My memory is slightly wrong - I did do an advert as you describe using Flash
and the technique was as I explained, but the flash html publishing
properties were set so that the dimensions were 'match movie' (I remember
that the actual move stage was larger, but the only movie on the timeline
was using a mask for the content).

I think the movie is always at the full size, but has a transparent
background. Then you just mask the contents and change the size of the
mask..

We will cover hands on labs from scratch:

* Setting up the SDK
* Warm up: 2D Motion
* 3D Primitives
* 3D Math
* Materials
* Make a complex objects (Collada)
* Interactions
* Shadows/Reflection
* Flash 10
* Calling a remote (web java/data ) service

This is an intensive all day class stressing techniques useful for
gaming and traditional 3D. You will walk out comfortable creating
simple 3D games or a Rich UI Web site.

You must provide your own laptop, over 1 GB ram recommended. Power
will be provided for each laptop. We will mail you class prep

My suggestion would be to follow flex in a week on the adobe site, then
you'd know most of the answers to these these questions. For the moment I
think you're trying to run before you've got to grips with walking.

The curly bracket syntax is for compile time declaration only where the
compiler knows all of the values at the time of compilation. In your example
variables are involved so the compiler gives you an error.

Generally speaking the variable equivalent of

var o:Object = { x: 1234};

would be

var o:Object = new Object();
o.x = 1234;

your code is trying to have the variable name as a vaiable itself, so the
equivalent would be:

o["x"] = 1234;

var variableName:String = "x";
var variableValue:Number = 1234;

o[variableName] = variableValue.

I'm rather suspicious of your XML handling code, but I won't go there!

Something like this perhaps..

I'm assuming that the reason for the margin is to leave a gap around the
edges. Lets say you want a 5 pixel gap.

add other stuff here

Any good?

Maybe I've got the wrong idea about why you want the margin.

Re: [flexcoders] web compiler

2008-10-17 Thread Paul Andrews
If there isn't a mechanism for caching the compilation result (user requests
mxml, but actually gets html/swf), performance in a production environment
would be appaling. That wouldn't matter for development.

But you'll only do the compile once for each release, not once for each
request... it can't be as important as the calls that application actually
makes.

  Hold on a minute. Canvas uses absolute positioning. So "padding" would only
affect percentage resizing? And 0,0 would still be top left corner, regardless
of the padding?

  This seems kind of confusing. I'm with Tim, and think this would be better
solved with constraints. I suppose you could declare Spacers of height="100%"
and whatever width you wanted, and position them with constraints.

  Another alternative, if you have to use a Canvas and don't want to
  subclass, is to use constraints (top, bottom, left, right) on the
  children.

  How about write a custom item renderer and expose a public property "state"
name it however you want. Bind that property
  to the current state of your custom component. When the parent state changes,
the item renderer wil update also.

Very neat idea. Thanks for that.

Sometimes you just know there's a dead simple solution out there..

  I want to do some load testing and that's why iam using .mxml files. Its Flex

Flex compiles .mxml files into classes and ultimately a .swf file. Out of the
box Flex 3 doesn't support dynamic compilation from a web browser, so how is
that set up?

I don't really understand what trying to run mxml files through a browser has
to do with load testing.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: My Flex Form - please help

2008-10-16 Thread Paul Andrews
I completely missed out the fact that the sendMyData() function in the main
application refers to fields ( currently with no id) in FormComp, so there
are two reasons why, for example, Name.text, cannot be found:

The TextInput field has no id and should have an id 'Name' - I already
mentioned that.
If the field had an id it would be in the FormComp component, not part of
the main application. FormComp is in the main application but again has no
id. Even with an id you are trying to access fields inside the class that
are not public.

The real problems are coming from a lack of understanding of scope and the
relationship between classes/components.

Paul

Re: [flexcoders] Re: My Flex Form - please help

2008-10-16 Thread Paul Andrews
A quick look.

You have in sendMyData::

obj.Name = Name.text;
   obj.Email = Email.text;
   obj.Message = Message.text;

Yet FormComp has:

None of the form fields has an id..

Also,

shows a click handler function "sendMyData()", yet there's no function
called that in FormComp. sendMydata() is part of the parent application. You
can probably get away with referring to Application.application.sendMyData,
but that's really bad practice.

The coupling of these components is really not as it should be try and build
components that can be used standalone without having to refer directly to
what is happeining outside. The formComp shouldn't be accessing a handler in
the parent application.

The form should dispatch a custom event saying that the form has been filled
in and that event should include a payload of the form content. The
application should listen for that event and despatch a message using the
event payload.

I would suggest recapping some of your classes.

Paul

I always treat events as asynchronous - I don't see how else you can deal

Making a slide show type program is fairly easy.

> What do you think?

LOL depends what you mean by "nice".

The strength of powerpoint is in laying out screen components on a page with
good control over their appearance and the availability of canned
transformations and effects to add interest. That coupled with an ability to
use layout templates and control how a presentation plays back and can be
printed out makes Powerpoint what it is.

Replicating all that in Flex is a lot of work. Making something similar is
certainly doable. Making a tool that does a targetted subset of that is very
doable, but it won't be powerpoint.

Most of the thread has concentrated on converting powerpoint slides to run
in flash, which is a completely different proposition from making a
powerpoint-like tool in flex.

What exactly are your goals here?

Maybe, but big spaceship does some great flash stuff, so maybe they're
looking for someone with skill besides flash but not excluding flash.

The OP didn't word the request too well. I think he's looking for PHP and
Ajax/javascript skills. I wouldn't be surprised if a few flash coders with
those skills wouldn't mind getting their foot in the door there.

  Hello,

  I'm working on a flex application and i've an issue with the repeater control.
  In my application, i fill my component when i get some datas from my
httpService component.

  I have to get every component of my application and go find its prolly value
in the datas.
  I do that because whe i have a list the datas for the list arent well
formatted.

  The problem that i have with the repeater is that the getChildren() method of
the Container class doesn't count the repeaters as a child of the container.

  I found that in the Container class there is a mx_internal get méthod named
childRepeaters that'd solve my problem, but as it's specified on the adobe site,
  Variables in the mx_internal namespace are ones that Adobe thinks have a high
probability of changing in future versions of Flex, so they reside in a
special namespace so developers know they may change.

  How can i easily use the repeater control without directly using variables
under mx_internal namespace?

First step should be google.

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/quickstart/using_the_repeater/

>From the page:

The Repeater component places references to individual instances of a repeated
component in an array. You define the name of the array by setting the id
attribute of the component that you place in the Repeater.

In the following example, the RadioButton control in the tag has
its id property set to buttonsArray. The Repeater component adds into this
array a reference to each child RadioButton that it creates. You can refer to
these individual children by using an index-based look-up on the array. For
example, buttonsArray[0] returns a reference to the first RadioButton in the
Repeater.

Paul

  Thanks in advance.

  Feel free to ask for further details.

If it does, I don't know of a component out there to control converted
powerpoint slides. The problem is that currently these coverters target a
different flash virtual machine to that used for AS3/Flex and as such there
is only a small market for this kind of bespoke application. In practice the
slide converters come with a slide player solution of their own and their
target is end users rather than custom component developers.

I gave up trying to control my slides from AS3 and coded the solution using
AS2. Sorry, but I can't donate the code.

You can get hold of the flex help info online :
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/ (google is your friend)

It's not the most trivial thing to write a custom slide player if your
having to find everything out from scratch. Couldn't you just go with a
slide player that's shipped with many converters?

Anyway, good luck.

Re: [flexcoders] Performance...

2008-10-14 Thread Paul Andrews
I beleive the server is running a virtual machine for each user. Each user has
a thin client that behaves like a PC - the server just updates the display.
With 2GB of memory, CPU performance aside, each user is effectively running on
a Windows box with 100MB of memory. It seems that the server is paging memory
because there's not enough real memory to go around. Once that happens
performance will be bad.

I really wonder if such an environment is suitable for a Flex app running
transitions and animations, etc. I'd imagine the thin client is rather like
having a PC with a very slow video card (even when there's enough memory to go
around).

I've no experience of flex in such an environment, but have heard the groans of
people trying to run demanding software using terminal servers.

  Can you more clearly define what is server-side and what is client-side? And
exactly what do you mean by "windows terminal"? Are we talking thin clients,

  I have a flex application that I have written, and is deployed in an
  intranet environment. Between 15 & 20 users use windows terminals
  attached to a w2k3 server. It has 2GB of memory.

  Today I got a complaint of everything running slowly. I logged in and
  saw the CPU pretty much maxed out and memory utilization > physical
  memory. The CPU was fairly evenly distributed among the Iexplore
  processes, which I assume were running the app.

  I have already mentioned to the customer, that we need to increase
  memory, but what else can I do? For example;

  Is firefox better (faster, less memory) that IE 7?

  Some of the HP terminals run windows CE and have IE, is there a way
  of installing flash on the terminal and run straight from the
  terminal?

  Is there anyway of causing flash from multiple users to share memory?

  Obviously I will be analyzing the app to see if there are
  optimizations I can implement there.

  All help is appreciated.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex 3 Layout of long form

2008-10-12 Thread Paul Andrews
Bruce the idea is to break up the long form into separate forms, one in each
tab. The user moves through the tabs filling in the different forms then on
the last tab you can send the information from all forms to the server at
once.

Flex isn't like html - you don't need everything to be in the same form to
be able to send the data to the server. Use forms for layout, give each form
an ID. When the last form is complete (and any validation is OK), use the
button handler that sends the information to the server to collect together
the data from each of the separate forms (it can access the form fields via
the form id - formName.fieldName - and send it to the server.

One thing I should add - when I was researching powerpoint to flash
converters a few months back - none of them produced AS3 swfs, so
controlling the playback from Flex (or Flash AS3) is a little problematic -
you'd need an intemediary AS2 swf to talk between the runtime systems. Some
of the converters include players for playing back the converted files.
Eventually I wrote a player using AS2.

Good luck.

Re: [flexcoders] Couple questions

2008-10-11 Thread Paul Andrews
Bruce, there are a mass of powerpoint to flash converters out there - google
is your friend.

The one I've worked with produced fairly large files and the output is an
AS1/AS2 swf.

If I were writing a slide player, I'd probably use Flex, though for a slide
player it could probably just as well be all in actionscript so Flash or
Flex is neither here nor there.

Think very hard about changing your strategy completely. Having to keep
track of all those ids to remove items from the display list is totally
unnecessary and makes for difficullt to follow code. Check out
removeChild()   (
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/2/langref/flash/display/DisplayObjectContainer.html#removeChild()
 )
.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Using ActionScript2 swf in Flex 3

2008-10-02 Thread Paul Andrews
You're going to have to have to write an AS2 stub for AS3 to communicate
with. The AS2 stub will interact with the AS2 swf and will have to pass data
back and fore through the local connection via handlers. It's likely to be a
PIA. If at all possible, I'd rewrite the code in the AS2 swf convert it to
AS3.

Basically, I think all your asking for is for the user to fill in a form and
have flex send that data to SQL reporting Services (with or without some
other server side component)?

There's no problem sending the form data, but I know nothing about SQL
Reporting Services..

Why can't the air installer not just install the application and when the
application runs, it can check to see if additional external assets have ben
installed and if not, copy them over to the installation. You shouldn't have
to ask the user to install anything except perhaps put a CD/DVD into a drive
for the transfer.

  Use Embed keyword that will help embedding the image in a class while
compiling.
  [Embed("assets/status.png")]

Quick and dirty - in your code declare: var a:Object =
Application.application;

It won't make your code very readable and there are better ways to go about
things - for example using a singleton class to hold 'global' variables
rather than refering to variables declared in the main application.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex 3 Builder and package imports

You have a pretty mixed up project structure - even for Flex 2.

Move the com directory to be a subdirectory of src. The Flex build path
should find them.

  But then how would this execute the binding when the text is updated?

Yes, you're right. Time to get some sleep!

  What I would do is use BindingUtils.bindProperty on each TextInput to set up
the bindings in Actionscript.

  Thanks Paul,

  Unfortunately, that isn't quite what I'm after.

  Setting selectedIndex doesn't necessarily scroll, it just selects an item.

  In your example, if you set the width of the list to 200 you'll see the
problem.

  Has anyone else done this before? Surely this is something others have come
across?

  Many thanks,

  Mike

I've extended the HorizontalList class in the hope of using some of the

Forgot to scroll and make the width smaller than the number of buttons.

Just to clarify: the HorizontalList selectedIndex attribute can be
incremented/decremented by the forward back button to change the selection, the
scrollToIndex method will make sure that the selected index is visible;
horizontalScrollPolicy="off" removes the scroll bar.

Better example below..

  Hello Everyone,

  I'm needing to convert some of my MXMLs files to ActionScript (a webService
dataProvider and a dataService) to use on all of my classes.

Why? You can access the mxml from actionscript. The mxml is compiled into a
class.

  What I need to do to convert from MXMLs to ActionScript?

Yes, some thoughts.

[Bindable] private var xyz:String = MyModel.getInstance().someVar

Means that xyz is bindable and is initialised with the value of
MyModel.getInstance().someVar   .

It does not mean that xyz changes with the value of
MyModel.getInstance().someVar .

If you wish to have a binding in an mxml file to
MyModel.getInstance().someVar  then use "{MyModel.getInstance().someVar }",
alternatively in actionscript you'll have to specifically set up a binding
for it.

Even the OP agrees it's not a good idea to restrict copy-paste.

Just to clarify Dmitri, my point was that the focus of software should be to
enable people to do whatever they wish and not hamper them in that pursuit
without very good reason.

  I'm working with LocalConnection now and having some issues. I'm trying to
load and control some Flash 8 movies with some success. I'm first loading in a
proxy Flash 8 file, and then loading the movies into there. I'm calling
functions in the proxy file which basically tell the loaded movies to go to
certain frames, etc.

I have been down this route and had good inital success but couldn't get it to
work reliably as a Flash project. There was extensive discussion about this on
flashcoders (this isn't specifically a Flex issue.)

  It seems to work most of the time but every now and again I get weird
"undefined" traces in the Flex IDE. I have a lot more testing to do but I'm
not sure how the Flash 9 debugger tries to debug AS2 in a Flash 8 file.

One important consideration was leaving enough time for the AS2 side to settle
down. I found that sometimes I would pass information to the AS2 side via the
connection but the AS2 wasn't properly initalised and ready to handle it, so I
added some delay to ensure that everything was ready on the AS2 side before the
AS3 tried to control it.

Good luck. Eventually I rewrote the whole thing in AS2.. (because I had AS2
swfs that I had to work with).

This should really be in your own thread..

Good software is all about enabling people not disabling them. If software
is to restrict some behaviour there has to be a good reason for doing so and
the scenario presented by the OP is that the reason is poor decision making
by management.

My own feeling is that if the planned change is made it won't be long before
there's a lot of complaints and management ask for the change to be
reversed. If the usual management spin is as I've seen it in most companies,
the whole fiasco will be blamed on the software developers.

> And yes, "managing people" is great as well (as per Josh's comment).

In practice it doesn't make much effort to tackle unwanted behaviour. Often
management prefer avoiding direct confrontation though - particularly if it
involves inter-department disputes.

>From what the OP has said, it seems that the content is probably being cut
and pasted since it saves the user a lot of time, but it's easy to make
mistakes if the result isn't checked. So maybe what would be more
appropriate is an approval flag to indicate if the result has been checked
by a third party if an offender is not checking the resulting content
correctly.

Of course, that's a pure guess.

Re: [flexcoders] HELP non coder With First Site ??? Tips? Idea's of things I should look into :(

2008-09-12 Thread Paul Andrews
Hi John,

It's good to see someone so enthusiastic about Flex, but my advice would be
to take several steps back rather than attempt to build such a complex site
as a first project.

I think it would be best to try and build a one or two page site and then
expand from that. It may also be a good opportunity to reconsider what core
messages that you may wish to promote about your business so that the site
has a clear focus.

Re: [flexcoders] How to clear client browser cache (SWF)

2008-09-11 Thread Paul Andrews
I suppose you could build a flash loader to get the correct url from the server
and load it. That way the user could always reference the same URL and the
flash loader would have to get the correct (changing) url from the server
before loading the main application.

  The straight froward approach would be to append the url with now date or

Re: [flexcoders] Hi

2008-09-09 Thread Paul Andrews
Narayana,

Flexcoders is a helpful list, but it's always best to try and help yourself
first.

Just typing "Flex reading XML" or "Flex XML" into google will lead you to a
load of help about flex and XML, for example
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/quickstart/accessing_xml_data/

The other way that you can help yourself and the other users of the list is
to put a sensible subject line in your post. Having a subject line of 'Hi'
when asking for help on XML is not very helpful. If everyone did that the
list would have threads that could not be followed.

Good luck.

  Instead of defining a function, you could define an interface

But it still wouldn't have a range check at compile time.

  Let's say I have the following call

  s myvar = myfuntion (arg1:x)

  Of course arg1 must be of type x or you get a compile time error. Is
  there any way to force arg1 to be of a certain value range within type
  x and have it checked at compile time?

  For example, is there a way to create a group of constants or value
  objects that the system would validate when compiling the function call?

Re: [flexcoders] Is there a live example which shows Flex can handle thousands of concurrent users?

2008-09-07 Thread Paul Andrews
Wouldn't it really depend on the backend technology used, not just Flex?

Flex is predomiately a client side technology with various options for
interacting with a back-end server, so applications using large numbers of
clients will be dependent more on the server setup, not so much the client.

That said, it'll be interesting to see what replies you get.

Perhaps another slant on this would be:

Spending a couple of thousand dollars (or whatever it might be) in the hope
of cutting your compilation times in half might be a very poor investment.
Lets say you save five seconds per compilation. Just how long will it take
to recoup the time spent setting up your new go-faster machine in order to
shave off a very small amount of compilation time. It could easily take you
months to see any advantage once you've taken the setup time into
consideration. You could even set up the new system and only get a nine
second compilation.

Is it worth it?

Piotr, according to my calculations, on a ten hour working day, without
breaks that would be a compilation every two minutes or so. I think that
even with zero seconds compilation time I wouldn't manage that. I've always
been taught that the time between compilations is more important than
compilation time, so a "thinking/debugging/edit/compile" cycle that fits
into two minutes, concerns me.

I used to work on systems with a 45 minutes build time between debugging
runs, so we would have been in heaven with ten seconds!

My small point is that focussing on losing ten seconds per compile may not
be the place where you can make the most gains. Of course I might be wrong.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Want to build a SWF on the fly when someone requests it

2008-09-03 Thread Paul Andrews
Nate,

You'll also need a Flex front end to interact with the user - so they can
choose appropriate options and specify assets that will be used, then upload
assets, etc. The front end would then instruct the server side to build the swf
from the assets and configuration that the user has selected in the Flex
front-end. Effectively the Flex front end would be responsible for assembling
stage 3 of your pipeline and would initiate stage 4.

  I agree with Paul here. Debugging would be a pain, however, I wouldn't count
this out as impossible.

  Here's what I would do it:

1.. Install mxmlc on my webserver (or offload to another server for
scalability)
2.. Write template MXML & AS documents.
3.. Have a set of configuration files, xml, assets etc.
4.. Use Ruby or Perl, or maybe even PHP to take the configuration files,
assets etc... and generate the code that needs to be compiled from the
templates.
5.. Run the generated files through mxmlc
6.. Now you'd have a swf that you could prompt the user to download or
something else.
  Now that I think about this. It seems a lot like what Animoto does, except
they're generating video instead on a swf, but it's essentially the same type
of system.

  hope this helps,
  Nate

  I agree with Paul from a technological basis, but there is a strong
business case for doing compilation on the fly and having the deliverable be a
single file. People with lower technology aptitude/interest would consider a
single file better/simpler and may use that as a significant factor on what to
purchase. This is why a lot of these types of products do deliver only one
file. A lot also deliver multiple files, so it's by no means a cut and dry

then I would agree with Paul. But sometimes your stuck with what the

Yes, BUT you haven't explained why you cannot package the swf with other
files.

> Folks, can you guide me the proper way now ?

Avoid building a swf file 'on the fly'. It's going to be very hard to do
and
prone to all kinds of problems.

My instinct is this:

If you knew how to do it you would avoid doing it.
If you don't know how to do it and have to ask you shouldn't do it.

My suggestion for 'the proper way' is not to try and build a single swf. -
it's just my opinion, maybe others (and you) disagree.

I'll be interested to see how you get on.

I have no idea who he is. He says some sensible things, he has some
controversial views and he seems to have a mission to push his view of the
world onto the flexcoders community at every opportunity.

I don't have a problem with anyone putting forward a viewpoint or mentioning
some flex related development, but it gets tedious when it's done post after
post. A lot of what Robert has said has been mentioned here before so it's
not some great insight that we're seeing on some new feature of flex
development or software business practices.

Robert clearly has a view of the world that is all his own. It's OK to put
that forward once, but in post after post aspects of that view are pushed
forward. I feel like I'm reading propoganda broadcasts. I don't have an
issue with the technologies that Robert champions - many developers here
(including me) have used papervision, dabbled with lazlo or have used FDT
and many developers here have talked about their use in conjunction with
Flex. I have no problem with devlopers that use other technologies - many of
us use multiple technologies as a matter of course.

Robert is unhappy with some of Adobe's business practices and has declared
his intention to look elesewhere away from flex towards other technologies.
That's his prerogative, but I don't feel he should use absolutely every
opportunity to push his alternative technologies as though he has a mission
to move us from the evil flex into the light.

I just don't like having one persons views pushed at me post after post.
This list is about flex, but lately it's mostly about the world according to
RT.

Don't get me wrong. RT is entitled to have his views, but I shouldn't have
to keep reading about them all of the time.

I think the main mystery is why it has only to be a single swf rather than
swf + customistaion data in various files. You are effectively trying to
include all that customistation inside the swf. Air doesn't preclude
supplying the application + customisation files.

Can you not say what this application is?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Question about Best Practices for Applications with many views using Cairngorm

2008-09-01 Thread Paul Andrews
First of all, I'm no Cairngorm expert and I'm not going to criticise a
reference implementation.

For a store application (any store) I would consider that the model would
hold details of the stock items and the baskets of any shoppers. I wouldn't
have the model keep track of what the shopper is currently doing, because
that's not something that affects the shop stock or the users basket. The
view on the other hand is concerned with what the user is doing and needs to
keep track of the view state in order to manage the interface.

In this respect I would be using constants to represent view states but they
would be constants associated with view classes not model classes.

My feeling is that model classes need to be as far as possible separate from
the view, so that in theory you could replace the view implementation
without changing the model at all.

Inevitably there is a coupling between view and model but it's in terms of
how the model is manipulated and accessed by the view.

That's how I think about these things. I've been wrong before and will be
again and I have no criticism for the Cairngorm Store.

I'm not sure that's helpful.

Paul

Robert loads of people already know about FDT, many people here and on
flashcoders use it. Nobody here wants anyone acting like some public service
announcer here on the forums. It's highly patronising to list. It'all going to
end in tears.

  Just as a note on ActionScript 3.0 Editing in FLEX.

  Papervision3D just posted news of their contest, endorsed FDT Enterprise
Edition as their preferred ActionScript Editor.

  From Papervision3D.org, quote,

  "2nd Place- VectorVision - Winner of FDT Enterprise Edition (our preferred
ActionScript editor)"

  Papervision3D is a great organization who has dramatically improved
flexcoding possibilities.

  FDT + Papervision3D = Great news for everyone.

End users aren't normally given swfs - they are generally either provided
with an application that they install, or they go to a web page. Just what
is your plan?

If they use a web page there's no need to have everything in a single swf,
if they have an application an installer can install an application file
plus any other files required for customisation.

Your proposed solution is fraught with difficullty as an automated process.

I can't quite follow how your application is put together. Usually the view
is bound to the model via the modellocator and I don't really see the
problem with that. I'm not sure what you are doing with the constants in the
modellocator. The model shouldn't be tracking what is happening in the view.

Basically the view issues events to notify the model of what changes are
happening and to cue the model to make changes to itself as a result of what
is going on in the view. The model changes and via binding the view is
updated.

Scary. Microsoft just bought Adobe. Shriek!

The development world is big and Adobe consulting doesn't come cheap, so I
think there's those that can afford the cream of the crop no matter what the
cost and then there's the rest of the world that have budgets, so there's
always going to be room for everyone.

Mission accomplished. Use this:

body {overflow:visible; height:1500px }

I think the OP needs scrollbars at the side of the design because the flex
app is centered and floating inside the html page. Adding a scrollbar to the
flex would have the scrollbar in the page and spoiling the design aesthetic. I
guess the designer has a html background to match the design of the flex app so
that where flex ends and html begins isn't apparent.

Instead of thinking of two shapes with one being subtracted from the other,
think of it as one of those inflatable neck pillows, but with the ends
wrapping around completely. It would look like a regular pillow with a hole,
but would actually be a horseshoe shape with the ends touching.

  Anatole,

  I understand there is a sense of umbrage towards Microsoft over this
decision; I disagree with some of the wild theories floating around as to what
the real motivation behind this is. Seven entities in total disagreed with
Mozilla and Adobe that the proposal was a right fit. I however look forward to
seeing what the next phase of this standard will become, and overall
Silverlight will continue to have successes as it has today, if either decision

  Silverlight has the DLR, so if folks want to spin-up their own iteration of
an ECMA standard of their choosing, you're more than welcome to it and I'd be
curious to see how you triumph!

There's got to be some irony about Adobe offering a prize from a company
that is reluctant to allow Adobes developers onto their phone. Just as well
the draw isn't for an iPhone dontTouch for non US developers to not be
entered in.. ;-)

  Hi ,
  Matt quick questions for you ,

  Does iphone has capability to run Flash Player 9 applications ? or Adobe team
is trying to develop some Lite Flash player for iphone ?

I'm no insider, but rumour has it that flash is already running in secret rooms
but Apples licencing is an obstacle. Apple makes money from developers selling
their applications through Apple and to develop for the iPhone you need a
modern mac, so financially there's an incentive for Apple to keep the iPhone to
themselves (for the moment, anyway).

It's company politics not technical difficullties keeping flash from the iPhone.

  Read the follow-up tweets, they were joking around. No Flex Builder on the
iPhone. No Flex Builder building apps for the iPhone.

  I suspect they mean building flex apps to run on the iphone so I
  guess a flash player on the iphone?

  purely speculation.

Please explain where and what your 4,000 lines of code is. If you have an
mxml or actionscript file that is 4,000 lines of code long, it almost
certainly means that you aren't making good use of classes and flex
components.

I also have no idea what you mean by "i am binding 2000 XML with different
ids".

Presumably you don't have 4,000 lines of code in one file, which would be
asking for trouble. The other thing to do is to turn off automatic builds in
flexbuilders preferences.

Hi Jo,

It seems I was completely wrong about the script block inside a VBox (I've
never written my code that way). The code below compiles without a problem:
