Re: DVD Issue on Lombards.
Since the overlay effectively bypasses the video card, if you take the screenshot (or put it on desktop), you only end up with the pixels in the strange colour. But why would this be the case for PLAYING THE DVD on an external screen, likew a TV ( via S-Video)? That's a different issue. You need to set the external screen to be the primary screen. Then the DVD will playback on the external screen fine (though it won't play back on the internal screen). A pain in the butt. But it's not unique to Macs - my fiancee's comcrap has a similar requirement for playing DVDs on a TV. True. In many cases, the overlay mechanism only works on a primary display. Had the same issue on my PC with TV decoding card; it wouldn't work on an external display, rendering my whole carefully thought-out setup impossible. Andrew, said: You need to set the external screen to be the primary screen. Well, where can you see what is the primary screen? I see nothing in screen prefs nor in DVD player. The help for DVD player say *you can* watch movies on a TV, but gives no direct info on how to set things up, rahter it references the doc for the TV set and, ehm, DVD player. Though I'd say it's obvious how to do it, beside this little problem. Then the help goes on to say Movies can be shown on the primary or secondary screen. Simply move the movie window to the screen where you want to display the movie, which I did. So I did everything by the docs and it didn't work. I found a clue: The RAGE Mobility 128 provides remarkable multimedia functionality, all in true 32-bit color, and incorporates an integrated MPEG-2/DVD decoder with iDCT and motion compensation, which enables full frame rate DVD playback combined with very low CPU utilization. http://www.active-hardware.com/english/archives/arc8-2000.html It seems this is the actual video card in several of the early Powerbook G4s and iBooks if judging of the specs at Everymac: http://everymac.com/systems/by_casetype/portable.html So the early Titanium models, the 400 and 500 at least, have hardware acceleration builtin. I still would like to know what triggers the hardware decoding, but I suppose I have to ask on a programmers list or something. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I don't care what Apple do as long as I can watch DVDs, MPG4s and S-VCD titles. I do. You don't have that problem, so I understand you don't care. If I'm egocentered, I believe you are too. You don't like to talk about problems you don't have. Instead of taking legal actions, I made a different choice. I told that to Apple, and they didn't like it. I don't care if Apple likes my choice or not, but I will not change my mind until Apple fixes that. If Apple keeps making the same thing (unsupporting it's own hardware), I'm sorry about them. OS 10.3.5
I just installed OS 10.3.5. I've been running it for 2 hours now with no problems. I give this advice to anyone who's planning on installing it. Be sure to boot off your Panther CD first, and repair the Boot Disk, followed by repairing disk permissions. DO THIS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE UPDATE! After you install the update, be sure to boot off the CD one more time, and run disk permissions once again. By following this simple advice, you can avoid most major catastrophes. Re: DVD on 500mhz G3 Only?
All PBs from Pismo on have mpeg playback hardware as part of their ATI graphics subsystems. The Lombard 400 (and some 333) have a:
ZiVA PC DVD Decoder Some configurations have a built-in DVD decoder IC: a ZiVA-PC made by C-Cube Microsystems. The IC provides video support for a DVD drive in the expansion bay. In addition to the video timing generation and DVD system functions, the ZiVA-PC IC provides the following decoding functions: * Linear PCM audio decoding * MPEG-2 audio and video decoding. * AC-3 decoding and downmixing from 5.1 to 2 audio channels The ZiVA-PC IC controls 2 MB of synchronous DRAM, enabling the IC to provide full NTSC and PAL video decoding.
FYI, I culled the relevant graphics system info from the hardware devnotes for PowerBooks Wallstreet to 1gHz TiBook and put it all here: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/pb_video.html Apple's hardware devnotes: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Hardware2.html I didn't include any iBook infos on this page, but Mikael is correct that the 366/466 iBooks both support DVD playback with their ATI RAGE Mobility 128 graphics. The earlier iBooks use the ATI RAGE Mobility chips which AFAIK do NOT support DVD playback. Re: DVD on 500mhz G3 Only?
All PBs from Pismo on have mpeg playback hardware as part of their ATI graphics subsystems. Hey Dan. Thanks kind of a stretch, wouldn't you say? Those graphics systems don't have dedicated hardware for decoding MPEG-2. Rather, they have enough horsepower and a few extensions that lend themselves to the processing required for decoding MPEG-2. The nuance you distinguish (though not technically incorrect) confuses the issue - lots of people don't know the difference between hardware and software decoding, and this kind of argument confuses the matter. I don't mean to argue; I just see a lot of FUD around people's understanding of what constitutes hardware decoders. Anyway, the first Mac with GPU DVD playback support was actually the beige G3. The Rage II+DVD in my beige G3 has DVD decoding support, but APPLE NEVER WROTE A STINKING DRIVER (even for OS 9). Not that I mind too much - the Rage II+ is a piece of junk, anyway. The next rev's Rage Pro was 100% better. And I never had a DVD-ROM in my beige G3, anyway. ;-) Peace, Drew -- Author of ClassicStumbler email: web: http://www.alksoft.com/ Visit the PowerBook 5300 FAQ! http://www.alksoft.com/5300_FAQ/ -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
