The Personal LaserWriter NTR is an AppleTalk printer so, assuming your
bridge is working fine, the printer name should appear in Print Setup
Utility when you choose to add an AppleTalk printer.

Re: DVD Issue on Lombards.

2004-08-09 Thread Marcin Wichary
Since the overlay effectively bypasses the video card, if you take
the
screenshot (or put it on desktop), you only end up with the pixels in
the strange colour.
But why would this be the case for PLAYING THE DVD on an external
screen,
likew a TV ( via S-Video)?
That's a different issue.
You need to set the external screen to be the primary screen. Then
the DVD will playback on the external screen fine (though it won't
play back on the internal screen).

A pain in the butt. But it's not unique to Macs - my fiancee's
comcrap has a similar requirement for playing DVDs on a TV.
True. In many cases, the overlay mechanism only works on a primary
display. Had the same issue on my PC with TV decoding card; it wouldn't
work on an external display, rendering my whole carefully thought-out
setup impossible.

Andrew, said:

Well, where can you see what is the primary screen? I see nothing in
screen prefs nor in DVD player.

The help for DVD player say *you can* watch movies on a TV, but gives no
direct info on how to set things up, rahter it references the doc for the
TV set and, ehm, DVD player. Though I'd say it's obvious how to do it,
beside this little problem.
Then the help goes on to say Movies can be shown on the primary or
secondary screen. Simply move the movie window to the screen where you
want to display the movie, which I did. So I did everything by the docs
and it didn't work.
So are you saying, other rules apply for my Powerbook G4 / 400?

It sounds like a simple solution but you'll have to tell us more about your
Netgear settings, like whether the access to the Netgear is protected, or
your network, etc.

I didn't check Mplayer, because 99% of the comments
said Non Working (from Version Tracker).
Anyway, I can't play QuickTime movies on Full Screen
(with decent performance) and if you find an
application wich has better performance, it doesn't
say that Apple shuldn't support it's own hardware
because one application works. The title refers to the
DVD issue (and Apple didn't make ANYTHING to solve
it).

ATI made drivers for Windows XP wich supports the same
card (you can download updates ! ! !).
Their Service Support told me that is up to Apple to
support that chip.
Apple suggest to switch from Millions to Thousands of
Colors for better performance.

There aren't replace parts for that Drive.
The only way is to buy a non working one (wich can't

An Apple service will replace the entire part and it

Re: DVD Issue on Lombards.

2004-08-09 Thread Alejandro
Well, the iBook 366 *CAN*.

If you believe that only the G3 processor counts, do
the following:

Boot on OS 9 and from System/Libary/Extensions, move
all the ATI files to another place.

Boot on OS X and check Full Screen with any
Application (mplayer, QuickTime or another).

When placing the Extensions on the Extensions folder,
trash the Extensions.kextcache and the

The ATI Rage 128 has decent support on OS X.

unfortunately also spreading FUD and erroneous information about the
problem, at least regarding what can play or not on other models beside
your own, which doesn't help anyone.
I don't care what Apple do as long as I can watch DVDs, MPG4s and S-VCD

vice versa, but unless you're going to join or start a class action suit
I kindly suggest you give this issue a rest as we're all just repeating

solutions for other models, especially regarding those that *do* have
hardware decoding. Like my Powerbook G4 / 400.

It seems this is the actual video card in several of the early Powerbook
G4s and iBooks if judging of the specs at Everymac:
http://everymac.com/systems/by_casetype/portable.html

So the early Titanium models, the 400 and 500 at least, have hardware
acceleration builtin. I still would like to know what triggers the
hardware decoding, but I suppose I have to ask on a programmers list or
something.

If Apple keeps making the same thing (unsupporting

OS 10.3.5

2004-08-09 Thread Aaron Willems
I just installed OS 10.3.5. I've been running it for 2 hours now with no
problems. I give this advice to anyone who's planning on installing it. Be
sure to boot off your Panther CD first, and repair the Boot Disk, followed
by repairing disk permissions. DO THIS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE UPDATE! After
you install the update, be sure to boot off the CD one more time, and run
disk permissions once again.

By following this simple advice, you can avoid most major catastrophes.

seem to not get further by you just repeating the same info again, I
don't want to continue. Unless you want to also learn together with other
people about solutions that work with other models and the general concepts.
I didn't mean to be rough, but I felt we weren't getting anywhere with
the specific Lombard problem.
The good thing that came out from this line of discussions for me, was
that I learned that there is hardware accelaration in several early
models, just as I suspected. Unfortunately not so with the Lombard.

Re: DVD on 500mhz G3 Only?

2004-08-09 Thread Dan K
All PBs from Pismo on have mpeg playback hardware as part of their ATI
graphics subsystems. The Lombard 400 (and some 333) have a:
ZiVA PC DVD Decoder
Some configurations have a built-in DVD decoder IC: a ZiVA-PC made by
C-Cube Microsystems. The IC provides video support for a DVD drive in the
expansion bay.
In addition to the video timing generation and DVD system functions, the
ZiVA-PC IC provides the following decoding functions:
* Linear PCM audio decoding
* MPEG-2 audio and video decoding.
* AC-3 decoding and downmixing from 5.1 to 2 audio channels
The ZiVA-PC IC controls 2 MB of synchronous DRAM, enabling the IC to
provide full NTSC and PAL video decoding.
FYI, I culled the relevant graphics system info from the hardware
devnotes for PowerBooks Wallstreet to 1gHz TiBook and put it all here:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/pb_video.html

Apple's hardware devnotes:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Hardware2.html

I didn't include any iBook infos on this page, but Mikael is correct that
the 366/466 iBooks both support DVD playback with their ATI RAGE Mobility
128 graphics. The earlier iBooks use the ATI RAGE Mobility chips which
AFAIK do NOT support DVD playback.

which installed WishShell. Took these out, and restarted, problem remains.
Also the Applescript icon has shown up on the menu

I've also just discovered that classic will not launch either.

It occurred to me that I have classic versions of the software in question in
the OS9 applications folder, to run when I boot in 0S9, but have never had
problems.

Try to create a guess account and try the above applications when logged in
that account. If the problem persists, then we can only assume that this
PureData application did change something to the system and you might have
to re-install from scratch to get rid of the problem. However, if the
applications launch fine, then there is something wrong with your account.
You could try to rename the Library folder in your account, log out, then
log in. See if the applications launch fine or not. If they now launch fine,
something is wrong in your Library folder. You can remove the newly created
Library folder, rename the original one and, again, log out and log back in.
Then, try renaming the folders inside your Library folder until you find the
culprit...

Re: DVD on 500mhz G3 Only?

2004-08-09 Thread Andrew Kershaw
All PBs from Pismo on have mpeg playback hardware as part of their ATI
graphics subsystems.
Hey Dan.
Thanks kind of a stretch, wouldn't you say? Those graphics systems
don't have dedicated hardware for decoding MPEG-2. Rather, they have
enough horsepower and a few extensions that lend themselves to the
processing required for decoding MPEG-2.

The nuance you distinguish (though not technically incorrect)
confuses the issue - lots of people don't know the difference between
hardware and software decoding, and this kind of argument confuses
the matter. I don't mean to argue; I just see a lot of FUD around
people's understanding of what constitutes hardware decoders.

Anyway, the first Mac with GPU DVD playback support was actually the beige G3.
The Rage II+DVD in my beige G3 has DVD decoding support, but APPLE
NEVER WROTE A STINKING DRIVER (even for OS 9). Not that I mind too
much - the Rage II+ is a piece of junk, anyway. The next rev's Rage
Pro was 100% better. And I never had a DVD-ROM in my beige G3,
anyway. ;-)

Peace,
Drew
