[Flexradio] New Release of Flex 6300 will not install on the radio (1.7.30)

2016-05-22 Thread Don Plunkett
This new version will not upload to my Flex 6300. I get a message to the
effect that the software is incompatible with the radio. This happened with
the last release as well. Win10 and up to date. I can still open the radio
using the release 1.6.17.74 (at least that is the HW version on the flex).

Any ideas would be welcome.

Firstly, thanks to all who responded to me privately!

So I found the following article at the Knowledge Center:

http://kc.flex-radio.com/knowledgebasearticle50362.aspx

However, it contains several links to article
that appear to no longer exist. Specifically:

http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50230.aspx

There are several more bad links and I'll keep
plugging away but I thought the good folks at
Flex should know of the dead links in their articles

Re: [Flexradio] New user - Flex 6300

2015-11-02 Thread Larry Loen
Fred. another thing you might try is another engine. If you don't already
have it, you could try Fldigi, which is (as I recall) a free download. you
need to obtain a special XML file for the Flex to configure it (just google
for it). But, it is otherwise a relatively straightforward exercise. At
the least, there are fewer "moving parts" in the discussion for Fldigi.

I don't care if you every use Fldigi on the air; Not really advocating
that as such. I'm suggesting that if you worked with it, you might be able
to get it going and that would give you some big clues about how to do the
rest.

I have MixW2 (abandonware), Fldigi, and wsjt-x all running on mine. All
had their little issues to overcome. As I recall, though, it became easier
after the first one was working. I can even run MixW2 first and add one of
the others.

Particularly, I found it helpful to create a PTT port under CAT; Fldigi and
WSJT-X both seem to work better with that. MixW2 seems to make the "PTT as
CAT command" trick work. But, each software install was its own minor
adventure.

In my case (running an earlier SmartSDR) Tim had to come on to my system
and help me kill some dead ports. That was also screwing my little system
up. So, maybe your system has some history that needs to be overcome.
Once I got past that problem, it all became easier.

Re: [Flexradio] new Win 7 computer and 1500

2014-09-08 Thread dave dabay
Installed the new Win7 box, and running well, so far.

Mostly uneventful process, thank you to all who provided process and things to
back up ideas. My dual monitor card (Zotac) was plug and play.

Two things remain, getting used to Win7

and a niggle with Fldigi….on the XP machine I could "hover" over a call sign
and Fldigi would return a pop up that either showed the "log entry" or the
country. I compared the XP and Win7 machines for the cty.dat file and that it
was in the fldigi.files tree (this is 3.21.83) and it is/was. But no pop up
unless the call is in my log. I may remove and reload fldigi in a week so,
once I have a reliability base line set, to see if something happened there.

Thanks in advance, and oh, by the way,

my CPU % dropped from almost 30% with the old box - to never more than 5% with
the Win7 box

Robert -

If the Flex was working and you have not done anything to software since I
really expect that the driver are properly installed.

With a new PC there are many things set for your convenience. The first big
item is make sure that all of the power saving options are OFF.

If everything there looks good, download a (free) copy of DPCLAT.EXE and
let it run while using the radio. When you have a hit, look at the numbers
in the DPCLAT report.

[Flexradio] New computer. Flex 7.2 not working

2014-02-01 Thread Robert Kearbey
Hi to all
I just had made for me a new quadcore amd 64 computer. Downloaded Flex 7.2x
along with Ddutil and vsp etc.
Flex worked great and then started just quitting whether I was doing
anything with it or not. Just got home from church. Clicked up Flexradio,
it loaded, displayed, but wouldn't turn on even though the start/stop
switch showed 'on'. Made several contacts last night with it even though it
would quit once in awhile and just had to hit the start/stop button to get
it going again. Now it won't work at all. Considering uninstalling it and
redownloading and installing again. What do others think about this?
Wondering if maybe the fire driver didn't install correctly or something.

Dave :

With my Flex-1500 I had been successfully running Powersdr on a late-2009
Uni-Body Macbook with WIN 7 32-bit, until i bought a dedicated quad-core PC
laptop for
for Ham Radio use. I’m assuming that your Mini is at least a dual-core (Intel
Core Solo Mini’s are quite rare) so you should be fine.

One of the reasons that Macs run Windows quit well is that you can’t buy a Mac
with Windows pre installed, so you have to do a clean install. You don't
end up with all of the software junk that the computer vendors include with new
PCs. Also I think that the Mac Windows drivers are quite good, so Mac's make a
decent
and stable platform to run Windows.

Which Flex Radio are you thinking of ?

Good morning,

I subscribed to this list because I am considering a Flex-radio for my
next purchase. I'm wondering if my present computer is adequate. I am
running Windows 7/64 bit on a Mac-Mini. Yes, I am one of those. I
believe the Mac hardware runs Windows faster and more reliably than does
the PC hardware. No, I'm not trying to start a discussion about this
concept. I just want to know if I can run the radio with it.,

Re: [Flexradio] New subscriber__ computer question

2014-01-31 Thread Geep Howell
There are a number of people on the list who run Mac equipment without issue.
I am sure some of them will respond to you, but I believe you will be fine as
long as you are running Boot Camp. Parallels does not work with the Flex
software. While I run Macs here, I have not run any of the Flex radios on a
Mac box, I use one of Neal Campbell's custom built machines that has extremely
low latency. That is the key to successfully running PowerSDR, the higher the
latency, the worse experience you will have. You can look through the archives
for Mac comments, there have been many.

You might also want to check the newest user community for all Flex radios at

Mark, this has happened to me with VE7CC. It doesn't correctly save window
location info when you have multiple monitors.

Try this: turn off computer, unplug one monitor, boot, start program. All
windows should be visible on the single monitor. Relocate all of them in
the middle of the screen, then turn off and hook up other monitor. When you
start, hopefully the windows will be somewhere that you can find them. At
least this gambit works with VE7CC.

Wouldn't it be great if, now that F5K has been discontinued, the
hardware/interfacing spec could be made public, so that it can be hacked to
work with cuSDR (https://plus.google.com/107168125384405552048/posts)?   I
guess, then we'd be able to use the F5K like an F6K.

Re: [Flexradio] New SDR (Software Defined Radio) User's Discussion Group.

2013-05-24 Thread Bradley Feldman
Wouldn't it be great if, now that F5K has been discontinued, the
hardware/interfacing spec could be made public, so that it can be hacked to
work with cuSDR (https://plus.google.com/107168125384405552048/posts)? I
guess, then we'd be able to use the F5K like an F6K.

I am wondering if there has been a change to the settings used for running
the Self calibration routines...?

Is it still 96khz at 1024k buffer, with Factory Default ROM info..?

Since my last calibration using that format, I have bad image spikes even
within the ham bands. While the preamp seems to get rid of many of them,
there are enough left to be problematic to some extent.

I have not seen this before so if I can eliminate that variable, I'll have
one less to find.

I'm not running the most recent version yet, but a version with the

Hello Paul,

we are pleased that UK ham radio operators are now authorized to use the new
60m band. We want you to know that we are working on including the new
frequency allocation in the upcoming PowerSDR 2.6 software release planned for
May. Since January, there have been a number of public discussions regarding
the legal issues surrounding this topic. Let me summarize briefly the legal
requirements that we as an amateur radio manufacturer must follow:

This is a matter of UK and EU (R & TTE; CE) law. It is not legal for FlexRadio
as a manufacturer to ship a radio into the UK that can transmit outside of the
ham bands. We as a manufacturer provide the necessary software tool for our
distributors to adjust the radios to the needs of their customers because they
ship into entire EU. The EU states have different frequency allocations for
amateur radio. This is why the CE sign comes with an "!" on the radio - which
simply means "not harmonized". The distributors act regarding the firmware
change on their own legal responsibility.
The software work necessary for these changes will take some time and will be
distributed with the next release of PowerSDR v.2.6.0. We understand the
priority of an update of PowerSDR including a match to the new 5 MHz privileges
for UK customers. Our target is to present PowerSDR v2.6.0 including a new
FireWire driver by May. We will provide for the UK a functional BETA version
before the end of our Quality/Test cycle.
In addition when we are ready, I would like to accelerate the so called "TURF"
process for your radio by providing the necessary files either by your
distributor in UK or by me. If you would like to commence theses changes with
your national distributor you may do so. In case you have purchased the radio
directly from USA or got it second hand etc. you are welcome to get the files
from me.
In this case please provide per e-mail your
=> NoV letter from OfCom
=> type of radio
=> serial number of your radio
You will receive an instruction how to adjust your unit, the necessary software
(TurfClient)and the individual software key(Turf-File).
Cheers and 73s,

Klaus, DK7XL

[Flexradio] New UK 60m Band Utilization Chart

2013-02-21 Thread Ian Wade G3NRW
Now that activity on 60m is settling down, and trends in operation in
the individual band segments are becoming apparent, the time is ripe for
publication of the new-look "UK 60m Band Utilization Chart", at:

  http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wadei/UK_60m_band_utilization.htm

Click on the red "UK 60m BAND UTILIZATION CHART" button, then follow the
link to the latest PDF version of the chart.

As with the 30m and 160m versions of the chart, the intent of the 60m
chart is to show what is actually happening on the band today. It is not
a replacement for the Whiteboard, it is not "official", and it is not a
"bandplan". (Presumably the RSGB will be introducing an official
bandplan in due course).

If you spot any omissions or errors in the chart, please email me
direct, at:

mailto: g3nrw-ra...@ntlworld.com

Special thanks go to John (GM4SLV), Peter (G3PLX), Paul (G4MWO) and Ian
(G4FSU ) for their reviews of early drafts of the chart. Their feedback
was invaluable.

[Flexradio] New 6000 Series Status?

2013-02-07 Thread TM
I love my Flex 3000, and it does everything I could need to do. Therefore,
there is no good reason for a new radio. However, reason and need have seldom
been overriding concerns in my ham radio career! So, I am thinking of a 6500.

Have seen little info lately on the new radios. Anyone know if any are in the
field yet and how they are working? Thanks.

When I select COM27 in your program, the setup in your program shows COM41 ,

Any ideas?

This little utility will display and/or print a graph of the SWR of your
antenna system across any amateur band (160m to 6m, excluding 60m) or a
portion thereof.

Because the FLEX-1500 does not have the circuitry to read SWR, the program
will only work with the FLEX-3000 and the FLEX-5000.

True.

My old reliable desktop machine started intermittently crashing at boot
time. After clearing the BIOS with the reset jumper and replacing the

It doesn't sound like a scenario where I would expect that to make a
difference. Normally, replacing a battery is needed when the motherboard
loses BIOS settings when its powered down (not plugged into the mains)
and it doesn't boot.

This type of problem sounds like hardware (the ram testing is a good
suggestion) so its either ram, disk, motherboard or power supply.

That was my thought too. I've already run memtest86 but part of the
problem is that the PC won't boot with all 3GB of memory in it. It
even freezes memtest86. When this started I had sporadic problems
getting it to boot with 3GB. Then I removed all but 1GB and it would
boot fine. I thought I had a bad memory module but all tested fine
one at a time. Now it's starting to take several tries to boot even
with 1GB and will sporadically reboot on it's own. I played a hunch
that maybe the power supply was going bad and not able to handle the
load when all the memory was in it but no such luck. I needed a new
PSU anyway though so no biggie. It's time to just upgrade
anywayPC is a hand me down from the XYL, I normally put together
my own. I just have to do it on the cheap this time because of plans
of getting another 1500 soon.

True. PowerSDR just doesn't stress a graphics card since it really doesn't
use any graphics acceleration.

But there are still issues with wanting to have low DPC performance, even
for the 1500. Neal is still the source for info about which MoBos work best.

Re: [Flexradio] New 5000a Owner Panic

2012-10-12 Thread Bill Roberts
Aaren,

Regarding RF ingress, I have had a few intermittent problems with my Flex
5K, most notably on 20 meters. Over the years, I've had similar problems
with other rigs (it's not just Flex). Aside from having an earth ground
right in my basement shack and grounding all computers, radio boxes via 1
inch tined braid, I have found the following general practices helpful in
avoiding RF problems:

* Ferrite split beads on every USB cable connected to the computer.

* Ferrite split beads in all power cables (120V, 13.6V, 50V, etc.)
connected to radios, amplifiers, power supplies, speakers, etc.

* Ferrite split beads (2 - 3) on cables in and out of Flex (XLR Mic,
Firewire, speakers) and all other radios.

Regarding RF on coax shield, one alternative I've found helpful and
economical are the RF Isolators available from Radio Works. Go to
http://www.radioworks.com/ click on their on line catalog. The models and
specs for RF Isolators are found on page 9. I have used the T4G Plus (G

Like others have said, before sweating things too much, call Flex Technical
Support. They are both good and professional. The few times I've called,

[Flexradio] New 5000a Owner Panic - UPDATE

2012-10-12 Thread Aaren Jensen
Thanks to all for your prompt and knowledgeable replies overnight. I have
direction and ideas on what to pursue (and I have backed away from the
cliff :)

Here is a summary and some of my additional information.

*Front Mic Port Dead*

   - The mic I'm trying to get working with the front port is a Heil HM-Pro
with the CC1Y (Yaesu) cable, both are sold as 'official' 5000a accessories
on the Flex website. Mine were purchased new in 2012 and used (with no
problems) on my Yaesu FT-847 right up until the arrival of the Flex 5000. I
also have the stock mic for the FT-847 (which I assume is also the Yaesu
wiring pattern everyone is referring too). I have confirmed the correct
settings in the PowerSDR Mixer and yet both mics are not working, totally
dead, no PTT, no audio detected.
   - I have an open ticket with Flex on this item and emailing back and
   forth with Dudley :)
   - I'm going to open up the radio and check the ribbon cable connection
between the port and the board inside this weekend.

*PowerSDR Crashing on Transmit on the 20m band*

   - RF, RF, RF.
   - To test if this is the case, use a dummy load instead of an antenna
and see if I get the same results?
   - Install a ground strap between the PC and the Flex. Is 6 feet too
long? That is the same length as the firewire cable that came with the
radio and the approx distance between the two items in the shack.
   - I already have a ground strap from the Flex to the outside ground
system, so I would add a second strap from the Flex to the back panel of
the PC. One of the screws from the PC power supply is a good connection
   point maybe?
   - This should not create a ground loop, PC to Flex, Flex to outside
ground. No additional equipment at this time (amplifier, antenna tuner, swr
meter etc). Keep it simple when troubleshooting right?
   - The PC power supply and 12v radio power supply both have AC ground as
   well.
   - Adding snap on ferrites everywhere on the PC cables.

Once again, thanks all

RFI can occur when there is an impedance mismatch betweeen the
transceiver and the antenna. Coax acts like it's actually three
conductorsthe center, inter shield and outer shield. Ofter, RF
voltage feedback travels into the transceiver on the outer shield.
Straight out of the ARRL handbook. Usually more noticable on 10 meters
than on 80. Solution.tweek the antenna for less that 1.5:1 VSWR.
When computers are added to the equasion, RFI can be reduced with proper
groundinng and toroid cores.

I have the same issue. Works on 80 and audio is distorted on 20 meters. I'll
bet it is RF ingress issues like mine. Now to determine where the RF is coming
into the radio.

2012-10-11 Thread Charles Reiche
A simple line isolator saved my flex-3k from the trash heap. I thought I
was going crazy and that I wasted my money. Turns out it was just a little
RF getting back where it doesnt belong. Going through this helped me
realize that some things in my shack needs to be reworked. I'm sure alot of
people's shacks are like this. I love my radio now and it is a very capable
and fun machine to work with. I'm sure you will be loving your 5k in
short order.
Stick with it!

With respect to your mic situation, did you check the proper box on the
input to make sure that you have the front panel mic turned on? You can
select either the front or rear mic input from the menu.

Check to make sure that the notch on the mic connector is lined up
correctly with the port when you plug it in. I've noticed that some

The "it works on 80, dies on 20" very much sounds like RF getting into the
computer. Others can give you a list of things to check, but to start with
- you need a short solid ground connection between the 5000 and the PC. RF
in the shack may result from high swr, keeping RF off of the outside of the
coax when it comes into the shack (using *Toroidal Chokes* on the coax)
can help a lot.

Re: [Flexradio] New 5000a Owner Panic

2012-10-11 Thread Michael Walker
Aaren

Sounds strange as their quality control is pretty great. I am also
confident that Flex will get on the phone with you and sort it out.

Just to make sure that RF isn't an issue, do you have a dummy load that you
can test 20M on? Usually if a computer up and freezes, it is due to RF
getting into the keyboard somehow. That doesn't happen much any more with
most people using wireless keyboards and mice. Can you describe your
antenna farm at all?

It may also be RF getting into the firewire cable.

If you turn the RF power down to 0 on 20M, does PSDR still crash?

Make sure you read up on how the AGC-T is used. Out of the box, the
setting of 90 is too high. It is a very powerful tool and you need to
treat it like an RF gain on a traditional radio.

Also, there is an entire alignment process for all the audio chains you
need to go through to ensure your best audio quality and that the 4 audio
sections are playing well together. W1AEX has done a great write up.
http://www.w1aex.com/psdrgain/psdrgain.html.

I hope that helps you get going while you wait for Flex to get in touch
with you.

Aaren:

1. Front mic port is DOA right out of the box.

Check to make sure that the notch on the mic connector is lined up
correctly with the port when you plug it in. I've noticed that some
connectors go in without the notch being aligned.

Jerry,
I recently bought a new Yaesu MD100A8X and I use it with both my Flex 1500
and my FT-950. I use the LDG SLS-2 switch and switch between the two rigs
with no problems. I did not change any wiring. I use the Flex on HF and
also with a transverter.
I have also used the original Yaesu FT-950 hand mic, MH31 in the same way
before I got the MD100, with no problems. If I can provide any other info
let me know.  Good luck.

Never mind - uninstall and reinstall of PowerSDR fixed the issue - when I
installed PowerSDR origionally I did not have a Flex 1500 so the drivers
were not available when I first plugged in the1500 - I now have the
TurboEncabulator Interfaces installed and radio is working at least on RX.
I had to cancel the uninstall and uninstall vspmgr and then restart the
install - will see if I can make a contact now!

[Flexradio] New 1500 install trouble

2012-06-29 Thread Larry da Ponte
Hello group - proud owner of a new Flex 1500 but having some install
issues. I'm running a Mac PowerBook 8gb ram, dual core, with win7 64 and
PowerSDR 2.3.5. Upon plugging in the 1500's USB port and powering on the
radio, windows 7 started searching for a driver. It found two drivers but
failed to find two others. The windows dialog shows one USB Composite
Device and four Flex-1500 devices. Three of the 1500 devices failed with
"No driver found" while the last Flex-1500 device says "Flex 1500 Software
Defined Radio" ready to use. So - not sure if that's a failure or a
success but since it said the flex was ready I started PowerSDR and see the
flex radio chooser. The Flex 1500 is not on the list but my Flex 3000 and
5000 (with their serial numbers showing) are. So - I think the USB is
connected since the driver recognized the radio but PowerSDR is not able to
see the 1500 and let me select it. Suggestions on next steps?

Thanks

How are you measuring the power output? What's your SWR on 2m?

What are you using for signal generation? The TUN button? FM? SSB?

Re: [Flexradio] New VU5K only 10w out on 2m

2012-06-10 Thread Paul
Hi Dan,

I have separate swr meters connected inline with each antenna.

The swr is low 1.2:1 on 2m and 1.1:1 on 70cm

Gulf Alpha EZSat antenna

I'm thinking there may be something I'm overlooking

Drive set to 100 on both bands during TX

Re: [Flexradio] New list

2012-05-26 Thread Gerald Youngblood
I would like to encourage that the discussions around the FLEX-6000
Signature Series move to the FlexEdge reflector, which is intended for new
products and software. That will return this reflector to discussions
related to the shipping products and PowerSDR.

Gerald

[Flexradio] New Computer

2012-05-05 Thread TM
I finally got a new computer that should do better with PSDR. I am
currently running PSDR v2.2.3. My plan is just to install the latest
version of PSDR on the new machine, plug in the Flex 3000 and go from there.
Just wondering if I am missing anything? Assume will need to port over
settings and so forth? Just not sure which.

Appreciate any other experience on moving to new machine. Thanks!
