Re: Getting satisfaction from Apple

2005-02-03 Thread Dylan Moore
Amen,
I've had apple replace so much stuff while being nice about it that
it's really sold me on the company. The list includes three ipods, out
of warranty, parts in a G3 bronze that wasn't originally mine, and was
a year out of warranty(didn't even have apple care!) and the entire
logic board out of my G4 desktop a month after apple care was up
because of some flaky processor errors. I know not everyone can have a
good experience, and I know i've certainly had my fair share of karma
with getting hardware repairs, so thats why i'm on this list, in case
someone comes along with a problem I can help out with ( =

Wether you get applecare or not isn't my choice- but i've never been
disappointed by getting it.
Thanks all

Re: New 12 PB

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew F.
Other than watching movies, I just couldn't think of anything that the 15
would do appreciably better than the 12, while of course it wouldn't travel
as well.

There is also the price difference, with the 15 combo drive version costing
about $300 more than the 12 superdive version.

Finally, I already have a nice Brenthaven case for the 12, not to mention a
second battery that I purchased barely 6-months-ago, neither of which would
work with the 15.

 the

 told
that they only had the 15, so I went to look at it, but the 12
 models got
there about an hour before I did.

As I am all finished with school, I thought that perhaps the 15 model
 would
be a better fit, as I no longer truck my laptop all over the greater
 LA area
day in and day out, but looking at them side by side, the 12 was just
 just
so much sexier, and well, I couldn't resist.

Part of it also was the EXTREMELY positive experience that I had with
 my
previous 12 G4 (1.0 GHz), and while I'm sure that the 15 is just as
reliable and well made, the 12 really fits the way I use a laptop.

So far, I really don't notice much of a performance difference,
 although my
1GHz book already had a fast 5400RPM TravelStar drive like the new one
 does.
There are small differences though. The new scrolling trackpad is very
nice, and only took me about a minute to get used to (no more SideTrack
driver), and the keyboard feels even better, if such a thing is
 possible.
I'm scoring the keyboard as just production variance, but it is
 possible
that somewhere in the last two years that Apple may have switched
 suppliers
or just improved on the design, as the keys are both quieter and a
 little
 crisper in feel, VERY NICE.

Everything else is about the same. I don't have any BT devices so I
 can't
test the new BT speed. I'll install Knights of the Old Republic and
Return to Castle Wolfenstein over the weekend and I'm sure the
 difference
of 50% faster processor speed and double the VRAM will make a huge
 difference.

In all, I cannot complain. With my student pricing (they gave it to
 me even
though I graduated at the end of July) I ended up with a 1.5GHz, 80GB
 HD,
SuperDrive and AirPort Extreme for the same price I paid for the 1GHz
 with a
40GB slow drive and the add-on AirPort Extreme card last year. What a
 deal!

Re: iBook G4 ext Batt

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
On all the international flights I have been on I have *never* seen a
power socket to plug up a laptop. Never. It has always made me wonder
if they really exist, I have just assumed that they are for the first
class. The flight is on a 747 on Quantis airlines. I have flown on
Quantis on a 747 and haven't seen a socket, either. Thus this monster
D-cell battery pack :) BTW, has anyone seen an Air socket on a flight
before? Because I would really like to know...

Hello, I have a 14 hour plane flight coming up and, wanting to watch
movies/play games the whole time, I built a 15 D-cell battery pack. The

that the power port on Apple's new laptops are standard 2.5mm stereo
audio jacks (surprise!) so I connected the pack (with the polarity in
mind) to a 2.5mm plug, connected to the ibook, and it works. My
question is: at what voltage will the iBook so into sleep mode, if at
all? I heard somewhere not to go under 12 volts, to avoid damage to the
 iBook; is this true?

I don't think it's going to matter. When the menu bar ICON switches
from Charged to On Battery you may have reached the point where the
external battery pack isn't helping. I say may because it might
still be providing some power to run the computer and the iBook's
battery is providing the rest, I don't know for sure, it depends on
the internal power circuitry. You could test it by monitoring the
current from the battery pack and reduce the voltage (use fewer and
fewer cells). When the On Battery ICON comes on if the pack is
still supplying significant current then it is helping.

I would at a minimum put a fuse right off the battery pack.

Have you checked into auto/air adapters (and if your flight has outlets).

4, If I chain the two routers together by
plugging one of the ports on the wireless router
into a Lan port on the non-wireless router I can
print but I can't access the internet wirelessly.

Clearly there is some funky network stuff going
on here but it is way out of my league. Any
suggestions? Where do I look for help?

Thanks, Mark

I don't know if anyone here can help you just getting the printer to
work on the wireless router or not, but number 4 is the correct way to
connect the two routers (LAN - LAN). Though before you do that you are
going to have to connect to the wired router, login, and turn off its
DHCP server. That should fix your problems.

TiBook DVI 667 vs. AlBook 1GHz 12 ???

2005-02-03 Thread Larry le Mac
After all the thinking, contemplating and talking I have
now got my 12 AlBook, the one with the dent and
twisted chassis (not too bad damage as it happens).
However, I have also got myself a TiBook DVI 667MHz,
i.e. the 1280x854 revised model, with lots of cracked
paint (= perfect repainting object).
My question is, does anyone have a direct real world
experience comparison between these two ?
While the 12 is real neat, the 15 is something else,
like this AlBook 15 (not mine, but work's)...
Any opinions gratefully received. :o)

AirPort in TiBook ???

2005-02-03 Thread Larry le Mac
As people have mentioned in our AirPort discussions, as well
as the seller of my new TiBook (my second to date), the
reception/transmission is not good, especially when one
actually uses the computer (doh!) and covers the case with
one's hands.
What is the best option for wireless ?
At least this computer has a PCMCIA slot which means
802.11g is feasable, with an external antenna!!
Or maybe a USB adapter, memory stick style thing... ?
Any thoughts ???

Re: Anyone still using the Powerbook G3 Kanga Original

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew
I have an immaculate Kanga that I use as a backup in
case my 12 G4 goes down, or for when I get fits of
nostalgia and want to play Marathon or Doom II.

It is still a nice machine, though it is very thick
and heavy by today's standards.

Mine only 32MB of ram, so I'm using OS 8.6 and both
RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler with great results.

If my G4 ever did have problems, this makes a fine
substitute, as it runs Office 2001 very well, gets
right on the wireless network with the cheap Lucent
card I bought last year, and overall feels just as
fast or faster (old OS and apps will do that) than the
new machine.

I have a kanga with a 5GB HD os 9.2.2 64MB
Ram and it has to be one of the best laptops I have used.
Only problem is finding the ram for it and the expansion bay the minimum for
that would be floppy and CD. I don't use mine any ore due to the screen
becoming cracked by my foot back in January of this year. But it was a great
laptop with very little flaws but the flaws are there. It lacks USB ports
but has Serial ADB and SCSI. Its proscessor is slower than a 250MHZ
Wallstreet or even a 233 with L2 Wallstreet. If you are strapped for cash I
recommend it it served me well and I have plans to replace its screen
eventually.

Re: AirPort in TiBook ???

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew
I would try and get your hands on one of the old
Lucent Orinoco cards. I have one (sold under the
Agere name) in my Kanga and the reception is even
better than my 12 AlBook's. I believe you can get
the same card on eBay under many names, including Dell
TrueMobile or Proxim, just be careful on the Proxim
cards because their new one won't work at all on a
Mac.

You will need a 3rd party driver for OSX or OS9, but
this is easy to find, and if you go with the Orinoco
card I can email it to you.

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew
Nope, 32MB is stock. Speaking of which, if you aren't
going to fix yours, how much would you want for the
32MB module inside, and even more important, how did
you get 9.2.2 on there?

I found links to hacks for Apple's updaters, but I
guess Apple got wise and changed the updaters as it no
longer works.

Do you still have the hacked updaters for 9.1 and
9.2.2?

Or maybe a USB adapter, memory stick style thing... ?

If you're looking for cheap, and I mean REALLY cheap, go here and check
this out: http://astro.temple.edu/~moshe/intersil/ I bought a 10 dollar
Syntax USB-400 usb tab, just to try this out, and it works surprisingly
well. Its cheap, and the drivers that come with it are windows, but no
worries. D-Link has drivers that you can modify to recognize the Syntax
instead, and it works just like D-Link's, only 1/3 the price. Its only
802.11b, but the range is pretty good and the price is awesome.
However, if you aren't using OS X then this doesn't help much...

Re: Printing and Wireless Connectivity

2005-02-03 Thread Mark D. Chapman
I am having trouble with my network and I don't
even know what to call the problem I am having or
 where to search for answers.
...snip...
Clearly there is some funky network stuff going
on here but it is way out of my league. Any
suggestions? Where do I look for help?
Are you sure that the wireless router you're trying to use supports
AppleTalk? I'm not sure how the serial to Ethernet bridge works in details,
but I would imagine that when it gets to the bridge, the information is
embedded into AppleTalk over Ethernet packets. What kind of bridge are you
using?
That is a good question. I don't know if the
wireless router supports appletalk or not. It
does claim to be OSX compatible. Nonetheless, my
problem seems to be different from this. The
wireless router does not even recognize the
Bridge as a live Ethernet device (the connection
light does not come on). The bridge I am using is
a Dayna EtherPrint-3. I don't know anything about
it but will look it up on the internet.

Thanks for suggesting an avenue of research, Mark

The user folder is a good start. Now, did you create any special network

The best way to do that is to clone your current startup disk onto another

Then, format, reinstall. When everything is working fine, then you can
restore the bits and pieces you need from the cloned installation.

connect the AC adapter, which makes for a mess of

I don't know if anyone here can help you just getting the printer to
work on the wireless router or not, but number 4 is the correct way to
connect the two routers (LAN - LAN). Though before you do that you are
going to have to connect to the wired router, login, and turn off its
DHCP server. That should fix your problems.
That's because the wireless router when it sees you trying to access
the Internet it tries to send it out the WAN port where there is
nothing. Look through the wireless router setup to see if there is
an option to disable the WAN routing or to make it just an access
point. Some of the routers I've used do this, some don't.

hi all,
Anyone still use one of these?:
http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3.shtml
I'd love to get my hands on a good unit but they are very hard to find
in Singapore. Any users care to share their experiences with the
Kanga?

I've used this wonderful machines, however, I sold my last one on eBay
a few weeks ago.
They are fast. I prefer OS 8.6 on them. However, I used 9.1 because a
couple of programs required it.
They are fast and rugged. I wish I still have mine. However, I need DVD
playing on my laptop, and every new program requires OS X.2 or .3 , so
I had to sell it, and with the funds I bought a Pismo.
Another thing, They have the BEST sound of ANY Mac laptop that I have
ever heard. Sound like a ghood quality portable stereo.

Hope this helps.

Powerbook.

As for warnings, I've found out that mine works much better if I turn

like the time when it would happen.

Re: Power Inverters

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew
I use a Kensington Universal adapter, which works both
on regular household AC, and with the switch of one
cord, works in cars and some airplanes (enpower tip).
Even better, it works with both my new G4 and my
ancient Kanga with a simple tip swap, and with a cheap
extra cable, can simultaneously charge my cell phone.

What is the best option for wireless ?

Best _first_ thing is try your new TiBook's AirPort performance and
_then_ decide if it's inadequate. I've got one DVI 667 which had rather
poor AP reception, so I did this mod:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ti_antennae.html A second DVI 667
however seems to get much stronger signal. Internally, I can't see any
differences between the two, go figure..

You also asked about the choice between 12 AlBook and TiBook. Hah! Since
you have 'em both, just try 'em! I've got both TiBooks and 12 iBooks,
and while I like the handy-ness of the smaller formfactor, the 1024x

I trust you won't be shy about announcing the result of _your_ comparo.

Re: Power Inverters

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Inverters are also bulky, and still require you to
connect the AC adapter, which makes for a mess of
cords in a tight environment (car).

Ok, I know what you're trying to say. But in a couple of years Apple
might stop using the current type of power adaptor plug and then you
have to sink another 20 bucks to get another auto adaptor, whereas if
you get an inverter you can keep it over the years, given it keeps
running (it shouldn't die really soon, unless you have a 130 watt power
adaptor or something :) To the original author of the thread, I guess
it comes down to form vs wallet, whichever is better in your opinion.

Re: Need help creating a live link in email

2005-02-03 Thread Harry D . Corsover
Thanks for the suggestion, Laurent, but I think this would defeat the
purpose of what I'm trying to send. Many people block attachments, or
won't take the time to open or download them. Or they fear viruses,

attention as soon as they click on it.

Now, if I could create an HTML document as you describe, and then paste
into the body of an email message, that might be worth a try.

hi all,

http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3.shtml
I'd love to get my hands on a good unit but they are very hard to
find in Singapore.

However, I need
DVD playing on my laptop, and every new program requires OS X.2 or .3
, so I had to sell it, and with the funds I bought a Pismo.
Another thing, They have the BEST sound of ANY Mac laptop that I have
ever heard. Sound like a ghood quality portable stereo.

Hope this helps.
Macnifico

For what it's worth, Pismo 400 and 500's are going for pennies on the
dollar on eBay these days. Think it's due to the newest Powerbooks
just released. I would recommend just getting the Pismo over the
Kanga. While the Kanga is a great machine, the Pismo still has most of
what made the Kanga great, but Firewire and USB as well. . .not to
mention full OS X support. I just saw a Pismo 400 on eBay the other
day with 512 meg RAM sell for only $390.00!! Depressing for me. . .I
bought my Pismo/500 new. . . for an amount I'm not ready to disclose.

Re: RE.: Anyone still using the Powerbook G3 Kanga Original

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew F.
The new PowerBooks should drop everything down in price. I got very lucky
and sold my 1.0 GHz 12 (Combo Drive, AE and 80GB HD) the day before the new
ones were announced and got $1000 for it, only $400 less than I paid for it
a year ago (student pricing), and 2/3 the cost of the 12 SuperDrive model
I'm typing this on now. Actually I sold my Pismo the day after which made
up the rest of the shortage, so I got the new PB without spending any money
at all, though going from two books to one. Guess I'll get another Lombard
or Pismo in a few months to get back p to parity, though the Kanga isn't bad
for now in the backup role.

One issue might be that the SMC wireless router may not pass Appletalk
through the wireless side. I don't remember if the 4/600 could use IP
printing, but that might be your option. I set up my 16/600 to use IP
printing because I have a DLink wireless that won't pass AT over the
wireless side.
As far as connecting the two routers, I have a similar setup - DSL to
Linksys wired and then to DLink wireless. I run one of the Linksys out ports
into one of the DLink out ports, and then it just bridges the wired side.
You have to turn off the DHCP function of the wireless first. Only one of
the routers can be passing out addresses.

Re: AirPort in TiBook ???

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew F.
In 8.6 was actually easier to just install the Orinoco driver than to try
and get AirPort installed, for me at least.

Works like a champ either way, with far better reception than any other wifi
card, built in or PCMCIA that I've ever used, including two 12 PowerBook
G4s, a Pismo with original AirPort card, a Lombard with an 802.11g Belkin
card and a PC using a 3Com PC card.

At the opposite side of the house from my AE base station where the 12 G4
is alternating between one and two bars, the Orinoco utility shows a very
strong signal. Across the street where the 12 G4 is constantly acquiring
and dropping the signal, the Lucent card in the Kanga still shows about half
strength and never cuts out.

To make things better, supposedly you can attach an external antenna to the
little plug on the antenna portion of the card (the plastic part that sticks
out of the machine). If that's so, I would imagine reception could be
significantly boosted over the already excellent range.

Andrew

Not if you have to find the drivers, download them and then install

Actually, I tried the Orinoco drivers and didn't like them nearly as

should be better than most internal cards because of the built-in
antenna being on the outside of the PB.

To make things better, supposedly you can attach an external antenna to the
little plug on the antenna portion of the card (the plastic part that sticks
out of the machine). If that's so, I would imagine reception could be
significantly boosted over the already excellent range.

Yes, you can attach an external antenna to the end of the card. An
external antenna would help considerably.

Thing is, with an inverter I could take along the iPod and charge it and

If, however, you are telling me that theses things are unsafe, then I

Re: Power Inverters

2005-02-03 Thread bobgir2004
I've got one. I liked the fact that it was MUCH less than a car
adapter for my Powerbook and would work with any device not just this
 Powerbook.

As for warnings, I've found out that mine works much better if I turn
it off and unplug it before I turn the car on/off. That just seems
like a good idea as if there was going to be a power surge, that seems
like the time when it would happen.

Yes, it's bulkier, but I just stuffed it under the seat.

 No problems thus far.

Timothy -

Any suggestions on what specs to look for? I saw several today at a
computer store and the wattage capacity varied considerably.

For the record, I have no plans to power anything the size of a TV, only
to charge up my iPod and G3 iBook.

E.g., found this at the Belkins site:

The unit simply plugs into any standard, 12-volt DC vehicle cigarette
lighter socket to convert your vehicle's battery power to 110-volt AC
(common household current). Now you can keep laptop computers, PDAs, and AC
appliances powered and operational wherever you go.

€ Powers portable devices using a 300-Watt power inverter

€ Features 2 AC Outlets

€ Converts DC Power to AC power from a cigarette lighter socket

€ Fits all standard vehicle cigarette lighter sockets

€Works well for laptops, portable printers, TV/VCRs, CD players, video
cameras, camping equipment, and other portable devices

€ Automatic overheat shut-off at 150F

€ Low-battery alarm at 10.6V and automatic shut-off feature at 10.6V

€ Overload protection

€ Replaceable fuse included

€ Power LED indicator

€ 1-Year Warranty

Re: Power Inverters

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Note that most of these will put out 110V, not 120V. For PowerBooks,
that's not generally a problem as the PowerBook AC adapter is
tolerant of 110V to 130V (or so). My portable CD player's AC adapter
is not so tolerant... After an hour or two of being plugged in, the
CD player overheated (I don't know exactly how, but it seems like the
CD player was being fed too much power and the thing got REALLY hot
where the power cord plugs in to the device).

Mine's a Vector brand inverter, but I don't remember the exact
wattage. More than 75W, I think.

All things being equal, I'd go for a dedicated DC auto/air adapter
instead of a DC-AC inverter - AC adapter. Given the prices of some
of the PowerBook auto/air adapters, though, things are hardly ever
equal...

Peace,
Drew

Re: Power Inverters

2005-02-03 Thread Stanton Mitrany

I've been using DCAC inverters for about 15 years, for a wide variety of
applications. They've come down quite a bit in price: I have one which
originally cost over $20,000! Being able to purchase a creditable unit for
less than $20. today, although they don't put out much wattage is amazing to
me.

For my money, and from my experience, they're one of the most useful
electronic inventions ever. And, as Bobgir suggested, they're
multifunctional. Many have more than one receptacle built in.

One of the things to look for when you buy is to find a unit with a
modified sine wave output, and which seems to have few restrictions on its
recommended uses, given its wattage output.

Most also will put out up to two to three times their rated wattage for
short periods of time. Good units can dish out twice their rated wattage for
maybe five to fifteen minutes, and three times their rated wattage for
perhaps a few seconds, without tripping their circuit breakers.

Good units also will shut themselves off when the battery they're drawing
power from falls below a pre-determined voltage. Some of these products
allow you to custom-set the minimum voltage left in the battery before the
unit shuts down to protect the battery. This dramatically reduces the chance
that you'll leave your battery with too little juice to re-start your
vehicle if you've been using your inverter with the engine off.

Incidentally, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can often be used as a
combination battery and inverter (that's what it is, after all!) for a
limited period of time, and can even be used for such functions as running
power tools in the wild, should you ever need to do that, or if you have
other portable needs for AC 120 volt (or even 240 volt AC with units with
that voltage option) when there's no easy access to ordinary AC current, the
type we have in our homes.

Seems an economical way to keep your iBook, iPod, and other devices
 powered on long road trips.

For the same price, its much safer to get an auto adapter for your laptop.

Replacing RAM: PC100 vs PC133

2005-02-03 Thread John P. Roberts
I have a PB G4 400 MHz (Titanium Mercury) and want to upgrade my RAM.
I currently have one 256 and one 128 Mb SIMM for a total of 384 Mb.
Both SIMMs are PC100, whatever that means. I was thinking of
replacing the 128 Mb with a 512, to yield 768 Mb. I have two questions:

Can I just swap the 512 into the 128's (bottom) slot, or does the 512
need to go in the top slot and the old 256 into the bottom?

Can I have one PC133 SIMM and one PC100, or do they both need to be the
same?

Re: Power Inverters

2005-02-03 Thread kochkodin
I got a 300 watt inverter from WalMart several years ago...paid $40 for
it and never had a problem...It will put out up to a total of 150 watts
from each ac outlet...Has a built in fan and a low voltage thingy that
shuts it off if the car battery is too low...I have run my iMac SE 400
and an Epson 740 printer off of it going down the highway in a
van...Works great...Just got a 500 watt unit at WalMart after Christmas
for $40 but haven't used it yet...The safest way to use one of these
units is to start the car then plug in the inverter...plug in the ac
plugs...turn on the inverter then turn on the appliances you are using
one at a time...waiting a few seconds in between so the power draw is
stabilized and then you are off and running...Shut down is the same...1
appliance at a time then the inverter itself...Took the 300 cross
country...powered a 12 color tv and also the computer/printer combo
w/out any problem..
HTH..

that somewhere in the last two years that Apple may have switched
suppliers
or just improved on the design, as the keys are both quieter and a
little
crisper in feel, VERY NICE.

What
a deal!

Re: New 12 PB

2005-02-03 Thread Andrew F.
I've lived with the 12 for over a year, and a number of other 1024X768
laptops before that (not to mention the older 800X600 and even 640X400
models), so I guess I'm used to the amount of real estate I have.

I was seriously thinking about moving up to the 15 this time, but the small
size and light weight won out again when I saw them side-by-side.

If there was a way to actually get a smaller pixel size( so you can
have higher than 1024x768 on the 12 inch, id buy another one as my
upgrade, but I always run out or desktop space.. so its looking like a
15 for me... (The lighted keyboard is a thing I like, but not enough to
pay for it, course, now I dont have to since its standard in the 15:-))

there about an hour before I did.

As I am all finished with school, I thought that perhaps the 15

 just just
so much sexier, and well, I couldn't resist.

There are small differences though. The new scrolling trackpad is
 very
nice, and only took me about a minute to get used to (no more

 possible.

Re: Printing and Wireless Connectivity

I don't remember if the 4/600 could use IP
printing, but that might be your option.
The LaserWriter 4/600 PS is LocalTalk only, so far as I am aware. I
have a 4/600 PS running on a wired network at my parents place using
LocalTalk Bridge. We have a 7200/90 on the network which is around for
the sole purpose of running LocalTalk Bridge 24/7. This setup works
flawlessly. Of course, this is under 8.6 to 9.2.2, and it is wired. I
am not sure if it would play nice with OS X. I don't see why it would
not, though. The router on the network there is a LinkSys, and
AppleTalk is officially not a supported protocol.

I am running a Netgear on the network here, and it seems to play nice
with AppleTalk to the NeXT Laser Printer. Again, wired network and my
machine is running 9.2.2. The NeXTstation is running OPENSTEP and
Columbia AppleTalk Protocol (CAPer by Frank Siegert). In effect, the
NeXT spools print jobs from the Mac, and digests them for the printer,
which hasn't got any brains.

Since your problem is that WiFi doesn't like the AppleTalk, IP printing
does seem like the logical solution. But, you can't give the 4/600 an
IP address. Just a thought but, what if you were to try specifying the
IP address of the host which the printer is physically plugged into
(herein called hostof4/600PS) as the address for IP printing? If you
run LocalTalk Bridge on hostof4/600PS, which I assume you are doing, I
would think that it might work. The reason I think this is that with
LocalTalk Bridge, you are printing to a printer that does not physically
exist on the ethernet network anyhow. As long as the print request gets
to hostof4/600PS, IMO LocalTalk Bridge should look after the rest. At
least, that would seem logical ... which means it probably won't work.

Best of luck:-)

I have a PB G4 400 MHz (Titanium Mercury) and want to upgrade my RAM.
I currently have one 256 and one 128 Mb SIMM for a total of 384 Mb.
Both SIMMs are PC100, whatever that means. I was thinking of
replacing the 128 Mb with a 512, to yield 768 Mb. I have two questions:

Can I just swap the 512 into the 128's (bottom) slot, or does the 512
need to go in the top slot and the old 256 into the bottom?

Can I have one PC133 SIMM and one PC100, or do they both need to be the
 same?

If both the 512 and the 128 are physically the same, then I believe you can
swap them. I'm just not sure that the Titanium uses low profile SODIMMs. I
believe that you can mix PC133 and PC100 together. That number refers to the
memory speed, the larger the number, the faster the memory chip works.
However, when you put a faster chip into a computer with a slower memory
bus, then the memory downgrades its speed to match the computer speed.

Warning! A power inverter is easily misused. Forget to
unplug and you may have to buy a new battery. Plugging
in before starting or forgetting to unplug before
turning off your engine may cause damage.
Devices such as heavy-start draw motors, etc. should
not be used. In other words be very aware of the Power
demand of what you plug in.
Sorry if this is too obvious to most of you. But I
have sinned in ignorance.
As far as unplugging that sort of depends on how your car is wired.
One of our cars turns off the power outlets with the key. Another
turns off one with the key, the other is on continuously. That's the
one you have to be careful about.

IIRC all three inverters I have have a low voltage alarm. I had it
trigger once when I was charging up some gear. I immediately turned
the key to start up and the starter had to crank a little longer than
usual. It worried me a touch as I wasn't exactly by the side of the
road at the time.

AM radios don't work well on them because the electrical noise is
easily picked up by the radio. TVs can be a problem, depending on
what type of power supply they have. An older power supply will pass
the electrical noise through to the picture. It doesn't hurt
anything but it makes for a bad picture.

These devices are designed to be used by just about anybody so they
are pretty tolerant. They have overload protection of the inverter,
both an electronic kind that protects the inverter and a good old
fashioned fuse to protect the wiring. One problem is if the inverter
draws too much power from the car outlet and blows the fuse on the
car. It won't hurt anything but it can possibly leave you high and
dry.

I have used the inverter with my laptop during start and shut off
without damage. There really isn't much likely to cause damage with
start up or shutoff. The power dipping during startup may cause the
power to cut out but when powering a laptop it's not a big deal.

hard to burn out power supplies with any significant power output,
they are well protected against most scenarios. This includes
current, temperature, low input voltage, VI switching (there's a
