Skylar has told me in her own way that it is ok. i will be picking her up on August 1st. again. thank you to our entire Fjord family. i have known since early on that Fjords come with an extended family. i am proud to be a part of the celebration of this glorious breed. laurie with livingi...@q.com Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l

Re: Breaking sleigh trail
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com What a beautiful account of a winters day working on the trails! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where it was +30 today: We are Again sending the cold down south! This message is from: Phillip Odden n...@centurytel.net This message is from Phillip Odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where we are experiencing an old fashion winter with all the trimmings. The talk around here, in our rural neighborhood, is about winter. It hasnt let up. If its not snowing its cold. We have a weather pattern referred to as Alberta clippers. The wind blows hard from the east and then south, it warms up a bit, snows and the wind turns to the west and northwest and it gets down right cold. Then again the wind blows from the east to the south and more snow drifting and then cold. My 2 1/2 mile sleigh trails were in pretty good shape before Christmas. Over the past couple weeks they have been drifting over. My personal cutoff for comfortable sleighing is 10 degrees fahrenheit. Well today at 3:00 pm it was 12. So I decided to give my pair of grays a go at grooming the sleigh trails. Oddens Idar is a 6 year old gelding and Oddens Josephine is a 5 year old mare. Both in good shape. They are a matched pair in color, stride and size. In summer time they are a dark steel gray but in their winter coats are a ghostly silver gray with dark black points. They stand about 14.1, are well muscled, calm and have adequate experience so one can feel fairly relaxed handling them. Re: Getting horses to drink in cold weather
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I have no trouble getting horses to drink even when it is -40 here: I have an insulated water tank with a sinking heater which is thermostat controlled. so water is never really cold. They drink fine, even more when they are getting extra hay in the very cold weather Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska where it was a warm +20 today! We usually don't have this problem where I live but I take something we do in very hot weather and also use it when the weather is cold. I know some people are going to laugh and think we are crazy (which is probably not far from the truth) but in my part of Florida, we give our horses Gatorade in the hot weather after work when they have sweated a lot. I add electrolytes to it because the amount of Gatorade we give is not really for electrolyte replacement. After work, we give them an 8 quart bucket with 2 or 3 scoops of the powder. I use the lemon-lime, orange or blue so when they splash it on you, your clothes don't get stained. In the winter, if it gets below 50 at night which is cold for us, they really slow down their drinking so I throw a couple scoops in one of their water buckets at night and the bucket is empty in the morning. corrector pad
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com these are made by Len Brown who designed the Ortho-Flex saddle sand then lost the company. Now he is saying all flex panel saddles are no good and he has the answer. Not! I ordered one when they first came out but sold it as I couldn't see that it could work. Check out all the information on flex panel saddles http://www.hillviewfarms.com/ they make the evolutionary saddles and have a lot of info about the flex panels and the corrector pad. I still like the Ortho-flex saddles, the original ones made in Nevada Mo. Saddle fit is definitely a cause of a lot of behavior problems. Also check out Dave Genedek's website about the horse He Has a great saddle fitting video and makes great western saddles that work! also some special for women. http://www.aboutthehorse.com/ Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska 50 degrees today! pointed out to me that the Corrector Pad has the same weaknesses as a treeless saddle in that it ends up putting pressure on the front and/or rear of the saddle. I have not looked at it recently, but I do not think you can shim along the center of the saddle. My saddle was bridging in the center, though it fit on the front and back. She was able to use shims on the saddle, and/or placed judicious use of particular pads and shims stuck to the felt pad. If you are anywhere near their California/nevada/Oregon territory (maybe they go further afield?), I would have them do a saddle fitting. In the end, I bought a Specialized Trail Lite with an endurance seat because it was more comfortable for me. Even with that saddle, she used custom shims on it. (Specialized saddles come with a shim fit system.) The whole episode made me realize that there are a lot of horse problems that are not only people problems, but also saddle problems. There are a lot of horses out there who have been labelled as resistant who are not. They may just be hurting and being, literally, crippled by their saddles. In fact, I do believe resistant should be removed from a horseman's vocabulary because the word does not carry accurate specific information about a problem and because it is a blame the horse word that I believe is inappropriate. RE: training or disposition?
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com What about the Free Upfeeder with the metal frame on the top? But your barrel idea sounds likeit would be cheaper. Jean in hot and smoky Alaska Cinch Chix 1 inch netting. I use their West Coast Large Bale feeders and cut them in half (to make two shorter nets, with a screw on carabiner type thing closing the bottom of the net. I put the open top of the net over the end of a white 35 gallon barrel, pulling it up like a sock over a foot, but only about 4 to 6 inches up. My husband has taken off the tops and bottoms of the barrel (leaving the rim to strengthen it) before I do this, and he has also drilled 3/8 inch holes in two rows about that I use to tie the netting to the barrel. I end up with an open topped barrel with a net sock hanging about 2 1/2 to three feet down below the bottom of the barrel. We hang this on a pipe panel and put a largish water trough (Rubbermaid, about $75) beneath. We throw a day's ration into the top and let them have at it. They do most of their eating by shaking the nets until the fines fall out. There is something called a Hay Hoop you can buy from KV Supply. They are not as easy to load, and you need a stall wall to mount them on (or a barn wall). They come with a larger hole net, so not as slow feeding, but Cinch Chix nets would fit on them. They are a pretty good solution. Have been enjoying the discussion on fjord disposition, etc.  Reminded me of looking for the one I know own (and adore).  Two years ago, I rode one that was described as a sporty type fjord that  I later discovered had a reputation for being  spooky.  The owner couldnt show him to me because she fell off and broke her arm...     My mare will spook when she is insecure, a little high (loves cooler weather) pushed a little out of her comfort zone...but after experiencing my ex-racehorse spooking, hers usually make me smile .  Kinda slow motion and ending in a freeze and stare.   I enjoy her so much, not just because she is a somewhat typical fjord, but after following these posts I think we are a good match of temperament and experience ...and we become better adapted to each other everyday.  Beth M, Bob, the Corgis and the Fjord Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l
R.I.P STELLA II N-14138 C-120
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Well her time finally came: Stella made it through the winter, barely, but was falling down today, staggering in circles, so it was time to put her down. She was 36 years old, the same age as old Bjarne when he died. We had the second hole dug when we buried Bjarne two years ago, and were finally able to get down there. Dear old Stella, I have been worried every day that we would have to help her get up. She went down and we had to use the winch on the ATV to help her get up. The other day we had to get three neighbors to help get her out of the stall where she had gone down. I knew when I watched her this afternoon that it was time. It is a relief but there is a big hole in my heart. Stella left a legacy through her daughter Anvil's Stina: Lisa Pedersen has most of Stina's offspring: I have Anvil's Adel who's sire is Leidjo. The poem: Dont Cry For the Horses is for Stella this time: She was the most beautiful white horse. * Don't Cry For The Horses, by Brenda Riley-Seymore Don't cry for the horses That life has set free A million white horses Forever to be Don't cry for the horses Now in God's hands As they dance and they prance To a heavenly band They were ours as a gift But never to keep As they close their eyes Forever to sleep Their spirits unbound On silver wings they fly A million white horses Against the blue sky Look up into heaven You'll see them above The horses we lost The horses we loved Manes and tails flowing They Gallop through time They were never yours They were never mine Don't cry for the horses They will be back someday When our time has come They will show us the way On silver wings they will lift us To the warmth of the sun When our life is over And eternity has begun We will jump the sun And dance over the moon A Ballet of horses and riders on the winds to a heavenly tune Do you hear that soft nicker Close to your ear? Re: R.I.P STELLA II N-14138 C-120
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Thanks Jo, I appreciate all of the heartfelt condolence messages, but I do have tears in my eyes. Amazingly there are a lot of old horses here: Maybe because they only work about 6 months of the year, and flies, ticks and many of the diseases like West Nile fever, EPM and Lyme disease are not here. Horses tolerate cold better than heat also if there is plenty of feed and water. But a number of horses did die here this winter, Most when it warmed up after our record cold spell in November. I only hope my other two will live as long and healthy lives as Bjarne and Stella! Jean, In Alaska where snow is finally melting but we have a lot to go! 36 years old. Holy smokes!, must be the clean air up there in your neck of the woods. I find in times such as this, i do not have the correct words. My heart is heavy when i think of the grief this loss must bring to you. Please feel the prayers coming your way from a fellow Fjorder. God bless you. Re: Loose stools
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com There is a product called Ration Plus which I have used with great success: Ration Plus Restores the digestive system to proper balance. Supplies Lactobacillus acidophilus, a natural prebiotic, to the digestive system where it provides vital nutrients to the beneficial bacteria found there. This helps to establish a healthy balance of digestive microflora. As balance is restored, your horse can better utilize his feed, leading to a multitude of health benefits, including weight gain, reduction of stomach upsets and diarrhea, reduction of low-grade ulcers and colic, reduction of hay belly, increased stamina and improved hoof, skin and coat quality. Each bottle is approximately an 80 day supply. A bottle cost about $27, KV vet, Vally vet, etc. Jean in Fairbanks. Re: Skogheims Viljar - white duns, etc
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com And then there is my mare Anvil's Adel: Registered in canada as a white dun, she is very white with no real stripe in her mane, but she does have scattered BLACK hairs in her mane and tail! So is she a yellow dun? or a white dun with a few scattered black hair for a stripe? A faint stripe is discernable in her mane when her mane is cut pretty short and clean...It looks like a pale grey stripe. She has black skin and black eye liner, etc. Her hooves are striped and very hard. I don't know if any of her yellow dun siblings have the scattered black hairs: Lisa Pedersen has several! Adel has 3 siblings that are white dun, three that are yellow Dun (?), although Anvil's Sander is registered as white dun, he has no visible stripe in his mane. So, There are all shades! I have a video showing a stallion in Sweden that looks like a bay, the mane is grey on the outside with a black stripe. His offspring are sll regular brown duns! I love Phil Sponenberg's books on the genetics of color in Horses! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, cloudy , 65 degrees For example, perhaps you've seen red duns whose stripe is so pale that it seems invisible? People have gotten excited and thought that they had a yellow dun. However, if neither of the parents is either uls dun or yellow dun (or a grey who is carrying a hidden cremello gene (rare)), you know the offspring cannot be a genetic yellow dun, although by phenotype it looks that way, it must be genetically red dun. Re: Dun color
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com There was a time in Fjordhorse history when the White duns were popular and breeders were breeding white dun to white dun only to find that that sometimes produced a Kvit, or an all white albino with pink skin and blue eyes. As a result the White or Uls duns fell out of favor and were considered less desirable. One such colored Fjord was produed here in the US when Modellin was bred to a white dun mare. There Was a good article on this in the Small Farmers Journal some years ago. Years ago there were also pinto Fjords and other colors but breeders selected for the dun factor and all Fjords are now some shade of dun. Jean in Fairbanks alaska i hope breeding for color NEVER becomes a breeder's decision. my hope IS that breeders will breed for temperment, disposition, good bones, conformation, you know all the things that make the FJORD such an incredible breed. back 4000 or so years ago when the breed was recognized were there other dun colors? are the colors a man-made color? i am curious , not knowledgable about this. Re: SKIN SO SOFT 2
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I too live in mosquito county, but we don't have the fly problems that folks in the lower 48 have. I had seen the OFF Clip-ons in the store for weeks and had thought they were just another fad, but guess what? THEY WORK! no smell no repellent on your skin, just clip it on you belt, lay it on the picnic table outside, NO MOSQUITOS! I haven't tried it on a trail ride on a moving horse, but I am sure they would work if you were sitting on your horse just standing around, or keep your horse shielded from mosquitos if he was tied to the trailer, etc. I was trying to figure out how to fasten it to my horse while he is in the corral or paddock but I think they would rub it off rolling. I love it! I also keep on at my bedside in case I hear that Bzzz around my head when I am trying to sleep. Give the OFF Clip-on a try! Maybe it repels flies, who knows? Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, 78 degrees today with a couple showers. I have to chuckle when I seen SSS used as a repellent. We used to live only about two miles from the Canadian border on a lake in northern Minnesota, and only were able to watch wonderful Canadian TV(seriously). The Canadians did a test using SSS, another product containing plant derivatives (pyrethrins), and another using 100% deet, which we all know is detrimental to everything, but works, and conducted a test using a person's arm in a mosquito containment box. The best product for mosquitos NOT to bite was, of course the deet, the next was pyrethrins, a chrysanthemum derivative, and the one that was the least effective was the SSS, however, a lot of people swear by the product. I live in a mosquito infested area, and I personally have had the best luck with using a lemon/eucalyptus spray for use on humans. Re: oz the people whisperer
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Laurie, Could it be Oz is picking up on YOUR moods? Maybe that is why hewas depressed too. And when your mood picked up he responded! A couple years ago I broke my foot hopping off Bjorken on our first ride of the summer. (Long story) I tied him to the porch and removed the bridle but left him there for a little while until my friend came to help, and the friend put him away. I didn't see him for a day or two, then my friend told me Bjorken looked depressed and I should go see him, and ultimately he had developed a conditon which looked like colic (but wasn't), vet decided his electrolytes were off, he wasn't eating and drinking etc. It was HOT and smokey so maybe that was the reason...but I went out to help take care of him and he recovered in a couple days...now did he get sick because I broke my foot and didn't see him after I tied him to the porch? I don't know, but I somehow feel there was a connection. Our special animal buddies pick up on our moods and body language for sure. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska cloudy, but not raining! the past couple of weeks oz has been mentally off as well as physically. he wouldn't take gummy bears, he hung his head the minute he was in the cross ties and fell asleep, he was walking slow, etc. the last couple of weeks i have been very depressed about his condition, and trying to make the change to a new barn. i think since i talked to lisa and decided to stay where we are, my mood has relaxed and i have stopped crying at the drop of a curry comb. today i went to the barn to check on him. he's been staying indoors with a fan since yesterday, as are the indoor board horses. i took him to the cross ties for some brushing, let him roll in the arena and then hosed him down. he was very much more alert, holding his head up, and begging for gummy bears and taking them. he just seemed more relaxed and happier. he sticks his head out the stall door and smiles at everyone who goes by. just saying .. laurie, and oz, who really is norwegian and not a southern belle .gonna be 100 here again today Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l
Re: peeing ponies
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com OK, Why do you keep them in stalls? My three Fjords have two large corrals, open at each end so they can use both, and I keep the three together...they will run around the center fence and play and get a lot of exercise. They have a run-in shelter and I have a small barn with one stall where I feed the old mare Stella her mash. But they don't stay in stalls 16 hours a day, even in the winter. Why do you keep yours in stalls in Texas? When I did have the young mare separated in the pen with access to the stall all of the time, she would pee in the shavings in the stall in preference to outside on the ground where it would splatter her legs! In the winter this was a real problem as the frozen shavings and ice would build up! I used to put shavings in the run-in shelter too, but they would pee in there too with a build-up of frozen shaving in the winter, so I quit that. If you keep them in stalls with a run-in why not have rubber mats in the stalls with no shavings and they would not pee in there. Ask Lisa Pedersen how she Trains her fjords not to pee or poop in the stalls... Jean in rainy Fairbanks, Alaska..but there is no smoke from fires here! Its funny with horses/ponies, all have their fav. spots to pee and seems the girls even where they poop. I'd found the geldings kind of not so particular. My Lang I had was a good boy, if he had access to outside, he'd rather go outside, leaving his stall clean. Another fjord gelding I'd had for a bit, was the same way, would keep the stall clean and step outside into the sand. Which sometimes was an issue too, always using the same spot over and over, it becomes a bit much for the sand to handle. So we'd have to removed heavy stinky wet sand, digging to the ground and then add more sand. Re: peeing ponies, keeping horses in stalls
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com My concept of a stall is what we do in Alaska: a well insulated barn or maybe a log barn, insulated roof, etc, with an enclosed stall, 10X12 or10X12, etc, mine has two doors, most here in a barn with multiple stalls had one door opening onto an inner isle, all built for warmth, etc in the winter. But In Texas and Arizona and other warm states I've seen pictures of stalls that are made of pipe panels with a roof over them to allow breezes and air circulation. So my thinking is I don't want to keep my horse in a stall like we have here in Alaska any more than necessary, let them out to enjoy the weather when it is nice, not much of a fly problem here, very few days that are warmer than 80 degrees, etc. They need to move around even in the cold winter. Stalls are convenient for the horse owner, horses stay cleaner, etc. but I think it isn't great for the horses to be isolated and kept in a small space for 12-16 hour of their day. better that they are out moving around, in a small herd situation. Just my thoughts. Jean in Alaska, where I can watch my three Fjords playing, sleeping on the ground, or dozing together, somewhat dirty from rolling in the dirt, but happy. I think itâs a personal choice if one stalls, part time stalls, full time, pasture board with run ins, pasture board with trees. Everyone has their way of doing it, its what works for them and their horses. Horses are pretty much creatures of habit. I don't believe that the best for them is out 24/7 but I'm fine with those that do think that. In Texas, its HOT, when it gets in the 100's and stays there, no breezes, no rains, nothing should be out in it. I've seen many of the great dairy farms with the HUGE pasture waterers running them on their cows while out in pasture. And they too stall them with fans blowing and fly spray control. If the beef cows have access to ponds, thatâs usually where you will find them. Re: Ringbone, again + again. . .
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I don't believe any of the Leidjo/Stina, Stella and Line related Fjords have had any Ringbone problems. Lisa Pedersen has most of the Leidjo/Stina offspring and I don't believe they have had any lameness issues nor has Leidjo at age 29. My 35 year old mare, Stella II, who's dam is Line and Daughter Anvil's Stina, has never had any lameness issues, nor has her son Bjorken, now 25(sire: Anvil's Rikolv) Old Bjarne (C23) might have had some ringbone as He had a hard swelling on the front of is rear pasterns, but his shoulder issue was more of a problem. He had a very hard life before I got him. His grandfather on both sides was Stolmann C1 and both his Grandmothers were from Denmark. It would be interesting to look through the lineage of Fjords with and without Ringbone issues to see the genetic relationships. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, more rain showers today, but warm and sunny in between. We've sent our Firefighters down to the fires in the lower 48! So, according to my vet, if it is not in the joint, it's probably inherited. Folks, I truly think this is an issue with this breed. I have said so before and of course here I am saying it again; if you don't believe me, take a look at how many different times ringbone has reared its ugly head in the Fjord List archives. Alot. And this is a very small amount of horses really. The horses that I own or owned that were affected by this are: Thyri, Alycia and now Idelle. Look 'em up in the Pedigree site. Thyri is Alycia's dam. Idelle is unrelated. To date none of Sven x Jorunn's progeny have had a hint of lameness issues. Re: tacky Tack, saddle pads
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I have been using the Syn-felt pads for years...they are synthetic but feel soft and do wick the sweat: My horse's back will be dry all over after a ride. I use the 5/8 pad under my western Ortho-Flex saddle, I do have the 1 also. They can be washed, hose off, and vacuumed. You can trim them to fit English saddles, etc. Description from KV-Vet: http://www.kvsupply.com/KVVet/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=92506gift=FalseHSLB=Falsemscssid=DA8132C315244FD18577B8D0AA5CB7F8 Syn-felt makes the perfect pad or blanket liner. It is very absorbent and cushioning and will resist saddle slipping. 30 x 30. Withers will shape to fit! Absorbent Syn-Felt holds up to four times its weight in moisture, conforms to horses back, maintains shape and density and resists slipping. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, longest day of the year: 21h 49m possible sunlight, 24 hours visible light, 78 degrees today! PS My saddle pads are all the dressage type, made of cotton, and get thrown into the washing machine on a regular basis. The referenced article talks mostly about the variety of synthetic materials used in the manufacture of the thicker western-type pads. Re: New member/owner
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com How big are these flakes? I give my fjords 1 flake each three times a day, plus a little Safe Choice Special care for the younger ones (about 2/3 lb/day) and the 35 year old mare also get 5 lbs senior feed per day. I feed Brome grass hay, Bales average 73 lbs. each and last 2 1/3 days for one bale to feed 3 fjords, or about 12 lbs hay each/day (I estimate) for the younger Fjords as the old mare doesn't eat as much hay. The new Nutrena Safe Choice Special Care feed is great for the Fjords as it has very low starch, but adequate supply of vitamins and minerals, great for insulin resistant horses. All I do is cut back very little at a time on the grain. I give him three flakes of hay in the am. and three flakes in the pm. I think it's the grain that tends to put on the xtra weight. Re: New member/owner
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I wouldn't ride with a saddle that pinches and leaves white spots...it could do permanent damage and affect her behavior and bonding with you! Causing her discomfort when you are just getting to know her could affect her attitude long time. I know how hard it is to take weight off these guys. You may be able to use shims with the saddle pad and saddle to even out the pressure, or if you have a wider saddle, use a thicker pad with that saddle. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, sunny and 75 degrees. light all night now! I'm currently going through a saddle fitting saga with my Sparrow but have recently learned she's carrying a bit more weight than she did several years ago so getting in shape may fix my tree size problem. I am curious if the list has any suggestions - while working to get weight off/back in shape and leaner, would you ride in the closest thing you've got even if it still pinches, or would you continue to look for a saddle that will fit correctly now but may not work later if she loses the weight? Re: Hay
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I guess we aren't so bad off here in Alaska, I can store 400 73 lb bales in my hay barn and have it's good even the next year! After delivery and paying a crew to unload and stack it it ran about $14-15/bale last year! Farmers grow Brome grass and Timothy hay here, also oats and Oat hay and Barley and barley straw. Jean in sunny Fairbanks, Alaska, where leaves are coming out, hills turning green! 18 1/2 hours possible sun, 22 1/2 hours daylight! Hooray! Here we just get whatever we get and if you don't have air conditioning for your hay in the summer, you can't keep it long. I have a little air conditioner in my hay room so I can keep hay for a long time and kind of stock up but nothing compared to people in cooler climates who can buy hundreds of bales at a time. I think I can fit about 60 in my little feed barn if I really stuff it full. Re: Feed for obese fjord
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com How big is a flake? The size of the flakes differ from bale to bale here, but currently one average 73 lb. bale lasts 2 1/2 days for 3 fjords with old Stella getting 6 lbs senior feed/day as well as hay. I'd guess about 12 lbs hay each for the younger fjords. And I thought hay was expensive here! Probably about the same right now at the feed store as yours, but was $350/ ton at the growers last summer or about $12.50/ 70 lb bale. Heaven knows how much THIS summer! I feed grass (Brome) hay. BTW, How did you get her exact weight at 1078 lb? LOL Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where green-up has started, hills turning green, but with a red flag fire warning! 60 degrees today! I feed my 1078-pound fjord mare a flake of grass hay morning and evening with 3 pounds of grass hay at noon. Re: horses and getting older
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Debby, Funny, I guess I have the ADVANTAGE of never having been married, got my first horse at age 50, now in my 70's, no family to help with them but GOOD close friends who are more than family, interested in horses, have horses also, I am like my friend's mentor. I essentially started over, retiring from my job with Alaska Fish and Game at 50. my job was also my social life so it was a big adjustment, but I joined the horse community and finally got what I'd dreamed about my whole life: Horses! Debby, go with YOUR dream and don't give up the horses, go find a dressage/driving group, a horsey town, LIVE your dream! You are quite young yet, you have lots of years to enjoy your horses! I know there are others here on this list who have done this, I could even give you a couple names, but maybe they will speak for themselves. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where I heard thunder for the first time this spring! This message is from: Debby debby.s...@earthlink.net I'd been the one to ask this question. I've lost too many ponies in the 30yrs. of having them. Some I've held on to too long as I wasn't strong enough to let them go. Some I had no choice. Kept them out of pain until the vet could put them down. Either way, its hard. For me itâs the most grief, compared to losing family members. Maybe some won't understand that statement. But I've not much family, lost a lot of them, and truth is, my ponies were who I went to when the human family members caused me pain and sadness. Humans can be so mean. Horses are honest. Its like someone said, give and get respect and along with that comes love, unconditional. Some of us haven't much choices now as we start getting some age on us. Some have health, some have family who no longer what to deal with the horses, want them gone. Some have left us alone to deal with it. A lot is economics, losing ones home. With me its moving on by myself, at 58yrs. of age and wondering whats the right thing to do. Re: horses and growing old
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I kept old Bjarne for about 8 years beyond his serviceable years: He had arthritis, needed joint supplements and pain relievers (Devils claw and Yucca) as well as senior feed to keep his weight up. He finally died of Kidney failure at age 36. He was the most expensive horse to keep, yet I could not do otherwise! I still have old Stella, age 35 this year: She gets senior feed and hay, doesn't seem to be suffering from arthritis, but I do not ride her, would only put a small child on her. She is in great shape: I will keep her to the end also. I can watch my horses from my front window, watch them play, and watch them all stretched out on the ground sleeping in the sun. I can smell the horsey odor of manure thawing in the spring warmth and will soon get out on my little tractor and clean up the corrals (when they have thawed and dried out enough.) My Fjords whinny and nicker when they see me and nuzzle me when I feed, it gets me out in the mornings and gives me a purpose for the day even when it is -30 degrees! A friend here with two fjords called me in February crying because her husband wants to get rid of their fjords as the winter chores are becoming too much..I told her I and close friends would take them and give them a good home and she would still be their owner and could come see them anytime. I guess we are crazy, but I would feel terrible to see those two Fjords go to bad homes. What do we do with unwanted horses in Alaska? Well, the dog mushers will take them and that is usually a humane end, also they will take a horse that dies if they do not have a lot of drugs in them. We can euthanize our horses and bury them on our own property here. Some friends have buried 5-6 horses on their property over the last 30 years. But there are a lot of old horses here, passed along to younger kids, loved and cherished. It is expensive to bring horses up here, so maybe that is why there are so many old horses still around1 Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, sunny but cool this morning: will get to 55 degrees today. Yet some are casually passed along like a disposable appliance, from pillar to post. If you can no longer keep your horse, because of the three-D's (death, displacement, and divorce) make double darned certain they land well in their new circumstances. (not in a slaughter house). Even if you have to give them away. effects of acidic drinking water on horse health
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Interesting discussion and information on how pH of drinking water can affect a horses health and energy! http://esiforum.mywowbb.com/forum1/975.html Dr. Deb Bennett: When horses are compelled to drink water that tests acid, they will have difficulty absorbing minerals and electrolytes from the gut, as well as certain nutrients and vitamins. This unbalances many body systems, and will commonly result in cow-flop poos and other problems such as tying-up and exercise intolerance/fatigue after exercise. On the other hand, water that is too alkali can also be harmful. What you want is for your animals to be drinking water that pH-tests just a little on the alkali side of neutral. Neutral pH is 7.0, so you want the water to test from 7.25 to 7.5 on the pH scale. RE: Ring Bone
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com So do you think there may be a genetic connection to early arthritis in some Fjords? Maybe it doesn't get noticed as much due to their stoic nature! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, Where spring has finally sprung with temps in the high 30's to low 40's and it is going to get MESSY! It has been a LONG, COLD WINTER! )Personally, through being involved in this breed for quite a while (20+ years) as a breeder and in observing and listening to other owners/breeders, I have a nagging suspicion that in our fjord horses, there are many who are afflicted with arthritic changes, some very early on. As a layperson I am certainly not qualified to nail it down one way or another as to genetics/enviroment+use, but I bet if there were a way to anonmously report on this, say through an online survey, the numbers might be significant. This may sound wierd, but I have thought it would be very interesting to do on-site, digital x rays of the lower leg at an evaluation - again anonymously, but have a radiologist(s) take a good look at them and give an opinion to the Eval Comm.Back to the real world now. . .Karen in central Oregon Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH-L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l

Re: fjord blood values
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Cheryl, My Fjords have always had low red blood cell counts, and I believe that is normal for them. I have a reference somewhere that gives RBC averages for various breeds and draft horses generally do have low normal levels. Keep in mind that Red Blood Cells are stored in the spleen and when the horses is excited or puts out a greater effort in exercise (race horses, for example) the spleen supplies extra red cells. If the blood sample is taken when the horse is excited quite likely the Hematocrit will be a lot higher than when he is calm. From an article in THE HORSE: Many racehorse trainers rely heavily on repeated measurements of certain blood parameters for assessment of fitness and readiness for racing. In particular, red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, and packed cell volume (all indicators of the horse's capacity to transport oxygen in the blood) are measured on a routine basis. While it is true that exercise training is associated with small increases in these indices, resting values for red cell count and hemoglobin concentration cannot be used to assess fitness and are unreliable for prediction of the horse's capacity to transport oxygen during exercise. Up to one-third of the horse's red blood cells are stored in its spleen; this red cell reservoir is pumped into circulation at the onset of exercise, providing a tremendous boost in oxygen-carrying capacity. Thus, only blood samples taken during exercise can serve as a reliable indicator of total red cell numbers. Hope this helps! Jean in balmy Fairbanks Alaska, will be +30 again! Hi List My fjord gelding had a routine blood panel drawn with his wellness visit. To the vets and my surprise, his red blood cell count was a bit on the low side (RBC 5.66) which she considered borderline anemic (normal 6.18-9.53). Re: fjords
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com About the Fjord Neck: All horses have Seven Neck vertebrae! Long necked horses just have longer vertebrae, Fjords have shorter vertebrae! actually that may make their neck easier to bend! The giraffe has 7 vertebrae, also I believe,. It is the muscling on the Fjord neck that makes them so strong...But trained right they can do it all: Oh, not EVERY Fjord can do everything as some are more athletic than others, some are more drafty, etc, etc. Look for good conformations, a middle of the line model, not too drafty not too light boned, general purpose style! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where the sun is shing and it IS warming up! about -20 at mid day And that neck on these fjords, once they know they have that, itâs a hard thing to take control of. I was fortunate in that Lang never used his neck nor grabbed the bit. Amber, when she was younger and her stifle mended, she knew she had that strong neck, and she used it against you. She is the sweetest on the ground and loves to give and get love, but on her back, she gets spooked or scared, or even just decides she is going back to the barn, itâs a struggle. Ynde, she could be that way, but I learned to watch her eye when lunging her on the lunge line, and to always keep her close in a certain area, always a step ahead of her thinking, as they are a thinking animal, they have to be. I think its the nature of the horse, all horses have to stay a step ahead, its called surviving. I guess thatâs where we have to hope we can earn their trust, and its not always easy. Re: fjords vs others
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com The gal who trained Bjorken and Adel trained big warmbloods and thoroughbreds for dressage. She was really scared of the power my Fjords had, said she could easily muscle the other horses she trained, but was scared of the powerful neck and all over power of the fjords should they decide to take off on her! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, -50 degrees, and thick icefog, zero visibility in town. Then I also pay a girl to help me keep my horses exercised. Twice a week she comes here to ride my horses with me; 2 Fjords and 1 QH. My older QH is retired. Last week I asked her if she would want to own a Fjord if she could. The answer was a resolute NO!! She loves the quiet disposition of my Fjords but would still prefer Glider, my youngest QH. When I ask her why, she can't really explain. She thinks it has something to do with their strength, both mentally and physically. There's a little bit of fear I guess for the enormous power that a Fjord represents, sitting there right under your but. A little Hummer in stead of a Volkwagen. The vet put a drain in the incision and I flushed it daily for two weeks until there was no longer any bacteria present. A drain would probably be helpful since it recurs when it closes up! they foreign object may well be a splinter of wood which would not show up on x-rays! Jean This message is from: Gail Russell g...@zeliga.com We have a horse who stopped eating, and had a huge ulcer under his tongue, plus an abscess that opened and drained under his jaw, with the channel for the abscess going forward, toward his nose, toward the base of his tongue. We treated for over a month. The abscess channel was big enough that I could put my finger up to the second joint into the channel. I could feel bone on either side of my finger. All of the other tissue had been cleared out by the abscess. We thought we had him well, but he relapsed as soon as the abscess healed over. He is at the vet's now, awaiting anesthesia tomorrow AM to thoroughly examine his mouth and tongue, and then, probably another round of antibiotics. We found he needed antibiotics for anaerobic bacteria to get whatever the bug was. They X-rayed him today and could find no sign of metal foreign objects. They also did a barium injection into the abscess to see where the pocket went to. Experience and advice appreciated. The vets are trying, but are stumped. This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com When I was a kid growing up outside of Cleveland Ohio, we sometimes had summer temps of 95 degrees and 90% humidity...they didn't talk about heat index then, but that would have been 150! Unbelievable! I used a chart: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/resources/activities/bison/seasons3.phtml Jean in sunny and comfortable Fairbanks, Alaska, 70 degrees, 45% humidity today In the article she mentions the heat index as a base to see whether your horse is in danger of heat exhaustion. This morning the humidity was 97% and the temp was 73, total that together and you get 170 as a heat index. This is way too uncomfortable for me and the Fjords. Yesterday they spent the day in our barn, cool and out of the heat and the bugs. We did not have a fan going because the barn is situated to catch any breeze that comes along. None of the horses were sweating, just standing in their stalls. RE: 5 1/2 western bit?
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I have both the Myler butterfly driving bit and the elbow driving bit with the solid low wide port mouthpiece and my Fjords love them... tried the 6 elbow bit with their jointed roller barrel mouth, and, yes it was too squiggly for Bjorken. I like the shape of the solid mouthpiece., can get them in about any size, draft sizes from Big Horse Feed and Tack Jean in rainy (again) Fairbanks, Alaska, where today's rain makes 4. STOP ALREADY! Bonnie, I agree w/ Jo, Myler bits are pretty size accomodating - my mares go very well in thier med port curbs, but I don't like their independent or multi-moving bits where the cheek and shanks each move separately. Too many confusing signals. My dear old broke-to-death in the bridle stallion Sven HATED that squiggly Myler bit (custom made driving bit). He just about sat down on me in protest. Guess I am old school, but the loose jaw (shank) is about it for me. As for a shanked snaffle, IMO, yuk. I would avoid this type of bit entirely. This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I agree! It ain't fair! We have been melting here, water running, fjords muddy, etc and yes, still a couple feet of snow in the woods, then I woke up to 2 new snow today, and warnings about hazardous driving on all major highways, with 1-2 ft. new snow and high winds in the mountains between here and Anchorage. And I thought maybe spring was here, roads were finally getting rid of all that ice and were pretty dry, my driveway melting off nicely, now snowy again...Darn! This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com it is just this particular show R5Sons Alaska ( I think it's called that). I am sure you can access their web page and decide for yourself; it's just not my cup of tea the way they go about promoting themselves and their lodge, again for reasons not really concerning this List. Well, it's a lot better than the Gold Rush show where a bunch of loser guys from Oregon come up to Alaska to make their fortune gold mining, forgetting about permits, regulations, and common sense! shooting a bear that wandered into camp, tearing up streams, etc. Or Sarah Palin's Alaska, where the Palin family shows how the rich live in Alaska, with their big motor home, big mansion on the lake, flying in Helicopters to a glacier , or rafting a wild river, all beyond the pocketbook of most of us. . As for Fjord related stuff in Alaska check out Sarah Donchi's web site: Funny River Outfitters: http://www.funnyriveroutfitter.com/ Now here is an opportunity for some good times with Fjords: guided trail rides, wilderness horse packing, transportation for hunters and campers, and carriage rides. Re: Fjord Feeding Now
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I have two Fjords that are 33 and 35 years old and to keep weight on them I have to feed them Nutrena Senior Life, about 5-6 lbs daily to Stella, 33 and about 4-5 lbs to old Bjarne, 35. Both started to lose weight dramatically about age 28 when on the mostly brome hay only diet, and my farrier suggested I feed the Senior feed as they weren't able to get the nutrients out of the hay like they did when they were young. I now feed the senior feed plus joint supplements and about a cup of Omega Horse shine, a stabilized flax supplement and I feed it wet, as a soft mash. Both had their teeth done by a good horse dentist, and still have all their teeth, but they are worn down pretty well, but they still eat hay very well. The dramatic improvement in their condition when I added the senior feed make me hopefull that they may live a few more years! Old Bjarne already has a beautiful thick coat, as he has always started to shed his summer coat the day after summer solstice and now has a coat thicker than some fjords down south ever get. When it is extremely cold here I increase the hay, but not the senior feed. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, 45 degrees today. I might mention that we NEVER feed sweetened grain either, which is the equivalency of feeding children a steady diet of candy. (junk food) Plus, sweet grains mold very easily, and moldy grain, or hay, can be DEADLY for a horse. Sometimes the grain appears okay as the mold is not yet discernable! We do occasionally feed straight oats, youngsters, working, elders, but not routinely for every Fjord. Nature's fare, and exercise, is usually always better, as we humans are discovering more and more. RE: Stalls or turnout
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Phil Odden posted: As I travel around the country looking at Fjords I see quite a few that are far too heavy. It takes effort to keep most Fjords in proper shape. The easiest thing to do is to just let them eat all they want. Many people do not want to have the weight of a ridder on their horses until they are fully mature and I agree. But they are willing to have their young stock much overweight so that the young Fjords are carrying far too much weight for their immature bones and connective tissue all the time. I was at Libby one year and proudly showing photos of my 3 year old tall gelding to a well known Fjord person and was surprised when she commented on how thin he was: was he sick, she asked? he is so thin! THIN? Well he didn't have a big belly and was tall and lanky, but no ribs showed! He was growing! He grew to 15-2, is now 23 and never had a lame day. His mom is a slimmer type, too. This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com You're feeding Strategy and oats? How much? Just curious! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska overcast and a bit of smoke, 70 degrees I find it curious too, that my new vet who was into Arabian horses in his past, thought my fjords could stand to lose a little weight (cut back on their Strategy and skip the oats), when the following week my experienced horse friend who rides Hanoverians met my mare (the chubbier one) and offered her unsolicited appraisal that Mirakel looks like a good weight. RE: thunderstorms, turn out, stalls, caution, etc.
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Define turnout! I consider my Fjords turned out 24/7 because the four are together in a very large dry paddock as I only have a small one acre pasture and a smaller paddock with a little grass. They wander around together in the dry paddock, head for the run-in shed when it rains hard, and may get 2-3 hours in the one acre pasture in the summer. They are not kept in stalls, except the seniors (33 and 35) get to eat their bucket of senior feed mash in the stall for maybe 1/2 hour. they move constantly, except when they are dozing in the sun. I don't stall even in the winter with temps as low as -40-50 degrees, but they will stand together in the shelter which raises the temperature at least 10 degrees. Fluffy? well, yes, a bit! Jean in Fairbanks, still 20 hours daylight, will be 75 degrees today Hey Eric, great thoughts! Ditto on hobbles from over here...just wondering though, how do you keep your Fjord from fluffing up if it is on permanent turnout? Mine are out 5 hrs daily and they are quite, um, fluffy... Stellalite?
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Is Stellalite the horse you are talking about? BTW, How is Sander doing, did you get any Pics? Can you send me the picture of him that you posted on BAEN When he came through? Oh, another thing, Ray Hunt is dead, so are the Dorrances. Who is coming to Colorado in May? Buck Brannaman? Jean That horse is an absolute softy compared to the horse I am retraining and even with her I do not have to go to that extent and never will, as I have stopped sat back and thought laterally about what would be the best and most harmonious way to achieve what I need from her. Just because its not written in your system dosent mean the horse should suffer in the slightest for the good of the lesson plan. h Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f
retractable lunge lines
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I HAVE a retractable LUNGE line for horses, bought some years ago, I don't remember where I got it. Haven't used it in years, tho. Jean in Fairbanks, Alasak , light snow and +5 was +35 yesterday! And on another note. I use one of those retractable dog leashes for lunging. I have the largest heavy duty one that only cost $20 or so. I never could keep from getting tangled in the extra lunge line, so now I just reel her in or reel her out as needed. Re: young ones and old ones
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com I wonder how old the oldest living Fjord is now? I have old Bjarne, registered C23 in the Canadian registry, he is 35 this year. My mare Stella II, N-14138, C-120 is 33 this year. What is the oldest registered in NFHR still living? Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, +40 today Mike sent Thor's registration papers from Bauer's registry. Thor is my big old boy that I thought was 30 and turns out to be a young 25. No more sympathy on the poor old pony routine. Why, he is a youngster! Bjorne, (D) Thor's older brother would be closer to 30. Bjorne was always the leader, I loved him alot, all the escapades he took me on, and he loved to jump and get Thor into trouble. Thank you, Mike. Hope Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f
Re: White star on white fjord ?
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Hi Bonnie, Most of the white duns have a very light tan or cream color on their faces, darker towards their muzzle, so I think a pure White patch of hairs would be noticed if you looked real hard. The forelock might cover it, however. White duns aren't really pure white, either, more of a wool colored or cream color. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, +10, partly cloudy today This message is from: morrisshado...@aol.com White Star Hi Patti I have a white Fjord Ironwood Lordalen and I was wondering how you can see a white star on a white horse that does not have pink skin? Is it not just the white hairs from being white? And not really a white marking? Just wondering. Re: fjordhorse-digest V2009 #219
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com My question is why wasn't there a salt block available before now? I alwaly keep a salt block available. I use the Trace mineral without selenium or a white salt block, as old Bjarne eats a lot of it and too much selenium isn't good, but I feel salt is necessary to keep them drinking ENOUGH water. It may be that he was salt starved, and so has been eating a lot of it, but with it available all the time will moderate his intake. Jean in Fairbanks, ALaska, -29 tonight, thank you, linda. it's a block in a feeder, so he can only reach the top. there are two other horses in the pasture with him. he's obviously been licking, but i will certainly keep an eye on him. he seemed to get over it the first time, so maybe it's just because it's new. it's not loose salt, which at least will be easier to monitor. laurie Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f
