Apple Care is an especially good deal for powerbook users as it also covers your original battery, which will almost certainly need replacing within 3 years. The battery needn't die, either, it's enough that it isn't working properly, which is a bit subjective, but which is the standard Apple uses for anything else, such as the CD/DVD, etc. In practical terms, I got my Lombard battery replaced right at the end of the 3-year Applecare period. It was holding about a 30 minute charge and when I called, the Apple people didn't even question the claim; they immediately opened a case number and starting processing shipment of the new battery. Great stuff. Considering that a new battery is usually about half the price of Applecare, it's not a bad deal. Chris H -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... [ANN] File Synchronization Released
Folks, If some of you are like me, mostly using a laptop under OS X, but having a better desktop computer and sometimes feeling like working on it for its speed and better screen, you might have faced the problem that arises when some key files are on your laptop: you have to copy those files to your desktop, use it and then copy them back to your laptop. I'm talking about the email files that every email reader uses, your web browser bookmarks and any other file that you might want to have on both your laptop and your desktop computer. The problem is when you start having a few of those, it gets difficult to manage. That's why I wrote a synchronization tool for OS X named File Synchronization. For those of you that were using the old File Synchronization control panel under OS 9, File Synchronization was based on that tool, but I added a few options to make it more usable than it was. For those that weren't, I tried to write an application that was really easy to use and quick to do the job. Features: automatic mounting of remote volumes; no document to open: all files and folders are accessible through the main window; multithreaded for smooth operation even when copying hundreds of megabytes; preview mode lets you see what will happen before the synchronization is performed; drag drop from the Finder; Cocoa-based. If you want to give it a spin, you can download the application at: http://nemesys.dyndns.org/Files/FileSynchronization1.0.1.dmg or http://members.verizon.net/~vze4jymq/Files/FileSynchronization1.0.dmg or http://members.cox.net/nemesys/Files/FileSynchronization1.0.dmg. Re: G3 vs G4
Depends if your G3/800 is an upgraded PPC or a Beige or a BW ...all three have dif bus speeds 46(50)/66/100 respectively. (a G3 upgrade usually decreases the bus speed a little in a PPC, in my 9600/umax600 experiences) A PPC w/G3 800 and a PCI video card I dont think will compete that well with a G4/gigabit/500 w/AGP video card. you may be processing info at a quicker pace but the G4 is sending it 100%+ faster to where it needs to go...the PCI bus is a BW #1 slot is also a bit faster 66mhz vs. 33mhz So depends on what games you are playing, as far as gaming (if split seconds matter) as far as surfing and downloading I dont think either is noticably faster than the other. Then Jaguar is a dif story that Im not that familiar with it was on my newly aquired ibook, and I took it off as soon as I could around to it. It slows down a ibook500 w/384 ram so it runs like an old 604e in a lot of instances ( though the ibook500 only has 66mhz bus speed ). Ive also heard that it doesnt do so well with many games either unless made with osx in mindI wouldnt think that a G4/500 would run it much better unless having a lot more ram than 384. amount of ram is also almost as important than cpu speed. either way I would rather have a G4/500 (overclock it to 550) with a nice 32 or 64mb AGP Geforce card and maxed out ram than a 1ghz upgraded PPC with maxed ram and a 32 or 64mb pci card.even if the G4 machine is an upgraded BW if offered both for free I think Id take the BW G4/500(550) over a PPC g3/800 ...for hardcore gamming. ...long live the hardcore mac gamer =) on 11/20/02 9:33 AM, Jeremy Derr at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at 06:29 PM, wappling wrote: Hi all,an opinion question, for web surfing and mpeg downloading and playing,is a G3 800 as fast or faster than a G4 500mhz machine running OS10.2 ? thankyou in advance for the uses you list, there isn't much difference between the two processors. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: OSX Speed increase with more RAM?
I have a 400 MHz Pismo with 768 MB OS 10.2.2, it runs well. I usually run with a couple of browsers open, Entourage as my mail client, Photoshop 7, and Adobe GoLive usually open. I don't have any complaints and as long as I'm quick, I can swap batteries without needing to be on AC. My one gripe is that battery life in general is relatively short (2.5 - 3 hours max on 1). Thus I tend to stay tethered to my power adaptor most of the time. If you are going to be doing basic stuff (downloading, playing music, etc) then go with the cheaper one. You also might want to look at things other than the CPU speed, such as hard drive size (essential for all of that music) I'm assuming you are comparing a PowerBook G4/500 to an iBook/800. The TiBooks are cooler (figuratively, anyway) and you can add a CD Burner if it isn't already there. The screen on the TiBook is MUCH larger than most iBooks's. The iBook will beat the older TiBook's by a good margin in gaming because of their much faster and more recent video cards. Also, only the iBook's video card can do Quartz Extreme. Re: OSX Speed increase with more RAM?
Holy Cow! Are you saying that Apple restored this feature in Jaguar? I tried it back in 10.0 (I think) and of course, crashed the computer (also a Pismo), so gave it up and figured Apple wouldn't bother fixing it, since the current 'books don't have a second battery to swap. I saw other people in the thread mention it, but they always seemed to have OS 9 installed, too, so I assumed that's what they meant. Firewire + iBook (white) Problem with 9.2.2
I have one of the 15 white iBooks. I dual boot this laptop with MacOSX and MacOS 9.2.2. The firewire works fine with MacOSX but it just does not work at all with 9.2.2. Just a note on a Mac G4 being chosen by specialists and paid forby Sweethearts
In the current issue of ATBI Quarterly*, a photo of the new G4 Mac and monitor, with scanner and monitor is shown. It's good to know that when DLIA (Discover Life in America) photographer Rebecca Schiflett did the research on what machine is best, she chose Mac. The system will allow them to scan in slides and prints and negatives and fresh specimens. And the National Park Service paid for it totally. d *ATBI = All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory. ATBI and DLIA are working hard in the Smokey Mountains to catalogue ALL life that is there. It is an awesome project that is being conducted by scientists and private volunteers. Their webpage, www.discoverlifeinamerica.org is under construction but they have already found 292 new species, with new to the Park being 2,163. If this much gets you excited, or you just like environmental stuff, or want to volunteer for a day or week or summer of collecting samples in the Park, or just want to send money to Jeanie, you can get more lurid details at the temporary webpages, http://atbi.biosci.ohio-state.edu/dlia/index.html There are a number of projects that are scheduled for the coming year, including a Beetle Blast, which can't be as interesting as the Myxoblast that I missed because I had to be in court, and you can find out more about all of this at the webpage. See what happens. I would imagine that the file would be named 'com.apple.Mail' or something similar. This worked! (or at least, no problems again so far!) :) Thanks! Glad it worked. Why moving the preference file help? Good question! Most likely because the file becomes corrupted. There are bogus values in it and when the application tries to make sense of it, you can start seeing the application getting busy and the busy cursor appears and the app never recovers. At that point, the application, if it doesn't crash, might be loss in some kind of endless loop, trying to get at non-existent or faked values. If you force quit, sometimes it just makes things worst if the application was updating that file. It can be left with even more bogus values. When you launch the app, it might still be working because some parts of the file are still fine, but as soon as the app tries to access the damaged part, all kind of things might happen. It's hard to tell because there are some techniques that you can sometimes use in order to detect something that doesn't make any sense. However, due to the highly object-oriented nature of the system, sometimes you don't have control over it since it's a private class or a private piece of code that is executing. pocket drive from Wallstreet wants to format to read by both Win2K pro, and Mac OS
Feel free to send me to the correct discussion group but. I took the 20 gig Hitachi out of my Wallstreet, and put it in a OWC firewire case. I even do it with zip discs, and the CDs that I burn from my Mac They're all interchangable. Why can't I do it with a portable drive, or can I? Re: wiping hard drive clean
Aladdin Systems, maker of Stuffit has a product called Secure Delete. This is from their web page: http://www.aladdinsys.com/secure_delete/index.html Secure DeleteĀ is like a paper shredder for your computer files. If you have confidential paper documents you need to destroy, a paper shredder is the best tool. But, today's paperless office needs a tool that safely and effectively handles computer files as well. Paper documents you crumple up and throw in the wastebasket can be easily picked out and read by prying eyes. The same is true with digital files. Even after you drag files to the trash and empty it, those files can be recovered and read by people who should not have access to them. With Secure Delete you can permanently remove files with confidence and ease. Just drag and drop the files of your choice onto the Secure Delete icon, and they are gone for good. SECURE DELETE CAN HELP IF YOU: *Use A Laptop. Theft rates are high and laptops are easily accessed by others. *Share a Workstation. Be careful of co-workers prying eyes. *Take Your Mac in for Repairs. Don't let technicians read your private files. *Need More Disk Space. Why waste space? Get rid of useless files for good. *Operate a Home Business. Whether your office is inside or outside your home, private documents need protection. *Must Destroy Confidential Files. Secure Delete can help you comply with the law if you are legally required to destroy confidential files. WHEN YOU NEED TO BE CERTAIN, USE SECURE DELETE! -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Check out Macwireless.com.== MacWireless enables almost all Macintosh models to connect to a wireless network, no matter how old or new these machines may be. If you have a PowerBook 190, 5300, 2400; or if you have a desktop PCI system; or if you have a machine with a USB port such as an iMac, now you also can have a wireless network connection. I am using their pc card in my lombard and the usb adapter with an Imac, Both work flawlessly, have not had a problem.
