No, not if you are only needing to partition an installed drive. I
looked back at the post to which I previously responded, and it was a
4th or 5th generation response with most of the original information
deleted. So, I took it to mean that the dealer was going to install
the drive and then partition it. Your comment then, would have
referred to installing the drive yourself, if you had the
instructions, then partition it.

Obviously, that's not quite what you meant. Sorry I misinterpreted
what your comment.

Actually, partitioning is very easy. The hardest part is A.) deciding
how big to make the partitions (unless you have a huge drive); B.)
making sure you install the correct drivers for the various Operating
Systems you will be using. And FWIW give some thought to what you
want to name the various partitions before you partition the drive.
You can change the names later, but sometimes that involves hassles
with aliases and path names. Just as an idea, some us use names that
describe what will be in a particular partition -- Boot Drive
Applications, Data, Utilities, Downloads, Scrap, CD Burn etc.

I went back to re-read your previous posts in this thread (better
late than never g) and you sound like you want to install a couple
of versions of Panther as well as Jaguar on different partitions. I
don't use Panther, so I'll let someone who does, give you
instructions on how to partition your drive. But it should be a piece
of cake. (I have 8 partitions and 5 Operating Systems on my drive.)
Just keep in mind the two caveats I mentioned above.

Good Luck,

Bob

Re: Network G4 iBook with PM 7300/500 ??

2004-06-28 Thread MacAddictvja
Thanks for your advice Bob. I will look into getting a hub. Now, to answer
your first question. On my PowerMac 7300/500, I use OS 9.1 most of the time.
When I share files with my G4 iBook, I will always be using OS 9.1

I have file sharing set on the PowerMac 7300/500, and was able to access all
the iBook files from the PM 7300.

I tried setting up the iBook for File Sharing, but must be missing something
somewhere. I need to be able to access files on the PM from the iBook too,
but could not see anything from the PM while on the iBook.

Another question: I have the router set up to the PowerMac 7300/500, and was
wondering, if I get a hub, can I have the PowerMac connected to the router,
and also have the PowerMac networked with my iBook at the same time, so I
don't need to continually disconnect the ethernet cable each time I was to
network? That would really be great if I could just leave the two computers
networked, and also have them both online at the same time through the
router.

Thanks again for your advice and assistance.

What to buy with a new PB?

Flaky Pismo

2004-06-28 Thread COCCORP
Morning all,

I've got a Pismo that is Pismo'ing me off!

I obtained a Pismo 400mhz with a blank HD I am trying to format and download
OS 9.1 on.

The 1st thing I noticed that was odd, once I booted it up w/ OS 9.1 install
CD in the DVD-rom drive, was that one of the desktop's menu bar titles had a
black line through it. Never seen that before...

Anyway, it formatted the HD okay. When went into the install program, and I
noticed that (in the read me page and then the software agreement form) more
lines of text seemed to be crossed out, or other wise blank.

Buy the time I got to the Start Install page, it was totally blank except for
the start button. The subsequent install progress display was blank. Also,
the install did not take place, it keeps crashing about a minute into the
install.

What gives? I have used this install CD before, on my 2400 and my 3400, and
it never gave me any problems at all, let alone the weird ones I am having now.
DOes this sound like a problem w/ my processor? the dvd-rom drive? Any help
would be appreciated...

Hard drive churning....

2004-06-28 Thread Erik Ness
Greetings,
I've got a dual USB iBook and have just begun using OSX in earnest.
Of late the hard drive seems to be quite active for 15 or 20 minutes,
even though I'm not using it, and indeed no programs are even open.
Is this OSX maintenance, or early warning of HD failure? FWIW, it's a
20gb drive, and it's about 85% full.

Cheers,
Erik

At my desk, I prefer to have my powerbook on a stand, and use an
external USB mouse and keyboard. I do not currently use an external
display with my Powerbook, I use the internal LCD at the desk. I also
have a couple of extra firewire drives for storing data that I only
need at home (my Itunes Library is one of those things), one of the
drives is used as a backup for my internal drive on my powerbook. I use
carbon copy cloner once a week to make a full bootable backup of my
internal powerbook drive in case something happens. I bought an extra
AC adapter as well (non-Apple). I can leave one at my desk at my
office, and leave one at home.

FWIW, I really like my 17 PowerBook and I don't find it hard to carry
at all.

As far as shipping times, those will be listed right on Apple's web
site when you go through the ordering process.

Used an Ethernet cable to network the two computers.
Have you turned on AppleTalk in Directory Services
(Applications/Utilities) on the iBook? Also make sure it is on in the
Network preferences pane. It can only be active on one port at a time,
either wired ethernet or Airport.
FWIW, I can't see any older OS from my OSX machines either. I have
computers running 7.5.5, 7.6.1, 8.1, and 9.2. All of them can see the
OSX computers via IP.

If you don't have a lot of RAM, OS X will make heavy use of virtual
memory and that will make your hard drive work a lot more. Having the
drive that full might be an issue as well.

Keyboard usage question

2004-06-28 Thread dan_A
Hi list-
My question may seem to be a little specialized and a non tech
problem. Below is a brief background, but the question that is below
the background should be in the area of general experience... regarding
the use of a USB keyboard to solve my problem. Thanks for your patience
and help.

I have a 15 800 MHz Ti-book in which I'm trying to create a dictionary
for Sanskrit/English. I'm using File Maker Pro 7 and a Sanskrit font
which works pretty well. Since Sanskrit has about twice as many letters
than English, I use alternate key strokes with the Keyboard Viewer and
the correct keyboard set up.

My question is about the use of the imbedded number pad. I can't get
it to work. Does anyone have experience using the number pad? If there
are limitations with it, does anyone know if a USB extended keyboard
will allow full accessibility to all the alternate characters assigned
to the keys?

BTW just a FWIW (For Whatever It's Worth) comment. You can pick up a
3/4-port Ethernet hub for $15 or less. That makes networking even two

cable for years to connect even to Performas. But with the price of
hubs so low these days, it's really better to go that way IMHO.
--Amen!
I have a 7200/90 that i've networked to my G4 tower. First thing i did
was install the highest operating system the 7200 would take- 9.1
Then I got rid of things that habitually annoyed me, including the web
sever extension (I mean, its a 10Base-T, for god's sake. Its not going
to be my sever machine!) Then, i started up file sharing-- which takes
a long time. If i recall properly, it was a hassle, but I could connect
either way.
One more thing, though if you've gotten this far, its probably fine --
make sure the appletalk extension has your ethernet port picked.
Sometimes if its powered off/unplugged for a long time, it'll pick the
most bizarre option, probably just to be funny. (what a sense of humor
the 7200 has...) And make sure your appletalk settings are otherwise
together.

I used my 7200 as a print server so i could still use my stylewriter
with my G3 via the printer port this way. (mac os X likes to disavow
any knowledge of the printer and modem ports, a cause of great pain,
but not networked printers). Bob is right in having a hub though, that
was the magic ingredient for this.

OT update-- i'm in the process of buying an iBook... I don't know the
seller, so hopefully its going to be legitimate. I can't wait to own a
gbook again. Cross your fingers for me!

Hi Claire,
I have a 17 1.33 GHz machine. Very nice, but a little large for
portability. Awesome screen, though.

My list of extras:
small optical mouse (I use a Macally iOptiJr)
extra battery
OWC keyboard cover (macsales.com)
6' USB cable
6' Firewire cable
cables that come with powerbook
auto power adapter

Can this be done only if the hard drive is, or has already been,
partitioned? I had always been under the impression that OS 9 had to be
 installed first.

To make a new partition on your computer, without reformatting your hard
drive, you should check out this cool program called VolumneWorks. See link
Below.

http://www.subrosasoft.com/thestore/default.php

On a related note, does Apple install OS 9 on all new machines? There
were restore disks for OS X, but they didn't supply any for OS 9.

OS 9 on all new machines is for running classic only. If you have your
software restore disk, and you select customize, you will see the option to
install classic. Just remember all new machines only boot into OS X. I hope
you are not under the impression that by installing classic on your new
G5's, that you will able to boot into OS 9. Those days are gone.

OS 9 was already installed by Apple. There's some legacy software that
some professor might want to use, so it might be needed.

I'm confused though. I thought Classic could only be invoked if a full
install of OS 9 were first installed. I guess I thought of Classic as
an emulator that wouldn't work without the actual full install of OS 9
being on the hard drive. Does the customize option mean that the
restore disks contain a version of OS 9 to make Classic work? Again, I
guess I'm thinking that the emulator (Classic) can't function
independently from the full install of OS 9.

So then i thought, if these machines ever need a clean install, will
Classic ever work if OS 9 were not first installed? I'm assuming the
lab still has copies of OS 9 on hand if need be.

Re: Flaky Pismo

2004-06-28 Thread Peter Stein
--snipped--
Buy(sic) the time I got to the Start Install page, it was totally blank except for the
start button. The subsequent install progress display was blank. Also, the install did
not take place, it keeps crashing about a minute into the install...
--snipped--

Since I didn't see a response in the digest, I'll throw my suggestion in:

Sounds like: bad memory, misaligned memory or overheating

I would: (with Pismo off)
1) remove battery, external devices, unplug AC
2) remove keyboard, metal cage, heat sink screw
3) carefully remove top RAM card from CPU daughtercard- was it loose?
4) carefully remove CPU daughtercard/heatsink through lifting- was it loose?
5) carefully remove lower RAM card from CPU daughtercard- was it loose?
6) thoroughly examine the RAM- do they match?
7) thoroughly examine the chips on the CPU daughtercard- do they appear discolored?
8) carefully examine the pins of the CPU daughtercard- are any bent?

At this point, if nothing appears odd, then make your best judgment call on the RAM -
put only one piece of RAM in as you reassemble. The installer does not require any
more that 64mb of ram, IIRC, so it should be simple enough to put it back together
(careful with the pins on the CPU daughtercard! and it DOES take a solid force to
press it in completely) and run your installer CD again. If problems remain, try the
other RAM card by itself as well.

Do you have a Hardware Test CD for your Pismo? I'd recommend letting that RUN FIRST.

Good luck!

Bob,

Just out of curiosity: What five OSes do you have?

One of the advantages of using an older PB is that it is not limited
to OS X.x. So I have the following Operating Systems:

8.5 which was what I was using when I installed the new drive.
8.6 which became my primary OS when I discovered that it didn't kill
anything that I had been using
9.1 which is installed primarily for tech support
9.2.2 for Classic and possible use if I hadn't been able to get my
USB printer Airport to run in 8.6
10.2.4 for OS X usage

If I wasn't limited to using the first 8GB on this PB, I would
install 10.3.4 on it as well. But I can't without overwriting 10.2.4,
which I'm not ready to do.

Actually, I have another OS installed. I always keep a backup copy
of my primary OS on another partition so that I can grab anything
from the System or Finder file, to any Extension or CP and copy them
to the primary System without having to reinstall or use TomeViewer.
That's why I have never done a clean install in all of the years that
I've used a Mac.

It is real and it is a finder window. In 10.2 open a window from the

preference for the window and choose a picture from the choices from the
bottom of the list. There are a number of available pic's to choose
from. There are no options for the pic. This was a new an unknown
feature for me. The line that I think is in question is at the bottom
and right sides and that would be for the scroll bars the left side is
missing this feature and therefore make the bleed of the pic. extend off

cable for years to connect even to Performas. But with the price of
hubs so low these days, it's really better to go that way IMHO.

Then, i started up file sharing-- which takes a long time.

The length of time starting up File Sharing depends on how much of
your drive you want to make available for sharing, and how many files
are in that part of the drive. Try sharing just one fairly small
partition or just a few multi-level folders, and it won't take any
time at all to startup FS.

If i recall properly, it was a hassle, but I could connect either way.

One of the potential problems when using a crossover cable is that
some units have to have AppleTalk started up simultaneously on both
units or AT won't start up at all. That's hard enough if you are
sitting where you can reach both keyboards at the same time, but
almost impossible if the computers are sitting more than 3 or 4 feet
from each other.

One more thing, though if you've gotten this far, its probably fine --
make sure the appletalk extension has your ethernet port picked.
Sometimes if its powered off/unplugged for a long time, it'll pick the
most bizarre option, probably just to be funny. (what a sense of humor
the 7200 has...)

That won't happen if you are using a hub, which was one of the
primary reasons I had in mind when I suggested it. The hub will keep
the network alive even if there isn't a second computer plugged into
it. So you won't get AppleTalk changing from Ethernet or Airport
to the modem/printer port without you knowing it.

OT update-- i'm in the process of buying an iBook... I don't know the
seller, so hopefully its going to be legitimate. I can't wait to own a
gbook again. Cross your fingers for me!

Best of luck with your purchase.

Classic is more like a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) than an
emulator. It runs a native PowerPC binary on the CPU, but isn't
allowed to access hardware directly. That's why some of the older OS
8/9 apps that tried to take direct control of your hardware don't
work in Classic but do when you boot a real OS 9 installation.

Well behaved apps use only the Mac OS APIs to talk to hardware (like
using QuickTime to access capture devices instead of doing it
directly). Those are generally the apps that run well in Classic.

Peace,
Drew

Re: Can OS 9 be installed?

The National Enquirer reports at 5:48 PM -0700 6/28/04, Brian L.
Matthews wrote:

And, yes Classic (OS 9) is an emulator under OS X, just like Virtual PC.

No, it's not. Virtual PC has to emulate the processor, Classic
doesn't (for a PowerPC application, for a 68k application it does,
but the same thing happens when booted into OS 9).

It's a matter of semantics, but I'm glad someone corrected the misstatement.

The Classic Environment is **not** an emulator.

technical warning
To quote Apple's Mac OS X documentation:

To the Mac OS 9 operating system that it hosts, Classic appears as
a new hardware platform. It implements hardware services using the
Mac OS X kernel environment (particularly the I/O Kit). The Classic
environment is not an emulator; Mac OS 9 runs natively in it.

An emulator converts hardware calls from one language/platform to
another. For example, Windows doesn't run on Mac hardware, so Virtual
PC emulates PC hardware so that Windows can run on the Mac.

The Classic Environment is actually a hardware abstraction layer.
OS 9 runs on Mac hardware, and was in fact written for Mac hardware.
But since you can't boot into two operating systems at the same time,
one of the two OSes has to be in control of the hardware.

Classic approximates the underlying hardware of your computer, and
then OS 9 loads on top of that hardware abstraction layer. Any
hardware access needed by OS 9 running in Classic is then funneled
through OS X. (This allows OS X to manage all hardware access.) For
example, when a Classic application accesses the Ethernet port on
your Mac, what's really happening is that the Classic application is
accessing the Ethernet port of Classic, which is then tunneled
through Mac OS X to the actual Ethernet port. So remember, that
Classic uses the OS X AppleTalk. You should have AppleTalk turned on
in both Systems.(??)

The key point here is hardware vs. software. To put it (overly)
simply, emulation is used to make something run where it can't,
whereas hardware abstraction is used to allow two compatible things
to run cooperatively. Although Virtual PC and the Classic Environment
appear to operate similarly from the user's point of view, how they
do what they do is much different.
end of technical description

If your computer can boot into OS 9:
Both as a Classic system environment and as a native OS 9 boot
system, there is no difference between a Classic System Folder and
a native System Folder; they are one and the same.

You can copy it to your heart's content, and if you put it on an OS X
system and try to boot Classic, and it needs some special files to do
so, the OS X system will put what it needs into the System Folder
before booting it; doing so does **nothing** that affects booting it
into native OS 9. However, not all of OS 9 runs when it is being
used as Classic. Some of OS 9's functions are subsumed by OS X.

to two operating sysytems. I quickly left OS 9 behind, having no legacy

I remember that OS X 10.0 was sold in a box with the OS 9 CD. Was the

So, all I have that is incompatible with OS X is a collection of those
Apple advertising demos that were played in Apple Stores on a loop. The
installer requires OS 9. I'll try a custom install without OS 9 and see
if I can get them to run.

What extras do you find essential when owning a powerbook? I've read
about stands, extra batteries, displays/mice/keyboards for home use,
etc. (I'm sure one person's necessity will be another person's
  luxury.)

Hi Claire,

I have a 17 1.33 GHz machine. Very nice, but a little large for
portability. Awesome screen, though.

My list of extras:

small optical mouse (I use a Macally iOptiJr)
extra battery
OWC keyboard cover (macsales.com)
6' USB cable
6' Firewire cable
cables that come with powerbook
auto power adapter

smiles,
Jamie

Keeping it as cool as possible would be my #1 priority. Heat is the
biggest enemy of your PB. So I would suggest getting some sort of
device to let air circulate under your unit. Anything from a CoolPad
to one of the many PB stands or USB fan units that are available.

The second thing you may want to consider is some sort of surge
protection. Either a surge protector (a quality one, not a $15
el-cheapo) or a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) that has built-in
surge protection. You really don't need a UPS for a PB, the
rechargeable batteries act like a UPS. But it depends on what else
you may want to plug into it (not a laser printer though). Power
surges and spikes are dangerous to a PB.

**Important note**: Be sure whatever you get, that you can plug in
your Ethernet cable (if you are going to have a network with a hub,
as well as your phone line (if you are using a dial-up connection).
If either of these are not connected to the surge protector/UPS, you
are left vulnerable and IMO might as well not have any protection at
all.

Thirdly (speaking of cables in Jamie's list above), if you hobnob
with other Mac enthusiasts (either friends, co-workers or User's
Group members), you may find a 6-10' Ethernet cable extremely
valuable. Being able to quickly connect to another Mac to get a file
or an update can be extremely valuable. If it were me, I would get a
crossover cable so that you will be able to hookup directly to older
units that don't have the ability of auto-sensing the cable. But you
can't use a crossover cable to connect to an Ethernet hub, say at
your brother-in-law's house.

P.S. The obvious necessity, of course, with a portable is a carrying case. :-)

Just my $.02 worth,

Bob

While researching chillers and coolers for an article I wrote for the Double Click
newsletter, I purchased an ACTIVE cooler from www.xoxide.com for an amazingly low
price (less than $15.00 I think) that specced out to exactly the same as several very
similar-looking devices that were twice the price. Its an acrylic plastic angle-plate
with TWO USB-powered fans built into it and a USB port and on/off switch. The iBook
sits on little rubber knobs and the fans provide a wash of cooling air to the
underside of the iBook that blows out from under it in all directions. I tested it
extensively with ThermograpgX and a G4 iBook and I always use it now when playing
DVDs. Drops the temperature of different parts of the iBook somewhere between 6 and 10
degrees depending on which of the four component sensors are charted.
Some passive devices i looked at cost hundreds of dollars and some were fancy machined
billet aluminum or some space-age conductor. The chiller sold by XOXIDE.COM is cheap
and cheerful. I only use it when running on the AC Power Adapter so I don't know how
it would affect battery life.

Best regards.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as the OS 9 hard disk drivers were
installed during format. If not, it may still be possible to install
it but only for use in Classic, not booting. Otherwise you would
need to reformat the disk.

If you only plan on using it for Classic or minimal use booted in 9
then do a custom install and de-select the things you don't need.

Classic is not an emulator. It is run as a program under OS X. An
emulator like Virtual PC emulates the Pentium processor and runs
DOS/Windows on that. Classic runs as a program within OS X but it
still uses the PPC processor to run programs.

Under OS 7 through 9 with the introduction of the PPC processor older

Then, i started up file sharing-- which takes a long time.
The length of time starting up File Sharing depends on how much of
your drive you want to make available for sharing, and how many files
are in that part of the drive. Try sharing just one fairly small
partition or just a few multi-level folders, and it won't take any
time at all to startup FS.
Startup time is more dependent on the number of folders rather than
files. It is the folders that have access control (under pre-OS X)

If you share a single folder only and it still takes too long to
startup then you probably need to delete the AppleShare PDS file
which is an invisible file at the root of any disk that has ever been
shared. If it gets corrupt it can slow or even stall FileSharing
startup.

Keeping the WaveLAN card in at all times...Wallstreet PDQ...

2004-06-28 Thread Michelle Klein-Hass
Hi guys, quick question...

I know about all the problems that exist with the Wallstreet card cage. I want
to know if I can leave my WaveLAN Silver card in permanently even when I am
using wired Ethernet like I usually do. If I can keep the card in forever
maybe I'll never have to deal with the dead card cage situation.

Oh yeah, I'm going to give the AirPort drivers a go. I want to be able to run
Classic Stumbler and the IOXperts driver isn't supported by Classic Stumbler.

Take care,
Michelle
