I've operated a fairly large, and used-to-be extremely busy, mailing
list since the mid 90s. Years and years ago I wrote a Perl script I
called Mommy. Mommy processes the email sent to the list before the
list software (Majordomo first, now Mailman) sees it. Mommy rejects
email that contains the list signature or a fragment thereof, uses
an unmodified digest subject, has an excessive quoted-to-original
text ratio (detecting repetitive filler as well), has unbroken
all-on-one-line paragraphs, et cetera. It is inflexible, unforgiving,
and provides instant negative feedback to the non-compliant. Lots
of people have hated Mommy over the years. I think more though have
appreciated it.

We have the rules in place to make the messages easier for everybody
to read and enjoy, particularly those who have to use text readers.

It's amazing how many people hate having some simple rules in place,
intended to make life easier for ALL subscribers (including those
using an ADM3A and /usr/bin/mail), because said rules require them
to actually expend more effort than merely click Reply, type their
thoughts, and click Send.

I truly feel for you Amber.

a SCSI connection before I sell off the trusty Lombard and the best

under OS9.

So I want to install Classic on the Pismo.
The Pismo has a 40 Gb hard drive with 19 Gb used.
Get Info identifies it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Can I just install OS9 or do I need to partition the disk first?
If I need to partition can I copy the Tiger installation to my
external Firewire disk, partition the Pismo drive and copy the
Tiger installation back?

Is there a better way?

Thanks

technology is the answer, what was the question?

Andrew, you do not need to partition the disk. Just go ahead and
install OS 9.

I also recently bought an older PB1.67, backlit keys are cool, but
it's got to be pretty dark for them to light up, and they don't stay
on for long. I'd really like to know if there's any way to set its

Hello all and thanks in advance for any tips/advice.
As a project in my retirement, I'm going to resuscitate
 my original iBook.

Can any old 2.5 mm drive do?
 ATA or IDE?
Is one brand better than another?
How much of an issue is disc speed?

 Terry McCune

1. I bought 2 new batteries from ebay for my sons' iBooks
for about $75 each, shipping included, and they are holing
around 3-4 hours. I'll dig up the info if you are
interested (my post on this may be in the archive from last
summer). Their regular price on their web site is $99!

2. While you are at it, max the RAM. You'll be glad you
did. :-)

3. Drive speed makes almost as much difference on older G3s
as it does on newer models. If you can afford a 5400 or
higher speed drive, I'd say do it.

4. New drives should be 9.5mm or less in height. Otherwise
any ATA laptop drive should do (but see the drive caveat
over at Other World Computing - I don't recall if their
note includes the clamshell or not).

5. FWIW, you can put some CD-RW drives in a clamshell,
although you'll need to modify the bezel if you want it to
look stock and have the eject button work (not really an
issue if you are running OS X). Otherwise, the stock PC
bezel will fit or can be made to fit with a little
trimming. Just a thought. There's good info at Accelerate
Your Mac (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com) on compatable drives
(hard drives, too!).

6. Getting the top cover back in place, for me, was the
most difficult part (the only difficult part, really). I
think there's still a small gap on the top left on my one
son's iBook. It's tedious, but be patient. It should go
fine.

7. As to drive brand, I've heard praises and gripes about
every brand. I think IBM/Hitachi and Toshiba are the main
laptop drive brands right now.

Good luck.

Bob Eye

All of that takes several actions and time. I am active on many
lists, and if bottom posting is preferred, it would be simpler if
there were a way to make that the default.

Well, under Options in Outlook Express 5.06 there is a radio button where
you can select whether your reply will be typed in front or after the quoted
text.

This oughta be possilbe in every decent mail program, oughtn't it?

(questionable) - I should have either Airport or the Orinoco drivers
installed, correct? That's how I interpreted the instructions from Orinoco.
If using Orinoco drivers delete all other card drivers. Does this sound

Top-Bottom Posting Clarification

2006-02-03 Thread Laurent Daudelin
We just got words from Dan, the List Mom, about the top-bottom posting issue
and here is what he said:

The rule applies regardless of the default behavior of any given email
client. We established the rule for four reasons:

1. It's logical. It shows the flow from message to response.

2. It makes it possible to read a reply without having to skip past the
new text to read the quoted material it's responding to. If the thread
hasn't been active for a day or two - or you've been away from email
over the weekend - this is very helpful.

3. Bottom posting forces people to see how much they're quoting and
should act as a visual reminder not to quote everything.

4. Finally, it's nice to have consistency.

This is all about best practices, not default email software behavior.

Dan

So, folks, better get used to it. I am not happy to have to remind people
but we've been asked to so I'm just carrying on.

Let's not turn this into a debate as to whether top or bottom posting is
best, OK?

Now resuming our G-Books regular content...

-Laurent.

I read this AM that AOL will start charging mailing list owners for

will not be delivered. Other big mail services (yahoo etc) should
follow.

mailing list is a little vague but it mentions specifically

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3581301

AOL announced on January 30 that it will phase out its Enhanced
Whitelist service in June in favour of Goodmail CertifiedEmail, which
carries an as yet unspecified per-message fee. Until now, a mailing
list gets on the AOL whitelist by following good e-mail practices,
such as cleaning up dead addresses, making it easy for people to
leave mailing lists, and of course not sending any spam. This is all
going to be thrown out the window and replaced with the payment of
hard currency to Goodmail. People who can afford to pay this fee will
have the privilege of reaching AOL subscribers, others will end up in
junk folders. Yahoo is expected to follow down the same path.

2006-02-03 Thread Woody Duncan

I use a G-4 powerbook, OS 10.4. I recently got an ipod
to hold photos (triplet grandkids) and some music.
I'm confused on uploading new music without losing
the old tunes on the ipod. When I add new stuff to my
itunes and then want to put them on my ipod, do I have
to upload everything (takes forever) or can I just
add some additional music ?

I've been a list nanny since we started having nannies, and on one of the
oldest lists, the quadlist.

The lists are not a democracy. There is no voting. If you don't like
following rules meant for the good of all, unsubscribe. It's not a
dictatorship either.

That said, there have always been people who top-posted. It's a pain.

Courtesy to aid effective communication is the object here. Just as we
DON'T POST IN ALL CAPS we have a number of other conventions to extend
courtesy as we wish it extended to us.

The top posting rules is a lot older than a year. (snip) ing long quotes
to the minimum is another courtesy.

But, Tim has put his finger on it.

If we don't use the rules effectively, people will not read our thoughts.
The delete key is a lot easier than scrolling through a lot of repetative
junk.

I'd suggest a look-see at the list rules

or I'll be glad to send them to you by e-mail.

Hello Woody,

First - congrats on your triplet grandkids !!
Second - regarding the iPod - whenever you plug your iPod into your
Powerbook, it will be automatically updated to include any songs or
playlists you have added to your iTunes library since your last
update. Remember that the iPod has a hard drive so, like your
Powerbook, you just add to the items already on there each time you
update as opposed to completely overwriting them.

I hope this helps,

Amber

PS. It is a good idea to back up your iTunes library on a disk or
external hard drive from time to time.

Get over yourselves. If you don't like them, either *respectfully*
challenge them or move on. It's simple. As far as *these* rules go, they
seem simple, straight forward, and have stood the (relatively short) test
of time. It's unfortunate that current developers neglect these
conventions, but please don't make the list-nannies pay for that.

I, for one, have had *one* serious problem with a nanny when they
introduced a 'rule' about the use of sarcasm (it was *forbidden*), but
felt quite at ease to cast similarly disparaging comments upon members of

Without using a third party app, iTunes 'synchronizes' your iPod with your
iTunes Library. If you have music on your iPod that no longer exists in
your Library, you'll lose that music. If only a few changes (ie.
additions) have been made to the Library, the synch process should move
along pretty quickly.

This was implemented, IIRC, in the attempt to prevent you from easily
downloading tunes from your friend's computers directly to the iPod, and
to ease resistance to the introduction of the iPod from the RIAA front.

A check at Versiontracker.com for 'iPod' should give you an idea of some
of the utilities available.

Re: Wi-fi card

2006-02-03 Thread Kenneth Vann
I just tried it in a PB 3500 Kanga (OS9.1) and
I've got lights there so I guess it does work. I just can't figure out how
to get it to show up on the 2400 in OS 9.

Hello All.

I have been following this thread for a couple of days, and I am of the
opinion that you have not installed all of the Airport software, or some
thing that your installed is bad.

First off, go to this great site and read how to do a manual install of
Airport v1.3.1. Only v1.3.1 will work on the 2400.

http://www.alksoft.com/projects/unsupported_airport.html

Second, with the software installed, you should have an AirPort selection
in both the AppleTalk control panel, and the TCP/IP control panel. If you
don't, then something is wrong. Even if you have AppleTalk turned off, set
the control panel to the AirPort Card.

If your install is successful, then when the card is in, it should pop up
on desktop as AirPort PC Card.

Make sure that any network you are trying to connect to has encryption
turned off. Only use the encryption once you have the hardware working.

If at all possible, install a new OS on the laptop with the clean install
option. I have seen many problems solved by starting over with a clean
install.

One other item, I have had some PowerBooks just refuse to work with
wireless. The solution for them is the Farallon or Proxim version of the
Skyline card for Macintosh. I have never had a PowerBook that this software
would not work with. The only down side is that the card only supports
64bit WEP.

If you do get it working, please let me know what the final solution is.

I hope this info helps.

If you can modify your signature, you can also add 2 '-' characters at the
beginning of a line, just above your name and signature. Many email clients
and news readers will honor this when automatically quoting by omitting
everything that follows those 2 '-' characters on a single line, which will
make the life of others easier since they won't have to delete the extra
text when they reply to one of your messages.

Re: Rules

2006-02-03 Thread phoenix
Quoth Tim Collier :

Fine, I give in! I'll 'attempt' to bottom post out of courtesy
to the rest of you. I don't like it, but I like this list.

I think that's about all anyone's asked, really.

I do not plan to unsubscribe.

Well, that's good. No, seriously, I mean that's /good/. No sarcasm
there, capice?

And you all of you who like 'sniping' at me...please stop! As
Amber said, there is a REAL PERSON at the other end of this email
 address.

If you interpret good-natured ribbing (my AOL comment) as a snipe,
I'd suggest group therapy.

Sorry if I express an unpopular opinion from time to time.

There's nothing wrong at all with that, in and of itself. Unpopular
thoughts often lead to great progress. You know, the whole think different
idea... [grins]

I'm not one to keep quiet when something bothers me.

This much is abundantly clear, Mr. Collier.

I don't plan to change but WILL adapt (as I've obviously done here).
This is my last post regarding top vs. bottom posting. I will conform.

Amen, hallelujah, and hell yeah.

 Exterminate all rational though.

Either I don't get it, or Ah, I believe that's it!

Cheers,
A.J.

Re: [OT] The old days

2006-02-03 Thread Dyna

Amen!

I'm retired at age 55 with no debt because for the last
couple decades I've bought what I need instead of what I want. I buy
a new compact car every 10 years, live in a house I inherited and
rehabbed, and buy the cheapest new Mac every 5 years or so. My one
disappointment with Apple was when I gave in and laid out $2200 for a
Pismo that didn't even make it 5 years. My $800 iMac amd $500 Mac
Mini are doing just fine though.

Meanwhile, my friend has been doing her part to juice the
economy- she and her partner buy a new $25,000 minivan every 3 years,
move every 10 years, and will probably never be solvent enough to
retire. I finally talked her into a Mac to replace the $2000+ PC she
bought 5 years ago. A $500 Mac Mini would have met her e-mail and web
surfing needs just fine but instead she pulled out her plastic
and blew nearly $2000 on a loaded iMac with the unproven Intel
processor. She justified this overkill by saying she needs the
capacity to do video, but she doesn't even own a digital camera
so she'll blow another thousand on that.

Propping up the economy is not my responsibility...

Dyna

And whether it be Mac or Intel, Micro$soft or Motorola, it keeps the
economy going. The idea is to buy, buy, buy. This iBook is the 2nd
new Mac I've ever had-the first was a Classic: six or so others were
all 2nd or 3rd hand. I won't tell you how I got most software
because it will start more arguments about Respect For The Law. I'm
a crappy consumer, not putting my shoulder to the wheel any more
than necessary. That's why I like low-end Mac - there are more
than enough sites and posts about high-end Mac.

Re: Wegener Media

2006-02-03 Thread Gene Osburn

And, as far as relevant questions: What can anyone tell me about
Wegener

Media and the service they provide?

They're a small shop in the Carolinas with remarkably offhand business
practices. You probably won't get ripped off when dealing with them,
but it could take a while to complete a transaction. I paid for a WS
battery charger from them and didn't find out until ten days later
(after I emailed them to ask for a status update) that they didn't have
any in stock! They promptly issued a refund, but still

Re: setting bottom post not required in Mail

2006-02-03 Thread Geoffrey Peters

Stardate 060203.11:05 -0500. A subspace message from Andrew in Ann Arbor reads:

I'm using Mail in Panther ... The cursor does end up above the quote ...

It does WHAT?!? Have the Mail devteam been spending too much time
stuck inside Outcroak or something? Methinks we should all write to
the Mail Devteam c/- One Infinite Loop and say RFC 1855, guys!!

See, I wouldn't've known this, as I don't use Mail -- I've been a
dedicated Eudora fan *waves to Steve* since version 0.8. I've tried
other mail programs over the years, I keep coming back to the Big E.
When I moved to OSX five months ago, I tried Apple's Mail ... threw
it my Eudora mail-folder and I got a kernel panic.

I run my own RFC 1855 pre-filter here (based on 'listar') - if
incoming mail breaks RFC 1855, the sender gets a nice little bounce
message asking them to try again. I used to use a similiar pre-filter
for my nntp feed (but without the bounce) when I still bothered with
newsgroups, My .sig states my filter rules thusly:

WARNING: Mail to this address wil be auto-bounced without warning if:
(a) more than 10% original content appears before first quoted matter,
(b) quoted material exceeds 75% of total message content, and/or
(c) HTML is used to format text and/or embed non-ASCII items.

Re: Top-Bottom Posting Clarification

2006-02-03 Thread Geoffrey Peters

Stardate 060203.11:52 -0500. A subspace message from Laurent Daudelin reads:

1. It's logical. It shows the flow from message to response.

Historical note: RFC 1855 (which is what these rules are based on)
grew out of the inherent patchiness in UseNet NNTP propagation --
no-one could guarantee that all messages within a particular thread
would reach all servers and all recipients, so the practice of
quoting started. This way, if a thread message went AWOL (as they
often did, and still do) subsequent messages would still contain
relevant content, thus most thread followers would not miss out on
stuff.
