing's for sure, if a person is clinically depressed
(whether as one pole of bipolar disorder, or just by
itself), they're not likely to have much in the way of
good spiritual experiences (if they even have the
motivation to do their practice). So they're most likely a
lot better off taking the medication (if it works), even
if it does interfere with spiritual experiences. If the
practice is effective, it should be doing the person some
good even if it feels flat.

anyway the mania, or good experience makes it appear that

One of the big problems with bipolar disorder, in my
understanding, is that the manic phase feels so good the
person may stop taking their medication, thinking they
don't need it any more. And then the mania is likely to go
completely out of control. It's difficult to get the
dosage balanced so it keeps the person in between mania
and depression.

My X manages his bipolar very well. Because we have kids together and it is
often inherited, we have educated them on the disease. He recently felt the
depression coming on again so he made an urgent appt with his doctor and his
meds were adjusted. His depression improved with the adjustment. With the
advancements in this illness and his good doctor he does pretty well. The
problem again for many is 1. Not having the where-with-all to get to a good
doctor immediately. Had I understood this first time around, I would have
forgotten the stigma of mental illness and got him into a good pschiatric
hospital. 2. the affordability of a PSCHIATRIST. When I hear of someone taking
PROZAC, i squirm. I think it is a generic type medicine. (not sure tho) The
first medicine prescribed to my X, had no affect, then he got onto lithium (21
years ago) and it was like a miracle drug. He could not focus or do any work
due to his depression but after a few days of lithium, he was able to do work.
Being able to focus and do work, at least gave him something to do, other than
think about how terrible he felt. This was the beginning of recovery.

Yes, it was life threatening.
...and maybe still is. The hospital let the young person out this week. The
hospital weaned the person from klonopin over a week's time which I hear is not
long enough time. Then the hospital put the person on new anti-depressants
because of the symptoms of withdrawal.Went to a new doctor the other day,
but for some reason, the young person is not in a de-tox program. It scares
me to think this beautiful person is not getting the proper help.

Xanax detox is a life threatening event, it must be done medically supervised.
One needs to be supervised as one winds down the dosage, there's really no two
ways about it.

From close experience these past few months and this past week, a very good
friend of the family was on Zanax went cold turkey and got seizures so the
doc put the friend on klonopin and a few suicide attempts were had by a young
person in their early 20's. Never before suicidal. The friend said the drugs
make one wish to get out of the body because of discomfort. The friend is an
athiest and does not meditate from any Guru lineage. The weird thing is, at
the psycho ward, the doctors and program kept suggesting he should believe in
God, by their daily prayer circles. When the friend asked the doctor about
meditating, one doctor answered with You mean that Hindu, eastern stuff?
The friend just realized they were all crazy at the psycho ward and now is
trying to find a doctor who can help wean off the pills. The friend's close
family member works in the medical field. It is usually the answer to the
 friend's family.

Does taking Anti-depressants preclude spiritual experience?

Just wondering given the recent experience of exulted experiences and suicide.

Exulted transcendental experiences and depressed. Does taking
anti-depressants also shut off the spiritual experience? Get in the way of
 transcending?

I don't know. I'm just wondering given the recent example. Spiritual
experiences and anti-D's? Anybody got real experience to relate to? Dr.
 Pete, what do you know?

Acedia as spiritual depression, is there a place for anti-D's in spiritual
depression? Should meditators be afraid of taking anti-D's? Anti-psychs?

 Thanks in advance,

My X manages his bipolar very well. Because we have kids

Oh, wow, that must not be real comfortable for any of
you, but you're doing just the right thing.

He recently felt the depression coming on again so he
made an urgent appt with his doctor and his meds were
adjusted. His depression improved with the adjustment.
With the advancements in this illness and his good
doctor he does pretty well. The problem again for many
is 1. Not having the where-with-all to get to a good
doctor immediately. Had I understood this first time
around, I would have forgotten the stigma of mental
illness and got him into a good pschiatric hospital.

 2. the affordability of a PSCHIATRIST. When I hear of
someone taking PROZAC, i squirm. I think it is a generic
 type medicine. (not sure tho)

Prozac is more for plain-vanilla depression, not for
the kind you have with bipolar disorder/manic depression.

But if a person doesn't have a history of big mood swings,
and their first swing is into depression, there'd be no
reason, I don't think, for the doctor to suspect that
it was manic-depression rather than regular depression.
So Prozac may be an appropriate first choice in terms of
the person's history, even if it turns out to have been
the wrong one as the illness develops, if you see what I
mean.

And for regular depression--i.e., with no manic swings--
Prozac does seem to help many people. (It *can* also
help with depression in bipolar disorder, but only if
the mood swings have first been stabilized with lithium
or something similar. Otherwise, Prozac by itself can
trigger mania.)

The first medicine prescribed to my X, had no affect,
then he got onto lithium (21 years ago) and it was
 like a miracle drug.

Lithium is a miracle drug for many with bipolar disorder.
It doesn't work well for everybody, though.

He could not focus or do any work due to his depression
but after a few days of lithium, he was able to do work.
Being able to focus and do work, at least gave him
something to do, other than think about how terrible he
felt. This was the beginning of recovery.

He was fortunate that he found a good psychiatrist, that
lithium worked for him, that he had you supporting him,
and that he has had the self-discipline to stick with his
treatment. It's a really tough disorder to deal with.
Best wishes to all of you, and thanks for sharing your
knowledge and experience.
