Yup. The fact that is does indeed work on your wife’s computer is telling.
I’m still running Sierra due to incompatibility here with APFS and older OS’s
on my network. So I can’t help with Mojave sadly.

Worst-case scenario is that your Jet Direct card is incompatible or toast; but
I kind of doubt the latter. I had a 5100 that lost all ethernet connectivity
following a power outage. I purchased a Jet Direct 635 card from Amazon that
fixed my issue, and it was faster, 1000 baseT versus 100 for the old 615 card.

Did you print a config page and does it print out the Network info Thomas
alluded to? After my power outage, a config page showed now JD card installed,
even tho is was indeed there.

Re: [Finale] Opera Score Order

2019-04-24 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
For all the clients I have done operatic scores, it’s always been according to
the voices, not their roles. Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Basses. If there
happens to be a chorus involved, ala SATB, I have always grouped them
separately, together, under the role voices.

First, make sure to Favor Sharps. Then, using the Selection Tool, select the

With Finale not running, place Robert’s plugin bundle into the Plugins folder.
If you’re on a Mac, this will be in your user folder, Library, under

Re: [Finale] Enharmonic key signature?

2019-01-29 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
I got this to work correctly, but it’s way convoluted. In the staff
transposition dialog, from Score Manager, change the staff transposition to
Other, uncheck Simplify Key, put 9 in the interval field and -10 in the key
alter field. Leave it in treble obviously.

I did this just now in Finale 25 and I got the proper transposition. In
reading the online manual for this dialog, the part pertaining to the interval
and key alter, I got a headache. So I had another cup of coffee and moved on.
Whew!! This should be easier (and maybe it is).

Re: [Finale] Polychord Symbol

2018-08-10 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
One possible view on this would be to attempt to provide a chord symbol that
starts to approach a specific voicing, which a polychord attempts to achieve.
Kind of like writing Bb/G instead of Gm7. This tries to have a triad over an
alternate bass note instead of some hooved-animal player mashing down a 4-part
voicing that might not be what is intended. It’s not a cure-all, and a tad
anal, but it does attempt to go in a specific direction, IYKWIM. I have done
this on rare occasions in the past and it’s a small bit of insurance if you
don’t know your players.

Writing Ab13(b9)/C leaves the player to muck things up dramatically since it’s
a somewhat complicated chord symbol with lots of voicing possibilities.

Just my 2¢

The selections you’re looking for is in the Chord Definition dialog. Select
Alternate Bass in the middle of the dialog and underneath that a popup menu
will then be available. Select Under Root. Don’t worry that Finale calls it
an alternate bass; it’s semantics.

Additionally, you could change the settings for the dynamics already in the
file without having to delete the old ones and reassign new ones. But it’s
tedious; you have to edit each dynamic individually for its positioning and set
it where you prefer. You may also have to tweak the position in you file after
doing this.

Add the high C, then add a B a minor 2nd below it, sharp it, and then change
the B# to a C by using 9 on the numeric keypad.

Re: [Finale] Lyrics positioning

2018-02-09 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
I’m pretty sure lyric positioning is a global attribute. All or nothing. The
only option I can think of is position individual syllables after entering.
Not exactly the best solution if you have many of them. But it is a ‘solution’
nonetheless.

Re: [Finale] Keyboard short cuts for entering numbers

2018-01-18 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
You could do it a couple of ways Martin. Set up numbers as articulations or
expressions and then program the metatools for the appropriate number. I do
this all the time for fingering in students’ pieces. If horizontal alignment
is important, I would use expressions over articulations.

Re: [Finale] rests in parts and multimeasure rests

2017-12-29 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
You can’t get the multimeasure rests in the parts because you used real rests.
Finale is doing what it’s supposed to do.

If I understand your question, you want two different multimeasure rests,
correct? If so, you can edit individual MMR in the part and change it to
another shape you already have. Right-click the measure for the change and
select Edit MM. You can then change the shape. You should already have the
shape created in your file. If you hit the Select button, it will bring up the
default shape in Shape Designer. Not what you want. So delete the number in
the field and then Select. You will be taken to your shape library where you
can select the alternate MMR you want.

I just tried this in Finale 25 and it works on a case-by-case basis.

Hi Barbara,

When I do this in 14.5, using Speedy Entry, in the too many beats dialog, if I
tell it to move the extra notes into the next measure, it does just that. It
only fills the rest of the measure when I exit the Speedy edit pane, not

Re: [Finale] Expressions

2017-06-14 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
This has been a known bug in Finale for years, and I have been bitching about
it at least that long. Somehow, meta tool settings or something gets munged
and no matter what expression you try to enter, you always get the same one.
For me, it’s the last expression I entered, whatever it was. I have been
around this muck with tech support many, many times, and I did finally get them
to admit they were aware of the problem. But that was it.

It used to be that you could quit and reboot Finale and that fixed it. Then it
started requiring a complete Mac reboot. The last time it happened to me that
is what it took.

In earlier versions of Finale I was able to fix it by first making sure I was
saved, and then I ran my hands flat over the keys horizontally several times,
hitting every key. When I then tried to enter an expression, it worked. But
this was back in 2012, 2014, and maybe 2014.5. I haven’t had it happen in v25,
the latest…yet. I do also recall that the last time it happen, this trick
didn’t work. But I don’t recall what version I was in at the time.

Re: [Finale] REPEAT SIGN INSIDE A BAR

2017-03-29 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
Lawrence’s idea is a good one. But you will have to adjust measure numbers
after the fact. Not a big deal tho.

Thanks Lawrence. I’ll have to file this one away for future reference.

Re: [Finale] REPEAT SIGN INSIDE A BAR

2017-03-29 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
I’ve done this occasionally, and the only way I’ve been able to achieve it is
my creating a measure expression and placing it in the file. If it’s a score
with multiple staves, use an expression set for All Staves. It’s a bit of a
kludge, but it does work.

You don’t specify how you entered the two notes, different layers or different
voices. But there is a setting under Document Options > Music Spacing >

You could create a new 8va Smart Shape and change the continuation setting for
them. But then you would have to replace all of them manually. Not fun if

these, but I just checked and couldn’t find a way in.

Re: [Finale] Hiding a staff in part of a piano score

2016-11-29 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
You don’t say which version of Finale, or which platform. But it sounds like a
Hide Empty Staves or Optimized staves situation. If you own TGTools you can
fix it with Staff List Manager.

I had a similar issue with staves not showing up in a file I’d been working on
for a long time. There turned out to be a fair amount of corruption in the
file that no one could fix. I still haven’t fixed it for good, but TGT was my
means for getting things back.

More info on your situation could prove useful.

Re: [Finale] Lyrics word extension through double bar

2016-11-19 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
Wow, I didn’t realize this until I saw your message. I tried it and you are
correct, a double barline does remove an auto word extension. I had to
recreate the extension line manually. And if the extension spans two systems,
and you manually created the extension, it will span the systems.

The current version of TGTools, 2.80beta3 doesn’t create one either.

I’m sorry I don’t have anything better.

Re: [Finale] 11x17 pdf

You could change the part size to 11x17, but something I do all the time with
my student music which is still 8 ½ x 11 since the younger ones tend to lose
one page. What I do is to change the paper size only to 11 x 17, landscape
orientation, and then print 2-up from the print dialog. You then send it to
PDF instead of actually printing. I use Acrobat 9 Pro to open it and then
change the page setup again to 11 x 17, landscape. Print. Works fine on my
system, Finale 2014.5, macOS 10.10 Yosemite. Depending on your system, YMMV.

barline, topmost visible system. Click on the lower handle and you can
selectively move notes horizontally. Just be careful with multi-staved systems.

Is this what you’re asking about?

Re: [Finale] (Not) reducing text expressions

2016-09-21 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
This is another one of those really tedious workflows in Finale. I get around
this by using a macro program called Keyboard Maestro. It basically solves the
issue and only takes moment to program. I’ve even taken this approach when
doing a specific editing routine for a client, even if it meant just for that
session. It saves a bundle of time if you’re repeating this over and over and
I just delete the macro when I’m done.

Something to mull over, perhaps?

Re: [Finale] Double sharp gone?

2016-08-25 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
You don’t say how you’re entering the notes, nor what OS you’re using, Mac or
PC. But, if you use Speedy Entry, place your cursor on the note and hit +
twice, you should get the double sharp. If you still get ‘garbage’, it sounds
like a font issue.

[Finale] Finale 25 test

2016-08-18 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
I installed the demo version of Finale, since MM said it’s fully functional for
30 days.

I opened an opera file that has been causing distress lately. A big file,
7.5mb for Finale, nearly 1400 measures, orchestra and about 24 vocal
characters. Opening the file took a bit less time than Finale 2014 or 14.5.
Saving the file again took about 13 seconds vs about 20 on older versions.

Then I decided to seemingly tax the application some. I tried insert one
measure stack around m26; totally arbitrary. After 11 minutes I force quit the
program. Don’t have time for this shit.

So far, I am not impressed at all. I was hoping 64bit would make a difference,
but not much as far as I’ve gotten.

[Finale] Finale vNext

2016-08-16 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
OK. I’ll get the ball rolling here. Just received my notification that the
last version of Finale is now available. I rarely jump on things right away,
preferring all the rest of you early-adopters to be extended beta testers!

For $149 uprgrade fee, this version, for me, has to be much FASTER, especially
with larger files, all or most of the old, ancient existing bugs expunged (or
close to it), on and on.

Let’s start the discussion folks!

Re: [Finale] Chord question

Raphael poses a good question as to exactly what notes you’re using.

But, if you absolutely need that chord symbol, you’re going to have to create
the chord suffix yourself. It’s not really a standard chord symbol and it
doesn’t exist in any Finale suffix library.

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but I agree with Jon about 2014.5 being an
absolute slug when editing a large orchestral file. I am working on an opera
that ballooned to 7.3MB from 3MB when I converted it from Finale 2012 to 2014.
Everything takes an eternity when editing: changing tools, copying/pasting even
one measure, especially editing lyrics in this file. For me and my current
deadline, it’s completely unusable.

I’m curious if the new 64-bit version that isn’t out yet will remedy some of
this.

Yeah, I forgot about that limitation in Finale, and I wish they’d do something
about it.

What you have to do to make things easier for you is to lay out each example
your want to import into your new document on its own page. Save the Finale

difficult; you just need to plan ahead do to Finale’s limits.

Re: [Finale] Combining text and Finale

2016-04-20 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
I have done this many times in the past. And you’re right, trying to do it in
Finale is a complete waste of time and effort.

I used InDesign but any good writer should work. I exported examples from
Finale as a tif and then imported into the final doc. A while back you could
also export as an Adobe Illustrator file, but that option is long gone and it
probably wasn’t used by many. I think tif is the way to go. Use the Graphics
tool in Finale and you should be fine.

Re: [Finale] Keyboard Maestro question

2016-03-28 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
Hi Chuck,

Which version of Finale? Measure Attributes is greyed out for me if I haven't
selected the measure first, either with the Measure Tool or the Selection Tool.
Did you select a measure before evoking the macro?

I’m using 2014 (not .5) and I probably have my setup a tad different from yours
since pressing the spacebar does nothing for me, but Tab move thru the various
text windows.

Whenever I have to select a checkbox, I make sure to reference from the corner
of the active front window. That tripped me up several times when I first
started in KM.

It does everything and more. The most recent update, v7, added tons of new
features. But, to be honest, most of them are a tad ‘geeky’. But, that being
said, it’s solid, well-written application. You will need to learn its
interface and how it does things, but it’s not a steep learning curve, IMO.

I’d say go for it. There might be a non-crippled trial available for download.
It’s been so long for me I don’t remember.

Re: [Finale] OT Music theory question

2016-03-24 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
Lon is right. Being a keyboard player myself, I’ve always considered this Bb/C
chord symbol as a means to dictate a specific voicing, moreso than C7sus4 or
even C9sus4, which is what the added D infers. Variations of density can be
had by Gm7/C and Bbma7/C. All of these tend to render a specific voicing, and
they are all really just a C11 chord. But if you write that symbol you’re
going to get some earless moron adding and E to the vertical stack, which is a
train wreck. Bb/C is by far the most direct symbol.

Re: [Finale] Score Printing Question

2016-03-24 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
I have to agree with Christopher on 11 x 17 tabloid. I do print a LOT of
orchestra scores here, and I also have the luxury of a coil binding machine,
and it has always worked out fabulously. So ask your questions when
researching a print shop and be sure they have everything they need on hand
without outsourcing from there.

I don’t know NYC, but I did live and work in LA for 21 years. But keep in mind
I left in 2001. There was a great music print shop in the San Fernando Valley
called Valle Music (sic). Before the digital age they were the go-to place for
score printing, binding, and overall supplies. I know they’ve pared back from
that with the onslaught of computers and I don’t know if they’re still around.
They were on Riverside Dr in Studio City, just west of Laurel Canyon.

Judy Green music was another source that might still be around. Like I said,
this was all 15 years ago. Good luck. HTH.

As a possbile workaround: how about applying a Staff Style where you set it
for force collapse. I do this all the time to hide staves in a score where the
measures contain cue notes, thus disallowing hiding since there are actual

Re: [Finale] Finale failings

You’re probably right as to older charts Craig. I’ve seen it before as well,
but not for a long time now. There might also be some fundamental difference
in regions at play here. When I worked in LA, minor 7th chords were written as
Cm7 or Cmi7, where as on the East coast it was notated as C-7. Still that way
Darcy?

I even did a session once where major 7th chords were notated a C7, but with a
French 7 having a small horizontal line thru it. The first run-thru was a
major train wreck for me until I listened and figured it out.

Your polychord example to me would imply exactly what you state. A C triad in
the LH and D in the RH. There would also be the variable of inverting the RH
triad. I would most likely not invert the LH triad, but, ya never know.
Everything is played in context as to style and sound.

Re: [Finale] Finale failings

2016-02-15 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
Darcy is spot on. Polychords are one chord over another, frequently just two
triads, separated by a horizontal line. They can intimate a larger chord form,
but are usually used when a specific voicing or sound is desired. As we all
know, a diagonal line is for an alternate bass note, which again, frequently
points to a specific chord voicing. Gm7/C is really a C11, but if you write
the latter, you’re going to get some moron putting the 3rd in, which conflicts
with the 11 in a dominant 7th chord.

Re: [Finale] how do I delete #1 measures?

2015-11-29 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
Good idea Christopher. But with a large copy paste, it might be a better idea
to copy and Insert to assure all key and time sigs make it over. Copy and
paste is very buggy in all versions of Finale, especially if any tuplets are
involved.

Re: [Finale] Help! Lost place to get scroll spacing in page view again

2015-10-08 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
This may answer your question and help. I go back in forth between the two
view frequently when adding cue notes to a score. What I do in either view is
simply hilight the measure stack by Cmd-Clicking on a measure. Then I hit
Cmd-E to switch views. It goes right to the higlighted measures. This is on a
Mac, but it should be similar if you’re on Windows.

Re: [Finale] Rests

You could use the Move Rests plugin, which is especially helpful if you have a
large range of measure to move rests in. I use it all the time.

Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 145, Issue 23

2015-08-25 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
Hi Jim,

I feel your pain. So much so that I went online, seeming to remember I had
once dl’d the Finale 2012 menu myself for offline viewing. Alas, I couldn’t
find any link. But I did find this which may be of some assistance for you:

Note. You are not required to go online to view the Finale User Manual. To use
the version installed to your hard drive, choose Finale 2012 > Preferences >
Preferences and select Folders. Uncheck Use Online Help if Available and click
OK. The local version does not include all interactive Flash content.

HTH.

The easiest and most direct way to accomplish this is by using Staff Styles.

Re: [Finale] Bb7b4

2015-06-18 Thread j...@thomastudios.com
You’ll need to go into the chord suffix editor, delete the ‘b’, select the 4,
and check the box marked flat. That should get you what you want.
