What I was wondering was if there was some kind of groove, say, into which the tab on the left side had to slide in and out of (the tab on the right side slides in and out with absolutely no problem) and that required some special trick when it came to display removal like having to pull the display up to the left while pushing forward, chant I hate Bill Gates three times, and throw salt over your shoulder :-) Sounds like a burr along the edge of the hinge/bracket or the tab is what's giving me grief; just have to see what I can do, I guess. No volume level adjustment has any affect on the start-up chime. I used the slider in Sys Prefs pane to (1) lowest before off, (2) all the way down to off, and (3) muted sound, then restarted and each time chime was very loud. Once desktop comes up, the volume seems to be where I last set it, which it still quite loud at the lowerst setting. Previously, I set the volume to three segments using the keyboard volume keys for average comfortable listening for myself. Now, one segment is too loud. I am quite stimied by this. My Pismo is over 4 years old now, and a couple times recently the battery has completely died on me before I could charge it. I think it even died once beyond the point of holding the Pismo in Sleep mode. I think the volume anomaly started soon after that incident. Re: 1 printer, 1 Mac, 2 accounts Hi Mary, After setting up the second account, I tried simply printing first, the printer name shows and is selectable in the Page Setup and Print dialog menus, but the print jobs just hang. Then I did go to the Printer Setup utility and followed everything the Mac OS Help had to offer, but the printer does not show up in any Printer Utility windows no matter how many times I refresh. Okay, I just tried printing again, this time in the Print dialog window there is an exclamation point by the HP printer name. This brings up the Printer Utility program. The printer is there, so I don't know what else to do at this point. When I send the print job, everything goes as normal, I get an blue white spraling progress bar and then the solid blue progress bar and it looks like normal, yet part-way it just stops and says Jobs Stopped. When I Start Jobs it just repeats the same over again. This is the exact same behavior in both accounts. I no longer can print from the original account. I am currently at a loss, so any ideas are appreciated. Thank you. A question regarding OpenGL. . .
Hello all, Is OpenGL user configurable? Or is this one of those background things? And is there a certain (gulp) video ram requirement just to make it work? Or is it always working? I would uninstall and then reinstall the printer drivers. This has cured similar behavior for me in the past. Next Powerbook after Lombard?
Hi, I have a Lombard thats driving me crazy. I really love it but will probably end up getting rid of it because I have struggled way to many hours trying to get OSX on it with no success. I upgraded the battery, bought two new certified mac chips 256 and 128 from OWC, a new shell, a 10 gig drive, etc. I was hoping to keep it alive. I even bought a 2.5 external enclosure and installed 10.3 (Panther) on it from another computer and reinstalled it into the Lombard. It starts to startup in 10 but then I get a blue screen and mouse is frozen or a kernal panic. Needless to say no success. Someone suggested 10.2 but I don't have a copy of that and getting tired of investing $ into it. Is there away to upgrade the cards inside? And what would I get? Or should I get rid of it - and what would be the next step up? Would need it to handle most graphic programs like adobe, macromedia, office etc in the OSX operating system? I can't afford a brand new one right now, what would be a step up from the Lombard? I really love my Lombard and would hate to see it go - wish I could find a way to keep it. Hi Linda, Similar problems over here with our Lombard: I was able to install OS 10.0.3 using the original 64 MB RAM chip the Lombard came with. From 10.1 up, one needs al least 128 MB but all the RAM upgrades I've tested, in various configurations up to and including 512 MB, invariable gave me a freeze or kernel panic. So, I would advise you not to waste any money on a copy of OS 10.2. Rather, try to locate someone with a Lombard who has been able to install Panther, see if you can borrow that working RAM chip to install Panther and then swap it for the RAM you have (apparently, for installing the Lombard is much pickier then for actually running 10.3). Hi Linda: There are lots of people on this list who have nursed their PowerBooks and iBooks through many many years of service and have fixed hardware problems that I¹d never bother trying to so I¹ll let them advise you there. Don¹t get me wrong, I admire these guys and when it comes to desktop computers I am the same. I just tend to view notebooks as (very expensive) disposables and my work lets me finance them in that fashion. I¹ve owned two G3 based iBooks and now have a G4 alBook and I use the software you mention so I can give you a few ideas about what to expect. The original iBook (clamshell with a 300mHz G3) has enough horsepower to run OS X 10.3 and the Adobe Creative Suite but there are a few disadvantages. The two big disads are the screen resolution (800x600) and anemic video-card. The programs won¹t run fast but I used Photoshop 7, InDesign 2, and Word X on that computer to put out a monthly full color newsletter for almost a year. Adobe¹s reliance on screen hogging palettes sometimes made me scream but even though I had access to desktops with more power and larger screens the convenience of being able to use the iBook anywhere over-rode the inconvenience of a slower computer and smaller screen. Speaking of slower computer, I noticed the speed difference most when booting up the computer, loading software, and working with large documents. For example, I once timed my tangerine startup at 4.5 minutes from turning it on to finishing loading the last start-up application. Thankfully that was something I didn¹t have to do very often. I had the opportunity to replace my tangerine with a 600mHz dual USB iBook and the difference between the two was dramatic. Startup and application launch times were nearly halved. Everything was peppier - delays that I¹d never noticed before became apparent - so much so that the beige G3 desktop I was using at work became nearly intolerable to use. But I think the big deal was moving from that 800x600 display to the new iBook¹s 1024x768. Suddenly I could leave a couple palettes on the screen while working in Photoshop and InDesign. Word¹s text format palette now became really useful. This had a big impact on my efficiency. One of the last clamshell iBook models had a 466mHz G3 and I used one for a couple weeks. It was noticeably faster than my tangerine but the difference wasn¹t as dramatic as that of the 600mHz dual USB model. For this reason, I suspect the 500mHz dual USB model wouldn¹t be as good a deal as the 600mHz model. Prices on the TiBook are very reasonable at this time but I strongly recommend against the TiBook for one simple reason: the hinges. The hinge assembly, more specifically the metal case where the hinge attaches, is weak. Most of the people I know who have a TiBook that is 2 years or older have either had to have a hinge (or both) replaced or are now nursing a weak hinge and putting off the inevitable. The repair is not inexpensive and since it often requires replacing the bottom case it can be more expensive the the value of the computer. The original 12² alBook is also worth mentioning. It shares the dual USB iBooks form factor but has a G4 processor. There¹s a lot to like about this computer but when we got one in at work I eagerly put it through its paces and was disappointed. Its performance was little better than the 800mHz G3 iBook¹s in real world use. Scott, 1.Have you repaired permissions? That can sometimes help. At least it does for me. 2. Go to printer utility; highlight the printer, what does it say under location? 3. Click on add at the top of the box. Another box should come up. Does it say auto select at the bottom of that box? If not, highlight your printer and click add at the bottom. 4. Click utility at the top of the box, pick test print. All this should be done while in the 2nd account. You may have to repair permissions again after these changes. If these don't work, I don't know what to tell you. One other thing. You're using OS 10, but are you working in classic at the time. I have 2 different drivers for mine. It's a Belkin, a couple years old, has three wired ports and wireless, it's been used with wireless cards in 3 different PCs, my old Powerbook, and an iBook I was cleaning up to sell, as well as a USB wireless PC adapter and an ethernet wireless adapter for the G3 iMac downstairs - no other machine has ever made the wired one disconnect, though *once* a month or so ago it stopped transmitting wirelessly, so had to be reset through the machine that's connected with a cable. Hmmm, sorry, I don't have any experience with the Belkin, but I would be tempted to say that it's the problem. -Laurent. I too agree it sounds like the router. Power it down and reset it to default as per the instructions that came with it. The router still functions fine with a PC laptop and the ethernet-wireless iMac, and with the old Powerbook up until I got rid of her. It gets reset every time the iBook kills the wired connection. The orange light that says the machine's transmitting or receiving data still lights up when it's not working, the machine just can't find the host. So what model would be a good next step up that would take 10.3 and run all the current programs??? I guess that would depend on the money you can spend. If I were in your situation, though, I think I'd probably go for a used 800 MHz iBook G4: by now reasonably priced but still petty powerful and well suited for normal use. Folks, OK. . .we all know that one USB port can host over 100 devices. . .but I have only been able to find 4 port hubs. Why is this? Is there something about USB I don't understand? Funny you should ask this question because last night I went looking to replace my 4 port hub. It seems that 4 and 7 are the magic number. Check out Buy.com and you¹ll find several 7 port hubs. yo-yo adapter sound question
Hello, I have had an adapter replaced under the 4402 G3 adapter recall. However, the yo-yo adapter makes a slight buzzing sound where the cord plugs into the yo-yo connector. Black Screen of Death?!
Hello, Well, it looks like my roommates iBook has officially died. Unless anyone here knows what happened to it. Now it won't boot all way. It will get to just before the login window comes up, then the screen goes to black, with white text saying, Darwin BSD: loginwindow failed to execute. Does the Mac now have a Black Screen of Death reminiscent of the old PC days of the Blue Screen of Death? different Wallstreet English keyboards?
Hello, I have seen two Wallstreet powerbooks and they had different, but both in English, keyboards- on the bottom row one has a symbol for both Option keys and the Enter key. In the next row there is a symbol for the Shift keys and the tilde/accent key is located next to the 'z', instead of in the upper left. In the next row there is a symbol for the CapsLock key and an extra key with line symbols. Thus the Return key is shaped like an upside down L to fit the extra key. In the next row the Tab key has a symbol and the keys with lines symbols is missing (it's already in the row below). In the next row there is an unlabelled key with an underlined addition symbol and a swirl. The Delete key has a symbol. The top row of F keys are all labelled the same- both in numbers and the English writing above. Were these keyboards made for different countries or different models? Not sure what is going on, but there are times when the CD-ROM drive doesn't do anything, not even when it booted fine. There's a slight pause when OS X boots, when it looks for all connected drives, internal or otherwise. When this normal pause occurred on the iBook, the drive did nothing. After it booted, when you press eject on the keyboard, nothing. I'll try to boot it up with the CD-ROM, as sometimes the drive works. To get the best battery life, is it better to leave them on and plugged in and asleep all the time you're not using them, and keep them plugged in as much as possible when you are, or is periodically draining the battery better? I doubt anyone gets 5 hours out of one battery using OS X but I was able to come very close to that regularly with OS 9. I¹m afraid OS X isn¹t as power efficient as OS 9 was although Panther does seem to be more efficient than Jaguar and Jag was much better than Maine Coon Cat, or whatever 10.1 was. We regularly have posts about the best techniques for maximizing battery life. They involve a full and frank discussion of the issues and so far no one has died as a result of his/her wounds. grin In other words, this is an area where we tend to have some disagreement. I charge my batteries fully when I do plug in the computer and when I unplug it, whenever possible, I discharge it down to the 10 minute warning. My current PowerBook is 15 months old and the original battery still gives me a good 2 hours use. My newer battery gives me about 40 minutes more. Erasing hard drive
After a week of finding various firewire drives to back my hard drive up to, I am finally ready to erase my hard drive and hope that all the problems I have been having with the PB will disappear. Just wondering - would you guys suggest that I zero all data and start from scratch or would a normal erase likely resolve the software problems that may be responsible for plaguing my PB and causing the superdrive to stop working properly ? Amber The only real need to zero all data is if you fear someone would try to recover anything from your drive in the unlikely event someone stole your computer AND if you actually had data that would be considered necessary to find/recover. Yes, if you don't zero it out, it is possible to recover data from the drive after a re-format. But, this data would not be found by standard software running over it. In other words, Laurent is correct in saying that zero out data is something you really don't have to do. For me, working for the government, it's a requirement to use the zero out option for obvious reasons. Just wanted to add my two cents! Thanks, Amber Amber, Food for thought: I too was having problems with one of my PB's and decided to try something: I installed OS X Panther on my external Firewire drive; the drive that was meant to simply back up all of my data so I could re-format my main internal drive. What I found was quite disturbing. . .the exact same problems occurred running from the external drive only after about 30 minutes in operation! While this may not be true for you, I'm still at a loss as what is causing my issues, which is odd delays in some of my apps. Just food for thought. . . Re: Next Powerbook after Lombard?
I have a lombard 333 running 10.3.7. Memory is 128 on the bottom and 256 on the top. Top was bought at OWC. It runs fine with no problems. When trying to install updates to OS10, don't use the combos. That's the info I got from the apple store. Instead of 10.2.8 combo, do the 10.2.6 and then the 10.2.8. I had 10.2.8 installed on a 4g drive. I replaced it with a 10g. No problems with either one. Hi Zoltan, Although I did not initially realize it, I am now thinking that there is a pretty good chance that Panther may be responsible or partly responsible for the problems I have been having. I have had incredibly slow start ups, endless crashes, and significant delays in some of the applications. Then the disk drive stopped working properly.
